Large IVO PERELMAN CD Sale!

Large IVO PERELMAN CD Sale List:

Over the past decade, Brazilian-born, Brooklyn-based saxist, Ivo Perelman, has produced some 80 (!) CD's for the Leo label, as well as a few for other labels: Burning Ambulance, Listen! Foundation and Tao Forms. I have heard most and reviewed perhaps 2/3's of all of these. Mr. Perelman selects from a handful of musicians (Matt Shipp, Nate Wooley & Mat Maneri) and varies each disc personnel-wise. I find that Ivo Perelman is a gifted improviser, plays consistently strong and sounds most inspired. Mr. Perelman recently cleaned out his basement and decided to have a big sale. Listed below are 35 titles! Most are single CD's at $10 (retail price is around $16-$17). There are a couple of double and triples as well.

Here's the deal, take any 5 CD's listed below and get the sixth one for free.

The double & triple count as one CD and can't be taken as the free one. I've included reviews & blurbs further below. It will take 1-2 weeks to get ahold of most these, just a few titles are currently in stock here.

IVO PERELMAN CD SALE - List with Reviews:

IVO PERELMAN / WILLIAM PARKER / GERALD CLEAVER - Art of the Improv Trio 4 (Leo 774; UK) The music we did and continue to do is always transcending itself unfolding in layers of sound, space and colors. We are actually painting with sound and enabling the concept of vision to live. Becoming a voice hearing and opening the floodgates of creativity. Once the gates are opened we discover they are eternal. They do not repeat themselves and it is no longer music it is the life of Ivo Perelman shared with the world like a window wide open looking out over a field of flowers called hope. The music that I have played with Ivo is beautiful. - William Parker, August 2016.

IVO PERELMAN / JOE MORRIS - Blue (Leo 734; UK) "It is a blue record because it has the feeling of the colour blue; the whole album is very intimate, and it has that blue feeling throughout. Much of the time it's a kind of introspection." - Ivo Perelman

IVO PERELMAN / MAT MANERI / JOE MORRIS / GERALD CLEAVER - Breaking Point (Leo 753; UK) Featuring Ivo Perelman on tenor sax, Mat Maneri on viola, Joe Morris on double bass and Gerald Cleaver on drums. Leo Records has released some 25 discs from saxist Ivo Perelman over the past five years. A number of duos, trios and the occasional quartet. Mr. Perelman usually draws from the same half dozen or so improvisers, three of which are here so he has developed creative bond with each. This is the second disc for this particular quartet. The first thing I noticed here was how well Mr. Perelman's tenor sax and Mr. Maneri's viola play together. Slowly, at first, bending notes around one another, creating criss-crossing currents, woven like a robust, cosmic tapestry. Building into a controlled frenzy and eventually burning together. The Morris/Cleaver rhythm team also seems perfect for the job, rising and falling together, providing an organic cushion. There are some amazing moments when it is hard to tell the sax and viola apart as they erupt tightly together, exchanging intense fractured lines. On “Dance Matters”, Perelman calms down, the rest of the quartet also playing those eerie ghost-like shadow sounds. Things speed up to near breaking point on “Catch 22”, the quartet exploding together in a most glorious way. Gerald Cleaver is at his best here, matching and navigating the rhythm currents in a masterful way. “The Haunted French Horn” is most cerebral, everything moving is slow waves, with some amazing playing from often under-recognized Mat Maneri at the center of the distant storm. This disc consistently strong, spirited and filled with surprising twists and turns. This is the first time in years that Leo has released just one Ivo Perelman disc at the same time, making it much easier to choose from the ongoing deluge. This is the one! - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

IVO PERELMAN / MATTHEW SHIPP - Complementary Colors (Leo 744; UK) Featuring Ivo Perelman on tenor sax and Matthew Shipp on piano. In less than twenty years, the Leo label has released more than 30 CDs from Brazilian-born, New York-based saxist Ivo Perelman. Often released in groups of three discs at a time and usually of duos, trios and the occasional quartet. In recent years, Mr. Perelman's most constant collaborator has become the great pianist Matthew Shipp. These two musicians have obviously developed a bond which seems to get stronger on each release. This is their fourth duo disc although they have recorded together with other collaborators over more than a dozen other discs. Each of the ten pieces here is named after a different color or two. The first few pieces start off quietly, slowly building as they go, from a dream-world to more restless turbulence, evolving in a most organic way. By the third track, the two pick up the tempo, crisscrossing ideas and blending into a a connected stream. There is a constant dialogue going on here, an interweaving of ideas, well-balanced and without the near to push too far out. The often relaxed nature of this session makes for some wonderful and tasty listening. Perfect for a day when the sun is shining and the clouds are not too gray. Superb. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

IVO PERELMAN / MATTHEW SHIPP / WILLIAM PARKER / BOBBY KAPP - Heptagon (Leo 807; UK) What does concept of "lyricism" have to do with spontaneously created music or free jazz? — No notated composition, no predetermined structure, no agreements on tempo, no solo order. The answers are on Heptagon. The instigator here is a new drummer Bobby Kapp who played on Gato Barbieri's debut album in 1967. Ivo says: "He's very sensitive to time and space. He is dancing at the drum kit... I feel like playing with giants here."

IVO PERELMAN / MATTHEW SHIPP / WILLIAM PARKER / BOBBY KAPP - Ineffable Joy (ESP-Disk; USA) “Prolific tenor saxophonist Ivo Perelman wanted to be on ESP, because ESP's 1967 Gato Barbieri album In Search of the Mystery was an important record for Perelman, both being South American tenorists of an avant bent. So it is no coincidence that the drummer on In Search of the Mystery, Bobby Kapp (who's also on Noah Howard's second ESP-Disk', At Judson Hall (1968)), mans the kit for the present album. For that matter, the bassist, William Parker, made his recorded debut on ESP as well, playing on Frank Lowe's Black Beings (1973). And Perelman has a twenty-three-year/thirty-three-and-counting-albums collaboration with pianist Matthew Shipp, who's been associated with ESP since 2015. Kapp and Shipp are on Perelman's 2017 Leo album Tarvos, Parker and Shipp have made multiple albums with Perelman, and this is even the second time out for this quartet, after 2017's Heptagon (Leo). Somehow, though, their interplay remains fresh. Of course each player has particular gestures and general textures that recur from time to time, but like a kaleidoscope, each turn finds familiar elements recombinating into new patterns. Parker, Perelman, and Shipp frequently interweave spontaneous melodies of dazzling complexity. The free-bop of the rhythm section introduction to "Jubilation" is an unexpected delight. Kapp's skittering accents throughout are a lesson in setting a pulse without being obvious about it, with "Bliss" being a prime example. "Exuberance" crowns the album in particularly ecstatic fashion, the four players' unique and distinctive styles coming together in an exultant expression of creative freedom that's communicative and accessible. (from the liner notes)”

IVO PERELMAN / RUDI MAHALL - Kindred Spirits (Leo 840/841; UK) Featuring Ivo Perelman on tenor sax and Rudi Mahall on bass clarinet. Brazilian-born, Brooklyn-based saxist, Ivo Perelman, has been on a never-ending quest to record as many improv sessions as is possible over the past decade or so with some thirty discs now released by the Leo label. Often these sessions are released in groups of 5-7 CD's. Over the last year, Mr. Perelman, has decided to do something different, so his last Leo release is a triple CD set (duos with Matt Shipp) and now two CD's have been released and both are duos with great bass clarinetists: Jason Stein from Chicago and Rudi Mahall from Germany. Mr. Mahall is one of the few reeds players who works exclusively with the bass clarinet. He has become very visible over the past decade, working with Alex von Schlippenbach, Aki Takase and an ongoing band called Die Enttaeuschung. What's interesting about this session is that neither of these two reedman had played together before and Mr. Mahall was just in town for two days before returning to Germany. From the first piece, both of these musicians are digging in and exchanging ideas quickly, many fragments tightly woven… The pace (from slow to quick) and interaction is most often astonishing as both men toss off layers of connected lines. Both of these men are well-versed in extended techniques & multiphonics, hence they are continually testing one another with a wide variety of unique sounds. There is an ongoing spirit of adventure as these two work hard at combining their talents. Outstanding! - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

IVO PERELMAN / MATTHEW SHIPP / JEFF COSGROVE - Live in Baltimore (Leo Records 806; UK) Live In Baltimore constitutes one of the very few in-concert recordings in Perelman's huge catalog. Most of Ivo's CDs have been recorded in the studio. This set took place at An Die Musik, a small performance space for jazz, world-music, and classical concerts in an historic Baltimore townhouse. It has an excellent piano and has 75 armchairs for listeners - "velvet armchairs," Perelman points out. "And it was a Sunday afternoon. It was like playing in grandma's living room." And it was with a new drummer Jeff Cosgrove.

IVO PERELMAN / MATTHEW SHIPP - Live in Brussels (Leo 804/805; UK) This concert is a tour de force apart from their wonderful studio albums. It expresses the extraordinary generosity, simplicity, and complicity between these two musicians. The inventive continuity of their travels, over the course of ninety minutes, is the fruit of a rare and unusual capacity to improvise the content of their lives on the spot. — Jean-Michel Van Shouwburg

IVO PERELMAN / NATE WOOLEY / BRANDON LOPEZ / GERALD CLEAVER - Octagon (Leo 810; UK) This quartet features a new visitor to Planet Ivo, bassist Brandon Lopez; his work illuminates the ensemble playing from within, and his spotlit solo in part 7 bristles with the lithe muscularity that animates Wooley's own quartet. Ivo says: "I wanted this album to be the classic tenor-trumpet quartet, and I was happy to have used Brandon, because he gives us even more fire, more stimulus. He gives a very special identity to this CD."

IVO PERELMAN / MATTHEW SHIPP - Oneness (Leo 823; UK) "Triple CD deluxe edition represents five days of recordings in the studio. The front cover of this magnificent box depicts the Ouroboros, the serpent or snake eating its own tail. This image exists in many cultures throughout human history where it has come to represent unity, as in the meeting of two minds. Perelman and Shipp went to the studio for five days in a row with the idea to record and then to choose the best takes to make one CD. But when they listened to the playback they could not choose the best pieces. That's why they have decided to release this triple CD with the title 'Oneness'."

IVO PERELMAN / MATTHEW SHIPP / NATE WOOLEY - Philosopher's Stone (Leo 809; UK) With this recording Ivo Perelman introduces a new member into his circle, the great trumpeter Nate Wooley. The original working title of this album was Alchemy. The revised title Philosopher's Stone refers to the mythic material sought by alchemists of the Middle Ages, who fervently believed that it could turn common metals into silver or gold — and, not incidentally, confer immortality. Here, the materials are anything but common. But the music — thanks to the science of recording, and the magic of these empathetic improvisers — will remain long after the moments in which it first took shape. — NEIL TESSER

IVO PERELMAN / MATTHEW SHIPP / JOE HERTENSTEIN - Scalene (Leo 808; UK) First It was Jeff Cosgrove, then Bobby Kapp, and now it is yet another new drummer Joe Hertenstein. Says Ivo: "I'm opening up to every musician on earth. It's not that I have exhausted the musical potential with my favorite gang. But it's time to expand — and this will reflect a growth within my gang. If you socialize and talk with other people, it's good for your old friends too." With new friends like Hertenstein, no one's complaining.

IVO PERELMAN / JASON STEIN - Spiritual Prayers (Leo 842; UK) Featuring Ivo Perelman on tenor sax and Jason Stein on bass clarinet. Perelman, has decided to do something different, so his last Leo release is a triple CD set (duos with Matt Shipp) and now two CD's have been released and both are duos with great bass clarinetists. This disc features a duo with Chicago bass clarinet hero, Jason Stein. Like the other current Perelman CD, both Mr. Stein and Rudi Mahall both play bass clarinets exclusively. No doubt you recognize the name Jason Stein from his extensive catalogue with Hearts & Minds, Ken Vandermark or dozen discs as a leader. Hi most recent disc is a quartet with Keefe Jackson, Josh Abrams and Tom Rainey, is a particular fave of the DMG staff. The duo of Ivo Perelman and Jason Stein seem to be extremely well-matched. From the beginning, they take off and start spinning several layers of lines together, creating a cosmic tapestry of intricate weaving. The title of this disc, 'Spiritual Players', come from the an observation that both Mr. Perelman and Mr. Stein, come from Jewish backgrounds but are not really involved with any religious study. Both did feel an inexplicable bond which does seem to emanate from their collective improvising. This disc starts off slowly and quietly, a reflective sense of calm at the center. The intensity builds as these two get to know each other, their lines erupting and creating a connected web of activity. Aside from recognizing the distinctive dry tone of a bass clarinet, it is often hard to tell these two apart as they explore similar tonalities and timbres. When things speed up at times, criss-crossing lines have away of evoking restless spirits set free and soaring together. There is great section when both reedmen are bending & twisting their notes together and sound like two agitated birds having a fascinating discussion. Although the central vibe is one of calmness, these two master musicians continually dig deep into their vast vocabulary and keep pushing each, interacting and connecting on different levels. This disc is nearly an hour long and I found myself at the edge of my seat for the entire length. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

IVO PERELMAN / MAT MANERI / MARK FELDMAN / JASON HWANG - Strings 1 (Leo 850; UK) Featuring Ivo Perelman on tenor sax, Mat Maneri on viola, Mark Feldman on violin and Jason Hwang on violin. After some 30 discs release on this, the Leo label over perhaps a half dozen years, it looks as if Mr. Perelman might be slowing down a bit with just four newer CDs in the past year, aside from one 3 CD set (duos w/ Matt Shipp). Aside from an occasion appearance from the elusive Mat Maneri, it has been a long while since Mr. Perelman has worked with a string quartet or trio. What I find most interesting is that although all three of these string players are gifted improvisers, they work in different circles, and haven't played together until now. Mark Feldman is known for playing the challenging written music of John Zorn in the Masada String Trio or duo with Sylvie Courvoisier. Mat Maneri does mostly improvised sessions for a wide variety of players, always challenging his cohorts with his idiosyncratic microtonal explorers. Jason Hwang is somewhere in the middle working written and highly improvised music both. While Mr. Feldman keeps his rigid intonation central to the proceedings, Mr. Maneri keeps pushing things further out. This keeps Mr. Perelman balancing or dancing between those two extremes. It seems obvious that Mr. Perelman and Mr. Maneri have worked together previously since they seem to bend notes in similar ways at times, occasionally exchanging lines quickly and finishing each others sentences. This does sound like a working quartet since off four voices fit together so well. Things calm down to a slow, somber simmer on “Part 3”, before they reaching for those bent-note shrieks again. Things solidify into high-end improv later on as all four players have gotten use to each other's sound and have found ways to exchange ideas quickly, becoming one collective, ever-evolving voice. A wonderful of high-end improv at its best! - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

IVO PERELMAN / MAT MANERI / HANK ROBERTS / NED ROTHENBERG - Strings 2 (Leo 851; UK) Featuring Ivo Perelman on tenor sax, Mat Maneri on viola, Hank Roberts on cello and Ned Rothenberg on bass clarinet. After some 30 discs release on this, the Leo label over perhaps a half dozen years, it looks as if Mr. Perelman might be slowing down a bit with just four newer CDs in the past year, aside from one 3 CD set (duos w/ Matt Shipp). While Mat Maneri has worked with Mr. Perelman on several previous discs, this is the first time that Mr. Perelman has worked with either Ned Rothenberg (bass clarinet here) or Hank Roberts (cello). As far as I can tell, this is the first time that Hank Roberts and Ned Rothenberg have worked together as well. This is indeed an unique and unlikely line-up. All of the pieces here are mostly trios with Mr. Perelman, Maneri and Rothenberg or Hank Roberts. All four musicians play together on just two pieces, the first and the last ones. It sounds as if Mr. Perelman and Mr. Maneri have been working together previous since they have a way of bending their notes in similar ways. After moving upstate for some two decades, Mr. Roberts is now back living in Brooklyn and playing locally in various groupings. He has remained a marvelous improviser through his entire career. He is also a strong composer and bandleader, although his last releases as a bandleader are from many years back. It is great to hear him stretch out at length here. While Mr. Maneri, an ever-challenging microtonal improviser, goes further out, Mr. Roberts lays down a solid, low-end foundation, bringing things a bit more inside. I like the way these folks work together, taking their time, twisting their notes intricately around one another, an elastic sense of shared bent notes flowing together. At times Perelman and Maneri push each other into more turbulent waters, the intensity building to a boil. Mr. Roberts always finds space for himself to fit in, adding some low-end harmonies or counterbalance to the fireworks above. If you make your way through the entire disc, you will be richly rewarded with the final long piece for the entire quartet, which is quite extraordinary, all stops are pulled, the intensity and exchange of ideas brought to a higher level. - Bruce Lee Gallanter at DMG

IVO PERELMAN / MAT MANERI / TANYA KALMANOVITCH - Villa Lobos Suite (Leo 742; UK)Featuring Ivo Perelman on tenor sax, Mat Maneri on viola and Tanya Kalmanovitch on viola. Although the title of this disc is called the “Villa Lobos Suite”, the trio do not play any themes by this influential Brazilian composer. In the liner notes, Mr. Perelman, who is also from Brazil, claims to have been influenced by composing of his countryman, who traveled around Brazil, collecting songs as inspiration. Although Mr. Perelman and Mr. Maneri have been playing together for many years, this is their third disc together. This is their first encounter with Brooklyn-based violist Tanya Kalmanovitch, who you might recognize from a fine duo disc out with Myra Melford. Although the instrumentation here is certainly unique (two violas & tenor sax), the combination is extraordinary. Both viola players and Perelman's tenor sound great together, it is often hard to tell who is who, since all three musicians play in a similar range. Each of these three have a vocal-like sound, kind of like ghosts conversing. Notes are often bent carefully in similar ways, so certain phrases or lines blend into a tight interconnected flow. The overall sound here is often mesmerizing, the more I listen, the more the spirits sound connected to each other. Marvelous! - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG
