A handful of reviews from the DMG database:

ALBERTO BRAIDA - Talus (Nuscope 1022; USA) This disc, which was recorded on November 28, 2008, features Braida on a beautiful Fazioli concert grand at Artesuono Studios in Udine, Italy with noted engineer Stefano Amerio. According to Francesco Martinelli's liner notes, "This music is a new combination where strains of jazz, 20th Century music, and the past 40 years of European improvised pianism are the ingredients of an organically balanced musical architecture which is exquisitely pianistic without resorting to any pre-set approaches."Comes with an 8-page booklet with liner notes from Pisa, Italy-based journalist Francesco Martinelli, and intriguing cover art from Norwegian artist Terry Nilssen-Love.

MORTON FELDMAN//LOUIS GOLDSTEIN - For Bunita Marcus (Nuscope 1024; USA) On June 1, 2010, Nuscope releases Morton Feldman's For Bunita Marcus by pianist Louis Goldstein. Frank Martin of Media Production Associates, who also engineered Goldstein's acclaimed recording of Feldman's Triadic Memories, remained behind the desk as Goldstein recorded For Bunita Marcus on a recently-acquired Steinway D at Brendle Recital Hall on the campus of Wake Forest University late last fall. Goldstein's interpretation of Feldman's Triadic Memories is considered one of the best of all of the currently available versions. According to Grant Chu Covell at the La Folia website, "This has got to be 2000's best piano recording. These two discs (Triadic Memories coupled with John Cage's One5) had better garner prizes and commendations throughout the industry or else Western Civilization is coming to an end. Everything comes together in this phenomenally well-recorded 2 CD set. The piano is rich and closely miked, and the piano's tuning is superb. Louis Goldstein plays with control and delicacy." This version of For Bunita Marcus includes an 8-page booklet with liner notes from Dallas-based musicologist Laurie Shulman and abstract expressionist artwork from the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth by the controversial Philip Guston, one of Morton Feldman's long-time friends.

SCOTT FIELDS/FRANCOIS HOULE/JASON ROEBKE - Hornets Collage (Nuscope 1005; USA) I was intrigued by guitarist Scott Fields (from Wisconsin) when I saw him perform at Roulette a few years back and started collecting his cds. We've become e-mail friends ever since. I have also been overwhelmed by clarinetist Francois Houle (Vancouver) after seeing/hearing him play in ensembles both large (Now Orchestra) and small at the Victoriaville Fest on several occasions, plus his tribute to John Carter cd with Dave Douglas & Mark Dresser was among my favorites of last year. So, when Scott asked if this splendid trio could play at DMG last year, I was honored. Both their set in the store and this release are completely acoustic and this is a real treasure. Jason Roebke played double bass and I'm sure we'll be hearing more from him. I am also a fan of the Jimmy Giuffre Trio from the 60's with the very same instrumentation and it's good to hear how this combination of sounds has developed over thirty plus years. What's interesting about 'hornets collage' is that all but one of the 18 pieces are under 7 1/2 minutes, so most of them are relatively short and concise. Like all cds on the nuscope label, this one is extremely well recorded, so one can rapt attention to the smallest or quietest detail. From ultra sparse sections to busy portions, there is an absorbing thread that holds this all together. "When She Speaks..." recalls that quirky Giuffre type of excursion with tight little flashes of notes that quickly erupt. Five of these pieces are collective improvs and each is an adventure unto itself, open ended, boisterous and mysterious, yet somehow connected through deep listening and reacting. The majority of these pieces are (well) written and involve a variety of strategies and textures. Concentrated, thoughtful and provocative sounds to ponder. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

GUILLERMO GREGORIO/PANDELIS KARAYORGIS/NATE McBRIDE - Chicago Approach (Nuscope 1019; USA) According to reedist/composer Guillermo Gregorio, this trio with pianist/composer Pandelis Karayorgis and double-bassist Nate McBride evidences a very consistent group. And, from the opening strains of Assembly through the closing notes in Photogram, this is not only a consistent group, but a newborn trio - a true collective. According to journalist Michael Rosenstein, "It's striking how the three play off of each other, drawing on each of their strengths while bringing out new shadings as well. Karayorgis' oblique angularities and impeccable sense of harmonic phrasing are there, only concentrated to a heady distillate. Here his playing is as much about the space around the notes as it is attention to the carefully placed angular motifs and shard-like chords. McBride is an insightful musician who is now receiving the attention he deserves. This trio setting brings out the muscular grace in his playing, as the dark timbres of his bass counter with the piano and clarinet. Gregorio's clarinet completes the picture. Throughout, his playing is infused with the warm woody tones and phrasing of the jazz clarinet vocabulary while filtered through his structuralist sensibility. With these three, the lines between composition and improvisations are not only blurred, they are completely irrelevant. Listen to the trio's reading of Giuffre's Variation which snakes Gregorio's clarinet over Karayorgis' fleet Monk-like abstractions and McBride's freely walking counterpoint. Then jump to the improvised Chicago Space II which sounds as if it might be part of the same compositional series. The dark beauty of the pianist's Chicago Approach has strong synergies with the collective Lake Michigan Cues or the bass/clarinet duo Catalpa. And one can easily hear the structural affinities between the spider-walk across the angular theme of Don Friedman's Spring Signs, the collectively improvised Airplanes, and the geometric refractions of Gregorio's Space Modulator. With all of these pieces, they draw a thread between compositional form, a deep-seated internalization of the jazz tradition, and complementary strategies toward improvisation.

2ND OUTLET [LUC HOUTKAMP/COR FUHLER/MARTIN BLUME] - Burnt Sienna (Nuscope 1015; USA) This new electroacoustic disc, the first on the nuscope recordings label, features the trio 2nd Outlet with saxophonist/electronics master Luc Houtkamp, pianist Cor Fuhler, and percussionist Martin Blume. This CD was recorded at the LOFT in Koln, Germany during two different sessions in 2002 and 2003. According to Thomas Lehn in the liner notes, "The resulting identity of 2nd Outlet is their finely balanced, but not too serious, act of playing with both of their identities. The traditional elements are on one hand, and the timbre work is on the other. The traditional idioms are set into the light of reflection, questioning their idiomatic meanings, by letting them co-exist with very imaginative timbre emanations, which you can hear across the entire disc in multiple shades and shapes." In the Summer 2004 issue of Signal to Noise magazine, Bill Meyer says, 2nd Outlet's "...billing as a band is telling, for nothing about this music speaks of overweaning ego. Which isn't to suggest that they're overly reserved; each player proceeds decisively, and the collective musters a vigor that any self-respecting energy music ensemble would be glad to claim for its own." This release features an 8-page booklet with liner notes from German synthesist Thomas Lehn and very original art from Dallas, Texas resident John Pomara.

LISA ULLEN - Catachresis: The Art Of Solo Piano (Nuscope 1025; USA) Swedish pianist Lisa Ullen's first solo piano disc, titled 'Catachresis', was beautifully recorded on a new Fazioli grand piano. I hadn't heard of Swedish pianist, Lisa Ullen, before this but I eagerly awaited checking it out. Extraordinary is all I can say as I dive in to her unique approach. Ms. Ullen does have a few previous discs as a leader with her own quartet, a trio and a 2 disc set with a bassist named Nina de Heney. Ms. Ullen prepares the piano in her own way coaxing a variety of unique sounds, creating new sounds and textures along the way. Each of the thirteen pieces explore a different approach or terrain. Each piece is fascinating for different reasons, some abrupt, some intense and some twisted into odd shapes. "Low Voice I" is dark and ominous and deals with those sounds from the low end of the piano. I caught Spanish pianist Agusti Fernandez the other night playing a duo with Joe Morris at The Stone and Agusti just dealt with sounds inside the piano for part of his set, using block of wood to create weird sounds. Ms. Ullen also works hard to create bizarre sounds inside the piano, taking her time to craft strange sounds, one or two at a time, each one selectively chosen. Each piece is like entering a new world to explore and evoke different spirits. Like all of the other treasures on Nuscope, it will take some time to further absorb everything found within. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, Downtown Music Gallery

BIGGI VINKELOE/DAMON SMITH/KJELL NORDESON - Elegans (Nuscope 1017; USA) This is another extra-special trio offering from the consistently excellent Nuscope label featuring Ms. Biggi Vinkeloe on alto sax & flute, Damon Smith on contrabass and Kjell Nordeson on drums & vibes. You must know of Swedish saxist, Biggi Vinkeloe , from her half dozen trio & duo discs with bassists Barre Phillips, Peter Kowald and Lisle Ellis. She obviously chooses her bassists wisely, so here we find one of the bay area's best, Damon Smith. Damon runs the swell Balance Point Acoustics label and has also worked with Peter Kowald, Henry Kaiser, Frank Gratkowski and Wolfgang Fuchs. Kjell Nordeson is also one of Scandinavia's best percussionists, having worked with the Aaly Trio, School Days and the under-rated, yet amazing Exploding Customer. In the liner notes, label head, Russ Summers, compares Biggi to Ornette Coleman and Lee Konitz, and I can certainly those influences in her wonderful, thoughtful and provocative playing. Commencing with the somber, "Today, The Sun is Blue", the sax and bowed bass softly drift together. All but one of the 14 pieces is under 5 1/2 minutes, so that each piece remains focused on a few ideas at a time. The title piece is the only one that passes the seven minute mark and the pace starts to speed up a bit, as the trio slowly ascend and swirl together modestly. Biggi's warm tone and careful placement of notes make this one of the most dreamy of any improv discs I've heard for quite some time. Kjell's spacious, hovering vibes also add a most subtle haunting vibe to the proceedings. Damon also does some fine work by adding exquisite punctuation a note or two at a time, making each one count, never too busy, yet always helping center what is slowly revealed. At times, I hear Ornette's "Golden Circle" trio from the mid-sixties, played almost in slow motion, yet they remain fascinating and quite restrained simultaneously. I hear the ghost-like spirit of Jimmy Guiffre in there somewhere as well. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, Downtown Music Gallery

ISABELLE DUTHOIT / GEORG GRAEWE - Parlance (Nuscope 1030; USA) Featuring Isabelle Duthoit on clarinet & voice and Georg Graewe on Bosendorfer piano. On a few previous occasions, I have had the opportunity to hear & see French clarinet/vocalist Isabelle Duthoit and was knocked out by her stunning performance. Two times Ms. Duthoit was in a duo with Franz Hautzinger on trumpet and once in a quartet Dieb 13, Martin Tetreault and Hautzinger again. Here Ms. Duthoit collaborates with the great German pianist Georg Graewe who has quintet records on FMP, as well as working with Gerry Hemingway, Frank Gratkowski and Evan Parker. Beginning quietly, tentatively, both musicians suspended in calm currents, playful, thoughtful, a natural flow, building incrementally. There times when Ms. Duthoit will focus on one note and create a hushed feedback-like drone which is quietly disorienting. The tempo and intensity increase or evolve throughout, fragile lines, criss-crossing, linking, assembling fragments, hovering around a busy nest. At times, Ms. Duthoit plays mysterious breath-like sounds, similar to what the lower-case players in Austria were doing a few years back. The good thing is she isn’t stuck at just doing that limited timbral exploration. What is amazing here is how well the duo work together creating a trans-dimensional shift midway and taking us on a hypnotic journey within and eventually without, further out but too much. Extra-ordinary! - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG
