DMG Newsletter for August 15th, 2025

Ooh honey
When you ain't got money
Then you just can't do as you choose
Just gotta live with the hum-drum blues

Each day's just like the day before
Ooh, hum-drum blues
Work like a dog but I'm mighty poor
Ooh, hum-drum blues

Ooh, It'll run you naughty
When you find yourself in my shoes
Stumbling along with the hum-drum blues

Don't know which way I'm goin'
I don't know which way I comе from
Rainin', or shining or snowin'
Everything's still so doggone hum-drum

The great jazz vocalist Sheila Jordan passed away earlier this week at 96(!) and I have read a number of articles about her passing. I discovered Ms. Jordan in the late 1970's when she was a member of the Steve Kuhn Quartet with Kuhn on piano, Harvie Swartz on bass and Bob Moses on drums. I caught this quartet at the Village Vanguard on several occasions and was knocked out by each performance, a truly marvelous quartet (check out their 2 ECM releases). I was introduced to Ms. Jordan, when she attended a Joe Lee Wilson gig at his loft, the Ladies Fort on Bond Street around the same time since Sheila and Joe Lee were friends. My fondest memory took place at a Joe Lee Wilson Band concert at Jazz Mania Society at loft space on 23rd Street. Ms. Jordan sat in with the band for one song and hung out afterwards as did I. When the concert was over, a few of us were hanging out around the piano which was being played by Harold Mabern. Sitting around the piano was Joe Lee, Sheila and Eddie Jefferson (all friends). Mr. Mabern was playing a bebop song and the three singers started trading scat lines, going around in circles, each singer trying to outdo whomever scat before them. It was a marvelous place to be and I felt like I was in Jazz Heaven. The singing and playing went on for the better part of an hour with Mabern taking a few inventive solos. Mabern has long been one of my favorite pianists. For the past few nights, I've been listening to several of my Sheila Jordan records, especially that quartet with Steve Kuhn. Sheila Jordan was a one-of-a-kind singer who went through some difficult times in her long life. Check out her autobiographical song "Blues for Sheila" and check out this article from the NY Times: https://www.nytimes.com/2025/08/12/arts/music/sheila-jordan-dead.html?campaign_id=9&emc=edit_nn_20250812&instance_id=160374&nl=the-morning®i_id=50416041&segment_id=203734&user_id=12b51862da3b0f8c54781a8b05ae2e0c

TWO GREAT NEW DISCS FROM THE FINE FOLKS AT TZADIK:

JOSEPH HOLBROOKE [TRIO] with DEREK BAILEY / GAVIN BRYARS / TONY OXLEY - Last Live 2001 — In Memoriam Derek Bailey and Tony Oxley (Tzadik 4056; USA) Joseph Holbrooke was a legendary all-star ensemble from the mid Sixties dedicated to free improvisation. Comprising three of the most acclaimed virtuosos from the first generation of British improvisers—Bailey, Bryars, and Oxley—little has been released, but they briefly reformed in 1998 and the studio recordings from that period were made available in 2006 on Tzadik as “The Moat Recordings.” “Last Live 2001” is exactly that—their last live concert ever! Recorded in Antwerp in January of 2001, the ensemble is at their exploratory best in this newly discovered gem from the archives of composer/improviser maestro Gavin Bryars.

ZEENA PARKINS with WILLIAM WINANT - Modesty of the Magic Thing (Tzadik 4057; USA) Composer, harpist, improviser, and educator Zeena Parkins has been a mainstay of the Downtown scene since 1984, performing with Fred Frith, John Zorn, Bjork, Ikue Mori, Yoko Ono, Pauline Oliveros, and countless others. Her newest project, years in the making, pays tribute to the fearless American visual artist Jay DeFeo. Zeena captures DeFeo’s bold experimentalism and love of beauty with a lush, exotic extended work for harp and percussion. Performing with her on a unique instrument built by legendary composer Lou Harrison is her close collaborator William Winant. One of Zeena’s most important and compelling releases, this is a major composition by a pioneering harpist/composer who still surprises after forty years of groundbreaking work!

KENNY WHEELER LEGACY with INGRID JENSEN / EVAN PARKER / CHRIS POTTER / NORMA WINSTONE / BRIAN LYNCH / ROYAL ACADEMY OF MUSIC JAZZ ORCHESTRA / FROST JAZZ ORCHESTRA / et al - some days are better - the lost scores (Greenleaf Music GRE-CD-1113; USA) This disc features two orchestras, the Royal Academy of Music and the Frost Jazz Orchestra(s) plus soloists: Evan Parker & Chris Potter on saxes, Brian Lynch, Ingrid Jensen, Nick Smart, Etienne Charles, James Copus & JOhn Daversa on trumpets & flugelhorns, Sheely Berg on piano and Norma Winstone on vocals. I've long admired the playing and music of Canadian-born, British-based trumpeter Kenny Wheeler. I recall reading about his first album as a leader, 'Windmill Tilter' (recorded 1968) in Ian Carr's great 'Music Outside' book about modern British jazz while attending college in London in the fall of 1975. The orchestra featured John McLaughlin & Dave Holland before they moved to the US. It took me more than a couple of decades to find a copy of this album, it was a sort of Holy Grail for me and other Progressive UK jazz fans. I caught Mr. Wheeler in concert on a few occasions and I have collected many of his nearly 100 releases as a leader or collaborator.
The music on this disc was composed and played live once at the BBC's Maida Vale studios for broadcast and then long buried and forgotten about.  The music that Mr. Wheeler composed for this broadcast sat in Wheeler's attic for many years and was found while Nick Smart was writing a biography about Mr. Wheeler, which was released in February of this year (2025). Author Nick Smart also plays flugelhorn, directs the Royal Academy of Music Jazz Orchestra here, is featured on two tracks and wrote the informative liner notes. This disc begins with "Smatta" which features Ingrid Jensen on trumpet. This piece swings hard and has the entire orchestra pumping tightly together with superb solos from the trumpet and flute. "Some Days are Better Suite" is warm and soaring with inspired solos from Evan Parker on tenor & soprano saxes, Nick Smart on flugel and spirited layers of horns swirling together unaccompanied by a rhythm section. Vocalist Norma Winstone, who is a longtime collaborator with Mr. Wheeler, uses her voice (no words, pure vocals only!) to sail on top of the orchestra at times to enrich the harmonies. "Dallab" has some incredibly warm and enchanting harmonies played by the entire orchestra with James Copus on flugelhorn (playing quite like Kenny Wheeler).  "Sweet Yakity Waltz" begins with one short verse with Ms. Winstone's sublime, haunting voice and is followed by a tasty tenor solo by Chris Potter. "D.G.S. features some inspired solos from Eric Law on alto sax, Brian Lynch on flugelhorn and Josh Beck on piano. "Song for Someone" was also the title track on a later Kenny Wheeler release on Incus label, released in 1973. This version features some lovely (Norma Winstone-like) vocals by Maria Quintanilla and a feisty trombone solo by Joe Evans. One of the main things that makes this disc so great, aside from a large number of spirited solos, is the writing, arranging and playing the orchestra. Both ensembles here are amazing, spirited, tight and filled with passion and invention. Considering that Kenny Wheeler composed all this music in the early 1970's (more than 50 years ago), this disc still sounds fresh and engaging today. A long buried masterpiece finally resurfaces today! - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

DAVE DOUGLAS / DAVID HAJDU with RENEE ROSNES / HELEN SUNG / AUBREY JOHNSON / CHET DOXAS / MARIKA HUGHES / SIMON WILLSON / RUDY ROYSTON / SAMUEL TORRES - Lives of the Saints (Sunnyside Communications SSC 1774; USA) Featuring Aubrey Johnson on vocals, Dave Douglas on trumpet, Chet Doxas on clarinet & tenor sax, Marika Hughs on cello, Helen Sung on piano & keyboards, Simon Willson on bass, Samuel Torres on percussion and Rudy Royston on drums. I reviewed a disc a few years back (2013) called 'Parsonage - True Tales of Love and Anarchy at 64 East 7th Street" with lyrics by poet David Hajdu about the history of a building in the east village with vocals by Theo Bleckmann. Although the music was sort of like a light operetta, I still enjoyed it immensely.
For this disc/project, author & professor David Hadju "collected his own stories of ordinary individuals who, through their deeds, attained exalted status in his mind, essentially created his own canon of secular saints." The music was written by Dave Douglas, Helen Sung, Renee Rosnes and Aubrey Johnson, who is also the vocalist featured here. The musicians include ace trumpeter Dave Douglas & tenor saxist Chet Doxas (who have worked together in recent times) with jazz keyboard wiz Helen Sung, cellist Marika Hughes (with the Tin Hat Trio & Charming Hostess), bassist Simon Willson and in-demand drummer Rudy Royston (for Bill Frisell, Ron Miles & Jon Irabagon).
"Enchantress of Number" was written for Ada Lovelace and Ms. Audrey Johnson sounds especially enchanting as she sings with Dave Douglas' trumpet playing equally charming. Since I knew little about most of the women who inspired each piece here, I had to look them up and see what was special about each one. The music, singing and words here are often honest yet sad as each of these women did something important, setting an example for other women to consider and follow. "Angelina's Cry" tells the story of Angelina Napolitano who killed her husband after his violence towards her and trying to force her into prostitution. "I Weathered the Storm" is based on singer and starlet Lena Horne, who faced quite a bit of racial stereotyping in her long life. Both the music (by Dave Douglas here), the lyrics and the singing here are consistently enchanting, giving us quite a bit to consider with each heroine featured. Considering that there are five composers here and only one vocalist, the music is consistently compelling. Mr. Douglas, Mr. Doxas and Ms. Hughes all take short, inspired solos from time to time but it is the overall performances by all involved which make this such a wonderful, consistent effort. It is the (female) resilience of the  human spirit which is featured here throughout which makes this disc a marvel on several levels. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

SEAN NOONAN with HARRY SALTZMAN / JOHNNY RICHARDS / MANDHIRA de SARAM / PATRICK DAWKINS / et al - Zappanation (Noonan Music; Earth) Drummer/composer/multi-bandleader Sean Noonan is a restless sonic explorer with numerous projects that he works, one after the other. For this disc, Mr. Noonan has composed a "surreal rock opera inspired by 20th century composers Frank Zappa and Edgar Varese. The story is based on Mozart's brothel-set opera, 'The Abduction from the Seraglio' and first performed at the Sant'Anna Arresi Jazz Fest in Sardinia, Italy in 2016. Guitarist/composer/bandleader/visionary, Frank Zappa, was my first true musical hero when I started listening to music seriously at age 13 when I discovered the Mothers of Invention. I've long noticed his world-wide influence over a wide variety of rock, prog, electronic, comedy, jazz and modern classical bands and musicians from 1966 onwards. Mr. Zappa's biggest musical hero was the iconoclastic modern classical composer Edgar Varese. Hence, I was quite intrigued to get a copy of this disc in hand to see how his influence played out for this project. I myself am also a big fan of Sean Noonan due to his surprisingly diverse and unexpected varied bands that I've heard on record and occasionally live.
Aside from drummer/composer Sean Noonan himself, there are five other vocalists here, plus a string quartet and another quintet with guitar, sax, keyboards, bass and drums. The "Zappanation Overture" opens this dics and is nearly 20 minutes long. It does sound like that crazed, Zappa-esque, over-the-top prog-like rock with hilarious operatic vocals. Each of the six singers play a different part with names like Evil Papa, Bubbles, Butterflies, Jesus, Tad and The Boy. After an explosive intro, the ensemble quiets down for a more solemn section with simmering electric piano and a somber chorus of vocalists. Although I hadn't heard of any of the musicians or singers here, some of the vocalists come from Italy while the instrumentalists come from the UK (where Noonan is currently based). Zappa is often known for his restless and at times neurotic energy and this disc seems to embody a similar freaked-out nature. Certain sections are obviously composed and tightly played, flowing seamlessly from section to section. Zappa referred to the second Mothers of Invention as an oratorio, an operas like structure where each of four singers played different parts. Noonan seems to be using his singers in similar ways at times. The singers switch off effectively on "Inflatable Friends", Another Zappa-like trait is the way these pieces keep switching direction with several layers of undercurrents morphing throughout. Although I can make out some or all of the words sung here (without a lyric sheet), the rock unit and string quartet work well together as they shift through some challenging charts. This disc also lists where we can view the video of this piece which includes cover art which reminds me of the Zappa film, '200 Motels'. I haven't watched the video yet but I have listened to this long disc several times and remain most impressed. It works on several levels musically speaking. Both Zappa fans in particular and serious listeners in general should find quite a bit to savor here. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

SEAN NOONAN & LIGETI QUARTET - Knott Tones (Noonan Music Recordings 1009; USA) Featuring Sean Noonan on drumset & compositions, Alicja Pilarczyk & Patrick Dawkins on violins, Richard Jones on viola and Valerie Welbanks on cello. Drummer/composer/multi-bandleader, Sean Noonan is a restless composer & musician who appears to have several ongoing projects in the oven all the time. Mr. Noonan has been living in London for the past few years and working with British and American musicians. His current rock quartet (with Malcolm Mooney, Ava Mendoza & Jamaaladeen Tacuma) is/are one of the best progressive bands I've heard in recent memory, their set at Victo a couple of years ago was extraordinary. Mr. Noonan recently came to visit DMG and left us with five CD's and two LP's, all but one are/were completely new to me. I reviewed his ambitious Zappa/Varese-like rock opera yesterday (8/13/25) and am now reviewing his work for string quartet and drums. The Ligeti Quartet are an English group who have been around since 2010 and have four other discs under their collective belts. This disc was released in 2021. Violist Patrick Hawkins also played on Mr. Noonan's 'Zappanation' CD and can be heard on some 40 releases since 2012.
The title track is first and Noon's brushwork is at the center of the string quartet. The music becomes more intense, more chaotic sounding yet it is also focused tightly. Things soon calm down to a more reflective, calm section, the strings weaving a quieter tapestry. I'm not sure how much Noonan has written for a string quartet in the  past but this work does stand out for the fact that he has integrated his drumming with the strings. The quartet actually sounds larger than it is, closer to the way an orchestra sounds. On "Coma" the cello and lower end strings heat up and become more rambunctious, closer to a rock quartet in sound. Unlike some of the more challenging string quartet music that I have listened to at length (Bartok, John Zorn or E#), this music still sounds spirited but without extended technique weirdness that makes things too challenging for some listeners. Mr. Noonan drumming fits well at the center of the quartet, all parts working together as one force. On "House of Donn", the quartet and skeletal percussion simmer together, the sounds most haunting and cerebral. Slowly the intensity increases to boiling point, erupting into a prog-rock like ecstasy. The last piece, "Arachnids" (a/k/a spiders), is unsettling overall with the drums at the center of the storm pushing the waves higher. I found this disc to be consistently engaging and not too challenging to listen to. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

MAJID BEKKAS / NGUYEN LE / HAMID DRAKE - Jazz At Berlin Philharmonic XVII: Gnawa World Blues (Act Music 8007-2; EEC) Three continents, three musical world citizens. Morocco-born Majid Bekkas, Franco-Vietnamese Nguyên Lê and American Hamid Drake have combined their astonishing musicality, their origins and their global experiences to create a captivating live concert program encompassing desert blues, Gnawa trance, Middle Eastern jazz, sixties rock and Far Eastern serenity.
Voice, oud and guembri (bass lute)...electric guitar with a wide spectrum of shimmering timbres...a percussion arsenal between subtlety and physicality - these are the tools of the three world-class, globe-trotting protagonists here. Majid Bekkas's innovations have cast a wholly new light onto the fascinating music and culture of the Gnawa minority in Morocco, and he has also worked with jazz greats such as Joachim Kühn, Archie Shepp and Pharoah Sanders, and, most recently, with the Magic Spirit Quartet, whose recordings for ACT have built a bridge between Nordic and African sound worlds. Among the great guitarists of our time Nguyên Lê is one of the most exciting and individual personalities, having developed a unique style in which Southeast Asian melodies, complex jazz harmonies and highly virtuoso excursions into rock naturally co-exist. And Chicago-born Hamid Drake, with his intuitive feel for many of the world's percussion traditions, provides an improbably wide range of rhythmic impulses.
The repertoire which the three performed so memorably on 10 November 2024 reflects a tremendous wealth of ideas which fuse and coalesce, from the desert blues three-way conversation of the opening piece to the Gnawa grooves of 'Mrahba' and 'Sidi Bouganga'; from the earthy John Lee Hooker tribute in 'Boom Boom' to the feverish rock ecstasy of the Hendrix classic 'Purple Haze'; from the Asian reflectivness of 'Thang Long' to the fast-forward interplay of 'Tair'.
Three stellar musicians have drawn on their musical heritages - and created a celebration of human kinship which is breathtakingly alive.

ROBERT DICK / LESZEK HEFI WISNIOWSKI - Powers of Two (Hefi Records 01/2023; Poland) Featuring Robert Dick on flute with Glissando Headjoint, bass flute & piccolo and Leszek Hefi Wisniowski on flute with Glissando & Abell Whistle Headjoints, prepared flute, pearl bass flute, bansuri and duduk. Last night at DMG (8/12/2025), the duo played an extraordinary concert. Both are flute virtuosos from very different backgrounds. Robert Dick wrote a book called on extended techniques for flutes, is an early member of the Downtown Scene with some 30 releases to his name (going back to 1979). Leszek Hefi Wisniowski is Polish and has five discs as a leader going back to 2006. Mr.Dick and Hefi had just played at a flute festival in Washington, DC earlier this week. I realize that there are listeners out there who do not take the flute seriously but this is not true for me. I have long dug the wide variety of flute work from Hubert Laws, Eric Dolphy, Thomas Chapin, James Newton and Doug Ewart. Listening to this disc, I can hear how diverse and inventive these flutists are. "Let Us Go and Stand on the Moon" opens and I am amazed at the varied and expressive sounds here. The bass flute has a deep and distinctive sound which opens this piece with the other player talking or speaking through his flute. There are a number of sounds here which make it difficult to tell that they are coming from a flute. Hefi plays what sounds like ancient Baroque flute lines while Mr. Dick bends notes with his glissando flute, both fluttering together and around one another. Each piece explores different terrain, textures, timbre and/or sounds. There are a wide array of sounds here, often percussive in nature which are produced by just tapping on the flute pads and altering the stream of notes with the breath. Both flutists play glissando or slide flute at times here, together and apart. Bending notes on the flute (or other instruments) has a way of disorienting the listener, similar to the way that microtonal music also sounds not quite right to some listeners. If any of you don't take the flute as a serious and expressive instrument, I urge you to give this disc a listen or two. There is quite a bit more going on here than most folks might think. I also like the sound of the duduk which is played by Hefi here and has a distinctive sort of forlorn sound. What stands out here is that both of these musicians are virtuosos and that they are able to exchange ideas at a quick pace in an extended dialogue of near infinite sounds. Stunning throughout! - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

TRIO ROUGE with MICHEL GODARD / VINCENT COURTOIS / LUCILLA GALEAZZI - Trio Rouge (Intuition 33532; Germany) Together, Courtois, Godar & Galeazzi have founded a trio that is unequalled - as to its content, music & sensitivity. Tuba, violoncello and vocals. This sounds like experiment, like highly individual capers in the wake of the avant-garde. To Trio Rouge, however, such prejudice does not apply. For Michel Godard, Vincent Courtois and Lucilla Galeazzi devote themselves to the tradition of the Italian lied. The concept of 'canzone' is in this case too narrowly defined for the spectrum of musical ideas and heirlooms ranges from tender love songs via spontaneously improvised passages to angry Resistance verses from the First World War. The leader of the ensemble is the singer Lucilla Galeazzi. Born in Terni, she took to Italian & especially Umbrian folk music during her student days and has included it in quite different projects since. Since her first attempts as an artist in the 'Quatuor vocal' of Giovanna Marini (1977) she has consistently earned her place in the Mediterranean music scene. In 1990 she got in touch with the group of the ARFI in Lyons, and it was through this connection that she got to know the other members of the future Trio Rouge.
These musicians are all masters of their trade. The tuba player Michel Godard was noticed by the musical public in the mid-1990s when he worked in the groups of Rabih Abou-Khalil and Louis Sclavis. With his striking individual style and seemingly unlimited virtuosity, Godard has extended the technical possibilities of the tuba and also revived the serpent, a Renaissance instrument.
Vincent Courtois on the other hand, is one of the whizz-kids of the European jazz scene. His international breakthrough also came with projects of Rabih Abou-Khalil and Louis Sclavis. Since the late 1990s Vincent has been among the international elite of his cello generation. Together, Courtois, Godar & Galeazzi have founded a trio that is unequaled - as to its content, music and sensitivity with which the musicians translate their ideas into creative sound structures with Mediterranean atmosphere.

MOTOHARU YOSHIZAWA / KIM DAE HWAN - Way of the Breeze (NoBusiness Chap Chap Series NBCD 176; Lithuania) Featuring Motoharu Yoshizawa on homemade electric vertical five string bass and Kim Dae Hwan on percussion. Legendary Japanese free/jazz contrabassist, Motoharu Yoshizawa had been in the Japanese free/jazz scene since the late 1960's, working with Elvin Jones, Derek Bailey, Steve Lacy and Haino Keiji. Korean free form percussionist, Kim Dae Hwan, is a cousin of saxist Kang Tae Hwan and has worked with bassist Barre Phillips and trumpeter Choi Sun Bae. This session was recorded at Cafe Amores in Hofu City, Japan in September of 1993. Mr. Yoshizawa is using a custom/hand-made 5 string bass for this set as well as using a variety of effects and electronic sounds. The bass has a unique, odd sound which I find to be rather mysterious. Both instruments are close mic'd and well-recorded. Things begin quietly with solemn ritualistic mallet-work on the drums with eerie bowed bass. Kim Dae Hwan's drumming has a rich tribal sound, pounding, throbbing from quieter to more intense segments while the bass is bowed with select haunting effects. The music sounds like a journey through rhythmic, melodic and ritualistic rapids, from slow and steady to moderate paced with a throbbing groove at the center. The bowed bass with effects also has an organic feel with whale-like chanting vocals at times. The suspense builds steadily throughout as we travel from one planet or land to the next on our magic carpet ride to wherever we end up. There is a balancing act going on here as we sail or soar so trty not to fall in or you might drown. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

BOBBY CONN with MICHAEL ZERANG / AIRAN WRIGHT / MONICA BOUBOU / JIM DALLAS COOPER / JOSH JOHANPETER / et al - Bobby's Place (Tapete Records TR 594LP; Germany) Welcome to Bobby's Place, the new split personality album from long time musical mischief maker and cultural provocateur Bobby Conn! Side A finds Bobby living in a tent somewhere on the astral plane surrounded by synthesizers, woodwinds, hand drums and a pulsating psychedelic fog. Planet Earth and the temporal plane are only faintly visible in the distance. Bobby is joined by his partner in crime Monica BouBou on violin, and DJ LeDeuce on unknown electronics making three long form journeys through polyrhythmic soundscapes. Master percussionist Michael Zerang (Peter Brötzmann Tentet, among many others), virtuoso flautist Constance Volk (Ensemble Dal Niente, Twyla Tharp Dance), and bassoonist Airan Wright (Mucca Pazza) come along for the ride. While sonic exploration has always been an aspect of Bobby's music, this is his purest expression to date. Side One finds Bobby starring in an alternative reality workplace sitcom also called "Bobby's Place." In each episode Bobby starts a new small business, like a restaurant or a nail salon, with a team of puppets, but the business inevitably fails and ends in bankruptcy by the end of the show. Bobby sings odes to blind (emphasis on blind) optimism in the face of rising Fascism and the decadent decay of late capitalism, joined once again by Monica BouBou and his band from 2020's Recovery release (TR 450CD): Josh Johannpeter, Jim "Dallas" Cooper, Devin Davis, and Billie Howard. The album was recorded at Bobby's home studio in Chicago over the summer of 2024 and mixed by the brilliant Cooper Crain (Bitchin' Bajas). Bobby Conn is a vocalist, songwriter, and performance artist working in Chicago. He came out of the Chicago "No-Wave" noise and performance scene in the mid-90's but quickly developed a reputation for extravagantly excessive performances, satirically political lyrics, and experimental, electro glam art rock. He collaborates with his partner and violinist Monica BouBou, DJ and sound designer Adam "DJ LeDeuce" Greuel, longtime rhythm section Jim "Dallas" Cooper and Josh Johannpeter, as well as many talented players in the Chicago classical, jazz and improvisational scene. With Monica, he often performs as a minimalist electro duo with sequenced backing tracks, and also performs at larger events with his seven-piece Superband.

SONOLOGYST - Planetarium (Cold Spring Records 359CD; UK) An aural exploration of the solar system by Italian deep sound master Sonologyst, using data from NASA's probes. On this album, raw data from radio waves, electromagnetic fields, and plasma fluctuations, utilizing data sonification files provided by NASA, are transformed into a haunting soundscape, unveiling the ambient music of planets, solar winds, and the cosmic beyond. As the newest addition to Sonologyst's series of sonic documentaries, this work deepens his exploration of the sonic spectrum, converting cosmic phenomena into immersive auditory experiences. NASA and other space agencies have captured "sounds" from the cosmos by recording non-audible signals like radio waves, electromagnetic waves, and plasma (ionized gas that's prevalent in space) wave fluctuations. These are converted into audio frequencies we can hear using a process called data sonification. Spacecraft like Voyager, Cassini, and Juno are equipped with special instruments (e.g., plasma wave antennas, magnetometers, radio wave receivers) to detect radio waves, plasma waves, and electromagnetic fields. These signals can provide data on phenomena like solar wind, planetary magnetospheres, and charged particles. Since many of these signals are outside our hearing range (radio waves might have frequencies far below the audible range (20 Hz to 20 kHz) or far above it, while magnetic and plasma waves are often in the range of milliHertz (mHz) to kilohertz (kHz), also outside human hearing), they are converted using various techniques, including frequency scaling, sampling, filtering, and amplitude modulation. Some events, like plasma wave bursts, happen over long periods. Scientists may speed up the playback so people can hear the changes in a shorter time frame. After conversion, the resulting sounds are often enhanced to make certain patterns, pitches, or changes in intensity more noticeable. This may involve amplifying certain frequencies or adding layers to represent multi-dimensional data. This processing helps bring out subtle differences that might otherwise be hard to discern. Double CD in a matt-finish gatefold ecopak, with a bonus disc of the raw source material from NASA's probes.

WOJTEK MAZOLEWSKI QUINTET - Live Spirit (NoPaper Records WMQ 010CD; Poland) Wojtek Mazolewski Quintet (WMQ) -- one of the most charismatic groups on the European jazz scene -- returns with Live Spirit I, a new double album recorded at the iconic Witold Lutosławski Polish Radio Concert Studio in Warsaw. The release features four brand-new compositions alongside electrifying new takes on WMQ classics, including a stunning 20-minute version of "Polka," the title track from their best-selling record. This is WMQ at its core: deeply rooted in Polish jazz tradition, elevated by the spiritual depth and uninhibited virtuosity of improvisation, and shaped by a distinctly modern sensibility and urban energy. Live Spirit I is not just a celebration of the group's unmistakable sound -- it's a powerful reflection of their ongoing evolution. The album was recorded during the international tour for their critically acclaimed studio release Beautiful People (WMQ 009LP). Alongside the Warsaw concert, the quintet performed dozens of shows worldwide -- selling out Londons Jazz Cafe and earning ovations in Chile, Argentina, Colombia, and Mexico. As both a virtuoso bassist and composer, Mazolewski seamlessly blends traditional jazz with contemporary influences, creating a sound that is both hypnotic and emotionally charged. His 2014 album Polka was named one of the five best jazz records of the year by DownBeat, and earned high praise from Kind of Jazz in the UK. The follow-up, When Angels Fall -- featuring reimaginings of Krzysztof Komeda's compositions -- was also widely acclaimed by outlets like DownBeat and London Jazz News. His latest studio project Beautiful People showcases a bold immersion in spiritual jazz traditions, while remaining deeply rooted in Slavic culture and sharply attuned to the pulse of the present. Live Spirit I captures WMQ in peak form: a tightly unified collective that shifts effortlessly from meditative focus to ecstatic improvisational flights, powered by the energy of a live audience. Mazolewski's compositions flourish in this setting, revealing a potent mix of vitality and groove - qualities that have kept jazz relevant across generations and continue to attract new listeners.

REISSUES & HISTORIC RECORDINGS:

ELLIOTT SHARP'S TERRAPLANE with HUBERT SUMLIN - Do The Don't (Intuition 34252; Germany) Blues as nostalgic roots music? No way! A blues avant-garde formed in the US some time ago which sensitively incorporates the achievements of tradition and transforms them into an aggressive music of the future. They need neither computers nor any other electronic means, but can build on the resources and repertoire of classical blues. Before acts like Hazmat Modine, the Black Keys, and Son Of Dave developed their future blues, it was first of all New York guitarist Elliott Sharp who made new audiences aware of electronically amplified blues. With his band Terraplane, he has been opening up new paths for the blues since the mid-1990s. His 1994 debut album Terraplane, which was recorded when the group was still a trio, is probably the most efficient synthesis of blues and punk in recent rock history.
Elliott Sharp's guitar salvos on Do The Don't leave no doubt that this album is only going in one direction - forward. To that end, he surrounds himself with a superb crew. The vocals are provided by the duo of Eric Mingus & Dean Bowman. Mingus lives up to his name; the son of jazz icon Charles Mingus is as nonconformist, powerful & full of energy as his father. Bassist David Hofstra played with the Microscopic Septet and, together with Sharp, in Wayne Horvitz's The President. The unflappable veteran, who crosses the line between avant-garde and tradition, was one of the founding members of Terraplane. Drummer Sim Cain is known particularly for his percussive thunder with the Rollins Band. Jazz musician Sam Furnace, who died shortly after the album was recorded, gave Terraplane's sound an earthiness with his baritone saxophone that makes the music moist and rich for all its urbanity. Hubert Sumlin enhances the CD as a special guest. Sumlin is not only one of the last surviving blues authorities, but to some extent is also Sharp's blues mentor.

BENNY GOLSON with CURTIS FULLER / ART FARMER / McCOY TYNER / RAY BRYANT / JOHN LEWIS / WYNTON KELLY / TOMMY FLANAGAN / CEDAR WALTON / PAUL CHAMBERS / RON CARTER / ART BLAKEY / LEX HUMPHRIES / ALBERT HEATH / JIMMY COBB / ART TAYLOR - In the 1960's (Enlightenment 9246; EEC) Legendary jazz saxophonist Benny Golson was a prolific player, composer, and arranger, renowned for his rich tenor sound and sophisticated compositions. A key figure in the hard bop era, he penned timeless jazz standards like "I Remember Clifford," "Whisper Not," and "Killer Joe." Golson's work was pivotal in bridging complex harmonies with lyrical expressiveness, and his role in The Jazztet and collaborations with Art Blakey and Clifford Brown helped shape modern jazz. This collection brings together some the finest recordings Benny Golson produced as leader or co-leader during his long career, and contains eight complete original albums, spread across four compact discs, all in superior remastered audio quality. Serving as both a perfect introduction to the work of this musical giant and a welcome reminder of the man's finest output, this delightful set will remain among the finest collections of this jazz master's work. The albums include: 'Groovin' with Golson', 'Meet the Jazztet', 'The Jazztet and John Lewis', 'Turning Point', 'Free', 'Gettin' with It', 'Big City Sounds'.

PSYCHIC TV - A Prayer For Derek Jarman (Cold Spring Records 351CD; UK) Unavailable for almost 30 years in its own right, this collection from the Cold Spring archive has been repackaged and remastered with new art. This classic album exists as a document of the soundtrack work Psychic TV created for the many films and videos of Derek Jarman. Another demonstration of why Psychic TV were one of the most important groups in the world. The titular track, "Prayer For Derek," is intended as an invocationary prayer, based on Tibetan rituals; a collage of sounds including field recordings of the lulling waves running aground on the shingle beach opposite Jarman's Prospect Cottage in Dungeness, Kent alongside bird song, crying babies, and massed ritualized chants to aid the late film director in his after-life journeys. Other tracks feature elongated drones, washes of dissonance, melancholic guitar chime, evocative piano scoring, Burroughs cut-ups, gothic chants, and familiar snarling gods. CD is featured in matt digipak with eight-page fold-out booklet, with detailed liner notes by Genesis P-Orridge (1997); Astorical anecdotes and background facts for completeness.

LP SECTION:

HENRY COW with FRED FRITH / TIM HODGKINSON / GEOFF LEIGH / JOHN GREAVES / CHRIS CUTLER - Leg End (ReR Vinyl VHC1; UK) 2025 repress. ReR Vinyl present a reissue of Henry Cow's Leg End, originally released in 1979. This was the first time together on record for Fred Frith, Tim Hodgkinson, Chris Cutler, John Greaves, and Geoff Leigh. An extension and fusion of the key influences of Soft Machine and Frank Zappa, the album is packed full of extraordinary tunes, complex but never pompous arrangements, and great improvisations. It defines a whole new world of European music. Indispensable really.
LP $28

KEIJI HAINO - Watashi Dake? (Black Editions BE 000LP; Earth) Black Editions present the first vinyl reissue of Keiji Haino's stunning debut album Watashi Dake?, originally released in 1981. This first ever edition released outside of Japan features the artist's originally intended metallic gold and silver jacket artwork. Over the last fifty years few musicians or performers have created as monumental and uncompromising a body of work as that of Keiji Haino. Through a vast number of recordings and performances, Haino has staked out a ground all his own, creating a language of unparalleled intensity that defies any simple classification. For all this, his 1981 debut album Watashi Dake? has remained enigmatic. Originally released in a small edition by the legendary Pinakotheca label, the album was heard by only a select few in Japan and far fewer overseas. Original vinyl copies became impossibly rare and highly sought after the world over. Watashi Dake? presents a haunting vision -- stark vocals, whispered and screamed, punctuate dark silences. Intricate and sharp guitar figures interweave, repeat, and stretch, trance-like, emerging from dark recesses. Written and composed on the spot -- Haino's vision is one of deep spiritual depths that distantly evokes 1920s blues and medieval music -- yet is unlike anything ever committed to record before or since. Produced in close cooperation with Keiji Haino and legendary photographer Gin Satoh. Coupled with starkly minimal packaging, featuring the now iconic cover photographs by Gin Satoh, the album is a startling and fully realized artistic statement. Housed in custom printed deluxe Stoughton tip-on jackets, including black on black inserts, extras, and hand-colored finishes; Remastered by Elysian Masters and cut by Bernie Grundman Mastering; Pressed to high quality vinyl at RTI; Includes download code.

JOHNNY M. DYANI with CLIFFORD JARVIS - African Bass (Red Musical 123339LP; Spain) "I could play jazz, but, first of all, I play black music. We have a message. Louis Armstrong had it, Ellington had it, and Gillespie has it. It can be political, sociological, economic, it can be about the good times or the bad ones. It is our way of communicating. You don't have to read big books about a country or a population to know what they want. Listen to the music and you will know what they have to say." - Johnny Dyani
LP $34

DANNIE RICHMOND QUINTET with RICKY FORD / JACK WALRATH / BOB NELOMS / CAMERON BROWN - Dionysius (Red Musical 123161; Spain) "In the spring of 1983, taking advantage of the Italian dates of the European tour, the quintet agreed to record some pieces at Studio Cavalieri in Bari. A vibrant quintet with Ricky Ford on tenor saxophone, Jack Walrath on trumpet, Bob Neloms on piano and Cameron Brown on bass in the thankless role of substituting Mingus. This is how Dionysius was born, an album showing a vital and creative ensemble in each of its components. Dionysius was the last album recorded in studio in his own name who finished his days on earth because of a stroke in New York on March 15th, 1988."
LP $34

CEDAR WALTON - More Blues For Myself (Red Musical 123333LP; Spain) "Red Records record a piano solo album in 1985, Blues For Myself, a work that has even been mentioned in the Penguin Guide To Jazz by Richard Cook and Brian Morton, in which the pianist alternates the execution of his own compositions with some famous standards, and decided today to extract the alternate takes of some of those tracks and give to the press this More Blues For Myself. It is the worthy conclusion of a work that will reconcile the fans with some of the characteristics that make jazz -- a term that some don't want to use anymore, but this is another story yet to be told -- a fascinating and pleasantly charming world."
LP $43

GLENN BRANCA - The Ascension (Superior Viaduct SV 056LP; USA) "Glenn Branca's first full-length album The Ascension is a colossal achievement. After touring much of 1980 with an all-star band featuring four guitarists (Branca, fellow composers Ned Sublette and David Rosenbloom, and future Sonic Youth member Lee Ranaldo) along with Jeffrey Glenn on bass and Stephan Wischerth on drums, Branca took his war-torn group into a studio in Hell's Kitchen to record five incendiary compositions. Originally released in the summer of 1981, The Ascension effectively tears down the genre-ghettos between 20th century avant-garde and ecstatic rock 'n' roll. On 'The Spectacular Commodity,' chiming, shimmering tones unfold into sinister drone-territory à la Tony Conrad, while abrasive guitars and repetitive beats retain the raw primitivism of No Wave. The title track attains a densely packed, larger-than-life sound and (as author Marc Masters says best) 'never stops climbing skyward.' With artist Robert Longo's stark front cover that depicts Branca battling an unidentified man, The Ascension is a must-have record not only for fans of early Swans and Sonic Youth, but also of Steve Reich or Slint's Tweez."
LP $32

THE VELVET UNDERGROUND - White Light/White Heat (Vinyl Lovers VL 900044LP; Russian Federation) While 1967's Velvet Underground & Nico was a part of Andy Warhol's global artistic vision, 1968's White Light/White Heat was free of all Warholian influence, so in a way it could be thought of as another debut album. Here the music was left to fester on its own, with no artistic visionary interfering or trying to create a soundtrack for his pop art, and the Velvets filled that void with an album that is an aural subway car full of drunkards, junkies and whores rumbling through the bowels of NYC with a one way ticket to oblivion. Includes 3 bonus tracks.
LP $30

THIS NOTE COMES FROM MY GOOD BUDDY JOEL HARRISON, Gifted Guitarist and Organizer. His yearly concerts at LPR have been a highlight for myself and other Guitar Freaks…

Dear Guitar Enthusiasts … There's a lot going:

—MIDWESTERNERS: please take note of the below dates. I'm lucky to be playing with two of the greatest B-3 organ players alive, and fantastic drummers as well. https://joelharrison.com/shows/

—On March 14 AGS (Alternative Guitar Summit) recordings releases ANUPAM SHOBHAKAR'S LIQUID REALITY, a tour de force on double neck guitar that fuses Indian music, jazz, and rock. If you like John McLaughlin this is for you. Preorder here: https://agsrecordings.bandcamp.com/

—We have uploaded some GREAT NEW PODCASTS to the AGS youtube channel with Ben Monder, Redd Volkaert, and more to come. Please check it out.

—For a couple of years I have been working on a major piece entitled "Burn Pit." The orchestration is jazz big band and a 16 person chorus. The subject matter is the deadly toxic burnpits from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan that killed or sickened hundreds of thousands of military personnel. To fulfill my obligation to the NY State Council on the Arts and the Governors Office of NY, from whom I received a generous composition grant, I have posted a video discussing and playing excerpts from this work here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ulyk1Pgrym8

Don't forget to sign up for our summer camp! Kevin Eubanks, Vernon Reid, Kurt Rosenwinkel, John Scofield...come on! https://www.alternativeguitarsummitcamp.com/ - Joel Harrison

From CHRIS CUTLER:

Formerly of HENRY COW, THE ART BEARS, NEWS FOR BABEL & RECOMMENDED RECORDS (ReR) has been creating an ongoing series of podcasts called the Probes series. I am often fascinated at listening to each of these as Mr. Cutler does an incredible job of showing a deep history of Creative Music in the 20th century & beyond. I usually listen to these on the train to NYC that I take to get to work each day. The most recent Probes (#37) was released earlier this year, here are the links:
