RODRIGO AMADO MOTION TRIO With MIGUEL MIRA/GABRIEL FERRANDINI - Desire & Freedom (Not Two 946; Poland)“Rodrigo Amado's Motion Trio is the model of free jazz genuineness and efficiency, and by that I mean proficiency. They give off an impression of nonchalance here, but don't let their relaxed approach fool you, beneath the surface their music is burning with all the agitation of the 1960's New Thing in jazz.
After a wave a recordings with guests that included trumpeter Peter Evans on The Freedom Principle (NoBusiness, 2014) and Live In Lisbon (NoBusiness, 2014) and trombonist Jeb Bishop The Flame Alphabet (Not Two, 2013) and Burning Live At Jazz Ao Centro (JACC, 2012), the trio of tenor saxophonist Amado, cellist Miguel Mira and drummer Gabriel Ferrandini returned to the studio to make music as a core unit. This had not been done since their self-titled debut in 2009.
It is as if they had returned from the wars, and their homecoming here was a celebration. Amado has worked and recorded with Joe McPhee, Taylor Ho Bynum, Paal Nilssen-Love, Chris Corsano, Luís Lopes, and Gerald Cleaver, to name just a few. Mira performs with the Variable Geometry Orchestra and Iridium String Quartet, and Ferrandini with RED Trio and Lisbon Connection.
That is not the full truth, this trio is a day-to-day working/practicing unit. That is quite apparent in each of these three lengthy tracks.
"Liberty" opens with a tentative exploration between Mira and Ferrandini. The pair explore the rattle-tic shadows of an otherwise twosome. Amado enters cautiously and deliberately, as if to gauge the atmosphere. The adventure occurs, but the journey here rarely draws on conflict as the driver of improvisation. Amado's saxophone is busy on "Freedom Is A Two-Edged Sword," like that of Evan Parker, but with a fuller sound. He never neglects the bottom. The piece doesn't charge full steam ahead until the finale, then it comes as a rush.
The lengthiest track, "Responsibility," at twenty-plus minutes, is the signature piece here. Mira's nimble cello work and the busy clack and chatter of Ferrandini's kit provide a platform for Amado to summon the same meditative muse as John Coltrane often drew from in his introspective pieces. The music, or should we say prayer, builds momentum with the trio's realization of a unified sound. The journey is steep with many switchbacks, but our guides are experts and the passage is secure. MIKOLAJ TRZASKA - Delta Tree (Kilogram 032; Poland) As far as I can tell, this is a solo project from Polish reds wiz (alto sax & clarinets) Mikolaj Trzaska. I am a big fan of Mr. Trzaska, after hearing his work with Joe McPhee, Johannes Bauer, Peter Brotzmann and Ken Vandermark (Reeds Trio & Resonance Ensemble). His two ensemble discs on Kilogram are both superb and well worth searching for. - BLG

PAUL DUNMALL QUINTET With PERCY PURSGLOVE / STEVE TROMANS / DAVE KANE / HAMID DRAKE - The Dreamtime Suite (FMR 428; UK) Featuring Paul Dunmall on tenor & alto saxes & bagpipes, Percy Pursglove on trumpet & bagpipes, Steve Tromans on piano, Dave Kane on acoustic bass and Hamid Drake on drums. This disc was recorded live at Lantern Room in Bristol, UK in October of 2016. With the Duns Limited label now gone, Paul Dunmall, has been taking his time to organize one session at a time with different personnel. Three members of this fine quintet have worked with Mr. Dunmall on several previous discs* trumpeter Pursglove (on Dunmall’s recent Brass Project), bassist Dave Kane (from the Matthew Bourne Trio & several Dunmall CDs) and of course the great Hamid Drake on drums who also has worked with Mr. Dunmall on a couple of previous discs. The only new name here for me is pianist Steve Tromans who has worked with John Mayer (co-leader of Indo-Jazz Fusions with Joe Harriott).
This disc starts oft with what sounds like an older, hard swinging theme. Both Mr. Dunmall’s tenor and Pursglove’s trumpet are in fine form, burning together backed by a rambunctious rhythm team. The secret weapon here is the mighty Hamid Drake who provides a powerful rhythmic undertow, organic and swigging hard simultaneously. Pianist Steve Tromans locks in with Hamid and bassist Kane, revving the quintet up as they ride in waves towards the horizon. The interplay between the sax, trumpet and piano is extraordinary, tight and robust and on the verge of flying apart but never losing the inner pulse which holds this all together. All members of the quintet get a chance to stretch out and direct or navigate the flow. There are a few solos from pianist Steve Tromans which are pretty amazing, showing that he is a strong force to be reckoned with. Trumpeter Percy Pursglove, who has worked with Dunmall on a handful of previous discs is also a great choice since he is able to keep up with sax colossus Dunmall, when he starts blasting out those Trane-like lines (sheets of sound) on tenor. Another highlight here is midway which features a frame drum and (two?) bagpipes duo or trio. It doesn’t last very long but the bagpipes do have a spiritual drone which fits just right. ALVIN FIELDER / FRODE GJERSTAD / DAMON SMITH - The Shape Finds Its Own Space (FMR 429; UK) Featuring Alvin Fielder on drums, Frode Gjerstad on alto sax & clarinet and Damon Smith on double bass. Original AACM drummer, Alvin Fielder, can be heard on some essential recordings by Roscoe Mitchell a half century ago. Mr. Fielder moved back to Mississippi in 1969, which is where he has been based ever since, teaching, playing and being closely involved in the southern avant/jazz scene. After working & recording with Ahmed Abdullah, Charles Brackeen & Dennis Gonzalez, Fielder has had an ongoing collaboration with Kidd Jordan and Joel Futterman. More recently, Fielder has been recording with bassist Damon Smith in a duo and now a trio with Norwegian reedman Frode Gjerstad. Mr. Fielder is a scholar of jazz drumming so check out interviews with him to learn about what is special about many jazz drummers throughout jazz history. Mr Gjerstad is an respected elder who has been playing and recording for nearly forty years. Gjerstad has worked with a steady stream of great rhythm section players: John Stevens & Johnny Dyani, William Parker & Hamid Drake and Paal Nilsson-Love & Jon Rune Strom, to name just a few.
This set was recorded live in Austin, Texas in February of 2016. This music is extraordinary, free spirited and intense! This trio moves organically, always focused as one force of nature. There is a long, story like drum solo in the first section of this near 44 minute set. Mr. Gjerstad is also pretty feisty on clarinet, bending and twisting his notes inside out - this is some of the most explosive clarinet playing I’ve heard, similar to the way Peter Brotzmann wails on his tarogato (an eastern European over-sized clarinet). The set is well-recorded and balanced just right, unfolding in a natural way through valleys and up to the mountains of madness and back again. The free spirits of delight! - BLG/DMG
ONNO GOVAERT / MARCELO dos REIS / LUIS VICENTE / KRISTJAN MARTINSSON - In Layers (FMR 427; UK) Featuring Marcelo dos Reis on acoustic guitar, Luis Vicente on trumpet, Kristjan Martinsson on piano and Onno Govaert on drums. This quartet improv session was recorded in Amsterdam, although some of the members come from other European countries. Drummer Onno Govaert is from the Netherlands since he is a member of the Amsterdam-based Cactus Truck trio. Guitarist Marcos dos Reis is from Lisbon and is a member of a fine trio called Open Field. Trumpeter Luis Vicente is also from Portugal and had recorded with Clocks and Clouds (FMR) and Deux Maisons (Clean Feed). The drummer, Kristjan Martinsson is the only unfamiliar name here. The music here is extremely cautious and well-crafted, with notes stretched out in a most hypnotic, careful way. This is an all acoustic session, sublimely recorded. Trumpeter Luis Vicente sounds like Nate Wooley and is constantly changing his sound/approach. Both the piano and acoustic guitar weave various lines together while the piano and drums also do their own interaction in focused waves. Eventually the spirits and intensity builds to some powerful conclusions, all four members criss-crossing their lines in focused spirals. And then suddenly it stops. Some of the quieter moments here are rich in detail and subtly. On a piece called “Varnish”, the mood is quiet, restrained and magical like a dream slowly unfolding. Certain lines are shared by the members, the piano begins one and then the acoustic guitar finishes it. The trumpet and drums also are connected to a similar flow, speeding up, slowly down and moving together as one strong spirit. At one point the trumpet and piano erupt together in furious spirals, tight and mind-blowing at times. In a blindfold test, one might guess Nate Wooley, Sylvie Courvoisier, Chris Corsano and I am not sure who to say on guitar. A great dose of strong sonic medicine, acoustic and unadorned with no devices. - Bruce Lee gallanter, DMG
FRANCOIS CARRIER / MICHEL LAMBERT / ALEXEY LAPIN - Freedom is Space for the Spirit (FMR 425; UK) Featuring Francois Carrier on alto sax & Chinese oboe, Alexey Lapin on piano and Michel Lampert on drums. Recorded in St. Petersburg in May of 2014. The Quebec-based duo of Francois Carrier and Michel Lambert have some two dozen releases as a duo, trio or quartet and have worked with Steve Beresford, Mat Maneri and Paul Bley. This appears to be their fifth disc with Russian pianist Alexey Lapin. Mr. Lapin is a Russian pianist who has has more than a dozen discs on the Leo label . I caught the Carrier/Lapin Duo at the Victo Festival a few years back was impressed by the ever-evolving creativity. The instrumentation here is similar to the another Russian avant/jazz trio - the Ganelin Trio, a legendary outfit who were one of the first free/jazz units to emerge from Russia, long before the fall of the Iron Curtain (formed in 1968, first recording 1976). This trio does sound like they have been together for a long while, laying back when necessary. After an intense, sped up first section, the trio finally calm down for some warm, laid back, free-flowing, spirit. This cross-cultural trio have established their own sound, rarely going too far out, occasionally dipping into some lyrical passages… There is some truly lovely, spiritual sounding music here that feels just right. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG
P.O.P. [PSYCHOLOGY OF PERCEPTION] With REINHOLD FRIEDLI / HANNES STROBL / ELENA KAKALIAGOU / NORA KRAHL - Ikebana (FMR 432; UK)[Psychology of Perception] features Reinhold Friedl on piano, Hannes Strobl on electric bass, Elena Kakaliagou on French Horn & voice and Nora Krahl on cello. This disc by P.O.P. was recorded in Berlin in 2016. We know pianist Reinhold Friedl from his work with the Zeitkratzer ensemble (a dozen or so discs performing Stockhausen, John Cage, James Tenney and Lou Reed, as well as collaborating with Elliott Sharp. Bassist Hannes Stobl has recorded with David Moss for a couple of discs. The two women here, Elena and Nora, i wasn’t familiar with as of yet. Each of the eight pieces are named after a different floral arrangements. Each floral arrangement is pictured and described in a short paragraph. The music, which opens with “Shoka”, has that drone-like, slow moving, Deep Listening, sort of vibe. Filled with suspense and other eerie sounds, time seems to be stretched out, slowed down to a more glacial level. It sounds like a bunch of sleeping ghosts breathing and grumbling slowly together… “Nageira” sounds as if there were a bunch angry insects, all buzzing together at different frequencies. Are we under the ocean? Is the gravity shifting somewhere else as we listen or submerge? Enchanting? Disturbing? Either or both? Disorienting at the very least. Too much or just enough? Hmmmmmmmm. - BLG/DMG
RULEMARES With RAMIRO MOLINA / LUIS CONDE / NICOLAS RIOS - Atractor Extrano (FMR 424; UK) Rulemares is Ramiro Molina on electric guitar, Luis Conde on alto sax and Nicolas Rios on drums. This studio session was recorded at the University of La Serena in Chile in November of 2015. We’ve seen a number of free/music improvisers emerging from various pockets in South & Central America from countries: Brazil, Argentina, Mexico and now Chile. Two members of this trio, Molina & Conde, have both recorded with Frode Gjerstad, the great Norwegian saxist, also for the FMR label. The music is often powerful, focused and occasionally intense. It doesn’t appear to be completely improvised as certain sections sound partially written. The liner notes claim that there is no score involved but that is not how it sounds as there are a number of tight parts, focused interactions that only emerge when musicians have been working together for a long while. What makes this trio special is the way they set things up: often the guitar & drums or sax & drums play their tight, bent lines together while the other instrument solos or interacts in intricate ways. Each piece seems to have some sort of plan or sketch involved keeping things balanced just right. The tempo and/or vibe is usually moderate and in no hurray, making it all the more thoughtful. Spirited music that rarely hits you over the head and never screams. A modest treat from an under-documented scene. Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG
BERND REINCKE / JOHN HUGHES / CHAD POPPLE - Play ‘The Trio’ (FMR 431; UK) Featuring Bernd Reincke on baritone & soprano sax & bass clarinet, John Hughes on bass and Chad Popple on drums. The Trio were the legendary John Surman Trio with Barre Phillips on contrabass and Stu Martin on drums. The Trio made one double album in 1970, which remains one the greatest British avant/jazz albums of all time. That same year, Soft Machine ’Third’ and Keith Tippett Group - ‘Dedicated to You, But You Weren’t Listening’ also were released and all three are essential and influential. I bought The Trio’s double self-titled album in December of 1975 when I was going to school in London and it changed my life, the way some records can. When I saw this was a tribute to the John Surman Trio, with the same instrumentation, I wondered if they could pull off the large challenge. I knew little about their saxist before this disc arrived. Bassist, John Hughes, has recorded with domestic (once NY-based & now in PA) drummer Jeff Arnal and Europeans Dietrich Eichmann and Lars Scherzberg. It turns out that drummer, Chad Popple is from Wisconsin and has played with a the bands: Colossamite and Gorge Trio. This trio actually play seven songs from the original album as well as a couple of originals in a similar vein.
Starting with Surman’s “Flyover”, this trio takes things at a more relaxed pace, still keeping the inner flame to a slow burn. “Bat” is one of the three original pieces and it does sound like something The Trio would improvise… rustling bowed and plucked bass, reflective bari sax and somber drums. One of the best things about the original Trio was the distinctive bowed bass work of Barre Phillips. The bassist here, John Hughes, does a great job of capturing that spirit and sound throughout. One of my favorite songs from the original LP, “Oh Dear” is taken at a slower pace, and still sounds strong, more brooding, less explosive. This trio often takes their time, before they erupt into the more rambunctious episodes like the original. Although not as exuberant as the original Trio, this trio is still and spirited and convincing without copying The Trio too closely. No small feat, I can assure you. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

AMALGAM [TREVOR WATTS/STEVE HAYTON/PETE COWLING/LIAM GENOCKEY] - Another Time (FMR 116; UK) First time outing on CD for this classic Amalgam recording originally released on Berlin's Vinyl Records in 1976. Trevor Watts heads a highly experienced line up which includes Steve Hayton on guitar, the bass guitar of Pete Cowling and the confident drumming of Liam Genockey and features six mostly Watts composed original quartet pieces.
AMALGAM [TREVOR WATTS/JOHN STEVENS/JEFF CLYNE/BARRY GUY] - Prayer for Peace (FMR 96; UK) Outstanding early studio session from May of 1969 from an all-star SME offshoot trio featuring Trevor Watts on alto sax, John Stevens on drums, Jeff Clyne and Barry Guy (title piece only) on contrabasses. This is an aptly titled work - immensely spiritual, free flowing and sublimely cosmic. Trevor Watts has said of the title track, 'The mood of Prayer for Peace' is a very strong part of my musical personality The theme came to me during an improvisation. Afterwards I rememberedit because the feeling was so beautiful for me I wanted to recreate it, and give the feeling of peace and beauty to others'.The FMR label is becoming more difficult to get and keep in stock, so grab this soon if it tickles your fancy.
AMALGAM [TREVOR WATTS/DAVE COLE/HARRY MILLER/LIAM GENOCKEY] - Deep (FMR 127; UK) Pretty f**king incredible! Featuring Trevor Watts on alto sax, Dave Cole on electric guitar, Harry Miller on contrabass and Liam Genockey on drums. Recorded on November 17th of 1977 at Riverside Studio and without a doubt on the most astonishing dates we've heard in quite a while.
MIKKO INNANEN / SIMO LAIHONEN - April Fools (Eclipse Music 201642; Finland) Featuring Mikko Innanen on alto, baritone & sopranino saxes & other winds and Simo Laihonen on drums & percussion. Finnish saxist Mikko Innanen has more than a dozen discs as a leader or collaborator (with Kalle Kalima & Delerium) and has played here at DMG on several occasions. His most recognized discs are on the TUM label. His solo sax set here last Sunday (Jan 15, 2017) with Sam Newsome, solos & duo, was truly great! Mr. Innanen always leaves us with a CDs or LPs to check out whenever he is here. He just left with another fine duo, he and drummer Simo Laihonen. Mr. Laihonen is a member of a band called Black Motor, who seem to have a half dozen discs out. This is a studio session and the sound is superb, warm and well-balanced. Spacious at times, a warm, thoughtful dialogue at other times. Mr. Innanen started his solo set he announcing he was going to do a song by the “real president”, meaning Lester Young, a/k/a The Prez. Mikko sounds as if he knows his jazz history, balancing the strands of Ornette Coleman with more swinging episodes. I dig when Innanen switches to sopranino on “On the Volga”, spinning out a stream of notes at a fast pace, some bent just right to connect with us. This duo sounds as if they are no hurry, taking their time to lay back and stretch out. The duo create their own organic magic here, spinning tales and having some fascinating dialogue going on throughout. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

MIKKO INNANNEN - 10 (Grotto 003; Finland) This is Finnish saxist Mikko Innanen’s large ensemble with some twelve members. I recognize a few of the names from various discs on the TUM label: Mika Kallio (drums), Verneri Pohjola (trumpet) and Seppo Kantonen (piano). Mr. Innannen wrote all four pieces and this was recorded live at Moers Festival in Germany in May of 2015. This is tight, feisty, spirited little big band, swinging hard yet free with several horns soloing often at the same time as well as one right after the other. This wonderful ensemble often sounds as if they are about to soar out of control, but keep a center to the storm swirling around them. With three saxes, two trumpets, two trombones, two basses, two drums and piano, it is hard to tell who is soloing but whoever it is, is erupting in powerful cascades. The intensity here is at the top of the scale, reminding me of Keith Tippett’s Centipede (a fifty piece free orchestra from 1971). Just incredible is all one can say to this massive treasure from Finland’s finest! - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

MIKKO INNANNEN / WILLIAM PARKER / ANDREW CYRILLE - Song for a New Decade [2 CD Set](TUM 042; Finland) 'Song for a New Decade' features Finnish saxophonist Mikko Innanen, one of the most compelling new voices in European improvised music, with two legends of the music, bassist William Parker, who rose to prominence during New York's loft jazz era of the 1970s, and drummer Andrew Cyrille, who is one of the elders of improvised music going back to the early 1960s. The first CD comprises a studio recording of Mikko Innanen's compositions and a spontaneous improvisation by the Innanen, Parker & Cyrille trio whereas the second CD consists of a six-part live improvisation by Innanen and Cyrille at IBEAM in Brooklyn. Both sessions were recorded in New York City.

Swedish saxist Fredrik Nordstrom has been around the block and recorded more than a half dozen discs for the Moserobie & Clean Feed labels. Mr. Nordstrom rarely comes to our town and playing gigs here are even rarer still. Nordstrom did come visit us recently and left us with his new CD. His quartet features Jonas Ostholm on piano, Torbjorn Zetterberg on bass (who can be found on a half dozen discs on Clean Feed) and the ever in-demand New York drummer, Gerald Cleaver. Mr. Nordstrom has a strong, warm, thoughtful, mature tone on tenor. Each disc of this two disc set has a title. ‘Gentle Fire’ is an apt title as that is what this quartet embodies, balancing lyricism with strong spirited playing. Local drum legend, Gerald Cleaver, is often the magic ingredient here, keeping the flow elegant and propulsive. This is an incredible quartet, often playing together as one flexible unit. In a way, this double disc reminds of me of a Dexter Gordon Quartet recording from the seventies with an incredible rhythm section to back this gentle giant. KARL BERGER / KIRK KNUFFKE - Moon (No Business 76-77; Lithuania) Featuring Karl Berger on vibes & piano and Kirk Knuffke on cornet. "Karl and I met when we shared the bill for an "Arts for Art" night of music dedicated to Ed Blackwell. Karl was a longtime associate of Ed's. There were two duets featured that night. Karl played duo with the great William Parker and I was invited by drummer Gerald Cleaver to play duets from the record "El Corazon" and other tunes in tribute to Ed Blackwell and Don Cherry. Karl of course played a tone with Don too! After this meeting Karl and I became fast friends. Karl invited me to teach with him at the Creative Music Studio in Woodstock, NY, and now I have 2 times. It was there that we played duo for the nightly Guiding Artist concert and the concept of this album was born. Playing with Karl is so free and natural. KEIJI HAINO / JOZEF DUMOULIN / TEUN VERBRUGGEN - The Miracles Of Only One Thing (Sub Rosa 439; Belgium) Japanese legend, Keiji Haino, meets two of Belgium's most active and valued musicians, keyboardist Jozef Dumoulin (Lilly Joel) and drummer Teun Verbruggen (Othin Spake). The Miracles Of Only One Thing is a deep and intense testimony of this meeting. Keiji Haino, without any doubt one of the most important musicians from the Japanese underground scene, is at his best, Teun Verbruggen and Jozef Dumoulin did a three-week tour in Japan in September of 2015, playing concerts as a duet, but also solo and with local musicians. One of those musicians was hero Keiji Haino, whose work has spanned rock, free improvisation, noise, percussion, psychedelic music, minimalism and drones. Besides his legendary bands Fushitsusha and Lost Aaraaff, he has worked with artists and bands like Boris, The Melvins, Jim O'Rourke, Oren Ambarchi, Peter Brötzmann and Steve Noble. As for Dumoulin and Verbruggen, they are both known for their always refreshing and groundbreaking work that breaks the barriers between free improvisation, electro, jazz and more. Jozef Dumoulin is part of the duo Lilly Joel appearing recently on Sub Rosa with What Lies in the Sea (SR 416CD, 2015). The three teamed up for a studio recording and a recorded live-show. Out of all the material, they distilled an album that reflects both the excitement of the new bond as well as the deep and vast sonic landscapes that their joined forces laid bare. K. LEIMER - Permissions (palace of Lights POL 004-2010; USA) Permissions is somewhat of a collaboration with Taylor Deupree, given that the 12k head is credited with 'additional voices, post-production, edit, mix, and mastering.' The detail isn't insignificant, either, as Permissions largely collapses whatever stylistic differences might normally separate 12k and Palace of Lights recordings. Arranged into concise song-like structures, the material exemplifies the concentration on fluttering micro-sound textures, electro-acoustic sounds, and field recordings that's shared by the two creators and often captured on a typical 12k release. Listed sans titles on the CD cover as simply 'Permissions 01-16,' the settings function like snapshots that cumulatively provide an in-depth portrait of Leimer's range. The mood is generally laid-back, meditative, and explorative, but the elements drawn upon are not only pastoral in nature as industrial sounds surface, too."
MARC BARRECA - Beneath The Mirrored Surface (Palace of Lights POL 004-2015; USA) The impulse to invent and realize new music, new forms and a broader comprehension of sound has proven to be a permanent aspect of Marc Barreca's work. From childhood music lessons, to tape and electronic experimentation with his group Young Scientist, to becoming an early participant in cassette culture and the independent movement, Marc has developed a large body of work that moves with and ahead of the changes that music has undergone in the past four decades. With Beneath The Mirrored Surface, Marc continues his quest to create deep and shifting aural spaces by merging the abstract rhythmic warmth of early analog synthesis with the complexity and timbral beauty of acoustic instruments and natural sound. Barreca extracted and reshaped rhythms and textures from field recordings, decades-old world folk recordings and acoustic instrument loops. These sources were first converted into MIDI data using Ableton Live and then transformed and manipulated with Max/MSP. Hundreds of these source clips were then blended and arranged with layered and looped digital synthesizer and sampler tracks. The result is a dense, rich world of refracted light and shifting shadow. Mastered by Taylor Deupree."
WELLS FARGO - Watch Out (Now-Again 5138; USA) "Rock music and revolution in '70s Zimbabwe. Just as the hippie era came to an end in America, a second '60s was beginning. In what is now Zimbabwe, young people created a rock and roll counterculture that drew inspiration from hippie ideals and the sounds of Hendrix and Deep Purple. The kids in the scene called their music 'heavy,' because they could feel its impact, and it resonated from Zambia to Nigeria. At its peak in the mid-70s, the heavy rock scene united tens of thousands of young progressives of all racial and social backgrounds. The country was called Rhodesia then, one of the last bastions of white rule in Africa, and heavy rockers defied segregation laws and secret police to make a stand for democratic change. Wells Fargo was at the forefront of the scene, and the title track of this album, 'Watch Out,' was the anthem of the counterculture. This is the first time their music has been issued outside of Zimbabwe. Matthew Shechmeister tells the story of Wells Fargo drawing on interviews with the band's remaining members and numerous trips to Zimbabwe to investigate the genesis of the heavy rock scene under Ian Smith's oppressive government, and its dissipation after Zimbabwe's liberation. CD comes packaged in a 72 page hardcover book detailing the the history of Zimbabwe's heavy rock scene and the trajectory of Wells Fargo. Never before seen photographs and ephemera color a story so hard to believe that it has to be true. The book is printed on acid-free paper."
RICHARD PINHAS - Reverse (Bureau B 249; Germany) LP version, includes CD. Richard Pinhas, leader of French space-rock pioneers Heldon in the '70s, has been prolific since returning to the form in the '90s. He has collaborate with Merzbow, Yoshida Tatsuya, Oren Ambarchi, Barry Cleveland, and Wolf Eyes. "Changes in my life really influenced this record," Richard Pinhas tells of his new album Reverse. "The wife of a friend of mine offered to read my Tarot cards... I don't believe in it - I am very materialist, not financially but in my philosophy - so it was very strange that in the year that followed I lost my two parents, broke up with my girlfriend, lost my flat, and moved to Nantes. So the album was done in this confusion, in this chaotic state of having lost all these things." Reverse's dark experimental noise and long repetitive tracks have an intimidating first impression. But listening to the whole 50 minutes leaves one feeling purified. Pinhas even says this album "fixed" and "resurrected" him: "It was a healing process for me to make this album. To get rid of all the negativity that occupied my brain." The main process of the album production was one of construction, with Pinhas and Oren Ambarchi (guitars, "dronz") forming the skeleton. After the initial sessions in Paris, they threw out everything except their own parts and then started searching for "the right parts. Not a drummer, but the drummer, not a bass guitarist, but the bass guitarist." He enlisted the talents of Arthur Narcy (drums), Florian Tatar (bass) along with Masami Akita (analog synths), his son Duncan Nilson-Pinhas (digital synths), and William Winant (percussion). Reverse reflects Pinhas's keen interest in Kabbalah. "Ketter" is an unknowable realm and the music reflects this. We catch traces of elements traversing the spectrum while the whole retains its own mystery. Pinhas's immediately recognizable tone is tempered by Narcy's unique drumming style. "End" reflects the "reverse" of the album title, as sounds double back in on themselves whilst Narcy, frantic on the cymbals, pounds the drums themselves with military precision. "Nefesh" is the first level of the soul, the track's percolating sounds depicting such a pneumatic birth. "V2" brings to mind both Thomas Pynchon's Gravity's Rainbow (1973) and David Bowie. It sounds like the aftermath of an enormous futuristic electrical malfunction still lingering over a vast cityscape. Cover art by Yann LeGendre.

LOL COXHILL - Ear Of Beholder (Radiation Deluxe Series 7007; Spain) Radiation Deluxe Series present a reissue of Lol Coxhill's Ear Of Beholder, originally released in 1971. Ear Of Beholder is one of the most beguiling and adventurous records of the 1970s, which is saying a lot as that is a musical decade marked by groundbreaking creativity. Originally released on John Peel's Dandelion label, Lol Coxhill's sprawling double album debut is an avant-garde jazz masterstroke that features Robert Wyatt and much of the Whole World group, Kevin Ayers's backing band at the time (of which Lol was a member). Ranging from straight-up feedback to re-workings of standards, outdoor recordings to spoken word, improvisation to vaudeville, Ear Of Beholder covers more ground in two LPs than most artists do in a lifetime. SIR RICHARD BISHOP - Salvador Kali (Exiled 006; USA) "Exiled Records is very excited to present the first ever vinyl edition of Sir Richard Bishop's Salvador Kali. Originally released on cd by John Fahey's Revenant in 1998. This was released following a run of peak Sun City Girls activity (330,003 Crossdressers, Dante's Disneyland Inferno) and came as something of a shock; a stunningly beautiful instrumental album that was entirely accessible! Composed and recorded free of the burden of expectation, his debut album marked Bishop as a force operating on his own plane. A fairly significant departure from the freewheeling nature of the Sun City Girls, Salvador Kali is a concise album in which he explores the hallmarks of his style: North African influences, Spanish flamenco, Indian raga and a fiery take on Django Reinhardt's Rose Room. The epic 14 minute solo piano fantasia, Al-Darazi is saved for all of side C. There is an incredible cinematic feel to the album as it's vibe runs from pieces that could be in a Satyajit Ray film to a lost Antonioni sequence set on the Mediterranean in the 1970's. Ironic that it was released by John Fahey, as it is was one of the few solo guitar albums to be free of the long shadow cast by Fahey. My favorite Sir Richard Bishop album on vinyl, at last! BETTY DAVIS - This Is It! (Vampisoul 055; Spain) @ LP version. The former wife of Miles, Betty Mabry Davis is perhaps the only woman in the world who could rightfully have the following legend tattooed across her rear: THIS ASS INVENTED FUSION. While their marriage only lasted a year (1968-1969), Betty pointed the way to Miles, introducing him to the musical and material gods of revolutionary style: Jimi Hendrix and Sly Stone, which would have an enormous impact on his electrified musical Frankenfusion masterpiece known as Bitches Brew. Betty ruled as the mentor-muse for the original man and his music. She was a woman with the strength of a Black Panther, a "nasty" woman in total control, but unfortunately for Betty, America was not yet ready to embrace a woman with such an explicitly sexual persona. She had a much rougher edge to her music than other female funk and soul artists of the '70s. Betty Davis' is one of the most extreme sounding debut records of the decade, which just like Bitches Brew takes equal parts inspiration from Hendrix and Sly. One critic aptly described their sound as something like a cross between Tina Turner, Funkadelic, and Sly & The Family Stone. Add the futurist fashion sense of David Bowie, and the flair of Miles Davis, and you have quite a cocktail. This is the best of Betty Davis' three much-sought albums.

DEMON FUZZ - Afreaka! (Granadilla Music 211; Germany) Granadilla Music present a reissue of Demon Fuzz's Afreaka!, originally released in 1970. Demon Fuzz were an English band but originated from quite a few former Commonwealth countries which have African roots. Back in 1968, before they became Demon Fuzz, the musicians started as a typical soul music group. But following a trip to Morocco, they opened their minds and broadened their musical vision towards a conglomerate of jazz, African roots music, psychedelic sounds, blues, powerful rock, and tinges of funk and soul music. The multi-ethnic band felt like playing multi-ethnic influenced rock for the club and UK festival audiences. And despite their sensational musical vision and captivating compositions, Demon Fuzz never made it further than a cult band. Anyway, what they deliver here is progressive even for its time and still groovy and hypnotizing enough to fill the dancefloors of the most hip underground clubs. Great saxophone lines (are these melodies created by a sax?) over polyrhythmic groove patterns will drive fans of bands like Soft Machine and Colosseum nuts. There is the mandatory cover version included here, "Another Country", originally played by The Electric Flag. Demon Fuzz get the most psychedelia out of their open jazz saxophone improvisations over a smooth, repetitive rhythm pattern in the long middle section. The essence of soul music, with many extraordinary and exotic elements, makes it one of these ever flourishing youthful anthems of progressive rock and pop from the late '60s, the pioneer days of progressive music. Fans of the jazz and rock amalgam of the Canterbury scene should be excited about Afreaka! THE STAPLE SINGERS - Will The Circle Be Unbroken? (Cornbread Records 16011-LP; USA) Cornbread Records present a reissue of The Staple Singers's Will The Circle Be Unbroken?, originally released in 1960. A truly legendary release, Will The Circle Be Unbroken? was the second album from the immortal Staple Singers. Featuring the Staples's instantly recognizable tremelo guitar, and the vocals of Mavis and company, this album might contain the definitive version of the title track, a gospel standard that dates back to 1907 and has been covered countless time, so that's no short order. This is the group, along with The Soul Stirrers, that influenced an entire generation of future gospel performers, and this LP is one of their absolute peaks. ABBEY LINCOLN - Abbey Is Blue (Cornbread Records 16015-LP; USA) Cornbread Records present a reissue of Abbey Lincoln's Abbey Is Blue, originally released in 1959. Abbey Lincoln was perhaps the most talented in a series of jazz singers to quickly follow in the footsteps of Billie Holiday. She released her debut album in 1957, and followed soon after with a series of hit jazz titles, in addition to singing on Max Roach's landmark protest album, We Insist! Freedom Now Suite, in 1960 (OUT 5001LP). Lincoln was also deeply involved in the civil rights movement, and her songs were often a reflection of that struggle. Abbey Is Blue is perhaps her most well-known solo work. Reissued here on 180 gram vinyl with download code.

LAVERN BAKER - See See Rider (Cornbread Records 16017; USA) Cornbread Records present a reissue of LaVern Baker's See See Rider, originally released in 1962. See See Rider is one of Baker's finest jump blues LPs, a killer collection of stomping tunes including the title track, a classic 12-bar blues originally recorded by Ma Rainey way back in the 1920s. Born in Chicago, LaVern Baker got her start in the vibrant south side blues scene of the post-war era, before moving on to New York City to record for the famed Atlantic Records, the home of the biggest stars in R&B of the time. This collection of singles is one of her finest sets of recordings and absolutely essential pre-soul R&B from one of the masters. THE SOUND OF DURBAN - Vol. 1 (Pantone Cover)(GQOM 002; South Africa) The Sound of Durban Vol. 1 represents the first full-length compilation collecting the sound of the suburbs and townships of Durban, South Africa known as "gqom". The album unites many of the local young producers of this fresh genre over 15 tracks on a double LP. Rome-based DJ and musician Nan Kolè and South Africa-based Lerato Phiri set up the Gqom Oh! label to highlight the music and artists of Durban, the often-overlooked cradle of the new South African sound. Taking its name from an onomatopoeic Zulu word signifying a drum, this extraordinary, apocalyptic bass music encompasses many influences. ANDRE STORDEUR - Analog and Digital Electronic Music #2 1980-2000 (Sub Rosa 427; Belgium) Selected unreleased works by André Stordeur, a key composer of Belgian electronic music, recorded from 1980 to 2000. Perfect complement to Analog and Digital Electronic Music 1978-80 (2015). Released as part of Sub Rosa's Early Electronic series. Belgian electronic music composer André Stordeur, born in 1941, started his musical career started in 1973 with a tape composition for the soundtrack to a film on Gordon Matta-Clark titled Office Baroque (1977). Later in the 1970s, he participated in the avant-garde music ensemble Studio Voor Experimentele Muziek, founded in Antwerp, Flanders, by Joris De Laet. Since 1980, Stordeur has composed exclusively on a Serge synthesizer, either a Serge series 79 and a Serge prototype 1980, which was especially built for him by Serge Tcherepnin himself. In 1981, Stordeur composed the music of Belgian documentary Du Zaïre Au Congo (1981) by director Christian Mesnil. He studied at IRCAM in 1981 with David Wessel and then flew to the US to study with Morton Subotnick. Stordeur became an influential sound synthesis teacher and, in 1997, completed his Art of Analog Modular Synthesis by Voltage Control (2010), a guide to everything modular.
AHMET KENAN BILGIC - Sarmasık (Shalgam Records 006; Turkey) The movie Sarmasik (Turkish for "Ivy") premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2015 and received many festival awards. Presented here are the tracks used in the film, as well as sound collages of sounds made by the characters of the film, composed by Ahmet Kenan Bilgic. Bilgic is a composer, producer and performer, and is also the guitarist and vocalist of the experimental fusion band Gevende from Istanbul. With Gevende, he has released two studio albums, the soundtrack for the video game Monochroma. After composing sound and music for many short movies and animated films, he won the Golden Tulip award at the 30th International Istanbul Film Festival as the composer of the feature film Atlikarinca (2011).

BNMC presents a composer portrait concert showcasing the passion, intellect, and craftsmanship of Steven Burke. The di.vi.sion piano trio will perform Dream Forms, Fusion, In Time's Wake, and Spring Fever. BNMC and di.vi.sion feel strongly that Burke is a brilliant composer who, despite receiving accolades including the Rome Prize, deserves far more widespread attention.
