DMG NEWSLETTER FOR APRIL 3rd, 2020: Stuck Inside My Apartment with the Corona Virus Blues Again!

Stuck Inside My Apartment with the Corona Virus Blues Again!

"Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again"
By Bob Dylan for ‘Blond on Blond’ album, released

Oh, the ragman draws circles
Up and down the block
I'd ask him what the matter was
But I know that he don't talk
And the ladies treat me kindly
And furnish me with tape
But deep inside my heart
I know I can't escape
Oh, Mama, can this really be the end
To be stuck inside of Mobile
With the Memphis blues again

Well Shakespeare he's in the alley
With his pointed shoes and his bells
Speaking to some French girl
Who says she knows me well
And I would send a message
To find out if she's talked
But the post office has been stolen
And the mailbox is locked
Oh, Mama, can this really be the end
To be stuck inside of Mobile
With the Memphis blues again

Mona tried to tell me
To stay away from the train line
She said that all the railroad men
Just drink up your blood like wine
And I said "Oh I didn't know that
But then again there's only one I've met
And he just smoked my eyelids
And punched my cigarette"
Oh, Mama, can this really be the end
To be stuck inside of Mobile
With the Memphis blues again

Grandpa died last week
And now he's buried in the rocks
But everybody still talks about
How badly they were shocked
But me, I expected it to happen
I knew he'd lost control
When he built a fire on Main Street
And shot it full of holes
Oh, Mama, can this really be the end
To be stuck inside of Mobile
With the Memphis blues again

Now the senator came down here
Showing ev'ryone his gun
Handing out free tickets
To the wedding of his son
And me, I nearly got busted
And wouldn't it be my luck
To get caught without a ticket
And be discovered beneath a truck
Oh, Mama, can this really be the end
To be stuck inside of Mobile
With the Memphis blues again

Now the preacher looked so baffled
When I asked him why he dressed
With twenty pounds of headlines
Stapled to his chest
But he cursed me when I proved it to him
Then I whispered, "Not even you can hide
You see, you're just like me
I hope you're satisfied"
Oh, Mama, can this really be the end
To be stuck inside of Mobile
With the Memphis blues again

Now the rainman gave me two cures
Then he said, "Jump right in"
The one was Texas medicine
The other was just railroad gin
And like a fool I mixed them
And it strangled up my mind
And now, people just get uglier
And I have no sense of time
Oh, Mama, can this really be the end
To be stuck inside of Mobile
With the Memphis blues again

When Ruthie says come see her
In her honky-tonk lagoon
Where I can watch her waltz for free
'Neath her Panamanian moon
And I say, "Aw come on now
You know, you know about my debutante"
And she says, "Your debutante just knows what you need
But I know what you want"
Oh, Mama, can this really be the end
To be stuck inside of Mobile
With the Memphis blues again

Now the bricks lay on Grand Street
Where the neon madmen climb
They all fall there so perfectly
It all seems so well timed
And here I sit so patiently
Waiting to find out what price
You have to pay to get out of
Going through all these things twice
Oh, Mama, is this really the end
To be stuck inside of Mobile
With the Memphis blues again

Being stuck inside my apartment (check the short InstaGram clip filmed by Frank), has kept me busy going through and re-organizing my vast collection of LP’s, CD’s, singles, DVD’s, music mags, books, etc. I found more than 100 double of LP’s which I will bring to the store to sell. I have been listening to mostly records, many records of all different types of music. Here’s a short list of what I’ve heard over the past week & a 1/2: Jan Johnansson (extraordinary Swedish jazz pianist who passed in 1968, an old customer of ours sent me a dozen of his records), Richard & Mimi Farina, Ahemi Kuniyoshi-Kuhn/Marcio Mattos/Eddie Prevost, Piirpauke, Urban Sax, Lard Free, Grateful Dead and Bob Dylan boots, Keith Cross & Peter Ross, Glenn Phillips, Gerry Mulligan, Festival Mimi, Pop Group, Rip, Rig & Panic… and lots more to go through. I also go back to some old standards to make me feel better like Dylan, Neil Young, Cream, Jimi Hendrix and Fela…. take care, Bruce at DMG

*******************
It has been a strange and scary week, especially as I (and everyone else) is stuck inside their homes, trying to stay safe, sane and healthy. Thanks to my employees/helpers, FRANK MEADOWS & CHARMAINE LEE, I have been able to keep busy at home, working on the newsletter and rarely good to the store (once a week just to pick up promos…). I feel good being at home, cleaning, cooking & eating better, still reorganizing my ridiculous collection, finding lists of double & triples on LP!Plus stretching, doing some yoga and dancing to some great sixties/seventies rock & soul also helps me to smile and feel better. WE WILL SURVIVE, although it is going to difficult to do this on just on minimal mail-order but we are trying. Below, is the first newsletter (ever?) to include no new discs. We are having a sale on many of the CD’s we have collected over the long haul. All are sealed or at least unplayed. Please check out the long list and purchase something if you can. You can also make a donation if you can afford it. Here’s our paypal address: ebay@downtownmusicgallery.com

Special thanks to Frank Meadows and Charmaine Lee for their help in keeping DMG going! Thanks to the many well wishers out who have been sending us their support with kind words and thoughts! I have been reading and responding to dozens of e-mails from everywhere and I can really feel the love of those who are part of the vast DMG Family! Good luck to everyone who is dealing with the current mess, here’s hoping we get through this together and celebrate for some better days to come. - BLG

The Downtown Music Gallery 29th Anniversary Celebrations will begin in 2020 & Will Continue throughout the year! May 1st is our Actual Anniversary! Every In-store throughout the Year Helps Celebrate the Spirit of Creative Music Performed Live!

At this point we’ve has a number cancellations due to the pandemic. We have no idea how long this will last but we hope to continue to survive and thrive once life is back to normal, if this will ever be the case. Things may change as things evolve so we won’t know until we se what happens and musicians & listeners decide to not participate to attend. Stay tuned.

THE SUNDAY NIGHT CONCERTS HERE AT DMG THAT HAVE BEEN GOING ON FOR THE BETTER PART OF (NEARLY) 29 YEARS THAT WE HAVE EXISTED HAVE BECOME AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE NYC UNDERGROUND/DOWNTOWN MUSIC SCENE. MORE & MORE I BEEN LOOKING FORWARD TO THESE WEEKLY SESSIONS WHICH SHOW CREATIVE MUSIC OFTEN AT IT BEST. I/WE NEVER KNOW WHAT WILL OCCUR OTHER THAN GIVING FOLKS AN OPPORTUNITY TO EXPRESS THEMSELVES IN A FRIENDLY ENVIRONMENT AND SEE & HEAR WHAT HAPPENS. SOMETIMES IT WORKS, SOMETIMES IT DOESN’T, SOMETIMES IT IS JUST GREAT AND OCCASIONALLY IT IS TRANSCENDENT! SUNDAY NIGHT IS THE END OF THE WEEK AND THE BEGINNING OF THE NEXT WEEK. SINCE I RARELY GO TO TEMPLE (it closed some 20 years ago), I MISS THE OPPORTUNITY TO PRAY WITH OTHER HUMANS WHO ARE PART OF A COLLECTIVE TRIBE. I FIND THAT CREATIVE MUSIC EVENTS HAVE TAKEN THE PLACE OF THE COMMUNAL EXPERIENCE: SHARING THOUGHTS, FEELINGS AND HOPE FOR BETTER DAYS. THERE HAS BEEN NO GIGS AT DMG FOR JUST 2 WEEKS AND ALREADY I MISS THESE EVENTS SO VERY MUCH. I RARELY TAKE THEM FOR GRANTED AND I CAN’T WAIT UNTIL WE TO GET BACK TO CHECKING THEM OUT ONCE MORE. I’VE GOTTEN A FEW NOTES FROM SOME OF OUR REGULARS SO I KNOW I AM NOT ALONE. I NO LONGER BELIEVE IN HAVING PRIDE IN WHATEVER TRIBE I AM SUPPOSED TO BE A PART OF, NO ONE GROUP IS REALLY CHOSEN. THE ONLY TRIBE I DO FEEL A PART OF IS THE ONE THAT IS INSPIRED OR UPLIFTED BY CREATIVE MUSIC OR CREATIVE ART OF DIFFERENT TYPES. LET’S LIFT A GLASS TO THE LIGHT AT THE END OF TUNNEL, WHEN THIS CURRENT NIGHTMARE ENDS AND WE CAN ALL HOLD HANDS AND HUG ONE ANOTHER AND EMBRACE PEACE, LOVE COMMUNION WITH THE INNER AND OUTER SPIRITS! - MC BruceLee

DMG is located at 13 Monroe St. (between Catherine & Market Sts) in a basement below a small gallery. Take the F train to East Broadway or the 6 train to  Canal or the B or D to Grand, or the M-15 bus to Madison & Catherine. Come on Down, the Sunday Music Series is Always Free & the Vibes are Always Cosy. You can check the weekly in-store sets through our Instagram feed. For the next month we have four triple bills in a row! More & more creative musicians want to play here at DMG and we are honored to have them. If you can, please do come down to capture the spirit of creative music live!

NO NEW THINGS THIS WEEK, BUT WE DO HAVE A LONG CD SALE LIST TO CHECK OUT!

Here is where we start to list New Music CD’s & Albums that have come in in the last week. Very little has come in, though. Most stores and many distributors are now closed and in hibernation. Hence, things are moving very slowly if at all. Instead of listing new things, we are having large CD sale. These are things that we have in some quantity. There are perhaps 100 items on this list, some we have listed previously and many we haven’t listed since we first got them in. Many rarities and many gems. Everything on this list is something I remember digging when I last heard it. PLEASE take some time and check out this list. Please order something so we can survive and keep going. This is what all of us serious listeners want. We are currently at the store just 2-3 days a week doing mail-order only so please be patient. If you can’t find something on this list, you can always check out items in the DMG database on-line or go through some of the old newsletters that you keep in a file somewhere, waiting for the time to check out those newsletters. You now have that time so do it! If you can’t find anything to purchase, you can always make a donation of any size. Totally up to you. We know that this newsletter goes out to 6,000 readers. And we often get lots of good wishes from those who read and are inspired by what they read. We do appreciate all of you, you are our family.

JOACHIM BADENHORST / GUILLERMO CELANO / MARCOS BAGGIANI - Lili & Marleen (Clean Feed 476; Portugal) Featuring Joachim Badenhorst on clarinets & tenor sax, Guillermo Celano on electric guitar and Marcos Baggiani on drums. A few years back, Amsterdam-based, IPC reedsman, Michael Moore, sent us a couple of discs by the Celano-Baggiani Group of which he has a guest member. I wasn’t familiar with either of these two Italian musicians who are currently living in Amsterdam. I do know of Joachim Badenhorst, pretty well since he has lived in NY for a while and has some three dozen recordings with: Han Bennink, John Butcher and Frantz Loriot, besides his own numerous dates as a leader. Each member of the trio contributes a song or two, as well as having a few group improvs. The opening track is the title piece, a stunning intro with Badenhorst’s sprawling tenor riding on the waves provided by the circular, simmering guitar and drums underneath. Badenhorst is young master on bass clarinet, so he is at the center of “Inferno Boby”, while the guitar and drums lock into a pulsating repeating pattern while he solos. “Los Gauchos” is a sort of slow, slightly funky blues, that I find most endearing, sort of like a theme from late night film noir that would one humming along. The guitar and drums are consistently a marvel since they create such lush and evocative moods, like a cushion to quietly settle into. Even without the use of a bass player, this trio do a fine job nifty songs, each of which conjure up another scene or story. Another tasty morsel from the Clean Feed Menu. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

ALBERT BEGER / GERRY HEMINGWAY - There's Nothing Better To Do (OutNow 07; USA)Featuring Albert Beger on tenor & soprano sax and Gerry Hemingway on drums. When Israeli saxist Albert Beger sent us two discs of his trio with William Parker and Hamid Drake quite a while back, I was surprised that I hadn't heard of him before, since both discs were pretty amazing and now sadly out-of-print. This disc was recorded live in Tel Aviv in November of 2011 and again Mr. Beger takes strides as a world-class free improviser. This time Beger has chosen another strong partner, American percussionist Gerry Hemingway, now living and teaching in Switzerland. Starting quietly, the duo slowly build from a modest sparseness with Mr. Beger on soprano sax. Each piece ascends as the tension and fire erupt together, notes and flames dancing around one another. Beger shifts between two different themes on "Let Go of Your Mind", one of which has a sort of melody that feels good to repeat again and again. Whether playing on drums or cymbals or with small percussives (like a shaker), Gerry is a well-matched partner who listens closely and blends perfectly. Rather than going for that over-the-top free/jazz insanity, the duo often show some restraint and play with some slow-burning intensity. Even with the flame on low, it still feels good to hear these men connect on common ground. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, Downtown Music Gallery

DAVE BURRELL & DAVID MURRAY - Brother to Brother (Gazell 4006; USA)
CD Sale $8

DAVE BURRELL - The Jelly Roll Joys (Gazell 4003; USA) "One of the great under-recognized pianists in jazz, Dave Burrell was an integral member of several important bands, including those led by Archie Shepp and David Murray. He has always been at home with the entire history of the music, from ragtime to free improvisation. Here, playing solo, he pays homage to the seminal composer Jelly Roll Morton in a recital that includes a couple of Burrell's own pieces, a few by Coltrane and Parker, as well as several of Morton's lesser-known works. His selection of rags is very perceptive, including a couple of utterly gorgeous compositions containing what their author referred to as "the Spanish tinge," a rarely discussed influence on early jazz. Even on the two Coltrane pieces, "Giant Steps" and "Moment's Notice," he manages to subtly infuse them with raglike aspects and rhythms while miraculously maintaining their boppish integrity. Burrell's own songs are no less delightful and go far in buttressing his reputation as an imaginative composer as well as a rich and deeply melodic pianist. The Jelly Roll Joys is highly recommended both as a wonderful recital and as one of the most rewarding albums by a musician deserving far greater renown." - Brian Olewnick, AMG

RAHN BURTON TRIO With WALTER BOOKER / JIMMY COBB - The Poem (DIW 610; Japan) Rahn Burton (p), Walter Booker (b), Jimmy Cobb (ds). Recorded at Sound On Sound, NYC on June 8, 1992. A knockout - a pianist who deftly combines the percussive with the lyrical, the new with the standard! Rahn Burton, who worked considerably with Rahsaan Roland Kirk, has made a sterling trio album backed by two of the all-time great rhythm players. They tackletunes by Monk, Hoagy Carmichael, Irving Berlin plus some of Burton's own appealing swingers.

EUGENE CHADBOURNE / DAVID SAIT - Auspicious Fish: Postage Paid Duets Vol 1 (Apprise 02; Canada)This duo collaboration consists of Eugene Chadbourne on banjo & guitar and David Sait on guzheng (Chinese koto-like instrument). This unlikely "duet" was created independently and then mixed by John Oswald. There are both solo extractions and long distance duets. Guzheng master David Sait's first solo extraction is a superb but slightly weird, harp-like wonder. The first long duo is called "Catalysts & Tourguides" and it is shows how well the guzheng and banjo work together, their sounds are actually quite similar. The duo take their time and spin an integrated web of activity with layers of acoustic strings tapped and struck so that it is hard to tell who is doing what. The fact that the volume is kept a more restrained level helps us to appreciate the more subtle interaction by focusing more closely on what's going on. Eugene's "Solo Extraction B" is an intense improvisation for solo banjo with high speed, note-bending and intricate lines explored. With each duo both musicians go further into interplanetary interaction, leaving us at the edge of our seats as the gems below the surface are slowly revealed. The final "Solo Extraction C" for guzheng is more calm yet quietly expressive and quite lyrical at times. The last duet is the title track and it is an extraordinary journey together with a moderately paced yet spirited dialogue, ideas bouncing back and forth in a most organic way. Both Eugene Chadbourne and David Sait have done an amazing job of providing us with some consistently fascinating acoustic solo and duo excursions. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, Downtown Music Gallery

CONTRABAND [WILLEM VAN MANEN / PAUL VAN KENEMADE / ECKARD KOLTERMANN / et al] - The Painter (Attacca 2496; Netherlands)Contraband are a 14-piece jazz ensemble led by trombonist Willem van Manen and this appears to be their sixth disc, five of which were on the BVHaast label. Although I am not familiar with most of the names on this disc (except for Eckard Koltermann), I found the writing & playing to be quite spirited and crafty. Mr. Manen wrote half of the pieces here with one song by ICP's Guus Janssen, one by Koltermann and two by Frans Vermeerssen, another name that sounds vaguely familiar. Contraband sound like they have studied the history of modern big band jazz music as they draw from different sources from Duke Ellington to Thad Jones and beyond. On "Contrast", pianist Stevko Busch plays an exquisite, minimal solo while the horns simmer around him. For Koltermann's "Just a Second", the band keeps shifting between different styles seamlessly in between short, inspired solos from Loet van der Lee on trumpet and Vermeerssen on tenor sax. Although "Spooky" is based on a reggae melody when it begins, when it speeds up it turns into an infectious swinging groove with a great bari solo from Koltermann. Guus Janssen's "OJ Muziek" features some superb clarinet from Patrick Hagen and swell, tight, swinging playing from the rest of the band evoking the big bands sounds of the 1930's with a more modern looseness. I love the way "Droom" starts off dreamy and calm before it eventually launches into a smokin' big band conclusion, both free and tight simultaneously. "Wetterville" features some sublime muted horns and hypnotic flutes playing over a lovely West African rhythm. The soulful alto solo by Paul van Kemenade is as good as it gets. Considering that I hadn't heard of this band before hearing this great disc, I must admit that I was swept away throughout by the inventiveness of the writing and consistently solid playing. Time to contact BVHaast for their back catalogue. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, Downtown Music Gallery

AXEL DORNER / LEONEL KAPLAN / DIEGO CHAMY - Absence (Creative Sources 034; Portugal) For 'Absence', Leonel also works with another trumpeter, Axel Dorner and Argentina-based percussionist Diego Chamy. It was recorded in Buenos Aires in 2003. This is lower-case improv at its finest. Axel and Leonel explore similar terrain, twisted, breath-like sounds that don't sound very much like a trumpet with minimal percussion. Smears, rubbed cymbals, eerie, ghost-like effects - It is difficult to tell who is doing what since many of the sounds are percussion-like and carefully placed. The trumpeters occasionally make growling or other odd vocal sounds into the trumpets and mouthpieces. At one point, it sounds as if a kettle is about to boil or like the radiators in my old apartment hissing. On "Asn'th", it sounds like the drones are made by electronics, as they slowly are twisted into odd shapes. What I find most fascinating are the textures of the different sounds that the trio comes up with. It sounds like a symphony of radiators with shimmering percussive sounds weaved together into a mesmerizing tapestry. This is one of those discs that must be listened to with no distractions since there is such an attention to detail. Take your time and listen closely, the rewards are great. - BLG

EYE CONTACT [MATT LAVELLE/MATT HEYNER/RYAN SAWYER] - War Rug (KMB 006; USA)Featuring Matt Lavelle on trumpet & bass clarinet, Matt Heyner on contrabass & Ryan Sawyer on drums. Matt Lavelle is one of my favorite folks, he exudes coolness and has the sly charm of an old hipster, even tough he is a young fellow. He has played here at DMG on numerous occasions, has guested with Other Dimensions in Music, often works with Ras Moshe and is with the Little Huey Creative Music Orchestra. In-demand bass great Matt Heyner works with Test & No Neck Blues Band and drummer Ryan Sawyer is another under-recognized talent who has recorded with Louie Belogenis on 'Twice Told Tales' (DIW). 'Making Eye Contact with God' is Matt's third date as a leader and he continues to grow in leaps. This is an inspired free/jazz date and these cats are cooking pretty quickly. Lavelle's tone on trumpet is assured and deals with a dynamic range of emotions and colors. This is a monstrous trio, the rhythm team pumping hard and quick underneath Matt's high flying playing. When Heyner takes his first solo, you know he means business as Ryan dances together with the bass. Soon Lavelle whips out his bass clarinet and talks in tongues as Heyner bows his bass, both of those low notes bending together as one, soon heading for those high notes and sailing towards the heavens. There is a righteous, organic flow to this music that moves in waves, winding up and down the hills and valleys, always together as a great focused trio. Ryan also a few superb solos throughout, adding another notch to this strong date. This CD is pretty long at 73 minutes but remains intense and creative throughout.

GORDON GRDINA TRIO With TOMMY BABIN/KENTON LOEWEN - ..If Accident Will (Plunge 82; Canada)Featuring Gordon Grdina on guitar, oud & compositions, Tommy Babin on bass and Kenton Loewen on drums. This is the fifth disc from Vancouver-based guitarist and oud player Gordon Grdina, if you count his ethnic/improv quartet called Sangha. What amazes me about Gordon is that he approaches each project differently, reinventing himself with each project. Commencing with "The Monk" this trio is soaring in a John McLaughlin/Bruce Eisenbeil sort-of way. Very intense, free yet completely focused. When the trio breaks into an incredible jazz/rockin' groove during the last minute of the opening piece, you just want to shout, "Holy sh*t!". This music blurs the line between fusion and freedom, it is fast and furious and tight at the same time.Contrabassist Tommy Babin, whom I remember from playing at the Guelph Fest is also a splendid bassist and is an integral part of this trio. Gordon is also a fine oud player and gets a chance to stretch out on a few of these pieces. Gordon takes him time on "Cobble Hill/Renunciation" with stark oud, minimal bass and delicate hands-on-drums. "Peripheral" keeps shifting between a quick tempo and a twisted, complex shape-shifting structure that is hard to believe. Sometimes it is difficult to believe that music as great as this is not so well distributed or even noticed by the unwashed masses. Anyway, this is the guitar trio jazz/rock disc of the year so far! Maybe you thought that John McLaughlin was going to win for a change, well think again! - Bruce Lee Gallanter, Downtown Music Gallery

SYLVAIN KASSAP / BENJAMIN DUBOC  - Le Funambule (DarkTree 12; France) Featuring Sylvain Kassap on clarinet & bass clarinet and Benjamin Duboc on double bass & voice. I’ve long admired the work of French clarinetist, Sylvain Kassap, who has worked with Hamid Drake, Larry Ochs, Nicole Mitchell and Gunter ‘Baby’ Sommer. I recall a great set at the Vision Fest with the East-West Collective (w/ Ochs, Miya Masaoka & Xu Fengxia), as well as with a clarinet quartet at DMG from last year. French bassist Benjamin Duboc, I know less well although he has worked with Itaru Oki, Jean-Luc Guionnet and for Eliane Radigue. Things begins with soft spoken word vocal sounds and hushed clarinet fragments. Soon mysterious bowed bass & bass clarinet intertwine, moving carefully around one another. There two instruments work immensely well together, sounding similar in those low, dark, warm, wooden timbres. At one point, the duo move into what sounds like a blues segment, which fits just right with what came before and after, as far as the ongoing vibe/flow. Both of these musicians are well-matched and cover similar sounds or tones. I like the way they seem to complete each other’s lines, often coming together and spinning in connected orbits. Although they are many moments of low key resolve, the sympathetic vibrations make this pretty enchanting. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

GEOFF KEEZER TRIO With JAMES GENUS / TONY REEDUS - World Music (DIW 609; Japan) Geoff Keezer (p), James Genus (b), Tony Reedus (ds), Rudy Bird (per). Recorded at Sound On Sound, NYC on January 5, 1992. Keezer first came to the attention of the jazz world as a teenage pianist in Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. He plays in the hard-bop tradition and has strongly developed as leader, pianist and composer. This recording from 1992 finds him in the company of two in-demand sidemen for great interpretations of classics and more of the leader's tunes. It's Only a Paper Moon by Harold Arlen, Black and Tan Fantasy by Duke Ellington, the traditional Black is the Color of My True Love's Hair and more.

FRANKLIN KIERMYER With LAWRENCE CLARK / DAVIS WHITFIELD / OTTO GARDNER - Closer to The Sun (Mobility 11016; USA) The classic Coltrane Quartet’s song started short and slowly go longer and longer throughout their live sets. None of the 13 songs here are very long, yet the intensity remains the same: close to boiling point. Legendary drummer Elvin Jones was an integral part of the Coltrane Quartet, his playing immensely powerful and completely unique. Mr. Kiermyer seems to be one of the few drummers who plays with similar power and creative spirit, yet he doesn’t really copy Jones, as much pick up where Mr. Jones left off. I found every song on this disc to me uplifting, inspiring and often with those modal-like melodies that stay with us long after the disc is over. Pianist, Davis Whitfield sounds especially superb on “Grace”, playing those magical, McCoyish waves. Much of the music here has a calm, peaceful center, like floating in a dreamworld where the usual anxiety of life has faded away. Eventually, the quartet erupts on “Emancipation Proclamation”, the power and the fury reaching higher and higher. Although none of the 13 songs are longer than eight minutes, the quartet still reach for that inner fire, burning no matter how long or short… - BLG/DMG

BILL LASWELL/TETSU INOUE/ATOM HEART - Second Nature (Submeta 9802; USA) High quality of Laswell's releases on the long defunct Submeta label is reflected here in this truly wonderful entry into electronic ambient landscapes! Second Nature is a prime Bill Laswell excursion into the murkiest depths of ambient experimentalism, meaning there's no danceable beats, no hummable grooves, and virtually no firm melodic ground for listeners to grab hold of. That said, patient listening will be rewarded in due time. The 28-minute "Synthetic Forest" opens with a whispered hint of a distant soundscape -- gurgles, blips, and bleeps that are almost, but not quite, there. You're 12 minutes in before being startled by a recognizable beat on the horizon, 14 minutes before Laswell's subterranean bass appears like a lumbering rhino rumbling in your direction. This is some seriously crazy, experimental stuff; a bit too subtle for casual listeners, but an interesting ride for those passengers willing to ride it out to the end of the line.

MATT LAVELLE - Cuica In The Third House [LTD ED] (KMBjazz 12; USA) This is the Matt Lavelle solo project with Matt on trumpet & bass clarinet as well as with everything else (vocals & percussion). A most delightful indulgence from our favorite local hipster, cool dude and jazzbo. Matt layers his trumpets, bass clarinets and voices to show his inner/outer world. Each piece comes with an explanation of the philosophy behind the music and words presented. I dig the way Matt layers the trumpet and bass clarinet into a new combination of sounds and harmonies. A most personal view of Matt Lavelle's world, up close and well transformed. - BLG

IGOR LUMPERT & INNERTEXTURES With GREG WARD / CHRIS TORDINI / KENNY GROHOWSKI / et al - Eleven (Clean Feed 462; Portugal) Featuring: Igor Lumpert on tenor sax, Greg Ward on alto sax, Chris Tordini on double bass and Kenny Grohowski on drums plus Jonathan Finlayson on trumpet and John Ellis on bass clarinet. "Here is the third reprise of Igor Lumpert’s project Innertextures, but this time (after “Innertextures” and “Innertextures Live”), not with the previous trio format. The band with Chris Tordini and Nasheet Waits is now a quartet, with Greg Ward playing the second saxophone and Kenny Grohowski taking the drum sticks, and in “Eleven” there’s two guests summing up: trumpeter Jonathan Finlayson on a couple of tracks and bass clarinetist John Ellis playing on another one (in the past, Lumpert had the collaboration of musicians like Robert Glasper and Jacob Bro, and even his trio was once formed with Matt Brewer and Tommy Crane). Important to notice is the fact that Lumpert, Tordini, Grohowski and Finlayson studied together at the New School of Music. The musical formula remains the same, but now more matured and with other nuances: a kind of «hyper-mode bop» with funk elements and some aspects of Slovenian folk music (he was born in Novo Mesto), as the specialized press noted, with «odd-metered rhythmic pacing and mesmeric variances in pitch». For more than 15 years living in New York, Lumpert’s jazz is sounding more American than ever, full of verve and groove, but without losing its “trademark” of complexity and unpredictability. Maybe the most internationally recognized of all Slovenian jazz musicians, this former pupil of Chico Hamilton and Billy Harper who played with luminaries like John Abercrombie and Sonny Simmons is really the face of the present universal dimension of this music genre, with each composition brilliantly confirming that status. A must listen, must have record, marvelously produced by Robert Sadin."

LUNAR ENSEMBLE [aka LUNAR BEAR ENSEMBLE: LUNAR [JOHN RICHEY]/DAVE 'SLUGGER' VIZTHUM/TOM DiELLO/DON PRESTON et al] - Off Beat: Lunar Ensemble Live (MuWorks 1017; USA) The Lunar Ensemble is/are a great improv/rock band that back Lunar with a great groove and two or three inventive guitarists creating riveting textures and occasional solos. This was true of their earlier recorded gem for MuWorks (which is long out-of-print), live gigs and is still the case with the current version of the band found here. Their old classic 'Bleeding Liberal' is redone here and still rings true, the beat is slammin' and the guitars still hypnotic. On 'Meteors I & II', Andre, Sluggo and Don Preston, weave cosmic waves with their guitars and synth. Lunar's words create two worlds superimposed over one another: one, where the heavenly bodies hang in the heavens and the other where we watch the heaven bodies of our mortal comrades connect. Although the inner notes only list four tracks, there are actually twice as many. The band gets a chance to cut loose and jam on some steaming grooves on the other four tracks with some molten guitars and uplifting rhythm teamwork as Lunar continues to paint the sad realities of our and his difficult world/life. The last four parts make up one long and winding story, the groove evolves organically as Lunar takes us through scenery and a long, tortured, life-like journey. In this pre-packaged modern world, where few folks read books and most just watch TV, read the bad news in a newspaper and communicate via e-mail and cell-phones, storytelling has become a long art form. John Richey and the Lunar Ensemble do a fine job of captivating us with their version of a modern tale and create the scenery to match the images described within. Welcome back Lunar, you and your fine crew did it again!- BLG

MARIE McAULIFFE'S ARKSEXTET With ROB HENKE/RICH PERRY/CHRIS WASHBURNE/DAVID HOFSTRA/KEVIN NORTON//BURT BACHARACH - Refractions: Plays The Music Of Burt Bacharach (Avant 070’ Japan) One of the highlights of Tzadik's Burt Bacharach tribute from 1996, Marie McAuliffe follows up her brilliant arrangement of I Say A Little Prayer with an entire album of Bacharach material featuring her exciting unit, the ArKsextet. More and more known in the jazz world as a distinctive pianist and arranger, Marie's unique take on a Bacharach's melodic masterpieces swing like crazy, taking unexpected twists and turns while still remaining faithful to the Bacharach originals. ArKsextet: Marie McAuliffe (p), Rob Henke (tp, flh), Rich Perry (ts), Chris Washburne (tb, tu), Dave Hofstra (b), Kevin Norton (ds, vibes). "I recall John Zorn mentioning how much he dug Marie's lovely arrangement of "I Say a Little Prayer" on his Bacharach tribute cd of last year and that he had asked her to do an entire release of Bacharach tunes. Well here it is & what a luscious work of art it surely is. This CD features more of Marie's excellent arrangements and warm, lyrical playing of her superb ensemble. Elegant, enchanting and even haunting at times, Marie's musicians lift these tunes to a higher plane, especially the ever-melodic tone & grace of Rob Henke on trumpet & flugelhorn and Rich Perry on tenor sax. Marie constantly captures the elegant/innocent spirit of the 60's when these songs were pop hits, occasionally opening them up to unexpected directions. "In the Land of Make Believe" opens with a slow, lovely tenor bit before it erupts into a burning, super quick tempo rush, but then slows again with more delicious tenor sounds. It is long & winding version of "The Look of Love" that is this release's real gem! A marvelous arrangement of shifting tempos and textures, mysterious Coltrane-like episode for the tenor, and amazing horns only sections. Certainly the most gorgeous release on Avant, Zorn was right once more. Marie's fine, slightly psychedelic b&w artwork adorn the cover and show another of her talents." - BLG

ANTHONY MOORE - Reed Whistle And Sticks (Blueprint 281 VPT; UK) Recorded in 1972, part of a trilogy of pre-Slapp Happy experimental albums. ' "Reed, Whistle and Sticks" was designed to explore a further, obvious attitude of repetition, which is its function in relationship with memory. Less obvious perhaps is the idea of memories that are unconciously formed, memories that are not immediately perceived. I prepared a surface of different materials on the studio floor; wood, glass, cloth, metal and plastic. Next I took a handful of bamboo sticks numbering around fifty and each a differing thickness and length, say between eight and twelve centimetres. A pair of microphones were placed sterephonically just above and to each side of the surface of materials. Holding my hands out in front of me, I proceeded to let the sticks fall slowly through my fingers and onto the prepared surface below. I recorded a series of 'drops' each lasting roughly between twelve and twenty five seconds before the sticks came to rest. A selection of these "drops" were then looped so that the sound was continuous, the repetition disguised as a linear, changing flow of events, rather than a repeating cycle.' - Anthony Moore

DICK MORRISSEY [from If] / JIM MULLEN / CHRIS BOLTON / TONY LEVIN (UK drummer] - Live At Jazz Club Friday, Barton's Arms 1986 (Rare Music 038; UK) Dick Morrisey on tenor sax, Jim Mullen on guitar, Chris Bolton on bass and Tony Levin on drums. This was recorded live at the Barton Arms pub in Birmingham, UK during a weekly jazz series that was curated by bassist Chris Bolton and legendary British jazz drummer Tony Levin. Dick Morrissey was one of the best saxists to emerge from the British scene during the 1960's. He founded the great jazz/rock band If with Terry Smith in 1970 and continued to evolve in the jazz/rock vein with guitarist Jim Mullen. Scottish guitarist Jim Mullen had already played with Pete Brown, Brian Auger (Oblivian Express) and Vinegar Joe, before hooking up with Morrissey for a longtime collaboration until fell sick and passed away in 2000 at 60. Bassist Chris Bolton is another of the UK's undiscovered greats as well as a teacher and wife to Tony Levin. Tony Levin was one the best British jazz drummers for more than 45 years, having played with Tubby Hayes, Joe Harriott and Don Rendell in the sixties to being a founding member of Mujician (with Keith Tippett, Paul Dunmall & Paul Rogers) in the 1990's. His death last year (February of 2011) was a great loss to many of us. The quartet here plays just five songs but gets a chance to stretch out on each one. They play mostly standards like "Alfie" & "St. Thomas" (both by Sonny Rollins), "Au Privave" (Charlie Parker), "Too Late Now" and Don Grolnick's "Uncle Bob". All of the solos by Mullen on guitar and Morrissey on tenor sax are long, inspired and build to fine conclusions. The rhythm team is also wonderful, supportive and engaged throughout. "St. Thomas" has a wonderfully jubilant spirit which fueled by Levin's great groove as well as a swell tenor solo from Mr. Morrissey complete with some Rollins'-like quotes. The bebop standard, "Au Privave" is filled with some incredible, furiously paced solos from the guitar and sax with incredible, hard-swinging rhythm team support which evolves through a series tight, intricate hairpin turns. New York pianist and composer Don Grolnick was under-recognized by the jazz press but well regarded by fellow musicians. Both Morrissey and Mullen worked with Herbie Mann in NY in the late seventies and most likely checked out Grolnick. His song, "Uncle Bob" is a good choice as it is an undiscovered gem which the quartet sails though much to the delight of the audience. This is a particularly strong live date on many level and sound is well captured. Another treasure from the Rare Music label. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, Downtown Music Gallery

JONATHAN MORITZ / JAMES ILGENFRITZ / JOHN McLELLAN = TRIO CAVEAT - Compliments Of The Season [LTD Ed] (KMBjazz 16; USA)Featuring Jonathan Moritz on tenor & soprano sax, James Ilgenfritz on bass and John McLellan on drums. This is the second disc by Trio Caveat, the personnel is the same and it is nice to have bassist James Ilgenfritz back with us since his move to San Diego to study with Mark Dresser. I still haven't heard much from saxist, Jonathan Moritz, but drummer John McLellan can be heard playing with the Maneri's, Joe McPhee, Keith Yaun and Daniel Carter. Although this disc was recorded in a studio in April of 2006, the song titles deal with a Christmas theme. "Open Gifts" is slow moving, cautious and free. "Sleigh Ride" also uses a minimum of notes, softly unfolding like wisps of smoke from cigarette sitting in an ashtray. James' contrabass is often at the center of the activity here and he has a strong though relaxed sound. Even more calm is Jonathan's sax that seems to unfurl is slow-motion with a warm, round and haunting tone. Patience is required to enjoy this music since it does take its time unfold, a few notes at a time. The thing that works best is that warm, wooden tone of the tenor sax, James' selective contrabass and John's minimal drums, all come from the same place and move together, cautiously through a ghost-like landscape. - BLG

RAS MOSHE QUARTET With DAVE ROSS / SHAYNA DULBERGER / RASHID BAKR - Transcendence (KMBjazz 07; USA)This the 7th disc as a leader from our good friend and local jazz historian, Ras Moshe, featuring Ras on tenor sax and flute, Dave Ross on guitar, Shayna Dulberger on contrabass and Rashid Bakr on drums. I am not familiar with the guitarist, Dave Ross, on this disc, but Ms. Dulberger has been playing with Ras for the last year and seems to be involved in a few other projects. Rashid Bakr is certainly one of downtown's best drummers, having played with Other Dimensions in Music and for Cecil Taylor. Recorded & mixed exactly 3 months ago today (January 4th of this year), with pieces by Ras, two by Dave and one by Shayna. The title piece opens this disc and has a fine jazz melody that is easy to remember, quite a bit straighter than most discs by Mr. Moshe. Dave Ross takes a most impressive, free guitar solo that is overflowing with ideas. Ras has matured through the years and has made a most impressive free/jazz quartet effort that sounds powerful and inspired throughout. "Sun Room" has a warm and sunny melody with Dave playing some strong, hypnotic chords that build as Ras takes a powerful tenor solo. "Flute Piece for Charles Lloyd" begins with everyone playing bells, cymbals and small percussion as Ras plays some somber flute. "All Flow" features a most haunting melody with a fine bass solo from Shayna, a superb tenor solo from Ras and superb swirling drums from Rashid. Considering that I hadn't heard of guitarist Dave Ross before this disc, I must admit that he is one the best avant/jazz guitarists I've heard in a while. Both he and Ras work so well together, swirling their lines of notes around one another in an amazing well-connected tapestry. Acoustic bassist, Shayna Dulberger, is another important new musician to watch, she takes a number amazing solos on this disc that show her to be a new force to be reckoned with. What more can I say about the great Rashid Bakr, except that he is sadly under-recorded and plays wonderfully throughout this entire great disc. An excellent offering, from beginning to the righteous end. - BLG

MATT PIET & HIS DISORGANIZATION With JOSH BERMAN / NICK MAZZARELLA / TIM DAISY - Rummage Out (Clean Feed 465) Mr. Piet’s is a welcome approach, considering that one of the members of the new band Matt Piet & His Disorganization is the saxophonist Nick Mazzarella, often described as a direct heir of the illustrious altoists Eric Dolphy, Ornette Coleman, Henry Threadgill and Oliver Lake, and like them driven to “embody the history of jazz while pushing it forward into new realms” (Troy Dostert). The same characteristic defines cornet player Josh Berman, a player known to combine aspects of pre-bebop jazz with avant-garde experimentation, sometimes producing a strikingly dissonant New Orleans style. In this bass-less quartet, the drummer/percussionist is Tim Daisy, one of the most versatile rhythmitists in activity today, equally at ease with the fire music of Ken Vandermark and the electro-acoustic abstract explorations of Kyle Bruckmann. Chicago jazz is very much alive, and Rummage Out is fantastic proof.

ROB REDDY’S SLEEPING DOGS With CHARLES BURHAM/GUILLERMO E BROWN - Seeing By The Light Of My Own Candle (Knitworks 291; USA)…"RJOC" gets into a dirge-like, funeral-parade groove behind Brown's active but unobtrusive drums that strongly recall Henry Threadgill's sextet phase, with boozy lines and gospel inflections in Reddy's alto solo. Burnham's mandolin strums generate an old-timey banjo feel, and he takes a nice plucked solo with vaguely Eastern-flavored backing harmonies by Reddy and Carlson on the closing "Prayer III." The old Ornette Coleman principle of leaving the middle wide open rules here, but Sleeping Dogs fill up the open spaces with savvy and without overplaying. Rob Reddy shows he's an intriguing composer and very democratic bandleader in a different context on Seeing by the Light of My Own Candle, an excellent disc that also has the presence of Charles Burnham, a far-too-rare occurrence, to recommend it. ~ Don Snowden, AMG

ADAM RUDOLPH / GO: ORGANIC ORCHESTRA - Thought Forms (Meta/Ruby 18) Considering how many musicians Adam has at his disposal, much of this music is minimal and selectively painted. The more we listen, the more (inner) connections we hear within the framework. When the tambura and sinister bass comes in on "Golden", it is almost too much. An organic orchestra is what Adam Rudolph calls it and that is just what it is. And quite a magical one at that! - BLG

ADAM RUDOLPH / JOSEPH BOWIE // IgBo DUO - Good Medicine (Meta 016) "Atmos" is filled with suspense and natural spirits, it is like opening the door to another dimension and slowly walking in. It feels weird yet familiar, as if we have been here before but we can't pinpoint when or here that was. Due to the careful and expansive production here, this disc has a magical sound. It has a way of transforming the everyday stress and strain into a more positive, healing space. Joe Bowie adds his infectious, earthy voice to the great groove song, "Y-Do-U Treat Me So Bad". There ain't nothing like a disc that makes you feel go to be alive! We certainly need more of that! - Bruce Lee Gallanter, Downtown Music Gallery

AKIRA SAKATA / GIOVANNI DI DOMENICO - Iruman (Mbari Musica 21; Earth) "I had a conversation with Henry Kaiser a few weeks ago (3/11/15] about a trip he had to Japan and playing Haino Keiji and Akira Sakata at two different gigs. He mentioned that playing with Mr. Sakata was an incredible experience, one of his favorite sets in recent memory. This is what Kaiser has to say, "Sakata is one of the greatest individual stylists of the alto sax; he is one of the few in a class with Ornette Coleman or Jimmy Lyons. He can also play both more lyrically and more out, at the same time, than just about anyone else that I can think of." I've listened to this CD several times this week and believe it is one of the finest improvised duos I've heard in a long while. There is something magical about this that I can't really put my finger on but it truly touches me." - BLG

UDO SCHINDLER & ERIC ZWANG ERIKSSON - Poetry??? Ein Wurfelwurf (FMR 550; UK) Featuring: Udo Schindler on alto sax, bass clarinet & euphonium and Eric Zwang Eriksson on drums & percussion. Since 2015, I’ve been reviewing discs from German reeds player, Udo Schindler, mostly working in duos and trios, most of which are on the FMR label. For this disc, Mr. Schindler works with a percussionist named Eric Zwang Eriksson, someone with whom I hadn’t heard before now. This disc was recorded live in Munich in January of 2018. There is something special going on here, the duo take their time to explore the various nuances of their instruments, bit by bit. I like the way things are often stripped down to a more skeletal level.Mr. Schindler concentrates on one reed instrument at a time: alto sax, bass clarinet and euphonium (baritone-voiced brass instrument). Although this is a live recording, the sound is clean and warm, all acoustic and well-captured. There is no free/jazz screaming or anything screeching whatsoever here. The duo remain consistently crafty throughout, an organic conversation between two close free spirits. - BLG

ERIC VON SCHMIDT With CHANCE BROWN / SAMUEL CHARTERS / PAUL GEREMIA - Baby, Let Me Lay it On You (Gazell 2013 USA) When Eric von Schmidt met Bob Dylan, the two traded harmonica licks, drank red wine and played croquet. Dylan eagerly absorbed von Schmidt's voluminous knowledge of music, including folk, country and the blues. "I sang [Dylan] a bunch of songs, and, with that spongelike mind of his, he remembered almost all of them when he got back to New York," von Schmidt said in The Boston Globe. This 1995 album is the last record he ever recorded, and the only one he made in the last thirty years of his life, focusing instead on his career as a painter from 1977 onwards. An extraordinary last stand - it must be heard! "To me, this sounds like the real thing. Von Schmidt was part of the Cambridge folk scene way back when and still sounds wonderful on this disc from 1995. Schmidt wrote most of the songs on this disc except for a few by Rev. Gary Davis, Dave Van Ronk and Leadbelly. Eric is backed by a small band of outlaws with harmony vocals, harmonica, cello, slide guitar and hand percussion. I dig Eric's liner notes which tell stories about each song. But most of all I dig all sixteen songs that he has chosen to do. An epic folk record anf they don't get much better than this." - BLG

PAUL SCHUBERT / UDO SCHINDLER - Parnassia Palustris (FMR 403) The duo take their time on the long opening piece, slowly bending each note together and apart, often playing in similar textures or timbres. At times ghost-like with buzzing notes, short drones, shifting sonorities, a variety of bent notes, bird-like sounds, different fragments assembled. Both of these players work well together and take their time to play in similar sonic terrains. They rarely go too far out, avoiding most of the extreme shrieks or scream that make sax duets often too much to deal with. There is something quite magical going on here. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

BRANDON SEABROOK With MARIKA HUGHES / EIVIND OPSVIK / CHUCK BETTIS / SAM OSPOVAT / DAVE TREUT - Die Trommel Fatale (New Atlantis 050; USA) What is most interesting here is the way that Seabrook uses the talents of each musician. On “Shamans Never R.S.V.P.”, the blend of distant operatic vocals, orchestral string(s) and minimal eerie guitar are most effective at creating a haunting terrain. Perhaps the hidden gem on this disc is the work of former DMG manager, Chuck Bettis. Often under-utilized, Mr. Bettis adds his sharp, twisted vocal sounds and laptop electronics at select moments on this disc. Ms. Hughes, Mr. Bettis and Mr. Seabrook are mostly what makes this disc so astonishing, consistently spirited and focused. And perhaps a bit scary at times as well. This is indeed my favorite CD of the week, although I still have to work my way through more than a dozen Clean Feed discs. - Jeeez, will wonders never cease!?! - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

MATTHEW SHIPP / GUILLERMO E BROWN - Telephone Popcorn (NuBop 04; Italy) On "Escape from Tomorrowland" Matt plays some lovely, melancholy chords while Guillermo adds some more twisted beats or percussion samples to the brew. For "The Everlasting Sun," Guillermo takes Matt's piano and manipulates its sound in a variety of weird ways, bending notes inside-out and often sounding like a jewelry box melody breaking down. This piece is somewhat disturbing at times, yet most effective at creating a new alien world were Sun Ra would feel at home. "Until We Meet Again" consists of Matt playing a series of somber, haunting sounds while Guillermo quietly manipulates those sounds and adds some subtle grooves. "Melt to Dream" brings things to grand conclusion by adding a layer of sly static to Matt's hypnotic repeating lines. Quite a strong combination of talents for something called "Telephone Popcorn". - BLG

MIKE SOPKO / BILL LASWELL / THOMAS PRIDGEN - Sopko/Laswell/Pridgen (Self-Released; USA) Mr. Laswell’s dreamy, hypnotic bass is featured on “Daybreak” while Sopko also creates layers of watery, cascading shimmers. Each member of the trio gets a chance to steer a couple of pieces, by kicking them off and providing the central riff/direction. On a piece called “Acres”, Mr. Laswell’s quick spiraling wah-wah bass and Mr. Pridgen’s laid-back drums provide a cosmic cushion for several alien (Frippish) guitars. Even better is “Airplane Mode”, where Laswell’s furious bass is at the center of explosive trio with Michael Lewis’s sax also spinning along. Mr. Sopko plays acoustic guitar on occasion, adding bits of subtle spice a the right moments. Martin Dosh’s electric keyboards are also used as selective sonic seasoning at just the right moments. On a song called “Praxis”, Sopko plays some astounding high-speed Buckethead-like lines, which makes sense since the band Praxis featured Buckethead and Mr. Laswell. Mike Sopko’s daredevil, diverse guitar playing are featured throughout this disc, yet always working sympathetically with equally ultra-creative rhythm team and their guests. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

CHRIS SPEED/SIMON JERMYN/LANDER GYSELINCK / HOWARD PEACH - Howard Peach (Dewerf 129; EEC)Howard Peach is Chris Speed on tenor sax, Simon Jermyn on electric bass and Lander Gyselinck on drums. Downtown sax great Chris Speed certainly needs no intro since he has been an integral part of the Downtown Scene since moving here more than two decades back. Irish bassist/composer Simon Jermyn is an unsung hero of the electric bass who has worked with Joachim Badenhorst & Loren Stillman and has a fine solo bass & guitars disc out that you must hear. I had not heard of Belgium drummer Lander Gyselinck before this but it turns out that he leads several of his own bands. Mr. Gyselinck is the producer of this disc while all of the pieces except one were written or improvised by all members of the trio together. On the opening piece, "Lausanne", there is a sublime, subdued vibe which feels good, calming down of the spirits. Mr. Gyselinck does a fine job keeping the flow burning softly with mostly mallets and brushes. "Hidden Word" deals with the spooky sounds of rubbed cymbals, somber sax and bass drones and is filled with suspense. There is something most enchanting in the sound of this trio and their laid back approach sense of restraint. On one of the last pieces, "Sycamore Sea", the trio do a fine job of playing free yet keeping things equally modest with screaming or urgency, balancing the extremes very well. There is something charming about this disc that can't easily be put into words. A kind of subtle magic that is unique amongst the more restless eruptions we usually offer. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

FRED VAN HOVE / PAUL LOVENS / MARTIN BLUME / ELS VANDEWEYER // QUAT - Live at Hasselt (NoBusiness CD 54; Lithuania) Recorded 18th June, 2011 at Kunstencentrum BELGIE & Cultuurplatform Motives for Jazz. Quat features Els Vandeweyer on vibes, Fred Van Hove on piano & accordion and Paul Lovens & Martin Blume on percussion. The instrumentation here is certainly unique: vibes/piano & accordion/two drummers. This quartet features two veteran Euro players: Fred Van Hove (with Brotzmann, Dunmall & several solo efforts) and Paul Lovens (Schlippenbach, Cecil Taylor & Dr. Chadbourne). I hadn't heard of their vibes player, Ms. Els Vandeweyer, before this but Martin Blume has worked with Frank Gratkowski, Luc Houtkamp & Phil Minton. This sounds like an all improv set and it is consistently fascinating. Free yet tight and focused. Since each member of the quartet is playing a percussion instrument (of sorts), there is a great deal of intense, spirited interplay. I had the good fortune to hear the legendary European pianist Fred Van Hove play duos with Lou Grassi twice last year. Mr. Van Hove is incredible and adds his unique touch and creativity throughout this disc. The interaction between the piano and vibes is especially magical as well as both drummers also add their own unique approach. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

There is nothing quite like it that I have heard before -- it is timeless, breathing deeply and exhaling showers of snow, endless circles, mirrors, spirals, the sea. When Jozef plays the lute, he pours out endless space. What can I say but let the rain come, close your eyes and watch the stars fall and rise and fall again." - From liner notes by David Tibet

JOS ZWAANENBURG - 20 Odd Years: Music For Flute(s) & Live Electronics (FMR 316; UK) Dutch flautist Jos Zwaanenberg has been experimenting with electronics as an extension of his flute playing. This disc features nine British composers who have written for Mr. Zwaanenburg during a twenty year span. Although I was only familiar with two of the composers listed on the disc (Stephen Montague & Jonty Harrison), I found this disc to be consistently fascinating. Each composer provided a different challenge and way of manipulating the flute and/or using diverse electronics. This disc is too long to describe all of the great pieces that are performed here but I remain overwhelmed by much of this. - BLG

1000 [JAN KLARE / BART MARIS / WILBERT DE JOODE / MICHAEL VATCHER] - (Shoe) (Red Toucan 9343; Canada) 1000 have a tightly wound group sound, listening and responding quickly. The instrumentation is similar to the original Ornette quartet and they seem to be influenced at times. The group improvs are short and do a good job of balancing the diverse written material. I like the way "Welt" starts off slowly and then switches directions and tempos with unexpected results. The construction of each written piece is different giving the quartet challenges to play through. Sometimes Mr. Klare will write some bent harmonies for both horns as well as having them complete each other's odd lines. 1000 is/are a consistently interesting quartet that keep evolving and getting better with each release. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, Downtown Music Gallery

ATTENTION ALL CREATIVE MUSICIANS OUT THERE, Around the world.

If you have a link, for some music that you are working on and want to share it with the folks who read the DMG Newsletter, please send the link to DMG at DMG@Downtownmusicgallery.com. Many of us are going stir crazy staying at home so if you want to inspire us and help us get through these difficult times, please show us what you got. Two of these came today, from Ingrid Laubrock and Henry Kaiser and are listed below.

STILL STIR CRAZY AFTER ALL THESE YEARS!

This is the section where I usually recommend upcoming concerts in the NYC area. As far as I can tell there are no upcoming shows anywhere around here, except perhaps on-line. All places I usually frequent are now closed for the foreseeable future. And everyone is worried about the near future, their health and their sanity for their friends and family. I am trying to come up with something inspirational to put out there but I am also very worried about myself, the store, all of the creative musicians that we need and support, as well as everyone else who has lost their jobs.

I have been at home at my old apartment in New Jersey, cleaning, reorganizing my collection, finding lots of doubles, listening to dozens of records, CD’s,cassettes and DVD’s. And working on my ongoing series of discographies and assorted music lists.

Over the past week or so a number of musicians have been putting up some music on-line for anyone to check out. I know that many of us are going a bit stir crazy so it is time to do some soul searching and serious listening. Here is a list of some music links to check out:
