DMG Newsletter for August 25th, 2017

As the 50th Anniversary of the Summer of Love
Draws Near, I recall that Hendrix Once sang:
Move Over Rover and Let Jimi Take Over
So Let’s Celebrate By taking those Skeletons Out of Our Closets
Dusting them off, Putting on Our Dancing Shoes…
And forgetting about the Absurdity of Life around Us
The One Thing that Remains Constant is
The Power of Music to Inspire, Heal and Help Bring Us Together

This Week’s Sonic Treasures Feature the Special Sounds of:

Ever since the turn of the millennia, there has been a thriving underground music scene brewing in and around London with dozens of musicians collaborating in several small venues and gallery spaces. Thanks to workshops run by AMM percussionist Eddie Prevost plus elder statesmen like Paul Dunmall, Keith Tippett and Louis Moholo, are all working with a number of younger, up & coming musicians. One of the centers of this ever-growing scene are/is the members of the trio known as IST: Graham H Fell, Mark Wastell and Rhodri Davies. Both Mr. Fell and Mr. Wastell have their own labels: Bruce’s Fingers and Confront, both of which have done a great job of documenting this compelling scene.
Mr. Wastell used to run an independent record store in north London and he still organizes concerts at places like Cafe Oto and elsewhere. Although, Mr. Wastell started off playing mostly cello in IST, he has slowly been adding other instruments to his arsenal: tam tam, shruti box and other odd sound devices. His label Confront and another UK label called Another Timbre, both have been documenting an ever-evolving series of concerts and sessions which often embrace a similar aesthetic of lower case/reductionist/minimal sonic explorations. The New York school composers like John Cage and Morton Feldman seem to cast a long shadow on both of these labels.
Since getting in this impressive 5 CD box set earlier this week, I have been listening to each disc carefully, one at a time and trying to not let anything distract me from my Deep Listening experience. The personnel and instrumentation on each disc is very different although it often sounds like someone is directing the flow. CD 1 features double bass, harp and five laptops. Once I turned the fan off in my kitchen, where I review discs, I started to hear those microscopic, insect-like sounds. The distant whir of electronic static, soft drones, low tones of a bowed bass, rubbed surfaces… The closer I listened, the more ultra-subtle sounds I heard. Wastell’s bowed bass is often at the center here, wheezing, buzzing, expanding and contracting. Considering that there are 7 musicians involved, the music never gets very dense. There is a good deal of spaciousness going on here as if the even the silences are directed. Each one of the five discs here are worthy of serious exploration and deep listening. I keep hearing more subtle layers each time I dive in. The entire box-set is superbly recorded, organized and manufactured with great care. And it does capture an entire SEEN on several levels. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, Downtown Music Gallery

YASUNAO TONE - AI Deviation #1, #2 (Editions Mego 241; Austria) Yasunao Tone: “I have had an idea if I apply the neural network to create my sound work for long time. When I had a performance at Centre Pompidou with Peter Rehberg and other friends I tried to talk about the idea with a French guy from IRCAM. But, he couldn't understand my idea, which by using neural network the sound I create would never have any repetitions. That was 2002 and I had to wait until 2015 when I had a grant from New York State Council on the Arts through ISSUE Project Room, then its director Lawrence Kumpf applied for my new work. The grant finally made possible for making my cherished idea, the neural network piece, reality. I had talked about the idea with Prof. Tony Myatt at Surrey University, UK and he developed the software for the piece with a team included Dr. Paul Modler. At the lab in the University a series of my performances of my MP3 Deviation were captured and used to train Kohonen Neural Networks to develop artificial intelligences that simulate my performances. Hence a birth of new piece AI Deviations. I had a premiere at ISSUE Project Room on June 9th, 2016 and the venue was more than packed and here is the performance of the piece." The entire NPR broadcast is presented here, digitally remastered, with background liners.

GARY BURTON QUARTET With LARRY CORYELL / STEVE SWALLOW / STU MARTIN JIM HALL / CHUCK ISRAELS / LARRY BUNKER - Live at Newport ’67 Something’s Coming! (Jazz It Up 4650890; EEC) Young vibes man, Gary Burton, always seemed to be in the right place at the right time and ahead of his time right from the beginning. In between high school and college (Berklee), Burton moved to Nashville for the summer (1959) and was hired by country/jazz/session guitarist Hank Garland to record an album called ‘Jazz Winds’. Mr. Burton soon worked with Stan Getz ended up recording for RCA. He had three records out by the time he was 20 and still going to college. His third album featured Jim Hall on guitar (another influential/legendary figure) and was called, ’Something’s Coming’. It is included here and has never been released on CD before. Besides getting this bonus album…
What makes this CD so special is the first appearance of a live set with another seminal Gary Burton Quartet from the Newport Jazz Festival on July 1st of 1967. This quartet featured the recently deceased Larry Coryell at the beginning of his music career. Mr. Coryell, who was playing in both rock and jazz bands like the Free Spirits who were combining jazz and rock influences long before the word fusion was coined. Between 1960 and 1970, Gary Burton recorded around a dozen albums for RCA, all worth checking out since his music/bands were always evolving. Sadly, practically none of those albums have been reissued in the US on CD?!? All we can say is shame on RCA! A handful of these albums have been reissued in Europe by those questionable labels like this one. As a musical historian and serious collector, I am glad to finally get an opportunity to hear both of these sessions. Larry Coryell recorded a few albums with Mr. Burton but soon left to pursue his own solo career. Coryell was replaced by Jerry Hahn, another great jazz/rock guitarist who had just recorded two seminal albums with the John Handy Quintet. Bluegrass violinist, Richard Greene (pre-Seatrain), was yet another odd yet fitting choice for Burton’s band. Mr. Burton always guitarists wisely and often at the beginning of their careers. Pat Metheny and Mick Goodrick were next in line for the Burton Group of the early to mid seventies. Even some 40 years later, Mr. Burton had/has Julian Lage in his band. Anyway, pick this disc up if you ant to complete the jigsaw puzzle of modern jazz. - BLG/DMG

THE AGGROVATORS - Aggrovating The Rhythm At Channel One (Jamaican Recordings 067; UK) The Aggrovators were one of Jamaica's finest session bands put together by the hit-maker from Jamaica, Bunny Striker Lee. The group would produce some of the hardest rhythms cut at the legendary Channel 1 studio. These tracks would provide the backbone to songs that were usually voiced over at King Tubby's own studio. These cuts here represent a selection of some of those fine rhythms selected together for the first time. The Aggrovators were a group of reggae musicians that usually featured Carlton "Santa" Davis on drums playing alongside Robbie Shakespeare on bass with other musicians added like Earl "Chinna" Smith on guitar and Tommy McCook, Vin Gordon, and Lennox Brown added for horn arrangements, with keyboard and organ duties normally left to Ansel Collins and Bernard "Touter" Harvey. Jamaican Recordings have compiled some great tracks recorded by this fantastic group of musicians and focused on those cut on Channel 1 studios to give you a feel of what those times were like. Dubs of songs from Johnny Clarke, Delroy Wilson, Paragons, Ossie Scott, Roy Shirley, and Pat Kelly. CD version includes four bonus tracks.

THE PARAGONS - Return (Radiation Roots 316; Italy) Radiation Roots present a reissue of The Paragons' Return, originally released in 1977. One of the most important harmony groups in the entirety of Jamaican music, the Paragons have a long and complicated history. First formed in the ska years by Bob Andy and Tyrone Evans as the duo of Andy And Ronnie, the group soon expanded to a quartet through the addition of Howard Barrett and John Holt, the latter naturally assuming lead duties; following the subsequent departure of Andy, Holt, Evans, and Barrett made the Paragons the quintessential rock steady trio. They had an incredible run of hits for Duke Reid and Coxsone during the mid-to-late '60s, and also issued some self-produced work, before Holt's solo career skyrocketed, leaving the group on the back-burner. Then, in the mid-1970s, the Paragons reformed, cutting material for New York-based labels such as Clocktower and Clintones, which led to this intriguing album, which saw material recorded in Jamaica at Harry J for Bunny Lee mixed with work cut at Bullwackie's studio in the Bronx; along with re-workings of classics such as "Left With A Broken Heart" and "Memories By The Score" is a whole range of new material, dealing with contemporary themes.

LP Only Section:

VERONIQUE VINCENT & AKSAK MABOUL - 16 Visions of Ex-Futur (Crammed Disc 271; Belgium) “Heralded as the next album by Belgian avant-rock combo Aksak Maboul in 1981, this collaboration with The Honeymoon Killers' Véronique Vincent was never completed. The project was 'dropped' at some point but listening now to these fine pop songs written by Vincent and Crammed Discs/Aksak Maboul's founder Marc Hollander, one can't help but wonder why. The liner notes ask 'too pop to be experimental? too quirky for '80s pop?…they probably make a lot more sense now than they did then'. But as reissues of lost classics have become the norm, and these recordings being so close to completion, we definitely could have had both. Alas, it does no good to conjecture when they're here now. Thirty plus years later, these compositions are finally seeing the light of day. Put together from demos and rough mixes recorded at home or Pyramide Studio in Brussels as well as in London and a chalet in the Swiss Alps, the Ex-Futur Album offers a good look, not at what could've been, but at what was and was so close to blossoming into itself. Opener 'Chez Les Aborigènes' sets the tone for the collection – Vincent's breathy voice, pretty melodies that don't always go where you think, lovely changes (think if Stereolab were an 80s chart band), and segueing into a Middle Eastern groove for the outro. 'Afflux De Luxe' is a floating pop dream, reminiscent of Saint Etienne's filmic interludes if they were given a full-on pop makeover. Which brings us to the gorgeous 'Je Pleure Tout Les Temps', a single that should have been. The sound of wandering alone through busy twilight streets, catching moments of transcendence at the chorus. An English version, 'I'm Always Crying', comes a few tracks later. A quite different mix, more back alleys and fire escapes but nonetheless a beautiful melodic chorus. And when Vincent delivers the line 'I'm systematically crying', her choice of rhythm breaks the word up into 'systematically', emphasizing the 'tickle' at odds with the tears. 'Veronika Winken' starts off dark, intending to frighten, as Vincent growls and sharply enunciates the lyrics. Strange pronounced vocal noises carry us through as the music grows poppier, finally culminating in a jubilant 80s calypso update of Yé-Yé. 'My Kind Of Doll', the only song on the record not co-written with Hollander, also sees this kind of stylistic shift from detached minor key verse to sweet major chorus. 'Doll' wrestles with the egocentric desire and expectations of childishly adult playthings. 'Réveillons-Nous' and 'Le Troisième Personnage' feature the kind of blippy synths that fans of 80s pop are bound to love, the former flowing into more island rhythms. All in all these don't quite add up to an album's worth of material and the rest of the CD is rounded out by remixes, variations, dub and live versions. The download comes with an additional three bonus tracks. Including an intense take on 'Veronika Winken', full of more groans, rolled r's, and other mouth sounds, recorded by an unknown fan at "the only Aksak Maboul/Véronique Vincent mini-show at The Kitchen (NYC) as part of the Strange Mutations Festival" in 1986. Funnily enough, the original catalogue number for this was to be cram 014, and 'Chez Les Aborigènes' contains the line - itself a reference to a Charles Aznavour song - "I won't be wearing for 30 years the old, threadbare blue suit". But of course these recordings are new to all but the handful who worked on them first time around; the threads taken up again, revitalised and brought to light to delight. And that suits just fine.” - Aug Stone, TheQuietus.com

AKSAK MABOUL [MARC HOLLANDER/VINCENT KENIS/ et al] - Onze Dances Pour Combattre La Migraine (Crammed Disc 101; Belgium) An absolute cult classic of the 70's RIO (Henry Cow, Slapp Happy, Faust...) movement, held in such high esteem that people like Fred Frith, Chris Cutler and Catherine Jauniaux (who is also on one cut of this 1st album) did not have to be asked twice when asked if they wanted to participate in the follow up album 3 years later - although all involved agree that the first album was even better! All that is, except the creative mastermind behind it, Marc Hollander (also the founder of the Crammed/Made To Measure label), who for many years did not want to re-release it. Anyway I can't do better than to quote the below - they've hit it on the head! "Amidst the restless atmosphere of the 1970s, an LP emerged as if from nowhere that started as if it were a radio broadcast for children. Where did this music come from? From Europe or from far away? Was it a message from the future, that had been forgotten somewhere in the past? The instrumentation consisted of guitar, organ, saxophone, clarinet and violin, but also old-fashioned piano could be heard alongside an accordion, a xylophone or an electronic drum machine. The music was melancholic, sometimes sad, and yet it was refreshing, lively and made its listeners happy. A woman's voice came and went as if blown about by the wind, a singing child, melodies for eternity, and again and again little surprises as if with each piece one were unwrapping a small but precious present." In the spring of 1977, two young Belgian musicians who called themselves Aksak Maboul (aka Marc Hollander & Vincent Kenis) set out to record an album in which they playfully fused and deconstructed all kinds of genres to create their own musical world. Many ingredients came in and out of the Aksak blender: fake jazz, electronics, imaginary African & Balkan music, minimalism (there were even pre-techno aspects such in as Saure Gurke and its characteristic keyboard stab pattern which will mysteriously find its way into many classic Detroit techno tracks some ten years later) and even improv in the best "Downtown" tradition! Onze Danses became a cult album... (oh yeah, the mystery solved: 'Aksak' is a Turkish word designating certain uneven rhythms, and 'Maboul' is French, borrowed from the Arabic, meaning 'mad' "Crazy Rhythms?") "A sum of musical and cultural references which knows no border between countries and civilizations... a spirit inherited from Dadaism and Surrealism." Hell! Talk about all over the map -you even hear moments that sound like Braxton's "Ghost Trance" compositions!" - Manny ‘Lunch’ Maris

MUTANTES - Ao Vivo (Vinilisssimo 544; Spain) Vinilisssimo present a reissue of Mutantes' Ao Vivo, originally released in 1976. Those who fell in love with Os Mutantes after listening to their Tropicália work in the late '60s, embracing both psychedelia and Brazilian music influences, should be aware that only one of the original band members, Sérgio Dias, is responsible for this late album, and when it came out the band's sound had changed enormously after almost ten years since their debut LP was released in 1968. The good news is that Ao Vivo is actually a great progressive rock record and also the first time we can see the name of Os Mutantes printed on the sleeve of a live album. The quality trademark of the band was still there despite the personnel changes over the years and the fade out of the Tropicália movement, which in many cases evolved towards the progressive genre. Ao Vivo was recorded in 1976 during a show at the Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro. Rita Lee and Arnaldo Baptista were not there, but the very talented Paulo de Castro, Rui Motta, and Luciano Alves had joined Dias and delivered a brilliant shot of live rock music with lots of quality keyboard solos and guitar licks. Paulo was at the time a very skillful multi-instrumentalist, so it is not surprising that he was hired as arranger and studio musician for artists such as Gerson Conrad and Zezé Motta on their 1975 LP on Som Livre. This album features 13 new songs and appears to be the last recording of Os Mutantes until the 2006 reunion show in London. An essential addition to any '70s Brazilian music collection. Presented in facsimile artwork and pressed on 180 gram vinyl.

ROBERT AIKI AUBREY LOWE - Levitation Praxis Pt 4 (Demdike Stare DDS 025; UK) Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe's incredible experiments with Harry Bertoia's sound sculptures are here documented on this beautiful new edition for Demdike Stare's DDS imprint, coinciding with his appearance on Semtember 2017's issue of The Wire magazine. Lowe is something of a polymath; having started out as part of math rock outfit 90 Day Men and doom metal trio Om, he progressed to forge his own solo work (often under the Lichens moniker), as well as a whole slew of collaborations, including work with Johann Johannsson on scoring both Arrival (2016) and Sicario (2015), an acclaimed album with Ariel Kalma for RVNG Intl's FRKWYS series, plus active involvement in site-specific video art and sound installations. His most recent work under his own name has seen him release diverse music for Type, Latency, More Than Human, and, of course, DDS who have, with this album, presented what might just be the most beautiful Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe artefact thus far. In 2016, Lowe was commissioned by New York's museum of Arts and Design to contribute to a Harry Bertoia exhibition, which he undertook alongside video director Johann Rashid. He was asked to create sound recordings with Sonambient sculptures; metal rods and gongs that produce highly distinct, resonant sounds when struck, brushed, or touched. Beginning in 1968, Bertoia set up an eighteenth-century stone barn on his property in Barto, Pennsylvania, to house these sculptures and from which he would go on to record works for his highly collectable Sonambient label, as recently documented on Important Records' breathtaking box set (IMPREC 419CD, 2016) and reissue series. Lowe was given full access to the barn, beautifully filmed footage of which can be found on YouTube. Lowe's work with these sculptures is quite unlike anything you might have heard from those original Bertoia recordings. Instead of serendipitous improvisation, Lowe weaves his way through the sculptures on a path that was mapped out in advance, imbuing them with a more "composed" and arranged feel. As well as that familiar and distinct sound palette, he subtly manipulates and feeds in vocal layers that take proceedings into ever more ethereal and haunting dimensions. Mastered and cut by Matt Colton.
