Doralee, there's gravel in your bathtub
Fish swam free, looking for their ocean moon
You once loved a man whose heart was big & open
He said he could see the beauty in us all
Doralee, there are flies among the dead now
Fish swam free, looking for their ocean moon
You once loved a man whose heart was big & open
He said he could see the beauty in us all

While working at the first DMG location (East 5th St, bet 2nd & 3 Aves) in 2002, I received a promo copy of Jesse Sykes' first album and played on a Sunday night, as I did every Sunday, playing whatever promos came in that week. After playing it through once and looking at the cover, a pic of Ms. Sykes smoking a cigarette in a booth at a bar, something grabbed me about the music and cover. Although the music (atmospheric roots rock) and words were somewhat depressing, they still rang true to me. It reached deep into my heart and touched me. I became a big fan and played that CD every night for around a year before I left the store to go home. I became a big fan of Ms. Sykes & her band, the Sweet Hereafter, especially digging the production of Tucker Martine (whom I refer to as the West Coast Daniel Lanois). Ms. Sykes' band featured her then boyfriend, Phil Wandscher, on lead guitar & other instruments, Phil was also her cowriter. The band went on to make four albums between 2002 and 2011, each one more rockin' than the previous one and each one was superb! I also caught Ms. Sykes and the band live on three occasions (at The Fez, Joe's Pub & Bowery Ballroom), and each set was wonderful! After her last one, 'Marble Son' was released in 2011, the band broke up and Ms. Sykes relationship with Mr. Wandscher came to an end. Then nothing, as Ms. Sykes left the music business and began working on non-music related videos. Many of her die-hard fans (like myself) were devastated by this turn of events. I wrote to Ms. Sykes once after the band break up and asked if she was going to release a new record. She said that she had lost her mojo to write songs and had no idea if she would come back.
Fast forward to 2020 when I found out (thanks to Manny/Lunch) that Ms. Sykes had joined a new band called Third Mind which included Dave Alvin (formerly of the Blasters), two ex-members of Camper Van Beethoven, drummer Michael Jerome (from the Richard Thompson Band) and Mark Karan (from several offshoot Dead projects). When I first heard the first Third Mind LP, I was completely blown away since the band was/is an incredible, psychedelic jam band, covering 60's gems like "East West" (by the Butterfield Blues Band), "The Dolphins' & "A Little Bit of Rain" (both by folk guru Fred Neil), "Groovin' is easy" (Electric Flag), "Sally Go Round the Roses" (originally by the Jaynettes & later by the Great Society) and the post-apocalyptic ballad "Morning Dew" (written by Bonnie Dobson & covered by the Grateful Dead). Earlier this year, Yep Rock released 'Live Mind', an incredible concert recording by Third Mind. For this record, Jesse Sykes resurrects a song called "Dora Lee" from her first album. The words are above so check them out, there is something deep going on there. I just found out that my current favorite psych band, Third Mind, is/are going on tour this fall and are playing at White Eagle Hall in Jersey City, NJ on October 18th! If you are still an old or young psych fan like yours truly, you don't want to miss this one. We have stocked CD and LP copies of all 3 Third Mind releases so you can order them from us if you choose. We've sold more copies of these discs than any other store on the planet! Please give Third Mind a listen, it is Sonic Medicine for the Mind, Heart and Soul. Who Loves you bubbies!?! That's me, MC-BruceLee

THIS WEEK'S NEW DISCS BEGIN WITH SOME BAY AREA GREATS:
STEVE ADAMS / LISA MEZZACAPPA / JASON LEVIS - never but dream the days (Queen Bee Records QB 009; USA) Featuring Syeve Adams on sopranino, alto & bari saxes, flutes & electronics, Lisa Mezzacappa on contrabass and Jason Levis on drums. Reeds great Steve Adams is a longtime member of the ROVA Sax Quartet, joining them around 1990. Mr. Adams has long done all sorts of other leader or collaborator projects with Vinny Golia, Ken Filiano and the (beyond weird) Nudbug Ensemble. Bay Area-bass great Lisa Mezzacappa has a half dozen discs as a leader, as well as working with many other West Coasters like Aaron Novik, Vinny Golia and Karl Evangelista. Bay Area drummer, Jason Levis, has also worked with Ms. Mezzacappa in several projects. Both Lisa Mezzacappa and Jason Levis will be making a rare appearance at The Stone this week (July 23rd-26th, 2025) so come on down to check them out.
This disc appears to be an all improvised project. "the old crux" opens with Mr. Adams on sopranino playing a spiraling solo, backed by a robust rhythm team. The tempo keeps changing, speeding up and slowing down in places, yet the trio plays tightly as one. Even when things slow down and become more sparse in the second half of this piece, the trio sounds focused. On "faint and false" the bass and drums begin freely and sound connected with Mr. Adams' flute soon floating on top. Mr. Adams switches to baritone sax on "struck by the contrary", the trio playing most organically together, consistently connected with several lines moving tightly around one another. For the title track, it sounds like Mr. Adams is playing a lovely ballad-like melody with the rest of the trio providing subtle support. Drummer Jason Levis sounds especially strong here playing sprawling mallets on his drums while Ms. Mezzacappa bows underneath and Mr. Adams sails on top. Each piece here sounds like a scene from a film or a short story unfolding. On "bury me, avalanche" the alto-led trio is burning freely and powerfully, tight and eruptive. Adams adds some eerie electronics to the last piece, "howling, soughing, moaning and sighing", giving the intro a most haunting vibe before the rest of the trio start to ascend together. This disc is a particularly strong date for all three of these seasoned improvising musicians. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

* GREEN MITCHELL TRIO with CORY WRIGHT / LISA MEZZACAPPA / JASON LEVIS - Nature Channel (Queen Bee Records QB 006; USA) Featuring Cory Wright on tenor sax & bass clarinet & compositions, Lisa Mezzacappa on contrabass and Jason Levis on drums. Bay area reeds player, Cory Wright, has worked with Adam Rudolph, Vinny Golia, Jack O' The Clock and co-leads the Bristle quartet. Both bassist Lisa Mezzacappa and drummer Jason Levis have worked together with Aaron Novik and have a duo called Duo B (with a handful of records released). "Sunday Monday" opens with a solemn, laid back vibe, the playing is skeletal and somewhat eerie. The music does capture a somber Sunday-like vibe. Ms. Mezzacappa's bass is featured on "Lumps", a playful piece, which starts one way and then turns around a few times. The title piece features Mr. Wright on bass clarinet and has a challenging, quick-changing set of changes. Wright stays in the lower end of the bass clarinet, playing some long, well-written lines which keep changing throughout. Mezzacappa's slow walking bass sets the pace for "Valk", a somber throb at the center pulsates throughout. Mr. Wright takes a long, simmering tenor solo, choosing and bending each note carefully. This is the long piece here and it sounds like a series of scenes unfolding one at a time. Some sections are sparse yet there is on ongoing central pulse which pulsates at times and then submerges into a quieter section. The last piece, "Langourie" has a rich slow-paced vibe which is calm at the center. It has a solemn, lullabye-like vobe which sounds like a good way to bring this subduesd yet graceful disc to a fine close. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

* THIS TRIO IS PLAYING AT THE STONE THIS WEEK!
LORI GOLDEN - Open Space (Relative Pitch Records RPR 1223; USA) Featuring Lori Goldston on cello. When Ms. Goldston played here at DMG in December of 2024 in a duo with Chris Cochrane, her name sounded familiar to me, but I wasn't sure from where. It turns out that Seattle-based cellist, Ms. Goldston toured with Nirvana, has a solo effort of film scores released by Sub Rosa, collaborated with Earth and once worked with Sue Ann Harkey (early Downtown experimental guitarist). Ms. Goldston has some two dozen records out of mostly solos and duo efforts. Right from the opening, Ms. Goldston's cello sounds vast, larger than life. The cello sounds close mic'd, ever expanding as she bows. As she bows one long droning note, the drone is expanding, resonating, The ongoing drone note is bent with a selective amount of distortion used. I like the way the cello sounds here, bigger than usual, rather organic is the way it expands. Considering that Ms Golston has works with the doom metal band Earth, the way the cello sounds is similar in its vastness of sound. It is hard to tell exactly what we are hearing since the sound is so thick and somewhat dense. Although the overall sound doesn't change that much, the way that sound expands and contracts is still fascinating, churning, rocking back and forth, wave upon wave. It sounds like we are balancing on a raft or boat which is rocking back and forth slowly. The vibe is rather uneasy as if we are about to lose our balance and be plunged into the water and washed away. Alway the water looks murky, we can also rise above the waves and be washed in transcendence. Although this is a solo cello effort, it sounds much more than just that one instrument. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

STAN ZENKOV / KRIS GRUDA - Brooklyn Basement Duets (Ossicles; USA) Featuring Stan Zenkov on bass clarinet, cornet & preparations and Kris Gruda on electric guitar, objects & preparations. Dedicated to the late Michael Evans, Downtown percussionist & instrument maker who passed away in August of 2021. Stan Zenkov and Kris Gruda met here at DMG after they performed separately during our ongoing in-store performance series. Both have performed here on several occasions throughout the last few years. Oddly enough the recording here is warm, clean and focused as if we are in the same small room with these two musicians. What's interesting is that although Zenkov is playing bass clarinet and Gruda is playing guitar, the sounds (tone-wise) is quite similar. The duo start out slowly and build their way organically, always playing in tight fragments. Zenkov switches to cornet (a smaller trumpet-like instrument favored by Don Cherry), both he and Gruda playing tight spiraling lines in linked orbits around one another. No matter which instrument that Mr. Zenkov plays, Mr. Gruda matches him, both men constantly exchanging lines, intertwining, uniting, a constant free-flowing dialogue. This disc shows two Downtown musicians at their best in an intimate, focused setting. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

THREE MORE DISCS FROM THE ONGOING ILK MUSIC SALE:
EGGS LAID BY TIGERS with JONAS WESTERGAARD / MARTIN DAHL / SIMON TOLDAM / PETER BRUUN - Performs Music from Under the Miles Off Moon & This Red Eyed Earth (Ilk Music 197CD; Denmark) Featuring Jonas Westergaard on vocals & banjo, Martin Ullitz Dahl on electric & cacoustic guityars & vocal, Peter Bruun on fingerpicking guitar & drums plus guests Simon Toldam on pianos & organ, Ander Banke on woodwinds, Jakob Munck on trombone & tuba and Jimmy Nyborg on trumpet. All of the lyrics here come from the poetry of legendary Welch poet Dylan Thomas. Although it did seem odd at first to have a Danish quartet singing the words (in English) by Dylan Thomas to their own music, this is what we have here. And it works! The music has that British music hall somewhat goofy sort of sound. The music has a 60's or perhaps 70's roots rock sound with layered guitars, and nicely harmonized vocals. Several horns are used for their tasty harmonies. I found this disc to be immensely charming. It sounds like an ancient folk rock classic with forlorn vocals and tasty, thoughtful arranging. If someone told me that this was recorded in the late 1960's by an unknown British roots rock band, I would no doubt believe them. An unexpected delight. - Bruce Lee Gallanter at DMG
CD Sale $10
JEPPE GRAM KVARTET with FREDRIK LUNDIN / NILS DAVIDSEN / SOREN KJAEGAARD - Liquid Sound (Ilk Music 288CD; Denmark) Featuring Fredrik Lundin on tenor & mezzo-soprano saxes, Soren Kjaergaard on piano, Nils Bo Davidsen on bass and Jeppe Gram on drums & compositions. I know of each member of this quartet from different projects: Frederik Lundin (from work with Jon Balke, Stefan Pasborg & a Leadbelly project), Nils Davidsen (from Kasper Tranberg, Bobby Previte & Rakalam Bob Moses), Soren Kjaergaard (for Michael Blake, Living Room & Soren's own trio with Andrew Cyrille & Ben Street) and Jeppe Gram (from Band Apart & Jakob Bro).
"Alene" opens and is spacious, lush, laid back, suspense-filled and lovely. Tenor saxist Frederik Lundin has a rich, tasty, old school, warm, dreamy tone on his sax with the rest of the quartet playing sublimely around him. Soren Kjaergaard's piano is often featured and sounds marvelous on each piece. The production here is also superb, perhaps ECM-like but with more warmth. On each piece, Mr. Gram has composed a thoughtful melody which the quartet plays a lyrical sense, and a lush, dreamy sound. Nobody overplays here, all four members serve the song as one haunting song. Smoky, simmering, ever-enchanting and with a tasty sense of restraint. This is one of the best discs in the Ilk Music catalogue. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

ALAN LAMB - Archival Recordings: Primal Image/Beauty (Room40 4240CD; Australia) A note from Lawrence English: "Time is a strange and elusive companion. Listening to Alan Lamb's Primal Image/Beauty, the traces of time are deep, and forever deepening. Recorded in 1981 and 1983 respectively, and then revised and refined across the coming half decade, each of these pieces traces Lamb's personal history through materiality and harmony. 'Primal Image' was the first composition Alan Lamb completed. Recorded on the Faraway Wind Organ, a long stretch of abandoned telephone line located on his family's farm close by the Fitzgerald National Park in Western Australia, this piece resolved an interest in the sonification of wires which had started many decades before. Lamb recounts pressing his ears to a telephone pole as a child, encouraged by his nanny to 'hear the sound the world made.' 'Primal Image' is a work of intense dynamism, a climatic sonic environment within which a complexity of harmony, timbre and texture intermingle, inviting us to lean in. Similarly, 'Beauty' maintains this offer of harmonic complexity. Recorded across some 20 hours, the piece is a condensation of vibration, a folding of time and listenership that speaks both to Lamb's passion for his instrument and the instrument itself as a source of unbounded, and evolving sonics. Lamb's music is one of both attentiveness and patience. It is a music that comes forth from the world, but is simultaneously hidden from most of us. It is a music of the moment, but also one of recurrence as vibrations travel along the material that is the metal wires. It is also a music which, by its very nature, is eternally in the present. Alan Lamb, as a conduit to this material music invites us to share his listening in these moments. He asks us to cast our ears outward into the world and in doing so unlock an interiority of the mind which remains forever compelling and more so fascinating."

CHARLES BOBUCK - God O: Music For A Gallery Opening (Deluxe Edition)(Klanggalerie GG 480CD; Austria) "The Residents are an American art collective best known for their over 60 studio albums that were recorded over a period of over forty years. They also created some outstanding multimedia works, mainly three CD ROM projects and more than ten DVDs. Charles Bock was a pseudonym that Hardy Fox, co-founder and primary composer for the group, used from 2012 to 2017. About a dozen albums were released using that name until Fox started using his real name for his solo recordings. GOD O was the opening music for a Homer Flynn art exhibition in Oakland, CA (April-June 2011). This track was originally released in March 2012 as a download MP3 file only and later as a small run CD by The Cryptic Corporation. In addition, three reworked tracks were released as download only. Klanggalerie are now collecting these songs together with a previously unreleased track named 'GDC' that is half an hour long and was most likely created by Hardy in 2017. In addition, the label offers the download versions of the bonus tracks that are slightly differently mixed to the CD versions. This double CD has been carefully remastered and uses previously unseen artwork created by Hardy Fox."
2 CD Set $24
YUTAKA HIROSE - Voices (WRWTFWW Records 092CD; Switzerland) WRWTFWW Records presents its third release from visionary Japanese ambient/experimental/environmental composer/producer Yutaka Hirose, this time with brand new album Voices, available on limited edition heavyweight-sleeved double LP as well as double CD, both with liner notes from the artist. Voices finds Yutaka Hirose expanding his signature spatial layering into a three-dimensional videography of sound, blending field recordings, electronic manipulations, and abstract narratives. The 12-track album is a journey through a crumbling library where books whisper, history collides, and sonic textures weave new realities. Chaos, memory, and transformation -- Hirose's voices echo throughout the space, creating a fully immersive sonic experience. The pioneering experimental and abstract electronic piece with deep hints of ambient and IDM is beautifully represented by the original artwork by Koji Shiroshita and Mifuku gracing the double LP and double digipack CD sleeves. Voices marks Yutaka Hirose's third full-length release on WRWTFWW Records, following his kankyõ ongaku classics Nova 4 (an expanded version of his genre defining Soundscape 2: Nova album) and archival compilation.
2 CD Set $24
KROKODIL - Getting Up For The Morning & Sweat And Swim (Made in Germany MIG 3452; Germany) "Founded in 1969 by Düde Dürst, Hardy Hepp, Walty Anselmo, Terry Stevens, and Mojo Weideli, Swiss rock band Krokodil was not only one of the first of its kind, but also influenced numerous subsequent Swiss rock bands with its unique, progressive, and psychedelic-tinged musical style. 'We didn't want to emulate our Anglo-American idols, but play our own music right from the start,' recalls drummer Düde Dürst. 'Everything was possible for us, there were no limits.' After three albums for the international record company Liberty/United Artists, Krokodil changed labels in 1972. On Getting Up For The Morning, they worked with producer Peter Hauke (Nektar and Omega, among others) for the first time. The LP was recorded in Dieter Dierks' studio in Stommeln, Germany. Like its successor Sweat And Swim, the album was released on the Bacillus label of Frankfurt's Bellaphon. Then it was over. After six intense years, the band split up. Düde Dürst said: 'I think we were in top form at that time -- musically and compositionally. And we had turned more towards rhythm & blues again.'"
2 CD Set $20
GREGORY ISAACS - Night Nurse: Deluxe Edition (VP Records 1586CD; USA) "A classic release from one of Jamaica's greats, Night Nurse shows the Cool Ruler at his best --performing melodic, chilled reggae such as the title track and 'Hot Stepper.' The title track was a hit for Simply Red when they covered it in 1997. The Roots Radics provide excellent backing for Isaacs' smooth vocals. Perhaps a bit too mellow for fans of more militant reggae such as that purveyed by the Revolutionaries, time has nevertheless proved this to be a classic reggae album. With Dub version extra tracks."

RESTOCKED:
NUCLEUS & IAN CARR with CHRIS SPEDDING / KARL JENKINS / ALAN HOLDSWORTH / BRIAN SMITH / HARRY BECKETT / KENNY WHEELER / TONY COE / DAVE MacRAE / JEFF CLYNE / JOHN MARSHALL / TREVOR TOMKINS / et al - Torrid Zone - The Vertigo Recordings - 1970 - 1975 (Esoteric Recordings 62663; UK) This long awaited boxset includes the first nine albums from the Ian Carr's Nucleus, one the greatest of all British jazz/rock (pre-fusion) outfits. Members included Chris Spedding, Alan Holdsworth, Karl Jenkins, Brian Smith, Jeff Clyne, John Marshall, Dave MacRae, Ron Mathewson, Clive Thacker¦ There are currently no Nucleus CD's in print and in my opinion, they never made a less than great album. Along with Soft Machine, If, Isotope and the Jeff Beck Group and Hatfield & the North/National Health, this was the best of British Jazz/Rock in the 70's. When Ian Carr (also an excellent author of several books) passed away a few years ago, it was the end of an important era. The albums featured here include: 'Elastic Rock' (1970), 'We'll Talk About it Later' (1971), 'Solarplexus' (1971), 'Belladonna' (1972), 'Labyrinth' (1973), 'Roots' (1973), 'Under the Sun' (1974), 'Snakehips Etcetera' (1975) and 'Alley Cat' (1975). An essential release for jazz/rock/fusion fans worldwide. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

THIS NOTE COMES FROM MY GOOD BUDDY JOEL HARRISON, Gifted Guitarist and Organizer. His yearly concerts at LPR have been a highlight for myself and other Guitar Freaks…
Dear Guitar Enthusiasts … There's a lot going:
—MIDWESTERNERS: please take note of the below dates. I'm lucky to be playing with two of the greatest B-3 organ players alive, and fantastic drummers as well. https://joelharrison.com/shows/
—On March 14 AGS (Alternative Guitar Summit) recordings releases ANUPAM SHOBHAKAR'S LIQUID REALITY, a tour de force on double neck guitar that fuses Indian music, jazz, and rock. If you like John McLaughlin this is for you. Preorder here: https://agsrecordings.bandcamp.com/
—We have uploaded some GREAT NEW PODCASTS to the AGS youtube channel with Ben Monder, Redd Volkaert, and more to come. Please check it out.

—For a couple of years I have been working on a major piece entitled "Burn Pit." The orchestration is jazz big band and a 16 person chorus. The subject matter is the deadly toxic burnpits from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan that killed or sickened hundreds of thousands of military personnel. To fulfill my obligation to the NY State Council on the Arts and the Governors Office of NY, from whom I received a generous composition grant, I have posted a video discussing and playing excerpts from this work here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ulyk1Pgrym8

From CHRIS CUTLER:
Formerly of HENRY COW, THE ART BEARS, NEWS FOR BABEL & RECOMMENDED RECORDS (ReR) has been creating an ongoing series of podcasts called the Probes series. I am often fascinated at listening to each of these as Mr. Cutler does an incredible job of showing a deep history of Creative Music in the 20th century & beyond. I usually listen to these on the train to NYC that I take to get to work each day. The most recent Probes (#37) was released earlier this year, here are the links:
