You know Janis Joplin?
She will tell you all about that wine!
Last night, I attended a free concert in Woodbridge, NJ, not far from where I live in Rahway. The group that played were the Ed Palermo Big Band with special guests: ROB PAPAROZZI on vocals & bluesharp and George Naha on lead guitar. It was a tribute to the Butterfield Blues Band and the Electric Flag, two seminal sixties blues/rock/jazz bands, both of whom included Mike Bloomfield on lead guitar. Both Rob Paparozzi and George Naha grew up in Linden, New Jersey, where yours truly is also from. I recall Rob playing harmonica on the street, around the corner from my house in the mid-sixties when we both kids. Rob & his brother Mario founded the Psychotic Blues Band, who were legends around Union County. I used to watch them rehearse in they basement and later at Farber Brothers Lumber Company in Linden. I caught them many times live growing up as they morphed into other bands like Blues Train, etc. Since then, Rob Paparozzi has done jingles, been in Broadway musicals, toured with a later version of Blood, Sweat & Tears and is still a member of the touring Blues Brothers. Check out his Facebook page. This gig was immensely fun and I was so glad to see & hear my old Linden homeys whipping up a storm of great dancing music! I was the only old guy there dancing without a walker! Rob P & the Ed Palermo Big Band do have a CD out called ‘Electric Butter’, which we hope to get into the store sometime soon. They will be performing at the Reading Blues Fest in Penn next month with Robben Ford as their guest. So get there, if you can. You will have a blast!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO JOHN ZORN!
On Monday, earlier this week, my main man, JOHN ZORN, turned 66! In December of this year, it will be forty years since I first heard Mr. Zorn play a duo set with Fred Frith at Studio Henry (corner of Morton & Bleecker in the West Village). The first few times I heard Mr. Zorn play, he didn’t even assemble his sax, he just played mouth pieces, sax parts, game or bird calls & a cup of water. I wasn’t even sure if he could really play until I checked out his bebop quartet later that year in 1980. I am still astonished by how much Mr. Zorn has accomplished and explored in the forty years since our first meeting: solo sax gigs, hundreds of improv gigs, inventing & presenting some 25 game pieces, tributes to Ennio Morricone, Ornette Coleman, Sonny Clark, founding or being a member of diverse bands like Golden Palominos, Shockabilly, Locus Solus, News for Lulu, Naked City, (acoustic) Masada and Electric Masada. He also founded the Avant label (with 60 CD’s) and then the Tzadik label, which passed the 800 mark earlier this year!!! He also founded The Stone performance place in 2005 which moved to its new location last year in March 0f 2018. Besides The Stone, Mr. Zorn has also been curating monthly concerts at National Sawdust & Russ & Daughters and weekend shows at HappyLucky No. 1. When I asked Zorn how he does so much, he said that he doesn’t sleep but stays focused on getting things done. Let’s give a toast to a true Renaissance man, who has inspired so many of us demanding listeners!
In order to celebrate JOHN ZORNS’S vast catalogue of recorded music, DMG will have a month-long CD sale, which will be listed at the end of this newsletter. Around 160 CD’s we be on sale for Mr. Zorn’s birthday month. As far as live shows go, the New Masada Quartet will be playing at the Village Vanguard for 6 mights, October 29th - November 3rd, 2019. The New Masada Quartet are: John Zorn, Julian Lage, Jorge Roeder and Kenny Wollesen. They have no recordings as of yet

FINALLY After Nearly a Month of Delays, This Great Box Set will be Here Shortly:
MOMENTUM 4 with KEN VANDERMARK / KRIS DAVIS / IKUE MORI / WILLIAM PARKER / HAMID DRAKE / PAUL LYTTON - Consequent Duos 2015>2019 (Audiographica; USA) A collection of duo recordings featuring Ken Vandermark in collaboration with internationally renowned, and critically acclaimed, musicians: Kris Davis, Hamid Drake, Paul Lytton, Ikue Mori, and William Parker. The material is documented on 5 CDs and was recorded during performances at Vandermark’s second Stone residency in New York City during January of 2018 and at Experimental Sound Studio in Chicago.
The improvised music included is remarkably expansive, in terms of instrumentation, improvisational methodologies, and aesthetics. Starting with a duo studio session held at ESS in June of 2015 with British improvisational innovator and percussionist, Paul Lytton, the resulting material has a focus on speed, rhythm, texture and tension. Then the documentation shifts to a series of concert recordings made at the original Stone over the course of three nights. They move from long-form electronic and reed explorations with Ikue Mori; to acoustic dialogs between pianist Kris Davis and Vandermark that reference 20th and 21st century new music innovations; to a contemporary look at free jazz materials, involving one of the master musicians connected to that history, bassist William Parker. The entire set of music concludes with a another studio session at ESS, this time in January of 2019, and connected to one of the longest associations in Vandermark’s creative career, that with drummer/percussionist Hamid Drake. Remarkably, after playing together for 25 years, this is their first duo recording.
5 CD Set $48 [LTD Edition of 500]
THREE GREAT NEW DISCS from The ILUSO LABEL:
ALVARO DOMENE & HENRY KAISER - El Tren Fantasma / The Ghost Train (Iluso 22; Earth) Featuring Henry Kaiser and Alvaro Domene on acoustic and electric guitars. These guitar duets were inspired by and created for a classic railroad/western silent film which was produced in Mexico in 1927. The name of the film is “El Tren Fantasma†or “The Ghost Train†and has rarely been shown in the US. There are three tracks on this disc, two of which are electric guitar duets inspired by the film, while the second track is a 45 minute piece for two acoustic guitars which is a condensed version of the entire 71 minute soundtrack. If you want to hear and view the entire film and soundtrack by these tow guitars, it can be checked out on YouTube or Vimeo.
You should recognize the name of Spanish guitarist Alvaro Domene since he co-runs this, the Iluso label which has now features a half dozen discs by Mr. Domene in solo, duos, trio and quartet contexts. West coast guitar great Henry Kaiser seems to be on a mission to record duos with as many creative guitarists from around the world (be they known or not so well-known) as he possibly can: Eugene Chadbourne, Sandy Ewen, Fred Frith, Killick Hinds, Jim O;Rourke, Max Kutner, Alan Licht, Anthony Pirog and many more!
The first long track, “Los Fantasmas†is for two electric guitars. When it starts, it sounds as if someone is sampling a piano along with soft layers of ghost-like guitar swirls. As the piece evolves the guitars are selectively manipulated with different devices, which changes landscape or soundscape as it moves. As the guitars expand, bending notes here & there, the sound is often cinematic, with layers or waves moving around one another. Mr. Kaiser is a master of the whammy bar whether he is physically or digitally bending those notes. The second piece, “Caminos de Orizabaâ€Â, is the longest (45 minutes) and it is a condensed version of the soundtrack for two acoustic guitars. The guitarists take their time and carefully build in layers of density and tempo. Since I haven’t seen the film yet, I can’t comment on how well this music works with it, but the music does evoke a series of images or feelings. There are few quieter sections which give us some breathing space and calm things down to a more somber level. W=Eventually building into more intense sections. There is a later section which sounds like a gun fight or similar violent segment, eventually building back down to some more reflective moments. The final electric guitar duo is over-the-top and quite intense! If you like to have your mind blown, then you really should check out this disc. Here’s the link for the film with the new soundtrack from Mr. Kaiser and Mr. Domene: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u-G_CL42VNY

FRODE GJERSTAD / FRED LONBERG-HOLM / MATTHEW SHIPP - Season of Sadness in 8 Parts (Iluso 21; Earth) Featuring Frode Gjerstad on alto sax & clarinet, Fred Lonberg-Holm on cello and Matt Shipp on piano. Norwegian reeds player, Frode Gjerstad, is one of the elders of free/jazz, whose career stretches back around 40 years. Starting with the legendary band Detail (with John Stevens, UK drummer & Johnny Dyani - South African expat bassist), Mr. Gjerstad has working with dozens free/music greats through his long career. Although Mr. Gjerstad has several working trios (w/ PN-Love & Jan Rune Strom & Tipple), he continually seeks out many of the best free musicians from around the world to perform live and record with. Whereas Mr. Gjerstad has recorded with Mr. Lonberg-Holm on some half dozen previous discs, this is his first recording with Downtown piano giant, Matt Shipp. After several years in NYC, cellist Fred Lonberg-Holm, moved to Chicago for some two decades. Last year he moved to upstate New York and has been again keeping busy playing with many of Downtown’s best players. Pianist Matt Shipp is another busy Downtown musician who leads several bands, trio & duos, yet he also has been stretching out to work with a variety other musicians like Gordon Grdina & Mark Helias, Rich Halley and Nicole Mitchell.
The reason for the title of this disc, “Season of Sadnessâ€Â, is that we are indeed living through some difficult times. This is a studio effort and the sound is superb, warm, spacious and perfectly balanced. The first track is solemn, rather prayer-like, thoughtful and introspective sounding. Mr. Gjerstad starts off on clarinet, making each note count, building as the piano and cello slowly swirl around him, the vibe serious and somewhat dark, yet somehow hopeful as if there is some sunlight at the end of a dark tunnel. The music often sounds like a fascinating conversation, with several layers of lines all swirling around one another in tight, organic orbits. At one point it sounds as if there is a race going with the cello & sax spiraling together, increasing in tempo as Mr Shipp adds a haunting undertow underneath. What I dig most about this is this: the interaction is often tight, focused and woven together like a cosmic tapestry. If you listen closely, you start to hear the way certain notes are like shadows, while other notes are reactive and in flux. When the clarinet or sax and cello play those spiked; jagged lines together, Mr. Shipp does a great job of creating turbulent harmonies underneath. This is a conversation at its best with several layers of cross-connections erupting, questioning and answering and coming together as one dynamic force. Bravo for all three members of this dynamic trio! - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

BRIGGAN KRAUSS - Art of the Saxophone: The Lethe Lounge Sessions (Iluso 23; Earth) Featuring Briggan Krauss on solo alto sax. When it comes to Downtown Alto Sax Avant/Jazz Pioneers, the lineage starts around 40 years ago with the early Downtowners like John Zorn, Ned Rothenberg & Tim Berne, winding its way through Thomas Chapin, M-Base-ists like Steve Coleman and Greg Osby and beyond. The early pioneers began with Ornette Coleman, Eric Dolphy, Jackie McLean who were followed by Roscoe Mitchell, Joseph Jarman, Anthony Braxton, Henry Threadgill, Oliver Lake… The first influential solo sax record was made by Anthony Braxton in 1968, ‘For Alto’. In the seventies Roscoe Mitchell & Evan Parker also recorded highly regarded solo sax efforts and did live performances. Starting around 1979/1980, the first solos sax sets I caught were by John Zorn and Ned Rotherberg, within a few years I heard Roscoe Mitchell, Evan Parker & Mr. Braxton, as well. Solo sax offerings & gigs are more common nowadays, DMG has had solo sets Chris Pitsiokos, Tamio Shiraishi and Sam Weinberg, over the past few years. Aside from just solo sax efforts, there are a handful of saxists who have explored different ways of playing the sax in unconventional ways. Some folks who come to mind are Jack Wright, Jim Hobbs and Briggan Krauss.
Briggan Krauss is a longtime Downtowner who has played with seminal bands: (Wayne Horvitz’) Pigpen, Babkas and (Steve Bernstein’s) Sex Mob. And like John Zorn, Ned Rothenberg or Jim Hobbs, Mr. Krauss has worked long & hard to develop his own sound. This is only Mr. Krauss’ second solo sax recording, the first was in the nineties on the KnitWorks label. On each of the 22 pieces on this disc (most under 3 minutes), Mr. Krauss explores a different approach to his playing the sax. From the very first sound, we can tell that Mr. Krauss has his own unique sound, bending & twisting his notes, adding accents to certain notes as he shifts between different methods. Each piece is labeled “Open†or “Study†or “Towelâ€Â, the towel pieces refer to the fact that Krauss is using a towel to mute his sounds. At times, Mr. Krauss slows down and concentrates on one note or sound, carefully twisting the note into a different sound. One thing I notice is that the way this is recorded, the sound of the room and placement of where the sax is, determining certain tonal qualities. You can actually hear Mr. Krauss, carefully manipulating certain notes so that the effect is changed when we hear it. Solo sax freaks like Kevin Reilly and myself can hear how much care and control went into each piece, making this disc consistently fascinating and more diverse that one would imagine. Very glad that this disc exists since it documents Briggan Krauss’ long journey of exploration on his chosen (s) axe. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

JIM McAULEY and SCOT RAY - Second Earth (Long Song Records 152; Italy) Featuring Jim McAuley on classical 6 & 12 stringed & prepared guitars & dobro and Scot Ray on lap steel guitar & effects. I was listening to an extraordinary solo acoustic guitar CD from Richard Leo Johnson and realizing that there music be dozens (hundreds?) of great acoustic guitarists out there who exist with or without the recognition that they deserve. Both guitarists on this disc, Jim McAuley and Scot Ray, hail from the L.A. area, record infrequently yet still find a way getting their music out there. We got this promo in the mail a couple of weeks ago from the great Italian label, Long Song, and I’ve played it several times since, it is astonishing whether you’ve heard of these men or not. Jim McAuley has a couple of well-regarded solo efforts as well as a couple of trio discs with the late Rod Poole (murdered in a parking lot) and Nels Cline, plus a double CD of rare duets with Leroy Jenkins, Ken Filiano, Alex & Nels Cline. Scot Ray was originally a fine trombone player who has worked with Steuart Liebig, Nels Cline and Vinny Golia. For the past decae or so, Mr. Ray has been playing slide guitar, working in a duo called Gutpuppet with Bill Barrett, as well as having a fine, rare effort slide effort called ‘Rumi’.
What’s interesting abut this date is that these two musicians had never played together before and this disc was recorded fresh with not overdubs in the order of when it was recorded. These two sound really great together. The opening track is the title and that lap steel has a haunting ghost-town like pedal steel vibe with layers of intricate acoustic guitar fragments spinning on top. What works so well here is that while Mr. McAuley plays swirls of notes and subtle harmonics, Mr. Ray is able to add sublime harmonies with his steel guitar, carefully bending notes as a magician or magic partner. Much of this music is refreshingly melodic yet still haunting with careful craft and spaciousness or suspense floating around it. Mr. McAuley actually sound like he is playing a harp at times, spinning a lovely web that only angels and serious listeners would appreciate. Modern guitar fans/freaks, this one is for you! - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

METAL CHAOS ENSEMBLE With PEK / MIKE GRUEN / YURI ZBITNOV - Basilisk (Evil Clown 9217; USA) Featuring PEK on alto, tenor & bass saxes, clarinets, taragato & gong, Mike Gruen on bass and Yuri Zbitnov on drums & Englephone. This was recorded live at The Queen in Wilmington, Delaware in May of 2019. This is the smallest version of the Metal Chaos Ensemble, just a trio with the two founding Leap of Faith members: PEK and Yuri Zbitnov. This disc is dedicated to someone named Vermin Supreme, who looks like a viking and is wearing a rubber boot on his head?!? The majority of the 100 CD’s from Leap of Faith and their half dozen offshoots bands were recorded in the Boston area, expect for a couple of discs recorded on a trio to NYC at DMG and The Spectrum. This makes this disc a rarity since it was recorded in Delaware. Another rare occurrence is PEK only playing six reeds & a gong and Mr. Zbitnov just playing drums and something called an Englephone. Like most discs by LoF or Metal Chaos, this begins quietly, slowly and builds from there. The ever mighty drummer, Yuri Zbitnov, sounds great and is at the center of trio whipping up a rhythmic storm. PEK concentrates on one reed at a time, with inspired solos on bass sax, regular & contralto clarinets, and the other two saxes. Since PEK has fewer reeds to choose from, his solos are longer, giving us time to appreciate each one. Some of the Metal Chaos Ensemble sessions can be over the top and demanding to hear at length. This is one is very organic and flows superbly throughout. 4 & 1/2 stars! - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

CONRAD SCHNITZLER - Conditions of the Gas Giant (Bureau B 320; Germany) Bureau B present a reissue of Conrad Schnitzler's Conditions of the Gas Giant, originally released on cassette in 1988. The Berlin artist first released these recordings on a small American cassette label. Admirers of the seminal artist Conrad Schnitzler can be found all over the planet, including the USA, of course. Matt Howarth, illustrator and independent comic artist, is one of them. He has been following Schnitzler's music since the early 1970s whilst drawing offbeat science fiction stories. One day Howarth came up with the idea of making Schnitzler a member of a notorious band -- The Bulldaggers -- who featured in one of his comic series. Not wanting to go ahead without permission, he got in touch with Schnitzler who readily embraced the idea. In fact, he posted a pile of photos by return so that the graphic artist could draw him properly. The Bulldaggers popped up repeatedly in the comics and Schnitzler was (repeatedly) delighted. A friendship soon developed between him and Howarth. In 1986, Howarth designed his first cover for a Schnitzler album (Concert) and the following year Schnitzler entrusted him with tapes which Howarth was able to bring to the notice of the small American label Bird O' Pray. Considering the label's predominantly punk and early garage leanings, Howarth and Schnitzler were as surprised as each other to see the album successfully released on cassette. Howarth and Schnitzler came up with the album title together. Conditions of the Gas Giant reflected the atmosphere they associated with the music, clouds of manifold colors, whirling nervously above a gaseous planet. A methane and helium tryst in sonic form -- fireworks, pyrotechnics for the eyes, like the surface of Jupiter, just as Schnitzler's tracks are pyrotechnics for the ears. This is the image conveyed by Matt Howarth in the liner notes for the reissue -- naturally designed by himself -- based on the aborted 1990s CD release. He also called on his friend D.H. Kister for further assistance, the man who first introduced him to Schnitzler's music almost fifty years ago. First CD and vinyl release.

DOWN HOME BLUES with JOHN LEE HOOKER / EDDIE KIRKLAND / LITTLE SONNY / BOBO JENKINS / et al - Detroit (Weinerworld 5095; UK) "Down Home Blues: Detroit is the definitive collection of blues music from Detroit-based musicians from the late 1940s to the early 1960s. It features over 20 artists who were influential in developing the Detroit blues scene, including John Lee Hooker, Bo Bo Jenkins, Sam Kelly, Eddie Kirkland, Little Sonny, Detroit Count, Eddie Burns, Baby Boy Warren, Big Ed And His Combo and many more. This three CD set, packaged in a deluxe digipak with an outer slip case, features 82 rare tracks, all digitally remastered, with some unissued recordings and others which have not been available for decades. Includes a 48 page book featuring an essay on the origins of Detroit music by renowned blues researcher and historian Mike Rowe, complete with rare photos, tracklisting and full sessionography. Detroit, Michigan. A northern city -- smaller but akin to Chicago -- where country southern blacks migrated to find work and found themselves within new urban surroundings. Amongst their numbers were blues musicians who took with them their traditional sounds. It began to develop with a more aggressive feel which grew with them in their new urban life surroundings. There are 21 different artists here. There is extreme. There are selections of players who encompassed into small combo group recordings to the solo player whose sound without doubt was perfect without any extra accompaniment. There are artists here who made many more commercial recordings than others, who maybe got just one record out. By luck there are some unissued recordings - from unearthed rare acetate discs. The definitive three album collection of Down Home Blues from Detroit!"

VIRGINIA GENTA - Amplified Sopranino Sax (Relative Pitch; Earth) Virginia Genta is the Real Thing! Ms. Genta was once a member of two legendary/under-recognized Italian Free/Jazz bands: Jooklo Duo and Neokarma Trio (on Q-Bico, good luck finding them!?!), as well as a mighty fine duo with Andrew Barker on drums (LP only) and a quartet LP on Feeding Tube. I read about this rarity in The Wire thanks to Byron Coley. Relative Pitch founder/survivor, Kevin Reilly rescued this disc from possible obscurity and released it on his own, beyond the far out sounds of RP Records. Hence it is super-limited. When I first put this on, I wasn’t sure if it was at the correct speed…!?! What is that… mutant bent note sounds of questionable origin. Hmmmmm?!?

EVAN PARKER - Evan Parker With Birds (Treader 001; UK) "One of Treader's most requested recordings sees the great UK free saxophonist Evan Parker on soprano and tenor saxophones, duetting with European birdsong. THE CLANDESTINE QUARTET with ALAN & RICHARD BISHOP / CHRIS CORANO / MICHAEL FLOWER - One for the Fossa, Two for the Wolverine (Thirtythree Thirtythree 005; UK) ThirtyThree ThirtyThree present the debut LP from the Clandestine Quartet, bringing together Alan and Richard Bishop with Michael Flower and Chris Corsano. Invited to perform in London as part of the St John Sessions series, Alan Bishop rounded up this quartet of underground stalwarts with a deep history of collaborative ventures -- the Bishop brothers making up two-thirds of the legendary Sun City Girls, Richard Bishop and Corsano comprising two parts of psychedelic juggernaut Rangda, and the Flower-Corsano Duo having wowed audiences for over a decade with their face-melting brand of eastern-tinged free shred. The quartet spent four days in the studio developing material for the London show and recording the seven pieces heard here (five across the LP, accompanied by two digital bonus tracks). They settled, for the most part, on something approaching a classic rock quartet line-up: Richard Bishop on electric guitar, Michael Flower on his signature amplified "Japanese banjo" (an Indian keyed zither), Alan Bishop on bass, and Chris Corsano manning the drums. Rather than a straight-up improvised blowing session, the LP strikes a balance between free-flowing spontaneous interaction and structured surprise, alternating between zoned-out group meditations and stop-on-a-dime unison dynamics. On the epic side-long opener "Don't Hang From My Ceiling", a lyrical weave of guitar, bass, and Japanese banjo lines approaches the unhurried melodic invention of Indian classical music until Corsano's tumbling, free-form drums incite the quartet into an ecstatic crescendo, over which Richard Bishop's guitar unfurls a euphoric solo that calls to mind the mystical grandeur of prime Popol Vuh. The B side finds the quartet branching out both in terms of instrumentation and compositional strategies, crafting a suite of pieces that, like classic Sun City Girls, move unexpectedly from tightly locked bass and drum grooves to explosions of free jazz alto saxophone (courtesy of Alan Bishop) and from shimmering guitar jams to massed choirs of horns. "(So Long) Harry Dean", one of the record's highlights, finds Richard Bishop on piano, leading the quartet through a languorous series of chords punctuated by Corsano's gracefully ungainly percussive accents, before a sudden blast of reed horn announces a passage of rapid-fire dissonance that seamlessly transitions back into the pianistic meandering of the track's first-half. Effortlessly balanced between improvisation and composition, melody and noise, rhythm and space, the Clandestine Quartet is a fitting next step for this group of psychedelic troubadours.

FRANCOIS J. BONNET & STEPHEN O'MALLEY - Cylene (Editions Mego 262; Austria) “First time outing from two ardent explorers of peripheral sound tactics. Cylene is the first collaboration by François J. Bonnet (Kassel Jaeger) and Stephen O'Malley (Sunn O)))). Laid bare, you have a subtle and nuanced study of their individual practices forming a titanic whole. O'Malley's guitar inscribes a void that patiently opens up a spacious universe for Bonnet to discreetly alter with perception re-orientating studio maneuvers. Cylene is infinitely rewarding for those that succumb to its delicate detours. A vast glacial plain unfurls slowly upon the listener invoking a mood similar to the stillness found following despair. As Joseph Ghosn succinctly outlines in his liner notes, "Stephen and François deal in those moments and instants that happen after the violence, and the ugliness and the mess. Their music is about chaos being summoned and ordered. It is about the noise that nurtures your ears after a long heartbreaking pain. I have heard the sounds of wars being fought and the noises of hearts being broken, and I have never found a shelter as soothing as this music which makes me think of sunken ships and beauty found in the depths of oceans long forgotten." Art direction: Stephen O'Malley. Portrait photographer: Eléonore Huisse. Recorded at GRM Studios, Paris May 2018. Edited and mixed by François Bonnet at GRM studios, Paris August 2018. Mastering by Rashad Becker at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin January 2019.

MARC BRIERLEY - Welcome To The Citadel (Magic Box 1003; UK) Magic Box present a reissue of Marc Brierley's Welcome To The Citadel, originally released in 1968. This is one of the finest underground singer-songwriter albums of its era, blending expert acoustic guitar with jazzy backings from some of Britain's leading contemporary jazz musicians, including Tony Reeves, Henry Lowther, and Mike Travis, and truly psychedelic lyrics. Originally issued in early 1969, it's almost impossible to find in its original incarnation. It's finally reissued here on vinyl, together with an insert that includes background liners and CD of full album with 12 bonus tracks. 140 gram vinyl.

BILL EVANS // BRUCE SPIEGEL - Time Remembered: The Life And Music Of Bill Evans Wienerworld 2604; UK) "This multi award-winning documentary tells the story of jazz pianist Bill Evans' turbulent life and his contribution to jazz music. Features over 40 interviews, including several renowned musicians: Tony Bennett, Billy Taylor, singer Jon Hendricks and jazz drummer Joe LaBarbera. The film also compiles a wide range of historical information about the jazz pianist including his first TV recording which appeared on CBS Look Up and Live in April 1958, playing 'Come Rain or Come Shine'. With the passage of time, Bill Evans has become an entire school unto himself for pianists and a singular mood unto himself for listeners. There is no more influential jazz-oriented pianist and Evans has left his mark on such noted players as Herbie Hancock, Keith Jarrett, Chick Corea, and Brad Mehldau. Borrowing heavily from the impressionism of Debussy and Ravel, Evans brought a new, introverted, relaxed, lyrical, European classical sensibility into jazz -- and that seems to have attracted a lot of young conservatory-trained pianists who follow his chord voicings to the letter in clubs and on stages everywhere. 'This film took me eight years to make. Eight years of tracking down anybody who knew Bill and who played with him, to try and find out as much as I could about the illusive and not easy to understand Bill Evans. I feel very honored to have had the chance to interview and get to know good guys that spent a lot of time with Bill: Billy Taylor, Gene Lees, Tony Bennett, Jack DeJohnette, Jon Hendricks, Jim Hall, Bobby Brookmeyer, Chuck Israels, Paul Motian, Gary Peacock, Joe LaBarbera. It was a once in a lifetime experience talking to these gifted talented guys about their time in jazz music, about their 'Time Remembered' with Bill Evans.' - Bruce Spiegel, producer"
