“C.I.A Man†by The Fugs
From ‘Virgin Fugs’ released 1965
Who can kill a general in his bed?
Overthrow dictators if they're Red?
F*cking A-man!
CIA man!
Who can buy a government so cheap?
Change a cabinet without a squeak?
F*cking A-man!
CIA man!
Who can train guerrillas by the dozens?
Send them out to kill their untrained cousins?
F*cking A-man!
CIA man!
Who can get a budget that's so great?
Who will be the 51st state?
Who has got the secret-est service?
One that makes the other service nervous?
F*cking A-man!
CIA man!
Who can take the sugar from a sack
Pour in LSD and put it back?
F*cking A-man!
CIA man!
The above song comes on while the credits are rolling at the end of ‘Burn Before Reading’, a film by the Cohen Brothers. When I first heard it while watching the end of that film, I thought that it might be a long lost Talking Heads track but later discovered that it was by the Fugs. The movie shows the ineptitude of the C.I.A. and it is pretty hilarious, on par for the great Cohen Brothers. The first band that I heard that made me laugh and question things around me, was the Mothers of Invention. They are still my favorite sixties band. Later, I discovered other ‘comedy’ and/or political bands like the Fugs and the Bonzo Dog Band. I did become a huge fan of the Fugs in the seventies when I started to collect all of their albums and saw how shrewd they were as observers of contemporary society. I saw them live at the Bottom Line in the early eighties when Kramer & Coby Battey were members, both of whom were early Zorn collaborators. Their set was one of the funniest and most provocative gigs that I had seen/heard at the Bottom Line, which was a more mainstream folk/rock/blues/jazz venue. And at the end of the set, Tuli Kupferberg actually whipped it out (his penis), a perfect way to end their wacky set. I keep going back to those half dozen Fugs albums and hearing more incisive humor bursting within. The band went from the underground ESP label to the major label Reprise (of WEA) and they got better & better. Check them out if you want to smile. Life is ridiculous sometimes and they did a good job of pointing that out. - BLG ÂÂ

THE BRUCE LEE GALLANTER/DOWNTOWN TAPE ARCHIVE HAS BEGUN!
I haven’t been to a live gig since mid March, which means it has been around four months, the longest period of time without live music since I was in high school, around 50 years ago. I thrive and survive on live music so you know that I am jonesin’ bigtime. Aside from listening to many of the albums and CD’s that I’ve acquired, I have been diving into many live recordings, the Dead, some psych, prog, punk, noise and lots of different jazz & modern classical music. My good pal, Matt Vernon, a well-respected Dead archivist has been slowly going through all of my early Downtown tapes and downloading each one, cleaning up the sound and sending me the files to check out. These cassettes come from the early Downtown days: 1979-1985 (some 40 years on). I listen to one entire set every night to hear what I captured from the history of the scene. I have 3,000 cassettes of live gigs that I taped (from 1979 - 2005) and my/our goal is to preserve them all and put them in an archive/library for future serious listeners. Matt has already downloaded more than 70 cassettes so far! I will let you know more about this as time goes on. Best set I heard this week was from Fred Frith/Ned Rothenberg/Kazue Sawai at the Old Knit in the late 1980’s. - BLG/DMG

GEORGE LEWIS / OXANA OMELCHUK // STUDIO DAN - Breaking News (Hat Ezz-Thetics 1021; Switzerland) A couple of years ago, an Austrian trombone player named Matthias Muche played here at DMG with Gerald Cleaver and Chris Pitsiokos for a most memorable night. Mr. Muche is a member of Studio Dan, a contemporary classical ensemble who have worked with Elliott Sharp, Vinko Globokar and Michel Doneda. I caught Studio Dan that same week and enjoyed their set as well. This disc features Studio Dan playing the music of AACM member/author & Columbia U professor George Lewis, as well as the music of Oxana Omelchuk. The liner notes on this disc were written by Brian Morton and are most fascinating and they discuss the probable causes of the Third and Fourth Wortld wars, as well as the profound ways that both composers here deal with “the way we experience, retain and communicate information†in this day and age. The music itself is something else, the more we listen, the more we hear.
George Lewis’ piece is titled “As We May Feelâ€Â, which is the title of an essay by Vannevar Bush written at the end of WWII, a pioneer in computer information and development. There are several layers of moving currents or waves going on here, things are in a state of constant flux, as one line shifts into another. As soon as we hear one idea erupt, a different fragment emerges or submerges. Yet, everything remains connected or focused in the flow of events. When I played this piece for the second and third time, I started to hear more going on, things that I missed the first time around. I had to turn off the kitchen fan and listen more closely. I noticed that the quieter parts and use of silence or space, had me focusing on certain nuances or textures. More was revealed. The second piece was composed by Ms. Oxana Omelchuk and is called, “Wow and Flutter, for Two Trombones and Ensembleâ€Â, which is a speed variant caused by turntables and tapes machines which causes pitch variations. Considering that I hadn’t heard of Ms. Omelchuk before now, this piece is even more extraordinary. The trombonists here, Matthias Muche and Daniel Riegler, are featured and at the top of the ensemble. While they play a series of long tones together, the ensemble moves in waves around them with fragments of different styles or genres erupting here and there. In the second section, the bassist plays a soft, hypnotic bass throb while the rest of the ensemble swirls tightly around him, first softly and then explosively later on. The change in directions and use of old jazz inserts are especially well done and filled many surprises, muted jazz vocals from (sampled) old records. It sounds as if we are weaving our way through a history of recorded music which somehow unfolds organically. Both pieces are well exploring several times since each is filled with unexpected surprises.      ÂÂ

JOHN COLTRANE QUARTET with McCOY TYNER / JIMMY GARRISON / ELVIN JONES - My Favorite Things - Graz 1962 (Hat Ezz-Thetics 1020; Switzerland) Featuring John Coltrane on tenor & soprano saxes, McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on contrabass and Elvin Jones on drums. I recall hearing “My Favorite Things†on jazz radio from NYC in the fall of 1972 and being quickly swept away. It was a staple on jazz radio at the time so I heard it often. I bought a mono copy of the ‘My Favorite Things’ (studio) album for around $2 in a cut-out bin soon thereafter and played that album over & over & over. Throughout the seventies I kept buying more Trane albums and discovered that he had evolved immensely from the time that record was released in 1961 until his passing in 1967. As his music expanded and got further out and more spiritual, it took some time to fully absorb his music, especially gems like “A Love Supreme†or “Ascensionâ€Â. Ever since purchasing everything from his lengthy catalogue that I could find, I continued to search for unreleased and illegitimate recordings, a search that a number of us Trane fans continue on today. Earlier this week, I heard this disc for the first time and it felt great to hear Mr. Coltrane’s singular tone and marvelous playing. When Trane and the rest of his classic quartet went on tour, they took off musically, expanding their songs and pushing them higher and further out. This Trane’s classic quartet, all four members are master musicians and integral to the group sound and continuing exploration. The standard “Bye Bye Blackbirdâ€Â, which I recall from several Miles Davis records and “My Favorite Things†(from ‘The Sound of Music’ film/musical) are both 23 or more minutes at length so the quartet just keeps going… Both Frank and myself were smiling when we listened to this music, which is nearly sixty years old, this is a true source of inspiration which we do indeed still need. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG ÂÂ

PERE UBU with DAVID THOMAS / GARY SIPERKO / ROBERT WHEELER / MICHELE TEMPLE / STEVE MEHLMAN KEITH MOLINE / GAGARIN / DARRYL BOON - By Order of Mayor Pawlicki - Live in Jarocin (Cherry Red Records Bred 802; UK) The first time I caught Pere Ubu was in 1979 at CBGB’s, as my pal Fred Frith had coaxed me into going saying that I should check them out. He was right and they were brutal live, it completely blew my mind. At that point their lead singer David Thomas was known as Crocus Bohemith and he sang in his own weird way and struck a small anvil with hammer as he sang. He was indeed scary! I have been a fan ever since and have heard Pere Ubu and several David Thomas bands live perhaps a dozen times throughout those 40 years. I haven’t heard them live in many years now and didn’t know what to expect from this new 2 CD set.
Right from the start, the band is on fire! After a quick intro, they are off and into “Heart of Darknessâ€Â, churning and burning! This song was released on their first 12†EP from 1979 and it still sounds vital today. Pere Ubu have long had an analogue synth player in the band and still have one here, his synth squalls and burbles are potent and an integral part of their sound. Pere Ubu play songs from their long checkered history, their distinct sound remains the same no matter who is in the band. Blisterin’ slide guitar, shrieking synth, phat, thick, throbbing rhythm team with powerful, intense lead vocals and strong solid back-up vocal chorus. David Thomas still sounds crazed yet is always in control, completely compelling as a great lead singer can be. So nice to hear “Rhapsody in Pink†after so many years, “Spend a day in the water…â€Â. Some of the oldest songs, like “My Dark Ages†(w/ incredible guitar solo!), “Dub Housing†and “Final Solution†sound especially inspired! The first disc is some 70 minutes and contains 18 songs, all great, all in your face! The second disc features six bloody encore songs from two other concerts in Heidleberg and Zagreb. The Heidleberg gig includes a powerful version of MC5’s “Kick Out The Jams†and Dead Boys’ “Sonic Reducerâ€Â(originally done by Rocket from the Tombs, which is where David Thomas started out). The Zagreb set was recorded five years earlier (2013) and has different personnel except for Thomas & the drummer. It, of course, sounds just as mind-blowing! We have all been cooped up for too f**king long, sooooo break out your dancing shoes, get down and rock out once more!!! - MC BruceLee at DMG  ÂÂ

DAVE DOUGLAS QUINTET with JON IRABAGON / MATT MITCHELL / LINDA MAY HAN OH / RUDY ROYSTON - Brazen Heart Live - From the Legendary Week atJazz Standard NYC (Greenleaf 1067; USA) Featuring Dave Douglas on trumpet & compositions, Jon Irabagon on tenor sax, Matt Mitchell on piano, Linda May Han Oh on acoustic bass and Rudy Royston on drums. This gem actually was released in 2018 but I didn’t hear about it at the time. I finally found my copy at home in a box of Dave Douglas CD’s which were buried in my listening room. For the past couple of weeks I have listened to one set per night from this multi-disc set. Every set sounds great and every set is different, all members of this all-star band get a chance to stretch out and solo at length. There are some incredibly magical moments throughout and the quintet gets better with every set as this music continually evolves. I have another three discs to listen to and I am inspired to hear this quintet swing and soar throughout. This music helps to deal with my live music jones, I haven’t been to a gig in some four months. Jeez, it hurts to say that. Anyway, grab this gem and away you will go. - BLG/DMG ÂÂ
8 CD Set $40
MARKUS REUTER / FABIO TRENTINI / ASAF SIRKIS - Truce (MoonJune Records MJR 100; USA) Featuring Markus Reuter on Touch guitars & live looping, Fabio Tretini on Wal fretless bass & bass synth and Asaf Sirkis on drums. German Touch guitarist, Markus Reuter, is a member of the Stickmen (Crimson offshoot), Europa String Choir plus collaborations with Stephan Thelen and Gary Husband. I can’t say that I had heard of bassist Fabio Trentini before now. I do recognize the name of the drummer, Asaf Sirkis from his work with Eyal Maoz, Phil Robson and Mark Latimer/John Etheridge. It seems that Mr. Sirkis has a couple of discs out as a leader on the now defunct Konnex label.
This disc was recorded live at a studio in Spain in May of 2019. The opening track is also the title track and it is centered with a cool funky, slippery fretless bass groove, slamming drums and strong Frippish sustained guitar. The guitar solo is long, furiously paced and pretty astonishing. The piece eventually winds down with a long tribal drum groove and a slower, well-paced final guitar solo. I haven’t heard much fretless bass in years, especially after Jaco P burned his bridges. I was/am a fan of Percy Jones and Mick Karn, which is probably closer to the way Trentini plays. I do dig Mr. Trentini’s tone and tasty bass lines. On “Bogeyman†Reuter takes another long, story-like, brain-frying guitar solo while Mr. Trentini plays a most memorable melodic bass part. “Be Still My Brazen Heart†is about as close to King Crimson as I’ve heard in many years but still has its own sound as well. Certainly one of the best prog/jam power trio discs I’ve heard in a long while. You've got to dig that great bassline on “Gossamer Thingsâ€Â, slippery, slinky robot-like funk line with eerie space-rock guitar solo that will take you away. - BLG/DMG ÂÂ

GARY HUSBAND & MARKUS REUTER - Music of Our Times (MoonJune Records MJR 101; USA) Featuring Gary Husband on Fazioli Grand Piano and Markus Reuter on Touch guitars & live electronics. Gary Husband is a rare commodity, a great musician who is impressive on both drums and keyboards. Husband has worked with other strong players like Jack Bruce, John McLaughlin, Billy Cobham and Alan Holdsworth. On records, he can easily switch between both instruments depending on what is needed in each situation. German guitarist, Markus Reuter, is a member of the Stickmen (Crimson offshoot), Europa String Choir plus he has collaborated with Stephan Thelen, guitarist from Sonar. - BLG/DMG
“Rarely has an album title been so perfectly descriptive. In March, 2020 the Stick Men with special guest Gary Husband had just begun a Japan and China tour. But it was cancelled by the pandemic after one show at the Blue Note in Nagoya. Thinking quickly, Husband and Stick Men touch guitarist Markus Reuter booked time in a Tokyo studio before their flights home, and recorded these spontaneous improvised duets.
Mr. Husband takes the lead, playing an especially resonant Fazioli F212 Grand Piano (also the piano of choice for jazz great Herbie Hancock). Reuter is heard on live electronics and the Touch Guitars AU8. Opener "Colour Of Sorrow" is a mournful rubato ballad which sets the tone for the set. It is centered on the piano, with a varied accompaniment from the touch guitar: sometimes sounding like a conventional guitar, sometimes electronically processed into something unrecognizable. "Across The Azure Blue" sounds like it could be played in a cathedral: reverent and spacious. It also features more active interaction, with swelling chords, pedal point and counterpoint interacting with the piano.
The title tune begins with Reuter's live electronics, which continue to swell underneath Husband's piano, like a ghostly string ensemble. "White Horses (for Allan)" is Husband's dedication to his former band-mate Allan Holdsworth. Reuter does not attempt a comparable role, instead opting for textural commentary on the piano part. "Illuminated Heart" concludes the set in a more optimistic mood. Reuter's previous album Truce (Moonjune Records, 2020) presented him as the featured soloist in a power trio, so listeners may be surprised to hear him in a primarily supportive role. However, the setting is very similar to his longtime collaboration with pianist Robert Rich.
But there is no doubt that the atmosphere here is completely in tune with the current mood. Husband and Reuter were able to play together in a room just before that became almost impossible in most parts of the world. Their improvisations are an early impression of a world where musicians can no longer perform liveâ€â€a major impediment for both artistic expression and earning a living. Hopefully this situation will be resolved sooner rather than later.†- Mark Sullivan, AllAboutJazz   ÂÂ

PLEASE - Circus Days: A Collection of Demos and Studio Recordings 1967-1969 (Acme Gramophone/Lion Productions ACLN 1020; UK) "Sink into a vision of a dreamy psychedelic universe which seems to have been Peter Dunton's own on Circus Days, the third collection of previously unreleased recordings from Dunton's late 1960's British psychedelic band, Please. If Sonny Rollins is the 'Saxophone Colossus' (and he is -- I love Sonny Rollins, a true lion of jazz), surely Peter Dunton is a top contender for Underground Psychedelia Colossus: Neon Pearl (1967); the Flies (1968); Please (1967 and 1969); Gun (1969); songwriting for Infinity (1969-70); and of course, the band he is best known for, one of the most important underground psychedelic bands to ever devise trippy music and lay it down on tape, T2 (1969-1972). Psychedelic music lovers like us love Peter Dunton's music. Madlib loves him too. Dunton wrote an incredible amount of material during the psychedelic era. Like so many other musicians before him, he moved on, thinking that these recordings had no magic to them. But nothing could have been less true. Getting to hear the demo version of the monumental 'Morning' from T2's epochal 'It'll All Work Out in Boomland' is a chill-maker if ever there was one. This release follows on from two other superb albums of unreleased music by Please, '1968-1969' and 'Seeing Stars'. The music on Circus Days can easily be filed next to that of contemporary bands like Blossom Toes, Forever Amber, Tomorrow, July, and an album which is now lauded as one of the best of the era, Odessey And Oracle by The Zombies. Circus Days contains the previously mentioned essential highlight -- the original 1969 demo version of 'Morning,' later to appear on T2's fabulous It'll All Work Out in Boomland album. Other earlier demos include the classic 'Gently As You Feel,' and 'To Dream,' which features additional female vocals. Booklet includes lyrics and some background on the 1960's work life of Peter Dunton. Last but certainly not least, our Acme/Lion Circus Days CD edition includes three bonus tracks not on the LP version."

MOSE ALLISON - Complete Recordings: 1957-1962 (Enlightenment 9036; EEC) Born just outside Tippo, Mississippi on his grandfather's farm (known as The Island 'because Tippo Bayou encircles it'), Mose Allison was already taking piano lessons by the age of five. In 1956 he moved to New York City and launched his jazz career, performing with artists such as Stan Getz, Gerry Mulligan, Al Cohn, Zoot Sims, and Phil Woods. His debut album, 'Back Country Suite', was issued on the Prestige label in 1957. The album featured the song 'Young Man Blues' which later became a staple of The Who's live set. Allison's second record, 'Local Color' also on Prestige, contained his first recording of 'Parchman Farm', the song for which Mose Allison still remains best known. Although Allison had adapted the song from an original blues by Bukka White in 1938, he largely changed the original arrangement and added new lyrics, it is the Mose Allison version that numerous subsequent artists have covered. Mose formed his own trio in 1958 with Addison Farmer on bass and Nick Stabulas on drums and it was this line up that recorded 'Young Man Mose', Allison's third album. For the follow up, 'Creek Bank' Stabulas was replaced by Ronnie Free who would stay for three albums. By 1959's 'Autumn Song' Allison was becoming better known for his vocal skills than his piano playing, although he also continued to compose enthusiastically and many of his Prestige albums were made up of a mix of self composed cuts and his self arranged versions of pop, blues and jazz standards as well as covers of then contemporary writers like Ray Charles. This 5 CD compilation includes all Mose Allison's albums released between his 1957 debut and his first two Atlantic albums (both 1962). Containing eleven full albums in all, this period is considered that in which Mose Allison made his finest and most exciting music.â€Â

JOHNNY CASH - Complete Sun Releases And Columbia Singles 1955-62 (Acrobat 9054; UK) Johnny Cash occupies an unusual niche in popular music as an artist who was able to straddle the genres to encompass not only the country idiom with which he is most identified but also rockabilly, blues, rock 'n' roll, gospel and folk, to the extent that he was inducted into the Hall Of Fame in country, rock 'n' roll and gospel. He was one of the artists who came to fame on Sam Phillips' Sun label alongside Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis, and during his time with Sun, and later with Columbia, during the period covered by this collection he had over 40 entries in either the pop or country charts, including iconic songs such as "I Walk The Line", "Folsom Prison Blues", ""Ballad Of A Teenage Queen", "Get Rhythm" and "Don't Take Your Guns To Town", most of which were among his five country No. 1s. This great value 85-track anthology represents a substantial overview of his key early career, which set the tone for his several decades of across-the-board stardom, including movie roles, network TV shows and high profile recognition. It comprises all of the tracks released by Sun either on singles, EPs or LPs during this period, plus all the A & B sides of his singles for Columbia from this era.

THOMAS CHAPIN QUARTETS With PETER MADSEN/KIYOTO FUJIWARA or SCOTT COLLEY/REGGIE NICHOLSON or MATT WILSON - Never Let Me Go: Quartets '95 & '96 (Playscape 111095; USA) A new three-disc set featuring two UNRELEASED late-career performances by saxophonist/composer Thomas Chapin, including his final New York concert before succumbing to leukemia in 1998 at age 40. Mixed and mastered from original tapes discovered in the private family collection, this special historical release was produced in partnership with Akasha, Inc., the non-profit organization founded in 1999 by Chapin's widow, Terri Castillo-Chapin, to preserve and advance his musical legacy. In addition to the music, the set features liner notes from veteran jazz journalist and broadcaster Brian Morton, exclusive archival photos and remembrances from the musicians who joined him for these shows. Discs one and two capture Chapin's working quartet of the time, with pianist Peter Madsen, bassist Kiyoto Fujiwara and drummer Reggie Nicholson, performing at Flushing Town Hall in Queens on November 10th, 1995. The group played two selections from You Don't Know Me (Arabesque Records), as well as a wide variety of other material, including Artie Shaw's "Moonray", Thelonious Monk's "Ugly Beauty", Charlie Parker's "Red Cross" and Jimmy Webb's "Wichita Lineman". Chapin founded this ensemble in the early 90's to explore new harmonic possibilities in his music after years of performing and recording with his highly regarded trio. In addition to this date, they performed regularly around New York, including week-long engagements at Iridium Jazz Club and The Village Gate. In contrast, the third disc captures the first and only concert ever played by a later quartet featuring Madsen, bassist Scott Colley and drummer Matt Wilson at The Knitting Factory on December 19th, 1996. For what turned out to be his final performance in New York, this ensemble presented extended readings of three new pieces written specifically for its all-star lineup, as well as a version of his well-known composition "Sky Piece" and an arrangement of Roland Kirk's "Lovellevellilloqui". "They can do just about anything," wrote Peter Watrous in his review of this show for the New York Times, "and Mr. Chapin had the group move from freetime sections to swinging parts that moved with complex harmonies. Mr. Wilson doubled and halved the tempos; the music sounded wonderfully unstable. One piece, a ballad, invoked the Blue Note Label in 1964; Mr. Chapin tore through a composition by Rahsaan Roland Kirk, using a hard, rough tone. He likes heat and velocity, and the music flew by, jammed with notes." In summing up Chapin's place in jazz history for the eight-disc retrospective Alive (Knitting Factory Works) in 1999, GRAMMY(r) winning jazz critic and author Bob Blumenthal wrote, "An honest appraisal of the universe of improvised music created in the decade of his activity as a bandleader should persuade all but the most doctrinaire that Thomas Chapin was one of the definitive artists of the 1990s. Not the most heavily exposed or fashionable, perhaps; but a musician who got at the emotional and spiritual nub of what jazz is supposed to be about as successfully and consistently as anyone working during the period."

SONNY CLARK - The Complete Albums Collection 1957-1962 (Enlightenment 9045; EEC)Conrad Yeatis "Sonny" Clark (July 21, 1931 - January 13, 1963) was among the very finest jazz pianists working in the hard bop idiom. Born and raised in Herminie, Pennsylvania, a coal mining town east of Pittsburgh, Sonny was the youngest of eight children. When visiting an aunt in California aged 20, Clark decided to stay and began working with saxophonist Wardell Gray. He then went to San Francisco with Oscar Pettiford and after a couple months, was working with clarinetist Buddy DeFranco in 1953. Clark toured the USA and Europe with DeFranco until January 1956, when he joined The Lighthouse All-Stars, led by bassist Howard Rumsey. Wishing to return to the east coast, Clark served as accompanist for singer Dinah Washington in February 1957 in order to relocate to New York City. In New York, Clark was often requested as a sideman by many musicians, partly because of his rhythmic comping. He frequently recorded for Blue Note Records, serving as a sideman for many hard bop players, including Kenny Burrell, Donald Byrd, Paul Chambers, John Coltrane, Dexter Gordon, Art Farmer, Curtis Fuller, Grant Green, Philly Joe Jones, Clifford Jordan, Jackie McLean, Hank Mobley, Art Taylor and Wilbur Ware. He also recorded sessions with Charles Mingus, Sonny Rollins, Billie Holiday, Stanley Turrentine, and Lee Morgan. As a band leader, Clark recorded eight albums including Dial "S" for Sonny (1957), Sonny's Crib (1957), Sonny Clark Trio (1957), with Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones, and Cool Struttin' (1958). Sonny Clark Trio, with George Duvivier and Max Roach was released in 1960. All these recordings are included on this intriguing compilation. Clark died of a heart attack in New York City in January 1963 although commentators attribute the early death to his drug and alcohol abuse. Close friend and fellow jazz pianist Bill Evans dedicated the composition "NYC's No Lark" (an anagram of "Sonny Clark") to him after his death, included on Evans' Conversations with Myself (1963).

STAN KENTON - The Classic Albums Collection: 1948-1962 (Enlightenment 9143; EEC)A pivotal figure in the development of big band music during the 20th century, Stan Kenton's work opened up a whole new world of possibilities within the genre, dragging it up from its traditional roots into a thrilling form that had previously been unimaginable. A highly skilled pianist, arranger and composer, Kenton's style brought together jazz with elements of classical and avant-garde, producing a new sound that he dubbed "progressive jazz". Even within the ambitious nature of his most left-field music, Kenton remained a success during his entire lifetime, both commercially and critically, releasing as he did an eclectic array of classic albums across the tenure of his career, but with a notable pioneering spirit from the advent of progressive jazz in the late 1940s, through to his most challenging work in the early 1960s. Without equal in so many respects, Stan Kenton remains one of the finest jazz bandleaders of all. This collection, spanning over five hours of music across four discs, provides a taste of the most pioneering music the great man was responsible for and a fraction of his enormous body of work, albeit one that illustrates well his eclectic and challenging spirit. Providing a perfect introduction to the best of this musical genius' output, the collection additionally acts as a welcome reminder to those already familiar with Kenton's esteemed catalogue.

TONY KINSEY with JOE HARRIOTT / TUBBY HAYES / RONNIE SCOTT / DON RENDELL / et al - Collection: 1953-61 (Acrobat 6001; UK) Drummer Tony Kinsey is one of the true godfathers of British post-war modern jazz, and even now in 2012, well into his eighties, is still playing gigs and writing innovative music. We have worked with Tony to put together this almost complete anthology of his recordings during the frenetic decade from the early 50s through to the early 60s, when his skill and influence in putting together successive influential line-ups of small groups, especially during his lengthy residency at London's legendary Flamingo Club, gave him a unique role in the genre. This 6-CD set pulls together a remarkable range or material, and features a veritable who's-who of top jazz names from the era, including the likes of Joe Harriott, Tubby Hayes, Bill Le Sage, Tommy Whittle, Ronnie Ross, Don Rendell, Lennie Bush, Jimmy Deuchar, and many more, in the various groups he led during that time. It's not only a hugely entertaining selection of music, but also a great showcase for Tony's understated but always swinging and grooving drum technique, and a tribute to his huge influence on British jazz.â€Â

TANGERINE DREAM With EDGAR FROESE / KLAUS SCHULZE / CONRAD SCHITZLER - The Pink Years Albums 1970-1973 (Esoteric Recordings 41037; UK) "Esoteric Recordings' Reactive label is pleased to announce the release of a newly re-mastered 4 CD clamshell boxed set which gathers together the first four legendary albums by Tangerine Dream, originally released on the Ohr label in Germany between 1970 and 1973, known by fans as 'The Pink Years' albums. Electronic Meditation was recorded in Berlin in October 1969 and featured the first Tangerine Dream line-up of Edgar Froese (guitars, organ, tapes, sound effects), Klaus Schulze (drums, percussion) and Conrad Schnitzler (cello, violin, typewriter). Upon its release in 1970 the album would define a genre of music and herald the massive creative musical explosion that would emerge in Germany in the early 1970s. Alpha Centauri was recorded at the Dierks studio in Stommeln and featured a line-up of Edgar Froese, Chris Franke and Steve Schroyder with guests Udo Dennebourg (flute) and Roland Pualyck (synthesiser). Released in 1971 the influence of the album was immense, with the band creating imaginative soundscapes previously unheard on record. Zeit, released in August 1972, a double album with one lengthy track per side, was recorded at the Dierks studio once again and featured a guest appearance by Florian Fricke of another legendary ambient German group, Popol Vuh. One of Tangerine Dream's finest early albums, Zeit was enthusiastically championed in the UK by DJ John Peel and was the group's major breakthrough. Atem, released in 1973, was the band's last release on the Ohr label & heralded the beginning of Tangerine Dream's wider international acclaim. Atem enjoyed success outside of Germany and eventually led to the group signing to the newly formed Virgin label later in 1973. This clamshell box of The Pink Years Albums 1970 - 1973 features Electronic Meditation, Alpha Centauri, Zeit, and Atem packaged in replica card sleeves and also includes a poster."

CECIL TAYLOR With JOHN COLTRANE / STEVE LACY / TED CURSON / ARCHIE SHEPP / ROSWELL RUDD / JIMMY LYONS / SUNNY MURRAY / et al - The Complete Collection: 1956 - 1962 (Enlightenment 9018; EEC) Cecil Taylor is generally acknowledged as one of the pioneers of free jazz. His music is characterized by an extremely energetic, physical approach, producing complex improvised sounds, frequently involving tone clusters and intricate polyrhythms. His piano technique has been likened to percussion, for example described as "eighty-eight tuned drums". After first steps in R&B and swing-styled small groups in the early 1950s, he formed his own band with soprano saxophonist Steve Lacy in 1956. Taylor's first recording, Jazz Advance, featured Lacy and was released in 1956. He collaborated with saxophonist John Coltrane in 1958 on the album Stereo Drive. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, Taylor's music grew more complex and moved away from existing jazz styles. Landmark recordings, like Unit Structures (1966), appeared. With 'The Unit', musicians developed often volcanic new forms of conversational interplay. By 1961, Taylor was working regularly with alto saxophonist Jimmy Lyons, one of his most important and consistent collaborators. Taylor, Lyons and drummer Sunny Murray (and later Andrew Cyrille) formed the core personnel of The Unit, Taylor's primary group effort until Lyons's premature death in 1986. Lyons' playing, strongly influenced by jazz icon Charlie Parker, retained a strong blues sensibility and helped keep Taylor's increasingly avant-garde music tethered to the jazz tradition. In the 1970s Cecil Taylor often played live as a solo performer and many recordings of such gigs were released on album. He continued to gig throughout the 80s and formed the Feel Trio in the early 1990s with William Parker (bass) and Tony Oxley (drums). This 5 disc set includes all the recordings released by Taylor between 1956 - the year of his recording debut - and 1962, the period which, for most of his audience, contains the finest work this maverick musician ever produced.

TEMPO ANTHOLOGY With DIZZY REECE / TUBBY HAYES / DON RENDELL / RONNIE SCOTT / VICTOR FELDMAN / JIMMY DEUCHAR / et al - British Modern Jazz 1954 - 60 (Acrobat 7101; UK) Between 1954 and 1960, the British Tempo label probably did more than any other recording imprint to document the rapid progress of local modern jazz. Poorly funded, and run almost exclusively on the irrepressible energy of Tony Hall, otherwise part of Decca's exploitation team, its catalogue of EP's, 10" and 12" LPs captured the early steps of such soon-to-be legends as saxophonists Tubby Hayes, Ronnie Scott and Don Rendell, multi-instrumentalist Victor Feldman, trumpeters Dizzy Reece and Jimmy Deuchar and drummer Phil Seamen, all of whom effectively entered a rotating stock company, operating in much the same way as Art Blakey, Horace Silver and Hank Mobley were then doing on the fabled Blue Note label. Keen to introduce his roster of artists to as wider audience as possible, Hall however did something Blue Note's bosses never tried: during 1957 and '58 he released three multi-artist anthologies, each with the aim of drawing in new listeners via specific thematic angles, sometimes spicing the mix with material not available elsewhere in Tempo's output. Cool Music For A Hot Night promised a program of ballad performances: Speak Low delivered a sequence of largely grooving medium-tempo material and Swingin' The Blues found Tempo's stars tackling funky, blues-related themes by the likes of Sonny Rollins, Sonny Stitt and Horace Silver. Each album also had the considerable bonus of striking cover art featuring the then young-starlet-cum-model Jackie Collins, later to become a celebrated author. Since their initial release, all three albums have gone on to become rare collectors' items, prized as much for their sleeve imagery as their musical contents. This new Acrobat 4-CD contains all three LPs in their original running order, restoring material that was sometimes edited out in order to fit the original playing time. Featuring the collectable cover art, rare photographs of many of the participating musicians, reminiscences by Tony Hall and a detailed booklet note by award-winning saxophonist and author Simon Spillett, this release makes an ideal introduction to a record label once dubbed "the Blue Note of British jazz." A further bonus CD assembles a similar mood music programme from Tempo's later 1957-60 catalogue, including performances by Tommy Whittle, Eddie Thompson and Tony Crombie.â€Â

BOBBY TIMMONS With CLIFFORD JORDAN / JOHN JENKINS / BLUE MITCHELL / RON CARTER / ALBERT HEATH / et al - The Riverside Albums Collection (Enlightenment 9154; EEC) “Born into a deeply religious family in Philadelphia on 19th December 1935, Robert Henry "Bobby" Timmons took his first musical steps at a young age. Taught piano as a child by his uncle Robert Habershaw, who also taught John Coltrane's future pianist Alfred McCoy Tyner, the young Bobby joined a family wide tradition of producing musical prodigies. The son and grandson of ministers, Timmons first performed at the family church where, at times, he played alongside future jazz drummer Albert "Tootie" Heath. He was awarded a scholarship to the Philadelphia Musical Academy after graduating high school. In 1954, Timmons moved to New York and began a fruitful career as a session musician. His debut recording session was with trumpeter Kenny Dorham in 1956, following which, during '56 and '57, he worked with other pioneering players such as Chet Baker, Maynard Ferguson, Curtis Fuller, Hank Mobley and Lee Morgan. In 1959, Timmons signed a seven album deal with Riverside, who soon issued his first record as bandleader; This Here is Bobby Timmons. Released in January 1960 and performed by the trio of Bobby Timmons with Sam Jones on bass and Jimmy Cobb on drums, the album was warmly received. In 1959, Timmons signed a seven album deal with Riverside, who soon issued his first record as bandleader; This Here is Bobby Timmons. Released in January 1960 and performed by the trio of Bobby Timmons with Sam Jones on bass and Jimmy Cobb on drums, the album was warmly received, including as it did his three most famous compositions to date. This 4CD collection brings together the entirety of Bobby Timmons repertoire for Riverside, featuring eight albums originally released between 1957 and 1964, all now faithfully re-mastered and culminating in over 5 hours of superb modern jazz. Serving as both the perfect introduction to this jazz giant's music, and as a welcome reminder of his finest work, this enticing boxed set will delight everyone who takes the time to listen. “

ATTENTION ALL CREATIVE MUSICIANS OUT THERE, Around the world.
If you have a link, for some music that you are working on and want to share it with the folks who read the DMG Newsletter, please send the link to DMG at DMG@Downtownmusicgallery.com. Many of us are going stir crazy staying at home so if you want to inspire us and help us get through these difficult times, please show us what you got. I listed some these last week but have also a few more.
MORE THINGS TO DO WHILE YOU ARE WAITING AROUND FOR THE WORLD TO END OR GET BETTER:
STILL STIR CRAZY AFTER ALL THESE YEARS!
This is the section where I usually recommend upcoming concerts in the NYC area. As far as I can tell there are no upcoming shows anywhere around here, except perhaps on-line. All places I usually frequent are now closed for the foreseeable future. And everyone is worried about the near future, their health and their sanity for their friends and family. I am trying to come up with something inspirational to put out there but I am also very worried about myself, the store, all of the creative musicians that we need and support, as well as everyone else who has lost their jobs. ÂÂ
I have been at home at my old apartment in New Jersey, cleaning, reorganizing my collection, finding lots of doubles, listening to dozens of records, CD’s,cassettes and DVD’s. And working on my ongoing series of discographies and assorted music lists.
Over the past month a number of musicians have been putting up some music on-line for anyone to check out. I know that many of us are going a bit stir crazy so it is time to do some soul searching and serious listening. Here is a list of some music links to check out:

THIS IS FROM MY GOOD FRIEND JESSICA HALLOCK,
who runs the New York Noise website and helps to promote creative music from hundreds of different musicians! At the beginning of April, Jessica convinced me not to go to the store and stay at home & work from there/here. Thanks to Jessica, Frank Meadows and Charmaine Lee, I have taken their advice seriously and I remain safe and alive (at home) while the store continues to do mail-order. Thanks Jessica, I do appreciate your tough love, this is what it takes sometimes to get the elder folks to break with their usual routine or habits and think more clearly about life.
This is from Jessica Hallock, please do check it out, there is so much to explore here and I know some of you are bored and need some inspiration/distraction:
Livestreams are obviously no replacement for live shows, but they're all the community we have right now––so experimental music calendar NYC-Noise.com now provides links to livestreams (with artist / curator donation info); a roundup of local musicians' releases; COVID-19-related resources, including links to grants, petitions, & a local venue donation list; & an Instagram account (@NYC_Noise) promoting artists and releases. Please let me know about your livestreams &/or new records at www.nyc-noise.com/submit.

Over the past few weeks, uncertainty has become a prominent part of everyday life. Although the unknown can be unsettling, we can find inspiration in the ways performing artists tap into impermanence to fuel their creativity.
