Both of us know
How hard it is to love
And let it go
Both of us know
How hard it is to go on living that way
When so few understand what it means
To fall in love

And so few know how hard it is to live without it
I must have been blind
I must have been blind
Lord, I must have been blind

To hold something real
And not believe it
To live in her life
And never trustin'

To give all you know and never feel it
To hold back each day
Until it dies away

During the summer of 1968, I had befriended a guy named Randy C, a year or two older than me at Ashbrook swim club in Woodbridge, NJ. I was friendly with his sister, Marla, who was in my Hebrew school class. We were both big music fans, talking passionately about the many 60's bands that we dug. We ended up doing a trade and I got two albums from him: Tim Buckley's 'Goodbye and Hello' and the Paupers' Magic People' album. After playing them both several times, I became infatuated with both. The Paupers were a great psych band from Toronto who allegedly blew the original Jefferson Airplane off the stage when they opened for them at the Bitter End. I knew very little about Tim Buckley when I got that LP except for hearing one song called "Song for Janey" on FM radio from his first album, a great pop song. But 'Goodbye and Hello' was something else. Although Tim Buckley was often considered to be a folk singer, that record went way beyond folk and into some more psychedelic and expansive areas. It brilliant lyrically, musically and production wise. If you never heard it, I urge you to check it out. The above song, "I Must've Been Blind" comes from 'Blue Afternoon' and this is considered to be Buckley's jazz album of sorts. It is more laid back, Buckley's voice is immensely stirring as are all of the songs. I find this song to be utterly sad, even more it captures a certain feeling about Love that many of us can understand but can't be put easily into words. I recall, Eugene Chadbourne with camper Van Beethoven covering this and several other Tim Buckley songs at the Old Knit in the 1990's. They did a good job. If you haven't hear any/much Tim Buckley start with 'Blue Afternoon'. I also dig 'Happy Sad', 'Star Sailor' and 'Lorca'. "Oh Lord, I must've been blind..." - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

NEW RELEASES FOR THIS WEEK:

JOHN ZORN // JULIAN LAGE / GYAN RILEY - Seven Sonnets (Tzadik 9330; USA) Originally brought together in September 2015 to perform the Zorn “Bagatelles,” Julian Lage and Gyan Riley have become two of Zorn’s most trusted and soulful musical collaborators, having recorded over a dozen CDs of his compositions for acoustic guitars both in duo and in trio with Bill Frisell. “Seven Sonnets” is their sixth CD together as a duo and the music is a lovely series of compositions referencing early music, minimalism, contemporary classical, soundtracks, folk, jazz, and more. Two of the world’s most accomplished and acclaimed guitar virtuosos perform a beautiful book of original music inspired by the Sonnets of William Shakespeare. “Volume One” of Zorn’s musical Sonnets contains some of his loveliest and most intimate creations.

SAM MORRISON with BILL LASWELL / T. XIQUES - Cosmic Trip (MOD Reloaded 00113; USA) Featuring Sam Morrison on soprano sax, alto flute, synth, log drums $ electronics, Bill Laswell on EFX & mix translation and T. Xiques on agogo bell. Due to Bill Laswell's ongoing health problems, we've only seen a few releases come out on his own MODT Reloaded label: Dark Matter Halo (2021) and Nevaris (2023) being the last two physical CD's on that label. Although jazz saxist Sam Morrison first release dates back to 1977, 'Cosmic Trop' is only his fourth release in nearly 50 years. American percussionist T. Xiques is also another musician who I know little about although he has worked Savoy Brown (British blues rock band from the late 60's onwards) and Roswell Rudd (great trombonist who worked with Carla Bley, Archie Shepp & many others).
"High Blood Pressure" kicks things off with a fine, slamming, dub groove fronted by Mr. Morrison's sly harmonized soprano sax. Morrison's synth & drum samples and Mr. Laswell's dub-like EFX and haunting production show how this is music for the body to groove and our minds to be transported. On "Jailbreak", the groove sounds like drum n' bass sounds from the 1990's, something I haven't heard in a long while although it does sound fine here. Each piece has a different groove, beat or vibe. Hence a good deal of work has gone into creating this disc. It sounds like Morrison is using several older synths and samples from a previous era. Some might say that this music sounds dated or at least from an early era but I like the way the drum machine, samples and effects remain engaging (for our minds), as well as funky, bound to make nod our heads in time or even dance slowly at times. The beat/groove on "Big Rumble" and it sounds sped up much like drum n' bass from the early days. Although the groove pounds harder on "Lab Disaster", it is spacious, eerie effects which make this most hypnotic. Throughout this disc, I kept marveling at the varied layers of swirling soprano, mind-blowing samples and infectious grooves. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

ELLIOTT SHARP - Piano Forte (zOaR ZCD 207; USA) Composed and performed by Elliott Sharp on solo piano. "A return to the piano for this collection of compositions that focus more on the physics of multiple strings at high tension with a resonator and pedals to modulate dynamics. The title, Piano Forte, of course refers to the dynamics of soft and loud but also a nod to the predecessor of the modern piano, un cimbalo di cipresso di piano e forte invented in the late 18th century by Bartolomeo Cristofori of Padua, a noted builder of harpsichords. Later shortened to pianoforte and finally piano, this revolutionary instrument allowed control of volume and attack. MY own complex history with the piano begins with childhood lessons leading to my first gig ever, performing Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody Nr. 2 at the age of seven at Carnegie Recital Hall as part of a recital of the students of Joan Mayer, a strict and humorless pedagogue. Though I loved the music and the sound of the piano, I found the lessons and practice discipline quite disturbing and developed asthma that nearly killed me. After a hospital stay, the piano was no longer in my life until I found my way back to it in 1985 (as chronicled in my book IrRational Music and in the notes to the album K!L!A!V!) This latter record included my performance on piano of the composition Mapping, more sonic than pianistic. The piano began to play an important role in such compositions for orchestra as Calling and On Corlear's Hook as well as the solo piece Oligosono, written for the virtuoso Jenny Lin with a language based on physics, genetics, and the acoustics of resonance. These pieces were realized inspired by the poetics of physics and the tactility of sound." - Notes by E#
When Mr. Sharp handed me a copy of his new disc earlier today (5/11/26), I asked if he was performing on piano for his new disc. He said yes and he was originally a virtuoso pianist as a child but quickly quit (described above), moving onto clarinet and a series of guitars. I've known Mr. Sharp since 1980 and I've only seen & heard him play mostly guitar, other stringed things and a few invented instruments. But piano? Not yet. The disc opens with "Skymionic" in which Sharp is muted a few strings as he taps out a stark repeating riff, slowing down and adding some sparse punctuation with his right hand. Sharp seems to balancing different but related fragments with each hand, occasionally holding the foot pedal down to let certain notes or chords reverberate. The music seems to be more scientific or cerebral not very melodic. On "Exciton" the clanging piano shimmers in resonance while E# adds another, which grows more and less dense as it evolves. Sharp seems to playing what sounds like a science fiction or mystery theme on "Supercession", perhaps using his knuckles at times. It took me a bit to adjust to the playing here since Sharp often coaxes out effective sounds which balance between engaging and perplexing. Each piece evokes a different spirit. mood, vibe or unique sound. Even during the occasional sparse sections, Sharp often has a few different lines of phrases going on at the same time as they increase, decrease or rest between sections. This is the third solo piano effort that've reviewed in the past few weeks (along with Marta Sanchez & Yvonne Rogers) and this one doesn't quite sound like any other solo piano effort that I've. Unique. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

GEORGE with ANNA WEBBER / SARAH ROSSY / CHIQUITAMAGIC / JOHN HOLLENBECK - Looking for Consonance (Out of Your Head Records 044; USA) "Claudia Quintet’s founder, John Hollenbeck, a fierce, focused, and highly innovative drummer and composer who often seems a step ahead of jazz’s vanguard, returns with his second album from the ensemble George—named after George Floyd—Looking For Consonance. The electro-acoustic group features synth players and vocalists Sarah Rossy and Chiquita Magic, alongside the exceptional saxophonist and flutist Anna Webber.
Difficult to categorize, the music traverses a postmodern landscape shaped by elements of synth-pop, electronica, idiosyncratic rhythmic designs, and open improvisation. “Bounce” is a striking ride that lands somewhere between eerie prog-metal and hallucinatory rave textures. Synchronized vocal lines, Hollenbeck’s explosive rhythmic foundation, and Webber’s menacing multiphonics and driving melodic force converge before dissolving into an extended, sustained drone.
The mercurial “Lewis”—dedicated to trombonist George Lewis—embraces shifting meters, incorporating synth-pop-rock passages in five, nimble septuple meter dances, and other intricate rhythmic cycles where the flute takes a central role. In contrast, “Nassam Alayna-Lhawa”, a composition by the Lebanese Rahbani Brothers, offers a gentle, diasporic expression of peace, delivered with clarity and warmth through Rossy’s Arabic vocals.
The ensemble’s revolutionary spirit peaks with “Norma”, a dark experimental piece built on saxophone–voice unisons and assertive rhythmic accents, and “George and Dee”, where strands of alternative synth-pop, new wave, and electronica-inspired experimentation evoke the legacy of artists like Gary Numan and Kraftwerk.
Hollenbeck infuses the album with layered rhythmic complexity throughout. Check out his work on “Porter”, where he lays down treacherous, counterintuitive undercurrents while ethereal vocal chants stay afloat. “Johnson”—a tribute to George F. Johnson—radiates a buoyant, groove-oriented energy, offering a more accessible nu-jazz moment, while “Wayne Phase”—a nod to Wayne Shorter—explores shifting intensities and stylistic breadth with a deep understanding of the honoree’s musical language and eclecticism.
Richly detailed, Looking For Consonance, may prove challenging for casual listen. Still, the group’s fluid command of odd meters and genre-crossing expression ultimately feels organic, inviting listeners to yield to its intricate rhythmic and improvisational allure." - Filipe Freitas at JazzTrail

MARSHALL ALLEN / HELIOCENTRICS / KNOEL SCOTT / BILAL - Nuclear War (Strut 279LP; Germany) Later this month, on May 25 of this year (2026), longtime Sun Ra saxist Marshall Allen turns 102! Hard to believe that Mr. Allen has been a member of the Sun Ra Arkestra for almost 70 years and is still leading the legendary Arkestra as well as performing live and releasing his own solo efforts. The only other musician/composer who continued to perform and/or compose past the 100 mark is/was Elliott Carter. Aside from performing on each of the 200-300 Sun Ra records, Mr. Allen has long done the occasional sideman or leader dates. For this date Allen works with current Arkestra saxist Knoel Scott, a sinder named Bilal and a British-based collective known as the Heliocentrics. This band has been around for around 20 years and has collaborated with Kulatu Astake, Lloyd Miller and Melvin Van Peeples, a most eclectic bunch.
This is a 4 track 12" EP with all songs written by the late Sun Ra from different periods. The opening track is the title track, "Nuclear War", which was first released in the UK as a 12" in 1982 and later covered by Yo La Tengo (in 2002). The version here has a lush, cerebral groove, sassy vocals, honking saxes and a balafon-led groove. You gotta love those words: "It's a motherf*cker, talkin' about.. nuclear war, if they push that button, your ass gotta go!" "Where Pathways Meet" is from 'Lanquidity' (1978). It is another great hypnotic piece with an infectious groove and rip roaring horns. Who would've that Sun Ra's songs could be this Funky?!? "Angels and Demons at Play" comes from an album with the same name from 1967. I dig the arrangements which feature several layers of reeds and brass and multiple percussionists. Once again the hypnotic groove feels just right, space-age sonic medicine for us earthlings. The last piece is "Astro Black", title track from everyone fave Sun Ra album from 1973. Once the vibe and groove is/are mind-blowing, washing over us in spacious cosmic waves. Bilal sings in a most soulful way, not unlike the way June Tyson did on the original recording. This entire disc flows warmly and has a dream-like, subtle yet cosmic vibe as well. So take a trip with Marshall Allen and the Heliocentrics and kiss your tush goodbye. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

THE GREAT BIG USED LP SALE LIST: PROG, AVANT-JAZZ, CANTERBURY...

We just in this collection of mostly rare, original albums. It is indeed a big list and it has many rarities. These are records only, no CD's. Whatever is left will go on Discogs in the future. We generally ship media mail which is slow & less expensive. We want to insure packages of $100 so let us know if you do not want that expense. I've added some blurbs written by myself or borrowed but I didn't have time to add any more. There is also a box of a variety of rock albums which we will get to in the near future. If you came to the store, you can still look at that box. Happy hunting and do take care, Bruce at DMG

BANCO DEL MUTUO SOCCORSO - Garofano Rosso (Manticore MAL 2014; Italy) This album by Banco is rather unusual. Can you imagine Genesis with Peter Gabriel making an all-instrumental album or Supertramp with no vocals ? No ? Well, Banco did just that ! And did they succeed too ! In fact, this is a soundtrack for a film of the same name directed by Luigi Faccini. The music is fantastic, never boring. The use of a variety of instruments makes it really interesting. If all soundtrack music were like this... Get Banco's classic albums first then get this one. You won't regret it. If you don't like Francesco Di Giacomo's voice, then get it all the same ! This is typical Banco at its best. - Prog Archives

BUXINRUT ‎– "Radio Zone 16" (Real Legal Records – NR-14026; USA) Sincerely astonishing lo-fi Beefheartian avant rock workouts from a terminally obscure Delaware art damage unit whose closest musical touchstone would be the equally obscure American outfit Iltar (posted by Jim a while back). It's a sound that NWW-listers The Decayes and Bomis Prendin were also at varying times both teetering on the edge of, though those acts' relentless mutability insured that these sort of tendencies wouldn't be followed through to their illogical conclusion, as they are here.

GRAHAM COLLIER MUSIC With HARRY BECKETT/HENRY LOWTHER / MALCOM GRITTHS / ALAN WAKEMAN / et al - New Conditions (Mosaic GCM 761; UK) 1976's New Condition was indeed a radical departure for composer/bandleader Graham Collier. Instead of his sextet, the cast here is a 12-piece big band. Instead of a series of works, we have one long work in eight parts, with an introduction and a finale. The front line here is huge: three trumpets - yes, including Harry Beckett, one saxophone - thank god it's Alan Wakeman - and Malcolm Griffiths on trombone. The rhythm section is made up of Collier on bass, Ed Speight on guitar, John Webb on drums, and pianist Roger Dean. Collier has composed a mirror image of traditional jazz charts: this is all freely improvised, with certain scored "interruptions" for the ensemble.
LP $ 60

TOM CORA - Live At The Western Front (No Man's Land 8710; Switzerland) Amazing solo cello effort from the late Downtown pioneer and member of Curlew and Skeleton Crew.

LOL COXHILL / STEVE MILLER with PHIL MILLER / PIP PYLE / RICHARD SINCLAIR / LAURIE ALLEN - Miller/Coxhill (Caroline 1503; UK) "...a standout in the respective catalogs of both artists. Avant-garde saxophonist Lol Coxhill is best known for his work in free improvisation and British progressive rock and jazz. Steven Miller's work was more inclined toward structured electric jazz and fusion as a member of progressive rock unit Caravan X the resulting session was a highly experimental take on jazz fusion...as groovy as late Soft Machine, Caravan and Hatfield and the North's work from this period. A fairly essential recording from the Canterbury axis of early '70s British progressive rock." - All Music Guide

DEBILE MENTHOL ‎– Battre Campagne (RecRec 06; Switzerland) In the early 1980's, the Swiss band Debile Menthol's combination of complex progressive music combined with a bit of quirky but fun vocals was a fresh and welcome thing. In addition, L'Ensemble Raye, Nimal and other great prog bands can trace their lineage back to Debile Menthol. Debile Menthol had a somewhat lighter version of that beloved Rock-in-Opposition sound, which gave them a unique charm.

SUSSAN DEYHIM /RICHARD HOROWITZ - Desert Equations: Azax Attra (Crammed/Made To Measure 8; Belgium) Electro-Persian excursion by ethno-techno duo consisting of Iranian vocalist Sussan Deyhim and US electronic music composer Richard Horowitz. A groundbreaking album, dominated by Sussan Deyhim's sublime voice surging from behind virtual dunes and electronic oases, which prompted writer Paul Bowles to wonder: "Was this composed under the influence of Majoun ?"... and which convinced filmmaker Bernardo Bertolucci to entrust most of the soundtrack music for his "Sheltering Sky" movie to Richard Horowitz

ENSEMBLE EX IMPROVISO ‎– Musique En Tête (Recommended Music RM05; Germany) An avant-garde performance ensemble, who specialised in live improvisation, as well as recitals of contemporary composition. Although their LP release includes a Karlheinz Stockhausen work in their repertoire, Ensemble Ex Improviso are generally much closer related in style to the industrial movement of acts like P16.D4, and the more abstract work of Markus Schmickler and Asmus Tietchens. And, incidentally two members: Klaus Hinrich Stahmer and Christoph Wünsch are both also accomplished avant-gardists in their own right.

MAFFY FALAY / SEVDA with OKAY TEMIZ / BERNT ROSENGREN / OVE GUSTAVSSON / et al - s/t (Caprice RIKS LP 31; Sweden) Maffy Falay / Sevda moves through compact dance forms and longer cyclical pieces with a strong pull toward asymmetrical rhythm. “Taksim” opens in a subdued solo voice, and “Hicaz Dolap” lifts the energy with darbuka and a higher violin line marked by brief pauses. “Tamzara” holds a long 9/4 contour across nearly twelve minutes, its processional pace carried by repeated ensemble statements, shifting rhythmic detail, and a late opening into short reed and trumpet exchanges. “Batum” tightens the focus with a compact ostinato and a harder push from the soloists.
The second side grows more forceful: “Karadeniz” layers percussion and punching turns around a livelier flute feature, “Makadonya” breaks from its blocky piano opening into leaping ensemble figures and a fierce tenor outburst, and “Çifte Telli” builds from a simple mid-tempo line into one of the album’s warmest, fullest performances, with violin and horns locking into the same rising current. “Karsilama” closes fast in 9/8, with the front line and rhythm section pressing each other into a pounding, singing finish. -JazzRockSoul.com

5UU's with THE MOTOR TOTEMIST GUILD ‎– Elements (ReR Records 33; UK) with booklet) The 5uu's were an American avant-rock group founded in Los Angeles, California in 1984 by drummer-composer Dave Kerman. The group released their first album in 1986 and recorded a second in 1988 with Motor Totemist Guild, a similar band from the area. The two groups merged in 1988 to form U Totem and made two albums. When U Totem split up in 1994, the 5uu's reformed and went on to make two more albums. In 2000 the band became known as Dave Kerman/5uu's and released a further two albums under this name. After a long pause, an album, The Quiet In Their Bones was released in 2022. - Wiki

LA DUSELDORF- Individuellos (Teldec 6.24524; Germany) Music can sometimes make you want to get up and dance, and sometimes make you want to curl up between a comfortable pair of headphones. But only Klaus Dinger's late '70s combo La Düsseldorf will make you want to buckle up for a long road trip on an eight-lane urban highway, cruising at a steady 150 kph. The band was one of the more unique to emerge out of the counterculture fringes of Krautrock, updating with a generous measure of electronic spit and polish Dinger's earlier experiments alongside MICHAEL ROTHER in NEU!.
The same, uncompromising beat of the earlier band was stripped even closer to the motorik bone on La Düsseldorf's third and last LP, released like a matching bookend at the tail end of the same decade that saw NEU!'s debut almost exactly ten years earlier. It's hard to tell from the inner sleeve notes (as always, a barely legible handwritten scrawl), but it looks as if the band was by then reduced to just Klaus and his brother Thomas, both of them (primarily) drummers, which may explain why their collective moniker is presented here as a hastily abbreviated 'La D'.
The music itself sounds likewise rushed, with little cosmetic gloss beyond a healthy application of reverb. But the Spartan production at least preserves the energy of the performances: all sputtering drums, shimmering keyboards, and sound-effect collages, combined in a style elsewhere described as the aural equivalent of cotton candy." - Neu!mann at ProgArchives

L' ENSEMBLE RAYE – Même En Hiver / Comme Un Pinson Dans L'Eau (AYAA DT 0289; France) L'Ensemble Rayé was a Swiss avant-garde jazz and experimental music group formed in 1982 by Jean-Jacques Pedretti, Pierre Kaufmann, and later joined by other musicians. Blending elements of jazz, chamber music, and folk influences, the group developed a distinctive sound characterized by playful melodies, intricate arrangements, and a whimsical approach to composition. Over the years, L'Ensemble Rayé released several albums on the Swiss label

THIRD EAR BAND with PAUL MINNS / PAUL BUCKMASTER / SIMON HOUSE / DENIM BRIDGES / GLENN SWEENEY – Music From Macbeth (Harvest SHSP 4019; UK) "The band composed original music for the film, by adding electronic music to hand drums, woodwinds and strings.[1] Elements of music in India and the Middle East and jazz were also incorporated into the score.
While the score has some Middle Ages influence, this is not found in the scenes where Duncan is assassinated and Macbeth is killed. Polanski and the band used aleatoric music for these scenes, to communicate chaos." - Wiki
