“The Dong with the Luminous Nose” by Edward Lear

When awful darkness and silence reign
Over the great Gromboolian plain,
  Through the long, long wintry nights;--
When the angry breakers roar
As they beat on the rocky shore;--
  When Storm-clouds brood on the towering heights
Of the Hills of the Chankly Bore:--
Then, through the vast and gloomy dark,
There moves what seems a fiery spark,
  A lonely spark with silvery rays
  Piercing the coal-black night,--
  A Meteor strange and bright:--
Hither and thither the vision strays,
  A single lurid light.
Slowly it wanders,--pauses,--creeps,--
Anon it sparkles,--flashes and leaps;
And ever as onward it gleaming goes
A light on the Bong-tree stems it throws.
And those who watch at that midnight hour
From Hall or Terrace, or lofty Tower,
Cry, as the wild light passes along,--
    'The Dong!--the Dong!
  'The wandering Dong through the forest goes!
    'The Dong! the Dong!
  'The Dong with a luminous Nose!'
    Long years ago
  The Dong was happy and gay,
Till he fell in love with a Jumbly Girl
  Who came to those shores one day,
For the Jumblies came in a sieve, they did,--
Landing at eve near the Zemmery Fidd
    Where the Oblong Oysters grow,
  And the rocks are smooth and gray.
And all the woods and the valleys rang
With the Chorus they daily and nightly sang,--
    'Far and few, far and few,
    Are the lands where the Jumblies live;
    Their heads are green, and their hands are blue
    And they went to sea in a sieve.'
Happily, happily passed those days!
    While the cheerful Jumblies staid;
  They danced in circlets all night long,
  To the plaintive pipe of the lively Dong,
    In moonlight, shine, or shade.
For day and night he was always there
By the side of the Jumbly Girl so fair,
With her sky-blue hands, and her sea-green hair.
Till the morning came of that hateful day
When the Jumblies sailed in their sieve away,
And the Dong was left on the cruel shore
Gazing--gazing for evermore,--
Ever keeping his weary eyes on
That pea-green sail on the far horizon,--
Singing the Jumbly Chorus still
As he sate all day on the grassy hill,--
    'Far and few, far and few,
    Are the lands where the Jumblies live;
    Their heads are green, and their hands are blue
    And they went to sea in a sieve.'
But when the sun was low in the West,
  The Dong arose and said;--
--'What little sense I once possessed
  'Has quite gone out of my head!'--
And since that day he wanders still
By lake or forest, marsh and hill,
Singing--'O somewhere, in valley or plain
'Might I find my Jumbly Girl again!
'For ever I'll seek by lake and shore
'Till I find my Jumbly Girl once more!'
    Playing a pipe with silvery squeaks,
    Since then his Jumbly Girl he seeks,
    And because by night he could not see,
    He gathered the bark of the Twangum Tree
      On the flowery plain that grows.
      And he wove him a wondrous Nose,--
    A Nose as strange as a Nose could be!
Of vast proportions and painted red,
And tied with cords to the back of his head.
    --In a hollow rounded space it ended
    With a luminous Lamp within suspended,
      All fenced about
      With a bandage stout
      To prevent the wind from blowing it out;--
    And with holes all round to send the light,
    In gleaming rays on the dismal night.
And now each night, and all night long,
Over those plains still roams the Dong;
And above the wall of the Chimp and Snipe
You may hear the sqeak of his plaintive pipe
While ever he seeks, but seeks in vain
To meet with his Jumbly Girl again;
Lonely and wild--all night he goes,--
The Dong with a luminous Nose!
And all who watch at the midnight hour,
From Hall or Terrace, or lofty Tower,
Cry, as they trace the Meteor bright,
Moving along through the dreary night,--
    'This is the hour when forth he goes,
    'The Dong with a luminous Nose!
    'Yonder--over the plain he goes,
      'He goes!
      'He goes;
    'The Dong with a luminous Nose!'

From September 1975 through January of 1976, I had the honor of representing my college (Glassboro State) in an exchange program with another school in London (Trent Park Polytech). I had always dreamed of spending time in London, since my favorite music mostly came from the UK: Soft Machine, Caravan, Robert Wyatt, Gong & Henry Cow… Besides attending school and taking courses in modern poetry and literature, my goal was to meet and interview members of the Canterbury Scene. I was fortunate to have spoken with Elton Dean, Lol Coxhill, Dave Stewart, Hugh Hopper, Mike Ratledge, Keith Tippett, John Marshall, Fred Frith, Chris Cutler Steve Hillage & others. Most of them, I have remained friends with more than 40 years later. I purchased more than 100 records while I was there, many of which changed my life, making me a music freak/collector of British jazz/rock/prog ever since.

One of the records I purchased then was an album by a British jazz composer named Neil Ardley called ‘A Symphony of Amaranths’ (rel 1972). I had learned of Neil Ardley from a concert I attended (in December of 1975) which was the premiere of a later work called, “A Kaleidoscope of Rainbows” and which featured an extended version of Nucleus as his ensemble with special guest Barbara Thompson taking a soprano sax solo that brought tears to eyes of the audience and a standing ovation. The first side of ‘A Symphony of Amaranths’ was dedicated to Duke Ellington & Gil Evans, which makes perfect sense since it sounds like their music. The second side, however featured the above whimsical poem of Edward Lear, spoken/sung by Ivor Cutler. Mr. Cutler was a true British eccentric actor/storyteller & teacher. He appeared in the Beatles’ film ‘Magical Mystery Tour’, is featured on Robert Wyatt’s masterpiece, ‘Rock Bottom’. “The Dong with the Luminous Nose” is a fractured fairy tale of sorts and has remained a a favorite of mine ever since. I memorized it way back when and have performed it at jam sessions on a couple of occasions. The more I think about it, the more I realize that is does make sense, you just have to read below the surface a bit. It still inspires silly laughter if you let it. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG - 5/2/19

Shalom Friends of DMG:

Yesterday, May 1st, 2019, was the 28th Anniversary of DOWNTOWN MUSIC GALLERY!?! There were allegedly 100 record store in Manhattan when we opened at 211 East 5th St. in 1991. Hard to believe that there are less than a dozen left at this point in the Big Apple. I am so glad that we have always been a home from Creative Music Recordings, the final (vinyl?) frontier in a tough town with expensive rents and a tendency to kill off most of the Mom & Pop stores, that make this place a unique, cultural center. More than 6,000 of you get and hopefully read the weekly DMG newsletter which helps us to spread the word. I am currently working on a special anniversary gig with Tisziji Munoz, John Medeski, Nels Cline & others, so please be patient. Folks often ask me/us, how long can we keep going? This is a great job for yours truly and the other folks who work here so I hope to keep it going for as long as I can. Please come down to visit us when you are in town and check out the weekly gigs that occur almost every Sunday. A special toast to DMG 28!

Today Treasures begin with this Cosmic Rarity:

KAORU ABE - What Beyond [a/k/a ‘Winter 1972’](King Harvest 206230608: Japan) Featuring the legendary Kaoru Abe on solo alto sax, recorded in Osaka on December 16th of 1972. Originally released sometime in 1973 or 1974 on the Sound Works label out of Osaka, this was a bootleg LP of Abe in full-flowing solo action. The original record came in a plain white sleeve, the label made no mention of Abe's name, and they came with a very high price tag for the time. Needless to say, this has since become an incredibly rare record, unseen by even the most dedicated of Abe collectors. Rarity aside, this is an utterly thrilling missive from Abe's most uncompromising and satisfying period. As yet a victim self-abuse, his utterly distinctive voice on alto rings swift, clear and true, scattering diamond shards of light in its wake. Stunningly concentrated and sure-footed -- it needs to be heard." -- Alan Cummings. "Kaoru Abe died at the early age of 29, living life fast and hard and burning out quickly. He was an uncompromising free/jazz saxist with an intense, completely focused and utterly distinctive sound. The DIW label in Japan once released an astonishing 10-CD set of solo sax which is now out-of-print, as well as a single solo CD and three strong duos with guitarist Masayuki Takayanagi. There are just two pieces on this disc totaling 46 & 1/2 minutes and this is all we need. By December of 1972, there were very few folks playing live or recording solo sax performances. Anthony Braxton's radical 'For Alto' was released in 1968 and Evan Parker was just beginning his journey of solo sax gigs. As a big fan of solo sax sets & records (like Lol Coxhill, Steve Lacy, John Zorn or Ned Rothenberg), this is disc is the holy grail. Mr. Abe ranges from shrieks to tenderness to explosive moments, making every note count. I have played this disc a half dozen times already and continue to be amazed by what I hear. Kaoru Abe is speaking directly to us through his alto sax and you best wake up and listen hard. The rewards are plentiful." - Bruce Lee Gallanter, Downtown Music Gallery
Please note - this was released a while back on CD by PSF (as 'Winter 72'), and not from the master tape, and as it turns out, unauthorized, and now withdrawn. This CD on King Harvest is from the owner of the recording, and is transferred beautifully from the master tape!
CD $24 [Second LTD Edition of 200 & we now have 15 copies]

ELLIOTT SHARP With GIANCARLO SCHIAFFINI / WALTER PRATI / FRANCESCA GEMMO / GAK SATO / SERGIO ARMAROLI / STEVE PICCOLO - Syzygy (Dodicilune Dischi 418; Italy) Featuring: Elliott Sharp on guitar, computer & compositions, Giancarlo Schiaffini on trombone, Walter Prati on electric cello, Gak Sato on theremin, Sergio Armaroli on vibes, Francesca Gemmo on piano and Steve Piccolo on el. bass & objects. Longtime Downtown composer & multi-instrumentalist, Elliott Sharp, consistently juggles numerous projects, bands, conceptual ideas, while blending different genres or styles. “The images (of the musical scores) in Syzygy were all generated from one page of musical notation and are inextricably linked.. Using a suite of processing strategies, the resultant images remain in a dynamic but oblique relationship with each other, always connected as they metamorphosize.” - E. Sharp.
There are two vastly different versions of “Syzygy” on this two disc set, a studio and a live version, each on separate CD’s. The seven piece ensemble featured on this two disc sets includes mostly (all?) Italian-based or born musicians, some of whom we know from previous collaborations: Schiaffini (respected elder who has worked w/ Andrea Centazzo, Lol Coxhill & Mario Sciano), Mr. Prati (w/ Evan Parker & Robert Wyatt) and Mr. Piccolo (original bassist for the Lounge Lizards).
Mr. Sharp has gathered a fascinating cast of musicians who are specialists in the blurring the lines between written and improvised music. The studio CD is first and was recorded at Studio II Pollaio in Ronco Biellese, Italy. It begins, quietly, carefully with minimal instrumentation slowly becoming more dense. Since this was recorded in a studio, the balance between the acoustic and electric instruments is well-defined. As the density and tempo increase, we hear several layers emerging and submerging. The interaction between all the members of the septet and flow or currents are fascinating, since they make sense of the way this piece unfolds. At times, its sounds like a ghost or spirit is floating or moving around in the mix, eerie, luminous sounds interweaving with more skeletal-like electric strings. Different combinations of the players come together, having conversations while the flow of ideas move through an organic (sounding) network. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

MICHEL EDELIN QUINTET & JOHN GREAVES - Echoes of Henry Cow (Rogue Art 0089; France) Michel Edelin Quintet - John Greaves - "Echoes of Henry Cow" - Michel Edelin (flute, alto flute, bass flute), Sophia Domancich (piano, Fender Rhodes), Sylvain Kassap (clarinet, bass clarinet), Stéphane Kerecki (double bass), Simon Goubert (drums) and John Greaves (spoken words). This album should in no way be mistaken for a "tribute" to Henry Cow, let alone a faithful recreation, in spirit and/or letter, of their music, rather – and this is how the title chose by Michel Édelin should be understood - its echoes (much transformed during its long journey through time, space, memory and the mysterious twists and turns of the creative process) in his own musical inner world.” - Aymeric Leroy, excerpts from the liner notes.
With each of his four previous discs on Rogue Art, Michel Edelin, has shown himself to be one of the greatest flutists alive, no matter who he works with. I was intrigued to hear about this release since tributes to Henry Cow (my favorite progressive band of all) are extremely rare. Choosing Henry Cow’s bassist, John Greaves, to do spoken word recitations of several Henry Cow songs from ‘In Praise of Learning’, seems like another great idea, since their lyrics were always well considered and thought-provoking. The personnel here includes two masters: clarinetist Sylvain Kassap (longtime Rogue Art staple) and keyboardist, Sophia Domancich (who has worked with Elton Dean, Paul Dunmall & Pip Pyle). I haven’t heard this disc yet, but a promo is on its way now and I can’t wait to get my hands on that copy ASAP! - BLG/DMG

ALLEN LOWE with JULIUS HEMPHILL / MATT SHIPP / DAVID MURRAY / MARC RIBOT / NELS CLINE / DON BYRON / JOE ALBANY / ROSWELL RUDD / GARY BARTZ / DOC CHEATHAM / RANDY SANDKE / BOBBY ZANKEL / et al - An Avant-Garde of Our Own: Disconnected Works 1980-2018 (ESP-Disk 5034; USA) Saxophonist/guitarist/composer/music historian/ provocateur Allen Lowe spans the history of jazz in his music in a way that few besides Jaki Byard, Beaver Harris, Steven Bernstein, and Air have ever done, intertwining blues, early jazz, bebop, and the avant-garde. A prolific composer who was incorporating American roots music into his jazz decades before it was hip, he has led project bands featuring a broad array of jazz greats ranging from Doc Cheatham, Randy Sandke, Joe Albany, Don Byron, Ken Peplowski, and Percy France to Matthew Shipp, Julius Hemphill, Marc Ribot, Roswell Rudd, David Murray, Gary Bartz, Nels Cline, Ray Anderson, DJ Logic, Kalaparusha Maurice McIntyre, and Hamiet Bluiett. With two notable but out-of-print exceptions, most of his work has been released on his own Constant Sorrow label. ESP-Disk' has long admired his work and is happy to partner with him on the career-spanning An Avant Garde Of Our Own: Disconnected Works 1980-2018, which consists of four CDs (3-6) of previously unreleased material and four thematically arranged CDs (1-2, 7-8) collecting a wide variety of material that was mostly previously -- but not widely -- available.”

PHIL RANELIN with PHAROAH SANDERS / BIG BLACK / HENRY FRANKLIN / KAMASI WASHINGTON / CALVIN KEYS / DAYNA STEPHENS / PABLO CALAGERO / et al - Phil Ranelin Collected 2003-2019 (Wide Hive Records 0351; USA) “Phil Ranelin Collected 2003-2019 features songs with Pharoah Sanders, Kamasi Washington, Donald ''Duck'' Bailey, Henry Franklin, Big Black, Calvin Keys, Roger Glenn and many, many more. SWISS JAZZ ORCHESTRA & GUILLERMO KLEIN - self/titled (Sunnyside 1552; USA) Argentine composer, musician & multi-bandleader, Guillermo Klein, turns 50 this year and now has some 10 discs out on the Sunnyside label. He leads a band called Los Gauchos and has done several collaborations with other Downtown-based musicians. For the past few years, Mr. Klein has been working with the Swiss Jazz Orchestra, who began in 2003 and have a regular Monday night residency in Bern, Switzerland. Mr. Klein plays Fender Rhodes piano and has composed & arranged all of the songs for this session. From the gitgo, “Cordoba”, Mr. Klein’s sly electric piano is at the center setting up that hypnotic line, and setting the cerebral dreamy vibe. Adrian Pfugshaupt’s luscious toned alto sax & Samuel Leopold’s sublime guitar are featured on “Riqueza Abandonada”, which features lovely, haunting horn arrangements. On “Aqua (Para Mantener)”, Mr. Klein’s writing for the horn section is especially warm, thoughtful and enchanting. What makes this special is this: whenever any member of the orchestra takes a solo, the rest of horns & rhythm team swell organically around them, rising and falling like waves of the beach. Most of the solos are low key, restrained and quietly uplifting, sounding even better when the other horn provide a gorgeous cushion underneath. There are even some more progressive sounding music featured here, check out “Paredon”, which has some of those Philip Glass/Steve Reich-like interlocking lines going on. There is so much great music here that I don’t want to keep describing but let it be for you to discover. Guillermo Klein has never ceased to amaze me and here he is again with an even better ensemble and disc to recommend entirely. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

ALLEN RAVENSTINE - Four Stories ReR Megacorp ArBook 1; USA) "Slim, 44-page perfect bound, paperback containing four stories. Illustrated by Mary Thomas. These four stories were written while Allen was working and touring with the Cleveland band, Pere Ubu, and refer directly to those years. Previously published in The Cleveland Edition, The Re Records Quarterly and The Penguin Book of Rock and Roll Writing. Allen Ravenstine was born in Canton, Ohio in 1950. In 1968 his parents were killed in a car crash. He was a student at Ohio State University when students protesting the Vietnam War were shot at Kent State. All universities in Ohio closed, so he left Columbus, where he was studying English literature, never to return. In the following years he worked with an EML analog synthesizer and a Teac four-track tape recorder and in 1974 bought the Plaza, a ramshackle apartment building in Cleveland's inner city, which soon became the home of painters, poets, writers and musicians. In 1975, he co-founded the legendary Cleveland band, Pere Ubu in which he worked until 1988... leaving to become an airline pilot. Taking up music again in 2012, he appeared with Robert Wheeler in the film 'I Dream of Wires', recorded two album length records, 'Farm Report' and 'City Desk'. In 2014, he released his first solo CD, 'The Pharaoh's Bee'. The critically acclaimed 'Waiting for the Bomb' followed in 2018. Allen lives in New York City with his wife Ann."

Warehouse Find, A Half Dozen Copies of this Discs found Amongst the Ruins…

DAVEY WILLIAMS And NUMB RIGHT THUMB - Texas Was Delicious (Megaton 06; USA) Featuring Davey Williams on guitar & devices, Steven Gannon on guitar & devices, Jim Ivy on sax & sampler, Pat Greene on violin, Pat Wood on marimba & percussion and Dana Fasano on drums. We originally got copies of this disc way back in 2000 from an old friend of mine, Jim Ivy, who I’ve known for several decades since we both have attending the Victo Fest since the early days in the mid-eighties. Mr. Ivy lives in Orlando, Florida, where this disc was recorded in 1999. I figured with the passing of Davey Williams last month (April of 2019), I searched for discs that were still available which featured MR. Williams and there were so few. There are several discs from later period Curlew, as well as a few with Italian percussionist Andrea Centazzo on Ictus.
Odd, post-punk sort of weirdness. Both guitarists work well together, one or both playing slide in strange ways when this discs begins. At times it seems as if both guitars are floating, interweaving on top while the rest of the band provide an alternating current or flow down below. There are some marching drums on “The Fish of 2000”, with distant horn(s) hovering in the distance. There are some interesting, unpredictable twists & turns going on here with one or both guitars consistently weaving their wares. Since there is no bassist here, one of the guitarists also takes care of the occasional bass-line. At times it seems as if these players are working out a secret code since we do hear certain lines or combinations which connect in ways which are not that obvious. From time to time, one guitar will be played with strange slide lines while the other guitar intersects with selective rhythmic counter-balance. There are times when it seems as if the ensemble is about spin out of control, yet one of the musicians will steer that back into more directed currents or combinations. The marimba player sounds like he is in his own world on occasion, creating a cushion of calm underneath while the guitars ebb & flow, sputter & add fragmented spice. It all comes together on the last two tracks which evokes wizards & demons at play. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

KEVIN HAYS & CHIARA IZZI - Across The Sea (Via Veneto Jazz 128; Italy) “ Jando Music/Via Veneto Jazz release Across The Sea, by Kevin Hays and Chiara Izzi. This album is the outcome of an encounter of two musicians so distant and yet so inexorably close. A project where the music is always tangible, not volatile, particularly when born under a bright inspirational sky. Those holding the reins of this visionary journey between jazz and pop, America and Italy, dream and lyricism are, without doubt, the two artists: Chiara, with her warm, Mediterranean voice and Kevin, one of the most celebrated and admired pianists and composers on the American jazz scene who can boast distinguished pop music collaborations (James Taylor). Across The Sea was recorded at the legendary Sear Sound in New York; the outcome of diligent project work, with the collaboration of several guests such as Omer Avital, Gregoire Maret, Nir Felder, Chris Potter, and Rogério Boccato that simply amplify the awareness that this shared journey, so rich and adventurous, began under the best auspices. The compelling predominance of melody, the osmosis between vocals and keyboards and the amazing confluence of their singing voices, have sublimated the tasks related to production into subtle finishing touches of a chisel, aromas, invitations and "further" sounds magically converging into the final work. The French horn in the emblematic "Two For The Road", the ancestral oud in the Miles Davis classic "Nardis", the punctual and decisive harmonica in Pat Metheny's "James", the caressing guitar in "Circles Of The Mind", the sinuous saxophone in "Viaggio Elegiaco", are just a few examples.”

GUIDED BY VOICES - Warp And Woof (GBVI 091; USA) "Following Guided By Voice's sprawling double-album Zeppelin Over China, Robert Pollard has written and recorded another full-length in record-breaking time. It's Warp And Woof, exuberantly barreling through twenty-four songs in just thirty-seven minutes with a brevity similar to mid-90s GBV albums Alien Lanes and Vampire On Titus. GBV kicked this one out in a flash, recorded in studios, club soundchecks, hotel rooms and even in the tour van. After completing Zeppelin, Pollard felt the itch to record a few EPs. Just as GBV had done back in 1994, he would use them to channel his ever-flowing ideas to an outlet. But when a magical boombox writing session produced six fully formed songs in under half an hour, Pollard realized he had an album on his hands. What to do? With a band so formidable they've been dubbed the Golden Age of GBV, they completed much of the recording on the road. The 2018 Space Gun Tour provided impromptu recording venues. Pollard recorded vocals in hotel rooms, complimentary condominiums, and small studios. Doug Gillard cut guitar tracks for 'End It With Light' through his Mesa Boogie rig at the soundcheck at the Ottobar in Baltimore. Bobby Bare Jr. recorded his spacey main rhythm guitars for album closer, 'Time Remains in Central Position' at the same show, but in the backstage green room. Kevin March added drum tracks in a studio in his hometown Montclair, New Jersey. Gillard played guitar on 'Bury the Mouse' in a van hurtling at 60-plus m.p.h., and Mark Shue laid bass on 'Angelic Weirdness' as he balanced on the speeding van's bench seat..."

BLAINE L. REININGER - Madchen In Koffer (And Other Results)(Klanggalarie 305; Austria) "Blaine L. Reininger needs no special introduction. He is an American post-punk, new-wave and alternative pop singer, songwriter, musician, multi-instrumentalist (particularly violin), writer and performer. He is known for being a member of the group Tuxedomoon since 1977 after co-founding it with Steven Brown and, latterly, for a notable music and theatre career, both as a soloist and contributor to other artists' recordings, including The Durutti Column, Snakefinger, Anna Domino, Savage Republic or Paul Haig. After learning the violin and guitar during childhood and studying music theory in San Francisco, Reininger formed the band Tuxedomoon with composer, singer, musician and college-mate Steven Brown and appeared on early albums such as Half Mute, Desire and Suite En Sous-Sol before departing early in 1983 to pursue a solo career. He permanently rejoined Tuxedomoon in 1988 and has subsequently appeared on more recent recordings such as Vapour Trails, issued in 2007 by independent label Crammed Discs. In 2015 Reininger's friend Albrecht Hirche shot his first feature film, a raod movie entitled Mädchen in Koffer. Blaine contributed the soundtrack which is surprisingly song based and put it on his Bandcamp page in 2018. Klanggalerie are now very happy to present you the first CD version of this music. In addition to the score, we have chosen another 9 tracks from Blaine's vast archive to make this a full-length album."

THE MODERN JAZZ QUARTET - 1957 Cologne, Gurzenich Concert Hall (Jazzline/PÖ 77006: GERMANY) “The Modern Jazz Quartet's 1957 Cologne, Gurzenich Concert Hall is an original master concert recording from November 6, 1957, recorded at Gürzenich Concert Hall in Cologne. Previously unreleased, it was retrospectively released for the first time in 2010. Another release in WDR's The Cologne Broadcasts series, it was mastered by Thomas Sehringer. Both formats include musician and composer credits, plus liner notes by journalist and radio host Karsten Mützelfeldt in English and German. The Modern Jazz Quartet (MJQ) was a jazz combo established in 1952 that played music influenced by classical, cool jazz, blues and bebop. For most of its history the Quartet consisted of John Lewis (piano), Milt Jackson (vibraphone), Percy Heath (double bass), and Connie Kay (drums). The group grew out of the rhythm section of Dizzy Gillespie's big band from 1946 to 1948, which consisted of Lewis and Jackson along with bassist Ray Brown and drummer Kenny Clarke. STEELEYE SPAN - All Things are Quite Silent: Complete Recordings (Cherry Tree Box 022; UK) ”A folk rock institution for the last five decades, Steeleye Span's lengthy and illustrious history is studded with significant achievements, hit records, industry awards and sell-out gigs. Nevertheless, it's generally acknowledged by critics and fans alike that, in artistic terms, their most enduring legacy lies with the triptych of early 1970s albums that they recorded prior to founder member and folk rock legend Ashley Hutchings opting to leave the band that he'd quit Fairport Convention to painstakingly put together. Charting the early development of one of British folk rock's most important and iconic acts, All Things Are Quite Silent brings together those three classic albums and adds several additional studio recordings from the same timeframe, including three versions of the group's witty a cappella revamp of rock'n'roll classic 'Rave On’.”

UT - Conviction (Out Records 004; USA) "Next in UT's reissue and remastered back catalog series, their first studio album Conviction, originally released in 1986. This 2019 remastered reissue will include song lyrics, photos of the band and an introduction by Stewart Lee. Radical rock group Ut was founded by Nina Canal, Jacqui Ham and Sally Young in 1978. Originating in the downtown NYC No Wave scene and inheritors of the collision between rock, free jazz and the avant-garde, the band exploded the rigidity of conventional rock, constructing songs through collective improvisation, swapping instruments and rotating the role of singer/director. Migrating to London in 1981, UT played with bands like The Fall and The Birthday Party and released music on its own label Out Records, including Live At The Venue in 1982, the UT EP in 1984, the Confidential 12-inch in 1985 and the LP Conviction in 1986. UT became a favorite of BBC's John Peel and recorded sessions for his show in '84, '85 and '87. Joining forces with Blast First in 1987, they released the live compilation album Early Live Life and then the highly critically acclaimed In Gut's House in 1988, which made the year's NME Top 50 Albums."

PRINCE MOHAMED - African Roots (Burning Sounds 916; UK) "George Nooks first found success performing under the name Prince Mohamed, as a deejay on discomix tracks for producer Joe Gibbs. His first album, a joint effort with General Echo, People Are You Ready, was released on the United Artists subsidiary Ballistic in 1978. LEE "SCRATCH" PERRY & SUBATOMIC SOUND SYSTEM - Super Ape Returns To Conquer (Echo Beach 129; Germany) 41 years later, Lee "Scratch" Perry uses today's sound system to revisit his classic Black Ark album that defined Jamaican dub music, reincarnating the magic for the sound system generation. Big question about it: "How do you improve on a masterpiece?" Lee "Scratch" Perry defined dub music with his seminal 1976 Super Ape album, and he returns with New York City's Subatomic Sound System to conquer again, definitively reincarnating the magic of his Black Ark studio in Jamaica, heavy on Ethiopian horns and percussion, while reinvigorating it with the 21st century booming bass and beats that capture the energy of their innovative live electronic show. Largely known as the mentor to Bob Marley, Perry's influence has transcended reggae. Since 2010, he has toured with NYC's Subatomic Sound System, his go-to band for recreating his Black Ark studio sound live on stage, in new exciting ways as a one-of-a-kind hybrid of beat heavy electronics and live musicians, including original Black Ark studio percussionist Larry McDonald. Subatomic Sound System has been pushing the envelope of electronic music in combination with reggae since their inception in 1999. In dub, Lee "Scratch" Perry is a star at organizing and remixing the music with drum and bass in the forefront and tweaking knobs and faders, adding effects like a jazz improvisation. In the 1970s, the idea of a producer as a star, rather than a singer or musician, seemed crazy, but looking across the world of star DJ producers, he is rightly acknowledged as a visionary as well. There are many stories to be told, but this album follows on the mission of the tour which has the goal of reaching out to old fans and new fans. As sound system culture continues to expand globally with reggae and beyond, these are DJ-friendly heavyweight versions of Scratch material that makes sense in the 21st century. "Scratch" started his music career as a dancer so he loves to get a party started even at 81. The album shows that Scratch was 40 years ahead of his time with Super Ape, and that at 81, he's more relevant to youth culture than ever. The original "Burning Man", "Scratch" was called "the Salvador Dali of music" by Keith Richards and Bounty Killer hailed him as "the greatest Jamaican artist of all time". Features: Jahdan Blakkamoore, Screechy Dan, and Ari Up of The Slits. Includes CD.

TERRY RILEY - A Rainbow In Curved Air (Music on Vinyl 046; Netherlands) "Keyboard virtuoso Terry Riley started experimenting with different instruments in the '50s. One of his electronic music landmarks is his third album A Rainbow In Curved Air. Through the use of overdubbing, he recorded all the instruments to feature on the title track. The composition consists of three movements, each representing another part of his musical influences. As the song progresses, its structure goes through frequent changes. It's a colorful, psychedelic, atmospheric and revolutionary song. The second track consists of a loop of saxophones and is the dreamy and calm opposite of the title track. Fans of electronic music, such as Tangerine Dream and Klaus Schulze, would love this record. Taking inspiration from Hindustani classical music and jazz techniques, Riley's masterpiece influenced many musicians, from the likes of Brian Eno to Emeralds. A Rainbow In Curved Air 50th anniversary limited edition is available as 500 individually numbered copies on transparent vinyl."
LP $30

DAVY GRAHAM - The Guitar Player (Music on Vinyl 2316; Netherlands) "The Guitar Player was Davy Graham's first full length LP, after releasing his EP -- A.D. two years earlier. This unique album combines his interesting and virtuoso guitar play with some excellent arrangements. With his guitar style he contributed to the musical changes in the early 1960s, where blues, rock and folk started to play a more prominent role in the music scene. The man crosses into blues, jazz, folk, Arabic music and more, often in the same song. It's an essential album and one of the greatest instrumental acoustic guitar records released in the 1960's. British guitar virtuoso Davy Graham inspired a multitude of artists such as Paul Simon, Jimmy Page and Jimi Hendrix. Combining different music genres, Graham proved to be one of the 20th century's most versatile guitarists and songwriters."

OLIVER NELSON with ERIC DOLPHY / BILL EVANS / GEORGE BARROW / PAUL CHAMBERS / ROY HAYNES /et al - The Blues And The Abstract Truth (Tempo Records 005; UK) "Originally released on Impulse! in 1961, The Blues And The Abstract Truth is Oliver Nelson's fourth and most acclaimed album. He assembled Freddie Hubbard, Eric Dolphy, Bill Evans, Paul Chambers, Roy Haynes, and George Barrow, several of them at their peaks, to perform six originals that have left Nelson regarded as one of the 1960s' best jazz composers and saxophonists. Produced by Creed Taylor. In the December 21, 1961 issue of Downbeat Magazine jazz critic Don DeMicheal commented, 'Nelson's playing is like his writing: thoughtful, unhackneyed, and well-constructed. Hubbard steals the solo honors with some of his best playing on record. Dolphy gets off some good solos too, his most interesting one on 'Yearnin'.'"

CREAM With ERIC CLAPTON / JACK BRUCE / GINGER BAKER - Fresh Cream (Vinyl Lovers 900167; Italy) 2019 repress. When the band formed in 1966, Eric Clapton was already fairly well known by this time, having already performed and recorded with the Yardbirds and John Mayall's Bluesbreakers. But it wasn't until Cream that Clapton became a global superstar. Breaking free of the traditional rock & roll song for a more improvisational/jazz-influenced take, the band's long jams gave birth to a whole new approach to rock music. When their debut album ‘Fresh Cream’ was released in 1966, it immediately became the standard by which all other bands of the era were judged. Includes 5 bonus tracks. 180 gram virgin vinyl.

DMG 28 WEEKLY/MONTHLY USED CD Sale List:

When I originally was asked to look over the collection of my good friend, the late Mike Panico, a few months ago, I felt bad dealing with this since his death was so sudden and we were and are still mourning his loss. We have just gotten in around 500 CD’s from his collection which will take us some time to absorb, price, out in our database and sell. A special thanks to our friends at Academy Records, especially my pal Charles Hutchinson. In order to make this newsletter a bit longer, I am including a list of around 100 CDs which have come in over the past month or so. It will take us a month or two to price and put out the rest so please be patient. You might want to list a few alternate titles so that you hit the minimum for the % sale. I would like to raise a toast to Mike Panico, a good friend to many of us who make up the Downtown Scene & International Creative Music Community - BLG/DMG
