This Week’s Goodies Start with This Great Disc:

BURNT SUGAR THE ARKESTRA CHAMBER with GREG ‘IRONMAN’ TATE / LEWIS ‘FLIP’ BARNES / AVRAM FEFER / PAUL HENDERSON / BEN TYREE / ANDRE LASSALLE / JARED MICHAEL NICKERSON / et al - Angels Over Oakanda (True Groid; Earth) It has several around 4 years since the last release of new music was dropped by our good friends, Burnt Sugar. Considering that has been more than 20 years since Greg -Ironman’ Tate organized this massive, ever-evolving, beyond categories large ensemble, the Burnt Sugar Arkestra has delivered a dozen wonderful discs (1, 2 & 3 CD sets), each one a gem blending the best of many worlds: funk, jazz, rock, R & B, fusion, prog, hip-hop, psych and much more. Plus spirited collaborations with Butch Morris and Melvin van Peebles. Plus, not so strangely enough, their new one sounds nothing like anything they’ve done previously.
Over those two decades the personnel has also evolved from gig to gig, disc to disc. There are, of course, a handful of regulars: Greg Tate, Jared M. Nickerson, Avram Fefer, Paula Henderson, Ben Tyree, Satch Hoyt and Andre Lassalle. ‘Angels Over Oakanda’ is a four song suite and Oakanda refers to a section in the Bay Area (Oakland) where Black Culture is appreciated and nurtured. The title track is long and winding and has an infectious, laid-back, funky, dream-like groove. Five horns, alto, tenor & bari saxes, flute & trumpet , all all swirling together with several guitars, keyboards and percussion all creating a cosmic kaleidoscope of rainbow colors. That groove is most infectious, slamming, sort of Electric Miles for the 21st Century. So good, you don’t want it to end! One of the things that stands out here is el bassist Jared M Nickerson, whose bass is at the center the swirling storm throughout this entire endeavor. On “Repatriation-of-the-Midnight-Moors”, his bass sounds sped up and is even more astonishing! The groove here is right out of drum ’n bass, sly, phat and center to make you want to shake your booty! When I played this piece at store on Monday (8/30/21), a bunch of multi-colored folks all started to dance! John M & myself just had to join in, so we did just that. Reeds wiz, Satch Hoyt plays some superfine flute throughout this piece. Another great thing about this disc is how well it is produced: totally awesome! On “Oakland Overdrive”, the band really takes off with some superb electric piano, furious electric bass and layers of percussion. Plus the horns are well-produced with some of that seventies, swirling reverb that many of us old-timers recall with deep fondness. The final song is a remix of “Oakanda Overdrive” with Lisala Beatty’s immensely enchanting voice(s) on top! This is the best feel-good record of the year, both your booty and your mind will feel better after you get down to it! - MC BruceLee from DMG says so

PAUL BERNER & MICHAEL MOORE - Amulet (Ramboy #39; Netherlands) “In the early ‘70s, Chick Corea and Gary Burton made a duet record entitled Crystal Silence. With just piano and vibraphone, they bet the farm on intimacy and designed a template for contemplative jazz duos. Almost a decade ago, bassist Skúli Sverrisson and saxophonist Óskar Guðjónsson cut a triumph of the approach, The Box Tree. Its artistry was imposing, but it was the music’s hushed nature that centered the program. Mildly romantic, utterly calm, the interplay glistened. Bassist Paul Berner and clarinetist Michael Moore accomplish something similar with Amulet. These duets are the epitome of refinement, barring all things extraneous. They leave room only for melody, an aside or two, and the chance to absorb the natural beauty of their instruments. Expat Moore, a boomer who has lived in Amsterdam long enough to be considered a veteran of the city’s creative improvising cohort, is a key member of the esteemed ICP Orchestra; he has also recorded a wealth of original albums (don’t miss the most recent by his Fragile Quartet), and, with Jewels and Binoculars, two CDs of Bob Dylan gems. His clarinet work can be as elaborate as it is inviting, but here he plays to one of his strengths: simplicity. Through a curt series of songs, one of our most engaging clarinetists invests in consonance and nods to pith. Bassist Berner, another Netherlands transplant of a certain age, is known for his agility and poise. His rapport with Moore is obvious. Through Louis Armstrong’s “Home,” Nat Cole’s “Answer Me, My Love” and Joni Mitchell’s “Night Ride Home,” a genteel spirit dominates as the exchanges play out. To steal descriptors from each of the participant’s individual liner notes, you can call this one a “heartfelt dialogue.” - Jim Macnie’s Music Blog
2 CD Set $18 [Release date is October 1st]

PERCY JONES / ALEX SKOLNICK / KENNY GROHOWSKI / TIM MOTZER - Pakt (Moonjune MJR116; USA) Four monsters of the musical midway team up for some of the most riveting ‘instant compositions’ (née, improvisations) you’re likely to encounter this year. The pedigree of each individual in PAKT (named for the first letter in each performer’s name) is beyond reproach: Percy Jones is the longtime anchor & bassist for fusion icons Brand X, and a member of outfits Tunnels and Vic Stevens’ Mistaken Identities; guitarist Alex Skolnick fronted thrash metal band Testament, as well as being part of fusion combo Attention Deficit and lately working with Jane Getter; drummer Kenny Grohowski has worked with Brand X, and in a trio with fellow PAKT member Tim Motzer and Markus Reuter; and guitarist Motzer, besides being owner/operator of the 1k label, has added his multitudinous charms to recordings by Ursula Rucker, Burnt Friedmann, Jaki Liebezeit, David Sylvian, and numerous guitar/electronic interfaces under both his given name and a host of aliases. The chemistry between these four participants is obvious, their near-telepathic urgency palpable, the results never less than thrilling. Spread over two discs, each is indexed with brilliantly resonant titles, but the entirety of each flows serpent-like as one unified mass of slippery, elusive, always-surprising sound. Disc One, The Unsilence, is anything but. Though beginning with a tentative series of dueling, Fripp/Summers-esque guitars that chime and sweep across the stereofield, anchored by Jones’s rubbery bass pulses and Grohowski’s spacey cymbal relish, things soon come to a boil, both Skolnick and Motzer letting loose fiery licks that spurt about the intensely energized sound-stage. Jones and Grohowski supply the glue that binds the whole enterprise together, the galvanic power that is their rhythm section a big lumbering beast reincarnating nothing less than the ghost of 70s improv era King Crimson. Disc Two, nicked The Sacred Ladder, accomplishes a similar feat of strength. Forget the fact that these four improvisational shamans never played together; the music on display here might well have been made by veterans holding court for decades. As Motzer’s beautifully sculpted atmospherics reach dizzying heights, Skolnick works the room with delicate finesse before exploding with a volcanic gush, Grohowski mining a seemingly endless percussive well of irruptive tics, tacs, and tonalities, while Jones channels everyone from Jonas Hellborg, Hugh Hopper, and John Wetton as he expertly underlines his mates’ kaleidoscopic array, laying down a hardened firmament here, grinding out woofer-shaking crescendos there. In an already distinctive year stuffed with any number of stunning recordings, this one’s well ahead of the pack. On this one, snooze and you lose. - Darren Bergstein, DMG

MORE GEMS FROM THE WONDERFUL NO BUSINESS LABEL:

JOEL FUTTERMAN - “Creation Series” (NoBusiness NBCD 147-151; Lithuania) “Joel Futterman’s creative powers and facility remain undimmed, but assessing the many recent entries in his corpus sheds even more light on the importance of these five discs as a benchmark on his journey. Whatever path is taken through these connected but independent album-length statements, each transition is like a breath, allowing interpretive possibility and the light of a positive and nurturing creativity to imbue a world right now in desperate need of it.” - Marc Medwin
5 CD Set $45 [Limited Edition of 400]

SZILARD MEZEI TUBASS QUINTET - Rested Turquoise (NoBusiness 142; Lithuania) Featuring Ervin Malina, Erno Hock, Zoltan Csanyi & Szialrd Mezei on contrabasses and Kornel Papista on tuba. I’ve been a big fan of Serbian composer/violinist Szilard Mezei since first hearing his music in the mid-aughts. His many discs run the gamut from solo discs to large ensembles plus who would’ve thought they Mr. Mezei could & would be involved in nearly releases so far. Aside from a few collaborations with Michael Jefry Stevens, Jon Hemmersam & Samo Salamon, Mezei has worked with mostly other musicians from Serbia or Hungry. Another surprise is that practically every disc that Mezei has been involved with has different personnel and each & every disc of his I’ve heard & reviewed is well worth checking out.
It have been around 2 years since we’ve heard something new from Mezei and this disc is unlike any other disc that I can think of due to the instrumentation: 4 contrabasses and a tuba, all low end sound range. It turns out that this is the second disc with Tubass Quintet and Mezei has also composed all of the music here. Since all five members of this quintet are playing their own low-end sounds, Mezei has worked hard to give member some challenging charts to work through. Often just one bass and/or the tuba will play that hypnotic, throbbing bassline while the others play tight lines around the central bassist.
I like the way Mezei often strips things down for tight, inventive ensemble passages. Nothing is very busy or too free. The tuba, which used to be at the center of dixieland ensembles upwards of a century ago, is often the central figure here as well, often playing some impressive, pumping bass-lines. As always, Mezei is still filled with surprises as certain sections here erupt into short frenzied outbursts before submerging back into more restrained waters. With four basses and a tuba, Mezei often alters the combinations: two players create drones while the others pluck or bow their own contrapuntal lines. Most of the time I just concentrate of the written or focused passages rather than the odd instrumentation. Considering that this disc is some 79 minutes long, I was amazed that I found it consistently fascinating. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

MOTOTERU TAKAGI / SUSUMU KONGO / NAO TAKEUCHI / SHOTA KOYAMA - Live at Little John, Yokhama 1999 (NoBusiness 144; Lithuania) Personnel: Mototeru Takagi on tenor sax, Susumu Kongo on alto sax, flute & bass clarinet, Nao Takeuchi on tenor sax, flute & bass clarinet and Shota Koyama on drums. There has long been an underground of Japanese Creative Music which has drawn influence from free jazz, psych, prog, noise and electronic musics. Thanks to DIW, Chap Chap, Doubt, PSF and dozens of smaller labels for documenting several ongoing scenes. Aside from the legendary elders like: Masahiko Togashi, Kaoru Abe, Masayuki Takanayagi, Haino Keiji and Sabu Toyozumi, there are many others whose careers stretch back over long periods like Kozutoki Umezu, Akira Sakata, Otomo Yoshihide, Uchihashi Kazukhisa, Itaru Oki, Satoko Fujii & Natsuki Tamura. Over the last few years, the Lithuanian-based NoBusiness label has also been documenting this ever-evolving scene.
The only member of this quartet that I’ve known previously is Mototeru Takagi who has worked with Derek Bailey, Milford Graves and Masahiko Togashi. Turns out that Nao Takeuchi has also worked with another legendary figure: Seigen Ono. Plus drummer Shota Koyama worked with Aki Takase (pianist wife of Alex von Schlipppenbach) & Sun Bae Choi. This disc was recorded live at Little John in Yokohama Japan in September of 1999. The instrumentation here is three reeds and a drummer. The sound/production is superb. The opening track is epic length at 40 minutes and it starts with the majestic sound of three saxes or bass clarinets playing their lines in a circular, solemn fashion. The drums also come in slowly as the quartet lays back, spinning their lines in slow motion at first. Although this music sounds obviously free, all members are well-connected and take their time to converse into a heated dialogue. When free music is played with this sort of restraint, it makes it easier to swallow. This disc is long and winds its way through many twists and turns. For those of you who appreciate the magic of Free music at it best, this disc is for you, the dedicated music listener. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

TOTAL MUSIC ASSOCIATION - Walpurgisnacht (NoBusiness 145; Lithuania) This disc features two sessions, a seven piece German avant/jazz ensemble recorded in July of 1971 and three of the members recorded 16 years later in July of 1988. The personnel includes Hans-Jorg Hussong on bari & soprano saxes & compositions, Wilfried Eichorn on bass clarinet & tenor sax, Andreas Boje on trombone, Erich Schroder on viola, Helmut Zimmer on piano, Matthias Boje on double bass and Rudi Theilmann on drums. The wonderful FMP label (Free Musik Productions) did a great job of documenting the German Free Music Scene from the early 1970’s onwards. No doubt we all know the bigger names like Peter Brotzmann, Alex von Schlippenbach, Peter Kowald, Fred Van Hove, Hans Reichel, as well as other musicians from neighboring countries, the UK & the US, if they were collaborating with their German brethren. Aside from those bigger names, there were also a large number of lesser recognized players who are/were worthy of larger recognition: Rudiger Carl, Gunter Christmann, Ulrich Gumpert, Sven-Ake Johansson and many others. Occasional a session will be released of a musician or group with whom I know little of nothing about previously. Like this one.
The septet session here, which makes up 2/3rds of this disc features some relatively obscure musicians. The only name here that the DMG listed previously is trombonist Andreas Boje, who is a member of the Berlin Jazz Workshop Orchestra and can be found on three early disc from FMP. The name Total Music Association refers to a series of avant-garde art exhibitions and music happenings which took place in Heidelberg, Germany in the early 1970’s. Hans-Jorg Hussong wrote all the music for the septet session here and also plays in the trio some 16 years later for an improvised session. The septet session is a studio effort and was released as an obscure private release way back when. “Walpurgisnacht” opens this disc with a powerful, focused yet free-sounding, superbly recorded happening, Euro-Free/Jazz at its best. The writing here is consistently fascinating. Several layers are often criss-crossing, with tight-knit interaction going on simultaneously. As one person solos, another layer (horns, strings & piano) will erupt with fragments interspersed amongst different segments of the septet. The production is also well-balanced throughout, recalling some of the better sounding Euro/Free Music dates from the same era (like Keith Tippett’s ‘Dedicated to You But You weren’t Listening’ or any of the Brotherhood of Breath studio dates). Considering that most of us know so little about any of the members of the septet, I must admit that this is a masterwork of progressive jazz! - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

MAKO SICA / HAMID DRAKE Featuring TATSU AOKI & THYMME JONES - Ourania (Feeding Tube Records 592; USA) "Fantastic studio recording, caught by Taylor Hales at Chicago's legendary Electrical Audio, documenting the first full meeting of all the players on this album. Mako Sica, at this point in time revolve around the core duo of Przemyslaw Krys Drazek (electric trumpet, mandolin, electric guitar) and Brent Fuscaldo (vocals, electric bass, harmonica, thumb piano, gong, percussion). For this session, these two are joined once again by Chicago's always-revelatory percussionist, Hamid Drake, with whom they have previously recorded Ronda (FTR 409LP) and Balancing Tear (FTR 513LP). In addition, Ourania features the upright bass and shamisen of Tasu Aoki (Drake's longtime partner in Fred Anderson's trio). Also included in the roster is Thymme Jones, the leader of Chicago's epic Cheer-Accident (among many other roles), and a dab hand at everything from balloon to grand piano. The basic idea for the album was to continue building on Mako Sica's recorded collaborations with Drake, and to do so in as spontaneous as setting as possible. It would be hard to say they didn't succeed like crazy. From a two-hour session, the quintet emerged with 90 minutes of finished material, selections of which are presented on Ourania (a name stemming from Greek mythology, attached to the Muse who was the Goddess of Astronomy). The three long tracks on the album are all as stunning as they are different. 'Rain' begins with strings and keys and Brent's vocals accented by Hamid's drums. Thymme comes in with an outlined piano presence recalling Necks' Chris Abrams, and the burble of instrumental interplay makes me think of Josh Abrams' Natural Information Society intersecting with the Sun City Girls at their most melodious. Have twangy guitar will travel, overlaid with Miles-via-Stanko trumpet clouds. 'Gasping for Breath' is a term taken from Janusz Anderman's book Poland Under Black Light. It refers to the Solidarity movement but also is an apt reference to the current problems America faces and the tragic loss of George Floyd. Tatsu's shamisen starts things with a plucked groove that expands quickly. Layers of vocals play words against non-words, while the pulse thickens. topped with slinky bass/trumpet dialogue whose bent and fried notes hint at don cherry's most worldly smears. 'Ourania (edit)' is a short teaser from a much longer piece. Beginning with vocals start that may or may not be words, everything comes together like a snowball creating an avalanche. Stately piano figures, sizzling percussion, guitar skeletons, sloughs of trumpet and all else, combine into a slowly whirling ghost tornado that disappears into you head. And that's it -- Ourania. As fresh a slap of freedom as you'll feel this year. Dig it." - Byron Coley, 2021

These come from a UK trumpeter & composer named CHRIS DOWDING:

I am a trumpeter and workshop leader based in Norwich, UK, and I have just finished this subscription project of a 'Black Lives Matter' project - a collaboration with an artist here in Norwich, Laure Van Minden.

I've made two tracks each month for the last year, and Laure has responded with artwork. Each track is a playing of the name of someone who has died or been attacked in relation to the BLM movement, using an alphabet system to make a melody from each name, surrounded by loops and electronics.

The project is here: https://chrisdowdinglaurevanminden.bandcamp.com/subscribe

Here are a couple of individual tracks:

'Breonna Taylor' -
https://chrisdowdinglaurevanminden.bandcamp.com/album/breonna-taylor

'Trayvon Martin' -
https://chrisdowdinglaurevanminden.bandcamp.com/album/trayvon-martin

We'll be collecting all 24 tracks on a double cassette album available in November, and we've got a few live performances of the project lined up, including the album launch at Cafe Oto, London.

b) I also thought you might enjoy this new octet project, called holding hands, which I'm co-leading with the Norwich-based saxophonist Rob Milne. We made this EP during lockdown:

https://holdinghandsuk.bandcamp.com/album/another-black-death-ep

The longer piece, 'another black death', was written at the time of the death of George Floyd, and actually I'm working on an arrangement of one of the BLM subscription tracks, for the octet, so there's a connection...

c) I also have a group called hymn, also based here in Norwich, and we released this album on Mark Wastell's Confront Recordings label (it sold out - there might be some CDs left with SquidCo). I thought you might enjoy it: https://thehymnal.bandcamp.com/album/silence-then-birds
