DMG Newsletter for March 28th, 2025

In tomorrow's realm
We'll take the helm of a new ship
Like the lash of a whip
We'll start on the way
And safely journey
To a new shore

In some far off place
Many light years in space
I'll wait for you

As we get closer to World War III, the war on Democracy and Freedom, I keep thinking about where I can move to when the sh*t hits the fan. Is there a safe place on the planet Earth that has no right wing extremist trying to take over? I feel sad, frustrated and angry that all of the positive lessons that we learned in the sixties (civility, racial relations, manners and gender politics, all known as “woke”) are being erased by those in control more and more each and every day. We are living in an ongoing nightmare which seems to be getting worse all of the time. The posse of evil clowns in the White House cabinet are in the spotlight, but there many dangerous things going in which we can’t see yet which will change things for the worse before we can fix these problems, if indeed we can ever fix them again.

The above song/lyrics are by Sun Ra, intergalactic traveler/philosopher/composer/big-bandleader, who was also a beacon of enlightenment for those who listened closely to his words and music. “I’ll Wait for You” comes from an album called ’Strange Celestial Road’ which remains one of my favorite Ra records of the hundreds that have been released during his reign and since his departure in 1993. Marshall Allen (age 100!) and current Sun Ra Arkestra continue his legacy into new realms with each release and concert. There is something about the chorus, “I’ll Wait For You” that makes me feel hopeful for meeting up with many of those who have been lost to other world of spirits. I look forward to meeting with many of the great spirits who have passed on when I too move to the next world. Peace and Love Always, Bruce Lee Gallanter at DMG

New Releases This Week Begin With The Third Single Bagatelles CD:

JOHN ZORN // TRIGGER with AARON EDGECOMB / SIMON HANES / WILL GREENE - The Bagatelles Vol. 3 - Trigger (Tzadik 5213; USA) From March to May 2015, John Zorn composed 300 new tunes that were eventually collected into a book of music he called The Bagatelles. After five years of performances around the world in venues large and small, the choicest ensembles have gone into the studio and the results are some of the most exciting and varied music Zorn has ever presented. This third volume features three young rebels that rip and shred their way through some of the gnarliest compositions in the Book of Bagatelles. Wildly intense, searingly hot and raucous, this is an essential and totally radical reading of John Zorn’s Bagatelles.

SUN RA with JOHN GILMORE - Sun Ra Research (SRR CD3; SF, CA, USA) Featuring Sun Ra on synth and interviews and John Gilmore on tenor sax (one track). The Sun Ra Research label is run by two brothers, John and Peter Hinds. It was originally a periodical published as the Sun Ra Quarterly (5 issues) and then renamed as Sun Ra Research (for 13 issues). Every year or two, the Hinds Brothers send me/us a handful of Sun Ra posters as well as two previous CD’s. This disc opens with an incredible 6 & 1/2 minute live duo with Sun Ra on synth and John Gilmore on tenor sax. The rest of this disc consists of interviews from Mr. Ra in Berkeley, San Francisco and Philadelphia from the late 1980’s, as well as some cosmic solo synth. I am Sun Ra fanatic/completist myself, hence I am on a constant search for any of the hundreds of releases (LP’s, CD’s, books, cassettes, etc) the Sun Ra has been involved with. I am not in direct contact with the Hinds brothers so I have no idea if or when we will/might get any more of these.
LTD Edition CD $20 [we have only 10 copies at present]

FOUR RECENTLY RELEASED CD’s FROM THE INTAKT LABEL, Should be in stock in the next 1-2 Weeks:

MYRA MELFORD SPLASH with MICHAEL FORMANEK / CHES SMITH - Splash (Intakt 436; Switzerland) We are thrilled to release our first collaboration with visionary pianist and composer Myra Melford – a mesmerizing debut album from the new trio featuring bassist Michael Formanek and drummer and vibraphonist Ches Smith. Throughout her career, Melford has incorporated elements from other media into her compositions – not only from the visual arts, but also from literature, poetry and architecture. This trio is the latest installment in Melford's ongoing body of work inspired by the art of American post-abstract expressionist painter Cy Twombly. Myra Melford's Splash mirrors the energy and movement captured in Twombly's paintings, a physicality that drives Melford's exploratory music and multi-layered compositions. "Formanek and Smith are alert listeners and adept shape-shifters, as they’ve proven time and time again. Together with Melford, unpacking this music, they’re able to evoke the gestural dynamism and surging volatility that gives Twombly’s work so much of its power. Their expressive range of timbres — as Formanek plays arco, and Smith pivots to vibraphone — creates chamberlike options for Melford as a composer and improviser”, writes Nate Chinen in the liner notes. The result is music of enchanting beauty, oscillating between filigree sound painting and abstract reflection.

SILKE EBERHARD TRIO with JAN RODER / KAY LUBKE - Being-A-Ning (Intakt 435; Switzerland) Saxophonist, clarinetist and composer Silke Eberhard has been shaping the Berlin jazz scene for many years. Her trio with Jan Roder and Kay Lübke was formed in 2006, with Eberhard's history with the two musicians going back to the mid-nineties. The intense relationship between the three can be heard in every note. The trio moves in the proud tradition of saxophone jazz trios and plays its own, highly original compositions. Their art inspires with musical mastery, improvisational intensity, wit and charm, while forging strong accents through mutual trust and the band's particular sound. "The trio play her complex and varied pieces with aplomb and offhand virtuosity. At the same time they capture an explosive, rail-against-the-limits quality", writes Kevin Whitehead in the liner notes. As on their two previous Intakt releases with the trio “Being The Up And Down” and "The Being Inn", the artwork on the cover was created by Roman Signer, one of the most renowned Swiss artists of our time.

CHRISTOPH IRNIGER PILGRIM with STEFAN AEBY / DAVE GISLER / RAFFAELE BOSSARD / MICHAEL STULZ - Human Intelligence Live (Intakt 434; Switzerland) As a working band that has existed for over 10 years and toured extensively all over the world, Pilgrim has developed its own magical sound. After the highly acclaimed studio album Ghost Cat, this formation driven by the joy of playing and inventiveness around Zurich tenor saxophonist Christoph Irniger presents the vibrant live album Human Intelligence. As a well-rehearsed unit, the band fulfills all expectations of modern and innovative jazz based on internal democracy. The always adventurous quintet brings together electric and acoustic sound worlds and fascinates in this live recording of the concert in the club Red Horn District in Bad Meinberg in Germany with great unity in focused interplay, a balance between the individual instrumental voices and a clarity of structure. „Irniger, who evokes both tranquility and energy on his horn, is drawn to music with a probing, caressing quality, whereby sound, thought and feeling gradually edge to a peak of excitement rather than racing to it“, writes Kevin Le Gendre in the liner notes.

JOACHIM KUHN - Échappée (Intakt 431; Switzerland) Joachim Kühn, one of the world's best-known musical personalities from Germany, presents his debut on Intakt Records with the double album Échappée and delivers us a stellar moment in the art of solo piano. Kühn has been one of the most outstanding musicians from contemporary jazz since the mid-1960s and has been captivating listeners for decades with his soulful piano sound and a ravenous drive for freedom. Échappée bears impressive witness to this relentlessness. "This is a summation under the banner of the provisional; these melodies condensed into moments reflect the experiences of a rich life. With this recording, made shortly before his eightieth birthday, the pianist set out to offer the best he was capable of: Joachim Kühn, that exceptional talent, setting his bar higher than ever" writes Bert Noglik in the liner notes and adds: "With Échappée he has created an ‘essential album’, and he has bared all: his craft, his love and his passion." A masterwork.

EUGENE CHADBOURNE - Horror Part Eighteen (Chadula; USA) Eugene Chadbourne’s ongoing ‘Horror’ series has been evolving for more than two decades now and is a tribute to horror movies of the past. The names/personnel listed in the notes are nearly impossible to read, I can read a few names here like John Zorn (alto sax), David Dove (trombone), Redd Volkaert (guitar) and Walter Daniels (harmonica). Like other CD’s in this series, this is a diverse collection of solos from various periods. Track 1 has Doc Chad playing banjo, adding some oddball fuzztone parts, Chad’s charming silly vocals and samples of laughing voices. There is a long free section here with Chad tapping on and bending notes on his banjo and humming (into a kazoo?) along. Although I recognize the sound of Doc Chad’s banjo, he adds layers free effects-laden sounds to the flow. I like the way Doc Chad keeps adding unexpected samples (tapes? digital weirdness?) to his banjo or guitar(s) and voice. Although things get dense at times, Chad keeps the central flow going as he strums, things moving in waves at times. Similar to what Kramer, (former partner of Chad’s from Shockabilly), Chad  is often weaving in founds sounds in the mix: buried voices, subtle feedback or other weird sounds, drums, manipulated acoustic & electric stringed things, laughter, eerie, mysterious and hard to describe sounds all swirling around one another. I was recently listening to the last few tracks on the Mothers’ ‘We’re In It for the Money’ which sound like Stockhausen’s music concrete works. This is also what some/much of this sounds like as well. Midway through track 5 Chad breaks into what sounds like a bluegrass standard, furiously picked and sung, adding layers of reverb as the piece gets more dense and disorienting. This reminds me of when someone is switching channels on an old radio or TV with some narration heard in the distance. At times the reverb on Chad’s voice sounds like he is singing harmonies with himself which sounds great. There are several layers going on simultaneously, speeding up & slowing down, multiple voices, speed-freak banjo playing all swirling like a whirlwind. At 77 plus minutes long, there is quite a bit to listen to here. However, our patience is rewarded with a number of fascinating streams which flow throughout. It is easy to get lost at times so I often listen closely at times and then sit back and take in the entire big picture which is often marvelous overall. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

EUGENE CHADBOURNE with JEB BISHOP / JORRITT DYKSTRA / NATE McBRIDE / CURT NEWTON / EKEHARD ROSSLI / SCHRODER / ROBERTO FABRIZIO / et al - Monk’s Dream with Words (Chadula; USA) This is an all Thelonious Monk program with two different bands, one from Boston and the other recorded at three sessions in the Degenfeld Hippie Farmhouse Studio with Germans (Ekehard Rossli on soprano sax & Schroeder on drums plus another quartet: Roberto Fabrizio on guitar, Flavio & Giacomo Zanuttini on trumpet & tuba and Marco Bianchini on drums. The Boston-based band features Jeb Bishop on trombone, Jorrit Dykstra on reeds & electronics, Nate McBride on bass and Curt Newton on drums. The Boston quintet also has a recent disc of their own with Dr. Chadbourne called, 'Let's Get Weird but Comfortable'.  Dr. Chadbourne plays guitar, sings and wrote lyrics for all the Monk songs that these bands perform. Doc Chad mentions that a variety of vintage instruments were used at the Degenfeld Studio.
Most Monk fans know how hard it is to place his songs correctly, adding his own lyrics makes it even more difficult a challenge. Starting with a relaxed, dreamy version of “Ruby My Dear", Doc Chad sounds both hilarious and charming, his voice ridiculously cool, in a class of his own. Deranged? Yes, but it does make me feel good. Chadbourne plays acoustic guitar on “Monk's Mood", his lyric mentioning the titles of several of Monk’s classic songs.  I love the way that Jorrit Dykstra takes one those great Dolphy-esque inside/outside solos on “Hornin". The next part of this disc is the German/Italian band with another guitarist, 3 horns and drums. There are some truly odd sounding guitars on "“Think of One". Is that an ancient synth? Doc Chad sounds like he is playing an acoustic 12-string on “Nutty", his lyrics referring to peanut-butter and LSD, certainly a combination that Monk might never have thought of. Doc Chad uses a background chorus of wacky voices on “I Mean You", reminding me of the early Mothers dada-esque sense of humor. I don't think I have ever heard a version of “Little Rootie Tootie" quite like this one.  That 12-string guitar and soprano sax sound especially great together on “Monk's Dream". Saxist Ekkehard Rossli, sounds like an older jazz dude, his tone gorgeous at times. Chadbourne does a couple of songs twice, like “Nutty", by both bands. This gives this disc a sort-of thematic thread. There is a marked looseness to this material which I find charming but other folks may not hear it in there. This is certainly one of the best Chadula discs that I've heard in a while, capturing Monk's unique quirky spirit and expanding upon it. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

MATTHEW SHIPP - Black Mystery School Pianists and Other Writings (Autonomedia 978-1-57027-435-0; USA) I’ve known about, listened to and been a friend of pianist Matt Shipp since his arrival in NYC in the mid-1980’s. I’ve heard him play hundreds of times over the past 40 years and still admire his playing. We are also friends and have had a number of stimulating conversations about music and life over those four decades. This is Mr. Shipp’s first book of collected writings and I am fascinated by his thoughtful observations. There is an introduction by Yuko Otomo, an artist/poet herself who was married to the late Steve Dalachinsky, perhaps Downtown’s best poet and chronicler of the Downtown Scene. Ms. Otomo’s intro is superb as it sets the scene for the early Downtown days of the late seventies/early 1980’s, describing what was going on with creative musicians and other seminal artists who lived in Soho and the lower east side. Ms. Otomo does a fine job of capturing Mr. Shipp’s humanity and essence and I completely agree with her observations. There some 20 chapters in this short yet well-filled book, each one discussing another observation of creative life and the musicians that have influenced Mr. Shipp the most: Thelonious Monk, Roscoe Mitchell, David S. Ware, Paul Bley, Wayne Shorter, Sun Ra and Dennis Sandole. I’ve been keeping this book in my backpack for the past couple of weeks and reading one chapter at a time, on my way into and out of NYC on way to and from the store in which I work. Mr. Shipp’s writing also captures his observations on what was and is still happening in the ongoing Downtown Scene, a scene that has captured the attention of Creative Musicians and Artists from around the world for four plus decades and continues to thrive in clubs, galleries, record stores and anywhere that artists can put what they on display. The cover of this book shows Matt Shipp as a child in his communion gown, looking very innocent. His face hasn’t changed that much since we first met many years back. Whenever I see Mr Shipp, I still see his youthful spirit beaming through. Both of us have lived through several lifetimes of creative experiences and continue to search for meaning in the chaos that surrounds us. I really dig this modest book, it captures something that many of us have lived through and continue to be amazed by. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG
BOOK [95 pages] $15

EUNHYE JEONG / MICHAEL BISIO DUO with JOE McPHEE / JAY ROSEN - Morning Bells Whistle Bright (ESP-Disk 5095; USA) Featuring Eunhye Jeong on piano, Michael Bisio on contrabass, Joe McPhee on tenor sax and Jay Rosen on drums. Recorded at Park West Studios in March of 2023. Ms. Eunhye Jeong is a Korean avant/jazz pianist with a solo piano CD released on ESP-Disk in 2021. Bassist Michael Bisio and drummer Jay Rosen have worked together previously with Steven Gauci, David Arner and Brian Groder. Reeds & brass wiz Joe McPhee and works with Michael Bisio for more than 20 years and have around a dozen discs recorded with differing personnel on each one. The liner notes here are provided by the great poet Paul r. Harding who also has a fine disc out on ESP-Disk.
This disc is completely improvised by the quartet and from the opening, we know there is something special, something magical going on here. On “And Then She Was There”, Mr. Bisio takes an extraordinary unaccompanied bowed bass solo before the piano enters, both musicians playing with immense suspense as they go. The interplay between the piano and bass is especially strong, similar to the way that Mr. Bisio plays with his longtime collaborator Matt Shipp. The duo have a way of combining forces, completing each other’s lines. Beginning with track 5, Joe McPhee on tenor and Jay Rosen on drums enter the picture. The duo expands into a quartet for “Drinking Galactic Water”, the intensity expanding furiously and then finally calming down to a more peaceful conclusion. For “Morning Bells Whistle Bright”, the tenor and bowed bass play long, long drone-like lines together. Jay Rosen who used to play in the great Trio X with Joe McPhee is an incredible drummer, especially his cymbal work. Gotta love those sizzling cymbals on “Superpreternatural”, the bowed bass and drums creating a cosmic sounding presence. This is a wonderful disc and will leave you at the edge of your seat throughout. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

JIM O’ROURKE / LEE RANALDO / HEATHER LEIGH / WILLIAM HOOKER / DANIEL CARTER / NEEL MURGAI / KIM GORDON & BILL NACE / LAURA ORTMAN / ALAN LICHT & ANGELA JAEGER / ZOH AMBA / TOM CARTER / et al - The Suzanne Langille Songbook (Feeding Tube Records FTR 788; USA) Thirty-two artists honor the extraordinary legacy of Suzanne Langille through interpretations of her vast songbook. Langille is best known as an acclaimed avant-garde singer-songwriter and collaborator of guitarist Loren Connors. They ventured into electrified blues and abstracted artsongs across more than a dozen albums since the mid-1980s. Langille's songs, with Connors, solo, or other collaborators, are marked by distinct and captivating depth. Her evocative lyrics, layered with themes of loss, longing, and the natural world, defy conventional boundaries, blending poetry with potent melodies. Her work embraces the uncertainty of life and the delicate spaces between joy and sorrow. The double CD includes a 20-page booklet with artist bios, rare photos, and liner notes tracing Langille's roots from a cappella harmonies to 1980s protests through today. This Connors-produced collection is a joint release by Family Vineyard and Feeding Tube Records. The Suzanne Langille Songbook features a diverse array of artists who reinterpret her music, showcasing its timeless and transformative power. Contributors include Kim Gordon & Bill Nace, Jim O'Rourke, Heather Leigh, Lee Ranaldo, Zoh Amba, Sarah Davachi & Sean McCann, William Hooker, Daniel Carter, Alan Licht & Angela Jaeger, David Grubbs, Alison Farrell, Byron Coley, Ras Moshe Burnett, Loren Connors, Tom Carter, Ronnie Yates & Gabriel Martinez, Neel Murgai, Novaga, John Kolodij & Jane Hesser, Kim Gordon & Bill Nace, Andrew Burnes, Dean Roberts, Boris Hauf & Andrea Belfi, Laura Ortman, and Adam Casey & the Liminal Choir with Katherine Walsh.

SARAH HENNIES // RICHARD VALITUTTO - SOVT (elsewhere 034; USA) Featuring Richard Valitutto on piano performing the music of composer Sarah Hennies. After hearing Ms. Hennies’ previous disc on New World, ‘Motor Tapes’ (from 2024), I was intrigued by her composing. I had no idea that she is/was such a prolific composer, this being her 19th full length release since 2013. This piece was recorded in March of 2024. The title of this work is “SOVT” which stands for “Semi-Occluded Vocal Tract”. I am not so sure what this means so I will give this disc a listen to perhaps find out. When the piece begins we hear one note being plucked from the inside of the piano. Over and over. Soon a second note higher is added and repeated as well. The first plucked note resonates acoustically so that we start to notice the texture of length of said note/sound. The two notes are then sped up a bit to a moderate pace. It sounds more like a nylon string acoustic guitar than a struck piano string. A third louder note is then introduced and repeated. Certain notes resonate longer than others so that we start to hear several notes overlapping. When this section ends, a section of single repeating notes occurs with what sounds like a wood block being struck perhaps on the strings inside the piano. Ms. Hennies seems to be dealing with one repeating phrase at a time. Her music here is both percussive and melodic while changing the repeating patterns from one section to the next. Often the repeating rhythms remind me of a ticking clock, insistent yet calm. As the repeating lines emerge in different sections, we notice if a phrase speeds up or slows down a bit as we also notice the slight difference in texture or timbre that each struck sound has. The repeating pattern device here seems to be an extension of minimalist composers like Steve Reich or Philip Glass. Ms. Hennies’ music changes more rapidly and sounds more engaging. Midway, things become more intense, the patterns being struck more forcefully. At times, it is difficult to tell what instrument is being used: the sound is in between rhythmic and melodic fragments perhaps with a bit of both. Over time I began to notice an overall set of patterns which are separated by space or silence yet sound thematic. In some way I am reminded of Morton Feldman whose compositions are not linear yet still have a way of engaging our feelings or perceptions. Sarah Hennies seems to have found her own place among the other giants of minimalism. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

VANESSA ROSSETTO - pictures of the warm south (erstwhile ErstSolo 010-2; USA) Vanessa Rossetto has been recording for the erstwhile label since 2015, working exclusively in duos with erstwhile contenders: Ken Parks, Matthew Revert, Lionel Marchetti and Moniek Darge. This is Ms. Rossetto’s first solo effort for the erstwhile label and it is a two CD set. Vanessa Rossetto is an American composer who uses chamber instrumentation, field recordings, electronics and a wide array of different objects in her music. Disc One begins with some distant piano by Lucy Ilyou and field recordings capturing voices and other odd sounds. There is a spoken word female voice on “big ears” which sounds like it is coming from a radio broadcast or a loudspeaker at an airport. It is difficult to hear what this voice is saying yet the voice rambles on with a calm tone. On each piece, another layer of sounds or samples is added, laughing and singing voices, rumbles, sounds that are hard to make out, all flowing in one direction like a river or stream. Ms. Rossetto’s captures conversations from other folks that evoke different feelings depending on what we are hearing and what we are thinking about to ourselves. The music/sounds on this disc sound like a soundtrack to everyday life with normal sounds being added to the brew or sonic soundscape. What I find interesting here is this: as I listen, I seem to hear a narrative flow going on, a series of scenes which unfold is some sort of order. My attention also flows in and out of the stream as I listen. I believe that John Cage, the philosopher, was right that if we are serious listeners, we hear more that is going on than we often realize. I find these discs to be most fascinating, rather like watching a film on/in our own minds or projected on our own eyelid screens. The narrative flow is there, we must add our own imagination to make things even more interesting. Another sonic treasure from our friends at erstwhile. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG
2 CD Set $21

JEPH JERMAN - “anthems” (HP 004; USA) Seattle-based composer Jeph Jerman has been releasing records since 1989 and has upwards of 200 plus works. I’ve only heard a few of these on labels like Room40 and erstwhile. Mr. Jerman’s music has utilized sampling and looping, as well as field recordings and found objects. This disc consists of recordings made in Arizona, Mexico and Los Angeles between 2004 and 2023. Each of the six pieces was recorded under different circumstances. “empirical evidence” features a duo of Steve Jansen (formerly of Japan) and Mr. Jerman in the studio. Although Steve Jansen played drums in Japan (UK band from 70’s-80’s), he has expanded his sonic palette ever since. What we hear are a few layers of sampled sounds: wind-like, rubbed surfaces, distant thunder, all carefully altered as they flow. “yonder in time” as an older piece by Eric Lunde and Mr. Jerman which sounds like more layers of field recordings: the textures and timbres of rubbed objects are slowly manipulated with more distant sounding thunder hovering in the background. “alteperl mexihco capitol in movement” consists of higher pitched drones which fade into near silence. “spectral quartet” sounds like it was recorded inside a box with someone slowly tapping and rubbing its surface. After a while we start to notice the difference between each of these sounds which sound similar at first glance/listen. The pieces all flow together yet each piece evoke a different, often eerie vibe. This piece features a quartet with Tim Barnes, Bill Hutson, Ted Byrnes and Jerman but it does sound like the other pieces here. “our national anthem” supposed consists of samples or versions of our national anthem although it sounds more like industrial music/sound with layers of grinding metals. “funeral” closes this disc with more layers of eerie metallic sounds. The overall feel or vibe of this disc is one of uneasiness, which is the same vibe I get after reading through the Bad News of the day (March of 2025). - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

MICHAEL LAROCCA - Physical (Guardrail Recordings GRR 007; USA) Featuring Michael LaRocca on solo drums. Over the past few years, I’ve been noticing a number of young immensely creative drummers who have played here at DMG: James Paul Nadien, Dave Miller, Kevin Shea, Kevin Murray, Colin Hinton, Patrick Golden, Yuko Togami, Joey Sullivan, Willy Rodriguez, Lesley Mok, Jarred Chase and many others. I’ve caught Mike LaRocca play several times at our in-store series and have much impressed by his playing each time. This 2 disc set was recorded in June & July of 2024. A two CD set is quite alot of solo drumming but Mr. LaRocca takes his time as the discs evolve. Disc One begins slowly with moderate tempo drumming, thoughtful, well-paced and no showing off of his chops. LaRocca seems to be developing a theme and varying his playing in stops and starts. The second piece begins quietly with LaRocca rubbing his cymbals carefully, an eerie effect is used cautiously throughout this piece. Playing quietly and coaxing out ghosts is something that LaRocca does best. LaRocca plays mostly cymbals and other small pieces of metals on piece 3, his playing evoking the rising and falling of organic currents, which flow through us all like the blood in our veins or the pulse of our heartbeats. On each piece, he creates a different vibe and concentrates on different sections of his kit and using sticks, brushes and other objects on his drums, cymbals and whatever else he is tapping on. He keeps shifting or varying his approach so that nothing stays the same dynamically for very long. Each systematically evolves with occasional grooves and variations. Even with two CD’s involved, Mr. LaRocca keeps things interesting throughout. One of the things that I noticed about Mr. LaRocca when he was playing here at DMG is how well he plays during the more quiet sections of the free/jazz sets that we often have at our weekly in-store series. He is a marvel at more restrained sections and never overplays. He is a gifted percussionist and this release shows in a fine, bright light! - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

NEW & BACK IN STOCK FROM THE MIGHTY CORBETT VS DEMPSEY LABEL:

NRG ENSEMBLE with MARS WILLIAMS / KEN VANDERMARK / BRIAN SANDSTROM / KENT KESSLER / STEVE HUNT - Hold That Thought (CvsD CD106; Chicago, Ill, USA) From a night of music in Holland that's become legendary among NRG Ensemble enthusiasts, Hold That Thought presents a blazing concert of the quintet's unique sound. With Mars Williams and Ken Vandermark on reeds, Kent Kessler and Brian Sandstrom on basses (the latter doubling on trumpet and electric guitar), and Steve Hunt on drums, this incarnation of the band was arguably its tightest and mightiest, taking the inspiration of founder Hal Russell (1926-1992) and running with it. All the way. The quirkiness and eccentricity of Russell's vision remained a lasting part of the fabric of NRG, but the level of discipline and craftsmanship achieved by this version of the combo is arguably taken to a whole other level. Working with original material, mostly by Williams and Vandermark, NRG Ensemble had its signature pugilistic feel, with lots of time changes and dynamic shifts, quick starts and hard stops. Williams certainly knew how to push up the energy/NRG with a strangulated solo or a sudden burst of beautiful melody; all his years in creative music, from time spent as Roscoe Mitchell's copyist to countless weeks on the road kicking ass with the Psychedelic Furs, led him to a core understanding that linked many kinds of noise-making – rock, funk, soul, free jazz, squeaky-bonk improvised music. Those tributaries meet in NRG Ensemble, with his long standing colleagues gathered to joyfully up the ante. Williams chose this beautiful recording as one of three archival tapes he wanted released as soon as possible, and he approached CvsD with the job of shepherding them into the world just before his tragically early death from cancer in November, 2023.

GLOBE UNITY with ALEXANDER VON SCHLIPPENBACH / PETER BROTZMANN / GUNTER HAMPEL / GERD DUDEK / WILLEM BREUKER / MANFRED SHOOF / PETER KOWALD / MANI NEUMEIER / et al - Globe Unity (CvsD CD021; USA) “Reissue, originally released in 1967. In 1966, pianist Alexander von Schlippenbach assembled his first large ensemble to play his compositions "Globe Unity" and "Sun." This 14-piece band, which brought together some of the leading figures in European improvised music, would eventually expand -- incorporating not only Europeans but also American and Asian musicians -- and assume its rightful name: Globe Unity Orchestra. In its nascent outing, beautifully recorded at Ariola Studio in Cologne, Schlippenbach's band was already sensational, performing at various festivals and solidifying the reputations of some of its star players. Most notably among these was a 25-year-old saxophonist named Peter Brotzmann, whose whole band -- saxophonist Kris Wanders, drummer Mani Neumeier, and bassist Peter Kowald, the latter of whom would for a period assume nominal leadership of Globe Unity -- was incorporated into the large Schlippenbach group. Globe Unity was Brotzmann's first outing on LP. Kowald's too. And future drum heroes of the krautrock genre, Neumeier (with Guru Guru) and Jaki Liebezeit (with Can) constitute the incredible rhythm section. If you factor in German early-free-music mainstays Gunter Hampel (here on flute and bass clarinet, no vibes), trumpeter Manfred Schoof, bassist Buschi Niebergall, and tenor saxophonist Gerd Dudek, Dutch saxophonist and clarinetist Willem Breuker, French trumpeter Claude Deron, the enormity of the band's potential becomes apparent. Add Schlippenbach himself, an absolute cyclone on the piano as well as prominent tubular bells and gong, and the global scene is set. Schlippenbach's unique position at the time, as one of the foremost players in German free music, but also as a rising young composer who'd studied with Bernd Alois Zimmermann, allowed him to serve as exactly the right conduit for several approaches to creative music, from introducing his graphically notated scores to making a perfect context for the debuts of future star improvisors Brotzmann and Kowald. Schlippenbach's Globe Unity was first issued on SABA in 1967, then MPS a couple of years after that. It has long been out-of-print and has only ever appeared on CD in a tiny Japanese version published in 1999. Corbett vs. Dempsey's reissue comes with facsimile cover. The music was remastered from the original tapes and is licensed directly from MPS. Anyone interested in the history of improvised music needs to hear Globe Unity, which retains a sense of urgency 56 years after it was waxed.

JOE McPHEE - Straight up, Without Wings: The Musical Flight of Joe McPhee (CvsD 126BK; USA) In Straight Up, Without Wings, Joe McPhee surveys sixty years in creative music. Starting with his trumpeter-father's influence and formative years in the U.S. Army, McPhee recounts experiences as a Black-hippy-cum-budding-musician based in upstate New York, perched at an ideal distance from Manhattan's free jazz demimonde of the 1960s and its loft scene of the 1970s. A natural storyteller, revealing never-told tales and reveling in the joys of noise, McPhee puts the influence of -- and encounters with -- Ornette Coleman, John Coltrane, and Albert Ayler into the context of an independently-minded young player, ravenous for experience, dealing with the crucible of racism, seeking to break out beyond the bounds of a regional Hudson Valley scene that he knows like the back of his hand. The memoir draws forward through thrilling passages in Europe and across the United States, as McPhee gains momentum, as his music becomes the impetus for multiple record labels, as he collaborates with figures from Peter Brötzmann to Pauline Oliveros, and as he eventually goes on to inspire musicians far and wide. Written as an oral history, deftly conducted by Mike Faloon to preserve McPhee's unique narrative voice, Straight Up, Without Wings includes "reflections" by eight musicians from across the protagonist's rich history. IANCU DUMITRESCU // ANSAMBUL HYPERION - self/titled (CvsD CD115; USA) It's a miracle that some records ever get made. Right in the middle of Ceaușescu's ultra-repressive dictatorship, composer Iancu Dumitrescu managed to arrange for his first LP, a compilation of radical new music by Dumitrescu and three of his Romanian colleagues, all older than him: Ocavian Nemescu, Stefan Niculescu, and Corneliu Cezar. Dumitrescu was – and remains – one of the most iconoclastic figures in contemporary music. Often referred to as a spectralist (though he distances himself from the approach taken by the French spectral composers) and self-described as an adherent of "acousmatic" music (though again he situates himself at a remove from the French electroacoustic composers) and highly influenced by deep studies in phenomenology, Dumitrescu's music often focuses intensely on one sonorous object, penetrating it until it is entirely blown open. He formed Ansamblul Hyperion, a chamber group featuring adventurous young musicians, in 1976. Four years later, against all odds, in a radio studio in Bucharest, they recorded this groundbreaking compilation for Electrecord, the state record company. The program starts with one of Dumitrescu's most important works, the breathtaking, string-centric "Movemur et Sumus" (1978), translated from the Latin as "move and exist." Nemescu's "Combinatii In Cercuri" (1965) was composed for the ensemble together with an electronic component that was added to the piece in 1980. Composed in 1979, Niculescu's "Sincronie" features Dumitrescu himself on piano, as well as conducting, as he does on all the works; written for an indeterminate number of performers between 2 and 12 (here featuring 9) it utilizes fixed elements in the score together with openly improvised elements, expanding from a core vibraphone part to encompass an almost ecstatic meditation on stasis and motion. Cezar's work "Rota" (1976) combines Romanian, Balkan, and other Eastern melodic resonances with electronics (some of them startlingly video-game-like) and preparations on various instruments, lending an ear to the natural sounds of wind, waves, and seagull calls. This historically charged document, released in 1981 in Romania and available for the most part only there, has never been reissued in any form. Gorgeously remastered from the original tapes, it appears here with its original cover design.

TRISTAN HONSINGER & THE HOUSE OF WASPS - Noisy Sadness (Creative Sources 841; Spain) A personal and evocative suite written during the isolation of the COVID-19 period, bringing together the legendary Tristan Honsinger (cello, vocal, narration) with his long-standing Tokyo-based ensemble, The House of Wasps — Yuriko Mukojima (violin, voice), Takashi Seo (double bass), and Shuichi Chino (piano) — in a performance that seamlessly blends chamber improvisation, storytelling, and emotional intensity.

UN DRAME MUSICAL INSTANTANE - Machiavel (GRRR 2023; Canada) Blending acoustic and electronic elements with an expansive lineup of musicians, the final album from Un Drame Musical Instantané, recorded across multiple French studios, brings together Jean-Jacques Birgé, Bernard Vitet, Steve Arguelles, Benoît Delbecq, Yves Robert, DJ Nem, and guest vocalists like Archie Shepp and Otomo Yoshihide in a genre-defying mix of jazz, contemporary, improvised, and experimental approaches.

LEA BERTUCCI OLIVIA BLOCK - I Know the Number of the Sand and the Measure of the Sea (Room 40 4238CD; Australia) ‘I Know the Number of the Sand and the Measure of the Sea’ is the first collaboration of Lea Bertucci and Olivia Block. This collaboration was set into slow motion some years ago, in 2017, when Lea and Olivia connected through an interview facilitated by writer Steve Smith. In 2022, the artists finally had a chance to collaborate, performing an improvised set at Pioneer Works in New York City. Since then, the New York based Bertucci and Chicago based Block remotely built out ideas stemming from their live performance, passing sounds back and forth, until I Know the Number of the Sand and the Measure of the Sea was forged into existence. The title is a famous utterance of the Oracle of Delphi, a cult of female priestesses who would inhale the poisonous vapors of nearby volcanic vents to induce mystical visions for their seekers, often changing the course of civilization. Getting high from the earth. That is what this album hopes to achieve for our listeners. This collaboration sees Block playing synthesizer and tape, and Bertucci using her own voice processed through reel-to-reel tape, as well as microcassette collage of field recordings. Recorded and mixed by Olivia Block and Lea Bertucci. Mastered by Lawrence English at Negative Space Special.

ARTHUR RUSSELL - Sketches For World Of Echo/Open Vocalphrases, Where Songs Come In And Out (Audika Records AU 1029CD; USA) "Open Vocal Phrases, Where Songs Come in And Out and Sketches For World of Echo (AU 1029CD) offer two intimate unedited Arthur Russell solo live performances recorded at Phill Niblock's Experimental Intermedia Foundation in Downtown NYC on 12/20/85 and 06/25/84. These extraordinary performances were recorded 18 months apart between 1984/85 by Steve Cellum and overseen by Phill and Arthur. ZAAAR - Ovules (Subsound Records 148CD’ Italy) ZAÄAR is a Belgian collective, twin project of Neptunian Maximalism, the cosmic free-jazz orchestra that has been turning the heads of psychedelic, experimental and space ambient music lovers. Composed by singer and multi-instrumentalist Guillaume CZLT, saxophonist Jean-Jacques Duerinckx, drummer Sébastien Schmit, bassist HP Desrosiers and the electronics of Didier Nietzsche, the group produces a psychedelic free-jazz soaked in droning-ambient, which awakens and stimulates old and forgotten senses since humanity lives in a grey and industrialized reality. Through the music of ZAÄAR, listeners return to a time when everything was new, dangerous and exciting. Welcome to the jungle! Ovules is a series of improvisations performed by ZAÄAR in various spaces all over the kingdom of Belgium. Ovules is a triptych inspired by Tchouang-Tseu's fable "The dream of the butterfly" about dream and reality reciprocity. Ovules is a surrealist jazz manifest due to a collaboration between labels WV Sorcerer Productions and Subsound Records and the preacher of the band's first proper studio album. Limited Edition 7"-6-panel trifold cover with OBI.

ROOTLESS & STARBIRTHED - Rootless & Starbirthed (Feeding Tube Records FTR 786CD; USA) "This album has been a long time coming. We were lucky enough to do a tape in 2022 with Jeremy Hurewitz (aka Rootless) called what the truth leaves out. But this is the first time we've been able to work with long-time fave, Matt Lajoie, who appears with Ash Brooks as half of the no-longer-active duo, Starbirthed. The idea for this pairing was presented to us by Jeremy, who recorded the album at his cabin in southern Vermont in 2019. Jeremy's Rootless project generally features at least a soupçon of acoustic guitar (often combined with electronics or other things) and Starbirthed was initially canted towards producing music for meditation, although their instrumentation -- voice, bass, guitar, synth, bells, etc. -- also meant that some of the recordings possessed more of a gentle free rock heft than anything overtly new agey. Anyway, soon after the session, the Plague hit, the members of Starbirthed decided to go their own ways, and everything got sorta dragged down in the torpor of the times. But Jeremy persisted in wanting to get the session finished and together, and he succeeded quite admirably. The music on Rootless & Starbirthed is a glorious celebration of what I'd describe as a rural utopian vision of possible futures in which the world does not go straight into the sh*tter. This is music that glows with kind of positive energy that might be galling if it didn't sound so great. Both Rootless and Starbirthed (as well as Matt's many other projects -- Herbcraft, ML Wah, etc.) are about creating an atmosphere in which beauty thrives as much as anything else. And this great collab LP flows like a newly discovered river, carrying us away from the anxiety and insect paranoia of our quotidian reality. Positing something better, just around the corner. Something we are not yet able to see, but which might. just. save the day. This might sound like old man hippie thinking, but that's cool. I've been called worse. And so have you." - Byron Coley

MORE CD’S FROM THE ONGOING ILK MUSIC SALE:

FOSTERCHILD with SEBASTIAN GILLE / KASPER TRANBERG / JACOB ANDERSKOV / DAVID HELM / FABIAN ARENDS - Dear Earthling (Ilk Music 295CD; Denmark) Listening to Dear Earthling is to step into a universe which is deeply sensitive and intuitive, yet highly sophisticated in its proportions and dimensions. The music radiates space and magic, and at times creates a feeling of profound simplicity, while being at its core multidirectional if not to say rather complex.Uniting a post-jazz and contemporary music vibration, with a deeply existential introspection, it is the sound of surrendering to things grander than ourselves.
The musicians, based in Köln & Copenhagen, together form a wonderful match. Having started their collaboration in 2015, when Helm and Arends invited Anderskov to Köln, they instantly realized that their combination of personalities had a potential for granting magical dust to music unifying intuition and structure. Later they expanded the collaboration with several concerts in both DK and Germany, and added Gille and Tranberg, two of Europe’s leading horn players. In November 2018, Deutschlandfunk’s Harald Rehmann offered the ensemble three days in the large recording room in Cologne. These recordings have now been mixed and mastered - and the dialogical interplay is ignited and igniting…

PETER DANSTRUP with MAKIKO HIRABAYASHI / NINA BAUN / BJORN HEEBOLL - Sacrified (ILK Music 260CD; Denmark) With this collection of unique songs, all inspired by religious subjects and tales, bass player and composer Peter Danstrup stands out as a remarkable player on
the Danish jazz scene. Ranging from the large Reptiles- orchestra with its solid brass core, over the zippy trio Klökkeblömst to now the octet Sacrified, he has composed and orchestrated a wide tonal palette of expressions, adding new releases to his oeuvre every year since 2010.
The 14 tracks are composed to a special ensemble of 5 female and 3 male musicians. New to his musical universe is the significant use of vocals and lyrics, which has led to a series of epic, harsh and yet surprisingly singable melodies and arrangements. It is beautiful music; at times sharp, stately, groovy, grotesque – yes you can trace even cabaret and musical here – and the timbre is distinctive. In a kaleidoscope of colours this music illustrates the religiously inspired lyrics in a new and surprising way – just as Dali’s cover painting epitomizes the story of the crucifixion from another angle. Take a deep breath and take an hour-long dive into this musical adventure.

PETER BRUUN / SOREN KJAERGAARD / JONAS WESTERGAARD - Thesaurós (Ilk Music 341CD; Denmark) THĒSAURÓS is an ambitious work for piano trio by the Danish drummer Peter Bruun. The trio has matured over 25 years and has been immersed in this material for four years. The result is a spirited take on a classical constellation that points partly back into history and partly directly into the future.
Søren Kjærgaard, Jonas Westergaard and Peter Bruun have for several years been pioneering voices on the European music scene in modern jazz, improvised music and contemporary composition. The trio is a collective symbiotic entity that immerses itself in the tension between complex stringent structures and improvisation.
THĒSAURÓS is a work that appeals to the listener through the highest common denominator. Peter Bruun's extensive compositions place great demands on the trio. Both in complexity and scope, and most importantly, through new fundamental perspectives on metric understandings, form and musical strategies for improvisation. Likewise, THĒSAURÓS demands a lot from the listener who, in return, will be rewarded with a comprehensive and coherent work.

PER CARSTEN - Solo (Ilk Music 222CD; Denmark) Kresten Osgood presents the solo effort of one of Denmarks most original voices: EWI master Per Carsten. The album has liner notes by the legendary trumpet player/composer Palle Mikkelborg, former music chief of Montmartre Niels Chistensen and Osgood himself who doesn't hesitate to call this a postmodern jazz manifesto
Per Carsten has had a long and successful career as member of the Danish Radio Big Band, for which he also composed and arranged. He participated in the legendary collaboration with Miles Davis and Palle Mikkelborg "Aura" and released a handful of fusion oriented albums in the 1980 ́s and ́90 ́s. After battling a terrible cancer it became impossible for him to play the alto sax and flute (up until then his main instruments) and he began practicing the EWI (Electronic Wind Instrument) on which he succeeded in creating a completely unique sound.

DMG CASSETTE SECTION:

JAIR-ROHM PARKER WELLS - Tonal Vortex (Ephem Aural t51; USA) NJ-born bassist Jair-Rohm Parker Wells was once a member of Machine Gun, a legendary free/jazz/rock/noise improv band that met at Rutgers Livingston Jazz College in the early 1980’s and recorded three great releases for the MuWorks label between 1986 and 1991. The other founding members included Thomas Chapin on alto sax, Bob Musso on lead guitar and poet John Richey on vocals, samples, etc. Along with other Downtown bands like Naked City, Carbon, Curlew and the Lounge Lizards, Machine Gun were explosive live, check out any of their three discs and you see what I mean. The band eventually broke up and sadly Thomas Chapin passed away in 1998 of leukemia. Since then Mr. Parker Wells moved to Scandinavia for a decade and then back to NJ in recent years. Although Mr. Parker Wells records infrequently, I still keep my eye and ear on whatever he does, still playing with Bob Musso and playing at DMG on rare occasions.
‘Tonal Vortex’ is Jair-Rohm’s new release, a limited edition 2 cassette set on a freaky new label known as Ephem Aural. It is housed in a lovely DVD sized plastic case, each cassette a different color and a small tied scroll with a download code written inside. High class all the way. Parker-Wells plays a NS Design OmniBass with an array of electronics. The sound of JR’s bass is larger than life, immensely haunting, rumbling, shifting layers of sub-harmonics. Considering that this was released on cassette, it sounds closer to the way it should be without digital condensation. JR has several layers all moving around one another, bowed bass being the main one with added effects altering the other layers. At times, one layer sounds like the voice of whales at sea. Expanding and contracting, waves crashing upon waves. On “Astral Reverie in Harmonic Oscillation”, there is a bowed drone at the center with some rubbery fretless bass notes being carefully plucked in a harp-like way. JR plays a lovely, transcendent melody here in his solo. making every note count. On one level this is a type of trance music since there are a few lower notes which are repeated throughout this piece over and over, rather like a throbbing heartbeat. Tape 2 begins with “Interstellar Lullaby of the Deep Resonance” which begins with a charming elastic fretless bass solo over another hypnotic repeating line. JR’s solo is long and story-like in the way that it unfolds. For “Modo Unus”, JR adds several layers of bowed bass with differing amounts of reverb as sonic seasoning. Jair-Rohm Parker Wells does a great job of layering several lines in a compelling interwoven tapestry which organically moves or flows from one section to the next. This is a tour-de-force, especially considering that this is a solo effort. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

JOHN ZORN - Hermetic Cartography at the Drawing Center- Feb 7th - May 11th, 2025:

John Zorn’s ‘Hermetic Cartography’ will be accompanied by a series of musical performances curated by Mr. Zorn that will be performed in the exhibition. Performances will be held from 7:30 - 9pm on the first Saturday of each month (March - May, 2025) and will be free and open to the public. The Drawing Center is located at 35 Wooster Street, in Soho in Manhattan, NYC. Website: https://drawingcenter.org

Known predominantly as a groundbreaking figure in New York’s avant-garde and experimental music scenes, John Zorn has long been celebrated for his radical innovations in music. However, his abstract drawings—a private language of symbols and notations—have remained a closely guarded secret. Offering profound insight into Zorn’s creative mind, Hermetic Cartography reveals a new dimension of his artistic practice by showcasing works on paper that span seven decades of his visionary engagement with mark-making, improvisation, and the esoteric.

The exhibition includes a diverse array of Zorn’s visual artworks, graphic scores, dense philosophical notations, abstract poetry and artist books, and not only highlights Zorn’s radical approach to marks on paper but also his unique Theatre of Musical Optics and other experimental projects. By exploring these visual elements, the exhibition provides a new perspective on how Zorn's abstract works intersect with and inform his musical compositions.

THIS NOTE COMES FROM MY GOOD BUDDY JOEL HARRISON, Gifted Guitarist and Organizer. His yearly concerts at LPR have been a highlight for myself and other Guitar Freaks…

Dear Guitar Enthusiasts … There's a lot going:

—MIDWESTERNERS: please take note of the below dates. I'm lucky to be playing with two of the greatest B-3 organ players alive, and fantastic drummers as well. https://joelharrison.com/shows/

—On March 14 AGS (Alternative Guitar Summit) recordings releases ANUPAM SHOBHAKAR'S LIQUID REALITY, a tour de force on double neck guitar that fuses Indian music, jazz, and rock. If you like John McLaughlin this is for you. Preorder here: https://agsrecordings.bandcamp.com/

—We have uploaded some GREAT NEW PODCASTS to the AGS youtube channel with Ben Monder, Redd Volkaert, and more to come. Please check it out.

—For a couple of years I have been working on a major piece entitled "Burn Pit." The orchestration is jazz big band and a 16 person chorus. The subject matter is the deadly toxic burnpits from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan that killed or sickened hundreds of thousands of military personnel. To fulfill my obligation to the NY State Council on the Arts and the Governors Office of NY, from whom I received a generous composition grant, I have posted a video discussing and playing excerpts from this work here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ulyk1Pgrym8

From CHRIS CUTLER:

Formerly of HENRY COW, THE ART BEARS, NEWS FOR BABEL & RECOMMENDED RECORDS (ReR) has been creating an ongoing series of podcasts called the Probes series. I am often fascinated at listening to each of these as Mr. Cutler does an incredible job of showing a deep history of Creative Music in the 20th century & beyond.
