EVAN PARKER ELECTRO-ACOUSTIC ENSEMBLE with BARRY GUY / PHIL WACHSMANN / SAINKO NAMCHYLAK / WALTER PRATI / MARCO VECCHI / PAUL LYTTON - Fixing the Fluctuating Ideas (Victo 133; Canada) Featuring Evan Parker on tenor & soprano saxes, Sainko Namchylak on vocals, Phil Wachsmann on violin & electronics, Barry Guy on contrabass, Paul Lytton on drums & electronics, Walter Pratti on live electronics and Marco Vecchi on live electronics. “The FIMAV performance is an extraordinary recording, an aural opportunity to hear the Ensemble exploring at length, stretching the contemporaneous studio documentation, but even with the Ensemble’s brilliant and transformative history, Sainkho Namchylak’s spontaneous addition to Fixing is unique. Namchylak’s intensity transcends the metaphoric. This performance is not folkloric. It is folklore. It is not shamanic. It is shamanism. The ElectroAcoustic Ensemble is one of the most significant events in the humanization of electronic music, in making it mobile and spontaneously responsive. Fluctuating, by the Ensemble itself, is more than a valuable document, it’s a major revelatory work.” - Stuart Broomer, February 202

THE CHADBOURNE / GONZALEZ COLLUSION - Irresponsible Rock’n Roll Shenanigans (CIA Records 024; USA) Featuring Eugene Chadbourne on vocals, banjo & electric guitar, Aaron Gonzalez on stand-up bass & bass guitar and Stefan Gonzalez on drums. Recorded live at Shoeshine Charlie's in Houston, Texas in April of 2019. This trio makes perfect sense, all outlaws with stunning music reps. Dr. Eugene Chadbourne you no doubt well know, an original Downtown legend now based in North Carolina. The amazing Gonzalez brothers, Aaron & Stefan, are longtime members of Yells at Eels with their father, the great trumpeter, Dennis Gonzalez. This live set was recorded in Houston Texas where the Gonzalez brothers live and it is filled with all well-selective covers by Capt. Beefheart, Roscoe Mitchell, early Pink Floyd, the Mothers of Invention, Eddie Cochran and one lone original by EC. This disc well recorded. laid back and a righteous blend of American music pioneers. Dr. Chadbourne is a senior member of the original Downtown Scene along with John Zorn, Wayne Horvitz and Elliott Sharp. As such, he writes his own kinda talking blues with stream-of-consciousness lyrics. His one original here, "Saga of the Creeks" is a calm yet illuminating stream of connected images from across history, genre and mythology. Thing change drastically midstream when Dr. Chadbourne plugs in his electric guitar for Roscoe Mitchell's "Nonaah", a tour-de-force of ball-blistering cosmic, psych, free, freakdom. The trio takes the main riff and jams the hell out of it like an electric trio (Shockabilly perhaps?) blasting off for Kingdom Come. The Gonzalez brothers who I met when they were still teenagers, are the supreme jazz/rock/avant/noise rhythm section and can go anywhere and do anything you lay out for them. The trio go for the gusto when they launch in Pink Floyd's "Lucifer Sam", burnin' it down and rocking harder than hell! Anyone who has witnessed the majesty/insanity of Shockabilly (Chadbourne's early power trio from the 1980's), knows that Eugene has a tendency to flip the switch and play an-over-the-top guitar solo that has just as much in common with John Coltrane as Frank Zappa. Speaking of legendary freaks, the most awesome cover here comes from the very first record from the Mothers of Invention, 'Freak Out!'. The song itself, "Who Are the Brain Police?", was (and still is) perhaps the weirdest, most harrowing, most apt description of political fear. Although this version starts out relaxed, it captures that nightmarish vibe just right. "What would you do if the people you knew, were the plastic that melted and the chromium too?" Well....?!?! This disc & set ends with another classic of teenage angst, "Summertime Blues". Originally done by rockabilly singer Eddie Cochran and later covered by Blue Cheer (another scary, over-the-top power trio). This version is closer to the BC version and it sounds like Chadbourne/Gonzalez Coalition are about to erupt and that they do. So nice to hear the great Doc Chadbourne and Company taking us higher and mightier than ever! - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

THE CHADBOURNES with EUGENE CHADBOURNE / JOHN ZORN / TOM CORA / MARK KRAMER / DAVID LICHT - And I Turned Out to Be... (Chadula; USA) The Chadbournes featured Eugene Chadbourne on guitar & voice, John Zorn on soprano & alto sax & B-flat clarinet, Tom Cora on cello, Mark Kramer on cheap organ & tapes, and David Licht on drums. Recorded on May 4 of 1981 at Calhoun's in Cincinnati, Ohio. Although they look like an early Downtown supergroup on paper, this version of the Chadbournes were pretty short-lived. One year, more or less. I can remember only one gig in NY, at the old Kitchen which was later released as a 2-LP set. Plus there is also a great studio album with this line-up called 'There'll Be No Tears Tonight'. Both are long-gone, however Dr. Chadbourne has been locating some old rarities. This one is from drummer David Licht, who was in Shockabilly and the Klezmatics. From what I recall Mr. Zorn and Mr. Cora split from this band pretty quickly, word is that they weren't too keen on playing some of the more rock oriented elements of this band. Although it is a bit low-key, the early Downtown Magic is there in droves. The band goes from over-the-top, furiously paced at times, rock moments to. The band is way more diverse than any 1 or 2 pigeonhole terms. There is a balance of psychedelics guitar licks & effects, distinctive extended technique, Downtown Free noise. There are some incredible criss-crossing combinations: crazed amplified cello / noise guitar / wacky sax trading intensely. There are a handful of covers here which are deconstructed / blown up like two Beatles songs, "It's Your Birthday" and "Octopus' Garden' w/ hilariously cool Zorn alto solo! Doc Chadbourne sounds like he is on speed on occasion, the tempo increasing to some daredevil speed. Later into a lid-back version of "Crazy" by Willie Nelson. Towards the end, the is some strong, spirited trading between the Chad on guitar & voice, Zorn on games calls & mouthpieces (yes!) and Cora on extended cello wackiness. Here is what I find most interesting about this disc/band: This project shows how quickly the Downtown Scene has evolved to the point where several different styles/genres have been combined into a completely new thing (monster?!?). It took some time for the rest of Creative Music Listeners to learn to appreciate it. According to Doc Chad, this is the first of several live recordings from the Chadbournes. Can’t wait for the next one. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

SATOKO FUJII - Hazuki - Solo Piano (Libra 201-063; Japan) Featuring Satoko Fujii on solo piano recorded in her home in Kobe City, Japan in August of 2020. If you haven’t already seen the is article on Satoko Fujii in the New York Times from last week, then by all means check it out: https://www.nytimes.com/2021/03/17/arts/music/satoko-fujii.html. The Times writer said that Ms. Fujii is perhaps the most prolific pianist currently working,as far as recordings go. As a longtime fan and friend of Ms. Fujii’s, I have been saying the same thing for years since it is no doubt pretty accurate. Ms. Fujii talks about drawing inspiration from the audience at performances and that when she records with no audience, she has to dig deeper to meet her own standards. She mentions how the quarantine affected her, being stuck inside and having to deal with even more reflection than usual. In the liner notes, Ms. Fujji talks about the advantages of recording at home in her own make-shift studio and taking her time with each piece: experimenting, rewriting and redoing each piece at whatever pace she wanted without the pressure of being in a studio.
Ms. Fujii has been playing inside the piano for a while so the first sound we hear is her plucking the strings, spacious and filled with suspense. The overall sound is superb, larger than life, warm, immense. She writes: “I hear it as the sound of something we can’t see creeping up on us”. She is referring to both the pandemic and the haunting mood of the song. The second piece is called, “Quarantined” and it is somewhat overwhelming, the same feeling many of us have had in dealing with the pandemic: the loss of lives and the fear of our own mortality. The fourth piece is called “Hoffen” which is “hope” in German. Over the past year, one of the things that I have been thinking of that no matter how bad things seem, we still have to rise above and find hope or faith of some sort. Although this piece starts out stark, it keeps expanding and ascending higher, inspiring us to hang on to the good things which make life better. “Ernesto” is dedicated to Cuban revolutionary Che Guevara, whose biography Ms. Fujii was reading when she wrote this piece. This piece is dense and powerful, yet somehow it ends with a lighter part which feels somehow uplifting. “Expanding” is the only older song here and Ms. Fujii notes that is what is based on limiting the number of tones she uses. It is still powerful and intense nonetheless with a strong balance of darker and lighter parts. As if often the case, Ms. Fujii does a fine job inspiring us by showing the heart and soul that is at the center of each piece here. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

SCOTT ROBINSON - Solipsisms for Unaccompanied C Melody Saxophone (ScienSonic 13; USA) Multi-instrumentalist and multi-reeds wizard, Scott Robinson, is a restless sonic explorer who works hard at playing a wide variety of instruments and varied genres or styles. This disc was recorded live at The old Stone in April of 2016 and it was the first time that Mr. Robinson has done an unaccompanied set on one instrument. What’s interesting is that Mr. Robinson has chosen to play a C Melody sax, one of the rarest of all saxes. In the many years that I’ve heard many saxists play many different reeds, there are only a few who are known to play the C melody sax: Carla Bley, Oluyemi Thomas, Paul Dunmall and Hal Russell. Solo sax performances used to be pretty rare occurrences until Anthony Braxton’s ‘For Alto’ LP was released in 1968.
Mr. Robinson starts out slowly, playing one note or sound at a time, stretching out an occasional note, carefully bending it in one direction or another. All but one of the ten pieces were improvised on the spot with one cover added for good measure. Mr. Robinson has no doubt played many types of music on a variety of instruments, hence he draws from these varied genres: ballads, free music, modern classic, straight ahead jazz with much experimentation going on. Robinson seems to be in a mellow mood during the first few pieces, using space, bending and twisting certain notes without screaming or playing too many notes, making sure every note or sounds counts. The one cover here is “I’ve Got the World on a String” and it is tenderly, ever so sublime. Eventually Robinson increases the tempo and starts playing these fluttering lines, rarely going on in one direction for very long. Most solo sax records or gigs seem to feature quite a bit of experimentation and extended techniques. This is rarely the case here, it is more about creating a mood and showing some much needed subtly rather than going too far out. Mr. Robinson even begins “Solipsism #8” with some flatulent sounds, something you’d expect on a Mothers of Invention record (from the 60’s) or in a John Zorn solo sax concert (from the 80’s). Even this is done with some rare subtlety and not for a humorous effect. Mr. Robinson, who has worked several times with Marshall Allen (current & longtime Sun Ra Arkestra bandleader), seems to have been influenced by the Sun Ra space exploration theme, blending the tenderness of an ancient ballad with those altered dreams-like space traveling melodies of the Arkestra. It is not so easy to balance those extremes yet Scott Robinson does a wonderful job and leaves us feeling much better about life. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

THREE MORE GREAT DISCS from the Fine Folks at CONFRONT:

FREQUENCY DISASTERS with STEVE BERESFORD / VALENTINA MAGALETTI / PIERPAOLO MARTINO - Frequency Disasters (Confront Core Series 18; UK) Featuring Steve Beresford on piano, electronics & toys, Pierpaolo Martino on double bass and Valentina Magaletti on drums & percussion. If you were to look up the words “quirky” or “oddball” or “ridiculous” in the Encyclopedia of Creative Music, you might see the smiling face of British pianist Steve Beresford under those words. Not many folks have collaborated with this list of beyond category folks: Derek Bailey, the Slits, John Zorn’s original Masada (who back him for an entire CD called ‘Signals for Tea’), Han Bennink, Eugene Chadbourne, the Flying Lizards and the Melody Four. Hence, I/we never know what to expect from this enigmatic, crafty and often witty musician. The other two musicians here, whose names sound Italian, I know very little about. It turns out that percussionist, Valentina Magaletti, is currently living in London and has worked with Charles Hayward, Graham Lewis (from Wire), Thurston Moore and Jandek. It also turns out that bassist Pierpaolo Martino plays in The Dinner Party with Adrian Northover, whose disc on FMR I’ve reviewed in the recent past.
This disc was recorded in Wilton Way Studios in London in December of 2018. Like most discs on the Confront label, the central theme or glue is the more minimal or lower case or skeletal school of improv. Hence, the opener is called “Low Gulp” and stripped down yet transcending: I can hear the mysterious bass & drums rumbling but what is Beresford doing? Electronics, amplified toys, piano keyboard or inside the piano…?!? Hmmmmmm. “Studded Shirt” almost sounds like a jazz tune, swinging a bit with Beresford going both inside and outside in equal measures. When the trio take it further out, they sound as if they are on the verge of exploding and boy, does it feel good to go that far and escape our present-day prisons at home. Near the end of “Pink Quote”, it sounds as if we are taking off on a spaceship: bowed bass or rubbed strings inside the piano?!? Hard to tell, but no matter since it is quite effective. Things again take off for the stratosphere on the aptly titled “Energetic Binge”, which sounds like a hurricane captured in a jar. Mr. Beresford goes for the gusto on ramblin’ through various layers of inside-the-piano and on-the-keyboard insanity with equal aplomb on the dynamic title track. The final piece, “The Delusion Metabolist” sounds like an electronics band jamming with a jazz rhythm team. It works! A truly great listening experience, all the way around. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

THE SEALED KNOT with BURKHARD BEINS / RHODRI DAVIES / MARK WASTELL - Twenty (Confront Core Series 17; UK) The Sealed Knot feature Burkhard Beins on amplified percussion, Rhodri Davies on amplified harp and Mark Wastell on Paiste tam tams, gongs & Nepalese singing bowls. As far as I can tell, The Sealed Knot has been around for 20 years with this being their third disc. Originally Rhodri Davies played acoustic harp while Mark Wastell played (acoustic) cello. Both Wastell & Davies are also members of IST, a longtime experimental trio with the late Simon S Fell as the third member. Since they started, Mr. Davies has been playing amplified harp while Mr. Wastell plays a variety of percussion instruments in all sorts of unorthodox ways. This disc was recorded live at Cafe OTO in London in March of 2020, right before the pandemic forced everyone to lockdown, all performances canceled until further notice. At the start, we can only hear a distant low-end rumble hovering like a fat ghost from afar with occasional percussive taps winding their way slowly. The simmering of cymbals, gongs or the soft rumble of vibrating (drumhead) skins permeates the air. There are some sounds here which are hard to place: the rubbing (or bowing?) of strings on a harp or the rubbed surfaces of certain percussion instruments. There are several layers of humming drones which are carefully woven together and moving around one another. Although the instrumentation has changed over time, the overall careful, balanced and often haunting sound remains at the center. Eventually the layers of sounds or sonic manipulations get more dense, expanding and contracting like a cosmic beast whipping up a storm in our collective minds. The overall effect is quietly transcendent as is often the case with most releases on Confront. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

THE SEEN with BERTRAND DENZLER / PHIL DURRANT / DOMINIC LASH / MARK WASTELL / et al - For Sake of Joy of Study of Oneself Together (Confront Core Series 14; UK) The Seen is an ongoing moderate-sized (7-15 players) which was founded by Mark Wastell in 2003 and has had varying personnel drawn from the London Creative Music Underground. There have been two 5 CD sets so far by The Seen, both on Confront and limited to 100 copies each. This is their first single CD offering and it features a 10 person version of the ensemble. The personnel for this disc features: Bertand Denzler (from Hubbub) on tenor sax, Jennifer Allum on violin, Harry Broadbent on Fender Rhodes el. piano, Phil Durrant & Phil Julian on electronics, Douglas Benford on objects, Dominic Lash (Convergence Qt) & Graham MacKeachan on contrabasses, Mark Wastell on harmonium & tam tam and Stewart Lee on narration. This disc was recorded at Holy Mountain Studios in London in December of 2017. The narrated text was written by John Stevens, founder of Spontaneous Music Ensemble, teacher and inspiration to make UK improvisers. Mark Wastell heard Mr. Stevens recite those words in December of 1991 at a late period SME concert and was so inspired by the words that he transcribed them, hoping to use them in a future project. This is that project, some 26 years later.
There are two versions of the title piece here, each one between 27 & 30 minutes. The focus of this ensemble as well as much of what is released on the Confront label is an attention to detail, a strong balance of the elements, working together to make unified magic music island. The narrated passages are central to this music, the thoughts or glue that hold this together. Although there are few if any solos here, the music is focused as one spirit/force. The words have to do with what goes through one's minds when they are improvising, a gathering of thoughts, linking ideas with sounds, both are related to a central theme of searching and connecting, thoughts and feelings, humans with spirits, you (the listeners) with us (the sonic creators). For myself, great concerts and great recordings are more of a religious experience once they bridge the gap. This is certainly what we find here. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

CHARLES LLOYD & THE MARVELS with BILL FRISELL / GREG LEISZ / REUBEN ROGERS / ERIC HARLAND - Tone Poem (Blue Note 33134; USA) “‘Tone Poem’ is where composers and forms coalesce and commingle. The latest offering from the 83-year-old saxophone great mixes originals with tunes by Ornette Coleman, Leonard Cohen, Bola de Nieve, and others in a mystical brew of American styles: jazz, blues, country, and Americana. And Lloyd’s dream team in the Marvels—guitarist Bill Frisell, pedal steel guitarist Greg Leisz, bassist Reuben Rogers, and drummer Eric Harland—are experts at blurring edges.
Lately, Lloyd has been thriving in these borderless lands. The Marvels’ first two albums, both on Blue Note, featured Americana vocalists—Willie Nelson and Norah Jones on 2016’s I Long to See You and Lucinda Williams on half of 2018’s Vanished Gardens. Tone Poem, on the other hand, is all instrumental. Conceptually, Lloyd constellates Coleman’s “Peace,” Cohen’s “Anthem,” and de Nieve’s “Ay Amor” as pleas for conciliation. Played languorously and dreamily by the Marvels, these not-so-disparate tunes absorb each other’s flavors like ingredients simmering in stew.
That simmer seldom comes to a boil, which means your attention is liable to wander at some point. Across a whopping 70 minutes, Tone Poem’s consistent vibe sometimes threatens to tip over into homogeneity. But if you take the time to settle in, pour something strong, and listen on a decent system, its subtle pleasures will reveal themselves. “Exciting” may not be the operative word, but “satisfying” nails it.” - Morgan Enos, JazzTimes.com

SCOTT WHEELER // WHITE SNAKE PROJECTS ORCHESTRA - Naga - Opera in Two Acts (New World Records 80814; USA) Fairy tale opera has been a challenging genre for composers, with even some of the musically most successful examples, like Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel of 1893, more often presented for children than for adults. Scott Wheeler’s (b. 1952) Naga, working from a text that lies between fairy tale and mythology, stands much closer to Mozart’s marvelous exemplar, The Magic Flute, in its musical account of a restless man setting out on a spiritual quest in a world polarized between good and evil forces that are not easily distinguishable one from another. Set to a libretto by Singapore-born writer and impresario Cerise Lim Jacobs, the opera follows a Buddhist monk as he leaves his wife and sets off in search of spiritual enlightenment, under the tutelage of a stern Buddhist master and the surveillance of two fiercely passionate snakes, the “naga” of the title, designating Hindu and Buddhist serpentine deities.
Given the religious content and fairy tale legendary of the libretto, it is striking that Wheeler’s Naga is neither ritually minimalist in its musical composition, nor carefully neo-classical, but a work of full-blooded passion, longing, and jealousy, gorgeously composed in the spirit of late Romantic opera. Mozart is clearly an important model for the fairy tale composition, but Wheeler, who was a student of Virgil Thomson, reflects some of the musical values of mid-twentieth-century composers like Barber, Britten, and Bernstein.
In Naga, with its beautiful, disturbing, passionate pair of snakes, playing morally ambivalent roles, vocalized with the otherworldly timbres of a high coloratura soprano and a plaintive countertenor, Wheeler stakes out new operatic terrain, while also returning to the domain of fairy tale and legendary in opera and the precedent of The Magic Flute. Naga richly suggests some of the ways in which contemporary opera might engage not just with the intensity of human emotions but also with the complex relation between human beings and the natural world.”

REVEREND ROBERT BALLINGER & WILLIE DIXON - The King's Highway (Bear Family 17575; Germany) "A double CD with recordings by Rev. Robert Ballinger kicks off the new gospel CD series on Bear Family! Mostly with a trio, accompanied by bass and drums, the pianist and singer recorded some of the most powerful blues-drenched gospel numbers in the 1950s and early '60s. Musically, the Reverend's vocals are more reminiscent of blues and R&B shouters than of traditional gospel singing in African-American houses of worship; as a pianist, he impresses with his extreme, pounding playing in the best barrelhouse tradition. Recordings for United, Chess, Artistic and Peacock. Extensive liner notes by Chicago author Bill Dahl, carefully remastered recordings. From the 1930s on, Chicago served as the nurturing cradle of modern gospel music, thanks to the incredibly prolific Thomas A. Dorsey and his small army of protégés, choirs, and choruses. Every so often, an outsider with his own concept crashed the Windy City's burgeoning gospel scene -- and sanctified evangelist Rev. Robert Ballinger's thundering musical vision was about as close to rock and roll as you could come while still working in service of the man above. Rev. Ballinger entered a Chicago recording studio for the first time in late 1952 under the auspices of United Records. The seven sides wouldn't see light of day until Delmark Records, now owner of the United's archives, featured five of the reverend's sides on a 1997 gospel CD. The piano-pounding Ballinger debuted in 1955 on Chess Records with an inspiring rendition of Sister Rosetta Tharpe's rollicking This Train as blues legend Willie Dixon applied thundering bass (Dixon dug it so much that he wrote My Babe around its chord changes and melody), then migrated over to Eli Toscano's Artistic logo in 1958 for another one-off single before cutting two wild early '60s albums for Don Robey's Peacock label -- and they're all on this compilation."

FM EINHEIT with LEE RANALDO / GENESIS P-ORRIDGE / SUSAN STENGER / et al - Exhibition Of A Dream (Cold Spring Records 292; UK) Twelve dreams of musicians, artists, and filmmakers, interpreted by FM Einheit (ex-Einstürzende Neubauten), with voices by: Lee Ranaldo (Sonic Youth), Genesis Breyer P-Orridge (Psychic TV, Throbbing Gristle), Susan Stenger (Band Of Susans), Émilie Pitoiset, Erika Stucky, and the Gubenkian Choir; with guest musicians: Volker Kamp, Saskia von Klitzing, Robert Poss, and Susan Stenger. Exhibition Of A Dream (L'exposition D'un Rêve) is formed of twelve dreams interpreted as songs. Exploded in time, these are played as temporary and evolving patterns of shapes and forms in an otherwise empty gallery following the drawings of mandalas. Exhibition Of A Dream highlights the complex beauty of how to generate a dream in the mind of the spectator. A shared experience to be lived within our own personal inner space, these remastered dreams are an invitation to listen to a sensitive architecture of words and music. Created 2017, recorded both in public and in private in the amphitheaters and the garden of the Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian in Lisbon, and in Einheit's own studio Steinschlag. The dreamers were: Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Lee Ranaldo, Émilie Pitoiset, Susan Stenger, Susie Green, David Link, Pierre Paulin, Alexandre Estrela, Tim Etchells, Gabriel Abrantes, FM Einheit, and Genesis Breyer P-Orridge. Originally released as a triple-LP set, and only ever available at the 2018 exhibition at the Foundation. Presented in a six-panel matt-laminate double digipak.

ELECTRONIC EVOCATIONS / VARIOUS ARTISTS - A Tribute to Silver Apples (Enraptured 002; UK) When originally released in 1995, Electronic Evocations: A Tribute to Silver Apples inspired Simeon to re-activate Silver Apples. "I was completely surprised when I walked into a New York record store and saw the tribute to our music. When I got back to my studio and put it on, I was completely bowled over, not just that someone would do such a thing, but that each artist did a seriously considered and creative interpretation is indeed an honor to me. I was playing it full tilt boogie, spinning around with complete abandon in my studio, with a big grin on my face and magic finger in my hair." --Simeon, 1996. LP SECTION:

SUN RA & HIS ARKESTRA Featuring RICKY MURRAY - I Struck a Match on the Moon” / “Dreamsville” (CvsD S003; USA) “In 1961 Sun Ra took off from Chicago – where he had established the Arkestra, his dedicated ensemble and the vehicle for his mission to better the planet – and with a scaled-down version of the band he landed in New York. Their first recording session was in Newark in October of that year. The Futuristic Sounds of Sun Ra, recorded for the Savoy label, is a beautiful document of the material they'd honed during a long residency at the Wonder Inn at the end of the Chicago period. Among tracks left in the vault from that day in the studio were these two great ballads sung by Ricky Murray, both of them redolent of the bright popcraft that had long been part of Ra's repertoire, with classic Afrofuturist themes of navigating outer space and altered destiny cloaked in sweet songs with tart arrangements. This 7-inch vinyl single is limited to 1000 copies, with full-color cover including a rare photo of the band with Ricky Murray.”

NEIL YOUNG - A Letter Home (Third Man Records TMR 245; USA) “Third Man Records unearths Neil Young's A Letter Home. "An unheard collection of rediscovered songs from the past recorded on ancient electro mechanical technology captures and unleashes the essence of something that could have been gone forever..." - Homer Grosvenor”

From 1966, a set from Don Cherry featuring Ed Blackwell on drums, Henry Grimes on bass, as well as Pharoah Sanders on saxophone as part of a quartet. Cherry's abstraction on the trumpet cuts through his other work with Ornette Coleman, a more melodic player and a strong influence on Cherry. Clear vinyl.

BLACK UNITY TRIO with ABDUL WADUD / YUSUF MUMIN / HASAN AL HUT - Al-Fatihah (Gotta Groove Records 2021; USA) "Black Unity Trio - Al Fatihah quite possibly was the first independently released free jazz record ever. Originating in Oberlin, Ohio as the Black Unity Quartet, and ultimately becoming the Trio (Abdul Wadud, Yusuf Mumin, and Hasan Al Hut), the group recorded Al Fatihah in December 24, 1968 at Agency Recording Studio (which was located upstairs in the building housing the legendary Agora Theatre in Cleveland, Ohio). The album ultimately was released in May 1969 in an edition of 500 copies. The album has been legendary among collectors, producers, and DJs in the past several decades, and has been sampled numerous times on other releases. Much mystery surrounded the origins of the album, as well as the status of the musicians, until 2020 when The Wire published an interview with Hasan. Many underground jazz purists know about the intense, though relatively short-lived hotbed of avant-garde jazz in Cleveland, Ohio during the mid-to-late 1960s. Clubs such as Leo's Casino, Jazz Temple, The Doan Club, Le Cave and a few private clubs saw many young avant-garde jazz acts during this time period. I first learned of Black Unity Trio when seeking out tapes of Albert Ayler playing at Le Cave. From that point forward, I had a mission to seek out the members and see if they would be interested in making a vinyl reissue of Al Fatihah. Most of my efforts ran into dead ends, and it did not take very long to learn that the members, perhaps, were content with letting the record fall into the annals of crate digging history. Then in 2019, I received a phone call from someone referring to himself as 'Ron'; who wanted to bring some tapes by the pressing plant. Whenever I get a call on the subject of tapes, my first question is 'how old are the tapes?'. The caller replied 'late 1960's''. Of course, this perked my interest even more, so I asked what sort of material was on the tapes, to which he replied 'Oh, spiritual jazz''. 'Really?'; I replied, even more interested than ever - particularly since the caller id showed a 216 area code phone number. Then he proceeded to say 'it's called the Black Unity Trio''. I about dropped the phone; 'Are you serious, I have been trying to get a hold of you guys for a year!' I replied. Ron (Abdul) was surprised by that statement. But, it led to months of additional conversations with both he and Yusuf about how to get the record back into the world, and eventually I was introduced to Hasan as well. After many phone conferences, we were able to come to an agreement to reissue this seminal free jazz record via Gotta Groove Records' OHWax series. Yusuf personally brought the original 1968 master tapes to Cleveland in early 2020, and we have been working on the audio restoration and package details ever since. We have spared no expense in making this reissue. Our friend Grammy-Award recipient Paul Blakemore's restoration and remastering work cleaned random ticks from the original source, as well as greatly improved the balance to bring out some of the instrument subtleties which were barely, if at all audible, in the original pressing. We also used Gotta Groove's proprietary GrooveCoated stamper plating technology -- This involves an additional electro-forming step in the creation of the metal stampers used to press the grooves into the records. GrooveCoated stampers have a lubricious surface which helps high frequencies in particular to be held more intact during the course of manufacturing, verses traditional stampers. This is a record I am truly proud and excited to be working on, and I look forward to a new generation of vinyl listeners to have access to it." - Matt Earley, Executive Producer. The musicians of Black Unity Trio are paid at least 70% of the profits from this release by Gotta Groove Records, Inc.

CURTIS GODINO - Alien Nation (Feeding Tube Records 542; USA) "We were introduced to the work of Brooklyn polymath Curtis Godino by Gary Panter. We asked Gary to recommend someone with light show expertise, and he said Curtis was the guy. That was true. We also learned that Curtis was an ace musician, which has resulted in two prior FTR releases. The first was The Cave LP (FTR 417LP, 2019) by Worthless. The second was the Corners and Their Places cassette by Nothing To Semble. Both of these releases were form-busting masterworks of outsider/prog crossover with hallucinogenic overtones. And even mightier is this new LP, Alien Nation, which sounds to us like a lost '67 Mothers album, recorded at Apostolic Studios while the band was in NYC for their six-month run at the Garrick Theater. Admittedly there's nowhere near as much guitar as you'd find on an actual Mothers record, so imagine what the band might have done on a session where Frank was sick and things were led being by Don Preston and Ian Underwood in full freak mode. The music is wonderfully cartoony electronic wheezing with all sorts of other instruments (and/or mock instruments) blended into the mix. And the vocals don't sound like Frank either, but just imagine if John Kilgore had left open microphones strewn all over the studio for various people to spoot into when they wanted. It's kinda like that. But even more fucked up. With hints of Bonzos-style pop-malfunction surfacing here and there like toy robot blimps. Really wonderful stuff. If I could be any recreational drug I could name, I'd like to think I'd sound just like this." - Byron Coley, 2021

RICHARD YOUNGS - Metal River (Fourth Dimension 124; UK) “New album by a favorite artist of Fourth Dimension, whose work can traverse everywhere from avant-folk or otherworldly pop to minimalist electronics or some of the most fervent "outer sounds" one can dredge from the deepest crevices of their doubtlessly life battle-scarred imagination. On Metal River, Richard Youngs offers four songs of deep space beamed curdled electronics not far removed from being akin to the contorted death caterwauls of a cyborg species reaching out in uttermost anguish. It's like prime Edgar Froese getting snagged on Incapacitants before tumbling headlong into a dingy cellar that then has its door slammed shut and locked before one notices the only company is accorded by body parts in dusty and moldy demijohns. Features three songs on the first side, "Days of Gravity Indoors", "Metal River" and "Rainy Days Static Caravan", plus the side long "Dual Monody of Accumulated Detritus". The perfect follow up to the 2dicks 7" lathe-cut also featuring Richard Youngs and released by Fourth Dimension in June 2020. White vinyl.”

NORMAN WESTBERG & JACEK MAZURKIEWICZ - First Man in the Moon (Hallow Ground 1201; Switzerland) “An unlikely meeting of two like-minded spirits, First Man in the Moon sees the former Swans guitarist and Hallow Ground regular Norman Westberg and the prolific double bass player Jacek Mazurkiewicz collaborate for five evocative tracks. The pair finds common ground beyond the boundaries of atmospheric drone, abstract jazz, and experimental music and blurs the lines between the acoustic and the electronic. The two first met when the composer Mazurkiewicz supported Swans with his solo project 3FoNIA on their 2014 European tour. "I really enjoyed his approach," says Westberg about the Polish musician's blending of the acoustic qualities of his instrument with electronically generated sounds. A decision to collaborate was made and when the US-American musician returned to Eastern Europe to support Michael Gira on his solo tour in late 2019, Mazurkiewicz reached out to him with the idea of booking some studio time before Gira's two concerts in Warsaw. "Recording was very fun and easy," remembers Westberg. "It was just two people enjoying hearing and reacting to what the other is doing." First Man in the Moon is not however a plain document of these improvised sessions, but also shaped by Mazurkiewicz's approach as a composer. Once the recordings were finished, he selected and edited the recorded material, refining the peculiar dialogue between the guitarist's meditative drones and bright chords and his own rhythmic yet subtle approach to playing the double bass, sometimes plucking the strings and occasionally using his bow to underscore Westberg's fleeting melodies, but also using the instrument in unconventional ways to generate sound. A feeling of weightlessness prevails throughout the aptly-titled First Man in the Moon. Even at their most abstract however, these five improvisations-turned-compositions remain tangible, lively, and joyfully explorative. It is a record that you wouldn't expect from either of these musicians, but the logical result of two idiosyncratic minds sharing not only space and time, but also their respective visions with each other.

THE BIG BAD VICTO SALE! THE BIG BAD VICTO SALE! THE BIG BAD VICTO SALE! THE BIG BAD VICTO SALE!

Since 1988, I have been attending the annual Victoriaville New Music Festival (a/k/a FIMAV) in the countryside of Quebec. It is the one vacation I look forward to the most each & every year and I have never missed a fest like this. Except for the year that the festival switched from October to May, it has taken place every year until last year (2020) due to the worldwide pandemic/shutdown. Against many odds, it will take place this year, although all of the musicians participating are currently living in Canada. None of my regular crew, including myself, will be able to attend since I don’t think we can actually cross the border this year and remain safe. The Victo label initially released concert recordings from the festival and later released some related studio dates. I am a big fan of the festival and label as well and really dig everything they’ve released. The label just released an amazing historic recording of the Evan Parker Electro-Acoustic Ensemble from way back which is not part of this sale and is listed near the top of this newsletter. Everything else from the Victo label which is still in print on CD is listed below. Three things have gone out of print so there are 130 CD’s listed below. The new disc should be here in the next few days plus we do have copies of about half of the titles from below but some orders will take 1-2 weeks to get certain titles back in stock. In you want read any reviews for any/most of these titles, you can go to the DMG database: www.downtownmusicgallery.com/search.phpHere’s the deal for this sale:

THIS IS FROM MY GOOD FRIEND JESSICA HALLOCK,

This is from Jessica Hallock, please do check it out, there is so much to explore here and I know some of you are bored and need some inspiration/distraction:

Livestreams are obviously no replacement for live shows, but they're all the community we have right now––so experimental music calendar NYC-Noise.com now provides links to livestreams (with artist / curator donation info); a roundup of local musicians' releases; COVID-19-related resources, including links to grants, petitions, & a local venue donation list; & an Instagram account (@NYC_Noise) promoting artists and releases. Please let me know about your livestreams &/or new records at www.nyc-noise.com/submit.

This comes from Multi-Instrumentalist/Composer/Futurist SCOTT ROBINSON:

Here is a new SEAN ALI / MEGHAN DESMOND Music Video Collaboration:

Here is the video: https://vimeo.com/516694455

Here is just the audio:

Sean Ali plays acoustic bass and has played a number of solo & duo sets here at DMG. His bass playing is unlike anyone else I’ve heard and each set was fascinating. Meghan Desmond is one of my best friends and gig-going buddies. She was saved from a normal life by Downtown Music Scene Weirdness. Inspired by the music she heard, she picked up a camera and started to experiment. She has come a long way in the last few years, doing record covers, and photo/video collaborations with assorted Downtown Artists. Check out this new one, I think she and Sean Ali have really hit their stride! The video is in black & white and both the sounds and images are quite haunting so beware! - BLG/DMG

This comes from CHRIS CUTLER (Henry Cow, Art Bears & REcommended Records)

Chris has a podcast called Probes and this is Episode #29

https://rwm.macba.cat/en/research/probes-29

During the earlier part of the pandemic/lockdown when I started going back to work at DMG in June, I listened to all of the Probes podcast series and on the train coming and going to NYC. Each one is fascinating as Mr. Cutler Probes the many aspects of Creative Music, unique instrumentation, the history of recordings and lots more. Please take some time and listen to these, they are most enlightening.
