SYLVIE COURVOISIER - Lonelyville (Intakt 120; Switzerland) Featuring Sylvie Courvoisier on piano & compositions, Mark Feldman on violin, Vincent Courtois on cello, Ikue Mori on electronics and Gerald Cleaver on drums. This classic disc was recorded live at the Vidy Theatre in Lausanne, Switzerland in April of 2006. Sylvie Couvoisier never ceases to astonish me as a completely singular pianist and composer. Her playing both inside and on the piano keyboard sets her apart as she sounds like no else. Since moving to New York in the past decade, she has become an integral part of the creative scene which revolves around The Stone and Tonic and involves a few dozen musicians like John Zorn, Susie Ibarra, Mark Feldman (her husband & most frequent collaborator), Erik Friedlander, Tim Berne, Ikue Mori and others. Sylvie's duo with Mark Feldman is extraordinary whether improvising or playing Masada songs.
For her new quintet disc, 'Lonelyville', Sylvie has put together a fine quintet that features three of downtown's best with French cellist, Vincent Courtois, who we know from his work with Louis Sclavis. This discs consists of three long pieces and a shorter title track. "Texturologie" begins sparse and is superbly recorded. The piece unfolds slowly with each nuance of sound delicately placed. There is a short, violent section about five minutes in, which soon settles back to the haunting spare sound with some excellent cello and violin taking short, precious solo in between the other intense eruptions. Sylvie and Gerald play a great, tight well-crafted piano and drums duo that is shows how well-matched they are, eventually adding Ikue's focused electronics to the duo. The balance between the sparse and intense eruptions is just right. "Cosmorama" is a wonderful, well-written work that balances more crafty charted sections with some great improvised moments. Both the violin and cello play those charted parts with immense creativity and with stunning results. On "Contraste 2005", there is sublime balance of textures, the electronics, percussion and inside-the-piano explorations are utterly fascinating to behold, especially since it is difficult to tell them apart. I love the way the strings carefully weave their way amongst the other magical sounds. The written parts add some more haunting melodic ingredients. This disc is rich in detail and sounds best with no other distractions to take away its unique blend. - BLG

WILLIAM PARKER & HAMID DRAKE - First Communion + Piercing The Veil: Volume 1 Complete [2 CD Set] (Aum Fidelity 039/40) William Parker: bass, shakuhachi, slit drum, balafon, bombarde, dumbek; Hamid Drake: drums, tabla, frame drum, bells. "Way back in 1999 the vision struck AUM to bring William Parker and Hamid Drake into the studio to make a duo album; the proposal was made on the front steps of a church in June of that year. Hamid's flight from Chicago was booked shortly thereafter. The very first time that Parker & Drake performed together as a duo took place on April 1, 2000 at AUM HQ to a fully packed and rapt audience of some 80 strong. It was a magical Saturday night; the First Communion concert is here presented in its entirety/deeply fervent glory for the first time (and only here on this CD). On Monday the 3rd they entered the studio to record Piercing The Veil, which was originally issued in June 2001 to great acclaim and is herewith now beautifully back in print."

GUILLERMO GREGORIO/PANDELIS KARAYORGIS/NATE McBRIDE - Chicago Approach (Nuscope 1019; USA) According to reedist/composer Guillermo Gregorio, this trio with pianist/composer Pandelis Karayorgis and double-bassist Nate McBride evidences a very consistent group. And, from the opening strains of Assembly through the closing notes in Photogram, this is not only a consistent group, but a newborn trio - a true collective.
According to journalist Michael Rosenstein, "It's striking how the three play off of each other, drawing on each of their strengths while bringing out new shadings as well. Karayorgis' oblique angularities and impeccable sense of harmonic phrasing are there, only concentrated to a heady distillate. Here his playing is as much about the space around the notes as it is attention to the carefully placed angular motifs and shard-like chords. McBride is an insightful musician who is now receiving the attention he deserves. This trio setting brings out the muscular grace in his playing, as the dark timbres of his bass counter with the piano and clarinet. Gregorio's clarinet completes the picture. Throughout, his playing is infused with the warm woody tones and phrasing of the jazz clarinet vocabulary while filtered through his structuralist sensibility.
With these three, the lines between composition and improvisations are not only blurred, they are completely irrelevant. Listen to the trio's reading of Giuffre's Variation which snakes Gregorio's clarinet over Karayorgis' fleet Monk-like abstractions and McBride's freely walking counterpoint. Then jump to the improvised Chicago Space II which sounds as if it might be part of the same compositional series. The dark beauty of the pianist's Chicago Approach has strong synergies with the collective Lake Michigan Cues or the bass/clarinet duo Catalpa. And one can easily hear the structural affinities between the spider-walk across the angular theme of Don Friedman's Spring Signs, the collectively improvised Airplanes, and the geometric refractions of Gregorio's Space Modulator. With all of these pieces, they draw a thread between compositional form, a deep-seated internalization of the jazz tradition, and complementary strategies toward improvisation.

MAT MANERI/DENMAN MARONEY - Distich (Nuscope 1018; USA) Distich is the first duo CD with violist Mat Maneri and pianist Denman Maroney. Unlike many recordings by each musician, this recording is completely improvised, which brings in new aspects of each musician's approach, while retaining their significant strengths.
According to Roger C. Miller, a former student of Denman Maroney and an important musician in his own right, There are no rhythms in the traditional sense in this music. But rhythm runs through it like the pulsing of a pond in summer. Living, non-linear (life is constantly full of non-linearity). Try track 7, Span - this is a pretty wet environment - the stability of land is nowhere to be found. But there is plenty going on for those who have ears to hear it. This is a lot closer to representing life than Beethoven's 5th or Madonna's 'first time'.
As a pianist, I have delved into the "prepared" world, and I find Denman's technique fascinating. His Hyperpiano is, essentially, heavy metal. There is no heavier instrument (you try moving one of those!): the soundboard, the tuning pins, the strings are all metal. You can hear the metal in Denman's work; it is as much like machinery gone haywire as the cells in a tree dividing during the first warm days of spring.
If Denman's metallic glissandos obliterate any sense of dividing the octave into 12 discrete parts, then Mat's micro-tonalities eradicate superficial civilization every bit as much, even when he's not the one leading the glissando slides down those slippery slopes. And the two together create an extremely pleasantly disorienting reorientation of the hearing system.
This recording, which was recorded, mixed, and mastered in the 24 bit domain, includes liner notes from Roger C. Miller, perhaps best known for his work with Mission of Burma and Birdsongs of the Mesozoic.

WEASEL WALTER QUARTET [w/ HENRY KAISER & DAMON SMITH] - Revolt Music (UgExplode 20; USA) Featuring Weasel Walter on drums, John Gruntfest & Aram Shelton on alto saxes, Josh Allen on tenor sax, Damon Smith on 6-string & amplified contrabass, Randy Hunt on bass and Henry Kaiser on guitar. Formerly Chicago-based drum wiz, Weasel Walter, has been running the great Flying Luttenbachers since 1992, with more than a dozen discs to their name. The Luttenbachers blend free/jazz insanity with punk/rock intensity. Weasel moved to Oakland in 2003 and has become involved with a number of the Bay Area's best and most far out players. Contrabass great Damon Smith runs the consistently strong Balance Point Acoustics label, which brings together Bay Area greats with their European brethren. John Gruntfest is one of the best Bay Area saxists and can be heard on an early Henry Kaiser record, as well as being in the Eddie Gale Now Band.
'Revolt Music' blasts open with a rich, cathartic explosion howling reeds, bowed bass and full throttle drumming, This disc is a blast of screaming sax(es), bowed bass eruptions and some of the most focused and over-the-top drums ever. It is all too much and just enough for brave souls who love these types of free/jazz insanity. A symphony of cacophony, ready to kick your butt inside out! Weasel's massive drums are at the center of the cyclone, pushing everyone higher and higher. Although the mighty John Gruntfest is only on two tracks, it is someone named Josh Allen playing some immense free tenor sax on four cuts who is the most impressive. There is an amazing five-minute drums solo about halfway through this disc that must be heard to be believed, it is a short tour-de-force. Although our man Henry Kaiser is on only one track here, it is one of the highlights as it both over-the-top and quite focused. Kaiser matches Weasel's explosive drumming with some immense shredding noise. This is without a doubt the most extreme free/jazz excursion we've heard in a long while. It is only for the brave of heart. - BLG

POSITIVE KNOWLEDGE [OLUYEMI THOMAS et al] - Invisible Wisdom (Charles Lester 26-011; USA) Recorded live at The 2005 Vision Festival. Positive Knowledge is a most appropriate name for the ensemble led by west coast mystery man, Oluyemi Thomas. For the past half dozen years, Oluyemi has ventured forth from Oakland, California to finally play some gigs on the east coast, just once or twice a year for a handful of gigs. Each time I've heard/seen him perform, something magical happens. Positive Knowledge is his spiritual ensemble, sometimes just a duo with his wife & poetic vocalist Ijeoma, sometimes a trio, quartet or quintet. For this set he was joined by Kidd Jordan on tenor sax, Harrison Bankhead on bass and Michael Wimberley on drums. Oluyemi's main instrument is the bass clarinet, he also plays C melody sax, musette and hand percussion. The set started softly with spare, yet spirited playing. When "free jazz" is done just right, something very magical happens and this was a perfect example. Oluyemi's bass clarinet & musette, Ijeoma's voice and Kidd's tenor sax created a web of cosmic sounds very quickly as Harrison's intricate contrabass and Michael's drums burned quietly underneath. At this concert my fiance Huguette noticed that there were a bunch of birds gathered around one of the windows high above the stage, perhaps responding to Ijeoma's incredible bird-like voice. The set slowly built to a complete frenzy as Kidd's tenor and Oluyemi's bass clarinet began wailing together, reaching up for the skies. Kidd's energy playing is often unstoppable and here he completely cut loose, walked across the stage and played a frenzied duo with drummer Wimberley who stood up as he played and matched the Kidd's frenzy. Harrison Bankhead (on bass) and Michael Wimberley on drums, both took amazing solos, with Harrison's solo being one of this festival's best moments. For those of you love this type of free/ecstatic music and haven't heard Positive Knowledge live, please check out this fabulous release by a truly magic band. - BLG

ZU & NOBUKAZU TAKEMURA - Identification With The Enemy: A Key To The Underworlds (Atavistic 178; USA) "Our latest selection for 'The Pantheon' - Zu have once again defied convention in their ongoing, internationally-based collaborative explorations. After teaming with Ken Vandermark's Spaceways Incorporated for 'Radiale'; then the Blue Swede, Mats Gustafsson, for 'How To Raise An Ox' and with Mike Patton up a Victo last year, these Italian out-gods have turned up this time with Thrill Jockey artist DJ Nobukazu Takemura, to produce Identification With The Enemy: A Key To The Underworld. Identification is a genre-splicing adventure, a skin bracing blast of velodromic rhythm, loopadelia, avant-rock & jazz that is sure to be on the tips of la tastemaker's 2007-vintage tongues. This heady brew is wrapped in a superb, signature Scarful-designed digipak, worth the price of admission alone. Identification equals Bulletproof Sonic Action."

STEW CUTLER - Trio/Live (Fountainbleu 21014; USA) Featuring Stew Cutler on electric guitar, Gene Torres on bass and Garry Bruer on drums. Recorded live on tour in Eerie, PA, Syracuse & Rochester, NY. Stew Cutler is an old friend and one of my favorite guitarists. He bridges the gap between jazz, blues and rock and was once in Wayne Horvitz's band The President, which included Bill Frisell, Dave Tronzo & Elliott Sharp before Stew joined. Good company. This trio is a solid one who work just right together. The opener, "Left Behind", is a powerful right from the gitgo with a most memorable theme. It is Stew's and Gene's solos that really soar here. "Mourning Dance" is a dreamy piece with some fine volume swirls on the guitar and superb bubbling bass underneath. Although Gene Torres is not Stew's regular bassist, he sounds like a perfect choice. Gene has a great way of buzzing layers of lines that balance perfectly between Stew's earthy, soulful leads and Garry's righteous support on the drums. "East River Delta" features some fine slide guitar and fancy middle-eastern-like picking as well, it is the blues that connects both worlds. Even on "Whisper" which is just so sublime and laid back, Stew plays with elegance and quiet conviction. This a perfectly balanced disc that draws from the jazz, blues and rocks streams and is often quite engaging, when it mellows down easy. BLG

JOHN KRUTH - Eva Destruction (Crustacean 65; USA) Mad mandolinist, gifted songwriter and acclaimed author (of the great book on Rahsaan Roland Kirk), John Kruth, is another of our great local heroes that often flies below the radar, yet consistently records quirky gems that rarely get the recognition they well deserve. John is a longtime friend of the Violent Femmes, whose Brian Ritchie, Victor DeLorenzo and cohort Sigmund Snopek III all appear of this wonderful offering. The title track opens and sets the pace for the great things to come. John has written one of those post/psych classics that gets you going right away with a great hypnotic groove, incisive, humorous lyrics and a fine didgeridoo drone at the center. "Mrs. Chagall" is a delightful tale about the famous painter's wife that sounds rather like Daevid Allen at his quirky best. It is both surreal and quite mystifying. Kruth does a splendid job of creating these odd, little psychedelic soundscape instrumentals between his regular lyric-based songs. "Another Dimension" is a bit creepy with that droning sitar, organ, flute and deep dream narrator voice. "Majestic Ganesh" emanates from somewhere between Syd Barrett and Robyn Hitchcock, a hopeful prayer to a most positive Deity. "Dinner Music for the Mob" sounds like it was taken from a soundtrack for a spaghetti western and it is a perfect segueway to the next song. "Poor Friedrich" is a swell fractured fairy tale with some twisted vocals from Victor Delorenzo and John Kruth. Strange, yet still oddly mesmerizing. "Locomotives" was co-written by Peter Stampfel and has that same crazed glee that we often find in many of Stampfel's songs. "He has got a loose caboose, in his mind", sings John. No doubt!?! This wonderfully weird gem ends with three fine instrumentals that blend folk, psych and world music threads into a compelling sonic salad. Do not let this treasure remain buried. - BLG

MICHAEL GORDON/DAVID LANG/JULIA WOLFE [BANG ON A CAN]//BEN KATCHOR, artist - The Carbon Copy Buliding: A Comic-Strip Opera [CD+Book] (Cantaloupe 21040; USA) "The Carbon Copy Building is a dynamic and visually stunning trip through the gritty underside of urban life. Words and drawings by celebrated New Yorker comic-strip artist and recent MacArthur Grant recipient Ben Katchor are brought vividly to life by music from Bang on a Can co-artistic directors Michael Gordon, David Lang and Julia Wolfe. Rock band meets opera, The Carbon Copy Building is a full-length work for four singers and winds, keys, guitar, and drums; and is the first major collaborative work from the Bang on a Can co-artistic directors. The revolutionary show won The Village Voice 2000 OBIE Award for Best New American Work, and embraces the dark, witty humor of Katchor, known for his cult classic underground comic, Julius Knipl, Real Estate Photographer. After many years, the work is finally out on CD, accompanied by Katchor's beautiful illustrated libretto; in a limited edition mini hard-bound book +CD case."

PETER BLEGVAD & ANDY PARTRIDGE - Orpheus The Lowdown (Ape House 005; UK) A collaboration between Blegvad (singer/songwriter with a number of fine albums to his credit as well as some avant-garde leanings, having been a member of Faust, Henry Cow and Slapp Happy) and (Mr.) Andy Partridge (leader/principal songwriter of XTC, one of the great pop bands of the last 2 decades). This is released on Andy's own Ape House label and comes in a cool DVD-type oversized package. There seem to be some several things missing from music these days, one of which must surely be imagination. Given the sharp upturn in control and flexibility offered by the recording equipment and studios of the early 21st century, anyone working in music should be literally dumbfounded by the range of possibilities before them. Instead and more often than not, listeners get ever more of the same. Except here!
"Orpheus the Lowdown" is a carefully realized and intricate combination of words, sounds and images that offers no shortage of imagination or ideas. Here we have an ideal pairing: the respective backgrounds and output of Peter Blegvad and Andy Partridge couldn't be better suited to this project. Blegvad's words, (refer to his body of solo work and, of course, Slapp Happy) are mostly presented in the form of a poetry reading and are wonderfully inventive, playful and always beautiful: "Orpheus washes his hands in tears and thus anointed calls it a day though it is night". And, as remarkable as that sentence is, the sounds that support it bring the words to a better life. The aural quality is not unlike Partridge's work with Harold Budd on "Through the hill", but instead of approaching these pieces as "songs" they are instead set in sound. Ranging from the overt (bowling percussion) to the subtle (the ambience of a Savannah) the overall effect becomes something akin to musique concrete with an important distinction: these are not found sounds, they are clearly originated and composed to suit the language, just as the supporting images were assembled. The visual and aural pieces are both realized by taking seemingly unrelated elements and arranging them into a new, single whole. In both cases, the music and the photo-assemblages (which have a feel not unlike Man Ray's Ray-O-Grams) create a sense of strangeness, surprise and the discovery of something new out of the ordinary. What is represented here is on a completely different scale of thinking and effort when compared to your typical CD. If you've followed Blegvad or Partridge, you probably already have this: if you haven't, start now."- Kerry Leimer

JANET FEDER With FRED FRITH - Ironic Universe [CD + DVD] (Ad Hoc 19/20; USA) "The CD portion contains a series of six guitar solos by Janet Feder and six guitar duos with Janet and Fred Frith. Janet Feder is a fine acoustic guitarist from Denver, Colorado who is a professor at Naropa University in Boulder. She has just a couple of great solo efforts out, one on ReR. Janet plays acoustic guitar, but quite like anyone else. The first CD opens with a solo called "Opening", on which she sounds as if she is tapping on her guitar with some odd acoustic device. While Janet plays enchanting acoustic guitar, Fred adds bits of electronic swirls. Quite a magical combination. Even when Janet plays solo, she plays with our expectations by inserting the odd tapped or twisted note that either rings or is rather bent. She doesn't sound like she is playing solo, even when she actually is. This music is often laid back, somber and occasionally transcendent in nature. Janet sounds like Leo Kottke at times without some of Leo's flash or speed, yet she can be just as dazzling.
The DVD portion features two solo performances, one by Fred Frith from February of 2004 in Boulder, Colorado and one by Janet Feder from May of 2006 in Denver, Colorado. The solo performance by Janet is nice to watch and has incredible sound. Since Janet doesn't really play acoustic guitar like anyone else, it is great to see just what she is doing. Tapping on strings, rubbing strings, using an alligator clip or a similar device to add some unique percussive sounds to her playing. We also see Janet making a graph that seems inspired by the sounds she is making on her guitar. For Fred's solo performance, he is also playing an acoustic guitar, which is pretty rare for Mr. Frith. Without using any of the pedals that Fred usually utilizes, he still approaches the guitar in a unique way. He still uses a bow and a small candy tin while placing the guitar on his lap. No matter what he does or which instrument Fred plays, it still sounds like Fred Frith and no-one else. Two handed tapping on the fretboard and just using the guitar body as a percussive device, putting sticks between the strings and atpping on the strings with small wooden sticks. Only Fred Frith can spin his web of magic and make something completely magical and musical in the process. There is so little of Fred Frith on DVD, making this an even more important contribution for the serious sonic collector. Janet will play a solo set here at DMG on Sunday, February 18th at 7pm for free. Don't miss it!" - BLG
CD + DVD set for $32
GEBHARD ULLMANN/CHRIS DAHLGREN/ART LANDE - Die Blaue Nixe (Between the Lines 71216; Germany) Featuring Gebhard Ullmann on bass clarinet, soprano & tenor saxes & ocarina, Art Lande on piano & toys and Chris Dahlgren on double-bass, preparations & toys. German reeds master, Gebhard Ullmann has worked with a variety of trios for about 25 years, often with odd instrumentation, yet always unique in their sound. For a new trio Gebhard has again organized a distinctive one with pianist Art Lande and bassist Chris Dahlgren. Most folks know Art Lande from a few great records he made for ECM in the 70's, more recently I've seen Art on discs with Paul McCandless and Nguyn L. Chris Dahlgren, a fine former downtown-based bassist who works with Anthony Braxton, moved to Berlin a few years back and is involved with different projects over there.
'Die Blaue Nixe' is a 15-part suite with both written and improvised sections. "Blaue Nixe (Part 1)" is a most haunting, spacious piece for hushed bass clarinet, piano and acoustic bass. Each part of "Blaue Nixe" builds in tension and density as the trio explores the suspenseful terrain. Each member of the trio contribute a few of their own pieces. Gebhard plays some warm, thick tenor on "Ver. Anna. An den Ton Ges", sounding quite like Ben Webster or some other old master of the ballad, as Art plays some dream-like piano underneath, followed by a short, poignant bass solo from Chris. The trio seems to be playing toys and thumb piano on "Spieldosen" which is a soft, charming interlude. I dig Chris "BaBa" since it has a most hypnotic, layered and repeating bass and prepared bass figure at the center with Gebhard's spooky bass clarinet added as occasional spice. As the pace and tempo of the "Blaue Nixe" sections increases, each player gets a chance to stretch out with some fine solos from the bass clarinet, piano and bass. Art Lande occasionally plays, plucks and scrapes inside the piano and often to good effect, just as Chris also know how to stretch out his notes and create immense suspense as he hold the notes out into the air. Often superb, sublime and rich in subtle nuance. - BLG

NOEL AKCHOTE - J'en Doute Encore [Notes Sur de Travail] (Stupeur & Trompette 1015; France) Featuring Noel Akchote, Pakito Bolino, Maki, Yves Miara on guitars & voices, Didier Roth on percussion & guitar-on-table, Jo Thiroin on Farfisa & synth and Gilles Campaux on drums & voice. Although this was released in 1999, it is the first time I've ever seen or heard this disc. Noel Akchote is a gifted and odd guitarist who impossible to peg, since each of his half dozen or so releases are very different. Each of his discs contains a different theme, especially his three as a leader on Winter & Winter. This disc also seems to have a theme, which is not so apparent for me since the notes are all in French and my fiancŽ is not around to help me translate. I don't recognize the names of any of the six musicians here except for Jo Thirion who used to play with Etron Fou. "Glas" consists of somber layer of acoustic guitar(s) with some distant noise guitar just used sparingly. An old typewriter, a sleepy female spoken word voice and layers of somber noise guitar float through "Ceux Qui m'Arrivent". Noel loves to build layers of skronk guitar for "A Cran", which is played over a primitive beat. On "1 et 2 et 3 et 4", they repeat a riff and continue to count off again and again. Sort of like Ribot's old band Shrek. A cell phone rings and a mutated phone voice chirps along on ""Virgule", giving the piece a rather disorienting vibe. Samples of distorted baby voices run through "Souvent L'automne", as well as eerie layers of rumbling guitar noise. Very strange. I like the way Noel and the other pickers use different guitars just for their texture and sound, rarely playing them in a regular melodic way. They never show off their chops yet always create a mysterious world of swirling sounds. I can't really compare this to anyone else, so it is quite fascinating and in its own dimension. - BLG
CD $12 (Once again, we have just a half dozen copies, who knows for how long)
FRITZ HAUSER - 2 2 1 3 2 4 3 4 1 4 1 (11 Stucke fur Soloschlagzeug) (Sound Aspects 53; Germany) Solo drumming by the wonderful Fritz Hauser performing 11 compositions by an international cast of composers written specifically for Mr. Hauser and his unique drum kit. The contributing composers include Joey Baron, Warren Smith, Pauline Oliveros, John Cage, Franz Koglmann, Pierre Favre, Bun-Ching Lam and others. Fritz gives the layout of his kit on the tray card of this disc. Each piece explores a different approach or series of textures for the drum-set used here. I can ideas or sounds that emerge from these pieces that remind me of the distinctive approach that many of these musicians employ. Warmly and clearly recorded so that all you here is the drums, cymbals, and wooden blocks, nothing else but an occasional echo or resonating vibration. Who said that drum solos are/were boring? Certainly no one who listens to his disc. - BLG

VLADIMIR USSACHEVSKY - Electronic and Acoustic Works 1957-1972 (New World 80654; USA) In 1950, the Columbia University Music Department requisitioned a tape recorder to use in teaching and for recording concerts. In 1951, the first tape recorder arrived, an Ampex 400, and Vladimir Ussachevsky (1911-1990), then a junior faculty member, was assigned a job that no one else wanted: the care of the tape recorder. This job was to have important consequences for Ussachevsky and the medium he developed. Electronic music was born.
Over the next ten years, Ussachevsky and his collaborators established the Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center, which Ussachevsky directed for twenty years. The Center became one of the best-known and most prolific sources of electronic music in the world. This composer portrait (originally issued as CRI 813) features six of his pioneering works in the medium as well as two of his choral works, an aspect of his output that was just as important to him.
The final two works on this CD make extensive use of the human voice. The first of these, Three Scenes from The Creation (1960; rev. 1973), is based on texts from Ovid's Metamorphosis and the Akkadian creation epic Enuma Elish, telling the story of the primordial gods and their struggle to create order out of chaos. The recorded choral tracks were edited, assembled, and manipulated "with electronic accompaniment" in the studio. The Prologue was played in concert and also issued on a Columbia recording. The Interlude, originally Interlude and Conflict, dates from the same time and used recorded soprano and bass voices with electronic and concrte sounds and a live mezzo-soprano. In addition to the vocal and electronic sounds, recordings of piano, bell, and Chinese dinner plate sound are used, modified with the studio techniques that the composer had developed over the years.

HISTORIC RECORDINGS & IMPORTANT REISSUES:
MOONDOG - Moondog And His Friends (Moondog's Corner 02; Germany) "The music played by Moondog and his friends on this CD was originally released on vinyl in the early 1950s as EPIC LG 1002. Moondog's Corner is happy to present this great collector's item, as carefully restored and remastered by Andreas Torkler at the Sonopress Studio in Gutersloh (Germany), for the first time on CD in a complete edition - now including the two Suites from Side B of the vinyl. And as a special bonus for all Moondog fans, Moondog's Corner has added in some relatively new but hard to get selections of music by Moondog: In 1987, the American musician Paul Jordan recorded 'Logrundr XVIII in C-Sharp Minor' for his solo organ CD, Buxtehude, Moondog and Co. 'Fleur de Lis ' was included by the young German harpist Xenia Narati in 2005 on her debut album, Moondog Sharp Harp. And, finally, 'Sun Collector In 7/8' is an improvisation uniquely realized by Stefan Lakatos using Moondog's own percussion instrument, the trimba."

IGGY POP - Where The Faces Shine: Volume 1 [6 CD set] (Easy Action 016; UK) The Official Live Experience 1977-1981. Disc One: Aragon Ballroom, Chicago, March 28, 1977; Disc Two: San Diego State University, November 16th, 1977; Disc Three : Domino Club, Stockholm, Sweden, May 24th, 1978; Disc Four : Stardust Ballroom, Los Angeles, November 30th, 1979; Disc Five: Picadero, Barcelona, Spain, May 15th, 1980; Disc Six: Palasport, Bologna, Italy, June 18th, 1981. "Conceived to stop the huge flow of unauthorized Iggy Pop releases already in our shops, this is part 1 in an ongoing series to document the live performances year by year of the great Mr Pop. All unreleased material featuring some great musicians such as Glen Matlock , Brian James, Ivan Kral, Scott Asheton, David Bowie and Fred Smith. Extensive liner notes by ex-Mojo editor and author of a brand new book on Iggy due out next year, Paul Trynka. Unpublished photographs both in concert and backstage. Includes unreleased songs."
6 CD set for $58
TAJ MAHAL TRAVELLERS - Live Stockholm July, 1971 [2 CD set] (Walhalla 90384; Germany) New grey-area repro of what is a pretty grey-area release to begin with, originally released by the Drone Syndicate label in 2000. "Led by infamous Fluxus member Takehisa Kosugi, Tokyo's Taj Mahal Travellers were one of the prime examples of a band more heard-of than actually heard. Their vinyl legacy (the 1972 LP July 15, 1972 released on CBS/Sony Japan; the 1974 2LP August 1974 released on Columbia Japan and recently reissued by P-Vine as a 2CD; one side of the mythical Oz Days Live 2LP compilation released on Oz in 1973 and bootlegged as a single LP) could dig a hole in your wallet deeper than the Grand Canyon. However, the recent reissues have spread the gospel and so here is the chance to hear the young Taj Mahal Travellers live in Stockholm during their 'tour' through Europe in 1971. It's one 2 hour long improvised track. Enough free-floating higher key bliss to keep every grown-up space-cadet happy for a lot longer."
2 CD set for $30
KUNI KAWACHI AND HIS GROUP - Love Suki Daikirai/Kuni Kawachi & Flower Travelling Band (Walhalla 90379; Germany) Two great originals from Kuni Kawachi, digitally remastered. The Kuni Kawachi & Flower Travelling Band album was recorded in 1970. Includes massive guitar-work from Hideki Ishema, very much in the vein of Flower Travelling Band's catalog, with more of a progressive edge. Love Suki Daikirai released in 1972 is more straight-up dreamy psychedelia.
CD $20
KIMO MIZUTANI - A Path Through Haze (Walhalla 90383; Germany) Grey-area European reissue of this classic Japanese underground rock album, previously reissued on P-Vine. Kimio Mizutani was the guitarist in the excellent Japanese freakout group Love Live Life +1 and this is a reissue of his first solo album from 1971 (not 1991, as mentioned on the booklet here), originally issued by Japanese Polydor. Mizutani plays electric and 'folk' guitar, leading a largish rock ensemble (bass, drums, organ, Moog, vocals, etc.) through the paces of what is widely regarded as the true psychedelic masterpieces of the early '70s Japanese scene. Sensitive interludes (with accompaniment by the Toyama String Quartet and Etoh Wood Quartet), tasteful nods to progressive/fusionist extension and lovely psych guitar hoverings by Mizutani dominate the proceedings. A nice merger of hard rock conceptualization and the complexities that would evolve from it -- and until now, just about impossible to hear within the confines of Western society.
CD $20
JULY - July/The Second of July (Mason 56457; Germany) Reissue of the self-titled 1968 British psych classic along with The Second of July, a collection of demos from before their first LP. Legendary UK psychedelia.
"This album has come to be highly prized, mainly for the presence of "My Clown," which is considered to be one of the great psychedelic singles of all time. Tom Newman, who went on to glory as the engineer of choice for Mike Oldfield, handles the vocals for the majority of the album (the exception being Chris Jackson's "Crying Is for Writers"), as well as the majority of the songwriting. Tony Duhig, who later moved on to start Jade Warrior and participate heavily with Assegai, provides guitars and a strong sense of Indian music, although the greater part of his input is via warbling and groaning guitars and a fortunately blazing solo in the midst of the otherwise painful "Crying Is for Writers." Very good psychedelia, for the most part, but a bit dated in places and heavily influenced by much of the music coming from the direction of San Francisco at that time. The first six cuts are perhaps the most essential, going by the original vinyl release -- "My Clown" and "Dandelion Seeds" are delightful, while "Jolly Mary" is simply good fun. - Steven McDonald/AMG

OCTOPUS - Restless Night: The Complete Pop-Psych Sessions 1967-71 (Rev-Ola 180; UK) "Octopus' sole 1969 long-player Restless Night is something of a treasure among '60s Brit-psych fans due to its mixture of proto-progressive riffs, accomplished pop tunes and sparkling Beatlesque flourishes. The band evolved out of the thriving Hertfordshire beat scene that also gave us The Zombies, The Gods and those other cult pop-psych heroes Forever Amber. Octopus' music was colored by the use of keyboards and layered vocal harmonies in much the same way. By the time they'd been signed to Larry Page's Penny Farthing label in 1969, their sound had expanded to encompass the burgeoning progressive scene, the dawn of the solo troubadour and the omnipresent influence of The Beatles, illustrated perfectly by their live sets of the period. The first single and album opener 'The River' is a tough dancefloor groover complete with lysergic fuzz guitar and has appeared on several compilations while the album cover art is an eye-opening classic of the 'so bad it's good' school. Much to the band's horror, they discovered that Page had released a bastardized version of the album that omitted two of the original tracks and added the B-side of the single. Previous re-issues of the album have, not surprisingly, stuck to the erroneous tracklist but here at Rev-Ola we always strive to give you more. So here it is pop pickers, for the first time EVER, the original version of the Octopus album as the band intended... containing previously unheard (and uniformly excellent) tunes plus the usual plethora of previously unreleased bonus tracks, single sides, demos. Our edition also features new and extensive liner notes telling the full-on story of Octopus as they morphed from provincial beat favorites into psychedelic warriors."
CD $17
ORGANISATION [early KRAFTWERK] - Tone Float (Germanofon 941000; Germany) "Rare pre-Kraftwerk album from 1970, originally released only in the UK! On Tone Float, the line up consisted of Ralf Hutter on organ, Florian Schneider on violin and flute, Basil Hammoudi on vocals, Fred Monicks on drums and Butch Hauf on bass. The album features repetitive percussion and bass drum patterns, embellished with guitar, flute, violin and organ. Sections of the music are clearly '60s influenced and have an almost eastern feeling with scratchy violin and bongos. Tone Float was the last time that Ralf and Florian would rely on unrestrained expression and improvisation. With Organisation being a democratic five-piece band, it was difficult to develop a disciplined approach. Any comparison between Tone Float and the later Kraftwerk sound is hard to draw."
CD $17
KRAFTWERK - Kraftwerk (Germanofon 941001; Germany) Available again and we're told "with superior mastering!" Maybe not legit, but these records have never been legitly reissued (and unfortunately, probably never will be). "After disbanding Organisation (Tone Float, RCA UK-only release/1970) the duo Ralf Hutter und Florian Schneider adopted the name Kraftwerk (Power Plant). The album was recorded between July and August of 1970 in their new Dusseldorf studio. It was co-produced and engineered by Conrad Plank. When released in late 1970 the LP sleeve was designed by Ralf and showcased their adopted trademark -- the traffic cone. From the very opening notes of the LP, it is evident that the duo had put much of the meandering uncertainties of Tone Float behind them, arriving at a more disciplined form of music. Side one opens with 'Ruckzuck', a piece which was to become a live favorite of the duo. The 12 minute 'Stratovarius' follows and gives the impression of a more ordered structure than on the Tone Float LP. The tempo speeds up and slows down to various climaxes, ending with a plaintive violin and flute played over a minimal percussive beat. Side two opens with 'Megahertz' which begins with a low oscillating note slowly developing into waves of industrial sound. This finally gives way to a quiet passage which has an almost classical minimal tune, showing an early understanding of the sort of basic melody lines they were later to use to such effect. On the last track noise swoops from speaker to speaker, tension building as stabs of industrial sound are joined by a tribal drum beat. The intensity and direction of the duo was now clear as the track steps out of the shadows of their contemporaries as a portrayal of industrial sound."
CD $17
KRAFTWERK - Kraftwerk 2 (Germanofon 941002; Germany) Available again. "When the Kraftwerk 2 LP was released, Ralf and Florian had rejoined forces to continue Kraftwerk's music ideas. The LP was recorded at their own studio in Dusseldorf (KlingKlang) and the Star Music Studio in Hamburg. It was produced in just seven days between the 26th September and 1st of October 1971. It was co-produced by Conrad (Conny) Plank who once again played an important role. The Kraftwerk 2 album was originally released on the Philips label and is a musical extension of the first Kraftwerk LP. The LP is totally instrumental and Ralf is credited with rhythmusmashine (rhythm machine) as well as a host of other instruments. With no conventional drumming at all -- the first 17 minute track 'Klingklang' has an altogether softer sound than most of the first album. The track's constantly shifting tempo is due to the changing beat of the drum machine, giving the impression that it is a machine that is actually driving the music forward. This was in 1971 a totally new phenomenon and it is very much the 'Kraftwerk sound' being born."
CD $17
KRAFTWERK - Ralf & Florian (Germanofon 941023; Germany) "Kraftwerk's third album Ralf und Florian was released in November 1973 and its title is almost synonymous with a nickname for the duo. The front cover was taken by Florian's then-girlfriend Barbara Niemuller. The LP is a continuation of the ideas on the first two LPs, but the music has a much cleaner sound dominated by electric piano and soft electronic percussion. The first track 'Elektrisches Roulette' (Electric Roulette) is a rhythmically repetitive piece and I think that you can trace the later Kraftwerk sound in this song. The track features electronics, violin, electric piano and drums. It is very much a pop song and maybe the best track on the album.
Next comes 'Tongebirge' (A Mountain Range Of Tones) and it has closer resemblance to earlier LPs. It has Florian's typical flute arpeggios treated to a heavy dose of echo. 'Kristallo' is also the name of a hotel close to the studio and the song featured clear repetitive keyboard arpeggios showing Ralf further developing the automation feel to his playing. The track ends like a catalog of various recording tricks including backward tapes. 'Heimatklange' (The Sounds Of Homeland) which closes side two demonstrates the duo's increasing grasp of dynamics. Side Two opens with 'Tanzmusik' (Dance Music) a strange song with very simple wooden and metallic noises. The rhythm box is naturally present and actual hand claps appear towards the end of the song. The final track 'Ananas Symphonie' features some slide guitar but most important is the emergence of a primitive vocoder through which the words 'Ananas Symphonie' are discernable."

IF YOU'RE ALREADY SUBSCRIBED TO OUR NEWSLETTER, BUT SOMEHOW YOU'RE NOT RECEIVING THEM IN YOUR INBOX..
Many of your incoming emails are being blocked and you don't know it! Many emails like our newsletter are frequently blocked by aggressive spam filters being used by nearly all email services.
To help avoid this problem and get our newsletter:
Hotmail Users: Place the domain " downtownmusicgallery.com " on your Safe List, so that you can receive our emails. The safe list can be accessed via the "Options" link next to the main menu tabs. Also place the email address dmg@downtownmusicgallery.com in your address book.
AOL: Place the domain " downtownmusicgallery.com " in your Address Book. Also add the email address dmg@downtownmusicgallery.com to your address book.
Yahoo! Mail: If one of our e-newsletters is filtered to your 'bulk' folder, open the message and click on the "this is not Spam" link next to the "From" field. The same goes for any other e-mail you receive that doesn't belong there. Add the address dmg@downtownmusicgallery.com to your address book.
Other email services [Earthlink, GMail et al]: Place the domain " downtownmusicgallery.com " on your email filter's whitelist. You may need to search your email help menu for details on how to do this. Depending on software/version, they may call it a "whitelist," a "good list" or similar name. Adding the address dmg@downtownmusicgallery.com to your address book will help too.
