ANTHONY BRAXTON 12+1 TET - 9 Compositions (Iridium) 2006 [9 CD + 1 DVD box set] (Firehouse12 04-03-001; USA) A nine-CD-plus-one-DVD box set documenting what Time Out New York called "last Spring's epochal run" at New York's Iridium Jazz Club in March 2006. Described by Braxton as "THE point of definition in my work thus far," these concerts featured the world premieres of Compositions 350 through 358, the final works in his Ghost Trance Music series, recorded over the course of this rare four-night stand on an American stage. Included with the music is a Braxton documentary, interspersed with live concert footage, and an extensive collection of essays, commentary and biographical information. This definitive set is being released in coordination with Braxton's return engagement at Iridium March 29th-April 1st, 2007.
Musicians: Mary Halvorson - electric guitar; Nicole Mitchell - flute, alto and bass flutes, piccolo, voice; Sara Schoenbeck - bassoon, suona; Reut Regev - trombone, flugelbone; Carl Testa - acoustic bass, bass clarinet; Anthony Braxton - alto, soprano, and sopranino saxophones, clarinet, Eb contralto clarinet; James Fei - alto and soprano saxophones, clarinet, bass clarinet; Andrew Raffo Dewar - soprano and c-melody saxophones, clarinet; Jay Rozen - tuba, euphonium; Stephen H. Lehman - alto and sopranino saxophones; Jessica Pavone - viola, violin; Aaron Siegel - percussion, vibraphone; Taylor Ho Bynum - cornet, flugelhorn, trumpbone, piccolo and bass trumpets, shell.
"Going to hear Anthony Braxton in Times Square is a unique event," writes trumpeter/composer Dave Douglas in his commentary on the second night's first set. "The quizzical looks of tourists who just happened to come down for this set and seem to be asking themselves if this is some sort of introduction to something else or if in fact this is the thing itself. Rapt listeners aware that we are in for a very special treat. The tension was palpable, and it was inspiring to think that after all these years of brilliance-years of composing, performing, teaching, writing, living-this man is still on the front edge of what it means to hear new music, to be in time, to exist. There is a power in this music that urges us to do better, to learn, to grow, to change and adapt. To excel in each moment."
"Braxton is one of the past forty years' great radical musical thinkers," explains AllAboutJazz.com Senior Editor John Kelman. "He simply operates on a different plane than the vast majority, and his compositions reflect the kind of rich complexity that is so beyond the conventional that one really has to listen to them with a different set of ears." His groundbreaking and continually evolving approach to music, developed over the past five decades, embraces a wealth of musical traditions ranging from jazz saxophonists Wayne Marsh and Albert Ayler to innovative American composers John Cage and Charles Ives to pioneering European Avant-Garde figures Karlheinz Stockhausen and Iannis Xenakis. Fanatically documented by a dedicated following around the world, his multi-faceted career includes hundreds of recordings, an influential legacy as an educator and author of scholarly writings, and awards such as the prestigious John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation fellowship. "The multi-reedist/composer might very well be jazz's last bona fide genius," adds the All Music Guide's Chris Kelsey. "The best of his work is on a level with any art music of the late 20th century, jazz or classical."

TAYLOR HO BYNUM SEXTET - The Middle Picture (Firehouse12 04-01-002; USA) The Taylor Ho Bynum Sextet's debut release, The Middle Picture, documents both live and studio performances recorded at The Rotunda in Philadelphia and New Haven's Firehouse 12 over the past two years.
"There is much in-between the pressing issues of the world and the mundane toils of the everyday," writes Bynum in the liner notes. "I call it the middle picture: the pursuit of one's life goals, the search for one's true calling, the cultivation of one's personal relationships. While acknowledging the larger and smaller realities of the world, I try to focus on the middle picture, and hope that some of that positive energy and inspiration can influence the pictures on either side. The music on this album grows out of that middle picture, and is dedicated to that hope."
Musicians: Taylor Ho Bynum - cornet/composer; Matt Bauder - tenor saxophone, clarinet and bass clarinet; Mary Halvorson - electric guitar; Evan O'Reilly - electric guitar; Jessica Pavone - viola and electric bass; Tomas Fujiwara - drums.

HOLY MacGILACUDDY! TEN NEW 'CLEAN FEED' RELEASES!!!
ROB BROWN TRIO With DANIEL LEVIN/SATOSHI TAKEISHI - Sounds (clean feed 77; Portugal) After a free jazz investment for many years, now something entirely different. Avant-garde? Composer / improviser Rob Brown says it's an irrelevant categorization nowadays. Instead of the conventional sax-bass-drums combo of the New Thing, "Sounds" gives us an alternative combination of alto saxophone with a cello (Daniel Levin) and Japanese taiko percussion set (Satoshi Takeishi), for a quieter, more open, exotic and abstract music performance than the ones usually labelled as jazz. Abstract, we said? Not always: "Tibetan Folk Song" is what the title says, "Moment of Pause" is a ballad, and the three-part suite "Sounds" was conceived for a Nancy Zendora choreography, and you know how dance need time references to construct in space. And you still have "Stutter Step", a reminder of the free jazz convictions of Mr. Brown, a long-time partner of musicians like William Parker, Matthew Shipp, Joe Morris and Whit Dickey. So, here is one of those situations in which you have a trio of liberated jazz musicians playing their own music. Is it avant-garde? Is it abstract? Does these words matter anymore?

4 CORNERS [MAGNUS BROO/KEN VANDERMARK/ADAM LANE/PAAL NILSSEN-LOVE] - 4 Corners (clean feed 76; Portugal) If you already sensed that the free bop style played by Ken Vandermark has roots in rhythm 'n' blues, here is the recording that confirms your impression. The context enables him to show his origins, and is provided here by a rock solid rhythm section formed by Adam Lane (sometimes with his double bass plugged to a distortion pedal, and when that happens it really grooves) and Paal Nilssen-Love, a drummer who seems to have four arms and four legs A second horn, the trumpet of the amazing Magnus Broo, relates to the saxophonist and clarinetist just as Donald Ayler did with his brother Albert. The compositions, by Vandermark himself and Lane, are reminiscent of the Sixties writing of Ornette Coleman, with the addition of a strong melodic suggestibility - "Lucia" is a good example. But the music is not a celebration of past achievements. This is jazz of the 21st century, reflecting the many musical interests of its performers, going from Mingus flavours and Berio's ideas to a Black Sabbath-like energy and the balance of Funkadelic. "4 Corners" was recorded live in a bar atmosphere during a festival in Coimbra, Portugal, and it reflects the very special moment of communication with the audience they were capable to ignite. This is powerful, loud, intense music, the kind that vibrates in your soul beside your senses and your body. With lots of fun but also profoundly serious in its purpose to gather people in these times of cultural and civilizational conflict.

CARLOS BARRETTO TRIO + LOUIS SCLAVIS - Radio Song (clean feed 72; Portugal) It's not a new recording, but certainly this re-release by Clean Feed will be a great surprise to all those in North America, Europe and Japan who are interested in what's happening in the jazz and improvised music scene on this little country called Portugal. With the most inventive cover art we've seen in 2006, signed by Rui Garrido, Radio Song is an example of user friendly avant-jazz. It's Free but structured, with obvious connections to the most straightahead jazz, a sense of melody influenced by popular Portuguese song forms and a European flavour. In the recent past, double bassist Carlos Barretto had the companionship of the French champion of the baritone, FranCois Corneloup, and now, on three tracks we have clarinetist and saxophonist Louis Sclavis, also from France, as special guest. And of course these tunes have everything to do with Sclavis' love of the imaginary folk he invented in the past with the band Workshop de Lyon. And for one more example of the internationalization of Portuguese jazz, you'll find here two other local musicians deserving wider recognition: guitarist MArio Delgado, a Jimi Hendrix disciple who knows his jazz chops, and drummer JosE Salgueiro, a master of pulsation and tempo who is also concerned with texture. This CD also features a video clip of Radio Song.

ALVIN FIELDER TRIO With DENNIS GONZALEZ/CHRIS PARKER - A Measure Of Vision (clean feed 71; Portugal) Alvin Fielder is a drummer because at age 12 he heard a Max Roach recording and liked it. His family wanted him to study Pharmacy, his fathers profession, and although he became a Pharmacist, music helped shift his destiny. In 1963 he was one of the founders of the now legendary Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM), and there, he was in good company: Sound, Roscoe Mitchell's masterwork, was the first recording with his name on it. The records that followed - many of them as a member of the Sun Ra Arkestra - contributed to the development of the myth surrounding this pioneer of free jazz who thinks that music is like painting a portrait or writing creatively: "Drumming is not beating on something", he warns.
If anyone still has doubts about that after all these years of great examples, along comes Fielder with a trio made up of pianist Chris Parker and trumpeter Dennis Gonzalez - a trio sometimes transformed into a quartet (with Aaron Gonzalez on the double bass or Stefan Gonzalez playing the second drum set) and even a quintet, when both of Gonzalez' sons play, in which Stefan plays vibraphone. A challenging association of personalities which includes two young musicians coming from a past in hardcore punk(!); a master of the piano who is as at ease in a straightahead jazz format as he is composing symphonic works; and, last but not least, one of the most gratifying trumpet soloists around. Obviously, a disc by this crew is driven by tradition and history but with a vision for the future, a document of the jazz continuum, alive, pertinent and audacious.
There's no way you can be indifferent.

SCOTT FIELDS ENSEMBLE With MATTHIAS SCHUBERT/JOHN HOLLENBECK/SCOTT ROLLER - Beckett (Clean Feed 69; Portugal) Here is a new item from the variable ensemble of a self-made man who was a spotter for drug dealers and a thief of hubcaps in his teens, but somehow managed to graduate with degrees in economics and journalism and who has gone on to become one of the most interesting guitarists and composers in the current international scene: Scott Fields. This recording - and what a recording it is! - is the first of a series of settings of Samuel Beckett's short plays, the ensemble now cast as a quartet with cellist Scott Roller, German tenor saxophonist Matthias Schubert and drummer John Hollenbeck. Particularly evident on this CD is Fields' obsession with structures for improvisation, not simply compositions with spaces in which to improvise solos, like in mainstream jazz, but structured improvisation, or, if you prefer, improvisation as a form of composition.
To provide journalists with a name to for his approach to sound organization, Fields has used post-free jazz and exploratory music. Jazz is certainly present, but not in the traditional way the label implies. Unsatisfied with the harmonic systems used in this field, he started to deal almost exclusively with the system proposed by classical contemporary composer Stephen Dembski, especially when writing for large ensembles. On Beckett he uses a variety of tonal systems. In some places - such as Play he relies on Dembski's system, in others, such as Come and Go, he gently incorporates traditional jazz changes, and in some, such as What Where, he uses a mixture of the two. In some ways, this is the most 'jazzy' project he has recorded in many years, and it's certainly the one nearest to the traditional coordinates of this genre. Knowing this, we understand that Hollenbeck is the right choice to deal with pulse: the guy can really swing! And we also understand that Schubert, undoubtedly a jazz sax player, is in comfortable context to do what he knows best.

WALLY SHOUP/GUST BURNS/REUBEN RADDING/GREG CAMPBELL - The Levitation Shuffle (clean feed 73; Portugal) Free improvisation isn't only a European thing. The alto saxophonist Wally Shoup is one of the few American representatives of the musical praxis that dropped the jazz part of the free jazz equation and started improvising without idiomatic parameters. And even if he did discover the Music Improvisation Company (British improvisers Evan Parker, Derek Bailey, Hugh Davies and Jamie Muir) during the Seventies, he didn't forget Ornette Coleman or Albert Ayler, the pioneers of the new thing, or his teenage love for blues, rhythm & blues, and soul.
Shoup, a regular partner of left field guitarists like Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth) and Nels Cline (Wilco) in noise music situations, clearly prefers the by-now conventional sax-bass-drums jazz format, with Reuben Radding and Bob Rees taking up the other chairs in the Wally Shoup Trio. His other trio with cellist Brent Arnold and percussionist Greg Campbell is simply a deviation from that pattern. The Levitation Shuffle quartet is another thing altogether: Radding plays the double bass part, and again, Campbell takes the sticks, but the combo includes a young pianist, Gust Burns, who impregnates his playing with classical and avant-garde motives and techniques. This is not your regular Shoup recording; for that you have those trios and his duos with Chris Corsano - but it's really Shoup you hear, with his trademark serpentine alto saxophone phrasings on top of spontaneous constructions boiling constantly on the verge of explosion.
Careful, or you'll burn yourself.

ETHAN WINOGRAD With GORKA BENITEZ/STEVEN BERNSTEIN/ERIC MINGUS et al - Tangled Tango (clean feed 74; Portugal) Carlos Barretto (b), Eric Mingus (b), Ethan Winogrand (d), Gorka Benitez (sax), Ross Bonadonna (g), Steven Bernstein (t),
Who would've predicted that the drummer of the punk band Joe Cool, one of the regular groups playing at the legendary CBGB's at the end of the Seventies along with Talking Heads, Television and The Ramones, would become a big name in the progressive jazz scene? And who could've known that the collaboration between Ethan Winogrand and Eric Mingus in the funk-rock sextet New Republik in 1991, would continue through the fall of 2006 with the release of Tangled Tango? But it's true. And guess what? Another surprise: This record is dedicated to 'the spirit, music, and continued presence' of none other than Elvin Jones, Winogrand's main musical influence and life's inspiration.
Multi-instrumentalist Ross Bonadonna, who clearly prefers the guitar, is another old friend playing here. But there are three noticeable newcomers to Winogrand's group, one internationally-known, and the others just now beginning to be recognized outside the boundaries of Portugal and Spain. The first is trumpeter Steven Bernstein, master of the slide trumpet, Tzadik habitue, leader of Sex Mob and the Millennial Territory Orchestra, former member of Lounge Lizards and one third of Spanish Fly. The two others are bassist Carlos Barretto, a front line musician on the Portuguese jazz scene, composer in the neo-bop style but concerned with questions of cultural identity and experimentation, and Gorka Benitez, one of the most important leaders in Spanish jazz saxophone. And the music played by this collection of musicians is what you would guess: present day jazz with elements of diversified origins.
Rich, compelling and frequently surprising!

BILLY FOX With MARK DRESSER/CHRISTOPHER HOFFMAN et al - The Uncle Wiggly Suite (Clean Feed 68; Portugal) Arun Luthra (sax), Billy Fox (perc), Christopher Hoffman (cel), Danny Katz (Shamisen), Deanna Witkowski (p), Gary Pickard (sax), John O'Brien (d), John Savage (as), Mark Dresser (b), Paul Faatz (cl), Percy Pursglove (t), Scott Shaeffer (b), Skye Steele (v)
Percussionist and composer Billy Fox is a specialist in combining worlds that live apart. His Uncle Wiggly Suite is a mix of atonal music, Sixties modal jazz, New Orleans brass bands, Cuban rhythms, Pakistani ghazals, and much more (one of the tracks includes a shamisen, a traditional string Japanese instrument), and he usually combines composition, arrangement and improvisation.
A pupil of soprano saxophonist Jane Ira Bloom, he formed his ensemble with emergent young musicians like himself (Gary Pickard, John Savage and Christopher Hoffman being regular companions), giving the bass position to a master of the instrument and someone always open to new ideas, Mark Dresser, a jazz inventor, as the press already called him. In the past, Fox played it all, punk, rockabilly, speed metal, hip-hop, as well as mambo, and now he's profiting from all those experiences. The basis for these compositions is the murky twilight state of semi-sleep, the borderline states of awareness and near-unconscious thought-with Billy in bed, a cheap keyboard within reach and a minidisc recorder to document the results.
The recording yielded a curious series of notes that he later developed while wide awake, finding harmonic possibilities compatible with the rubato lines that had emerged from his unconscious mind. The structure is classical (a suite in ten parts), the basics are jazz, and the resulting music is from this planet at the beginning of the 21st century. But with a humorous side, inspired by the comics of Howard Garis, and loads of irony.
CD $17
JOAO PAULO - Memorias de Quem (clean feed 75; Portugal) he piano solo format is a natural one for this musician of great inner density. Joao Paulo is a composer of exquisite melodic and harmonic sensibility. He's also a very special improviser, with the same drive, deliverance and proficiency that we recognize in Keith Jarrett. But Paulo isn't just a Lisbon-based disciple of Jarrett's stylings and techniques, even if there are the same Romantic references, more Schumann than Chopin.
CD $17
WISHFUL THINKING [ALEX MAGUIRE/ALIPIO C NETO et al] - Wishful Thinking (clean feed 78; Portugal) Alex Maguire (p), Alipio C. Neto (ts), Johannes Krieger (t), Ricardo Freitas (b), Rui Goncalves (d)
To begin with - and we always begin listening a record by reading its title and the names of the tracks -, a glance to the cover of this disc informs us of a situation of conflict. The international outfit formed by Alipio Carvalho Neto (Brazil), Johannes Krieger (Germany), Alex Maguire (United Kingdom), Ricardo Freitas (Portugal) and Rui Goncalves (Portugal) calls itself Wishful Thinking, the mental capacity to project our most ambitious desires. But the title of the CD is not so positive: "Wishful Thinking" tell us that music, since its inception when human beings were more close to nature and the animal kingdom, is a privileged way (because it needs no words) to express pain, frustration, rage and sadness. Truth is there's an inner logic in this apparent paradox, because it's precisely our melancholy that enables us to think about perfect societies of milk and honey. The music played by this quintet is the conciliation of the two forces that drive human conscience: one makes us look forward, the other pushes us to protest, and lament, and shout in anger. So, there's tears ("Urs's Epitaph - Der Hirt", Alipio's tribute to a departed friend) and laughter (Maguire's "Buffalo Bill") here, and that's fine. Good hard bop with a funky electric bass and a wild piano going from the stride tradition to God knows where, that's what you have here. Take it.

NEW FROM EMANEM!!!
PHIL MINTON QUARTET With JOHN BUTCHER/VERYAN WESTON/ROGER TURNER - Slur (EMANEM 4140; UK) "Phil Minton (voice), John Butcher (soprano & tenor saxophones), Veryan Weston (piano), and Roger Turner (percussion). As well as putting this quartet together in the mid-1990s, Phil Minton has been working with the other three musicians in duos. The quartet initially performed utilizing texts from James Joyce's Finnegan's Wake, as can be heard on their previous CD, Mouthfull of Ecstasy (on Victo). Back again a decade later, they are now improvising without using any known words."
CD $20
JOHN RUSSELL - Analekta (EMANEM 4138; UK) "Three duos and a Quaqua. Russell's monthly Mopomoso concerts usually end with him playing a duo -- this CD contains three examples. The guitarist's first duo with tenor saxophonist Garry Todd was in 1975 and appeared on a long deleted Incus LP -- this is a reunion 30 years later. An ongoing duo has been that of Russell and jazz trumpeter Henry Lowther -- not as unlikely as it may seem. Chefa Alonso, who plays soprano saxophone and percussion, is a new encounter for the guitarist. Also included is the nine-piece Quaqua that Russell organized for the 2006 Freedom Of The City festival with Nicole Legros & Jean-Michel Van Schouwburg (voices), Stefan Keune (alto saxophone), Philipp Wachsmann (violin), Ashley Wales (piano), Ivor Kallin (double bass), Javier Carmona (percussion), and Steve Beresford (electronics)."
CD $20
LOL COXHILL - More Together Than Alone (EMANEM 4136; UK) "Soprano saxophonist Lol Coxhill always sounds good regardless of what area he is playing in and who he is playing with. This present collection just features his free improvising, but with a variety of partners. The late Hugh Davies was a master instrument inventor. Guitarist John Russell is one of the major stalwarts of the London improvising scene (like Coxhill). Henry Lowther has been a much sought-after jazz trumpeter since the 1960s, but has always kept a toe in free waters. Pat Thomas is a remarkable pianist as well as being a dab hand at getting the most out of electronics as can be heard here. There is also a substantial solo performance from one of the pioneers of unaccompanied saxophone improvisation -- someone who remains one of the best practitioners of the art."
CD $20
TERRY DAY [PEOPLE BAND] - 2006 Duos (EMANEM 4137; UK) "These five duos mark Terry Day's return to small group improvising after an over-long absence caused by ill health. He is mainly playing his homemade bamboo pipes, but also uses his voice (reciting two poems and otherwise) as well as an echo toy and a cold water bottle. His partners are Charlotte Hug (viola & voice), Rhodri Davies (harp), Phil Minton (voice), Hannah Marshall (cello) and John Russell (guitar). The duo with Hug comes from the 2006 Freedom Of The City festival."
CD $20
FREEDOM OF THE CITY FESTIVAL [V.A. With NICK STEPHENS/NIGEL COOMBES/TONY MARSH et al] - 2006 (EMANEM 4139; UK) "Three groups from the 2006 festival. The opening trio comprises two musicians from Spain and one from New Zealand who have been based in London for a few years -- Chefa Alonso (soprano saxophone), David Leahy (double bass), and Javier Carmona (percussion). The following quartet came from Brussels just for the festival -- Jean-Michel Van Schouwburg (voice), Adelheid Sieuw (flutes, voice), Jan Huib Nas (guitar), and Guy Strale (clarinet, piano, percussion). The final quartet on this CD comprises four veteran London-based improvisers who have been part of the London scene for decades -- Garry Todd (tenor saxophone), Nigel Coombes (violin), Nick Stephens (double bass), and Tony Marsh (percussion). There may not be any 'household names' on this CD, but all the musicians surely deserve to be much better known."
CD $20
PAUL MOTIAN TRIO With BILL FRISELL/JOE LOVANO - Time And Time Again (ECM 1992; USA) Paul Motian's trio with Bill Frisell and Joe Lovano received ecstatic reviews for "I Have The Room Above Her", Motian's ECM 'comeback' album of 2005, and the recording was a "critic's choice" all around the world. Appropriately so: the trio was formed at ECM, way back in 1984, and its sound concept is a most apt match for the label's production values. Luxuriating in the sensuality of sound while also keenly attuned to each other in the improvisations, Motian, Frisell, and Lovano play a gravity-defying, floating music that is at all moments free and intensely melodic. Album features original compositions by Motian, plus Thelonious Monk's "Light Blue" and Rodgers and Hammerstein's "This Nearly Was Mine".

NEW ON AUSTRALIAÕS ÔEXTREMEÕ LABEL:
CLAUDIO PARODI - Horizontal Mover (homage to Alvin Lucier) (Extreme 056; Australia) Few musicians have the opportunity to pay homage to their musical idol, much less send them a recording and receive a reply. CLAUDIO PARODI did just this, sending "Horizontal Mover" to Alvin Lucier. The response was nothing short of overwhelming - "I find it absolutely beautiful".
This shows the humility of Lucier, a pioneering artist, and the talent of PARODI in producing "Horizontal Mover", a work that deserves such praise.
The words of Lucier are worth repeating in full: "Dear Claudio, I just received the CD of Horizontal Mover. I will have to re-read your description of the process to more fully understand it. But I can say that after listening to it, I find it absolutely beautiful. I am honored to be so honored. The CD will take a foremost place in my archives. Thank you so much. Cordially, Alvin Lucier."
PARODI followed his own interpretation of the classic "I am sitting in a Room" using cymbals, drums and toms to invent his own vision of diffusion, resonance and the recording process. Such a process treads a tightrope between concept and music.
Fortunately PARODI's sensibilities are firmly planted in bringing forth music that is both satisfying and challenging to the listener. The sounds keep building on themselves, layer upon layer, to create an intriguing textural music that rewards repeated listening.
"Horizontal Mover" (homage to Alvin Lucier) is the first of seven generative compositions that PARODI is recording for Extreme. Other musical luminaries to be showcased in the series include Charles Hayward, Yasunao Tone (of Fluxus) and Alvin Curran.

JOHN RODGERS - A Rose is a Rose... (Extreme LTD07; Australia) Early in his career, John Rodgers was faced with the tough question of whether to pursue a career as a concert violinist, most likely with the prestigious Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, or to take his chances in the music world.
John said no to security and comfort and chose adventure and struggle. The overarching reason being he didn't want to play dead people's music.
John Rodgers is very much alive and his debut solo release, "A rose is a rose..." is proof that his talent for violin and composition would be wasted playing renditions of Mozart or Stravinsky.
"A rose is a rose..." features John on both violin and piano with fellow musicians Anthony Burr, bass clarinet, Ken Edie, drums, and John Reeves, voice. John composed all of the pieces, with noted collaboritive help by the performers, writing music that challenges the musician as much as the listener.
John also displays his improvisational skills on tracks such as "St Mary's" and "1/1/94". This talent is something that has made the performances of the Australian Art Orchestra a joy to behold. His versatility is displayed in a large orchestra setting, in duos and trios and as a solo performer.
"A rose is a rose..." is an accomplished musical statement from a very talented composer and musician. Australia has a new violinist to take note of.

NEW FROM CADENCE & CIMP:
[in stock next week]
ODEAN POPE QUARTET - To The Roach (CIMP 353; USA) Odean Pope is a master of improvised music in both technique and thought. A distinguished and distinguishable voice, his latest CIMP event finds him playing tribute to his "boss" of 20 years, Max Roach. This session finds Odean outfitted with a new quartet featuring guitar - unprecedented in the Pope discography. No need to pontificate further. This is pure Pope - a broad view from the typically more lyrical to arguably his most volcanic work on record. There's a surpise at the end of this recording: a few moments of something very special albeit in low low fidelity. This is the complete Pope.
CD $15
STEVE SWELL/DAVID TAYLOR - Double Diploid (CIMP 352; USA) Whoa! Two trombones and two percussionists? What can this be? What it is is music of great rhythm, drive, humor, intensity, and downright fun. If you've come across the talents of either or both Messrs. Swell and Taylor, then you know the contrast of their brilliance. Add in Warren Smith (a senior percussion master) and Chad Taylor (no longer just in the underground) and you have a quartet of great capabilities - even of accomplishing the musical Double Diploid, and more the fun for it. Twice the pleasure just for the asking.
CD $15
STEPHEN GAUCI QUARTET - Wisps Of An Unknown Face (CIMP 351; USA) Stephen Gauci has come on strong in the past three years. A veteran of the business, it's only of recent that he's decided to record. And that still slim body of work has been enthusiastically received by both the public and critics. Here Stephen expands his core trio with trumpeter Nate Wooley - a brilliant choice. The whole of Gauci, Wooley, Filiano, and Grassi is music far more than the sum of its parts.

BURTON GREENE - Retrospective 1961-2005: Solo Piano (CIMP 355; USA) Recorded 2005. This is the final release of the precedent-setting recording sessions with Burton Greene that documented this artist's music in quintet (#339), trio (#345), and now solo settings. This trilogy is an important milestone in Burton's career, spanning five decades of defining and redefining his very distinctive artistry. In the undertaking of this project, CIMP affirms that Burton Greene was at the top of his form and focus. And this solo recital confirms the originality, humor, and emotional maturity of this unique artist. As is the CIMP method, extensive notes give insight to both the music and the occasion, setting, and preparation.

ANDY PARTRIDGE [XTC] - Fuzzy Warbles Collection: Volumes 1-9 [9 CD set] (Ape House BOX01; UK) The box set includes all 8 volumes of Andy Partridge's Fuzzy Warbles, a bonus 9 track CD entitled Hinges, a book entitled A Brief History of Home Taping and a sheet of Fuzzy Warbles stamps.
"Get the Beatles hopped up on nerves and caffeine, expose them to music after 1970, keep their sense of humor but set them worrying about the decline of everything from the environment to a marriage, and sequester them in a home studio. The result might be something like ''Fuzzy Warbles,'' the compilation of demos and outtakes by XTC's main songwriter, Andy Partridge. Fond of the English 1960s but full of brittle surprises and fearlessly low-fi, Mr. Partridge is a fount of tunes and cracked concepts. This huge outpouring is inevitably uneven and for XTC fans only, but it's fascinating to hear the songs with their workings exposed." - JON PARELES, NY Times

HUGH HOPPER/JULIAN WHITFIELD - in a dubious manner (deliberate; UK) Canterbury electric bass great Hugh Hopper laid these self-produced CDR's upon me when he was in town to play at DMG's Softworks CD Celebration at the Bowery Poetry Club the night of the great blackout!?! He ended up playing a borrowed acoustic guitar, instead of his customary electric (fuzz) bass.
On this duo offering Hugh plays bass, guitar, loops & keys, while Julian sings and plays guitar, bass, loops and keys as well. Their guests include saxists Tony Rico, Pierre-Olivier Govin & Peter Cook, guitarists Trevor Stevenson & Rob Harvey, Robert Jarvis on trombone, Alex Keen on acoustic bass and drummers Andy Ward (from Camel & Bevis Frond) & Liam Genockey (for Trevor Watts).
Can't say that I am familiar with anyone here except for the drummers, but no matter. "Bogey Man", opens with a great, sly, rockin' groove, fuzz guitar, a chorus of saxes and Julian's great 70's style blues/rocking vocals. "Dimension 5" has a fine, mysterious vocals and a strange, hypnotic groove with some backwards sounding loops. What is great is that both the drum machine and vocoder vocals are used sparingly, adding some subtle mystery and some dreamy grooves throughout.
"Quagmire" has another laid back and slimy blues groove which kicks into high gear midway when it turns into "Old Chrome Moon" and has some great fuzz bass at the center. Kinda reminds me of The Mothers or Geronimo Black with that greasy horn section. Both Hugh and Julian do a great job of looping layers of strange sounds/instruments/vocals into their mesmerizing and enticing alien blend. It flows together seamlessly like the way those great Soft Machine releases/sets do. A bit funkier and more blues drenched than I would have imagined, but still an unexpected gem!

HUGH HOPPER [music] & MATT HOWARTH [comics] With ROBERT WYATT et al - The Stolen Hour (Burning Shed 204; UK) Music by Hugh Hopper and comics by Matt Howarth. The music portion features Hugh on bass guitar, guitar and rhythm loops; Robert Wyatt on cornet & voice loops; Frank van der Kooy, Pierre-Olivier Govin & Simon Picard on saxes; Didier Malherbe on flute loops and Jan Ponsford on voice. 'The Stolen Hour' refers to lost hour of daylight savings time, that was manipulated by the American media conglomerate to make it easier to cover the 2000 Summer Olympics in Australia. Hugh has long been working with loops, formerly tape-loops were used on Soft Machine 'Third' & 'Six', as well as Hugh's incredible first solo effort, '1884'.
On 'The Stolen Hour', Hugh creates a series of hypnotic grooves with bass and percussion loops. Three saxists, one flutist and Robert Wyatt's cornet all get a chance to solo over or add their unique sound or voice to these great grooves. Although I know Didier from his longtime work with Gong, and Simon Picard from his work in Paul Dunmall's Octet and with John Wolf Brennan, I don't know Frank or Pierre-Olivier very well. On a few of these tracks Hugh's beloved fuzz bass makes a grand appearance, sounding slightly different each time. That wonderful growling electric bass is what makes all of us Canterbury fans smile and feel at home in this often troubled world. There is a comic strip included on a PDF file on this great disc, I am looking forward to checking it out, as I am a fan of Matt Howarth as well. - BLG

A computer manipulated collage of live and studio performances, 'Jazzloops' possesses the fizz and energy of classic Soft Machine along with an astute awareness the possibilities of contemporary technology that occasionally brings to mind the jazzier extremes of post-Trip-Hoppers DJ Shadow and Koop.
Featuring mangled contributions from Robert Wyatt, Elton Dean and John Marshall (amongst many others).

RARE VINYL REISSUES !!!
ERIC DOLPHY QUINTET Featuring HERBIE HANCOCK - Gaslight Inn, October 7th 1962 (Get Back 2027; Italy) 180 gram LP version. A 1962 broadcast originating from the Gaslight Inn in New York Ciry is the source for this live Italian bootleg. Eric Dolphy leads a pickup group with Herbie Hancock and Richard Davis, along with drummer Edgar Bateman and trumpeter and flugelhornist Ed Armour [and Joe Carrol vocals on one cut]. Dolphy is heard almost exclusively on alto sax, though he does get in a few typically adventurous solos. The leader's memorable flute makes the nearly twelve and a half minute "Left Alone" the most valuable track. There are also performances of his originals "Miss Ann" and "G.W." Singer Joe Carroll dominates a rather forgettable bluesy treatment "Oh, Lady be Good!" in which Dolphy is only featured briefly on bass clarinet. The broadcast is faded with DJ Alan Grant's voice-over on top of an incomplete rendition of Dolphy's "245." This long unavailable LP, later reissued on CD by the now defunct Stash as Live in New York [and more recently on Lone Hill under its original title], has had its recording quality improved to be the best possible here.

ORNETTE COLEMAN With DEWEY REDMAN/CHARLIE HADEN/ED BLACKWELL - Whom Do You Work For? [aka Rock The Clock] (Get Back 2028; Italy) 180 gram LP version. Recorded live in Berlin in 1971, this set features Charlie Haden on bass, the prominent solos of Dewey Redman on tenor, and Ed Blackwell's delightful drumming. But the real stars are the compositions themselves, which are wonderful vehicles for inspired improvisation. Coleman picks up his bandmate's lines as if in mid-thought and extends them seamlessly. Tracks: "Street Woman," "Song For Che," "Whom Do You Work For," "Rock The Clock" and "Written Word."

RAFAEL TORAL - Space Solo 1 (Quecksilber 011; Germany) This is Rafael Toral's 11th release, the first for the Quecksilber label, and another continuation of his "Space Program." After 15+ years of accomplished work on guitar and electronics, the Portuguese musician, producer and sound engineer announced that he was to embark on a long-term project, which was to be a multi-faceted work-in-progress representing his new approach to music. With the release of the first album of the program, the eponymous Space, he managed to disrupt the notions of avant-garde music, choosing to focus on "single sound events." The sounds are generated by self-devised electronic equipment set into action by the performance of gestures, by bodily action (take a look at the video samples of the "Space Study 1" on his web site, where he "plays" glove-controlled computer sinewaves). Thus, the music is created by individual decisions in real time -- just like in jazz, as Toral emphasizes. So basically, this is electronic music played with a jazz sensibility. Toral brings a performative aspect to electronic music that it often sorely lacks. The initial album Space is like a roadmap, accompanied by three distinct serieses: the performance series "Space Studies" (which started in 2004), and the record series "Space Elements" and "Solo Series." The latter are unaccompanied real-time solo recordings on one instrument only (as opposed to "Space Elements," where Toral collaborates with other musicians). The present CD is the first in that series and the second materialization of the program. Whereas Space featured an orchestral approach to composition (and thus a diversity of elements), Space Solo 1 presents the listener with music that is narrowed down almost to a point: everything is concentrated on a single element. The key feature of this music is that it was performed with a degree of skill, a commitment and a depth of exploration that could not be found on an orchestral record. On this album, Toral appears as a musician who simply plays an instrument on an individual, human and physical level. One cannot help but notice that Toral is opening up a new dimension in music -- and maybe also in language. Welcome to a new mode of expression.

K. K. NULL [KAZUYUKI KISHINO] - Fertile (Touch 74; UK) K.K. Null is legendary Japanese noise experimentician Kazuyuki Kishino, and this is his first full-length solo release on Touch, following his collaboration with Chris Watson and Z'ev in 2005, which Boomkat called "moving and atmospheric," and The Wire wrote "...a complex dramatic work from a strict economy of means." K.K. Null is a composer, guitarist, singer, mastermind of seminal noise group Zeni Geva and electronic wizard. One of the top names in Japanese noise music and in a wider context, one of the great cult artists in experimental music since the early '80s. Kazuyuki writes: "In June of 2006, I had the good fortune of visiting Darwin in the Northern Territory in Australia and explored in Kakadu National Park with some good friends. I took my digital recorder along with me and did some live field recordings there. First we encountered a flock of wild birds just beside the South Alligator River, and then we happened to find 'bush fire' flaring just beside the road we were on. I also had a unique opportunity to record a magnificent symphony orchestra of insects, frogs and birds in wetlands just before sunset. At that time I had no idea or no specific purpose for using these field recordings, and in the middle of working on this album (Fertile) in my home studio, suddenly came up with the idea of mixing these field recordings into some of the tracks that were unfinished. I felt comfortable with layering & mixing different sounds from different locations and times, digital and analog sounds into one piece. I like also the balance of spontaneity (field recording) and intentional act (studio recording)." After playing the guitar as his main instrument for some twenty years, K. K. Null has gradually moved towards a more electronic approach. In recent years he has concentrated his efforts on his solo & collaborative recordings, exploring the outer territories of electronica. His intense clashing waves of noise, structured electro-acoustic ambience, broken down rhythmics, scattered pitch sculptures and droning isolationist material could be described "cosmic noise maximal/minimalism."

MERZBOW [MASAMI AKITA] - Merzbear (Important 136; USA) "Author, activist, painter and sound artist Masami Akita had been at the foreground of experimental music for over 25 years. Inspired by psychedelic rock, free jazz, early electronic composition as well the physical arts, especially Kurt Schwitters' Merzbau, Masami Akita has created a musical language all his own. Merzbear is the sixth Merzbow release in his utterly essential Merz series for Important Records. Merzbear pulses and pounds with distorted droning heavy guitar feedback, pulsing noise-blasts and the swirling analog sounds of Akita's distinct EMS Sythi. Like most of Merzbow's recordings, Merzbear is a significant document of his ever evolving improvisational style. Slowly, he's been moving away from his pure laptop era and re-incorporating elements of his pre-laptop analog days w/ his homemade junk guitar, EMS Synthi & electronics. This hybrid sound brings the past into the present and pounds with total junk-collage Dada urgency as only Masami Akita can do it. Cover art by Jenny Akita."

ALESSANDRO STEFANA With MARC RIBOT/LEO ABRAHAMS et al - Poste e Telegrafi (Important 138; USA) "Poste e Telegrafi is the debut solo album from Italian guitarist Allesandro Stefana. Featuring an all-star cast including Mark Ribot & Leo Abrahams, Stefana creates a dreamy world of instrumental perfection and beauty. Inspired by the work of Ennio Morricone, Ry Cooder, Simon Jeffes, Steve Reich and Brian Eno, he has created a thoroughly modern Western world within his compositions and arrangements. With constant references to traditional music and rural blues he utilizes electric and acoustic instrumentation with tremendously compelling results. Acoustic, electric, and pedal steel guitars along with banjo, kalimba, baliphones and found objects were all carefully combined with some primitive electronic instruments such as an arpeggiator, omnichord and home made vinyl loops. His sound is entirely original yet clearly rooted in traditions such as film music, blues, experimental, ambient and avant garde musics. Stefana manages his cast of collaborators very well. Most tracks on Poste e Telegrafi are duets with these musicians keeping the sound and arrangement simple and pure. Instruments breathe and pulse with life and excitement in this highly original album. To call this a 'promising debut' would be to dismiss the tremendous success delivered by Poste e Telegrafi."

KALEVI AHO - Contrabassoon/Tuba Concertos (BIS 1574; EEC) "Two unusual solo instruments are the focus of this all-Aho disc. Indeed, in the case of the contrabassoon (or double bassoon), Kalevi Aho's work is one of the very few concertos that exists. It is also by far the most demanding and extensive. In fact, the solo part became playable only after recent developments of the instrument itself, extending its compass upwards. While composers have treated the tuba slightly more generously, there was certainly room for another concerto in the repertoire when Aho composed it in 2001. Both instruments are sometimes treated as the buffoons of the symphony orchestra, and are often called in by composers for comic effect. But Kalevi Aho underlines the great capacity of the two for cantabile singing, a quality that he has endeavored to bring out in their respective concertos. A recent release of Aho works was described in Gramophone as 'a superb coupling of two strongly communicative contemporary works.'"

MORTON FELDMAN//MARIANNE SCHUPPE - Three Voices (Col Legno 20249; Germany) Feldman's 1982 piece for solo voice, performed here by Marianne Schuppe. "This piece is sung by the Swiss 'deep voice,' Marianne Schuppe in trio with herself, a feat made possible by playing back recordings of her own voice. This is not minimal music; melodic lines arise, sensual, beautiful, and undoctored, swaying like a lullaby, yet boosting the overall rhythmic intensity. There cannot be many works which demand of the soloist such careful timing, intense concentration and voice control."

He died in Darmstadt, the town in which he had settled and in which, already 'alienated from the more orthodox serialists,' he had used his compositional technique to link and confront old with new, and the individual with the mass (for instance with juxtaposition of solo instruments with masses of sound)."

IANNIS XENAKIS - Kraanerg (1968/69) (Col Legno 20217; Germany) In the composition 'Kraanerg' new pitch and tonal structures are found now only in the live part for large orchestra but also in the tape accompaniments. In many of the sounds on the tape, more over, one can still hear that they derive from recorded instrumental passages. But even such passages can usually be distinguished from the live parts by their (more or less extensive) technical distortion. Often their sound has been altered -- for example by damping or slowing and expanding (that is the recordings are played back at a lower speed, resulting in a lower pitch as well) -- so that even when listening to the CD one can distinguish clearly between live sounds and tape sounds (whether they are alternating or overlapped).

ART FARMER With CEDAR WALTON/SAM JONES/BILLY HIGGINS//DUKE ELLINGTON - To Duke With Love (441/Test Of Time 11; USA) Test of Time Records is proud to bring you a unique tribute to the great Duke Ellington by none other than Art Farmer. The album was recorded in March of 1975, almost a year after Ellington passed away. It was actually the very first album that Art Farmer recorded for East Wind and the start of a recording partnership with the tight rhythm section made up of pianist Cedar Walton, bassist Sam Jones and drummer Billy Higgins. The album contains Ellington favorites such as In A Sentimental Mood, Love You Madly and It Don't Mean A Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing) arranged by Art Farmer himself. It also includes Star-Crossed Lovers (about Romeo and Juliet) that was part of the collection of songs about characters developed by William Shakespeare called Such Sweet Thunder. A rarely performed song called The Brown Skin Gal in the Calico Gown gets an Art Farmer flugelhorn touch. This memorable homage to the Duke is definitely timeless.

ART FARMER With CEDAR WALTON/SAM JONES/BILLY HIGGINS - Yesterday's Thoughts (441/Test Of Time 03; USA) recorded July 16 and 17, 1975. In the Jazz medium, if one speaks of the flugelhorn, Art Farmer comes to mind immediately. He was 'instrumental' in popularizing the use of it, and no one has made it sound more lyrical. YESTERDAY'S THOUGHTS is a ballad effort, which includes Michel Legrand's What Are You Doing The Rest of Your Life, Antonio Carlos Jobim's Bossa Nova number, How Insensitive, and Johnny Mercer's Namely You. The title track was written by Farmer's good friend and collaborator, Benny Golson, and features Farmer's warm horn playing. The accompanying rhythm section consists of some of the finest Jazz musicians of the time; pianist Cedar Walton, bassist Sam Jones and drummer Billy Higgins. Besides contributing with his outstanding piano solos on numerous tracks, Cedar Walton contributed the up-tempo number, Firm Roots, where the musicians expertly plays off each other.

ART FARMER With CEDAR WALTON/SAM JONES/BILLY HIGGINS - The Summer Knows (441/Test Of Time 05; USA) Test of Time Records brings you another fabulous Art Farmer album featuring him on the flugelhorn interpreting ballads composed by Michel Legrand (The Summer Knows) and Burt Bacharach (Alfie) in lyrical fashion that is his trademark. THE SUMMER KNOWS was recorded in May 12 and 13, 1976 at the Vanguard Studios in New York. He is accompanied by the tight rhythm section, consisting of pianist Cedar Walton, bassist Sam Jones and drummer Billy Higgins. The album has a little bit variety with a mid-tempo Bossanova performance of "Manha de Carnaval" (Morning of Carnival) from the movie BLACK ORPHEUS and a bluesy number Ditty penned by Art Farmer himself. Sit back, relax and listen to his subtle and delicate mastery of the flugelhorn that has withstood the test of time

GREAT JAZZ TRIO [HANK JONES/RON CARTER/TONY WILLIAMS] - Vol 1: Live At The Village Vanguard 1977 (441/Test Of Time 02; USA) In February 1977, three jazz giants came together for a week in the legendary Village Vanguard in New York City, creating the first in a series of live recordings that became the definitive work of the group known as The Great Jazz Trio. This session featured the original Great Jazz Trio dream team of Hank Jones, Ron Carter and Tony Williams, a unique combination of multi-generational musicians (at the time Hank was 58, Ron 39, Tony 31) of different experience & styles (Tony liked rock and led a fusion band called Lifetime).
From the 6-hours of great jazz recorded over 3-days, this album features jazz standards such as John Coltrane's Naima and Charlie Parker's Moose the Mooche. In addition, Ron Carter brought his own blues piece, 12+12 and Hank Jones found a rarely performed piece, Favors, written by Claus Orgermann to perform.
Ron Carter and Tony Williams have played together before as part of the Miles Davis Quintet in the '60s. The synergy of this trio was so great, Hank commented, "The two would pick up in an instant anything that I would do. It was like telepathy. That made it so thrilling and fun."

GREAT JAZZ TRIO [HANK JONES/RON CARTER/TONY WILLIAMS] - Vol 2: Live At The Village Vanguard 1977 (441/Test Of Time 06; USA) This is the second in the three-part chronicle of The Great Jazz Trio's landmark performance recorded live at The Village Vanguard between February 18th and 20th, 1977. This recording features the original Great Jazz Trio dream team of Hank Jones on piano, Ron Carter on bass and Tony Williams on drums. During these 3-days, six full hours of flawless music by these top musicians at their best was recorded. The idea for these jazz greats to team up came from the youngest, Tony Williams. After playing together in two earlier occasions, their chemistry was so good that they all decided to perform together again at the urging of Max Gordon, the late owner of The Village Vanguard. It was Max Gordon that christened the group, The Great Jazz Trio. Featured in this volume are Charlie Parkers Confirmation, Sara Cassey's beautiful Wind Flower, Miles Davis' exotic Nardis and drummer Tony Williams' original composition, Lawra.

GREAT JAZZ TRIO [HANK JONES/RON CARTER/TONY WILLIAMS] - Vol 3: Live At The Village Vanguard Again (441/Test Of Time 08; USA) his is the last in the three-part chronicle of The Great Jazz Trio's landmark performance recorded live at The Village Vanguard between February 18th and 20th, 1977. This recording features the original Great Jazz Trio dream team of Hank Jones on piano, Ron Carter on bass and Tony Williams on drums. ANDREW HILL - Hommage: Solo 1975 (441/Test Of Time 01; USA) Following in the footsteps of the release of PASSING SHIPS and DANCE OF DEATH on Blue Note, our release by Andrew Hill of HOMMAGE is one of the few solo piano effort that he recorded. Captured by the master engineer, David Baker, at the Vanguard Studio in New York City on May 19 & 20 and July 31, 1975, six of the seven tracks are Hill's original compositions. Hill is known for his haunting & cerebral melodies that are rhythmically as well as harmonically complex. Because this recording was his first solo album in his then 20-year career, he was very deliberate in preparing for this session, from his playing right down to the selection of the piano. At his strong insistence, the track "Naked Spirit" was recorded in complete darkness to allow him to let his fingers be guided solely by his spirit. This is a unique and rare recording that illustrates why Andrew Hill deserves a place in jazz history.

ANDREW HILL With CHRIS WHITE/LEROY WILLIAMS - Blue Black (441/Test Of Time 10; USA) This is the third release of Andrew Hill's work for Test of Time records after Hommage and Nefertiti. This album, Blue Black, was recorded on February 26, 1975 at CI Recording Studios in New York. All five tracks featured in this album are Hill's originals. Andrew Hill's rich soundscapes are taken to another level in the form of a quartet. Accompanying him are Chris White on bass, Leroy Williams on drums, and Jimmy Vass on soprano sax / alto sax / flute. These are the same players who performed on another Andrew Hill album recorded later in 1975 called Divine Revelations from Steeple Chase Records. Enjoy the imaginative and challenging compositional style of Andrew Hill that has withstood the test of time.

ANDREW HILL With RICHARD DAVIS/ROGER BLANK - Nefertiti (441/Test Of Time 07; USA) his is the second release of Andrew Hill's work for Test of Time records after Hommage. Recorded on January 25, 1976 at The Vanguard Studios in New York, all six tracks featured in this album are Hill's originals. The fourth track called Hattie is named after his mother. Accompanying him are Richard Davis on bass and Roger Blank on drums. Richard Davis has recorded with Andrew Hill on over 9 of Hill's albums and considers Davis one of the best bassists playing today. Roger Blank is known for his work with Sun Ra, Frank Foster and Pharoah Sanders. This album was engineered and produced by the late great David Baker. Enjoy the unique style of Andrew Hill that has withstood the test of time.

SHEILA JORDAN - Confirmation (441/Test Of Time 04; USA) recorded July 12 and 13, 1975, CONFIRMATION is the second album after PORTRAIT OF SHEILA JORDAN in 1962 from Blue Note. Ms. Jordan waited for more than a decade to get the opportunity to sing the kind of songs she likes with the musicians with whom she liked to work. She said that, if given a chance to record another album, she would dedicate it to her daughter Tracy and to children all over the world. She got that chance. The first side of the original LP, consisting of five tracks, relate to children in one way or another, including Rodgers and Hammerstein's My Favorite Things and Dr. Seuss' Because We're Kids.' Ms. Jordan brings her distinct improvisational style, influenced mostly by instrumentalists like Charlie Parker rather then singers, and makes each of the songs into something uniquely her own. This is illustrated in Charlie Parker's composition, Confirmation. Sheila still performs Pearlie's Swine, composed by Steve Kuhn, as part of her live repertoire almost three decades later.

ROMERO LUBAMBO With HERBIE MANN/IVAN LINS et al - Rio de Janeiro Underground ('441' 02; USA) On this album, many guest artists are featured. Let's start with Ivan Lins. Ivan was born in 1945 in Rio de Janeiro. His fame rose as a singer songwriter in 1970 when the composition he wrote, called "Madalena," for Elis Regina, became a hit. Elis continued to perform songs written by him. Ivan Lins became known internationally when Quincy Jones started using his songs. On George Benson's Give Me the Night album (1980) produced by Quincy, the Lins compositions "Dinorah, Dinorah" and "Love Dance" were recorded. Even on Quincy Jones' album The Dude (1980), Lins' composition, "Velas" was recorded.
Herbie Mann, another prominent guest artist, was born in 1930 in New York. In '57, he recorded the classic album Yardbird Suite with Phil Woods. His own unique style started emerging in 1959 when he formed the Afro-Jazz Sextet. In 1961, he visited South America as an American Jazz Festival member and was heavily influenced by Brazilian music. The following year, he visited Brazil again to work with Sergio Mendes, Antonio Carlos Jobim, and Baden Powell to record Do The Bossa Nova.
On keyboards, the featured artist is none other than Cesar Camargo Mariano. Mr. Mariano was born in Sao Paulo in 1943. He is one of the top producer / arranger in the Brazilian music scene. In the late 60's, he became known for producing Wilson Simonal, and later worked with top artists such as Elis Regina, whom he later married. From the late 70's until her last album recorded in 1980, Cesar gave her full support during her best years. Now, their son, Pedro Mariano has just released a new album from the Trama label and is garnering attention in Brazil.
Besides these great guest artists, other talented musicians join Romero in bringing you the best sounds from Rio de Janeiro. Enjoy!

DAVID MURRAY QUARTET With HILTON RUIZ/KELLY ROBERTY/PHEEROAN AkLAFF - Live at the Village Vanguard ('441' 07; USA) David Murray (Tenor Sax, Bass Clarinet) is an extremely passionate player. This album was recorded at the Village Vanguard in 1995. He is joined by some accomplished musicians: Hilton Ruiz on Piano, Kelly Roberty on Bass, and Pheroan Aklaf on Drums. The tracks included on this title show Murray's full talent. A must have for any David Murray fan or Village Vanguard buff.
"David Murray has a firm sense of direction. Ever since the mid '70s when he came roaring out of the west to take the NYC loft scene." ~ Howard Mandel

LOVIN' FIRE [V.A.] - 20 Obscure Gems from the UK and Europe (Psychic Circle 7001; UK) Brand new prog compilation containing rarities, compiled by legendary psych musician and Psychic Circle label-head, Nick Saloman (The Bevis Frond). Psychic Circle endeavors to go a little bit further than your average comp imprint, and the intention is to assemble themed albums of rare tunes that have been overlooked by other compilers. Psychic Circle's production values are of the highest order, and the sound quality as good as it can possibly be. The original artwork is designed to reflect the musical content, and the 8-page booklet, written by Saloman, is informative and well researched. The names of the bands may not be familiar, but the quality of their music is undeniable. As the '60s gave way to the '70s, it wasn't just fashion that was in a frenzied state of flux. Music, too, was undergoing a seismic transformation. By late '69, progressive rock was becoming established as the prevailing musical genre, a position it was to occupy until the birth of punk in the next decade. This compilation comprises 20 unknown diamonds, previously un-comped on CD, from prog's early days. Artists include: Silence, Ray Owen's Moon, Ipsissimus, The Warm Sensation, Pacific Sound, Apartment 1, White Mule, Left Side, Mayroc, The Exchange And Mart, The Royal Servants, Custer's Track, Rainbows, The Locomotive, Andromeda, Whichwhat, The Influence, Children, Hunter and Paul Nicholas

Featuring the hit 'Say You Don't Mind,' a number of Blunstone originals and a beautiful cover of Tim Hardin's 'Misty Roses.'"

ANNE BRIGGS - The Time Has Come (Water 192; USA) New version of this acclaimed album, previously reissued in sporadically available fashion by the laughable CBS/Columbia remnant empire. New liner notes by Andy Beta; most homes would appreciate an upgrade pf this all-time lip-melter and here it is. "One of the most important figures of the British folk revival of the 1960s, Anne Briggs was a huge influence on such luminaries as Sandy Denny, Maddy Prior and Linda Thompson. This is her second full-length, originally released in 1971. Unlike previous releases which contained mostly traditional songs with little or no accompaniment, this album features many self-penned numbers as well as a few contemporary covers with Briggs playing guitar and bouzouki. Briggs only released two albums and a handful of singles/EPs before retiring from the music business, making this reissue an important document of the British folk revival."
CD $15
GILBERTO GIL - Gilberto Gil (Water 191; USA) First ever U.S. reissue of this album, with new liner notes by Peter Margasak. "Released in 1971 while Gil was living in London, this is the third self-titled release from the bossa nova and tropicalia legend. Gil recorded this album while in political exile from his native Brazil and its somber, straightforward tone is a welcome change from the experimental, psychedelic assault of his 1969 long player. Featuring 8 originals and a brilliant cover Steve Winwood's 'Can't Find My Way Home,' this Water release also contains 3 bonus tracks including covers of Jimi Hendrix and The Beatles. A tropicalia classic."

COLUMBIA! [V.A.] - The Golden Years of Discos Fuentes: The Powerhouse of Columbian Music 1960-76 (Soundway 07; UK) Soundway Records presents the tropical sound of Colombia. From the salsas and descargas of Cali, Medellin and Bogota to the Afro sounds and raw cumbias of Cartagena and Barranquilla, this is the sound of Colombian dancehalls and clubs in the '60s and '70s, when the legendary Discos Fuentes record label led the way. The sounds emanating from the barrios and beaches of Colombia are a unique mixture of Latin sounds and Afro rhythms, drawing influences from the New York and Puerto Rican Latin scenes, the highlife and rumba of West Africa and the calypso of the Caribbean, as well as the tropical rhythms of the Colombian cumbia, gaita, fandango and porro. Driving percussion, swinging horns, hot pianos and jumping bass lines -- this music was made for dancing.

FLASH NEWS!!!
It seems Tonic, one of our favorite places, will be closing for good on April 15th, unless radical economic help is forthcoming.
Some notable shows that are upcoming [and not yet known to be cancelled]:
Tuesday Apr 4th, 8PM
ADACHI TOMOMI - Performer, composer, sound poet and visual artist from Tokyo, known for his versatile style. He will present solo improvisations with combinations of voice, computer, self-made instruments (electronic/amplified objects) and an original sensor system named "infrared sensor shirt." His performance is characterized by a sense of humor and a singular intensity with visual pleasure. His CDs have been released on Naya records and Tzadik.
Thurs & Friday April 6 + 7, 8 PM & 9:30 PM
MISHA MENGELBERG & ICP ORCHESTRA - Four Shows In Two Nights!!!
"My main thought about the ICP is: How do they do it? The show is always radically different. But perhaps what amazes me most is the way they wander in and out of strictly composed material. The crux of what they do, as the name implies, is improvisation. And they do it as well as anyone out there."--Dave Douglas
Wed April 11th, 8PM
PETER BROTZMANN-MARINO PLIAKAS-MICHAEL WERTMULLER
Peter Brotzmann (Germany, reeds) - the living legend of the European new jazz. A founder of European Free Jazz movement, his work includes collaborations and recordings with Last Exit (with Bill Laswell, Sonny Sharrock and Ronald Shannon Jackson), Evan Parker, Misha Mengelberg, and Borah Bergman. Recent projects include Die Like a Dog (with William Parker, Hamid Drake and Toshinori Kondo), his homage to Albert Ayler, the Chicago-based Brotzmann Tentet and many more.

http://www.danielblake.net):
RAOUL BJORKENHEIM/LUKAS LIGETI DUO (guitar & drums)
Bushwick is a really great up-and-coming neighborhood. I live in Bushwick
and love it - there is a lot of interesting activity here. Take the L train
to Jefferson Ave. and walk less than 1 block south on Starr.
My duo with Raoul is a particularly interesting venture, and our concerts
don't happen often. This performance is part of Dan Blake's First Saturdays
series, it begins at 8 and there will be a few bands; I don't know the
order of appearance but the entire program will be very cool, including
Dan's own band, the Dan Blake Party.
SUNDAY, APRIL 8 @ 8 PM @ COMA, ABC NO RIO (156 Rivington St. between
Clinton and Suffolk, Manhattan, http://www.abcnorio.org):
MARTIN PHILADELPHY'S PAINT, featuring Philadelphy (guitar), Tom Abbs
