“I see a station just in front of me,
Stop this train and let me out!
"The driver smiled and shook his head for me,"this train don't stop for anyone.
And, if you want to leave this railway line,
You'll have to jump off on your own.
Someone came and gave me sandwiches, Saying that I looked unwell.
He took my pulse and he gave it back to me,
And then he hit me with his bell.
He made a speech to all the passengers,
He said “I’ve been a place today;
And anyone who'd care to come with me.
Step outside and walk this way.
"Inside the seats were warm and comfortable,
Outside the train was wild and strange.
I said, "yes, sir, I’d like to come with you,
It's really time I made a change.
"I left my seat and walked up front with him,
And he began to push the door.
I looked outside but it nearly blinded me.
I'd never seen such light before.
This has been a difficult week for many of us sane adults who have no choice but to watch the real news as it unfolds in front of us, watching our fragile world being torn apart by greed, misdirection, misinformation and sheer lunacy. I’ve had an ongoing nightmare in which Satan comes down to the earth and chooses Putin, Trump and all other rightwing politicians/dictators as his representatives on the Planet Earth. I am scared about what is happening now and how the next few years will unfold taking us back to a darker time in our collective history/herstory.
The above song was written by Kevin Ayers, a founding member of Soft Machine who left after their first album when they were on tour with the Jimi Hendrix Experience in the US in 1968. Kevin Ayers played bass, wrote songs and sung for Soft Machine and had a long career as a solo artists from 1969 onwards. His first three albums, ‘Joy of a Toy’, ’Shooting at the Moon’ and ‘Whatevershebringswesing’ are all true Canterbury treasures. I was fortunate to have caught him live in the 1980’s, first with the incredible guitarist Ollie Halsall (from Patto) in his band and a few times as a solo artist. The above song, “Stop This Train (Again Doing It)”, closes out the first side of his debut album and whenever I listen to it, I feel like I am on a runaway train, doomed to disaster. It is a similar feeling to the way I feel as Rome burns around me/us. We’ve gotten even more donations in this week so thanks once again to all of our friends out there who’ve reached out to help us survive. My good friend, jazz journalist and author, Tom Greenland, wrote an article about me and future of DMG for Jazz Times on-line which you can check out here: https://jazztimes.com/features/profiles/small-business-big-city-downtown-music-gallery-perseveres/.

This Week's Dynamic Discs Begin with:
ALLISON MILLER with the ONE O’CLOCK LAB BAND - Big and Lovely (Royal Potato Family 20286 24504; USA) “Revered drummer and composer Allison Miller — celebrated for a series of critically acclaimed recordings with both her own band Boom Tic Boom, as well as the jazz supergroup Artemis — was invited in 2022 to guest with the multiple Grammy Award-nominated University of North Texas’ One O’Clock Lab Band, under the direction of Alan Baylock. The resulting collaboration was so successful that Allison and Alan decided to reunite for an album project, recording a selection of Allison’s compositions with new arrangements for the One O’Clock Lab Band.” - bandcamp blurb
I’ve had my eye & ear on drummer/composer Allison Miller for a while, checking out her playing with Shakers n’ Bakers (with Jeff Lederer), Jessica Lurie, Marty Ehrlich and Myra Melford. Her own composing and bandleading keeps getting better, check out her band Boom Tic Boom or her co-led bands with Jenny Scheinman and Carmen Staaf. Ms. Miller’s new disc just arrived and it is her most ambitious project yet, leading a 25 piece lab band from North Texas State, the legendary jazz college. Although Ms. Miller composed all of the songs here, a different musician arranged each one. Although this is student ensemble, North Texas State is well known for preparing jazz musicians for successful careers in big bands and other creative ensembles from all over.
The title track is first and it begins with an impressive reeds and brass only fanfare before the rhythm team joins in. “Big and Lovely” is a rather funky, bluesy groove piece with an infectious vibe that has me smiling as soon as it started. There is a tenor sax solo by Anthony Bolden which is highlight here. Another highlight is the intricate interplay with pianist Jake Nalagan and Ms. Miller’s superb drumming. “Fuster” is actually a haunting ballad with sublime flute work, a tasty clarinet solo (by Ian Weidmann) and even tastier guitar solo (Will St. Peter). Another marvel here and throughout are the arrangements which make good use of the entirety of the band. As someone who has listened to an immense amount of big band/large jazz ensemble music since 1972/1973, I found this disc to be one of the best examples of big band music that I’ve heard in recent memory. I’ve been alternating this disc and the recent large ensemble offering by John Hollenbeck as the two current favorites. I urge you to check out both of the spirited/creative masterworks. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

ROB BROWN / BRANDON LOPEZ / JUAN P CARLETTI - Walkabout (Mahakala 070; USA) Featuring Rob Brown on alto sax & flute, Brandon Lopez on contrabass and Juan P. Carletti on drums. Recorded at Park West Studios in April of 2023. Alto sax giant, Rob Brown, came on the Downtown Scene in the late 1980’s, first recording a duo with another Downtown newcomer, Matt Shipp. Since then Mr. Brown has been collaborating with William Parker, Joe Morris, Daniel Levin and Steve Swell and has been a longtime featured soloist with a number of William Parker’s varied projects. In 2022, Rob Brown recorded a duo effort with South American-born drummer Juan P Carletti. For this date contrabassist Brandon Lopez was added. Since become a part of the burgeoning Downtown Scene, Mr. Lopez has become one the best and most resourceful bassists around, collaborating with many of Downtown’s finest musicians. This disc with a long piece called “Microcosm”. Brandon Lopez’ pulsating bass is at the center of storm here. Rob Brown starts out slowly, concentrating of each note, building, expanding, the interaction between all three players erupting together, rising higher and higher as they go. Mr. Brown has a distinctive, bittersweet tone on his alto sax, somewhere in between Ornette & Eric Dolphy yet still it is his own voice. Brown takes his time as he spins out streams of notes, holding onto and then stretching out certain notes. The rhythm team here is a powerful and inventive one. The pulse or flow is elastic in the way it keeps spinning or flowing, speeding up, slowing down, always as one force. After a long expressive solo by Brown he finishes and the drums and bass take over, dueting together in a most marvelous way. Lopez’ bowed bass and Carletti’s mallet-work sound great together since they are in similar tonal range. Brown re-enters when Carletti hits a fine organic/funky groove on a cowbell and toms. The music here is more like a conversation between old friends with calm and heated exchanges. As the first piece comes to an end, Rob’s note-twisting and Brandon’s bowing get closer in their tonal range. Rob Brown switches to flute for “Zephyr”, the bowed bass and rustling percussion meshing as one dream-like sound. Last Tuesday (1/28/25), Brandon Lopez played in a bass duo with Max Johnson for an extraordinary set. Last month Mr. Lopez played in a duo with German daxophone player Kriton Beyer. Mr. Lopez played well in both situations and is in fine form here as well, a true team player, making everyone he plays with sound better. This disc has great sound as do all recordings I’ve heard from Park West Studios. This is one the best sax trio dates I’ve heard in a long while! - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

AYUMI ISHITO with KEVIN SHEA / GEORGE DRAGUNS - Roboquarians, Vol. 2 (577 Records 5934; USA) Following the digital release of Roboquarians Volume 1, the trio of Ayumi Ishito on saxophone with effects, George Draguns on guitar and Kevin Shea on drums return with four wild jazz compositions by Draguns, their electrified performances infusing ferocious improvisations with an intense psychedelic energy and an avant-punk sensibility; wild!

TUNGU / MIA ZABELKA / STEFAN STRASSER - the confidence of one swimming against the current (FMR CD707-0824; UK) Featuring Mia Zabelka on violin, electronics & voice, Stefan Strasser on synth, guitar, piano & electronics and Tungu (a/k/a Sergey Senchuk) on field recordings, acoustic bass, samples & voice. In last week’s DMG newsletter (1/24/25), I reviewed a disc by Ukrainian experimental artist Tungu playing in duos with some 18 different musicians from around the world and was most impressed by what I heard. For this disc, Tungu is working with Austrian violinist, Mia Zabelka, who has worked with Lydia Lunch and Maggie Nicols, two vocalist from much different backgrounds. I hadn’t heard of Cologne-based improviser Stefan Strasser before now although he does have a few self-produced releases out. From what I can tell, each musician recorded their parts at home and then were assembled (mixed & mastered) by Mr. Strasser. Each of the 17 pieces here are between 3 and 5 minutes. “Loopy Froopy” starts with a distant marching beat on a snare drum with eerie electronics or sample soon floating in. Many of the pieces here have a looped samples which are repeated on & off throughout a piece with other sounds added. A variety of swirling electronics or samples are interwoven together, sampled beats (from drums or other percussive objects) are often added. It is hard to tell what exactly is being samples at times: voices, distorted guitar or strings, drilling, whirring, scraped metals, often in multiple layers. What I notice after a while is that many of these sounds evoke an assortment of images: industrial, ghost-like, subtle feedback, humming and droning. Although some of the sounds here are alien sounding, I get the feeling that we are on a journey as we listen. The editing and flow from each piece to this next is carefully assembled so that it feels like a soundtrack to an inner film which is being projected on the inside of out eyelids within our our mindscapes. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

FIVE MORE ILK MUSIC DISCS FOR OUR ONGOING SALE:
LoFi (LOHR / FILIPSEN) feat. JEPPS HOJGAARD - "sounds & songs" (Ilk Music 180; Denmark) The debut album from this trio (the duo LoFi - Danish pianist Anders Filipsen and Berlin based Luxemburg drummer Marc Lohr joined by saxophonist Jeppe Højgaard) kicks into high gear right away. From the initial horn blast and 15 seconds of drumming (simply titled “1”) you know there won’t be a wasted note in the next just over 35 minutes. The second track - “Blue For Me” two jumps right in with the full trio soaring into free jazz mode and it flows like they have all tuned into the same wavelength from different parts of the cosmos. All are collectively leading the charge and somehow meshing effortlessly and ego free. Those are some hellacious blues and like the best blues the music feels redemptive.
The rest of the album alternates between shorter, improvised pieces and composed tunes and to these ears flows almost like a live set. The composed pieces tie it all together with the shorter improvisations providing a breather or a chance to clear the air or just have some fun improvising between structures songs. ”This is the result of many years of experimenting with music that encompasses contradictions in the shapes of composition and improvisation. This is a work to be seen as a whole!” (Anders Filipsen) and it really does flow as whole between movements of blasting improv to utter beauty like Filipsen’s take on the Billy Strayhorn/Duke Ellington suites. I’m hearing echoes of Pharaoh Sanders, Cecil Taylor and the free jazz acolytes in the continuum from |John Coltrane to the present. A stunning and fierce debut! - Rich Mudge for DMG

STEFAN PASBORG with ANDERS BANKE / ANDERS FILIPSEN - The Firebirds (ILK Music 235CD; Denmark) The Firebirds trio - reeds player Anders Banke, keyboards player Anders Filipsen and drummer Stefan Pasborg, all are active in many other groups as Ibrahim Electric, Travelling Tribes and New Jungle Orchestra - interpret the works of iconic composers. On its self-titled, debut album (Ilk Music, 2015) the trio created brilliant interpretations of Igor Stravinsky compositions, whose infamous ballet inspired the trio name. Aladdin’s Dream is a tribute to Danish composer Carl Nielsen (1865-1931), known to many Danish as his face appeared on the local one-hundred kroner note. Nielsen was considered as an outsider during his lifetime and his works gained local and international recognition only from the sixties through conductors as Leonard Bernstein. Apparently, Nielsen was suspicious about the relevance of jazz to the Danish culture and asserted that it has “no roots” in Denmark.
The Firebirds challenges Nielsen assertion with great imagination, passion and a healthy sense of humor. The five-part “Alladin Suite” references Oriental and Indian cycles and is interpreted with complex and clever rhythmic shifts, alternating organically between atmospheric funky to blues shuffle, and colored with a refined sense of drama. “Helios Overture”, one of the most famous orchestral works of Nielsen, inspired by his stay in Athens, Greece, sound as if it was written for a group that can encompass prog-like, orchestral sensibilities with a free jazz intense rhythmic attack. The last, most beautiful “Little Suite for Strings”, one of Nielsen earliest works, ends with a majestic, exciting dance, a triumphant conclusion to this impressive tribute. - Eval Hareuveni, FreeJazzBlog.com

KLOKKEBLOMST with ANDERS BANKE / PETER DANSTRUP / ANDERS PROVIS - Klokkeblomst (Ilk Music 205; Denmark) Featuring Anders Banke on sax, Peter Danstrup on bass and Anders Provis on drums. Corresponding to an overall theme 'Songs that could have been Danish' this music is influenced by the songs we sang at school, sometimes not even understanding the deeper meaning of the archaic lyrics who had this poetic touch, sometimes with notes of nationalism, sometimes love and romance. They shaped our musical understanding as well as our native tongue, insight and awareness. Rather than interpreting the old masters like Nielsen and Laub we reflect them. Rather than leaving our cultural heritage to nationalists we challenge it to keep it fresh.

LITTLE RED with ELENA SETIEN / JIMMY NYBORG / JOHANNA BORCHERT / JESPER LOVDAL / PETER BRUUN / JONAS WESTERGAARD - LittleRed BigBang (Ilk Music 165CD; Denmark) Featuring Jimmy Nyborg on trumpet, Jeppe Hojgaard on alto sax, Jesper Lovdal on tenor sax, Kevin Christensen on trombone, Jakob Munck on trombone, Johanna Borchert on piano, Jonas Westergaard on acoustic bass, Peter Bruun on drums and Elena Setien on vocals. The two composers here are the two women involved: Johanna Borchert (lyrics by poet Rainer Maria Rilke) and Elena Setient. As with many of the discs on the Ilk Music label, most of the musicians here can be found as members of Ilk Music CD projects: Jesper Lovdal, Jonas Westergaard & Peter Bruun. Ms. Setient has young, child-like voice which I find to be most charming. The songs also have a playful, positive vibe. The eight piece band here do sound like a small big band at times. Ms. Borchert is an impressive pianist as well as a gifted composer and adds some quirkiness to this music. “Vonwohin” sounds like it is sped up to a madcap frenzy which makes it fun to listen. There is something rather quaint about the music here, like it is from an ancient, fairytale-like time or place. Many of can recall a time when our parents read us a book or story that we ended up loving. I get the same feeling here. - BLG at DMG

IKI with METTE SKOU / SOFIE HOLM / GURO TVEITNES / ANNA MOSE / MARI TVEITO / et al - IKI (Ilk Music 177; Denmark) IKI is/are a nine piece female vocal ensemble from Denmark and this is their debut disc from 2011. This is a completely acappella ensemble with nine voices and no instruments. Since I don’t know about any of these women previously, I can’t tell you anything about their backgrounds, but no matter. There seems to be several layers of vocal lines going on here. One or two lead voices with a a revolving chorus of singers who add different harmonies and/or vocal parts. Although there might be some amount of improv going on here, the varied layers of voices obviously took some time to compose, arrange and execute. There are occasionally found sounds (which sound like water or wind but are just voices), as well as sampled vocal sounds which are used most carefully. The vocals are in English mostly and fragments of words and melodies are used and expanded upon. Although this disc was completely improvised over an entire day, the different vocalist each added parts and arranged sections spontaneously. IKI went on to record eight releases, some EP’s and some full lengths. There are some guest musicians on these other discs like Icelandic guitarist Hilmar Jensson, percussionist Marilyn Mazur and Danish saxist Maria Faust. Still, I dig this disc just as it is with all of the voices being used a variety of ways. Marvelous. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

LOVE with ARTHUR LEE / GARY ROWLES / GEORGE SURANOVICH / FRANK FAYAD - Live In England 1970 (The Swinging Pig TSP 145LP; UK) Limited restock. "Recorded at various locations Feb March 1970. Line up: Arthur Lee, George Suranovich, Gary Rowles and Frank Fayad. This is the line-up that appeared on the last three Love records from the early 1970’s. Lee thrives on complication and contradiction: he performs songs from every Love album (including a particularly caustic 'Bummer in the Summer' from Forever Changes) as a means of acknowledging his past glories as well as his fraught history. Live, this version of Love sounds like a band mustering the conviction to take on the world one more time. But they never did: Lee disbanded the line-up shortly after the tour. Love would barely see the 70s, except as a series of failed reunions."

JOHN ZORN - Hermetic Cartography at the Drawing Center- Feb 7th - May 11th, 2025:
John Zorn’s ‘Hermetic Cartography’ will be accompanied by a series of musical performances curated by Mr. Zorn that will be performed in the exhibition. Performances will be held from 7:30 - 9pm on the first Saturday of each month (March - May, 2025) and will be free and open to the public. The Drawing Center is located at 35 Wooster Street, in Soho in Manhattan, NYC. Website: https://drawingcenter.org
Known predominantly as a groundbreaking figure in New York’s avant-garde and experimental music scenes, John Zorn has long been celebrated for his radical innovations in music. However, his abstract drawings—a private language of symbols and notations—have remained a closely guarded secret. Offering profound insight into Zorn’s creative mind, Hermetic Cartography reveals a new dimension of his artistic practice by showcasing works on paper that span seven decades of his visionary engagement with mark-making, improvisation, and the esoteric.
The exhibition includes a diverse array of Zorn’s visual artworks, graphic scores, dense philosophical notations, abstract poetry and artist books, and not only highlights Zorn’s radical approach to marks on paper but also his unique Theatre of Musical Optics and other experimental projects. By exploring these visual elements, the exhibition provides a new perspective on how Zorn's abstract works intersect with and inform his musical compositions.
