DMG Newsletter for Friday, December 28th, 2018: Happy New (Y)Ears!

HAPPY NEW (Y)EARS to All of the DMG Extended Family!

Friends, the past year has been difficult in so many ways!

I am not going to list all of the things that we continue to complain about, so…

Let us remember all of the good things that have made 2018 memorable in positive ways!

The closing of The Old Stone after 13 years with a weeks worth of all-star Downtown improvisers playing transcendent music during the last week of February. Thanks to the young Dead-fan who gave me that magic brownie on several occasions at the Old & New Stone’s! The New Stone opened full-time (5 nights a week) on March 1st and has been a great place to hear challenging music for 5 nights a week! The Victo and the Vision Festivals were both awesome! The DMG Anniversary set with KALABALICK at The New School was womderful! Several JOHN ZORN Fests at the Frick Museum, Guggenheim & National Sawdust! Way too many great sets at Roulette, I-Beam, Cornelia Street Cafe, Jazz Gallery, Le Pousson Rouge, Arts for Art, Greenwich House… The MIKE PANICO Memorial Concert at Roulette earlier this month was a very special occasion for all who attended. The ongoing weekly free music in-store concerts at DMG have been better attended and still provides a source of inspiration to those who need it. Thanks to Douglas L. & Dave G. for their constant support. Response to our Instagram feed has been incredible!

Special thanks to all the women I’ve become close with over the past year, you inspire me in so many ways: Janis P, Meghan D, Christine & Eric, Roberta & Richard, Gwenolee Z, Jessica H, Jennifer N and Huguette C. Let’s all get up and dance and embrace life while we can!

I am currently working on my year end best of lists which I hope to transmit sometime in January. I will again ask a dozen journalists, musicians and serious listeners for their own lists. - BLG

The CORNELIA STREET CAFE Will Close After January 4th of 2019!

Aside from The Stone and the DMG Sunday FREE Music Series, the one performance place that I’ve attended the most over the past decade is the Cornelia Street Cafe, in the West Village. After some forty years, the legendary Cornelia Street Cafe will close its doors on January 4th of 2019, next week. I have attended 100’s of gigs there, having drinks, eating their tasty food and meeting friends, mostly in the past decade or so. Here is a list of some of the musicians I’ve caught there time after time: Mary Halvorson, Ingrid Laubrock, Tom Rainey, Tony Malaby, Kris Davis, Jon Irabagon, Barry Altschul, Mario Pavone, Mark Helias, Joel Harrison, Peter Evans, MOPDTK, Rez Abbasi, George Garzone, Angelica Sanchez, many, many more. Our late friend, Peter Cox, was there so often that whenever I go there, I think of him. Cornelia Street is very small and cosy, the menu downstairs and upstairs was & is pretty great! For those of us who thrive to hear New Music & challenging sounds as often as is possible, it is a sad day and we will not forget about this treasured place for many years.

This Sunday, December 30th will feature the Tom Rainey Trio with Ingrid Laubrock & Mary Halvorson at 8pm. This amazing trio has performed at Cornelia Street every year during the last week of December for as long as I can remember. A number of my friends will be attending this night and we will drink a toast to the CORNELIA STREET CAFE! Be there or be square!

Big Bundle Sale # 2:

The GAZELL label was founded and run by Sam Charters, the great author/music journalist/record producer whose long career showed his devotion the varied types of music that he loved and championed: blues, New Orleans, jazz: free & swinging, zydeco, folk, psych, rock… Mr. Charters obviously put his heart, soul and sonic expertise into whatever session he produced. I can hear his magic in each and every one of the below discs. We are starting to run low on a few of these titles and will probably not sell out of a few other of the titles as well. You should remember that Sam Charters produced one of the greatest psychedelic rock records of all: Country Joe & The Fish - ‘Electric Music for the Mind and Body’ (Vanguard Records, 1967)

If you take the entire 25 CD bundle, the cost is $150. A great deal for those collectors out their who want to do some serious listening, this is a great place to start, especially if you have eclectic, diverse tastes. You can also purchase any individual copies while supplies last. All of these discs are in jewel cases so if you want to save some money on shipping, we can remove any of the single jewel case CD’s. Let us know if you want us to do this.

MILES DAVIS With JOHN McLAUGHLIN/SONNY SHARROCK/WAYNE SHORTER/STEVE GROSSMAN /HERBIE HANCOCK/CHICK COREA/KEITH JARRETT/DAVE HOLLAND/MICHAEL HENDERSON/JACK DeJOHNETTE/BILLY COBHAM et al - Vol 7: Jack Johnson: The Complete Sessions (Columbia Legacy 86359; USA) [1st edition with CD sized box and metal spine] With John McLaughlin, Bennie Maupin, Chick Corea, Wayne Shorter, Jack DeJohnette, Herbie Hancock, Keith Jarrett, Steve Grossman, Michael Henderson, Ron Carter, Sonny Sharrock, Airto, Dave Holland, Wayne Shorter, and Hermeto Pascoal Of all the Miles Davis recordings, the sessions that created a single, two-selection LP produced by Teo Macero called A Tribute To Jack Johnson have been the most apocryphal. While the album itself was a confounding obscurity upon release - due to its proximity to the inferior yet infinitely more label-promoted Live at the Fillmore East - its influence has become the monolith of the first complete fusion of jazz and rock; it also cemented a place in the history books for guitarist John McLaughlin, whose raw, slash-and-burn playing is the axis around which the entire album turns. This five-CD set was recorded in 16 weeks, from February 18 to June 4 of 1970, during which a revolving cast of musicians entered the Davis/Macero laboratory for a series of mind-bending, sometimes inspired, sometimes maddeningly monotonous recording dates, where the creation of backbeat-driven grooves and short, rhythmic rock- and funk-inflected riffs were the only preconceptions and everything else flowed from there for better or worse. No less than five separate releases benefited from these sessions; they include Live-Evil, Get Up With It, Directions, and Big Fun. The two cuts that make up A Tribute to Jack Johnson, "Right Off" and "Yesternow," make up the last two selections on disc five of this set. The arrangement of these sides is chronological; thus there are not only numerous takes of a single composition, but insertion and remake takes of it as well. For instance, there are two complete takes of "Willie Nelson,", two inserted versions and two remakes all in sequenced in a row here. Likewise, herein appears the strange genesis, deconstruction, and rebirth of "Go Ahead John" that appeared in on Big Fun. Still, despite the hypnotic grooves where already elongated tunes turn into sonic labyrinths, the historical importance of these sessions, and sometimes the sheer listening pleasure they offer, cannot be overestated. Take, for example, the fact that there are 17 previously unissued performances here and 14 takes and alternates that have never been issued in full form. As a small example, the official unearthing of the "Duran" alternate take offers so much more than the circulated one - including different instrumentation (as a number of titles here do in their varying versions) that it is nearly a different tune altogether. Or the roots of "Right Off" and "Yesternow," which appear on disc three, compared to the final, heavily edited versions on the album. Evolution becomes not only the crux of these Davis sessions, but a whole new way of making jazz records is revealed - and they are jazz records. These sides reveal how, some 32 years later, Davis' own playing remains firmly committed to the jazz ideal despite the fact that McLaughlin and others such as Bennie Maupin, Chick Corea, Wayne Shorter, Jack DeJohnette, Herbie Hancock, Keith Jarrett, Steve Grossman, Michael Henderson, Ron Carter, Sonny Sharrock, Airto, Dave Holland, Wayne Shorter, and Hermeto Pascoal were essentially playing jam- and riff-based rock here. The role of guitarist Sonny Sharrock is finally defined here. It has previously been discounted and has provided endless grist for the Davis rumor mill about how he was mixed out of the session. Yes, he was, but so was almost everyone but McLaughlin and Miles at one point or another. Check out Sharrock's killer slide playing that appears on the second insertion of "Willie Nelson" for evidence of his weighty presence. For those who worship at the McLaughlin altar, there are extra minutes of screaming, fuzz-drenched wailing on "Right Off" left on the floor by Macero. But this set is full of moments like that, moments - sometimes minutes - such as the previously unreleased "Sugar Ray," which is a futuristic look at post-punk noise with rhythm. While attempting to listen to this as a box is an admittedly long, arduous, and sometimes difficult task, listening to pieces and discs individually in a changer, is a deeply satisfying experience and gives us yet another dimension in the Miles aesthetic universe. If any series of recordings needed to be released to illuminate a unique and visionary period in Miles Davis' development as an artist, to document the most perfect fusion of jazz and rock, and dispite numerousl idle myths about its creation, it's these. This will be the grail for some Miles fans, for others another chapter i his genius and still for others an introduction to his process, form and function. What ever the cast, the music found here is stellar, brilliant and focused to the point of difficulty; it gives up its secrets and gifts slowly, but it widens and deepens the listener's understanding of Davis not only as a player, bandleader and composer, but as a music fan who indulged his love for the rock and soul (i.e. pop) without reservation or compromise. - Thom Jurek.

GREASY TRUCKERS PARTY [V.A. With HAWKWIND / MAN / BRINSLEY SCHWARZ / MAGIC MICHAEL] - London Roundhouse February 13th 1972 (EMI 5032352; UK) "The Greasy Truckers Party, as a double-LP set, was the Great White Whale of many a music lover's collecting efforts in the 1970s and '80s - always talked of being sighted by others and ever-eluding the best efforts. But here it is, on three very fully-packed CDs, minus the Henry Cow and Gong cuts, but now with the COMPLETE SETS of Man, Brinsley Schwarz, and Hawkwind (with Magic Michael & Friends thrown in for good measure), a legendary performance on a legendary night for each band. For those unaware, in the world of British underground rock, the Greasy Truckers Party, as it was billed at the London Roundhouse on February 13, 1972, looms about as large as the Monterey International Pop Festival does in American rock lore; it wasn't the biggest gig ever played by the bands involved, but for reasons of exposure, and resulting word-of-mouth, and the excerpted live album that followed, it came to define what they were capable of, and who they were. Man, who'd shown a lot of promise on their early records leading up to this event, ripped the envelope with the show they put on that night. Hawkwind, who'd enjoyed some recording success and made a big splash at the previous year's Glastonbury Fayre, was boasting a partly new lineup, with a rhythm section comprised of ex-Rocking Vicar Lemmy on bass and Simon King on drums -- they overcame some initial technical problems to do a live set that, despite being abbreviated in earlier releases of this performance, loomed large in their legend for more than a decade. And included in that set on this release is their first-ever performance of 'Silver Machine,' the song that -- with Lemmy shifted to lead vocals a few months later -- would propel the band to the number three spot on the U.K. singles charts. And then there was Brinsley Schwarz, who were in many ways the most improbable act on this bill -- where the other two groups were known for doing extended jams, running as much as 20 minutes at a clip, the Brinsleys did short songs mostly based on American country music and other traditional forms; indeed, their opening number, 'Country Girl,' sounds like a lost outtake from the Byrds' Sweetheart of the Rodeo, and is about as far removed as can be from the heavy electric jams of Man that preceded them, or the space rock extravaganzas of Hawkwind, who followed. Magic Michael, who fills out the last ten minutes of disc two, was a London hippie eccentric who was sort of the UK's answer to David Peel -- a future collaborator with Captain Sensible and Rat Scabies of the Damned, he's an acquired musical taste, but a startling cultural artifact of the time, and as long as his presence didn't keep any music off of the collection, you'll be glad that he's here. The packaging on this set is excellent as well, re-creating poster art and advertising and offering biographical information even on the acts that didn't get to perform (there was a power failure) or whose sets, interrupted by hecklers and fights, proved unusable. One couldn't hope or ask for more, 35 years after the fact."

COLEMAN HAWKINS - Portrait (Past Perfect 205434; Germany) This affordable box set is the best way to get all the Coleman Hawkins classics from 1929-1951.  If all you want is a single disc of this, get the Ken Burns CD instead.  But you'll miss the incredible discs #9 and 10 here, with "Organ Grinder Swing", "Lost In A Fog", and "Midnight Sun”. My favorite Coleman Hawkins came after the recordings here, but this set with a good booklet and full discographical details is all a Hawkins fan needs for the prewar and early bebop years.” - Ccex - rateyourmusic.com

JIMI HENDRIX - West Coast Seattle Boy: The Jimi Hendrix Anthology (Hendrix/Sony Legacy 88697769272; USA) 2010 five disc (four CDs DVD) box set that tracks Jimi's incredible journey from R&B sideman to international acclaim This collection presents the most sought after of Jimi's pre-Experience recordings as a sideman for such Rhythm & Blues stars as The Isley Brothers, Don Covay, Little Richard and others. The remaining three CDs feature previously unreleased and commercially unavailable studio recordings from every chapter of his career, live recordings with the Experience and Band Of Gypsys spanning 1967 through 1970. The studio recordings include never before released [or even bootlegged!] alternate versions of classics plus a previously unreleased version of 'Everlasting First', Jimi's 1970 celebrated collaboration with Arthur Lee & Love, an unheard 1967 studio session with Traffic's Dave Mason as well as an expanded presentation of Jimi's legendary session with jazz organist Larry Young. DVD features Jimi's life story in words, pictures, music and footage. West Coast Seattle Boy is an amazing chronological, career-spanning collection of Hendrix material, but it's far from a greatest-hits or career overview and is probably not intended for the casual Hendrix fan. It's more of an examination of Jimi's musical and artistic growth as a professional musician following his discharge from the Army. Disc one is a fantastic compilation of Jimi's appearances on record as a sideman with the likes of the Isley Brothers, Don Covay, and Little Richard. While the tunes are great, the actual Jimi quotient is pretty low. The Isley Brothers give him a couple hot breaks during his two stints with them and Jimi plays tremolo guitar on their lengthy ballad "Have You Ever Been Disappointed" and Little Richard's "I Don't Know What You Got But It's Got Me." Jimi does manage to peek through on a couple cuts, though. Rosa Lee Brooks' great "Utee" has a hot little solo and you can hear ideas that would later be reworked into "Little Wing" on the Icemen's "(My Girl) She's a Fox." The vast majority of these tracks are difficult to impossible to find, so it's great to have them all in one place. Disc two starts with some fascinating alternate mixes or takes of several tunes from Are You Experienced? in perfect sound. But these aren't actually "lost mixes" that Chas Chandler had stashed away all these years; they're recent remixes by Eddie Kramer (the original engineer for most Hendrix recordings) using the original multi-track recordings for the first time.” - excerpt from longer review found in DMG database.

LOVE [ARTHUR LEE et al] - The Blue Thumb Recordings - Complete: Out Here/False Start/Live In England 1970 (Hip-O Select; USA) At long last, Hip-o Select has reissued Love's last two studio albums complete, recorded with Blue Thumb, along with an album's worth of unreleased live tracks from three different 1970 concert dates. The set is 3 discs, disc one being the double album Out Here (68 min.), disc two is False Start (29 minutes) and three is titled Live in England 1970 (56 min.). These final two albums were released by a band whose members were constantly changing (with leader, singer and songwriter Arthur Lee as the only constant), and also a band that included no other members from the Love that recorded 1968's essential Forever Changes album. However, though he changed his band around and changed his sound considerably from orchestral folk-rock to a harder brand of psychedelic rock, Lee by no means quit producing worthwhile material after Forever Changes. This reissue is a welcome one, since Out Here has been out of print for quite a while (and thus very expensive and rare to find), False Start has been somewhat hard to track down, and this is the first time the 1970 live album has been released. Although this was a hit-and-miss period for Lee and Love, there's tons of great, rocking tracks in this collection, lots of Lee's inimitably dead-on lyrics, and I think it's worth owning for any major Love fan (who is probably primarily interested in the previously unreleased live material) or anyone who's been bewitched by the classic Forever Changes and wants to dig deeper into Love's later music. - Elliot Knapp

KLAUS SCHULZE & PETE NAMLOOK - Dark Side of the Moog - Vols. 1 (Made in Germany 1382; Germany) "Complex re-release of the most remarkable and worldwide sought after series The Dark Side Of The Moog by German electronic pioneers Klaus Schulze and Pete Namlook (aka Peter Kuhlmann) in three slip lid boxsets, each with 5 CDs, incl. bonus material and new linernotes. The first box contains Vol. 1 to Vol. 4 and the Best Of-Album The Evolution Of The Dark Side Of The Moog. Their relationship between Klaus and Pete and the exchange of ideas was unorthodox from the beginning of their co-operation, in that they rarely met personally. The most remarkable contacts they had were outside of their studios, for instance their concert of April 1999 at the Jazz Festival in Hamburg , which was released as an edited version on Dark Side Of The Moog, Vol.8 (will be released in the second Boxset) - the interplay and chemistry between them is clearly evident, and it becomes even clearer on the un-edited version of the concert (which will be released as bonus CS on the third boxset). The influence Namlook had on Klaus's music in the middle of the nineties should not be taken lightly, because although Klaus dearly loved those early-analogue elements from his own music, they had become, to an extent, lost. It was Pete who fortified him to go back to the analogue charm of his early albums and it was Pete who supported him in the modification of his analogue instruments, leading finally to the epoch-making Schulze album from 1996 - Are You Sequenced? And so a legendary series of recordings was born. Dark Side Of The Moog grew more or less unplanned to a sprawling, stately-sized series of eleven volumes recorded between 1994 and 2008, only ending with the early, tragic death of Pete on November 8th 2012."

SOURCE RECORDS [V.A. With ROBERT ASHLEY/DAVID BEHRMAN/ALVIN LUCIER et al] - Source: Music of the Avant Garde 1968-1971 Vols 1-6 (Pogus 21050; USA) Featuring works by Robert Ashley, David Behrman, Allan Bryant, Alvin Lucier, Larry Austin, Annea Lockwood and more. Pogus is extremely proud to reissue the recordings included in the seminal new music journal, Source: Music of the Avant Garde, Vols. 1-6, Issues 1-11, Source Records 1-6, 1967-1973. The original six ten-inch LP Source Records contained some of the most important experimental music of the nineteen-sixties to mid nineteen-seventies and they have now been reissued as a 3 CD set. Source ended publication in 1973, having published, since 1967, contemporary musical materials, scores, articles, interviews, photo essays and recordings over seven years, with up to 2000 subscribers to the semiannual journal: the subscribers avidly anticipated receiving two new and critically acclaimed issues each year during that period. Most of the original tape masters for the records, after over forty years, have vanished or have seriously deteriorated; hence, we have carefully transferred, noise-reduced, and crackle-removed all the actual LP record tracks to the digital medium, then mastered to the compact disc format for this reissue: the result is an authentic recreation of the original LP, characteristic sound. CD One - VOLS 1 and 2: Robert Ashley 'The Wolfman'; David Behrman 'Wave Train'; Larry Austin 'Accidents'; Allan Bryant 'Pitch Out' CD Two - VOLS 3 and 4 : Alvin Lucier 'I am sitting in a room'; Arthur Woodbury 'Velox'; Mark Riener 'Phlegethon'; Larry Austin 'Caritas; Stanley Lunetta 'moosack machine' CD Three - VOLS 5 and 6: Lowell Cross 'Video II (B)/(C)/(L)'; Arrigo Lora-Totino 'english phonemes'; Alvin Curran 'Magic Carpet'; Annea Lockwood 'Tiger Balm' "The enclosed booklet contains information on each of the twelve composers with notes about each of the pieces included in the box. I found much of this music to be extremely challenging and occasionally difficult to reckon with. Sitting at my computer at home and listening closely and patiently, I was greatly rewarded by the often fascinating and sometimes harrowing sounds. Larry Austin's "Accidents" is for electronically prepared piano & ring modulator with various manipulated visual projections involved. Although the piece is based on "accidents" (notes at the piano are depressed silently, the sounds occur only by accident), it does sound more deliberate or focused. Allan Bryant played unconventional guitar with Musica Elettronica Viva, legendary new music/noise/improv ensemble based in Rome in the sixties with Frederic Rzewski, Alvin Curran & Richard Teitlebaum. Mr. Bryant's piece "Pitch Out" is performed by four musicians playing an eight (mandolin) stringed instrument mounted on a board, played in surround sound. No doubt this music predates the multiple string weirdness of Glenn Branca, Rhys Chatham and Sonic Youth. The textures of the many rubbed and plucked strings is both fascinating and alien-sounding. Since all of these pieces were recorded between 1968 and 1971, electronic processing and synthesizers involved give this a somewhat ancient (dated) quality. Rather than limiting the sonic textures, it helped to focus the creativity in other ways. I found all of the pieces here to be interesting in one way or another, the explanations of the pieces to be informative but not always necessary to understanding the sounds. Some of the pieces were completely enchanting like Larry Austin's "Caritas," Stanley Lunetta's "moosack machine" and Alvin Curran's "Magic Carpet". The 'Source Records' collections show that challenging music from more than forty years ago still rings true today." - Bruce Lee Gallanter, Downtown Music Gallery

FATS WALLER & His RHYTHM - If You Got To Ask You Ain't Got It! - 1926-1943: Fats Sings And Plays Fats/Strictly Instrumental/Plays Tin Pan Alley (RCA/Bluebird 81125; USA) During his 21-year recording career, Thomas "Fats" Waller waxed so many hundreds of songs that only a dedicated few have heard them all even once, let alone often enough to understand the true nature of his legacy. While longtime collectors can attest to the awesome breadth and depth of Waller's massive discography, your average citizen needs and deserves a chance to investigate on a more modest level, which is what compilations are supposed to be for. Most Fats Waller samplers concentrate upon his highly developed sense of humor and his vital importance in the development of swing music; the best of them also highlight his pianistic prowess and -- if you're lucky -- his pioneering role as the first person to play jazz on the organ. Producer Orrin Keepnews has achieved what should be regarded as a major accomplishment in Waller studies both intensive and casual: an intelligently compiled three-CD set with superbly insightful liner notes by Dan Morgenstern, including a detailed biography, informative commentary on each of the 66 tracks, and more than 40 previously unpublished photographs from the Fats Waller archives. The conceptual framework of this compilation will help listeners to understand and feel the essence of Waller's music more clearly perhaps than ever before. Disc one presents Waller's interpretations of songs he wrote himself. Disc two, packed with (one) organ and (ten) piano solos as well as small-group and big-band swing, purports to be "strictly instrumental," even if Waller prefaces "Serenade for a Wealthy Widow" with a plea for "currency" and makes cheeky references to conspicuous consumption all throughout "Lounging at the Waldorf." Disc three, touching upon the best-known aspects of this artist's public persona, is entitled Fats Waller Sings and Plays Around with Tin Pan Alley. Given the sheer number of extant recordings that fit into that category, the producer made extraordinarily fine choices. Keepnews admits: "I inevitably have not included all of your Waller favorites. As a matter of fact, I haven't even had room to include all of mine!" It is clear that both Morgenstern and Keepnews drew upon entire lifetimes spent developing sincere love and respect for this great artist. "If You Got to Ask, You Ain't Got It!" gets its title from Waller's famous response to the question "What is swing?" -- listen through all three discs and you'll most certainly get it for real.
