PLEASE NOTE: The ANTHONY BRAXTON QUINTET - Live at the Rainbow Gallery CD we got in last week on Hi Hat is no longer available from us. We got in a couple dozen copies last week and sold more than half on Friday. Late in the afternoon that day, we got an e-mail from Mr. Braxton himself who told us that this is an illegitimate CD that was released without any prior consent (or payment) from/to him. Hence, we are returning whatever copies are left to our distributor.

Great New Discs from:

ERIK FRIEDLANDER With SHOKO NAGAI / SATOSHI TAKEISHI - Rings (Skipstone 023; USA) Featuring Erik Friedlander on cello & compositions, Shoko Nagai on keyboards & accordion and Satoshi Takeishi on percussion. Master cellist, Erik Friedlander, generally works on one band or project at a time producing often one great disc a year. His current trio features Shoko Nagai on keyboards and her partner Satoshi Takeishi on percussion, a team that has worked together on several previous projects. Mr. Takeishi has worked with Mr. Friedlander in several earlier bands. The first song, “The Seducer”, sounds like a waltz and features Ms. Nagai on accordion. It is lovely, kinda folky and it has a warm, enchanting sound. The melody reminds me of those of gems found on Fred Frith’s ‘Gravity’ or ’Speechless’ albums. Mr. Friedlander often strips things down to just plucked strings, piano and hand percussion, so that his lush melodies shine through. This music has a dreamy quality, as if it was a haunting scene in a movie. “Risky Business” has one of those klez-like melodies that will keep you humming once you hear it. For an earlier solo effort that Friedlander did called ‘Block Ice & Propane’, he created melodies which sounded like the American journey he took as he vacationed with his family as a kid. The same sort of rich, earthy and enchanting melodies he created are also at the center of what makes this disc so endearing. There is a trilogy here called, “Rings”, which again is stripped down yet creates a sublime oasis of floating spirits, rather hypnotic. Reading sad political news from the Daily KOS (news service) every day, I am reminded of how much the music here is like an oasis from prophets of doom screaming at us all. Special thanks to Erik Friedlander and his wonderful trio. Tasty medicine indeed. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

URI CAINE TRIO With MARK HELIAS / CLARENCE PENN + KIRK KNUFFKE - Calibrated Thickness (816 Music 1502; USA) Featuring Uri Caine on piano & compositions, Mark Helias on contrabass and Clarence Penn on drums plus special guest Kirk Knuffke on cornet on a few tracks. Last night (8/9/16), I caught a couple of great sets at the Village Vanguard for the open night of John Zorn’s Bagatelles Marathon, which will continue through Sunday and feature 15 different sets. The opening set featured Uri Caine on piano and John Medeski on organ with Jon Irabagon added on tenor sax for about half of the set. It was an exceptional set and a great way to kick off this marathon.
After some two dozen great discs for the Winter & Winter label, Uri Caine started his own label last year with a duo with Han Bennink. This is Mr. Caine’s second release for 816 Music and it features a fine trio, who have been touring and recently did a set of Zorn’s Bagatelles at the Sarajevo Jazz Fest. Mr Caine and Mr. Penn both played in the Dave Douglas Quintet for a period of time, recording together on several CDs. All of the songs here were composed by Mr. Caine and the trio has the ubicquitous Kirk Knuffke sitting in on cornet. The opening track, “Manahatta”, kicks things open with an exuberant, hard-swinging trio effort, fueled by the powerful, creative drumming of Mr. Penn. This is a mighty trio and on “Woke Up this Morning”, they exchange roles, completing each others lines effortlessly. Kirk Knuffke, who has been featured on nearly a dozen discs in the past year adds his own distinctive magic to “Icicles”, surfing the moving waves superbly. Uri seems to be dipping into several bags here, deconstructing the blues on “Submission” and stretching through hills and valleys (sparse) afterwards. Uri often plays orchestrally, tossing off layers of lines, embellishing phrases and turning expectations inside-out. “Hidden Glances” features Knuffke’s cornet, which spins its lines perfectly with the rest of the trio creating a stunning melodic tapestry. This dynamite disc contains some 15 songs and is about an hour in length. It is also one of the finest examples of a contemporary jazz piano trio at it best. Outstanding in all ways. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

NICK FRASER QUARTET * With TONY MALABY / ANDREW DOWNING / ROB CLUTON - Starer (Self-produced; USA) Featuring Nick Fraser on drums & compositions, Tony Malaby on tenor & soprano saxes, Andrew Downing on cello and Rob Clutton double bass. Last year Clean Feed released a CD from Toronto-based drummer Nick Fraser and his trio with Kris Davis and Tony Malaby. It is a superb offering and when I caught them at I-Beam, it was even better than I expected. It turned out that Mr. Fraser has been an important part of the Toronto scene for quite a while, as well as collaborating with other musicians from across Canada and the US: Marilyn Crispell, Michael Herring and Marilyn Lerner. Mr. Fraser once ran a quartet called Drumheller which included bassist Rob Clutton. This is the second disc from the Nick Fraser Quartet which includes the same personnel as their early CD.
I really like the sound of this quartet and recently heard another great quartet with the same instrumentation (two low strings, sax & drums) at Cornelia St. On “Minimalism”, the soprano sax and drums are connected while the cello and bass swerve back and forth in tight patterns. Mr. Fraser has written a series of intricate patterns for the quartet to play. Mr. Malaby erupts on tenor for “Sketch #26”, which is brief yet quite intense. I dig the simmering tenor sax and bowed strings harmonies on “Sketch #29”, as both the sax and string(s) stretch out their notes cautiously. Mr. Clutton takes a long, inspired cello solo on “Sketch 20/22”, which feared by spirited tenor by Malaby who continues the raging performance seamlessly. Go! Go! Go! Wow! This disc ends with a haunting elegy for soprano sax, skeletal strings and subtle percussion. It is a perfect, righteous ending for a splendid disc from Nick Fraser’s excellent quartet. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

* The Nick Fraser NY Quartet, with the same instrumentation as above, will be playing this Friday, August 12th at I-Beam in Brooklyn at 8:30. It features Mr. Fraser on drums, Tony Malaby on saxes, Chris Hoffman on cello and Eivind Opsvik on bass.

MATTY HARRIS With VINNY GOLIA/ et al - Double Septet (pfMENTUM 093; USA) This is a fabulous fourteen-piece LA-area large ensemble led by Matty Harris and including Vinny Golia, both of whom play multiple reeds. As I have been mentioning over the past few years, there is a large creative music scene evolving in the LA area, which as been documented by the labels: Nine Winds, Cryptogramophone (now defunked), pfMentum and Orenda. Since moving to San Diego, Jeff Kaiser, who runs pfMentum, has also been tapping into that scene as well. We got this disc in the mail a couple of weeks ago and although I know none of the musicians here, excluding Vinny Golia, I am most impressed.
This is indeed a double band with five reeds, three trumpets, Fender Rhodes & baritone guitar, two basses and two drummers. There are four pieces on this disc which run from 7 to 11 minutes each. “Party Time” is first, although I am unsure how that title fits. It begins with spacious, distant horns and eerie bowed bass. What makes the reed section unique is that all five members play soprano sax, most doubling on other reeds. As the piece evolves, the multiple horns, basses and percussion all swirl together freely yet tightly. An undercurrent of electric piano and bari guitar also interweave several lines around one another, the tempo increasing like galloping horses in a race, speeding up and then slowing back down. “10,000 Kimmys Gibbler” features a great soprano solo sailing over the band which moves tightly in waves with strong rhythm team interaction underneath. “Cockapoo Army” features a dreamy, laid back vibe with sublime muted trumpets floating on top. There is some wonderful bass clarinet playing by Mr Harris emanating down below as the rest of the horns play those tight layers around him for “Oh, A Little Day Trip…”. There is a chorus of many horns all swirling together, tightly and rather kaleidoscopically. The effect is disorienting yet impossible not to be impressed by. This disc is rather short at 34 minutes, yet it is consistently fascinating throughout. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

VINNY GOLIA LARGE ENSEMBLE With BRAD DUTZ/WAYNE PEET/MICHAEL VLATKOVICH/KEN FILIANO/BRUCE FOWLER et al - Commemoration: Tribute to John Carter [2 CD set] (Nine Winds 150+160; USA)
2 CD Set $24

HEALING ORCHESTRA - From Now On! (Hote Marge 13; France) The Healing Orchestra, like the Healing Unit (reviewed here last week- 8/5/16), is a large ten piece ensemble run by French pianist/vibes player Paul Wacrenier, who wrote all of the compositions and arrangements. The title of the first song, “Made of Sound of Joy”, is takes from a Sun Ra album title and hence, it does have a sprawling Sun Ra-like orchestral sound, from free to tightly played and arranged. Several horns solo at the same time, yet sound well-interconnected. There are two three-part pieces here which make up the bilk of this disc. The first suite is called, “Three Grounds for Being” and it sounds like the heavens are parting with cascading, harp-like horns swirling together, getting freer as it evolves. Mr. Wacrenier mentions the influence of Dollar Brand in the liner notes, the blending of South African folk/Kwela melodies at the center of moving storm does make sense. A number of spirited solos emerge from the different horns reaching out above the Brotherhood of Breath-like expanse. Although the large ensemble has a tendency to go far out, Mr. Wacrenier knows how to reel them back in. It seems hdd to believe that there are no big names here as this music is as strong as anything from the more well known modern jazz orchestras of renown. Wacrenier does play at least one great piano solo himself but that is just icing on an already tasty and thick stew. Extraordinary and unknown, how often does that happen??? - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

BUCK CURRAN - Immortal Light (ESP-Disk 5014; USA) ‘Immortal Light’ is the debut solo album by guitarist-singer-songwriter Buck Curran. Since 2005, Buck has recorded and performed as one half of the alt-folk duo Arborea. To date, Arborea has released five albums, including 2013's ESP-Disk' release Fortress of the Sun (ESP-Disk 5002-CD&LP). Buck's music is influenced by landscapes of nature and has developed through a decade of playing with Arborea, and the experience of playing blues and folk throughout the 1990s. He also draws inspiration from the deep well of folk and rock of the 1960s (Robbie Basho, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, Tim Buckley), American blues and folk music of the 1930s, British folk and psychedelic folk/rock of the '60s and early '70s (Peter Green, Sandy Denny, Pentangle, Led Zeppelin, Martin Simpson), Indian classical music (Pandit Nikhil Banerjee) and jazz of the '50s and '60s (Ornette Coleman, John Coltrane). Bob Boilen, the host of NPR's All Songs Considered, listed Arborea among his favorite concerts and recommended live acts in 2012. Arborea's fourth album, Red Planet, was released in 2011 and received critical praise making: David Fricke's Rolling Stone "Best Under-the-Radar Albums of 2011", Guitar Player Magazine Editors "Top Pick", Uncut "Top 100 Albums of 2011", etc. Fortress of the Sun made AllMusic's "Favorite Folk Albums of 2013" and "Favorite Singer/Songwriter Albums of 2013", Acoustic Guitar's "Best Acoustic Albums of 2013", Best of Echoes 2013 Listener Poll, etc. Paste also listed Arborea in their profile of top musical acts in Maine for their "50 States Project". Personnel: vocals, guitars, harmonium, flute, banjo - Buck Curran; Backup vocals on "New Moontide" and "Bad Moon Rising". Featured lead vocals and harmonium on "Immortal Light." - Shanti Deschaine.

When Toto Alvarez, experimental guitarist played here this past Monday (8/8/16) with Susan Alcorn, a number of other creative musicians from Argentina and Brazil showed up and left us with the following CDs:

MARCOS CAMPELLO / FRANZISKA SCHROEDER / RENATO GODOY - Barely Cool (pfMENTUM 090; USA) Featuring Marcos Campello on guitar, Franziska Schroeder on sax and Renato Godoy on drums. This trio is from Brazil and this disc was recorded in Rio de Janeiro in May of 2014. We don’t hear from South American creative musicians as often as one might imagine, but this has changed over the past few years. More recently there has been a dozen or so disc from musicians from Columbia, Argentina, Peru and now Brazil, which is/was a center for creative and commercial pop music for many years. I hadn’t heard of any of the musicians from this trio before Mr. Campello left us with a couple of discs. As I listen to this disc which was well-recorded in a studio, I try to tell if there is anything here that would lead one to think that it was from Brazil. Not really, this is free music which is focused and well-played. At times it does remind me of the free improv sections on the first Henry Cow album from 1973. The sound is often restrained and free simultaneously and quite impressive nonetheless. All three members get a chance to stretch out and are rarely chaotic. The cover art features three strange alien-looking beings, which somehow fits this strange yet compelling music just right. Guitarist Campello plays a good deal of Frith-like fractured lines without going too far out matching the intensity and creative spirit of the other members of this trio. Soprano saxist, Schroeder, is somewhere between Lol Coxhill and Steve Lacy but perhaps not as distinctive as these giants. The drums recall the organic quality of Hamid Drake without any grooves going on but still matching the guitar and sax perfectly. Don’t let this one pass you by. It rules. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

MARCOS CAMPELLO / J. P. CARON - self/titled [LTD Edition of 300/CD-R] (Seminal Records Oco 2; Brazil) Marcos Campello plays guitar and is from Brazil. Mr Campello is a member of the Rio de Janeiro free/rock band Chinese Cookie Poets and has worked with Paal Nilssen-Love and Okkyung Lee. Mr. J.P. Caron plays untuned (?) piano, both inside and on the keyboard. Mr. Campello sounds like he is playing acoustic or semi-acoustic while Mr. Caron appears to be rubbing the strings inside the piano with assorted objects. It is often hard to tell who is doing what as their sounds and approach is similar in timbre or texture. Although some of this music is quite sparse, it does sound like that later duo disc with Derek Bailey and Agusti Fernandez, perhaps less distinctive. You need to turn the volume up since it is often quiet or restrained. It does take a bit patience and focus to hear the many nuanced sounds interwoven amongst the different strings. There is a sense of calm at the center of this music which is often shifting as the two instruments stretch out and explore. Midway through the second piece, things move into a more violent/intense eruption which took me by surprise. There were a few sections when things did erupt and left me at the edge of my seat. Overall, I really dig what they are doing and realize the free/improv is a universal language which know no borders. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

Argentinian flutist & composer, Camilo Angeles*, came to visit us earlier this week and left us with three CDs. Hard to believe but each one is amazing! Mr. Camilo will be playing here at DMG on Sunday, September 11th. More info soon about that in-store.

ANIMAL CERAMICO - Nicotina os Primavera (Buh Records 77; Peru) Featuring Camilo Angeles* on flutes, Juan Olivera on trumpet, Violeta Garcia on cello, Pia Hernandez on piano, Carlos Quebrada on bass, Fermin Merio on vibes and Nicolas Del Aquila on drums. Argentinian flutist Camilo Angeles stopped by this past weekend and left us with three CDs. Mr. Angeles is the main composer on this disc which goes under the group name: Animal Ceramico (ceramic animal). This is a seven piece mostly acoustic band and the sound is warm and superbly recorded. The music has a rich, progressive rock like sound, Henry Cow-like at times but with flute as the occasional lead instrument. There are three long pieces here which go through different sections. Extraordinary solos from the trumpet, cello and plano, together and apart, are just one of the riches found here. There are sections where the flute and cello will play a duo, pushing each other through extended-technique experiments which never go too far out yet remain edge-of-your-seat fascinating. This disc is like a long-long prog gem which seemed to have come out of nowhere but which is incredible nonetheless. Hard to believe that this is as amazing as it is considering none of us have heard of these musicians before this. We just got a half dozen and we need to get more ASAP, if we can. Order quickly, please. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

SALES DE BANO - Horror Vacui (Viajero Inmovil 066; Argentina) Featuring Mariano Cepeda on electric guitar & effects, Camilo Angeles on flute, Agustin Zuanigh on trumpet & flugelhorn, Andres Marino on piano & Fender Rhodes, Carlos Quebrada on electric bass & compositions and Federico Isasti on drums. This is the second disc from Sales de Bano (“bath salts”) that we just in from Argentinian flutist & composer Camilo Angeles and it was released earlier this year (2016). The personnel for this sextet is the same as their previous disc, although there are a few guests like Juan Olivera (trumpet) who is from Animal Ceramico, another Argentinian band whose great disc I just reviewed as well.
Two years after there last disc (‘Estrangulado el Mundo”) and Sales de Bano have grown even stronger, more spirited more inventive and more exuberant! Things begin quietly, slowly building from a more modest intro. The pieces here are just named with number in Spanish. The music blends progressive rock, chamber jazz and modern classical elements and does’t quite sound like any other band I’ve heard. Each piece goes through a series of sections which utilize the talents of all six members without resorting to very many solos. There are a few amazing solos nonetheless: guitarist Mariano Cepeda takes a long, expressive, story-like solo on “Cuatro”. “Seis” actually comes close to King Crimson-like power, with a swell, lumbering oft-kilter groove and a great mix of electric piano, electric guitar and trumpet. These pieces are extremely diverse and draw from a wealth of influences or ideas. There are so many surprising twists and turns it is hard to believe that this is just one band and not several.

SALES DE BANO - Estrangulado el Mundo (Kuai Music; Argentina) Featuring Mariano Cepeda on electric guitar & effects, Camilo Angeles on flute, Agustin Zuanigh on trumpet & flugelhorn, Andres Marino on piano & Fender Rhodes, Carlos Quebrada on electric bass & compositions and Federico Isasti on drums. Argentinian flutist & composer Camilo Angeles recently came to visit DMG and left us with three CDs from two bands. This disc was recorded in a studio in Buenos Argentina in 2013. I had not heard of any of these musicians before getting these discs but CD by Animal Ceramico turned out to be one of those unknown progressive gems that we all seek. Animal Ceramico are a septet and share a couple of members with Sales de Bano (Mr. Angeles & Mr. Quebrada), who are a sextet. And like Animal Cermanico, Sales de Bano are an impressive progressive band. After an opening theme tightly played by the flute and trumpet, things calm down to a more relaxed yet elegant nature, somewhere between chamber jazz and rock. There is a long, inventive electric guitar solo which is the highlight of “Zoro Astro”, which concludes with some fine trumpet playing as well. While the electric piano plays a hypnotic pattern on “30”, the trumpet and flute add their own layer, the currents slowly shifting. The flute solo by Mr. Angeles is superb, adding just enough subtle electronic spice to give it a more dreamy resonance. What makes this disc so special is the way it remains calm at the center yet has inventive chamber-like elements throughout. Things finally erupt on “Los Mayores Rios se Deslizan…”, which seems to balance the more feisty trumpet solo section with a restrained flute & piano chamber part. Each piece involves several interlocking parts, flute & trumpet, piano & guitar with a thoughtful rhythm team. Even the occasional solos are modest yet consistently inventive without any unnecessary flash. This is yet another undiscovered gem waiting to be savored by the more discerning members of the DMG faithful. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

Historic & Archival Recordings:

BOB DYLAN - Legendary Broadcasts 1969-1984 (BDA 108; UK) "While Bob Dylan has, in later years certainly, been accused of reclusive behavior when it comes to TV and radio interviews, he has never been one to avoid coming forward to play his music live for television audiences. Indeed many of his studio albums since 1969's Nashville Skyline have encouraged some form of promotional appearance on 'the box'. This album captures many of these broadcasts for the first time on CD, starting in 1969 with Bob's duet on the Johnny Cash show, and taking the trail through the 1970s, which includes live versions of cuts from albums such as Blood on the Tracks and Slow Train Coming, and into the early 1980s with numbers from Infidels. Including 13 broadcast recordings in all and with a generous playing time of 65 minutes, this CD will prove a true delight for all Dylan fans as it presents a rare collection of alternative versions of much loved Bob Dylan compositions."
CD $15

DUNGEN - Ta Det Lugnt (Subliminla Sounds 010; Sweden) No longer available through Kemado, this 2004 breakthrough album is now available again on its original label: Subliminal Sounds. The third and globally astounding album from the young and talented Swedish multi-instrumentalist Gustav Ejstes aka Dungen. Ta Det Lugnt is a beautiful multifaceted musical trip straight into your head and deep out in the Swedish forests. It offers Dungen's most exciting and adventurous recordings and features stunning musicianship, stellar vocals, Hammond B-3 organ, flute, violin, groovy bass, swinging drums, electric and acoustic guitars, screaming fuzz, and spellbinding Swedish folk-rock pop psych. Original Pitchfork rating: 9.3!

RAPOON - Waiting By The River (Klanggalerie 214; Austria) "Klanggalerie are very happy to announce a new collaboration with Rapoon after a far too long 12 year break. Waiting By The River is the all-new album by Robin Storey that takes the project into previously uncharted territory. Founded in 1992 after Storey left Zoviet France, Rapoon soon became an outstanding ethno-dark ambient project that has gained a cult following all over the world. More than 50 albums have been released over those 25 years, some more beat driven, others more playful and with ambient sounds and ethnic influences. Rapoon has never stopped evolving - think of Cultural Forgeries, an album full of unplugged acoustic music. Or Downgliding, full of compositions on the piano. In 2016, Rapoon presents an album full of songs. You will hear guitars, vocals, stories are being told. A very different approach to Rapoon and one you've never heard before. Needless to say, the trademark Rapoon sound is still there. But this time you get a little extra. Another milestone in the band's discography."
CD $19

RENALDO & THE LOAF - Breadcrumbs (Klanggalerie 224; Austria) "The final chapter in our Renaldo & The Loaf re-issue series! Breadcrumbs collects all pieces that somehow didn't fit onto the other deluxe CDs. The first section, tracks 1 to 5, gathers up the extra songs from Struve & Sneff and gives them their own space. After an interlude (a new instrumental), the second section is mainly unreleased music. Only 'Gone To Gondwana' has been released before as this version on 'Olleh Olleh Rotcod'. The track 'Is This Tradition?' is a song Renaldo recorded with a visitor in 1984. After a second interlude (another new instrumental) the third section is the 1984 mixes of Struve & Sneff reconstructed in the original track order. The music has been carefully remastered by the band in 2016. New artwork was provided by Renaldo M."

KLAUS SCHULZE & PETE NAMLOOK - The Dark Side of the Moog Vol. 9-11 (Made in Germany 1402; Germany) "Complex re-release of the most remarkable and worldwide sought after series The Dark Side Of The Moog by German electronic pioneers Klaus Schulze and Pete Namlook (aka Peter Kuhlmann) in three slip lid boxsets, each with 5 CDs, incl. bonus material and new linernotes. The third box contains Vol. 9 to Vol. 11 and two bonus CDs. The relationship between Klaus and Pete and the exchange of ideas was unorthodox from the beginning of their co-operation, in that they rarely met personally. The most remarkable contacts they had were outside of their studios, for instance their concert of April 1999 at the Jazz Festival in Hamburg, which was released as an edited version on Dark Side Of The Moog, Vol.8 - the interplay and chemistry between them is clearly evident, and it becomes even clearer on the un-edited version of the concert. The influence Namlook had on Klaus's music in the middle of the nineties should not be taken lightly, because although Klaus dearly loved those early-analogue elements from his own music, they had become, to an extent, lost. It was Pete who fortified him to go back to the analogue charm of his early albums and it was Pete who supported him in the modification of his analogue instruments, leading finally to the epoch-making Schulze album from 1996 - Are You Sequenced?. And so a legendary series of recordings was born. Dark Side Of The Moog grew more or less unplanned to a sprawling, stately-sized series of eleven volumes recorded between 1994 and 2008, only ending with the early, tragic death of Pete on November 8th 2012."
5 CD set $35

KLAUS SCHULZE - Moondawn (Made in Germany MIG 1542; Germany) "Re-release of the classic Klaus Schulze album Moondawn, original released in 1976. 'The album is a dynamic and sometimes explosive expression of the synthesized sound so recognizable as Klaus Schulze.' ('Trouser Press'/USA, November 1977). Without doubt Moondawn is one of Klaus Schulze's cultic albums. Klaus was working with a 'Big Moog' for the very first time, which results into a special 'fat' sound. On 'Moondawn' Klaus Schulze was accompanied by Harald Grosskopf on drums. Klaus Schulze first attracted attention as a member of the German pioneers of electronic music, Tangerine Dream. Following the release of their debut LP, Electronic Meditation he departed for a solo career. Klaus' recorded work typically features extended pieces sometimes filling an entire album built around computer-generated synthesizers and other specially programmed electronic effects. Klaus Schulze remains a cult figure in the whole world. He is widely considered an avant-garde mainstay as well as a founding father of both the new-age space music and electronica genres."

With upwards of 300 recordings as a leader, soloist or collaborator, new listeners often ask me/us where to begin. With this book, Stuart Broomer has done a marvelous job of unraveling the enigmatic music/view of Anthony Braxton. In eight concise chapters, Mr. Broomer explains the different periods that Mr. Braxton has evolved through. Broomer utilizes (excerpts of) interviews with Mr. Braxton as well as writing clearly and thoughtfully about Mr. Braxton's often complex layer of ideas that make his philosophy of his music and its place in the world. As I read each chapter, I then listen to a Braxton disc from the discussed period to help shed some light on my own understanding of Mr. Braxton's incredible universe. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG
