"Brown Shoes Don't Make It"
Written by Frank Zappa,
Recorded by The Mothers of Invention for ‘Absolutely Free’

Brown shoes don't make it
Brown Shoes don't make it
Quit school, why fake it
Brown shoes don't make it

TV dinner by the pool
Watch your brother grow a beard
Got another year of school
You're okay, he's too weird
Be a plummer
He's a bummer
He's a bummer every summer
Be a loyal plastic robot
For a world that doesn't care
That's right

Smile at every ugly
Shine on your shoes and cut your hair

Be a jerk-go to work
Be a jerk-go to work
Be a jerk-go to work
Be a jerk-go to work
Do your job, and do it right
Life's a ball
TV tonight
Do you love it
Do you hate it
There it is
The way you made it

A world of secret hungers
Perverting the men who make your laws
Every desire is hidden away
In a drawer in a desk by a Naugahyde chair
On a rug where they walk and drool
Past the girls in the office

We see in the back
Of the City Hall mind
The dream of a girl about thirteen
Off with her clothes and into a bed
Where she tickles his fancy
All night long

His wife's attending an orchid show
She squealed for a week to get him to go
But back in the bed his teen-age queen
Is rocking and rolling and acting obscene
Baby, baby...
Baby, baby...

And he loves it, he loves it
It curls up his toes
She wipes his fat neck
And it lights up his nose
But he cannot be fooled
Old City Hall Fred
She's nasty, she's nasty
She digs it in bed
That's right

Do it again, ha
And do it some more
Hey, that does it, by golly
And she's nasty for sure
Nasty nasty nasty
Nasty nasty nasty
Only thirteen, and she knows how to nasty

She's a dirty young mind,
Corrupted and corroded
Well she's thirteen today
And I hear she gets loaded

If she were my daughter, I'd...
What would you do, Daddy?
If she were my daughter, I'd...
What would you do, Daddy?
If she were my daughter, I'd...
What would you do, Daddy?

Smother my daughter in chocolate syrup
And strap her on again, oh baby
Smother that girl in chocolate syrup
And strap her on again, oh baby
She's my teen-age baby
She turns me on
I'd like to make her do a nasty
On the White House lawn
Smother my daughter in chocolate syrup
And boogie 'till the cows come home

Time to go home
Madge is on the phone
Got to meet the Gurney's and a dozen gray attorneys
TV dinner by the pool
I'm so glad I finished school
Life is such a ball
I run the world from City Hall

In June of 1967, right before the Summer of Love, I turned 13 and was Bar Mitzvah'd. I became a man according to the Jewish religion and started buy albums rather than the singles that I had collected since 1965. After buying a handful of greatest hit records, I bought a copy of ‘Freak-Out!’ by the Mothers of Invention based on a review I read in Hit Parade magazine and the fact that the cover was even weirder than any of the psychedelic records that were released that year. At first, I wasn’t so sure that I liked that Mothers record, but I kept listening and thinking about the lyrics and liner notes by Frank Zappa. It soon became my favorite record of the year so I was primed to check out ‘Absolutely Free’, the second Mothers album which was released earlier that year. It also took me a while to figure out that second LP as well and it became another fave. I began to understand the way Mr. Zappa viewed our flawed world/society and the way he made fun of nearly every aspect of the way things seemed to be. The name of the Mothers of Invention’s fan club was called United Mutations and Zappa used the terms “freaks” to describe those who question the way things are. This records opens with “Plastic People”, who Mr. Zappa describes as “posers”, fake hipsters, fake hippies, fake patriots, etc.

Suburban Bohemia, my old improv ensemble which as been around since 1976 (with ever-evolving personnel), will be performing a version of “Plastic People” this coming Tuesday (12/21/21) here at DMG at around 8pm with MC BruceLee doing the lead vocal. The above song “Brown Shoes Don’t Make” comes from side two of ‘Absolutely Free’ and it really skewers both politicians and plastic people alike. I always laughed at the line “I'd like to make her do a nasty on the White House lawn.” Was that written 55 years ago with the Fake Prez in mind?!? After all of this time, I still am fascinated by the lyrics, music and production of the original Mothers of Invention albums. If you decide to take chance with any of the original Mothers’ records (1966-1970), please listen to them from the beginning to the end and listen several times before making any judgements. Once they get under your skin, you too will become a “Freak”. United Mutations unite! - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

THIS WEEK’S SONIC TREASURES BEGIN WITH THE ALMIGHTY FELA RANSOME/ANIKULAPO KUTI!!!

FELA KUTI - Fela (Knitting Factory Records 4006-1/Kalamuta Sunrise; USA) “The latest collection, which is due out in December, has been co-curated by Kuti's son and musician Femi Kuti, alongside Coldplay's Chris Martin. It includes full reissues of Why Black Man Dey Suffer (1971), Excuse O (1975), Noise For Vendor Mouth (1975), Kalakuta Show (1976), Ikoyi Blindness (1976), Original Sufferhead (1984) and Overtake Don Overtake Overtake (1989). The set also includes a 20-page booklet featuring previously unpublished photos and in-depth commentaries on each album included within the release and more. 16x24" Poster designed by Nigerian artist Lemi Ghariokwu, the creative force behind 29 of Fela's album covers.”
Practically every Friday, for the past few years here at DMG we have a “Fela Friday” session where we play Fela’s music for an hour or so. The reason for this is simple: we need to lighten the mood and get the employees & customers to jump, dance and smile to the great funky grooves of Fela Ransome Kuti, the true king of AfroBeat! I am a longtime Fela Fan-Addict and have been collecting his many (30 ) albums since the late seventies. I caught Fela once live at the Ritz when it was Downtown in the early eighties and danced, sweat & got down for several hours, my old friend Crazy Christina dancing lie a wild woman and knocking folks down with her ecstatic moves. I have some 30 or so Fela CD’s but only a handful on vinyl. Although the CD’s we play in the store weekly sound pretty good, when I listened to some of the same titles at home on vinyl, wow, it was even better! When I get tired of complaining about our sad current political situation, I put on some Fela (or the Dead or Little Feat) and get down and get funky! So stop complaining for a bit and shake your g*ddamn Booty! - MC BruceLee

SUN RA and HIS ARKESTRA with JOHN GILMORE / MICHAEL RAY / CHARLES DAVIS / HAYES BURNETT / SAMARAI CELESTIAL - Omniverse (Modern Harmonic MHCD-221; UK) Featuring Sun Ra on piano & keyboards, John Gilmore on tenor sax, Michael Ray on trumpet, Charles Davis on baritone sax, Hayes Burnett on bass and Samarai Celestial (Eric Walker) on drums. This long lost gem was recorded in 1979 and released on a very limited Saturn pressing. Also included is a Sun Ra piano solo from the Moers Festival (in Germany) in 1979 and a rare piece from 1977. For me, 1979 was the best live year for the Sun Ra Arkestra that I’ve witnessed. I caught them at Soundscape that year and they played for 6 hours (2 3-hour sets)in one long, cosmic evening!!!
Most of the music here was performed by a sextet version of the Sun Ra Arkestra, which is unusual for Mr. Ra. Plus three of the seven songs are not found on any other Sun Ra recording, making this even more rare. The opener, “The Place of Five Points” features some expressive, bluesy piano by Master Ra. Ra also plays some Monkish piano on “West End of Magic City”, with some righteous, actually tender Trane-like tenor from John Gilmore as well. There is a sublime sense of restraint going on here that we don’t often find on many of the usual further out Sun Ra releases. Trumpeter Michael Ray, who is also a contortionist & member of Kool & the Gang at this time, is in fine form here playing exquisite, lyrical and soulful. Sun Ra is also more laid back than usual and plays some superb, bluesy, elegant & inventive piano. The solo piano version of “Over the Rainbow” is a gem that I’ve heard Mr. Ra play on several occasions, here it sounds wonderful, rich, nuanced, majestic, even astonishing with some totally outside detours. The final piece, “The Sound Mirror”, has one of those slow, hypnotic marching grooves with sly bari sax & flute throbbing together an Sun Ra & June Tyson chanting together about the mirror of the sounds. I sounds like we have entered Dream World, another dimension that we all share with other enlightened mortals, ghosts and gods. So nice to hear a new Sun Ra gem which has no screaming saxes or free/jazz frenzy involved. Mr. Ra, are you still waiting for us?!? - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

BOOTSTRAPPERS with ELLIOTT SHARP / MELVIN GIBBS / DON McKENZIE - Xenolith (Klanggalerie GG 390; Germany) Featuring Elliott Sharp on 6 & 12 string guitars & electronics, Melvin Gibbs on electric bass and Don McKenzie on drums. The Bootstrappers are/were a power trio that Elliott Sharp put together in the late eighties with the Minutemen rhythm team of Mike Watt & George Hurley. That was more of a one-off event, hence they just made the one record. A few years (in 1992), Mr. Sharp organized a different version of the Bootstrappers with the Kotik brothers, sons of Peter Kotik, director of the S.E.M. Ensemble. Mr. Sharp has decided to revive the Bootstrappers name with yet another great rhythm team of Melvin Gibbs (from Harriet Tubman & the Rollins Band) on bass and Don McKenzie (2 great LP-only releases on 577 Records). Mr. Sharp has worked previous with both of there players in different contexts. Ever since the olden days of the original power trios like Cream and the Jimi Hendrix Experience, I’ve been a big fan of this format/sound. Fifty plus years later, I am still intrigued by great power trios. Elliott Sharp, who is an elder like myself, has also checked out his fair share of power trios. Considering Mr. Sharp ands his colleagues have worked in many different formats/genres, this trio doesn’t quite sound like any other one. On “Telentelechy”, the rhythm team hold down slow groove while E# plays those slow, long, distinctive distorted lines, building as he goes, working his way through a variety of distinctive effects. Electric bassist Melvin Gibbs and drummer Don McKenzie work well together, playing that lumbering, tight, intense, power, slowing down and speeding up at times. While the rhythm team plays a moderate tempo on “This Magnetic Moment”, E# keeps altering his guitar tone as he solos, using a howling sustain at times. On “Lo Shu”, the trio calms down for some spacious, eerie, drones and ghost-like sounds. Mr. Sharp’s guitar solo has a solemn Hendrix-like psychish sound while Mr. Gibbs takes his own hypnotic solo. The entire piece evokes a strong, mysterious, dark yet mesmerizing vibe. The final track, “Unkettled”, is my fave since it has a killing imminently memorable bassline and some of Mr. Sharps’ best soloing ever! This is a truly great effort that keeps getting better, it doesn’t need to hit you over the head since the best parts take their time to worm their way into our collective imagination. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

DAN WEISS / MILES OKAZAKI - Music for Drums and Guitar (Cygnus Recordings CR 101; USA) Featuring Miles Okazaki on guitar and Dan Weiss on drums. Both of these Downtown players have been collaborating since 1997 when they were both attending the Manhattan School of Music. They’ve played together in a few different projects, from an earlier duo effort (from 2009) on through a quartet date and a recent trio disc with Ohad Talmor. Another recent trio effort for Ozaki & Weiss is with bassist Trevor Dunn for the Tzadik label. This disc is broken into two halves, one composed by each musician, both parts are suite-like with several numbered sub-sections. “The Memory Palace” was composed by Miles Okazaki. A “memory palace” is a mnemonic device where one can visualize information in an imaginary spatial location in order to recall it at a later time. “The Memory Palace” starts off with the duo playing an odd bent funk sorta groove with Okazaki playing mostly bass notes. Although there is a central repeating note, there is also a longer line which keeps shifting in length. In order to keep things interesting, Mr. Okazaki changes the tone or effects of his guitar in each section, sounding as if there are several different guitarists involved. Miles switches to an acoustic guitar for “Part III”, then processing the guitar with effects in the next section. Dan Weiss is one of the most diverse drummers in the entire Downtown Scene, having studied Indian classical music at length as well as working with an immense amount other well-seasoned musicians with their own diverse agendas. Hence, he keeps altering his approach throughout this disc and often through each piece. Mr. Okazaki collaborated with (M-Base founder) Steve Coleman for many years. This has helped Okazaki to navigate his way through varied complex rhythmic lines. Both Mr. Okazaki and Mr. Weiss have a unique way of working their through a wide range of ever-changing patterns and then going in another direction, yet everything always seems somehow connected on a more organic level like current which runs under the water or through the air and connects fish, animals or birds on a similar wavelength. There are a few songs where the duo slow down, making it easier to follow their trajectory. Both musicians are equally involved with the way things work and flow, there is no leader or accompanying player here. Guitar freaks like myself and many of you will be astonished by much of Miles Okazaki does, he is often brilliant but never seems to show off since he is an integral part of this Perfect Duo. Okazaki overdoes a couple of other guitar parts here and there when he wants to switch directions, always keeping the flow in mind. Whenever I play this disc I forget that it is a duo since it sounds much more full, certain licks locked in before they morph into a different set of quirky patterns. “Part VIII” actually comes close to a more metal-like sound which is not so strange since Mr. Weiss does have his own metal/prog band called Starebaby. The second suite is called “Middlegame” (written by Mr. Weiss) which refers to the fact that both Weiss & Okazaki are middle age and enjoy playing chess. What I find interesting is that the since Mr. Weiss wrote this suite, the drums are often at the center what keeps the pieces together and focused. On each piece, Mr. Weiss a different set of grooves or rhythmic patterns, each one different and compelling. Each piece provides a different challenge for Mr. Okazaki to connect and embellish. Although there are quite a bit of repeating patterns going on, the guitar and/or the drums at times shift their lines in unexpected ways. We can never tell where a line will be bent, extended or shortened. Just when we think we know where the duo will go, they take a detour and end up somewhere else. Absolutely brilliant! - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

OHAD TALMOR TRIO with MILES OKAZAKI / DAN WEISS - Mise en Place (Intakt Records 366; Switzerland) Featuring Ohad Talmor on tenor sax, Miles Okazaki on guitar and Dan Weiss on drums. All songs composed by Ohad Talmor except for two by John Coltrane: “Wise One” and “After the Rain.” Recorded live at SEEDS in Brooklyn in January of 2020. American/Israeli/Swiss saxist & composer, Ohad Talmor, has collaborated with Jazz Elders like Lee Konitz, Steve Swallow & Adam Nussbaum. Mr. Talmor has also led a few of his own bands, most recently the Newsreel Sextet who have a fine disc out on Intakt from last year (2020). For this disc, Mr. Talmor organized a strong trio with Miles Okazaki and Dan Weiss, two other seasoned Downtowners who have been working together for twenty years. Besides being gifted / resourceful musicians, both Mr. Okazaki and Mr. Weiss draw from a wide variety of mentors/influences/collaborators. Mr. Okazaki has been quite prolific recently with three new CD’s in the past month or so which include a duo with Dan Weiss (on Cygnus) and a trio with Weiss and Trevor Dunn (on Tzadik).
“The cry was heard, "nobody said there was going to be math involved!" Sorry kids, the music heard on saxophonist Ohad Talmor's Mise En Place is in fact related to the abstract science of number, quantity, and space, and this is an upper level course on the intricate. Seven of the nine compositions were penned by the French-born, raised-in-Switzerland, Israeli saxophonist now living in Brooklyn.
A student of Lee Konitz and both Hindustani and Brazilian musics, he found two sympathetic partners in guitarist Miles Okazaki, an alumni of Steve Coleman and Five Elements, and drummer Dan Weiss, who has a deep knowledge of Indian Classical music. The mathematics are evident in the complex and odd (to Western ears) time signatures of "Kamali," "Shymal Bose Chakradar," and "Rupak Tukra." The trio's adaption of Indian music into an improvisational context demonstrates the the skill of these talented artists, but the music doesn't trade precision for soul.
The music rocks out on "Back Of The Plane" much like Weiss' heavy metal/prog rock band Starebaby does. And, as they say in TV commercials, "wait there's more." Talmor gives us sly encoded "Pairs," delivered as a most enigmatic ballad, complex yet soulful. His tenor saxophone sound is lavish without being pretentious. This is further evidenced by the trio's covers of Coltrane's "Wise One" and "After The Rain." Both compositions are delivered in a reverential and straightforward manner making for a most luxurious sound.” - Mark Corroto, AllAboutJazz

TONY COE / DANISH RADIO JAZZ ORCHESTRA - Captain Coe’s Famous Racearound (Storyville 1018479; Denmark) Tony Coe plays tenor sax and clarinets and is one of the most revered session musicians to emerge from England starting back in the mid sixties. Although Mr. Coe has played on 100’s of sessions throughout his long career (Henry Mancini Orchestra on the “Pink Panther Theme”), it is his great work with other British giants like Stan Tracey, Johnny Dankworth, Mike Garrick, Michael Gibbs & the London Jazz Composers Orchestra, that really shines. Mr. Coe also enjoys working with other more avant-garde players like Derek Bailey, Peter Brotzmann and the Melody Four. This record was first released in 1996 on LP with Mr. Coe working with the Danish Radio Jazz Orchestra and the 1995 Jazzpar Combo. The guests include Bob Brookmeyer - valve trombone, conducting & 1 composition, David Hazeltine on piano and Steve Argüelles on drums & two compositions. Mr. Coe wrote three pieces here, a standard by Johnny Mercer (“Fools Rush IN”) plus a piece by award-winning jazz composer Maria Schneider. Since I own so few of Mr. Coe’s own records as a leader, I didn’t know what to expect and was pleasantly surprised. What I didn’t realize was that Mr. Coe was the Jazzpar Winner in 1995, one of the most prestigious awards given to a jazz musician and most often to American musicians who will then guest with the Danish Radio Jazz Orchestra.
This disc was recorded live by Radio Denmark in March of 1995. The opening piece is George Gershwin’s “How Long Has This Been Going On?” and Mr. Coe’s tenor playing throughout the song lush, warm, sublime with lovely orchestral backing simmering underneath. Mr. Coe’s original, “Edmundo” has a familiar sounding melody and some exquisite, ever-inventive clarinet playing by Coe and an impressive valve trombone solo by Bob Brookmeyer. “Toy Box” was written by British drummer, Steve Argüelles, and is most a duo with clarinet and skeletal drums. Superb! Mr. Argüelles’ other piece, “Antonia”, has a tabla-like groove but it is played on hand & regular drums. It blends together several cultures seamlessly and reminds me of Joe Harriott’s Indo-Jazz band from the mid-to-late sixties. Another favorite musician/composer of mine is Bob Brookmeyer. His playing here (and conducting) is equally amazing! While listening to their version of the standard, “Fools Rush In”, I wasn’t sure which was better, the tenor solo (by Mr. Coe) or the luscious, tasty sound of the orchestra. Whoa…! Mr. Brookmeyer, who is equally well-respected as a composer and big bandleader, has a great piece here called “Nasty Dance”, an extraordinary piece, a post-third stream work that keeps shifting through different rapids, genres and unpredictable twists. Maria Schneider’s “My Lament” features Mr. Coe on soprano sax and some exquisite arrangements. The final work is the title piece, “Captain’s Coe’s Famous Racearound”, is another highlight with restrained yet hard swinging big band and another phenomenal soprano sax by Mr. Coe. This entire is consistently marvelous! Can’t wait to play it again! - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

KERN HAUG - Shoulders Back (Self Released; USA) The latest CD by LA based polymath Kern Haug is a strikingly inventive and fresh take on synthesizer compositions, wedging into a kaleidoscopic crevice between Esquivel, Wendy Carlos and James Ferraro. Our listening in the store today (12/16/21) happened to start out with Carlos’ soundtrack to “A Clockwork Orange”, and throwing on “Shoulder’s Back” quickly afterwards seemed to draw a ghostly thru-line. These pieces are structured off a decidedly post-minimalist foundation, winding pulse-based accentuations around a pillar of circular melody and static harmony. Many of them feel almost sculptural, like a digital object that you can rotate at leisure to see all the contours. The feeling is pleasant but unsettling, like diving down a youtube rabbit hole, or looking up your old apartment on Google Earth to find unknowing pedestrians frozen in motion. I made an offhand comparison nicknaming these pieces “Switched on Phillip Glass”, which I feel evokes the Wendy Carlos method of ornamentation, and melodic choices of timbre sculpting, more than the deceptively dominant Glass influence. This music certainly shares some of the grandiosity and brightness of pieces like Glassworks, but arguably outdoes much of Glass’ work in terms of melodic daring and catchiness. This is the work of a musician who has absorbed lots of music from all corners, and is combining elements gracefully into deeply organically executed electronic music. The MIDI sounds that compose this whole disc are mixed in such a way that their artificiality is often obscured, simmering in a nostalgic futurism. This summer, a lifetime ago, in that precious window between mass vaccinations and the first wave of the Delta variant, I had the pleasure of meeting Kern at several of our Oliver Coffee series as well as several other outdoor gigs during his visit from LA. He stands out to me as one of the first new out-of-town friends I was able to make through purely real world interactions within the last two years. The warmth, energy and intellectual curiosity I felt from him is apparent in this excellent disc, and I look forward to hearing more! - Frank Meadows for DMG

ENLIGHTENMENT & ACROBAT CD Box-Set Sale:

Over the past decade or so, I have been collecting most of the box-sets from the Enlightenment label. Each set consists of 4-6 CD’s, the cost is generally $18 - $22 each. Pretty inexpensive. There are generally 2 albums per disc, hence the 4 CD sets have at least 8 albums. All of the music was recorded from the early fifties and to the early sixties. The folks who manufacture these discs have found a way to push past the 74 minute max that most CD’s have to deal with, some discs are upwards of 81 minutes long and they still don’t skip!?! I’ve acquired most or all of the below boxes and this is great way to check out this era of modern jazz. Many of the albums are long out-of-print and some have never been reissued before. If you want to read a blurb about any of these, you can go to the DMG database: https://www.downtownmusicgallery.com/search.php
