Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! To all of the lovely folks who have written to DMG or greeted me in person with your birthday salutations. My party last Sunday was cosy and a blast for me and those in attendance. I did get a bit too buzzed. Thanks again to any of you who've written in to let me know how much my song lyric intros mean to you. I do love to inspire anyone who does listen to some of the same music that I also cherish and savor.
The long awaited KEITH TIPPETT books & 2 CD Set were shipped 3 weeks ago, arrived in NYC and then were allegedly dropped off at the store after we closed for the day. Not true! Thanks to Fedex, our box was sent back to the UK for no reason that we know of. We are trying to work things out with Jazz in Britain to get these books back but we have to be patient until they do arrive. I guarantee that we will get them but I am unsure as to when. Stay tuned. - BLG at DMG

THIS WEEK'S SONIC GEMS BEGIN WITH:
MILES OKAZAKI with CAROLINE DAVIS / ANNA WEBBER / JON IRABAGON / JACOB GARCHIK / KALIA VANDEVER / MATT MITCHELL / CHRIS TORDINI / HANNAH MARKS / DAN WEISS - Boomtown (Pi Recordings PI 113; USA) Featuring Miles Okazaki on guitars & compositions, Caroline Davis on alto sax, Anna Webber on tenor sax & flute, Jon Irabagon on tenor & soprano saxes, Jacob Garchik & Kalia Vandever on trombones, Matt Mitchell on piano, Chris Tordini & Hannah Marks on basses and Dan Weiss on drums. Downtown guitarist and composer, Miles Okazaki, keeps busy playing in a variety of projects with Patricia Brennan, Henry Threadgill, Jacob Garchik and Dan Weiss, as well as in several of his own projects. His own ensemble has grown larger than since their last record ('Miniature America' in 2024. This, his current ensemble, has ten musicians, most of whom Okzaki has worked with before and most of whom are bandleader/composers on their own.
"Magic Hour" opens with some restrained acoustic guitar and a layer of drones from the horns. It is a solemn, haunting opening. "Boomtown Girl" has several layers of horns over the sprawling percussion and exquisite acoustic guitar. Things slow down and become more cerebral on "Thermopolis", keeping an M-Base-like pattern revolving throughout, building and increasing in tempo and force as it erupts to an intense conclusion, before it fades freely away. Trombonist Kalia Vandever is featured with a luscious open intro solo on "Diamondville". "Hole in the Wall" simmers nicely in slow motion as several horns interweave in a fine, laid-back fashion. The piece slowly increases in tempo as Ms. Webber on tenor and Okazaki on guitar trade quick sides while the rest of the ensemble swirls in tight orbits around them. For "Bighorn", Okazaki wrote some lush, haunting melodies for all of the horns while the guitar plays a series of dreamy chords underneath. After playing some complex M-Base music with Steve Coleman for a number of years, Mr. Okazaki's own writing sounded like he was still playing those Coleman-like circular patterns. This disc is quite different from Okazaki's previous ones as it is often more relaxed with complex solos slowed down and more thought out. "Ten Sleep" starts with Mr. Mitchell playing a lovely, exquisite piano intro and remains calm, haunting with some lush harmonies. "Grand Prismatic" is a short, majestic sounding interlude before "Devils Tower". This piece has rich harmonies for all with a fine solo from Caroline Davis on alto sax and Okazaki on guitar (outstanding!). The piece becomes more dense and turbulent throughout with waves crashing upon waves as the tide keeps rising. Over the past year or so, Miles Okazaki has kept quite busy, gig-wise. He has the entire Thelonious Monk catalogue on solo guitar numerous times and has led jam sessions at Close-Up. Okazaki takes his time with each of his annual releases so that each one is special. This one certainly is. The poise and restraint here is consistently marvelous so.... - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

HENRY KAISER - Gateway to Strangeness - Solo Guitar (Metalanguage ML-2026-1; USA) Featuring Henry Kaiser on solo guitar, harp guitar and 7 guitars on a table. Tracks alternate between acoustic and electric guitars. Former Bay Area-based guitarist, Henry Kaiser, keeps himself busy collaborating with musicians both locally and through the internet, often recording with other guitarists from all over. Mr. Kaiser also records the occasional solo effort, often switching between guitars, devices and styles. This is Kaiser's first solo guitar effort in a couple of years. It begins with "Archaemandryx" for acoustic guitar, a 12-string perhaps? The guitar is superbly recorded and sounds rather orchestral in its sweeping sound. "Chankozar" sounds like a semi-acoustic guitar and with what sounds like a whistle or eerie vocal sounds sailing in. Kaiser is a master of effects and here he adds a few sly, eerie, backwards sounding sustained guitar on top of his dreamy acoustic chords. Each piece here evokes a different sonic place in our imaginations. Like many of you who read this newsletter, Mr. Kaiser has big ears and has listened to quite a bit of different guitarists and their unique styles. Some pieces seem to balance different extremes: Derek Bailey-like fractured chords with Ralph Towner-like acoustic, orchestra waves. Kaiser also appears to enjoy letting certain chords or groups of notes hang in the air so we can savor them until they fade away. Like a number of my favorite all-around musicians, Kaiser has a way of creating a series of stories in each piece. "Ghh'Lekthwa" ends with several repeating chords which evoke a folk/blues theme which fades out leaving our imaginations a chance to complete the direction it was going. On "Ixax", Kaiser loops a mystical low-end drone and adds some shimmering, liquid sounds on top. Is Mr. Kaiser tapping into our collective dreams or is he creating another dreamworld for us to sail within? On rare occasions Kaiser will use a slide just to bend notes slightly which has a way of keeping us listeners off balance. For "Koryphon", Kaiser speeds up the pace, adding watery effects which are most hypnotic and rather kaleidoscopic in sound. His blend of acoustic & electric guitar sounds is often seamless and breathtaking. Like most CD's by Henry Kaiser, this one is nearly 76 minutes long with a lovely cover painting by Kaiser's partner Brandy Gale. There is quite a bit of great, spirited and inventive music here so you should dive right in. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

CAMILA NEBBIA / CHRIS CORSANO - Six or Seven Ways Towards Becoming Undone (Relative Pitch RPR 1244; USA) Featuring Camila Nebbia on tenor sax and Chris Corsano on drums. Recorded in Berlin in 2025. I've been a big fan of Argentinian born, Berlin based saxist Camila Nebbia for the past few years and have always dug her half dozen or so in-store sets here at DMG. For this session, Ms Nebbia worked with American drummer Chris Corsano, a unique and favorite percussionist of many serious listeners. This is a serious combination of Creative talents. Commencing with “Shattered Thing”, the duo take off for Free/Jazz Spirit/Fire Music before calming down a bit and then building back up. Ms. Nebbia is a fierce free player, often pushing the boundaries freer and more intensely. Mr. Corsano often has a way of opening things up by varying his dynamics from intense to more subtle sections. The two sounds well-connected throughout. Mr. Corsano has a distinctive way of matching the playing of whichever musicians he is playing with. Corsano has worked with quite a number of strong saxists: Rodrigo Amado, John Butcher, Paul Dunmall, John Flaherty, Evan Parker & Joe McPhee. When Ms. Nebbia calms down, Corsano does a good job of matching her approach. Things quiet down for "A Paper Cut in Smoke", while Nebbia slowly twists her sax notes inside-out, Corsano creates a slow motion simmering sound underneath. The piece continues to build quicker and more intensely as it evolves. Erupting full on in the last section. Even more stripped down and eerie is "Unadorned/Never Better", Mostly high-end sax smears with suspense-filled rubbed cymbals. This a truly simpatico duo. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG
GREG KELLEY / YOONA KIM * - Distractions for Trumpet and Ajaeng (Relative Pitch RPR 1280; USA) Featuring Greg Kelley on trumpet and Yoona Kim on ajaeng. Between the late 1990's and for around a decade, there were several music styles/developments which occurred in different places yet had a similar approach. I am referring to terms like lower case, onkyo, minimal and labels Erstwhile and Wandelweiser. Trumpeter Greg Kelley was an integral part of this scene and was a member of BSC (Boston Sound Collective) along with Bhob Rainey. I hadn't heard much from either of these two musicians in recent times. Yoona Kim plays an ajaeng which is a Korean string instrument, a wide zither with strings of twisted silk. When this CD begins, it is hard to tell who is doing what. The ajaeng is being bowed while Mr. Kelley is using a piece of thin metal as a mute. There are some deep and disorienting drones going on, strings and raspy tones from the trumpet being stretched out. Kelley plays soft toots, breath-like radiator hissings, The series of bent tones works well together although I get a sense that time is being stretched out. Ms. Kim's ajaeng is closely mic'd and sounds larger than life, rubbing the strings intensely at times. Mr. Kelley is a master of strange noises from his trusty trumpet. Kelley also sounds like he is using a variety of mutes, his hands or other ways to manipulate his sound. I found this duo and this disc to be astonishing at times and somewhat disturbing at times as well. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

PETER KUHN With DAVE SEWELSON / DAN CLUCAS / SCOTT WALTON / ALEX CLINE - Dependent Origination (FMR 478; USA) Featuring Peter Kuhn on B-flat & bass clarinets & tenor sax, Dave Sewelson on bari & sopranino saxes, Dan Clucas on cornet, Scott Walton on bass and Alex Cline on drums & percussion. Recorded live at Open Gate Theatre, Eagle Rock, CA in November of 2016. Everyone digs a great comeback story, so I was more than pleased to see the return of former Downtown saxist Peter Kuhn after some thirty years in 2015. Since then, Mr. Kuhn, who currently lives in San Diego, we've seen the reissue of his early record, "No Coming, No Going' plus a current trio, both on No Business, plus a couple of newer discs from pfMentum and Abray. FMR has just released two more newer discs, both of which are spirited, free/jazz gems. The best of the batch was recorded in L.A. with Kuhn's old Downtown cohort, Dave Sewelson, plus a trio of LA's best: Dan Clucas on cornet, Scott Walton on bass and Alex Cline on drums & percussion. No doubt you know Nels' brother Alex, one of the best drummers/composers to emerge from LA in decades. Both Mr. Clucas and Mr. Walton are also important parts of that scene with several discs on labels: pfMentum and Circumvention. Mr. Kuhn, who is now a Buddhist minister, likes to begin his sets with the ringing of a meditation bowl so this is how this disc begins, solemn at first. The warm sound of the three horns (bass clarinet, bari sax & cornet) blend together, creating a spiritual cushion, the rhythm team slowly entering and whipping up a storm. The ever-amazing Alex Cline is at the center of the storm while, connecting with Mr. Sewelson's bari sax and pushing him higher, the bass revving up from below, the three sailing together tightly as one force. Eventually the rhythm team lays out while the three horns play in tight circles, weaving in and out, the spirits slowly ascending higher and higher. The entire disc flows in a most organic way with occasional inspired solos building the different sections. Considering that this was probably the first time all three horns played together, the interplay is consistently strong. This isn't your average free, fire-music session as things are much more balanced, calm at times and consistently well-connected. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

PETER KUHN TRIO With KYLE MOTL / NATHAN HUBBARD - Intention (FMR 467; UK) Featuring Peter Kuhn on clarinet & bass clarinet, Kyle Motl on contrabass and Nathan Hubbard on drums. This is a studio session from March of 2017. Early Downtown reeds wiz, Peter Kuhn, is back and slowly becoming more prolific since his return to playing in 2015. After nearly three decades off the scene, Mr. Kuhn, who currently lives in San Diego, had two archival discs released on No Business and then three newer offerings on pfMentum, Abray and No Business. FMR just released two more and both are great! This is the second disc from the Peter Kuhn Trio whose members include Kyle Motl on bass (once played a bass duo here at DMG) and Nathan Hubbard (from Cosmologic & with several of his own discs as a leader) on drums. For this session, Mr. Kuhn plays clarinets only and it was recorded in a studio. Bassist Motl kicks things off by quickly strumming and plucking the strings while the clarinet and drums weave their way in. This is an exciting, intense and unstoppable free/jazz trio with a clarinet up front. Playful, cerebral, spiritual, organically unfolding, from ancient to modern The dry, wooden tone of the clarinet seems to reach back to there eras, from Dixieland and Swing onwards, to bebop and beyond. For my ongoing list of "100 Clarinet Pioneers of the 20th Century', Peter Kuhn is an obvious contender. A solid, expansive and infinitely expressive effort. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

RAPOON / MATT HOWARTH - She Dances With Fred (Soleilmoon Recordings SOL 198CD; USA) "Robin Storey, recording as Rapoon since 1992, has more than one hundred albums in his discography. His music pulls inspiration from Eastern traditions, merging rhythms, electronics, samples and instruments into captivating ambient soundtracks that defy easy categorization. Asked about this project, Robin says 'I have long been interested in comic book art and when Matt contacted me about a collaboration I was immediately interested. He sent me some frames and I was blown away by the artwork. I found that adding a musical score to the drawings and the story outline came very naturally as I identified very much with the character and the situation. It was at once humorous and enchanting. I hope I have done the artwork justice.' Matt Howarth has made his name with his comic books and graphic novels over a career stretching back to the mid-1970's. Many of his works have a science fiction theme, but electronic and alternative music has always inspired him, leading him to projects with countless musicians. Soleilmoon is pleased to be releasing this captivating cross-disciplinary cooperative project by two of the label's favorite artists."
