The Passing of Another Downtown Giant: STEVE DALACHINSKY - 1946 - 2019

Early on Monday morning of this week, I sat in front of my computer screen at home and was overwhelmed with emotion. The previous week had been hellish and I was trying to not let it get me too down, I was weeping and couldn’t stop. My good friend and Downtown concert promoter, ERIC STERN, has been in the hospital for the past week with heart problems and no one was sure if he would make it through. On Saturday, Eric checked himself out of the hospital in order to attend a memorial for Mike Panico, another close friend who had passed away nearly a year ago. Playing at that concert was a trio: Kirk Knuffke, Fred Lonberg-Holm & Michael Bisio. Their CD, ‘Requiem for a New York Slice’ was dedicated to Mike. The concert was glorious for all in attendance, helping each of us to heal from the loss of our good friend.

Earlier that evening, Downtown Poet Laureate, STEVE DALACHINSKY, attended a Sun Ra Arkestra concert further downtown. On his way out, Steve said “Maybe I overdosed on Sun Ra”. Steve and his wife, Yuko Otomo, rushed out after the early evening gig to go out to Long Island where Steve was giving a poetry reading. Steve did give the reading and afterwards collapsed, having a massive stroke. He was taken to the hospital and put in intensive care where is stayed throughout the next day. He passed away early Monday morning around 5am. Everyone who knew him from around the world is still shocked. I had just hung out with him earlier that week at The Stone and he looked a bit tired but fine. He was 72 at the time of his passing.

I met STEVE DALACHINSKY and his wife Yuko Otomo at the Old Knitting Factory in the mid-eighties. The Old Knit, on Houston, was the focal point of the ever-evolving Downtown Scene. There was around a dozen folks who attended shows there several times a week (sometimes every night!). The core crew were Irving & Stephanie Stone (god-parents of the DT scene), Steve & Yuko and myself. I remember when saxist Charles Gayle arrived and played at the Knit every Monday for more than a year. The five of us were there every week, it was like a religious experience for us, a sort of Baptism by Fire Music and it brought us all closer together. The Downtown Scene erupted with dozens of musicians & bands: John Zorn, Fred Frith, Cecil Taylor, Derek Bailey… I soon found out that Steve was a poet since he was often writing during the sets we attended. When he began to get published and started doing poetry readings, I was impressed by his words. He worked hard to try to capture the essence of this music and did an extraordinary job. By attending so many gigs and sharing his excitement and enthusiasm, he nurtured the Downtown Scene, for the musicians and listeners both. He introduced Lars from the Silkheart label to Charles Gayle (and others), hence Mr. Gayle soon had several discs out on that label. The KnitWorks label and later Rogue Art also took his advice, releasing discs from artists he recommended. Steve also wrote liner notes for many CD’s on Rogue Art, something he got better it through the years. Something I always looked forward to.

The more I read Steve’s poetry, the more I admired his way with words. As a spoken word artist, Mr. Dalachinsky also evolved, working with many musicians who he admired: Matt Shipp, Joelle Leandre, Loren Connors, Federico Ughi, Dave Liebman, Talibam! and the Snobs. Mr. Dalachinsky also MC’d at the Vision Fest for many years, occasionally rustling the feathers of certain audience members with his sharp tongue. I always loved him like a brother, we were & still are kindred spirits, who long sought to be inspired by creative music, always searching for those transcendent moments… We will all miss seeing Steve at the many concerts he always attended. I want to send out some positive vibes to his wife, Yuko Otomo, who is also a poet & artist in her right. There will be a memorial for Steve Dalachinsky in a few months so stay tuned. I urge you to search out and read or listen to the poetry of Mr. Dalachinsky - a true New York original! - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

New Things This Week Begins with These Two CD’s from Tzadik:

JOHN ZORN - The Hermetic Organ Vol. 7 — St. John the Divine 2013 (Tzadik 8367; USA) "The imagination is not a state: it is the human existence itself." — William Blake. The Cathedral of St. John the Divine is a place of prayer, peace, spiritual renewal, and a temple to all who love the organ—and Zorn responds in kind with a remarkably soothing and peaceful exploration of lyricism and sonic variation. Interrupted only occasionally by a few trademark Phantom of the Opera explosions, the music is meditative, devotional, and at times achingly beautiful. Inspired by the mystical worlds of William Blake and the French organ traditions of Charles Tournemire and Olivier Messiaen, the music is an extended exploration in search of spiritual healing through sound.

JOHN ZORN // BANQUET OF THE SPIRITS with CYRO BAPTISTA/ BRIAN MARSELLA / SHANIR BLUMENKRANZ / TIM KEIPER - The Book Beri'ah Vol 9 — Yesod (Tzadik 5109; USA) “Working together since 1982, Cyro Baptista is one of Zorn's closest friends and collaborators. Banquet of the Spirits is his tight touring quartet of young lions and features Brian Marsella on keyboards & vibes, Shanir Ezra Blumenkranz on contrassbass and Tim Keiper on drums. Here they follow up their acclaimed CD of the Book of Angels Caym with a Latin Jazz-tinged interpretation featuring the rising star Brian Marsella on piano and keyboards.” - Tzadik notes
I’ve always felt that Banquet of the Spirits were one of the best of all the bands that have played the music of John Zorn. While three of the four members are leaders, composers and diverse collaborators on their own, their drummer, Tim Keiper, has come a long way since his days of taking lessons & inspiration from Joey Baron. Mr. Keiper has continually grown as a drummer, as well as learning to play a wealth of African instruments. Equally diverse is bassist Shanir Blumenkranz, who also plays gimbri (North African bass-like instrument) and oud. The other secret weapon here is keyboard wiz Brian Marsella, who plays in a variety of psych, rock, jazz, Klez and other bands. Since playing the Masada songbook as a soloist and as a trio member, his playing is consistently astonishing. With percussionist extraordinaire, Cyro Baptista, at their helm, this quartet just keeps getting better and better. The obi liner notes claim that this is some sort of “Latin jazz”, but there is quite a bit more going on here. The first thing we notice are those infectious Klez-like melodies that Mr. Zorn specializes in. “Iggulim” features some impassioned daredevil piano from Mr. Marsella who is burning throughout. Even when the quartet strips things down a more skeletal level, the sparkling piano and infectious percussion swirl together in a most magical way. This disc is one of the most enchanting, stunning and enticing of the many Book of Beri’ah series. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

TYSHAWN SOREY and MARILYN CRISPELL - The Adornment of Time (Pi Records 83; USA) Featuring Tyshawn Sorey on drums & percussion and Marilyn Crispell on piano. After hearing Marilyn Crispell’s playing with the classic Anthony Braxton Quartet of the late eighties/early nineties, drummer & composer, Tyshawn Sorey decided to reach out to Ms. Crispell to collaborate. They played together at the Creative Music Studio in Woodstock, NY, as well as at the old Stone in NYC. This disc captures their concert at the Kitchen in NYC in October of last year (2018). This disc starts off very quietly and remains that way for a period of time. This makes perfect sense since this is a partial direction that both of these musicians have evolved through over their more recent careers and musical journeys. The spirit and sparseness of Morton Feldman hovers close to the surface of both musicians playing. The set builds slowly, carefully, from sparse to somewhat more dense, expanding and contracting, an organic flow between two musicians who listen closely and respond as one force. There are some intense, explosive moments later in the session, which are exhilarating, the playing close-knit, thoughtful, careful, exquisite. Ms. Crispell plays elegantly inside the piano during the second half of this disc, her sound mysterious, nuanced, sublime. Mr. Sorey, who has grown as a musician and a composer throughout his career, is also in great form here. He is extremely tasteful, respectful and gracious. Eventually the duo build to a grand, rumbling conclusion, which erupts with power. Certainly one of the finest duo efforts we’ve heard in recent memory. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

REID ANDERSON / DAVE KING / CRAIG TABORN - Golden Valley is Now (Intakt 325; Switzerland) Feturing Craig Taborn on electric & acoustic pianos & synth, Reid Anderson on electric bass & electronics and Dave King on acoustic & electronic drums. This is a unique blend of musicians with the longtime rhythm team from the ever-popular Bad Plus (Mr. Anderson & Mr. King), along with in-demand keyboardist, Craig Taborn. Mr. Taborn himself seems to be involved in a large amount of collaborations: duos with Kris Davis & Vijay Iyer, trios with Ches Smith & Mat Maneri and Lotte Anker & Gerald Cleaver, various collaborations with Tim Berne & David Binney, as well as his various solo & leader projects. This took me a while to figure out. Although this reminds me of Kraftwerk and early Eno, there is something rather quaint yet still enchanting going on here. - BLG/DMG
“Reid Anderson, Dave King, Craig Taborn: the start of this intimate fellowship, also a narrative showing the invaluable role of friendship in music, is dated 1982. At the forefront are songs based on a pop sensibility, played live without sequencers and delivered by astounding improvisers and virtuoso instrumentalists, eschewing the muscular gestures of soloist free-styling and improvisatory furore and thus making wisdom audible: the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. They all put themselves in the service of compact songs in which the overall sound itself becomes the event.
The power and magic of this musical statement lies in the modus operandi of the soloists' restraint and a precise finger-tip feeling for the textures and dynamics of the songs. The fusion of acoustic and electronic elements, resonating melodies and a punchy production aesthetic characterize the band's sound. Whether calmly fluid or eruptive, ‘Golden Valley Is Now’s’ finely tuned music is beautifully direct and is a declaration of love to the song.” - Intakt

THE MESSTHETICS with ANTHONY PIROG / JOE LALLY / BRENDAN CANTY - Anthropocosmic Nest (Dischord 189; USA) "Out September 6th on Dischord Records, Anthropocosmic Nest is the second full-length by Washington, D.C.'s The Messthetics, who are Anthony Pirog, Joe Lally, and Brendan Canty. Recorded at the band's practice space throughout 2019, it's an album that more perfectly captures the trio's current live dynamic, complete with improvisational tangents, playful experimentation, and cathartic sprawl. When The Messthetics recorded their debut album in 2017, the trio had only done a handful of shows and had yet to fully find its footing on stage. In a way, those compositions were a template for the band that Pirog, Lally, and Canty hoped would come into being through subsequent work on the road. Since then, The Messthetics have played upwards of 200 shows across the US, Europe and Asia. Their dialog as a performing unit has necessarily focused and intensified. As a result, Anthropocosmic Nest offers a more varied vision of the band. It's the loudest the trio has ever been and also the quietest. Formed in 2016 the Messthetics are Anthony Pirog, Joe Lally, and Brendan Canty. Pirog is a jazz and experimental guitarist based in Washington, D.C. One half of the duo Janel & Anthony, he also performs regularly with Low Ways Quartet and James Brandon Lewis. Canty and Lally were the rhythm section of the band Fugazi from its inception in 1987 to its period of hiatus in 2002. Since then, Canty has remained active as a documentary filmmaker, producer, and composer, and released a music as a member of the band Deathfix. Lally has released three solo albums and toured extensively with a frequently-rotating cast of musicians."
DC guitarist Anthony Pirog has slowly become of the most exciting and most distinctive electric guitarists to emerge in the past few years. Check out his work with Henry Kaiser (‘Five Times Surprise’), James Brandon Lewis (‘Unruly Manifesto’), his own trio (‘Palo Colorado Dream’) and this, the Messthetics, whose both discs are guitar freaks dream discs! We hope to get the first CD by the Messthetics next week. - BLG/DMG

PEK - Solo: Closed and Open Universes (Evil Clown 9219; USA) Featuring PEK on clarinets, alto, tenor & bass saxes, taragato, flutes, melodica, wind controller, Moog synth, gongs, bells, delay & Abelton mix/samples. Disc 1 is called “Closed Universes” and Disc 2, “Open Universes” and both discs were recorded at Evil Clown Headquarters in June of 2019. Of the more than 100 releases from Leap of Faith & the offshoots, PEK solo efforts are the most rare. As we can see & hear, PEK collects many reed instruments, as well as a wide variety of percussion, synth, samples and devices. On Disc 1, PEK plays one instrument at a time, one per section and on Disc 2, he plays all 16 instruments with samples from Disc 1. What makes Disc 1 interesting is that we get a chance to hear PEK explore each instrument one at a time. Certain instruments are pretty rare: sheng (Chinese free reed), goat horn (ocarina made from a goat’s horn) and Christmas flute. On Disc 1, PEK uses selective digital delay on all of his chosen instruments. This works well for the gong, flutes and assorted reeds, adding a subtle haze their sound. I found the sound of this disc to be a bit lonely, yet somehow enchanting. PEK takes his to explore each instrument, carefully bending his notes one or two at times, the delay adding an eerie sense of mystery. For Disc 2, PEK layers his multiple instruments with samples of each instrument, as well as samples from the Evil Clown catalogue. Again, PEK starts with just a gong, floating in space, resonating, filled with suspense. PEK sounds great here, the production warm and not too weird. Instead of the usual dense Leap of Faith eruptions, PEK lays back, playing with a dream-like sound. Even his simmering melodica playing sounds a bit like Sun Ra, drifting from star to star. This is the most relaxed of all Evil Clown discs. The constant delay makes this more like a space trip. Although 78 minutes does seem rather long, I was still knocked by the organic flow and space-age results. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

SARAH HENNIES - Reservoir 1 (Black Truffle 053; Australia) “Black Truffle present Reservoir 1: Preservation, a gorgeous piece by American composer/percussionist Sarah Hennies. Sarah's work explores a variety of musical, sociopolitical, and psychological issues including queer and trans identity, love, intimacy, psychoacoustics, and percussion. The Reservoirs are a series of three one-hour pieces based on the relationship between the conscious and unconscious human mind. Jung and Freud described the unconscious mind as a reservoir, a repository for memories that we don't readily need access to, yet are kept forever somewhere in our minds. Specifically, Freud believed that one function of the unconscious mind is to store traumatic memories, filed away so that we don't have to confront them every day. The conscious mind has no direct access to the unconscious, yet the unconscious is a constant yet mysterious presence in our lives. Reservoir 1: Preservation is scored for piano and three percussionists, performed by Phillip Bush and Meridian, the long-running experiment in percussion, improvisation, and interpersonal relationships that includes Tim Feeney, Sarah Hennies, and Greg Stuart. In Preservation the piano functions as a constant, pervasive, but almost subliminal murmur amid the percussion playing that cycles through a variety of timbral and gestural areas, including gentle droning, frenetic scraping, and bricks violently dropped into metal buckets. The percussion group never interacts with or responds to the piano, while the piano subtly absorbs aspects of the trio. Preservation was recorded, mixed, and mastered by Jeff Francis at the University of South Carolina and performed by Meridian: Tim Feeney, Sarah Hennies, Greg Stuart (percussion), and Phillip Bush (piano). DUDUKA DA FONSECA & HELIO ALVES with BILLY DREWES / ROMERO LUBAMBO / HANS GLAWISCHNIG / et al - Samba Jazz & Tom Jobim (Sunnyside 1563; USA) Jobims legacy has lived on through his admirers, followers and apprentices. Bossa Nova and the Brazilian jazz tradition continue to flourish, led by the likes of drummer Duduka Da Fonseca and pianist Helio Alves. With the addition of the great vocalist Maucha Adnet, the friends have assembled a program of music highlighting the beauty of the Brazilian Jazz music that they have performed all over the world. Their new recording, Samba Jazz & Tom Jobim, was recorded to spread their passion even further. // Though Da Fonseca and Alves come from different parts of Brazil (Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo, respectively), they both grew up with the sounds of popular Brazilian music and Bossa Nova in their ears. It was upon hearing jazz as teenagers that they decided to pursue the American born genre as their passion. Both would eventually land in New York City to become enmeshed in Gothams jazz world. // Beginning in 2007 at Dizzys Club Coca-Cola in New York, they began to perform a program of music called Samba Jazz and the Music of Jobim with the singer Maucha Adnet, who was a member of Jobims ensemble during the last ten years of his life. The trio has toured the world with the program and has developed an incredible empathy.

AUGUSTUS PABLO & KING TUBBY - The Messenger (Griffiths Records 235; USA) "Both are legends because both innovate -- and activate and motivate. King Tubby (Osbourne Ruddock) arrived on earth in 1941. As a teenager he repaired radios before moving onto repair sound system speakers. Since the mid-50s, sound systems had conquered Jamaica, replacing live bands as the people's favoured choice of access to their music. Tubby (a very slim man) found himself much in demand. In 1968, Tubby opened his own shop, Tubby's Home Town Hi Fi. That led him into the world of sound, led him into recording studios where first he remixed. But then he got bored and in doing so released himself by devising his own amazing aural vision. Tubby invented dub and he did so by experimenting, by creating a unique template where he stripped away certain parts of the record, replaced them with another, highlighted some instruments, dropped others, and on top of this used all kinds of studio effects. And thus King Tubby became King of Dub. In 1971, inevitably, he opened his own studio -- and he took the music deeper. Many musicians loved his set up, including Augustus Pablo. Pablo (Horace Swaby) arrived on earth in 1954. He hit the musical scene playing... the melodica. No one had thought to do so previously. Again, the breaking of new ground was heard in Jamaica. The instrument was perfect for the King Tubby vision, Pablo's playing producing a sound that was melodic, harsh, edgy, and soulful. Over Tubby's shuffling rhythms and maelstrom of sound, Pablo improvises with huge imagination and skill. His major hit East Of the River Nile suggested and put forward a sound derived from the Far East and he was up and running. In 1975, he began a fruitful collaboration with King Tubby. Their first album together Ital Dub is a classic. The later King Tubby Meets The Rockers Uptown is more than that, it is legendary. And now The Messenger is upon us, an album cut at some point in the 70s and which remained in the vaults. Should it have stayed there? No way. This is music that upholds the very high stars of their past, music which fires itself on imagination and strength, a collusion and collaboration of immense proportions, music that provides and creates moods with such purpose and drive. Pablo's melodica is centre stage but is counterpointed by contagious rhythms and touches of inspiration as horns and bass lines mesh in and out of view, held down by an ever-steady barrage of sturdy drums and bass and a never ceasing source of imaginative and delightful sounds. The sound constantly changes and because it does the album contains a staggering array of moods, from upbeat into deep waters. The Messenger is forward music, still sounding as fresh as it did on the day of its conception. And it will do so for time eternal." - Paolo Hewitt London 2019.

LEE 'SCRATCH' PERRY - Rootz Reggae Dub (Megawave 512; USA) "Dub reggae legend Lee 'Scratch' Perry returns to the studio with new roots reggae dub, produced by Spacewave and recorded in Jamaica and the USA, with backing vocals by Dames Brown and Groovematist and backing musicians Speak Easy and percussionist Larry McDonald. This Grammy-winning artist, songwriter, and producer continues his commentary on spirituality, good and evil, and the human condition."

LP Section:

KID MILLIONS & SARAH BERNSTEIN - Broken Fall (577 Records 5828; USA) Featuring Kid Millions on drums and Sarah Bernstein on violin, electronics & voice. This is the second release from this unlikely pair Downtown players, their first was a cassette-only release. Kid Millions is usually an intense hard-hitting drummer, especially when he works with Borbetomagus’ saxist Jim Sauter and his band Oneida. Ms. Bernstein is also unpredictable/diverse, working with Iron Dog (trio w/ Stuart Popejoy & Andrew Drury), duo with Satoshi Takeishi and recent collaborations with Guillermo Gregorio (here at DMG). This album kicks off with “Humint”, with Ms. Bernstein’s howling voice in the distance, a wash of keyboards , electronics or violin with devices and Kid’s whirlwind drumming. The duo do a fine job of soaring into space-rock, grounded by Mr. Million’s strong mallet-work and Ms. Bernstein’s haunting, buzzing, cerebral violin playing. The sound of the violin is slightly warped, either through some devices or just the note-bending ghost-like sounds, which are brutal and occasionally over-the-top. Sometimes there are some quieter, more calm moments as well, where things are stripped down to bare essentials yet still evoke the spirit of distant ghosts floating at the edge of our vision or hearing. I hope to see this dynamic duo live, otherwise we can just listen to this gem. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

RACHEL MUSSON / PAT THOMAS / MARK SANDERS - Shifa Live at Cafe Oto (577 Records 5823; USA) Featuring Rachel Musson on tenor & soprano saxes, Pat Thomas on piano and Mark Sanders on drums. UK saxist, Rachel Musson, has been turning up on several discs over the past few years with Alex Ward, Steve Beresford and Federico Ughi. This is her second album for the 577 Records label and she has organized an impressive trio with two veterans: Pat Thomas on piano and Mark Sanders on drums. Both of these men you should recognize from the dozens of discs they’ve done many of UK’s finest: Mr. Thomas (Derek Bailey, Eugene Chadbourne & Tony Oxley) and Mr. Sanders (Evan Parker, Paul Dunmall & Jah Wobble).
This is a strong, focused, free trio which starts out quietly, soon building to restrained storm. I really dig Ms. Musson’s tone and playing, it is warm yet frenzied at times, The balance and playing here is well done, all members of the trio essential to the solid sound. Things eventually slow down for the mid section, with all three members of the trio stretching things out. So nice to hear Mr. Thomas playing such expressive, free piano here, matching Ms. Musson’s playing wherever it goes. For the last section, Ms. Musson switches to soprano sax and the trio takes off for a tight, intense exchange. This album winds down to a fine, superbly nuanced conclusion. A truly great trio! - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

AKI ONDA & PAUL CLIPSON - Make Visible The Ghosts (Audiomer 018; Belgium) This album is the follow-up of Aki Onda's Cinemage project Lost City - with Loren Connors and Alan Licht -- released on audioMER. in 2015 (AUDIOMER 013LP). On Make Visible The Ghosts, New York-based musician Aki Onda composed the soundtrack for the images of the San Francisco experimental filmmaker Paul Clipson, who suddenly passed away on February 3, 2018. In 2009, Clipson and Onda met at the Amsterdam Schiphol Airport for the first time and shared a ride to the International Film Festival Rotterdam, where they presented audio-visual works in the same bill. Since then, the two artists -- known for their highly personal approach with Super 8, 16mm, cassette Walkman, and radio -- maintained a close friendship over the next nine years. Their works deal with memory, time, space, and those reflections, and they had a lot to share. Onda and Clipson completed their collaboration work Make Visible The Ghosts -- a combination of vinyl LP of Onda's music and large-size collage artwork by Clipson -- a few months before Clipson's departure from life. The work is composed of the materials they used for their performance in New York in 2012 and developed over the three years from 2015 to 2017. Onda notes: "The loss of Paul has left a huge hole in our mind including his friends and collaborators. Paul is no longer here, and this is a chance to remember him and his images that extended and expanded our perception of how the world can be seen and heard."

DOME - Dome 3 (Editions Mego 003; Austria) With the demise of the group Wire in 1980, founder members Bruce Gilbert and Graham Lewis joined forces to create Dome. With the assistance of engineer Eric Radcliffe and his Blackwing Studio Dome took the ethic of "using the studio as a compositional tool" and recorded and released three Dome albums on their own label in the space of 12 months: Dome (July, 1980), Dome 2 (October, 1980), and Dome 3 (October 1981). A final fourth album, Will You Speak This Word: Dome IV was released on the Norwegian Uniton label in May 1983. These albums represent some of the most beautifully stark and above all timeless exercises in studio experimentation from early 1980s alternative music scene. Previously issued in the out-of-print Dome 1-4 5 box set in 2011. Floating-point re-master by Russell Haswell, August 2011. Cut at Dubplates & Mastering by Rashad Becker, August 2011. New artwork by Dave Coppenhall. Includes download card.

GEOFFREY HENDRICKS WITH PHILIP CORNER - Stones: Dreams (Recital R 068; USA) Recital label head Sean McCann on Stones : Dreams: "The first audio document ever published by Fluxus artist Geoffrey Hendricks (1931-2018). There is a romanticism found in Geoffrey, that, in my mind, sets his work aside from his Fluxfriends. Known for his timeless sky paintings, applied to canvas, cars, clothes, and so on, the conceptual married the majestic. He was a master painter, whose work could have filled cathedral ceilings. Instead, he chartered his bow alongside George Maciunas, John Cage, Dick Higgins, etc. in the 1950s. Hendricks became a prominent member of Fluxus, shown in exhibitions around the world for over 60 years. In the 1970s, composer Charlie Morrow approached Hendricks about recording an album for the New Wilderness Audiographics cassette series. This became a 40-year dance of orbiting schedules and slipping dates. The sky aligned in 2014, and a recording session at Ear Up Studios in New York manifested. Geoffrey's connection to nature not only focused upwards at the sky, but always downwards to stones. 'Rock Music' consists of a box of rocks being cast across a room. Pounded on wood, soft and hard, the sonar-like snapping echo mapping the dimensions of the room. Small bells hover over the rubbing of stones humming to each other. You can tell that this was a therapeutic ritual he practiced for years, not merely an improvised recording concept. With the LP is a booklet that includes diaries of his stone collecting on Cape Breton island in 1973, beautifully infused with dream recollection. The cassette of 'Music for Sky Slate Wall' was discovered by chance earlier this year in the vast archive Hendricks left behind. It holds Geoff's close friend Philip Corner performing at an Emily Harvey Foundation exhibition in 1999. Corner responds to the Hendricks installation, interpreting the wall adorned with watercolors of day and night skies, grey slate, and a ladder hanging more paintings and golden ornaments. Philip Corner performs with prongs, Korean shaman cymbals, his voice, and a shoe. Their charming friendship can be heard in the interplay. This project was made possible by Geoff's widow, Sur Rodney (Sur), his children, Tyche and Bracken Hendricks, Philip Corner, and Charlie Morrow." Includes 16-page pamphlet with essays by Tyche Hendricks and Charlie Morrow, diaries and artworks by Geoffrey Hendricks. Edition of 220.

VALENTINA MAGALETTI & JULIAN SARTORIUS - Sulla Pelle (Marionett 011; Canada) "Valentina Magaletti and Julian Sartorius maintain a dialogue of irregular tempos and off-kilter percussion on their first collaborative record titled Sulla Pelle. Valentina is a force in the world of electronic and experimental music - working with Tom Relleen under Tomaga, jazz/pop band Vanishing Twin, the collective UUUU with a couple of releases on Editions Mego, as well as various collaborations with the likes of Nicholas Jaar and Raime/Moin to name a couple. Julian Sartorius is a denizen in and of the beat -- he's collaborated with artists such as Matthew Herbert, Shahzad Ismaily, Sylvie Courvoisier, as well as touring worldwide and widely through Europe with his solo show on the bill with the likes of Deerhoof, Faust, and Jaki Liebezeit. It's apparent that time is not perceived in an ordinary manner by Julian -- he's released a Beat Diary consisting of 365 beats and, on a daily basis, adds an element to his collage and modifies an 8-second audio loop under the project called Morph. More recently, he played percussion on the track 'Firesmoke' on Kate Tempest's new record The Book of Traps and Lessons. Sulla Pelle chisels away at your headspace at varying velocities with a harmonious flow -- at times gently carving out channels that dramatically flood with syncopated kick drums and shifting propulsive beats. It's as much about monotonous playing as it is about those moments where it seems as though every vertebra branches into tentacles and antennas ricocheting hits in foreign symbiosis. Rasping prepared drums that traverse the body into all sorts of ceremonial throttles, hedonistic arm flails, primal cheer at every incipient dynamic accent. This raw and sparse drumming and percussion record sees Valentina and Julian cueing each other in on interlocked ratchets and clanks with different mallets and metalwork from Malcom Catto's studio on top of modular tinkering and occasional distant subdued ramblings."
