DMG Newsletter for October 10th, 2025

In your school propaganda
They starve in their splendor
You've asked for our comment, I simply will render
My country 'tis of thy people you're dying

Now that the longhouses breed superstition
You force us to send our toddlers away
To your schools where they're taught to despise their traditions
Forbid them their languages
Then further say that American history really began
When Columbus set sail out of Europe and stress
That the nation of leeches that's conquered this land
Are the biggest and bravest and boldest, and best
And yet where in your history books is the tale
Of the genocide basic to this country's birth?
Of the preachers who lied?
How the Bill of Rights failed?
How a nation of patriots returned to their earth?
And where will it tell of the Liberty Bell
As it rang with a thud over Kinzua mud?
And of brave Uncle Sam in Alaska this year?
My country 'tis of thy people you're dying

Hear how the bargain was made for the West
With her shivering children in zero degrees
Blankets for your land, so the treaties attest
Oh well, blankets for land, is a bargain indeed
And the blankets were those Uncle Sam had collected
From smallpox diseased dying soldiers that day
And the tribes were wiped out
And the history books censored
A hundred years of your statesmen have felt it's better this way
Yet a few of the conquered have somehow survived
Their blood runs the redder
Though genes have been paled
From the Grand Canyon's caverns
To Craven's sad hills
The wounded, the losers, the robbed sing their tale
From Los Angeles County to upstate New York
The white nation fattens while others grow lean
Oh, the tricked and evicted they know what I mean
My country 'tis of thy people you're dying

The past it just crumbled, the future just threatens
Our lifeblood shut up in your chemical tanks
And now here you come, bill of sale in your hand
And surprise in your eyes, that we're lacking in thanks
For the blessings of civilization you've brought us
The lessons you've taught us
The ruin you've wrought us
Oh, see what our trust in America's bought us?
My country 'tis of thy people you're dying

Now that the pride of the sires receives charity
Now that we're harmless and safe behind laws
Now that my life's to be known as your heritage
Now that even the graves have been robbed
Now that our own chosen way is a novelty
Hands on our hearts
We salute you your victory
Choke on your blue, white and scarlet hypocrisy
Pitying the blindness that you never see
That the eagles of war whose wings lent you glory
They were never no more than carrion crows
Pushed the wrens from their nest
Stole their eggs, changed their story
The mockingbird sings it
It's all that she knows
"Oh, what can I do?", say a powerless few
With a lump in your throat and a tear in your eye
Can't you see that their poverty's profiting you?
My country 'tis of thy people you're dying

America has always been a nation of immigrants. Our diversity is also our strength. Except for a handful of surviving Native Americans, our ancestors all came from somewhere else on this planet, escaping one culture/country for the promise of "freedom" here. This history of Native Americans in the US, as well as in Canada is a long, sad story. Read about the "Trail of Tears" and you will see what I mean. The above song was written and performed by Buffy Sainte-Marie, a dynamic folk/protest singer whose career stretched from 1964 until more than a half century later. This song does a fine job of capturing the way we have mistreated Native Americans ever since we came to these shores several hundred years ago. Ms. Sainte-Marie claimed she was a Cree Native and born in Saskatchewan but this turned out to be only partially true. She was reborn and adopted by the Natives she claimed to be a part of. Her songs, her singing, words and music reflect her sincere inner spirit which is immune to the borders and barriers of certain custodians. I got a "Best of Buffy Sainte-Marie" CD a few years back and I have been listening to it, as well as a few of her early records, over and over. To me, she is the Real Thing, someone who speaks Truth to the Powers that be. She even made a great record called 'Illuminations' in 1969, utilizing electronic sounds way before many bands and composers were using electronics in their music or compositions. I don't care what some critics/journalists say about her alleged fictional history, her music and lyrics are powerful, honest, uplifting and inspiring to those who want to listen and hear what she is saying. A big toast to Buffy Sainte-Marie and her large body of work.

Please remember this: Immigrants are not our enemies, we are all immigrants and this diversity is our True Strength. If you want to be truly Free, you must fight for it because it is quickly being taken away from us piece by piece, day by day. Please read the history of World War II since there are way too many similarities going on now to what happened nearly a century ago. You don't want that Tidal Wave of Hate to take over again, our lives, our Freedom and our futures are at stake. Take a stand or we will turn to dust before our time is up. - Bruce Lee Gallanter at Downtown Music Gallery

TWO NEW GEMS FROM OUR FRIENDS AT RELATIVE PITCH:

CAMILA NEBBIA / KIT DOWNES / ANDREW LISLE - Exhaust (Relative Pitch RPR 1225; USA) Featuring Camila Nebbia on tenor sax, Kit Downes on piano and Andrew Lisle on drums. Recorded in Berlin in 2023. I've been a big fan of Argentinian born, Berlin based saxist Camila Nebbia for the past few years and have always dug her half dozen or so in-store sets  here at DMG. Ms. Nebbia played here at DMG a few weeks ago (9/30/25) with Chuck Roth and Ryan Sawyer for a great Relative Pitch night. British keyboard wiz, Kit Downes, can be heard on more than two dozen releases since 2008 with an assorted cast of international players: Troyka, Clark Tracey, Norma Winstone and a fine trio with Bill Frisell & Andrew Cyrille. I've heard British-based drummer Andrew Lisle working with Alex Ward, John Edwards and Colin Webster.
Things begin quietly on the opening piece, "Differential Spider", tentatively at first and then building and expanding. Ms. Nebbia has a strong, dark, probing tone on her tenor sax with the piano and drums matching her solemn yet feisty power. Although sounding free, this music has a more solemn, thoughtful undertow, not really Fire Music but something easier to deal with. The piano and drums work well together moving in tight, connected lines, a great match for Ms. Nebbia's inspired, organic playing. On "Dissipate", the sax and piano join together and spin their lines in tight circles, the effect is inspiring , helping us to ascend together. "Enervated" begins with soft, eerie trills and continues to sound like a few ghosts hovering together. "Ten of Wands" is also restrained at first and builds quickly into some tight, yet free waves. Although the final piece is called "Deadblow Hammer", it is again a more restrained, thoughtful, way of playing freely without any screaming going on. The trio plays together here as one organic force moving tightly together. Some listeners think that all "free/jazz" is intense, Fire Music, yet this is not always the case. "Free Music" comes in many different forms and styles, the best of which celebrates freedom with connected team spirit and this is what we have here. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

SIGNE EMMELUTH / INGEBRIGT HAKER FLATEN / AXEL FILIP - Hyperboreal Trio (Relative Pitch RPR 1231; USA) Featuring Signe Emmeluth on alto sax, Ingbrigt Haker Flaten on contrabass and Axel Filip on drums. There seems to be a wealth of women saxists over the past decade or so from around the world: Lotte Anker, Ingrid Laubrock, Camila Nebbia, Zoh Amba, Angelica Niescer, Anna Webber and Silke Eberhard. All great musicians with their own distinct sound/approach. You can add Danish saxist (currently living in Norway) Signe Emmeluth to that list, her first recording that I heard was a fine duo effort with drummer Kresten Osgood. You no doubt know about Norwegian bassist Ingebrigt Haker Flaten, who has been a member of The Thing, Atomic, Angles 3 and the Scorch Trio. Argentine drummer Axel Filip (currently living in Berlin) is someone I know little about aside from working with Camila Nebbia. This session was recorded at a studio in Trondheim, Norway in May of 2023. The trio begins with "Stone Cold", playing freely with Ms. Emmeluth's chattering sax up front as the rest of the trio erupt tightly around her. On "Ahugentado", the trio starts out laying back a bit before the sputtering and tight interplay increases. Bassist Haker Flaten is at the center of a simmering storm here which works well as one united sound/force. Ms. Emmeluth has a distinctive, warm tone which she unleashes with a compelling sense of restraint. On "Come Closer", the trio concentrate on more careful, close mic'd sounds, breathy, clicks and taps. "Wood" also shows much restraint with the bass centering things as the sax and percussion spin around one another. The fluttering lines speed up as the trio ascends spirit-wise. On the last piece, "Capiango", the playing is more laid back, more cerebral. somber yet still eerie. It is a good thing to hear some free/improv music which is also mellow, thoughtful yet still quietly adventurous. A strong, inspired and not too intense example of freedom done right. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

TOADAL PACKAGE with COSMO GALLARO / BRENNA REY / JAMES PAUL NADIEN - Toadal Package (JPN Records 003; USA) Featuring Cosmo Gallaro on electric guitar, Brenna Rey on electric bass and James Paul Nadien on drums & percussion. The last time we heard from free/power trio Toadal Package was in the summer of 2023, two years ago. Since then, drummer JP Nadien, left his post here at DMG and joined the current version of the Flying Luttenbachers, Weasel Walter's legendary outfit who has been around since the early 1990's. I've caught Toadal Package several times over the years and also see/heard both Nadien and Rey playing in a variety of improv situations. The previous Toadal Package release included guest saxist Dave Tamura who has since passed away.
The three members of Toadal Package met at public school while growing up in Long Island and they are longtime friends and musical collaborators. They remind me at times another trio named Dissipated Face who also met at public school during the early 1980's in Merrick, Long Island and are/were also diverse and ambitious. This disc opens with "Yes, You Are Alive" which has a powerful, punk/noise/metal-ish sound, tight, pounding and brutal! Guitarist Gallaro has an intense, thick, distortion, howling tone. Bassist Rey provides a central throbbing sound on their bass. What's interesting is that the music here sounds composed, very tight and well executed. During the mid-1980's, there was a series of bands with powerful, tight instrumental prowess and this is what we find here. "@1st Century Transsexual E-Girl" goes through a series of quick changing sections, impressive to hear and no doubt difficult to play. Gallaro takes a number of ferocious hairpin turn solo here, one after the other with little room to breathe. The bass and drums speed up on "Premature Supernova" while Mr. Gallaro takes an astonishing jazz-like guitar solo. You can tell that Rey and Nadien have been playing together for many years since they are so locked in as one tight, powerful, complex layer of lines keeps shifting together. This music is often most harrowing, it sounds like it is on the verge of imploding. What's interesting is that Toadal Package have taken the instrumental process of jazz/rock/fusion added another aspect of punk/metal brutality and increased flame of Fire Music, burning higher and more intense that you would imagine. Yowsah, dig in! - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

FROSTLAKE with JAN TODD / TERRY TODD / ANDY PEAKE - Shattered Stone (Discus Music 200CD; UK) Frostlake features Ms. Jan Todd on vocal, guitars, cello, el harp, kalimba, psaltery, waterphones, guzheng, theremin, Korg & Noisebox percussion, samples & filed recordings, Terry Todd on electric-acoustic 12 string and bass guitars and Andy Peake on piano & organ. This is the fourth disc from Frostlake, currently a trio led by Jan Todd with help from Terry Todd and Andy Peake. Both Jan and Terry Todd are also members of another Discus group called the Orchestra of the Upper Atmosphere. Both Terry Todd and Andy Peake were once members of the eighties new waver band Comsat Angels.
This disc begins with "The Breath", a solemn, sort-of sad, haunting ballad featuring Ms. Todd's hushed, dreamy vocals. Rather nice. "Now and Then" is also hushed, haunting and laid back with lovely, sad vocals by Ms. Todd. This music reminds me a an LA band called Downy Mildew from the late 1980's/early 1990's, a similar wistful spirit. Although it is Ms. Todd's soft, sad voice that is the center of these songs, it is the way she uses subtle, mysterious, dream-like samples that makes this more hypnotic and enticing. The songs seem to come from a dream-like landscape, rather mystical and exquisite. Ms. Todd appears to have a lovely voice which she softens in a haze. If I were the producer, I would've turned down the haze a bit to let her voice shine through more. Either way, I found this disc to be most enchanting, a welcome reprise from the noisier, freer weirdness that I usually review here. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

NOT ONE NOT TWO with GEOFF BRIGHT / HERVE PEREZ - openings and samadhis (Discus Music 204CD; UK) Not One Not Two is Geoff Bright on bass & soprano saxes & voice and Herve Perez on alto & soprano saxes. Although I hadn't heard of saxist Geoff Bright before now, I do recognize the name of the other saxist here, Herve Perez from his work with the Ron Caines / Martin Archer Axis (mostly on electronics & field recordings) and Inclusion Principle, both of whom record for this, the Discus Music label. Saxophone duets are still relatively rare although a variety of AACM reeds players have done this from time to time. According to the liner notes here, this music was inspired by Buddhist meditation practices. I was unsure of this idea would inform this music but as I listened, I heard a certain centered calming vibe. Piece 1 features bass and alto saxes, both taking their time to explore similar textural territories slowly, thoughtfully, busy at first and then slowing down to a more contemplative vibe. As this piece unfolds, the two saxes speed up and increase the intensity of their dialogue. Mr. Bright adds some odd yet expressive vocals to his duo with Mr. Perez on soprano sax for the second piece, his voice working well with Perez' sax. Piece 3 is for two soprano saxes and this piece works best as both saxes explore similar textural terrain, exchanging ideas quickly. On the 4th piece (for bass & alto saxes), the duo play slowly, playing around with the same note or range, bending their tones carefully. For piece 6, it sounds as if Mr. Bright is playing a tube, getting those deep notes out on his bass sax while adding some solemn vocal sounds as well at times. The favorite piece here is the last one, "The Samsadi Amidst the ten Waves of Samsara", which has a mysterious, sensuous, mystical vibes, rather prayer-like. It feels good to calm down the vibe into a more somber state, state which is somewhat meditative. Ommmmmmmmm. Amen. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

KREIDLER - Early Recordings 1994-95 (Bureau B 498CD; Germany) While working in Berlin Wedding at Andere Baustelle studio on their upcoming album, Kreidler found also time to dig deep into the vaults of their Düsseldorf and Berlin archives. Thirty years ago, Kreidler's eponymous mini-album was released on Cologne-based label Finlayson; and RIVA, their first outing, on cassette tape, was released a year before that. Both released in limited physical formats and long unavailable. This edition documents the band's beginnings, with threads that can be followed throughout their whole history to their current work. Still, they are straight out of a certain scene, at a certain place, at a certain time. Kreidler -- formed from the encounter of the band Deux Baleines Blanches (Thomas Klein, Andreas Reihse, and Stefan Schneider) with DJ Sport (Detlef Weinrich) -- already in its initial years, and in those that followed, managed to hold seemingly contradictory strands, becoming a fluid form that could equally accommodate the various strengths and interests of its members. This ability has remained intact up to the present lineup of Thomas Klein, Alex Paulick, and Andreas Reihse. Oliver Tepel wrote of their mini-album in 1995 in Spex magazine: "On the basis of calm grooves from andante to moderato -- comparable to the dissolution of object and background in analytical cubism -- the contours of the instruments disappear in favor of mysteriously meandering waves of sound." In 1994, RIVA, the beginning: circuitous somehow, a spatial presence in the restraint, strangely physical in its beauty. Mounting with Das Wilde Heinefeld, with voice and bass clarinet by Fritz Sitterle. Produced for an unreleased Monarchie und Alltag cover version album, conceived by Joerg "Zappo" Zboralski as a follow-up to his Brücke Kaufen album The journey ends in a heated but once again taut textual space, familiar ground for Kreidler, after various gigs with spoken word artists. The photography incorporated on the front cover of this release depicts Kreidler in 1995 in the artists' club WP8.

THE RESIDENTS - Leftovers (1970-1988)(Cryptic Corp NRT025; Earth) First time on CD for all 39 tracks! Compiling 3 RSD LPs, now with eight previously unreleased extra leftovers! Formed in the early 1970s, The Residents have now been charting a unique path through the musical landscape for over half a century now. From far-out, experimental recordings to highly conceptual, innovative multi-platform projects, the band refuses to stand still, and continues to move in several different directions at once. But you already knew that. Combining new RDX mixes produced by The Residents using their original multitrack tapes under lockdown conditions during 2020, and a number of tapes placed by Hardy Fox in a part of the band's storage complex re-discovered in 2023, 'Leftovers' brings together the 'Leftovers Again?!' Record Store Day trilogy, alongside extra leftovers which The Residents couldn't fit onto those vinyl only releases. Featuring alternate versions and lost tracks from The Residents' 'classic' 1970s period, the lost 'Man' album music, Mole Trilogy outtakes, alternate versions of 'God In 3 Persons' material and even evidence of a brief "jazz phase" 'Leftovers' is a treasure trove for fans of this remarkable, chameleonic band at their best pREServed for future generations - this is The Residents as we've always wanted to hear them.

DON ELLIS with JAKI BYARD / PAUL BLEY / TOM SCOTT / JOHN MAGRUDER / RON STARR / RON MYERS / DAVE WELLS / RON CARTER / GARY PEACOCK / AL FRANCIS / CHARLIE PERSIP / et al - The 1960’s Albums (Enlightenment 9248; EEC) Donald Johnson Ellis, born July 25, 1934, was an American jazz trumpeter, drummer, composer, and bandleader. He is best known for his extensive musical experimentation, particularly in the area of time signatures. Later in his life he worked as a film composer, contributing a score to 1971's The French Connection and 1973's The Seven-Ups. This four CD set features eight superb original Don Ellis albums, on which he performed as leader, all compiled on four CDs. Featuring this most experimental jazz musician's most dynamic sounds, the compilation works beautifully as both an introduction to the great man's work, and as a fine reminder of his matchless music. Albums included feature: '...How Time Passes' (1961), 'New Ideas' (1961), 'Essence' (1962), 'Live at Monterey' (1967), 'Live In 3⅔/4 Time' (1967) and more.

LP SECTION:

* AMANDA MONACO with MICHAEL ATTIAS / SEAN CONLY / SATOSHI TAKEISHI - Deathblow (Genevieve Records  GR 30604; USA) Featuring Amanda Monaco on guitar & compositions, Michael Attias on alto & bari saxes, Sean Conly on contrabass and Satoshi Takeishi on drums. I've had my eye & ear on Downtown guitarist Amanda Monaco since she first walked into DMG in the mid-1990's seeking advice on jazz records way back when. Aside from being a fine guitarist and composer, Ms. Monaco has been teaching at Berklee and at NEC in Boston for many years. Although she wasn't born Jewish, she converted when she married publicist/historian Andrey Henkin and wound up exploring different types of klez/Jewish music as well as a humorous band called the Lascivious Biddies. As far as I can tell, this is the second release from her quartet, Deathblow, whose first disc was released in 2009 and whose personnel has remained the same: Michael Attias on reeds, Sean Conly on bass and Satoshi Takeishi on percussion. All members of this quartet are Downtowners with deep resumes under their belts.
On the first Deathblow release, the quartet played mostly standards plus one cover by Jack Bruce. For this release, Ms. Monaco wrote all seven pieces. This LP begins with "Aw Gee, Thanks", a rather quirky song with an inside/outside sort of structure, which I had to listen to several times in a row to figure out how it held together.  Ms. Monaco plays with a subtle wah wah effect on "Submarine Nuke Officer", the groove here is laid back yet also moderately funky with a fine alto solo from Mr. Attias and a unique lumbering rhythmic scheme. "Post-Toenail Theory" opens with an odd, slightly bent bari sax intro, the sax continues to play in circular lines which help guide the way the piece unfolds. "Ya!" is a fine uptempo work with quick, solid interplay between the bari sax, guitar and rhythm team. Side Two starts off with "Four People", a piece where the guitar and bari sax play intricate lines around one another, weaving a series of connected notes which some together for the chorus(es). The last piece is called, "A Nespresso Moment", another piece which unfolds in unexpected ways. Ms.Monaco takes a long guitar solo while the rest of the quartet keeps switching the tempo and themes. Each time I figure out which direction the piece is going in, it changes with free and written segments all taking place in surprising ways. Each time I listen to this LP, I hear another element, strategy or pattern, that I didn't hear on the previous listen. I like that this LP takes some time to figure out since we have to listen closely to see which connections are taking place. Introspection is good for the soul so take some time to listen in and see where this takes you. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

* LP Release concert for Amanda Monaco's new Deathblow LP will take place at Michiko Studios (15 West 39th St. 7th floor) on October 11th at 5pm.

LA MONTE YOUNG / MARIAN ZAZEELA - Dream House 78'17 (Superior Viaduct SV199LP; USA) Restocked. "Originally released in 1974 on Shandar, Dream House 78'17" is the second full-length album by La Monte Young and Marian Zazeela. This first-time US edition reproduces the original gatefold sleeve with beautiful calligraphy by Zazeela and liner notes by Young and French musicologist Daniel Caux. Side one was recorded at a private concert (on the date and time indicated by the title) and features Young and Zazeela's voices against a sine wave drone with Jon Hassell on trumpet and Garrett List on trombone. This work is a section of the longer composition Map of 49's 'Dream the Two Systems of Eleven Sets of Galactic Intervals Ornamental Lightyears Tracery' (begun in 1966 as a sub-section of The Tortoise, His Dreams and Journeys, which was begun in 1964 with Young's group The Theatre of Eternal Music). The piece evolves with the oscillator changing pitch and dictating an ornate pattern over the course of the performance. Side two is an example of one of the sets of frequencies sustained in the Dream House, the composite sound environments conceived by Young and Zazeela. The composer suggests listening while seated -- to experience how the sound interacts with the room and other perceptions of its arrangement -- as well as while walking. As Young states, 'The frequency ratios are monitored continuously as lissajous patterns on the oscilloscopes and, in spite of the great stability of the oscillators, the phase relationships of the sine waves gradually drift which causes their amplitudes to add and subtract algebraically. Not only does the sound become a bit louder and softer, but at very loud levels, one actually begins to have a sensation that parts of the body are somehow locked in sync with the sine waves and slowly drifting with them in space and time.'"

DON CHERRY with CARLA BLEY / CHARLIE HADEN / ED BLACKWELL - Relativity Suite (Klimt MJJ 359CC-LP; France) Limited restock. Klimt presents a reissue of Don Cherry's Relatively Suite, originally released in 1973. Finally, available again on vinyl. Recorded with the Jazz Composer's Orchestra. At this time, Cherry was becoming increasingly interested in Middle Eastern and traditional African and Indian music, having traveled extensively and studied with Indian musician, Vasant Rai. This suite of songs was particularly influenced by the Indian Carnatic singing tradition, as can be heard from the very opening moments of the album. Featuring Carla Bley on piano, Charlie Haden on bass, and Ed Blackwell on drums, as well as an extended horn and string section, Cherry collaborated extensively with the Jazz Composer's Orchestra throughout the early '70s. His Swedish wife, Moki Cherry, plays tambura on "Trans-Love Airways". Clear vinyl.

KAI WINDING / DINO PIANA / ENRICO PIERANUNZI / GIOVANNI TOMMASO / TULLIO DE PISCOPO - Duo 'Bones' (Red Records RR 123143LP; Italy) "Red Records, a prime example of how small, independent labels capitalize on unique opportunities, thrived due to its streamlined structure and emotionally driven decisions. Founded by promoter Alberto Alberti and jazz aficionado Sergio Veschi, the label built its reputation by capturing pivotal moments in Italian jazz and recording international artists like Sam Rivers, whose album The Quest became a classic. Their credibility and passion were key to earning artists' trust. The album Duo 'Bones', recorded on November 17, 1978, is a product of such seizing-the-moment intuition. Trombonists Kai Winding, a Danish-American on tour, and Dino Piana, an accomplished RAI Orchestra member, reunited in Rome after years apart. Their collaboration echoed Winding's earlier work with J.J. Johnson. The rhythm section -- Enrico Pieranunzi on piano, Giovanni Tommaso on bass, and Tullio De Piscopo on drums -- added youthful energy and groove to the session. Recorded at Emmequattro studio, the atmosphere was relaxed and spontaneous, leading to quick, joy-filled takes, mostly first attempts. The album's tracklist blends classics with originals: Winding's 'Duo 'Bones',' 'Lady H,' and 'Stop Following Me'; Piana's 'Kai and Dino'; Pieranunzi's 'Soul Dance.' The result is spirited jazz rich in swing, fast phrasing, and effortless counterpoints, delivering pure musical joy free of political overlays common at the time. Winding's affection for the project was clear. Months later, during a televised concert in Rome with the RAI Orchestra, he proudly mentioned the album and performed a big band arrangement of 'Duo 'Bones'' with Piana on stage -- an enduring nod to their serendipitous session."

SHABASON, GILL, DAVIDSON - Horizon (CvsDLP 014LP; USA) Corbett vs. Dempsey presents Horizon, featuring music by Joseph Shabason and Thom Gill as a score for artist David Hartt's film. This vinyl-only project is co-released with Hartt's new imprint, Actualité. It is the label's maiden voyage and exists in a strictly limited edition of 300 copies. Horizon features soundtrack music composed by Canadian multi-instrumentalist and composer Shabason and Toronto-based musician Gill, also featuring vibraphonist/marimbist Michael Davidson. It includes a breathtaking interpretation of the song "Quiet Life," written by David Sylvian and featured on Japan's 1979 record of the same name. Hartt drew the cover image, of a concrete panel used in the curtain wall of the Chateau Champlain, based on archival materials from the Fonds Roger D'Astous, housed at the Canadian Center for Architecture in Montréal. He commissioned the British comics artist Lando to make speculative drawings of a future city, specifically with Montréal as its starting point, featuring his nephews. In notes from the exhibition at the Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal, where the work was originally shown, curator François LeTourneux writes: "While steering clear of a strictly autobiographical approach, Horizon draws on his personal experience to examine the complex relationship between identity, design, architecture, and urban planning within a specific cultural context and temporal framework. The filmic component of the work explores the daily life of his sister Sue's family, a culturally mixed household like the one in which David and Sue themselves grew up, in Beaconsfield, a suburb of Montréal (of Caribbean descent, they were adopted by English-speaking, Jewish, and white parents). Hartt has described his youth and the socio-cultural context of the time as having been the source of a 'profound sense of alienation,' against which the modernist buildings of the downtown landscape offered a kind of imaginary refuge." Immaculately and painstakingly engineered, mastered, and plated, and pressed on 180-gram vinyl, Horizon plays at 45 rpm, giving the tracks room to breathe and the music space to shine. Impossible to adequately describe, it is as captivating as it is rigorously thought through. A cool, shimmering atmosphere suggesting a utopian soundscape that might be at home in the remade architecture of some near future.

From CHRIS CUTLER:

Formerly of HENRY COW, THE ART BEARS, NEWS FOR BABEL & RECOMMENDED RECORDS (ReR) has been creating an ongoing series of podcasts called the Probes series. I am often fascinated at listening to each of these as Mr. Cutler does an incredible job of showing a deep history of Creative Music in the 20th century & beyond. I usually listen to these on the train to NYC that I take to get to work each day. The most recent Probes (#37) was released earlier this year, here are the links:
