AND FOR THE NEW DISCS:

KEITH ROWE - The Room (Erstwhile ERSTSOLO 01; USA) Only Rowe's third solo record in his 40+ year recording career, 'The Room' is an extremely personal statement and a labor of love, thought about and worked on for the last two years until he was satisfied with it. This is the first release in the new ErstSolo sub series, and will be in a two-fold digipak, with Rowe's paintings on all six panels of the inside and outside. Although Keith Rowe is known as a guitarist, his approach (guitar-on-table) and sound is completely unique and utterly distinctive. He uses a variety of objects and oddities to coax sounds from his electric guitar: an e-bow, metal & wooden things, radio transmissions and a regular bow. What we actually hear is fine-tuned static, occasional radio snippets and electronic-like sounds. What continues to amaze me is the way Mr. Rowe has focused his sound into a highly personal soundscape. It remains mysterious, yet it sounds like a Keith Rowe disc. Both Erstwhile Records and Keith Rowe have taken their time to make sure that this disc is quite the magical gem it appears to be. - BLG

BERN NIX - Low Barometer [Ltd signed & #d edition of 20] (Tompkins Square; USA) Downtown Music Gallery is the exclusive seller of the CD-R version of Bern Nix's new album, 'Low Barometer', on NYC's Tompkins Square label. The album, heretofore only available as a digital-only release via eMusic, is now offered in a limited edition of only 20 CD-R's, packaged in a DVD-sized case with brief personal notes, each numbered and signed by Bern Nix.
Guitarist Bern Nix, who famously collaborated with Ornette Coleman for years as a member of Prime Time, returns with his first album in ten years. 'Low Barometer' is a solo acoustic album of all original compositions, full of Nix's unique improvisational brilliance. The album has received mentions in Downbeat and Time Out NY among others. This is a superbly recorded solo acoustic guitar offering that I find to be lovely, melancholy and quite stunning in its own low-key way. Although Bern has written all of the pieces on this disc, they sound as if they were inspired by jazz standard melodies. Certainly one of the best acoustic jazz guitar discs we've heard in a long while. - BLG
Bern will perform at Vision Festival 2007 with Jayne Cortez and the Firespitters, alongside Denardo Coleman and other "special guests" at the Angel Orensanz Foundation, 172 Norfolk St. NYC, on Thursday June 21st, 10:30 PM.
Unfortunately, CD IS SOLD OUT ALREADY TO OUR NEWSLETTER SUBSCRIBERS - PLEASE DO NOT ORDER!

PHILIP GIBBS - Thoughts and Feelings / Music for Guitars (DUNS 054; UK) (Limited Edition) Featuring Philip Gibbs on Fender Strat, half-fretted lute guitar, toy guitar, banjos, ukelele, fretless electric & prepared acoustic guitars. An astonishing solo offering by perhaps the greatest "unknown" guitarist on this planet. Considering that Mr. Gibbs appears on some forty discs with Paul Dunmall and Keith Tippett, he remains a shadowy figure, yet he never ceases to amaze me with his unique talent and touch on various guitars. This is Philip's first solo disc and it captures what is so incredible about this fine plectral-based explorer. It begins with a subtle, prayer-like throat-singing drone (sampled?), but soon Philip's harp-like acoustic guitar(s) enters with flurries of notes, accompanied by some percussive string tapping. Gibbs creates evolving background textures on different stringed instruments as he takes off on a number of super-quick solos on different guitars, weaving layers of lines with dizzying dexterity. Some of the background textures are altered or sped up and all are mysteriously woven together and impossible to pin down. Some of the sounds are a bit alien, yet all of the sounds are most fascinating to behold. Backwards guitars occasionally emerge from the waves, keeping things a bit off-balance. I can hear bits of Pete Cosey with Miles, Henry Kaiser's alien sonic stylings and Derek Bailey's freer terrain. There is too much here to describe, so I will leave it up to you to dive in and hopefully not drown. - BLG

BORBETOMAGUS [DONALD MILLER/DON DIETRICH/JIM SAUTER] & HIJOKAIDAN - Both Noises End Burning (Victo 106; Canada) I just got back from another incredible Victoriaville New Music festival in Quebec and I feel invigorated with some 24 sets of challenging music from around the planet.
This disc is the latest installment of live-from-Victo CD's from the previous fest in May of 2006. That fest was a particularly noise-filled one with the likes of Sunn)))) O, Haino Keiji, KK Null Trio, Mike Patton & ZU and Fe-Mail. This disc captures perhaps the ultimate collaboration between two monsters of noise: Borbetomagus (from Nyack, NY) and Hijokaidan from Japan. The long-running and legendary Borbetomagus continue to feature Jim Sauter & Don Dietrich on saxes with plastic tube extensions and Donald Miller on electric guitar. The equally legendary Hijokaidan feature Mr. Jojo Hiroshige on electric guitar, Ms. Unko Hiroshige on voice, Mr. Toshiji Mikawa on electronics and Ms. Nao Shibata on drums. This captured the entire nearly 72-minute set in all of its intense glory. There was a good deal to take in visually as both groups launched into their over-the-top noise-making din and you can see some nifty pix in the booklet. I remember the gig itself to be pretty fucking loud and hilarious to watch at times, sort-of like a Godzilla versus King Kong type of flick. They worked hard on the sound of this disc so you can hear diversity of noise up close, but we have control of the at-home volume. At nearly 72-minutes, without any indexing, this disc can be an overwhelming task, yet, it will be appreciated by a new and old audience of heavy noise fans. Blistering, screaming, blast-furnace, industrial-strength explosion of metallic shrapnel, vocal screams, electronic blitzkrieg insanity. Is too much not enough?!? My brain is melting! - BLG

REJOICE! - A NEW SLEEPYTIME GORILLA MUSEUM ALBUM!

SLEEPYTIME GORILLA MUSEUM [NILS FRYKDAHL/DAN RATHBURN/CARLA KIHLSTEDT/MOE! STAINO/FRANK GRAU] - In Glorious Times (The End 82; USA) Triumphantly smothered within the intricate stylings of musical evolution, the expansive world of literature and the pain and passion of one's emotions, Oakland, California's Rock-against-Rock pioneers Sleepytime Gorilla Museum have once again imbedded themselves deep in the creative process, allowing themselves to reach new plateaus on their latest album In Glorious Times. The new album celebrates the extremes of sonic debilitation, with this muffled cry into the dark night of the soul. The band know for their expressive and wildly entertaining theatrical live shows gives justice to their eclectic music in the live forum and plan to stay on the road for the most of 2007.

and a repress of their first album - now with 3 more cuts!

SLEEPYTIME GORILLA MUSEUM [NILS FRYKDAHL/DAN RATHBURN/CARLA KIHLSTEDT/MOE! STAINO/FRANK GRAU] - Grand Opening And Closing! PlusÉ (The End 75; USA) [This new 2006 edition has 3 bonus cuts not on the original release including 2 unreleased songs and a live bonus recorded by the new line-up.!] "This California band has been getting a lot of ink & attention recently, & it's no surprise why, as this is an intriguing and classy release, from the music all the way to the packaging. I hear a sorta strange hybrid of metal & RIO attention to detail & complexity (I think the Art Bears are a definite, audible influence). The music is performed on vocals (male & female), violin, guitars, bass, percussion and drums with other instruments thrown in for texture & interest. Sometimes the vocals veer a little too near "cookie monster land" for my tastes, but they are not the main thrust of what's going on here anyway. If you give this release the time it needs to circulate in your cranium, I think you'll find it very worthwhile." - Steve Feigenbaum, Cuneiform. "A conference call with Art Bears, Meshuggah and Tool! On my TOP TEN of 2003!" - MannyLunch

WILCO [w/ NELS CLINE] - Sky Blue Sky (Nonesuch/Elektra; USA) In 1999, Wilco willingly abdicated their position as one of the leading acts in the alt-country movement to dive head-first into the challenging waters of experimental pop with their album Summerteeth, and moved even further away from their rootsy origins with Yankee Hotel Foxtrot and A Ghost Is Born, winning the group a new and enthusiastic audience along the way. So it might amuse a number of the band's earlier fans that in many respects Wilco's sixth studio album, Sky Blue Sky, sounds like the long-awaited follow-up to 1996's Being There -- while it lacks the ramshackle shape-shifting and broad twang of that earlier album, Sky Blue Sky represents a shift back to an organic sound and approach that suggests the influence of Neil Young's Harvest and the more polished avenues of '70s soft rock. Sky Blue Sky also marks Wilco's first studio recordings since Nels Cline and Pat Sansone joined the group, and they certainly make their presence felt -- with Cline, Wilco has its strongest guitarist to date, and while his interplay with Sansone on numbers like "Impossible Germany" and "Walken" lacks the skronky muscle of his more avant-garde work of the past, it's never less than inspired and he works real wonders with Jeff Tweedy's lovely melodies. Sansone's keyboard work also shines, adding soulful accents to "Side with the Seeds" and Mellotron on "Leave Me (Like You Found Me)," as does Mikael Jorgensen's piano and organ, and overall this is Wilco's strongest album as an ensemble to date. Tweedy's vocals boast a clarity and nuance that reveals he's grown in confidence and skill as a singer, and the songs recall Summerteeth's beautiful but unsettling mix of lovely tunes and lyrics that focus on troubled souls and crumbling relationships. Between the pensive "Be Patient with Me," the lovelorn "Hate It Here," and "On and On and On"'s pledge that "we'll stay together" squared off against the resignation of "Please don't cry/We're designed to die," Sky Blue Sky isn't afraid to go to the dark places, but Tweedy and his bandmates also find plenty of beauty, inspiration, and real joy along the way, and the album's open, natural sound is an ideal match for the material. Sky Blue Sky may find Wilco dipping their toes into roots rock again, but this doesn't feel like a step back so much as another fresh path for one of America's most consistently interesting bands. - Mark Deming / AMC

THE DEAD C - Future Artists (Ba Da Bing 053; USA) "In their first new album since 2003's The Damned and last year's double-CD greatest hits behemoth, Vain, Erudite and Stupid, New Zealand's The Dead C return with another uncompromising realization of the finest rock improvisation you'll ever hear. Future Artists contains five tracks of genius drone and barbarous clashing sounds. >From the first track, 'The AMM of Punk Rock' through to the last, 'Garage,' their intensity is unyielding, their inventiveness jaw-dropping. It's been twenty years, and The Dead C show no sign of losing their ability to express the surreal and undefined. Long may they prosper."

ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE & THE MELTING PARAISO U.F.O. - Crystal Rainbow Pyramid Under the Stars (Important 146; USA) "Brand new full length album from the Acid Mothers Temple & The Melting Paraiso UFO featuring their recent addition, female vocalist Kitagawa Hao. Recorded over a period of four months at The Acid Mothers Temple this is a very clean sounding and polished AMT. Frontman Kawabata Makoto admitted, only half joking, that this has the 'cleanest sound in AMT history!' More controlled than many of their speaker-destroying fuzz blasted speed guru jams, Crystal Rainbow Pyramid is focused on mystic ambient passages leading into Kawabata's head-heavy echo-riffs. Crystal Rainbow Pyramid is clearly one of the new classic AMT recordings. Prepare to have your mind blown slowly with evolving heavyweight jams and climactic peaks of exquisite ecstasy."
CD $14

ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE & THE MELTING PARAISO U.F.O. - Crystal Rainbow Pyramid Tour US & Canadian Tour 2007 (Important 147; USA) "Limited edition tour vinyl from the Acid Mothers Temple's recent US & Canadian tour. Brand new full-length album from the Acid Mothers Temple & The Melting Paraiso UFO featuring their recent addition, female vocalist Kitagawa Hao.

BORIS WITH MICHIO KURIHARA - Rainbow (Drag City 338; USA) "Boris with Michio Kurihara - a not unlikely combination, but who thought it would happen? Yet they play with such fantastic harmony. Rainbow is not just a perfect combination; it is a meeting place, with all players aligned in a singular cause - to make a album that elevates us and them. For such a formidable combine of noise-making rock and rollers, there is much open space in Rainbow. Sometimes akin to a topless chasm extending forth into the firmament, Rainbow is also a horizonless atmosphere, with Boris' spacious trio creation scorched by traces of Kurihara's skywriting guitar leads. Make no mistake: Rainbow is not without its moments of speaker-shredding intensity. Opening with the powerful cry of 'Rafflesia,' the album flashes through dynamic moments, with short pop songs providing interludes to lengthy expeditions. A glockenspiel glimmers in the distance and Takeshi and Wata take turns with the lead vocals. Muted intimacy is blasted open with a droning, tom-pounding jam. The colors shift gracefully throughout, giving lie to the album title. Is elegance a word for Boris? They array their rock with great care, and Kurihara's encyclopedic habit of guitar tones accompanies them with great sensitivity - ranging from Mesozoan stomps to near-static meditations to concise melodies rendered with precision? in other words, Rainbow is a heavy rock album with classically melodic aims - who doesn't love such a thing?"
CD $14

MICHIO KURIHARA - Sunset Notes (20/20/20 004; USA) "In 2005, Michio Kurihara released his first solo album, Sunset Notes, on Japan's respected Pedal Records. It was a long time coming for the guitarist, whose musicianship has enlightened such groups as Ghost, Damon & Naomi, White Heaven, The Stars and Yura Yura Teikoku. Kurihara is not one to indulge in the spotlight (in fact, he often literally ducks away from it), and that attitude reflects strongly in his guitar-playing style. Never does one hear a straight phrase from him. Instead, he often decorates around the edges, bringing forward a sense of a song's structure and identity through delicate brush strokes. The songs on Sunset Notes reflect this approach. While embracing a variety of styles and techniques (a gentle song sung by Pedal pop star Ai Aso is followed by a snakelike instrumental psych workout, which is followed by a Brancaesque tsunami of distorted guitars, and so on), the album maintains a focus around Kurihara's ingenious guitar playing. Sunset Notes is a mind-expanding, exciting album -- beautifully arranged, precisely executed, and an absolute thrill to hear."

JOHN CAGE//MORTON FELDMAN - Music Of Our Time: Music For Keyboard 1935-1948//Early Works [2 CD set] (New World 80664; USA) This double-CD set combines two of the key titles of Columbia Records's legendary "Music of Our Time" series curated by David Behrman: the rare 2 LP Cage Columbia album and Feldman's first rare Columbia single LP. Jeanne Kirstein's recording of Cage's early keyboard works remains a touchstone of Cagean interpretation notwithstanding the passage of time. Christian Wolff recalls, "I remember Cage saying that Jeanne Kirstein's playing caught the spirit in which the pieces were written at the time he wrote them-a kind of simple excitement and enthusiasm (also, surely, out of the discovery of the preparing of the piano and the great new sounds)."
The seminal 1959 Columbia LP that introduced Feldman's work to the listening public features historic performances that still resonate with passion and conviction more than four decades later. The works maybe divided into three categories: the earlier, precisely notated music (Extensions 1 for Violin and Piano, Extensions 4 for Three Pianos, Two Pieces for Two Pianos, Structures for String Quartet, Three Pieces for String Quartet); the first graphic notation pieces (Intersection 3 for Piano, Projection 4 for Violin and Piano); and the first free durational composition (Piece for Four Pianos).
To quote a prescient critic of the time, "[All eight works are] are full of spots, sparks and spangles of radiant color; a single note becomes an event of epical portent; the final result is to compact hours into seconds with an almost overwhelming intensity and depth of feeling."
John Cage: Two Pieces, Metamorphosis, Bacchanale, The Perilous Night, Tossed As It Is Untroubled, A Valentine Out of Season, Root of an Unfocus, Two Pieces for Piano, Prelude for Meditation, Music for Marcel Duchamp, Suite for Toy Piano, Dream
Morton Feldman: Piece for Four Pianos, Intersection 3 for Piano, Extensions 4 for Three Pianos, Two Pieces for Two Pianos, Projection 4 for Violin and Piano, Structures for String Quartet, Extensions 1 for Violin and Piano, Three Pieces for String Quartet

TRISTAN MURAIL - Gondwana/Desintegrations/Time And Again (Montaigne 782175; France) Gondwana is a defining musical composition of spectral music for large orchestra composed by Tristan Murail using simulated synthesis to create a harmonic interpolation between an orchestrally synthesized chord derived from a simulated bell sound and a chord derived from a trombone sound. This process is meant to evoke the shifting of continents and thus the piece is named after the former supercontinent Gondwana. The piece uses interpolation to make a smooth transformation on all musical parameters including spectral profile, envelope, and instrumental attacks (ibid, p.108). The bell sounds were created through a Frequency Modulation (FM) synthesis with a single modulator affecting five carriers to create five different harmonies, these being connected by interpolated chords. The components of the trombone's frequency spectrum was derived through a Fourier transform. The pieces long quiet or silent moments, being shaped in "long, seamlessly evolving paragraphs" evoking the geological processes that created the continent. The first opening slowly transforms a chord before turning to trills. - Wikipedia

MEMORIZE THE SKY [MATT BAUDER/ZACH WALLACE/AARON SIEGEL] - Memorize the Sky (482 Music 1053; USA) Featuring Matt Bauder on tenor sax, clarinets & percussion, Zach Wallace on bass, vibes & percussion and Aaron Siegel on drums, vibes & percussion. Both Matt Bauder & Aaron Siegel, have worked with and continue to collaborate with Anthony Braxton. Matt's first disc for 482 Music featured Mr. Braxton in the frontline of Matt's quartet. This trio has a rich, chamber jazz/classical sound. On "Raft of Stone", the trio features layers of drones with some buzzing clarinet, eerie floating percussion and a static bass line. Bowed percussion and/or bowed vibes are featured on "Lake of Light" while the ghost-like clarinet simmers in a dream-like haze. "Etch of Wood" has a most austere, calm Jimmy Giuffre-like feel with yawning bass clarinet, suspenseful contrabass and a bit of vibes punctuation. Aaron Siegel, who is currently playing in both Braxton's 12tet and sextet, has a unique approach to percussion, he seems to deal most often with textures and colors, and sounds splendid throughout this disc. Mr. Bauder also has a distinctive miminalist approach to his reeds, delicately placing each and every note and holding them for just as long as they are needed. Mr. Wallace fits perfectly as he navigates and shifts direction with an assured focus. Superb sounds from some serious new folks. - BLG

MIKE REED'S LOOSE ASSEMBLY - Last Year's Ghost (482 Music 1055; USA) Featuring Greg Ward on alto sax, Jason Adasiewicz on vibes, Tomeka Reid on cello, Josh Abrams on bass and Mike Reed on drums & compositions. This is Chicago-based drum wiz, Mike Reed's second disc for 482 Music, his first from last year was a series of duos. Mike has organized a great quintet of Chicago's best new musicians for his second effort. "Flowers" opens with a series of eerie bowed drones, yet by "Day of the Dead", the group get into a fine, quick spinning groove with some strong solos from the vibes and alto sax. All of the pieces here flow into the next one, so that mood continues and develops. "Afterthoughts" has a relaxed, late night sound with some nice Johnny Hodges-like sax from Greg Ward and a poignant cello solo from Tomeka Reid. There a re number of short pieces that just create series of strange mood changes, partially free with some intense bass burning at the center. The bass player, Josh Abrams, is most often at the center of each piece providing the great throb when need be, pumping and churning at times, a perfect partner for ace drummer Mike Reed. Another fine date from members of the Chicago underground scene. - BLG

THE FLATLANDS COLLECTIVE [JORRIT DIJKSTRA/JEB BISHOP/FRED LONBERG-HOLM] - Gnomade (Skycap 35; Germany) Featuring Jorrit Dijkstra on alto sax & lyricon, James Falzone on clarinet, Jeb Bishop on trombone, Fred Lonberg-Holm on cello, Jason Roebke on bass and Tim Mulvenna on drums. The Flatlands Collective is an international group that brings some of Chicago's hottest improvisers together with a remarkable alto saxophonist and composer from the lively Dutch improvisation scene. Dijkstra and Chicago improvisors Jeb Bishop, Jim Baker and Kent Kessler had a successful musical encounter in Chicago's Candlestick Maker in 2003. They found a common ground in a more trans-national way of improvising, using open forms, humor, and a looser interpretation of the American jazz tradition. Dijkstra met James Falzone during their time at New England Conservatory. He admired the Fred Lonberg-Holm's kaleidoscopic musicianship and knew Tim Mulvenna as one of the most versatile drummers in Chicago. After projects in Paris, Vancouver, Edinburgh and Boston, The Flatlands Collective is another example of Dijkstra's interest in uniting musicians from different cities in the world who share similar improvisation ideas. Dijkstra says: "I believe that the landscape in which you grow up has an effect on how your music sounds. This is what's so interesting about jazz: musicians in New York, Barcelona, Moscow, Shanghai or Addis Ababa play this music, but there is always a distinctive local interpretation." And he adds: "I called this group The Flatlands Collective after the landscape heritage I share as a Dutchman with the Chicago players."

1000 [JAN KLARE/BART MARIS/WILBERT DE JOODE/MICHAEL VATCHER] - Unplayable (Skycap 41; Germany) This band is called 1000 (thousand) because it was born in 2004 in a series of concerts called 1000 years of jazz, because 1000 is a strong number and because it is as digital as can be. The quartet's line up has various roots. Wilbert de Joode and Jan Klare work together since the early 90's in different groups, most notably the Dutch/English/German quartet EUREKA, that existed from 1994 -98, in which also Michael Vatcher was a featured guest a number of times. After a commission for the Jazzfestival Munster in 1997 the trio Klare, de Joode, Vatcher developed, that worked in non-regular intervals. Bart Maris himself had worked with de Joode and Vatcher on a number of occasions and had been introduced to Klare in 2001. They soon found out, that they had a lot of sympathy for each other's playing and thinking - so putting a band together was a logical step. The basic repertoire of 1000 consisted of interpretations of classical compositions to begin with - for example from Gregorian music, Bach and Wagner. Then Jan Klare began to write pieces that concentrated on the special characters in the band. The 1000 line up may perhaps remind one of the Ornette Coleman Quartet - which isn't completely wrong, but 1000 sounds very different. Composition and its blending with improvisation are the prominent characteristics in this setting. The instruments change leading and accompanying roles constantly, the music stays solid at all times.

THREE NEW DISCS FROM THOSE FINE FOLKS AT THE pfMENTUM LABEL:

STEUART LIEBIG/MINIM - Sulphur (pfMentum 046; USA) Minim features Andrew Pask on clarinets, Sara Schoenbeck on bassoon, Steuart Liebig on unprepared & unprepared contrabass guitars & compositions and Brad Dutz on drums, percussion & marimba. This is L.A. bassist and composer, Steuart Liebig's 6th disc for pfMentum and the second with his quartet Minim. 'Sulphur' consists of two long pieces and one relatively short one. "Kaleidoscope" is almost 45-minutes in length and contains 23 miniature parts. Minim is a unique chamber quartet for clarinets & bassoon with Steuart's brilliant custom-made contrabass guitars and pfMentum leader, Brad Dutz on drums. Each miniature features different solos, duos, trios and the quartet and each is demanding in one way or another. Sometimes spacious, sometimes busy but always thoughtfully written and well-played. "Cherry BlossomÉ" is based on a haiku and has some quirky yet playful music, moving from duos to quartet in sections and is quietly fascinating. "Necrological Pieties" seems to be free yet minimal but it fits together in a way that is cautious but difficult to describe. Another unique offering from Steuat Liebig & Minim. - BLG

JIM CONNOLLY & THE GOVE COUNTY STRING QUARTET - self/titled (pfMentum 044; USA) The Gove County String Quartet consist of Sally Barr & Laura Hackstein on violins, Kirsten Monke on viola and Jim Connolly on contrabass & all but one of the compositions. This is rather quaint, yet still somehow engaging string quartet music that both melodic and thoughtful. They play a lovely version "Across the Universe" by The Beatles within another slightly darker piece called "Pinocchio". Melodic yet striking and often unfolding like a story being told, or a set of short stories. Modern without being too difficult or too smart for its own good. Similar to Tin Hat Trio at times. - BLG
CD $12

THE TRANSHUMANS - Into The Maelstrom (pfMentum 047; USA) The Transhumans are a trio featuring Justin Cassidy & Patrick Rodriguez on electronics and Bob Sterling on drums & electronics. This disc was recorded live in the studio and consists of three main parts. Part One is called "Adrift" and it is an apt title for soft layers of drifting, queasy electronics. As the layers of electronics become denser, Bob's powerful drums swirl at the center uplifting the trio to new heights. Part Two is called "Descent" and Mr. Sterling's strong tom-tom (samples) is again at the center of the emerging storm. The electronics build and erupt together into an engaging mass of mesmerizing sounds, deeper and darker as it evolves. Bob's drums often hold things together or anchor the electronic soundscape as they slowly evolve. Part Three is entitled "Drunken Boat", it is a slower, more spaciously rocking piece. There is something quite hypnotic about this piece, I especially dig the goofy alien, spoken word voice that narrates and tells a rather twisted story - BLG

BRUCE LEE GALLANTER (BLG) REVIEWS RECENT BOMBSHELLS!

ROSCOE MITCHELL & THE TRANSATLANTIC ART ENSEMBLE With EVAN PARKER & BARRY GUY - Composition /Improvisation Nos. 1, 2 & 3 (ECM 1872; USA) The Transatlantic Art Ensemble features Roscoe Mitchell, soprano sax; Evan Parker, tenor and soprano saxes; Anders Svanoe, alto and baritone saxes; Corey Wilkes, trumpet, flugelhorn; John Rangecroft, clarinet; Neil Metcalfe, flute; Nils Bultmann, viola; Philipp Wachsmann, violin; Marcio Mattos, cello; Craig Taborn, piano; Jaribu Shahid, double bass; Barry Guy, double bass; Tani Tabbal & Paul Lytton, drums & percussion.
This was recorded live in Munich in September of 2004 and it was conducted and directed by the great Roscoe Mitchell, who also plays soprano sax. This is an extraordinary work for a distinguished one-time 14-piece ensemble. It does not sound like anything we've heard from Mr. Mitchell and is engaging for the entire 79-minute length. It appears to be a sectional work in which different subgroups emerge and interact. The first section features a spacious segment for just strings and flute, which is quite haunting. The second section features both percussionists who work superbly together, spinning a sprawling web closely connected drum dialogue. The third and longest section has some lusciously written ensemble playing that blends old and new jazz styles with modern classical quirkiness seamlessly. It is quite a breathtaking kaleidoscope of ever-changing colors/ideas, peppered with a few fine solos. John Rangecroft plays wonderful clarinet and sounds as if he is quoting Gershwin on part four, as the rest of the ensemble swirls slowly and mysteriously around him. Roscoe Mitchell remains and resounds as one of the grand men of modern composition, here utilizing the talents of an outstanding international (American & British, mostly) ensemble. This is an immensely satisfying effort on many counts! - BLG

LOUIS SCLAVIS - L'imparfait des langues (ECM 1954; USA) Featuring Louis Sclavis on clarinets & soprano sax & most compositions, Marc Baron on alto sax, Maxime Delpierre on guitars, Paul Brousseau on keyboards, sampling, electronics & guitars and Francois Merville on drums. This is French clarinet master, Louis Sclavis' 7th disc for ECM and like on all previous CD's, the personnel and concept is different. Sclavis has organized yet another wonderful quintet, with a cast of great new players none of whom I am previously familiar with. Sclavis has often worked with acoustic musicians in the past, but not so much here. "Premier Imparfait "a"" opens with Louis' lone clarinet bathed by electric keyboard and mysterious samples. Sclavis' rich and haunting bass clarinet sounds splendid on "L'Idee du Dialecte" with some coy, quiet electric guitar and exquisite drums, and is soon joined by some fine alto sax from Marc Baron. Maxime Delpierre's guitar sounds great bending notes every which way as Brousseau plays bass lines on his keyboard, I believe. Sclavis writes intricate pieces that keep these musicians on their toes throughout. On "Premier Imparfait "B"", he has the clarinet playing one line with the rhythm team as the guitar plays complex lines around the charted parts. Each piece features a tricky chart and/or enchanting melodies that are difficult to forget. "Archeologie" is an uplifting duo for clarinet and drums that lifts off into a great groove. This entire 56-minute disc is inspired and engaging throughout and is another winner from ever-briliant Louis Sclavis and his trusty collabotors. - BLG

BOLIVAR ZOAR [MARYCLARE BRYZTWA/AVA MENDOZA/THERESA WONG] - self/titled (self-produced; USA) Featuring MaryClare Brzytwa on guitar, flute & voice, Ava "Hound Dog" Mendoza on guitars & voice and Theresa Wong on cello, guitar & voice. This Bay Area-based trio played at The Stone a few weeks ago and MaryClare has also played here at DMG with Antoine Berthiuame and both will be playing at The Stone this Wednesday (5/30/07) for a CD release set for their new disc on Ambiances Magnetiques. Bolivar Zoar is an odd trio of mostly three guitars or two guitars and cello. Their songs are pretty twisted, tight and well-played. They rock in their own quirky way with layers of intricate guitars, some distorted and some tuned in odd ways. On "Your Maniacal Face" they all sing in strange harmonies like the Roches on acid and occasionally scream and it just makes me smile. There are three group improvisations here and each is bizarre, yet focused and bits of bent vocals. "With a Swish of the Lion's Tail!", has a rather catchy vocal refrain and a great Beefheartian groove. Sadly it is too short, but fun nonetheless. "You're Leaving Me" has a sad theme yet again the arrangements are surprisingly quirky and quite unique. "Animals in Captivity" has some rather interesting lyrics, that me feel like each of us are like those animals in captivity in more ways that we would like to imagine. This is one of the most enchanting oddities I've heard recently so why not check these three creative women yourself!?! - BLG

BRUCE COATES/JOHN EDWARDS/DAVID RYAN - Warwick And London 2003 (Octogonal 01; UK) Featuring Bruce Coates on soprano & alto saxes, John Edwards on contrabass and David Ryan on b-flat & bass clarinets. If you don't recognize the name of the Bruce Coates, I wouldn't be surprised unless you are a Paul Dunmall completist, since he and Dunmall do have one duo soprano sax disc, as well as a quartet disc both on the Duns label. I am even less familiar with clarinetist David Ryan, but many of us should know of the great bassist John Edwards from the 30+ discs he has appeared on Emanem, Matchless, Foghorn and Slam.
This disc was recorded at two different churches in May of 2003. John Edwards has become one of the finest improvising bassists in the UK over the past decade and sounds wonderful here in the center with two strong reeds players at his side. The warm, rich tone of his acoustic bass sounds great with the tones of the bass clarinet and soprano sax, their ranges are quite similar. On "Warwick II", the bowed bass blends perfectly with the soprano and bass clarinet. On the epic-length "Warwick III", the trio erupts intensely a few times during the piece, sounding as if they are about to explode at times. "London I" has a more quirky, spirited feel and is quite clearly recorded. There is strong, playful spirit as the reeds circle each other quickly while Edwards' bass explores similar terrain and tonal territory. This is a fine example of how extraordinary British improvised music has become no matter if you've heard of these under-recognized giants or not. - BLG

ALAN WILKINSON/JOHN EDWARDS/STEVE NOBLE - Obliquity (Bo Weavil 23; UK) "Obliquity is a free jazz record, if you'll forgive the use of such a hoary, old fashioned phrase. Its scorching, heads-down momentum, rhythm and drive places it in direct line of descent from the fierce originators of the genre: Ayler, Sanders, Graves, Frank Wright. It also swings. At times it dances. Obliquity is a free jazz record through the prism of the improvisational movement in Europe, though. This is no attempt at polite revivalism or looking back/up to the 1960s. Wilkinson/Edwards/Noble are producing new, vital music of and for now. John Edwards pins down the trio with precision and energy -- his tremendous internal rhythm on display to full effect throughout. Alan Wilkinson is a ferocious improviser, probably best known for membership of the demon Hession /Wilkinson/Fell trio. Obliquity features full-spectrum Wilkinson: takenoprisoners sax, squeals, coughs, sustained improvisational experimentation and east London tribal chanting. Steve Noble is an upright drummer with a surgeon's accuracy, his crisp percussion work has accompanied dancers, funksters, poets and tuba players. But he's not played better than here: great power, allied to grace, a subtle touch and solid time -- the drumming drives the music on to real heights."

WILLIE McBLIND [JON CATLER] - Find My Way Back Home (FreeNote; USA) "Willie McBlind is a psychedelic electric Delta blues band led by micro-tonalist Jon Catler, the world's leading Harmonic guitarist, and Babe Borden, known for her ability to sing any pitch, combining forces in this band to present a dynamic and powerful stage show. Willie McBlind is a band that can satisfy true blues fans and also appeal to a brand new audience. Primal rhythms and ear-catching melodies lead to cavernous chords which, when sustained, can evoke clouds over the Delta. The forces of nature are brought into play and evolve into an overwhelming live experience that draws from a deep tradition as it heads towards the future. Artwork by legendary San Francisco poster artist Victor Moscoso."

LJOVA [LEV ZHURBIN] - VJOLA: World On Four Strings (Kapustnik; USA) LEV ZHURBIN, a Russian-born violist who works under the name Ljova, seems to be everywhere lately. He has arranged music for the Kronos Quartet and for Yo-Yo Ma's Silk Road Ensemble, composed soundtracks for a handful of films and turned up regularly in New York freelance ensembles.
For this debut CD Mr. Zhurbin, who is 27 and lives in New York, has taken a route increasingly favored by both pop and classical musicians: he recorded the music mostly in his home studio and released it on his own label. Except for an eerily atmospheric cover of Bjork's Army of Me and an arrangement of a Romanian folk song, the works here are originals. And except for an accordion line - played by Michael Ward Bregeman - in one piece, Mr. Zhurbin does all the playing, multitracking his viola so that throaty melodies are supported by pizzicato rhythms, lush chordal figures and counterpoint. - NY TIMES

MICHELLE WEBB - Figures At The Base Of A Crucifixion [CD-EP] (self released; USA) Recognized as an incredibly creative and innovative guitarist, improviser, and producer in the fields of rock, jazz and experimental music, New Mexico-based musician Michelle Webb is a electrifying and original guitarist. On this recording she plays 14-string fretless guitar, standard electric guitar, electric bass, percussion, electronics. A restless collaborator who constantly seeks the most diverse and personally challenging contexts for her music, Webb not only produces and contributes to a large number of recorded projects, she performs frequently throughout the USA with several regular groupings as well as solo guitar concerts and concerts of freely improvised music with a host of diverse instrumentalists. Some of her musical influences are: Herbie Hancock, Elliot Sharp, Bill Laswell, Steve Lacy, Fred Frith, Terry Riley, Jim O'Rourke, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Diamanda Galas, Sonny Sharrock, John Zorn, David Torn, Bill Frisell and Cecil Taylor.
Michelle Webb has helped unfetter the guitar from the conventions of genre-bound techniques, but her instrumental virtuosity and technological breakthroughs are always deployed in the service of deep and immediate personal expression. Some of her musical sources include traditional blues, East Asian, Classical North Indian and Hawaiian music, free jazz, free improvisation, American steel-string concert guitar, rock, jazz-fusion and 20th century classical, but like any probing artist she also draws creatively from other abiding interests, which for Webb includes web design and experimental cinema. Since taking up the guitar at the age of 5, Webb has built an ever-mounting reputation as a very talented musician and composer. She composed music for the film Hospice directed by Ken Forestal and Silent Movie directed by Michael Torrez and the animated short film Beatless Nick she has also worked on creating cutting edge music for interactive presentations for America Online and video game giant Cyberlore Studios.

SECRETARY [PAULA HENDERSON] - Secret Life Of Secretary (Secret Life 01; USA) Secretary is the solo project of "Moist" Paula Henderson, baritone sax player from Moisturizer and Burnt Sugar. Sounds to me like layers of mellow bari sax, elegant electronics and some quaint drum machine rhythms. "Mofongo Raincheck" has that groovy, lounge-jazz sort of vibe while "Instant Messenger Dream" has drifting, alien vocals and soothing sax wandering around. Paula does a good job of setting up a variety of fun grooves made from different samples, she then adds her somber bari sax to the mix which always feels just right for laid-back listening. This reminds me of music that the Residents might play at the intermission of one of their gigs, as well as some of the better new wave electronic bands that were around in the 80's. Definitely fun and just a bit strange. - BLG

DAVID KENDALL'S DIFFERENCE QUARTET - Kendall's Difference Quartet (Macro-Eden 04; USA) Bay Area-based quartet featuring David Kendall on oscillator, Johnny Chang on violin, Cat Lamb on viola and Dan Clucas on trumpet. The only name I recognize here is trumpeter Dan Clucas who has a couple of discs out on pfMentum. This consists of one 30+ minute piece and was composed and conducted by David Kendall. It begins with eerie droning trumpet, strings and is soon joined by that oscillator. The droning slowly twists and turns and has that microtonal-like haze that you either love or eventually get tired of. I feel as if I am about to drown in the somewhat disturbing waves that are washing over me, yet I patiently wait and float as the gravity alone holds me down, the mildly dark sounds flowing around me. - BLG

MADAGASCAR - Goodbye East, Goodbye West (Western Vinyl 45; USA) "Goodbye East, Goodbye West is a refinement and growth of Madagascar's unique sound. Each track uses crisscrossing accordion, saw, and glockenspiel melodies; anchored by bass, acoustic guitar, and percussion. These instrumental elements are perfectly punctuated with beautiful wordless vocals."

MEG BAIRD - Dear Companion (Drag City 340; USA) "There was a time when traditional music was just folk - a time when folk wasn't hyphened up with words like psych and rock and pop. It was just there on its lonesome, like a lone girl and guitar. That's what you hear on Meg Baird's Dear Companion. Her lyrical singing and songwriting imbues the sound of the psych-folk group (see, there we go again) Espers, but this is Meg's solo debut. Traditional songs are of such great age that it is not known where they began. They are lost to time, for a world to pick on and interpret. With songs like 'The Cruelty of Barbary Allen,' 'Willie O' Winsbury,' and the title track, Meg interprets the old airs with voice and fingerstyle picking. Mixing traditional songs with her original compositions lends the album its variety. She further mixes it up by reaching for some deep cuts from a few records most of us haven't yet heard. Sure, there's a Jimmy Webb song, we're good with that - but we've got Meg to thank for all our future listens to Fraser & DeBolt (whose delightful 'The Waltze Of the Tennis Players' is covered) and Chris Thompson. And her cover of The New Riders of the Purple Sage song 'All I Ever Wanted' will make your heart explode in a way the NRPS version never did - gently."

LIMTED VINYL RELEASES ON 'EHSE' !

HARRIUS - The Cotton Ring [Ltd Ed LP] (Ehse 05; USA) Jenny Graf Sheppard (Metalux) and Chiara Giovando (PCPCG) are Harrius. The duo have created a strange and perplexing recording that straddles the line between psychedelic folk and electronic improv via BBC Radiophonic Workshop. Never resting on either side of the fence, "The Cotton Ring" explores areas of singer-songwriter domain while being overtaken by electronics. Far removed from any "noise" record professing the same instrumentation; Harrius uses vocals and guitar to blend in and out analog electronic hiccups and tidal waves. A carefully sculpted composition for an upcoming "psychedelic western", which is fitting, since at times Harrius hints at Ennio Morricone's more psychedelic period. You can be in your own movie if you're quick on the draw, this is a limited to 500. - chuck bettis / DMG

ANDY HAYLECK - Two Gong/Wire Pieces [Ltd Ed LP] (Ehse 06; USA) Andy Hayleck (Trockenies) lets you know exactly what you are in for with the title of this LP. Total bare bones, Hayleck applys a thin wire attached to a gong and bows it into euphoria. Baltimore is the home of oddball instrumentation (among other things) like this and Hayleck adds to the freak potpurri. The drones created with his self-made instrument create an ambience that seduces the listener into meditation. This dynamic tone cluster conjures up an imaginary collaboration between Tibetan Monks throat singing collaborating with LaMonte Young. A perfect companion for the Trockenies LP. Limited to 500, get them before they are gong, I mean gone - chuck bettis / DMG

SNACKS - Natural Snacks [Ltd Ed 10" LP] (Ehse 08; USA) This beautifully designed 10" picture disc packs a lunch of serious food for thought. Synths spits and sputters, drums, bangs and grooves, serving up a tasty treat. Tom Boram (Leprechaun Catering) on synth, teams up with Dan Breen (Trockeneis) on drums bringing you the creative absurdity one would expect on a steady diet of Jean-Jacques Perry, Free Jazz, and to put it in one word, Baltimore. Side A serves up a dish of exotica ala Charm City style. Blending together "Popcorn" synths, surf guitar spurts, and beats that blend Drumbo's urgency and Han Bennick's sense of humor, bringing you the sound of all your records mashed into one and more!
Side B brings a sound collage of vocals cut ups and beats, that would fool a trained ear into thinking it was the most perplexing DJ mix ever. Throw this on a party for those who snub dance music and you will see them shake their booty, serious beat miners would be trying to figure out Breen's odd but hypnotizing drumming. . Their live shows are not to be missed either. Quite an event with both Boram & Breen serving snacks that are a culinary cuisine that even the most inventive chef would not realize, before they play, then they give the audience the audio plate. Yet with two delectable sides, it will leave you craving for more, for these Snacks are addictive. Definitely the right amount of cooks in the kitchen. Only 500 made, get them while their hot! - chuck bettis / DMG

TROCKENIES - 5025 AD [Ltd Ed LP] (Ehse 04; USA) How many groups boast of dry ice as their main instrument? Trockeneis press, grind, slap and overall exploit the sonic capabilities of the aforementioned medium. Others may try to emulate the sound, this group base their entire recording on ice and vocals! Consisting of Paul Neidhardt, Catherine Pancake (Dorkestra/ Music In The Key Of Zero), Dan Breen (Snacks), and Andy Hayleck on dry ice and objects accompanied by Audrey Chen's voice, bring one of the most eerie improv records you may ever hear! You can literally hear the objects scream while being pressed upon the ice! Chen's acrobatic vocalizations blend seamlessly with the squeals and scrapes of the material forced upon the burning cold of the ice. Slowly the brooding ambience fills the air, wraps its icy fingers around your neck and lets you know the power of the new ice age. Fans of Joan La Barbara, Goblin (played at half speed), and Antartica (the actual place) take note. Only 500 made, don't be left out of the cold! - chuck bettis / DMG

KARMIC SOCIETY - Journey (World in Sound 2002; Germany) "The quartet was founded in 2005, in Heidelberg (Germany) and plays with a great level of proficiency and on authentic equipment to get their analog 70's sound. Mostly instrumental jams, the Karmic Society reflects the traditional Krautrock jam-spirit of Kraan, Message, Epitaph, combined with US west coast influences, but also progressive fusion rock elements like Mahavishnu's McLaughlin, Chick Corea or Keith Emerson. Besides a unique rhythm section, you can look forward to beautiful melodies and varying compositions fitting perfectly to a festival sunny afternoon. A massive, swirling Hammond organ by Winnie Rimbach-Sator (also plays keys with Treacle People) is in communication with excessive Stratocaster guitar solos melting into unexpected orgies of sounds. This album contains 4 originals and 4 improvised covers tunes that are 'Dark Star' (Grateful Dead), 'Witches Moon' (Quicksilver Messenger Service), a heavy 'Spacepatrol Orion' version (authorized by Peter Thomas -- sci-fi sound from the mid-60s) and 'Yoo Doo Right' (CAN) as a 17 min. version with stunning moog space parts and tribal voodoo percussions. The production sounds natural and grew from a free concept to a strong compact album of 65 mins intense music. (btw: 3/4 of the band support the US group Dragonwyck at live shows). The CD (digipack) contains nice artwork and an 8 p. booklet. Highly recommended to sophisticated rock/fusion/jam listeners who like intense organ vs. guitar battles and to those who like to enjoy well produced experimental sounds to test their audiophile stereo equipment."

HISTORIC & ARCHIVAL RECORDINGS, RESTOCKS & REISSUES:

NOAH HOWARD With ARTHUR DOYLE/NORRIS JONES [SIRONE] - The Black Ark (Bo Weavil 24; UK) "It's no understatement that The Black Arc is one of the most sought-after underground free jazz releases of all time. The original Freedom vinyl LP and the brief Japanese CD reissue were criminally out-of-print and impossible to find. Both versions popped up on internet auction sites once in a blue moon but when they did they always fetched insanely astronomical prices This record simply is THE BOMB -- a perfect combination of Noah's soulful compositions and playing, infused with plenty of sweet/sour/in/out forms and shapes from the incredible line-up assembled for this release. Plus we get to experience Arthur Doyle's outrageous debut on a recording session, increasing the playing and feeling to an intense level throughout. And dig the spaced out afro-delay on Juma's percussion (yes, that Juma Santos from Hendrix's killer Woodstock show of the same year, and Coltrane's Olatunji concert disc). All of the players on this record- including Earl Cross trumpet, Leslie Waldron piano, Sirone bass, and Mohammed Ali drums - combine to make it a CLASSIC and its esteemed reputation IS well earned." --Oren Ambarchi

ORNETTE COLEMAN/PAUL BLEY QUINTET With DON CHERRY/CHARLIE HADEN/BILLY HIGGINS - Complete Live At The Hillcrest 1958 (Gambit 69272; EEC) All 8 cuts from both albums - the 4 cuts form Live at The Hillcrest Club released on Inner City label LP and later Musicdisc CD, and the other 4 cuts from the withdrawn Coleman Classics Vol 1 LP released on Paul Bley's IAI label - a total of 5 Ornette originals and three covers.
Just as the famous 1940-41 Jerry Newman recordings at Minton's and Clark Monroe's Uptown House captured the transition from Swing to Bebop, the music on this CD (compiled here in one set for the first time ever) marks one of the first steps from Bebop into what would soon be called 'Free Jazz'. The whole quintet consisted of modern players working with the same concept: a freer way of playing Jazz, which transcended the strict confines of melody, harmony and rhythm. They would create a whole new idiom by constructing music via the interplay of simultaneous collective improvisation. These concerts are the only known recorded works of Paul Bley with Ornette Coleman, Don Cherry or Billy Higgins, both separately and as a unit. Even though it may not have been a regular unit or a stylistically defined group, the quintet heard on these historic Hillcrest recordings shows a highly creative level, and transmits a contagious excitement and a continuous search for new musical ideas and new ways to express themselves that makes this music as impressive today as it was when it was first performed nearly fifty years ago.

JOE HARRIOTT - Killer Joe [2 CD set] (Cherry Red/Giant Steps 20; UK) Without question, Jamaican-born alto sax man Joe Harriott stands tall as a genuine British Modern Jazz icon. Indeed, Joe Harriott ranks along side of such local Giant Killers as Victor Feldman, Tubby Hayes, Ronnie Scott and Stan Tracey. A product of Kingston's famed Alpha Boys' School, Joe Harriott was just 22 years old when, in May 1951, he arrived in England from Jamaica. A complete unknown, it took less than a couple of years for Joe to establish himself as a major player. Killer Joe vividly documents Harriott's emergence on the London scene. From that time when such popular West End haunts as Carnaby Street's The Sunset Club and The Feldman Club located at 100 Oxford Street erroneously billed "the new alto sax discovery" as Joe Harriet. Despite an early admiration for Charlie Parker, Joe wasn't a slavish copyist. The truth was you couldn't mistake Joe for any other alto player. At this juncture in his career, his exuberant approach to the standard bop vocabulary set him apart from the rest of the pack. Spiced with elements of his Caribbean background Joe created a truly joyous noise underpinned with passionate rhythmic flair.
Killer Joe features Joe as both a soloist and as an integrgral part of the highly popular Tony Kinsey Trio and Ronnie Scott's shortlived Big Band. Sadly, the latter's only recorded legacy amounted to a brace of Dizzy Reece compositions Bang and The Big Fist, the much-recorded bop anthem A Night In Tunisia plus a Scott feature With Every Breath I Take. All four titles are included on Killer Joe. rom the start, Joe exhibited an insatiable hunger to expand his musical knowledge and felt comfortable in all manner of musical nvironments. Joe was just as likely to be heard sitting in with leading traditional jazz players as he was with the capital's Cecil Geesuited odernists. Examples of Joe's versatility being demonstrated here by his appearance with trumpeter Kenny Baker's Jazz oday Unit (Blues In Three) and on the ultra rare Akee Blues - one of his own originals - which he recorded with Buddy Pipps' Highlifers exclusively for the African market. Then there's a session with Strings: the first of its kind undertaken by a British jazz soloist. Killer Joe amounts to the first major chapter in the career of Joe Harriott.

FINALLY! ALL OF THOSE GREAT DISCS FROM THIS HEAT ARE REISSUED:

THIS HEAT - Deceit (ReR/This Is 2; UK) [The remastered edition from the box set] The 2nd LP, originally released on Rough Trade in 1981. This is the one for me. One of the most blistering, intense, and overtly political albums whose cries of intolerance still ring as loudly and clearly today as they did back then. Nothing on this record has aged badly in my opinion. A deep emotional exorcism, a true desert island disc, a classic. - Mikey IQ Jones.
CD $16

THIS HEAT - Made Available: The John Peel Sessions (ReR/This Is 4; UK) [The remastered edition from the box set] As I've mentioned elsewhere, the first half of this disc features (IMHO) superior versions of the key tracks from the first LP, save for "24 Track Loop." The 2nd half is made up of improvised pieces, and while it's interestin to hear the group in such a raw context, the improvs are probably the weakest material in the box - and the Charleses agree in the box's liner notes. Essential if only to hear the true power and intensity this band had as a live entity, and in sparklingly clear recording quality to boot - Mikey IQ Jones.
CD $16

THIS HEAT - Repeat (ReR/This Is 5; UK) [The remastered edition from the box set] The posthumous "remix" record, if you will. Three longish cuts (each averages at about 15 to 20 mins) of instrumental loop-based experiments, the first of which being an AMAZING 20-min workout of the 24 Track Loop" material, in which the group dissects every element of the piece, letting it play through every nuance and mixing-board trick at their disposal. Amazingly, the piece holds up to such scrutiny even stretched to 4 times its original length. The second cut, "Metal," is a nice assembly of gamelan-like percussion loops augmented by field recordings of the group outside their Cold Storage studio... quite unlike anything else the group had ever recorded. The disc ends with the 33rpm version of the drone "Graphic/Varispeed," originally the b-side to the "Health & Efficiency" single. - Mikey IQ Jones.
CD $16

THIS HEAT - Live 80/81 (ReR/This Is 6; UK) [The remastered edition from the box set] Here's the gem in the crown! A disc of previously unreleased live tapes, assembled and mixed by the Charleses and sequenced to replicate the setlist from the group's live show. While the recordings do not always bear the most sparkling sound quality, much like the Crimson Club discs, what they lack in sonics they make up with in sheer power and feeling. A few pieces on the disc are also not found anywhere else in the box. A nice addition to the discography. - Mikey IQ Jones.

DOG FACED HERMANS - Mental Blocks For All Ages (Mississippi 15; USA) "Dog Faced Hermans was a five-piece band whose style could be described as anarcho-artpunk incorporating folk and noise influences as well as unorthodox instrumentation. Hailing from Scotland, DFH came out of the herky-jerky Glasgow scene with bands like Stretchheads, Dawson and Archbishop Kebab. Mental Blocks was their 2nd full length LP, released in 1991 on the band's own Demon Radge label. They had 3 LPs, 1 12" EP and a collection of EPs, comp tracks and splits before signing on with Alternative Tentacles for their last two LPs. Guitarist Andy Moor has been a part of The Ex for about 12 years now, and bassist Colin McLean is now playing as part of The Ex's live set. DFH has influenced bands such as Errase Errata, Veronica Lipgloss, God Is My Co-Pilot, and many more. Mental Blocks is considered one of their (if not the) best and hardest to find albums. Remastered by members of the band for improved clarity over the original release."
LP $11

ZWEISTEIN - Trip Flip Out Meditation [3 CD set] (Captain Trip 583-84-85; Japan) First ever CD reissue of one of the most extreme Krautrock-era albums ever made. Originally released by Philips Germany in 1970, the triple LP edition came in an elaborate 'mirror' sleeve and has been near-impossible to find for 35+ years. Zweistein were a trio of Jacques Dorian, Suzanne Doucet and Diane Doucet. Heavily anticipated. "Musically, 'Trip, Flip Out, Meditation' is largely a sound collage containing massive amounts of studio effects wizardry. Listeners are bombarded with an hour and forty-six minutes (106 minutes) worth of effects-laden voices, natural sounds, electronic effects, organ, guitar, drums and other instruments. The side-long compositions are virtually strewn together avant-garde improvisations in which anything goes. It is this fact which acts as a catch 22 and splits the Krautrock fan base into two factions. First there are those who hail the album as a masterpiece due to its avant-garde nature, wild approach, and inherent reference to a drug trip. Then there are those who pass the album off as a complete timewaster due to its evident amateur musicianship, lack of direction and avant-garde nature." --Doug Brotherton
3 CD set for $78

ODIN - Live at the Maxim (Long Hair 057; EEC) "This live concert from September 1971 is an impressive documentation of Odin during the band's identification process. Odin, well-known because of their album on the famous Vertigo label (1972), did a lot of concerts during their lifetime. Founded in summer 1971, Odin played, besides their own material, songs by their favorites, for example, Frank Zappa, King Crimson, Neil Young and others. Digitally remastered from the original tapes. The booklet comes with personal liner notes by bandleader Jeff Beer and a lot of rare and previous unseen photos. With a total playing time of 70 minutes, this is recommended to all fans of the genre!"
CD $21

ODIN - SWF Session 1973 (Long Hair 056; EEC) "Founded in summer 1971 in Germany by German organ player Jeff Beer, Dutch guitarist Rob Terstall and English bass player Ray Brown and drummer Stuart Fordham, ODIN is one of German rock music history's greatest mysteries. Information about the band is rather rare and with this CD all lovers of progressive rock music of the early '70s will be excellently informed about this great band. The music is played by well educated musicians who play a high level guitar- and organ-dominated progressive rock. After the release of their one and only album on the famous Vertigo label in 1972, ODIN were invited by German radio SWF to produce 4 titles for a radio show in February 1973. A 12-minute version of 'Life is Only' and a 11-minutes version of the Zappa composition 'King Kong' are fine examples of ODIN's terrific musicianship. 'Oh No' (6:30) and the Terstall composition 'Turnpike Lane' make the radio recording session complete. In addition to the radio recordings there is a bonus track from a concert in autumn 1971 titled 'Make Up Your Mind' (13:10) which is an impressive example of the band's early works. All titles are digitally remastered. The booklet contains a comprehensive band history with a lot of rare photos. Don't miss this true gem."
