DMG Newsletter for the Week of July 19th, 2024

Walls windows trees, waves coming through
you be in me and I’ll be in you
together in eternity
some kind of ecstasy got a hold on me

Up among the firs where it smells so sweet
or down in the valley where the river used to be
I got my mind on eternity
some kind of ecstasy got a hold on me
and I’m wondering where the lions are...
I’m wondering where the lions are...

Huge orange flying boat rises off a lake,
thousand-year-old petroglyphs doing a double take,
pointing a finger at eternity
I’m sitting in the middle of this ecstasy

Young men marching, helmets shining in the sun,
polished as precise like the brain behind the gun
(should be!) they got me thinking about eternity
some kind of ecstasy got a hold on me
and I’m wondering where the lions are...
I’m wondering where the lions are...

Freighters on the nod on the surface of the bay
One of these days we're going to sail away,
going to sail into eternity
some kind of ecstasy got a hold on me
and I’m wondering where the lions are...
I’m wondering where the lions are...

A young woman (probably in her early 20’s) came to visit at the store last week and was asking about her favorite singer/songwriters like Tim Buckley & Joni Mitchell. Her name is Savannah and John Mori & myself talked to her for more than an hour. I always look forward to it when young folks (no matter what age, actually) and ask about an artist or type of music that they are searching for. I have pretty diverse tastes and can talk at length about a wide variety of musicians. I ended up telling Savannah about my faves like Fred Neil, Richard & Mimi Farina, Ian & Sylvia, Bruce Cockburn, Roy Harper and many others. She had a list which I added several dozen names to. Ever since learning the words to “Blowing in the Wind” and “The Eve of Destruction” as a child, I was long fascinated by the power of the lyrics and music of songs which seem to alter the way we see the world. I recently put together a list of around 120 of my favorite “folk” singers and am working on a compilation of my fave songs from each of these great songwriters. Here’s a list of my current fave songwriters: John Prine, Townes Van Zandt (“Our Mother the Mountain”, incredible!), Bob Dylan, Richard Thompson, Rickie Lee Jones and Bruce Cockburn.
I discovered Canadian folkie Bruce Cockburn in the late 1970’s and have followed him ever since. He is an amazing guitarist with a great voice and often writes political lyrics which often ring true. I’ve caught him live nearly a dozen times and (still) get each of his 30 records whenever they are released. The above song, “Wondering Where the Lions Are” is my favorite of his and every time I hear it, I still smile. I find these couple of lines to be very special, “I got my mind on eternity, some kind of ecstasy got a hold on me”. I still listen to an hour of Live Dead every night before I hit the sack. I dance around, sing along and am still searching for some transcendence or ecstasy. I think that “lions” that Mr. Cockburn is referring to are the fears that we all have of the uncertainty of our futures. Hence, we all are wondering where the lions are. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

THIS WEEK’S FINEST DYNAMITE DISCS BEGIN WITH:

JOHN ZORN // BRIAN MARSELLA / JORGE ROEDER / CHES SMITH - Ballades (Tzadik 9310; USA) This third CD from the dynamic piano trio of Brian Marsella, Jorge Roeder, and Ches Smith is a delightful surprise—and one of Zorn’s greatest achievements. Exploring a wide variety of tempi, moods, and feelings the compositions dive deeply into the parameters of melody, harmony, rhythm, and texture, stretching the ballade format to its limits and beyond. The trio, three essential members of Zorn’s inner circle, performs with passion, imagination, virtuosity, and a telepathic improvisational interplay at the very highest level. A stunning collection of modern Ballades performed by three of the greatest young musicians in the Downtown scene. Essential!

MILES OKAZAKI with MATT MITCHELL / CAROLINE DAVIS / ANNA WEBBER / JON IRABAGON / JACOB GARCHIK / PATRICIA BRENNAN / FAY VICTOR / JEN SHYU / GANAVYA - Miniature America (Cygnus Recordings105; USA) Featuring Miles Okazaki on guitars & conception, Matt Mitchell on piano, Patricia Brennan on vibes, Carline Davis on alto sax, Anna Webber on tenor sax & flute, Jon Irabagon on mezzo-soprano, sopranino & slide saxes, Jacob Garchik on trombone & bass trombone and Fay Victor, Jen Shyu & Ganavya on voices. The concept(s) behind this record is a fascinating one and laid out in the liner notes. After the pandemic, Mr. Okazaki, his son and dog traveled across (Seattle to Brooklyn) in a car with Miles doing the driving. He was looking for a new source of inspiration/direction for his next record and turned to checking out the sculptures of Ken Price, the drawings of Sol Lewitt and words from Immanuel Kant’s ‘Critique of Pure Reason’ for lyrics. The words that were used came from the last lines of poems from ten different poets (Emily Dickinson, Sylvia Plath, Lewis Carroll, etc.). Okazaki wrote a set of instruction pieces to be played by 7 musicians and 3 vocalists, recording the musicians, editing the music and playing guitar along to what he came up with. There are some 22 pieces here and all but three are under 4 minutes.
Commencing with “The Cocktail Party”, there are several layers of vocals speaking in the background with Matt Mitchell’s majestic piano floating on top. “The Funambulist” has acoustic guitar, trombone and the voices (haunting sounds with no words) playing in a thoughtful stripped down counterpoint. Mr. Okazaki likes to compose complex lines/parts which draw from sources like M-Base, math-rock and prog. For this disc he strips things down a bit using the musicians in smaller groupings. For “The Funicular”, there is mostly guitar, trombone and piano playing elegantly together. Mr. Okazaki seemed to have added his guitar after recording the other instruments, listening closely and playing tightly along with whichever instrument is leading the groups. The overall sound of this disc is like a suite of connected pieces with the guitar and voices often at the center of most of the pieces. Since the words are often kept to a minimum, the voices are often used like another instrument, sometimes adding bits of reverb to make the voices float or flow just right. Okazaki has chosen an all-star cast here of Downtown’s best although no one solos at length. One of the things I like about this disc is that it is a cerebral or calming sense at the center, the pieces flow nicely into one another. Miles Okazaki’s guitar sounds semi-acoustic and is warm & enchanting throughout, weaving subdued lines without too many unexpected eruptions. “Chutes and Ladders” sounds like a trio of ghosts chanting  together, taking us to another world for just a one minute detour. One of the best things about this disc is that it sounds like it has created its own sonic world or environment. Once you listen closely, you will be swept up into its Cosmic Flow. A true treasure from the ever engaging guitar hero and conceptualist Miles Okazaki. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

GUITAR SOLOS: VOL. 1 with NELS CLINE / ANTHONY PIROG / MILES OKAZAKI / HENRY KAISER / KURT ROSENWINKEL / LIBERTY ELLMAN / NGUYEN LE / FAREED HAQUE / et al - The Middle of Everywhere (AGS Recordings 007; USA) Featuring 11 guitarists, each playing solo guitar: Fareed Haque, Nguyen Le, Nels Cline, Liberty Ellman, Anupam Shobhakar, Camila Meza, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Anthony Pirog, Cecil Alexander, Miles Okazaki and Henry Kaiser. Aside from being a gifted guitarist, composer and multi-bandleader, Joel Harrison founded the Alternative Guitar Summit in 2010 which features more than a dozen great guitarists performing at an annual concert (Aug 24, 2024), some teaching an annual summer camp and being interviewed for Harrison’s great book, ‘Guitar Talk’ (published in 2022). In the liner notes for this disc, Mr. Harrison notes that there is a challenge to playing solo guitar and that each of these 11 guitarists play solo in their own distinctive way. I know most of the guitarists from their previous work except for two: Camila Meza and Cecil Alexander. It turns out that Ms. Meza does play in a band led by Ryan Keberle.
Fareed Haque is a Chicago-based classical acoustic guitarist who worked with Sting and led a jam-band called Garaj Mahal. I recall hearing and enjoying several of his discs from the 1990’s but not much since then. This disc opens with Mr. Haque’s “Seven Loves”, a nimble, challenging piece for acoustic guitar with Haque working his way balancing two themes in the opening & closing sections and playing some virtuosic embellishments midway. Vietnamese/French guitarist Nguyên Lê is another fine electric guitarist whose discs I used to hear in the 90’s. For his piece here, “Nox”, Mr. Lê layers his guitar(s), using a variety of effects from swirls to some that 60’s like studio sustain sound/tone, the overall sound is quite hypnotic and somewhat eerie. Nels Cline’s “Slab Separations II”, also has several altered layers with different effects being utilized. Mr. Cline, who has been playing professionally for nearly 50 years, is master of using a variety of effects on and with his guitar. Although we do hear some guitar parts at the beginning of this piece, the rest of the piece has some organ-like drones and effective noisy detours as well. Liberty Ellman (longtime member of Henry Threadgill bands), plays a piece by Andrew Hill called “Siete Ocho”. This piece is quite restrained and played on a semi-acoustic guitar most exquisitely. Indian guitarist, Anupam Shobhakar, played on two previous discs led by Joel Harrison, both of which are strong cross-cultural blends. On sis piece here, “Raag Hemant Alap”, there is tambura-like drone underneath while Mr. Shobhakar’s uses a thick sustain drone/tone with an intoxicating sound, bending notes in a similar way to a sitar, the music building similar to the way a raga unfolds and speeding up for some intense waves or cascades of notes. Camila Meza both plays guitar and sings in a soft charming voice, her song samba-like and most sublime. That’s just the first six of the dozen on this disc. Each guitarist here is well worth checking out so dig in…! - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

TONY OXLEY QUINTET with LARRY STABBINS / MANFRED SCHOOF / PAT THOMAS / SIRONE - Angular Apron (Corbett Vs. Dempsey CD110; USA) Featuring Larry Stabbins on soprano & tenor saxes, Manfred Schoof on trumpet & flugelhorn, Pat Thomas on piano & electronics, Sirone on contrabass and Tony Oxley on drums & electronics. Recorded in October of 1992 at Ruhr Jazz Festival in Bochum, Germany. Tony Oxley (6/15/38 - 12/26/2023) was one of the greatest of all British jazz drummers as well as working with electronics and inventing his own percussion. One of his earliest sessions was John McLaughlin’s debut album, ‘Extrapolation’ from 1968 and his playing is incredible on that effort. Mr. Oxley was an early member of Company with Derek Bailey and Evan Parker and recorded two albums as a leader for Columbia UK in 1970 & 1971, both are essential UK experimental jazz. After those two gems, Oxley got involved with electronics and inventing his own percussion. From the 1970’s onwards, Mr. Oxley worked with the cream of European improvisers, led several of his own groups from small ones to his own orchestra and later worked with Cecil Taylor in duos, a great trio with William Parker & Mr. Taylor and a quintet which actually played at the Village Vanguard.
This disc was recorded live in 1992 and features an eclectic line-up with Larry Stabbins saxes & Manfred Schoof on trumpets, Pat Thomas on piano & electronics, Sirone on bass and Tony Oxley on drums & electronics. This is quite a unique line-up of musicians from different scenes/backgrounds. Well-regarded British saxist Larry Stabbins worked with Keith Tippett, Peter Brotzmann and the jazz/pop band Working Week. German trumpeter Manfred Schoof is around the same age as Oxley and has been recording albums since 1967 and was an early member of the Globe Unity Orchestra. British keyboard wiz, Pat Thomas once played in a quartet with Tony Oxley & Derek Bailey. He is one of the most diverse and creative keyboardists to emerge from the British scene and has recorded with dozens of other creative spirits. American contrabass great Sirone was a member of the legendary Revolutionary Ensemble, as well as working with Gato Barbieri, Marion Brown and Cecil Taylor. Aside from John Tchicai, Sirone rarely recorded with European musicians so this is a rare date for him.
This disc is comprised of an entire 65 minute concert. It erupts open with a big splash of well-amplified acoustic piano which is intense and explosive (rather Cecil Taylor-like). The rest of the quintet soon join in with Mr. Oxley’s pushing the temperature higher. Both horns, tenor sax & trumpet come in tightly together in the next section and sound like they are playing a written theme as they blend their tones tightly together. Considering that this concert was recorded in 1992, the overall sound reminds of British avant-jazz from the 1970’s with the effective use of reverb to bring more life to this recording. Sirone’s bass and Oxley’s drumming work extremely well together. Mr. Stabbins, an immensely underrated musician, takes a long soprano solo and he is just incredible, spinning out lines like a serpent spewing molten lava. Considering that this is a live recording, the sound is still strong, warm and well-balanced. Each member of the quintet gets a chance to stretch out so we get some inspired solos from each one. This is a great example of Euro/American free improv at its best! - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

ALVARO TORRES QUARTET with TONY MALABY / MASA KAMAGUCHI / KRESTEN OSGOOD - Live in Barcelona (Fresh Sound New Talent 681; Spain) Featuring Alvaro Torres on piano & compositions, Tony Malaby on tenor sax, Masa Kamaguchi on bass and Kresten Osgood on drums. Recorded at Jamboree in Barcelona, Spain in August of 2023. Spanish-orn pianist Alvaro Torres is currently living in NY and has come to visit us here at the store a handful of times. He has left us with three discs so far, each one with somewhat different personnel. The line-up for this quartet is four musicians from different scenes: Downtowner Tony Malaby (currently teaching in Boston), Japanese-born bassist Masa Kamaguchi currently living in Barcelona and Danish drummer Kresten Osgood, an immensely talented, diverse and ambitious musician who has worked with many jazz elders and creative musicians from around the world.
This disc starts off with an explosive drum solo by Mr. Osgood, a great way to begin with a song called, “The Good Life”. The opening theme is most memorable and it is odd to hear Tony Malaby playing this more modest, straight melody. Malaby still takes a spirited, somewhat outside solo which seems to come naturally to him. Mr. Torres takes a fine, two-handed multi-themed solo here with Mr. Osgood again playing another fine solo before the quartet plays the opening theme again. “Calabosito” starts out quietly and keeps building with an impressive piano solo from Torres in which he places a theme  and then keeps embellishing it with another layer. Throughout this piece, Mr. Osgood swings hard with the quick rhythm ping on the cymbal, pushing the quartet into more turbulent waters. “Echoes” is a righteous, laid back ballad with lush tenor from Mr. Malaby and lush, dreamy piano. I found this piece to be quite touching where time slows down and we sip on some fine wine, our room lit by candlelight. For “You Dig”, Mr. Alvares wrote a challenging song for the sax and piano to play tightly together which they navigate with ease. Malaby takes a long, fiery solo, his tone slightly muffled similar to the way Chris Speed sounds in recent years. The last piece is called “Lullaby” and it is indeed a tasty reprise, somber, sleepy and calm at the center. What I like about this disc is that it has a slow burning, simmering with momentary fireworks from the sax and drums. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

ALVARO TORRES with JOEL ILLERHAG / KRESTEN OSGOOD - Heart is the Most Important Ingredient (Sunnyside SSC 1661; USA) Years of study and travel are blessings not afforded to many. It is precious when the results of these blessings are channeled by an artist into genuine and heartfelt statements. For pianist/composer Álvaro Torres, globetrotting and absorbing musical information from around the world has led him to the root of music’s importance to him, namely emotional expression. Torres’s new recording, Heart Is The Most Important Ingredient, provides a perfect example of the pianist’s affecting art.
Torres began his classical piano study early in his hometown of Madrid, Spain. As a teenager, he discovered jazz and improvisation. After graduating from the Centro Integrado de Música Padre Antonio Soler, Torres moved to Nepal where he studied Hindustani music and taught at the Kathmandu Jazz Conservatory. He then went to Barcelona where he studied at the Conservatori del Liceu, staying in Barcelona for six years.
An exchange program allowed Torres to attend the University of North Texas, and a European Jazz Masters program, through an AIE scholarship, provided a six month stay in Copenhagen, Denmark. Though Torres discovered free improvisation in Barcelona, it was in Copenhagen that he met drummer and scene booster Kresten Osgood. The ever-busy Osgood introduced Torres to an incredibly active and creative improvisation scene and opened the pianist’s eyes to a number of different musical philosophies and practices.
The sound Torres had been trying to cultivate really began to come together in Copenhagen. The pianist had been negotiating his shared interests in classical music, jazz and improvised music. In 2019, Torres released a trio recording, Specious Present, that was a tribute to the music of Paul and Carla Bley, utilizing brief compositional ideas to build improvisations around.
In Copenhagen, Torres recruited Osgood and Swedish bassist/inventor Joel Illerhag to record a collection of loose tunes and improvisations in January 2020. The work that the trio put down shows the evolution of Torres’s music, stylistically and emotionally. Amazed at the quick absorption of his music by the Scandinavian rhythm section, Torres trusted them to provide fresh points of view for his compositions without unnecessary direction.
The recording begins with “Krescendo,” a dedication to Osgood that puts his hard-driving percussion against a layer of impressionistic piano and bass. The warm “Heart” is a patient piece that develops a simple, short melody into a thoughtful play of tones. Osgood’s brash drums introduce the brightly hued “The Good Life,” an Ornette Colemanesque, swinging piece that exudes joy. Illerhag’s resonant pizzicato bass provides the tonal center for the mysterious and spare “Most,” while the bassist’s bow work and Osgood’s off-kilter percussion provide a haunting backdrop for Torres on the fully improvised “Taken.”
“Granted” is a sprightly played solo piano piece by Torres which leads to the elastically metered “Desire,” where textures and intensity shape a dramatic performance. The quietly tumultuous “Departure,” which continually churns and builds, was the first piece the trio recorded. The short, hectic head of “Ingredient” takes its cues from Carla Bley and is a change of pace from some of the moodier improvisational pieces. The recording concludes with “Dreams In Music,” a solo piano piece that plays around with a brief musical idea, inspired by Torres’s own dreams, where he can have full, meaningful conversations using music alone.
Though he is now based in New York City, Álvaro Torres’s time in Copenhagen was foundational in his development as a musician. It provided him with inspiration and fantastic partnerships with Kresten Osgood and Joel Illerhag, which generated his sincere and fantastically played recording, Heart Is The Most Important Ingredient.” Jazz-Jazz.com

RON CAINES / MARTIN ARCHER AXIS with HERVE PEREZ / LAURA COLE / ANTON HUNTER / GUS GARCIDE / JOHNNY HUNTER - Practical Dreamers (Discus 178CD; UK) Featuring Ron Caines on alto & soprano saxes, Martin Archer on bass & b-flat clarinets, percussion, electronics, Herve Perez on laptop & processing, Laura Cole on piano, Anton Hunter on guitar & electronics, Michael Bardon on cello, Gus Garcide on contrabass and Johnny Hunter on drums. UK saxist Ron Caines was once a member of British progressive band called East of Eden (1969-1978, 1989-2005). Multi-instrumentalist & Discus label founder, Martin Archer, put together the Caine/Archer Axis around 2018 and this is their 5th disc.
This disc is a suite of seven electro-acoustic structures composed by Martin Archer, with Herve Perez adding laptop & processing and Ron Caines adding melodies & improv on top. Starting in 1989, Martin Archer, has been running the Discus label and drawing on a wide variety of mostly UK musicians, creating a stable of musicians from across the spectrum (from prog, jazz and new wave bands from the late 1960’s onwards). The only way I know most/all of these names are from previous Discus discs. On “Part 1”, the sax, piano, bass & drums are stripped down and interwoven carefully with subtle electronics or processing added like sly seasoning. Ron Caines plays soprano sax on “Part 2” and is featured playing coy, careful, sly lines over the haunting atmospherics below. Mr. Archer also adds some bass clarinet similar to what Bennie Maupin did on the sessions for ‘Bitches Brew’, growling underneath. Mr. Caines’ soprano and Ms. Cole’s piano sound particularly good together on “Part 3”, the piece being mostly ethereal and quite eerie. On “Part 4”, the pace and density increase with swirling alto sax, piano, electronics, bass and drums, the vibe feels like we are taking off into a higher plain or space flight. Throughout this disc, there is a feeling of having things in flux, the rising and falling waves washing over us in a most organic fashion. “Part 5” is longer than the rest of these pieces and is grounded by Ms. Cole’s elegant piano with a flurry of soprano sax, cello and expanding rhythm team. Ron Caines is the featured player/soloists here and sounds strong and inspired throughout. Another gem from the Discus catalogue. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

MARTIN ARCHER & WALT SHAW - Biyartabiyu (Discus Music 177CD; UK) Featuring Martin Archer on alto, sopranino, tenor & baritone saxes & saxello and Walt Shaw on drums & percussion. Saxist & multi-instrumentalist, Martin Archer, runs the great Discus label which has become even more prolific over the past decade or so. Mr. Archer is a member of several ongoing ensembles, each one quite different in personnel and styles or genres to draw from. UK percussionist Walt Shaw is also a visual artist who paints and does installations, using electronics and amplified objects in his arsenal of sounds. These two musicians have worked together in several projects previously and sound like they are connected. On the first piece, “Daya”, Archer is playing alto sax along with Walt Shaw’s sprawling acoustic percussion. The music is free yet playful and focused, a nice conversation between old friends. Mr. Archer switches to sopranino sax for “Biyu”. This piece is more stripped down when it starts, with both players taking their time to express themselves. Mr. Archer plays tenor sax on “Uku” and his playing is more blustery, the duo have a more free/jazz-like sound here. Mr. Shaw plays around his drum kit here as well as playing some hand percussion. “Hudu” features Archer on bari sax, the duo slowing down a bit to have a more relaxed conversation. Mr. Archer plays a saxello on the last piece, “Biyar”. A saxello (in between a soprano & an alto, soundwise) is a relatively rare sax which was made famous by the late Elton Dean. This duo piece really works well as Archer’s saxello is well-matched by Walt Shaw’s drumming. The saxello has a lighter, quirky, unique sound and Mr. Archer’s playing reminds me of the more playful side of beloved Lol Coxhill, one of the oddest of all British saxists. The balance between these two players is strikingly rich and nuanced and rather melodic at times. There is some obvious camaraderie going on here, some respect and connection to a common goal. Most impressive on several fronts. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

ADRIAN DEMOC // MIROSLAV BEINHAUER - Piano (elsewhere 013; USA) Featuring Miroslav Beinhauer on solo piano playing the music of Adrián Demoč. This music was recorded at Czech Radio Ostrava in November and December of 2023. Since 2020, the elsewhere has released a series of mostly solo piano efforts from a variety of composers known and little-known. I can’t say that I know much about the composer Adrián Demoč, although he does have some eight previous discs on Another Timbre and other lesser-known labels. There are three pieces found on this disc. “A Luca Marenzio II” was composed in 2018 and it is soft, lush with a series of chords being struck over a moderate tempo. Each chord resonates slowly so we get to savor each one. There is a long melody which is being stretched out as each chord is struck. I find this piece to be most soothing, like a solemn church bells ringing slowly in the distance. The second piece is called, “Ma fin est mon commencement” which is from 2019 which means “My end is my beginning”. Again, there is a series of chords being struck with the tempo a bit quicker. The ongoing melody feels brighter and more positive than the first piece. The last piece, “Gebrechlichkeit”, is the longest at nearly 21 minutes long. It means infirmity as in a physical or mental weakness. Again this piece is a series of chords being struck one at a time. The tempo is moderate with less time to savor each chord. What I hear is/are two themes going on simultaneously, one is higher up on the keyboard, one is a bit lower. Each chord contains a note which sounds slightly bent. It is something to get used to over time since that bent note sounds like it is in between tonalities and hence we have to work at the way the slight difference effects us. The elsewhere label often seems to be about the way we listen to or hear certain music, with the importance of the space between each note or chord. Time slows down as we listen and try to figure out the connection between the notes  and the space between and what we get from this balance or blend. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

MAX NAGL - Tokyo 1 - Day Ticket (Rude Noises 39; Austria) Featuring Max Nagl on saxes, clarinet, piano, guitar, drums, stylophone, synth & little instruments. Recorded in Tokyo in February of 2024. Austrian saxist & composer Max Nagl is an old friend who continues to send me/us new discs once or twice a year of varied projects, from solo efforts to large ensemble works. Mr. Nagl lived in New York for a stretch in the 1990’s and performed with a great quartet called the Big Four. Both before and since, Nagl is an important part of the Creative Music Scene in Austria, leading all sorts of ensembles as well as releasing the occasional solo effort. Although is known for his spirited alto sax work, when recording solo, he is more of a multi-instrumentalist. This disc was recorded in a studio in Tokyo with Nagl overdubbing several instruments. “Shinjuku” opens and it is funky instrumental with slamming drums and fat, funky sax. Nagl samples some Japanese voices on “Shinagawa” which is also over a funky groove. Nagl slows down the groove on “Jimbocho”, putting his sax slowly on top. He also adds some noisy sustained guitar soloing powerfully on top. A few of these pieces are solo sax or clarinet with subtle electronics, sometimes and evoking some sleeping spirits. Mr. Nagl plays bari sax on “Eriso”, creating a goofy groove with some Frippish guitar sailing on top. On each of the 15 tracks, Mr. Nagl creates a different beat or groove and each one has some funk or grease inside. Drum set or drum machine? Does it matter? Probably not. This is quite a quirky and unpredictable solo effort which embraces a sense of having fun and not being taken too seriously. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

M. MASHABI AND HIS KELANA RIA ORCHESTRA - Kafilah Nights: Malay-Arabic Variations From 1960s Indonesia (Elevation Records ELE 035CD; Indonesia) The Robert Johnson of Indonesia's Orkes Melayu music finally comes out from the shadows. Between 1961 and 1964, Kelana Ria recorded 48 songs that were spread over four records, Kafilah, Yam El Shamah, Ya Mahmud, and Ya Hamidah, which became the primary sources for this compilation. In the early 1960s, two of the best talents in the Indonesian music scene, songwriter and band leader Adi Karso and Gambus musician Munif Bahasuan teamed up to form Orkes Melayu (Malay Orchestra) Kelana Ria. These four recordings changed the trajectory of Indonesian popular music. "Renungkanlah" has been covered by many countless other musicians in Indonesia and Malaysia and it has become a hit many times over. The song has become a go-to song in karaoke bars in the region, with fans oblivious to who actually wrote this song or who performed it the first time. Or take the song "Ratapan Anak Tiri" ("Lament of a Stepchild"), a song that has traversed national boundaries and has become a universal sad song in the Malay world, turning into a shorthand for melancholia that permeates this archipelago of nations. Another stunner is the melancholia-laden "Kesunyian Jiwa" ("Silence of the Soul"), an operatic tune so majestic that it could open any black and white Kurosawa film from the late 1940s. The songs and the soulful vocal performance belong to Muhamad Mashabi, who despite the popularity of the songs he created is now largely forgotten, whose history was kept alive only in the neighborhood where he grew up in Central Jakarta. With only a short musical career and only nine recorded songs from almost 40 compositions, Mashabi fell by the wayside in the early 1970s, especially with the rise of pop and rock from bands like Koes Plus, Panbers, and God Bless. Yet his songs, inspired by Malay traditional songs but performed in the modern studio setting, lay the foundations for what would become the biggest musical genre in the country, dangdut, especially the kind that was popularized by the self-styled king of the genre, Rhoma Irama.

JOE HARRIOTT QUINTET with SHAKE KEANE / COLERIDGE GOODE / HARRY SOUTH / PAT SMYTHE / BOBBY ORR / PHIL SEAMEN - Free Form & Abstract Revisited (Hat ezz-thetics 2-112; Switzerland) Two essential early 60s release from famed UK saxophonist Joe Harriott, an innovator bringing free jazz concepts to the British audience with his quintet of Shake Kane on trumpet & flugelhorn, Pat Smythe on piano, Coleridge Goode on double bass and Phil Seaman on drums, referencing the new forms of jazz from US artists like Don Cherry and Ornette Coleman.
"Joe Harriott was another of those outstanding unknown/legends of early British out/jazz. When Ornette Coleman's quartet moved to NY in 1960, they changed everyone's perception of what modern jazz could become. Many critics were furious with this change, referring to it as "anti-jazz" along with John Coltrane & Eric Dolphy. At the very same time in 1960, another amazing young alto sax hero from the West Indies but living in London - Joe Harriott put together his legendary quintet - with the same fire, freeing of boundaries and brilliant new approach called "free form" or "abstract!" Harriott's incredible quintet included two other West Indians - Shake Keane on trumpet & flugel and Coleridge Goode on contrabass, plus Pat Smythe on piano and Phil Seamen (one of UK's greatest jazz drummers of all time & teacher to Ginger Baker). 'Abstract' goes even further than the previous album Free Form to burn down the bridges to the past, even freer and even more spirited, although it is from only two years later!" - Abstract "It is hard to believe that 'Free Form' is from 1960 - almost forty years ago! This music is a complete blast, so tight, so quick, so joyous, overwhelming spirits soaring. Both Joe's alto and Shake's trumpet consistently match wits burnin' together, in the tradition of Diz & Bird updated to Ornette & Don Cherry! Many of Harriott's challenging compositions have that Monkish zig-zagging of lines with Ornette's quartet's brain-frying level of intensity! Word is that Joe Harriott had developed his thing independent of Ornette's influence - making this all the more amazing on many levels!" - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

This comes from a friend and STEVE LACY Italian fan, Mauro Stocco:

www.stevelacymemorialscrapbook.org is a recent tribute portal dedicated to Steve Lacy, the great soprano sax genius who passed away twenty years ago, on June 4th, 2004. The website currently features contributions by Alvin Curran, Roberto Ottaviano, Gianni Mimmo, Zlatko Kaučič, Andrea Centazzo, Tino Tracanna, Vincent Lainè, Jason Weiss, and others will follow over time.

After having dedicated many years to collecting records, books and magazines about Steve, having met him several times and organized gigs for him in solo, trio, sextet and with Musica Elettronica Viva, I decided it was the time to create a simple, but heartfelt, tribute.

Steve Lacy was a genius of our time, a sort of Leonardo Da Vinci, capable of interacting with Dixieland, Monk, Ellington, free, Indian music, MEV, Giuseppe Chiari, dance, painting, sculpture, cinema, poetry, Living Theatre, philosophy, Tao, codifying the role of the modern soprano saxophone.

Anyone who feels they have a contribution to make to the site can contact the e-mail address listed.
