THE FIRST RELEASE ON OUR 'DMG ARC' LABEL [after two years, finally!!!]

SELWYN LISSACK'S FRIENDSHIP NEXT OF KIN With MIKE OSBORNE /MONGEZI FEZA/KENNETH TERROADE/HARRY MILLER/EARL FREEMAN - Facets Of The Univers (DMG ARC 702; USA) The First Release on our newly formed DMG ARC label is considered by many fans to be one of the rarest late '60s Euro/Brit avant jazz recordings
Originally released on the BYG associated 'Goody' label in France [in fact the only one of seven Goody releases that was an original release, and not a questionable reissue], the LP has commanded high prices ranging to $100 to $300 from collector's shops and auction websites including eBay. From Clifford Allen:
"To most historians of the "new music", creative improvisation took a somewhat different turn in Europe during the late '60s than it did in the United States, concentrating less on African roots (understandably) and building on both European folk forms and innovations in academic art music and other time arts. Yet in England there was a greater confluence of African musical forms and influence, which is crucial in distinguishing vanguard British improvisation from its brethren in other parts of Europe. Chris McGregor, a white classically-trained pianist from Cape Town, brought the Blue Notes with him to Germany in 1966, finally settling in London. This was the ensemble that, ostensibly "led" by a white South African (though clearly drawing more from kwela and township music as well as jazz), introduced drummer Louis Moholo, bassist Johnny Dyani, trumpeter Mongezi Feza and reedmen Dudu Pukwana and Ronnie Beer to the European jazz community. In addition to the South African scene, expatriate improvisers from Jamaica (reedmen Joe Harriott and Ken Terroade) and Barbados (trumpeter Harry Beckett) were also at the forefront of London's new music community.
Drummer Selwyn Lissack, though often not mentioned in the same breath as the above, is nevertheless an interesting piece of the British-South African puzzle. Born and raised in Cape Town, Lissack emigrated to England in 1967 (independently of the Blue Notes) on his way to New York - visa problems kept him in Europe until the end of 1969. Lissack was active on the Cape Town scene in the early 60s, despite anti-integration laws that often broke up musical associations (he's white), but the pull of more fruitful work opportunities elsewhere was undeniable. Upon joining the London community, the young drummer began organizing sessions in his apartment with John McLaughlin, Mike Osborne and other luminaries of the scene, while also studying with Philly Joe Jones (at the time living in Kensington). Lissack's style merges the tidal waves of Elvin and Sunny Murray with the fleetness and occasional bombast of Roy Haynes and Philly Joe, and is more rooted in bop than Louis Moholo.
The result of two years of weekly rehearsals with the British and South African avant-garde, Facets of the Universe, released in a limited edition by the BYG subsidiary Goody in 1969, features Lissack in a sextet with Feza, Osborne (alto and clarinet), Terroade (tenor and flute), South African expat bassist Harry Miller and American bassist and multi-instrumentalist Earl Freeman, a stalwart on many BYG-Actuel recordings, heard here also on piano, flute and reciting his poetry. Produced by Aynsley Dunbar vocalist Victor Brox, Facets of the Universe consists of two sidelong pieces: Terroade's Love Rejoice, retitled Friendship Next of Kin for this LP; and a lengthy collective improvisation inspired by Freeman's poetry entitled Facets of the Universe (though confusingly the poem also includes the line Friendship Next of Kin). Yet this music has little in common with strains of British or South African jazz of the time; rather, the approach is somewhere between Sunny's Swing Unit, the Art Ensemble (of Chicago) and fiercer Brotherhood of Breath dates.
For this reissue on New York avant record store Downtown Music Gallery's own ARC label, Friendship Next of Kin is presented in two versions: an edited version which includes a drum solo excised from the original take (replayed here), and the album version without the solo. With masters apparently long-gone, the original vinyl in all its French-pressed glory was used, and it is a credit to the engineer that the muddy mix has been brought up to clear, crisp levels that do well in separating the musicians and the music. Friendship (under its alternate title) appeared in somewhat more frantic form on Terroade's BYG session (Love Rejoice, Actuel 22, recorded a few months prior to this date), with reedmen Ronnie Beer and Evan Chandley (Cohelmec Ensemble), pianist Francois Tusques, drummer Claude Delcloo, and Freeman and Beb Guerin on basses. The tune is a weighty, churchy dirge much like those penned by Sunny Murray and Frank Wright that the leader directs into a fast tempo to gird a brittle, smeared Feza contribution, the composer's paint-peeling tenor pyrotechnics (under which Freeman switches to piano), followed by a collective lead-in to Osborne's thoughtfully searing contribution (of the three horn players only Osborne maintains the tempo and character of the original theme, however distorted the notes get) and, finally, Lissack's restored drum solo, a dense thematic exposition recalling his opening salvo on trumpeter Ric Colbeck's Aphrodite. After a brief collective improvisation, the joyous processional through the back streets of Cape Town and Kingston returns to close the piece.
Facets of the Universe is something altogether different from the post-Ayler material on side one, and echoes Ra and the AACM in its wide-open spaces, with Freeman reading a highly disparate imagist poem over a stew of tympani, finger cymbals, organ, marimba (courtesy Brian Gascoigne), piccolo and clarinet that recalls Joseph Jarman's reading on Song For or David Moore's with Muhal Richard Abrams and Anthony Braxton on Levels and Degrees of Light. Following this otherworldly declamation, Feza, Terroade and Osborne take off into a maelstrom of brass and reed smears over surging bass and percussion, an ecstatic tidal wave of activity brought on by the tension of words and poetic ideation. Such a setting necessarily focuses the attention on Freeman, who went on to lead the Sound Craft Orchestra in the early 1980s, which featured leading lights of the New York underground, and recorded a hideously rare LP with clarinetist Henry Warner and percussionist Phillip Spigner, The Freestyle Band. His poetry and arpeggiated piano on Facets of the Universe add to the mystery of the uniform of aviator goggles and union work suit. Facets closes just as sparsely as it began, with the last gasps of tenor and pocket trumpet encircled by castanets, celeste, wooden flute (Freeman again) and gongs as it comes full circle. In a way, this is not surprising, as the session was taped on the night of a lunar eclipse.
The record sank upon its release, even by BYG offshoot standards. Goody was a bootleg label that released unauthorized versions of records on Delmark, Metronome and Clifford Thornton's Third World imprint, and Selwyn Lissack's one and only LP as a leader was the closest thing to a "legitimate" release in the series. Unfortunately, Claude Delcloo butchered both the English liner notes and the track listing, leaving some to wonder who the poet was on side two, which along with poor mastering and shoddy pressing and even the omission of a major solo by the leader (!) resulted in nothing less than a shameless mishandling of one of the heaviest slabs of improvised music of the late 60s. Lissack made one more startling appearance as a sideman with Osborne and bassist Jean-Francois Jenny-Clarke on trumpeter Ric Colbeck's lone LP for Fontana (The Sun is Coming Up, 1970) before finally heading to New York to become involved with holographic sculpture and design (he taught and assisted Salvador Dali in holographics), still practicing music but concentrating his research on three-dimensional forms.
Despite its inconsistencies at the hands of its label, Facets of the Universe is truly a fascinating document of the Pan-African avant-garde captured at a place where European, African, American and West Indian roots merged to create two universal improvisations. What more could one have asked of a single opportunity to record as a leader?" - Clifford Allen
From Andrey Henkin:
"Recorded September 1969: London, England. The career of white South African Selwyn Lissack is a mysterious one. It is unclear when he left, but he was in England in the late '60's. He played in a group with Lol Coxhill; recorded Facets, his only album as a leader; and played on The Sun is Coming Up by Ric Colbeck (whatever happened to him?). He then gave up music and is now a well known sculptor, working mainly on holographic sculpture. This album has a stellar lineup, including alto flamethrower Mike Osborne and fellow South African Harry Miller. It also borrows two participants and the side-long track format of Kenneth Terroade's Love Rejoice (BYG/Actuel, 1969).
Free Jazz is best categorized geographically. Groups like the Spontaneous Music Ensemble and Iskra 1903 cast the mold that will forever be equated with improvisational music from the UK-sparse, understated and often quite tedious.
However, this is definitely NOT what Facets of the Univers or its players are about. Players like the always-intense Mike Osborne, like Harry Miller, who could and did play just about everything with everybody, like Kenneth Terroade, who participated in the American expatriate free jazz scene in Paris that was well documented on the BYG Actuel series. The approach to extemporization is in fact closer to the Actuel model than one might expect. The brief march-like melody of the title track is merely a jumping off point for various solos, both unaccompanied, and in tandem with others. Lissack plays with an appealing sense of urgency, each line always rolling out towards the next phrase, keeping the music mobile. The piece ebbs and flows as three horns simultaneously ascend to frenzied peaks, then descend into near silence. The second piece "Friendship Next Of Kin" is more influenced by contemporary classical music in its sparseness. It does not disappoint in energy as the intensity rises steadily for the second half. It is perhaps only marred by some bizarre spoken word that is unfortunately common to this kind of music. The liner notes did not originally identify the piano player or speaker but it can be safely assumed that it is Earl Freeman [and passerby Louis Moholo provides some incidental percussion]." - Andrey Henkin, AMG

FOUR NEW HATOLOGY RELEASES:

JOHN CARTER & BOBBY BRADFORD'S NEW ART JAZZ ENSEMBLE - Seeking (a/k/a Revelation) (Hatology 620; Switzerland) This CD reissue brings back clarinetist John Carter's first recording and the earliest example of his mutually beneficial teaming with trumpeter Bobby Bradford. Formerly out on Revelation, this Hat Art reissue is most surprising in that Carter mostly plays alto and tenor, with a rare appearance on flute and only one selection ("Sticks And Stones") on clarinet, the instrument that he would soon give up the others for. Less surprising is that the music is most influenced by Ornette Coleman although Carter's style was already showing individuality and the lyrical Bradford always had more technique than Don Cherry. Bassist Tom Williamson is excellent in support and drummer Bruz Freeman comes across as the most conventional player on the date. These freebop performances hold one's interest, vary moods and manage to be both free and melodic. ~ Scott Yanow, AMG

STEVE LACY - New Jazz Meeting Baden-Baden 2002 (Hatology 631; Switzerland) Featuring Steve Lacy on soprano sax, Philip Jeck on turntables, Christof Kurzmann & Bernhard Lang on electronics, Peter Herbert on double bass and Wolfgang Reisinger on drums. This synthesis of jazz, composition and electronic music was made possible above all by Steve Lacy's extraordinary openness, which - as he himself said - has often brought him together with musicians whose roots are not in jazz. Steve Lacy was a searcher to the very end. We are going to miss Steve Lacy's overwhelming passion for sonic exploration. - Reinhard Kager [Please note: 16 of the 61 minutes found here were previously released of Hat 607.]
CD $20

COLIN VALLON TRIO - Ailleurs (Hatology 636; Switzerland) The members of this trio all share a strong awareness of sound quality and timbre, which sets them apart from other musicians. Three distinct instrumental voices - Colin Vallon's 'singing' piano, Pat Moret's 'full reverberating' bass and Samuel Rohrer's 'polyvalent' drums - blend into a highly complex ensemble sound; here, too, the band hashardly anything in common with the traditional jazz piano trio conventions. What is nearer to their heart than virtuoso pirouetting is weaving and elaborating concise sketches of moods and atmospheres, feverish emotions or bizarre combinations of sounds into dense textures. Here three artists are at work who are unable to speak with evasion or artifice. In other words: three true jazz musicians. That is, musicians who understand jazz as a living art form, and thus music that is played con amore. Tradition is neither glorified nor denied, instead, it stimulates the musicians to discover and express their own personal identity. - Tom Gsteiger
CD $20

CHRISTIAN WEBER With HANS KOCH/MICHAEL MOSER/MARTIN SIEWERT /CHRISTIAN WOLFARTH - 3 Suits & A Violin (Hatology 634; Switzerland) What Christian Weber and Co. have achieved on 3 Suits & A Violin is a music that eschews formulaic approaches and instead temper their group sound in dense laminations of texture and sonic residue. The result is an arresting music that combines elements of group-improvised minimalism, electro-acoustic improvisation and avant-garde chamber music into a texturally rich exploration of detailed noise texture... In Christian Weber's work noise has become closely connected to the repertoire, that his music sits very comfortably within this, as if to question if, then, noise has such a natural and reflexive occurrence on the instrumental practice, so then, he constructs pieces which are bathed in these static residues and phantom details. - Dean M. Roberts

NEW ON VICTO:

WILLIAM PARKER & THE LITTLE HUEY CREATIVE MUSIC ORCHESTRA - For Percy Heath (Victo 102; Canada) This is the sixth colossal disc from William Parker's wonderful downtown all-star orchestra. This is live from the 2005 Victoriaville Musique Actuelle Festival and it consists of one long suite dedicated to the late Modern Jazz Quartet bassist Percy Heath, an inspiration to William Parker. William's propulsive bass is at the center of the storm here, quickly pulsating as the band swirls tightly around him. On the left side, we find the trombones, bari sax & tuba playing this one line over and over. On the right side, there are 5 saxes & 3 trumpets, playing their intersecting lines together. Ace Gold Sparkle drummer, Andrew Barker, does a fabulous job of balancing the dynamic waves soaring back and forth. This is truly exciting, intense and exhilarating music. What is great is how this builds in layers, different groups of horns playing around one another in different patterns. Inspired solos emerge from the waves and erupt as the rest of the band expands and contracts beneath. There is always a few different dialogues going on simultaneously, as the various waves move organically through the currents connecting them. William Parker's buzzing bass is forever vibrating, sometimes quick, sometimes slow, yet always holding everything together. His bowed bass solo on the third section is pretty phenomenal, but it is his charts and focus as the leader that is most impressive. From time to time, there are these occasional melodies that rise from the chaos and shine like little lights in the turbulent sea. I recall the sound at the concert being a bit chaotic, yet this disc sounds incredible, everything is so well defined. Bravo to our local heroes once again! - BLG
CD $15

THE NO-NECK BLUES BAND - Nine for Victor (Victo 103; Canada) New York's occasional uptown heroes, The No-Neck Blues Band, are an enigmatic bunch of crazy folks. Their rare gigs are often unpredictable, they range from the ridiculous to the magical side of improv and anywhere in between. You never know how many of them there will be or which ones will be wearing strange costumes. This set was recorded live at the Victo New Music Fest in May of 2005 and I recall it being one of their better performances. I am sure that some the other more demanding new music or jazz snobs would probably not agree. Rather than presenting their set in its entirety, the No-Neckers have edited it down to a more focused set of sub-sections, which still flow together pretty well. The instrumentation includes el. guitars, acoustic & electric bass, sax, lots of percussion, some keyboards and odd voices. This music sounds tribal, free-flowing, sorta psychedelic, naively cosmic, throbbing, fun, strange, magical, drone-like, etc. Perhaps this is the most superbly recorded and well-edited of all No Neck discs, it is certainly one of, if not their best. There is a weird section with bizarre, unintelligible mumbled voices that you just got to dig. Wild, wooly and oddly wonderful. - BLG
CD $15

MY CAT IS AN ALIEN - Il Suono Venuto Dallo Spazio (Victo 101; Canada) Enregistre 'live' au 23 Festival International de Musique Actuelle de Victoriaville, le 20 mai 2006. "Each album or performance by My Cat Is an Alien is an invitation to leave on a cosmic journey, without resorting to the numerous cliches of the space music genre. Think instead of a synth-less Ash Ra Tempel coming across the quiet improvisation current. Think of stripped-down music made of looped droning guitars, caressed percussion, toy instruments and toy microphones being used while boldly disregarding all printed warnings. Think of a cosmos glorifying its vacuous interstellar space, the silence that amplifies the smallest particles of sound. Or don't think at all and just let yourself be swept away." - Francois Couture

NEW ON 'AD HOC'É

JANET FEDER With FRED FRITH - Ironic Universe [CD + DVD] (Ad Hoc 19/20; USA) On these disks, Denver-based acoustic guitarist Janet Feder furthers her exploration on the instrument, and teams up with another of the world's most respected guitarists, Mr. Fred Frith. A whole gamut of strange techniques, musical strategies, beautiful tunings and ambiences are employed; The outcome is sure bliss for fans of modern, instrumental music. Part avant-garde, part classical, part folk, in fairly equal proportions, this approach has never before been attempted with such striking success. The DVD portion is separated into 2 segments: Janet's videos were beautifully shot and edited by Hollywood film-maker David Quinn, in a professional studio as she played live. Each track is presented in a different setting to embellish the diverse performances. Fred's video is one, longish improvised session from a recent concert in Boulder, Colorado, also professionally filmed and edited by Quinn. Fred abandoned his electric guitar in lieu of his Taylor acoustic for the event, bringing his playing into a new realm, while still managing to put his many toys (bowls, chains, brushes, dowls etc.) to good use.

THE WORK [TIM HODGKINSON/BILL GILONIS/MICK HOBBS/RICK WILSON] - Slow Crimes (Ad Hoc 15; USA) Originally issued on vinyl in 1982, this music, along with that of compatriots This Heat and Unrest Work & Play, set the stage for a unique type of new British Invasion; one that seemed to absorb the complexity and slickness of Progressive Rock, whilst throwing its aesthetics to the dogs, in lieu of the energy and power of early Punk. THE WORK were amongst the first few to purposefully break their own mold in an attempt to break new ground, concomitantly creating music that seems more comfortable resting on a bed of nails than precious laurels. The drums are primal, and hold the entire band together in a polyrhythmic way that was, at the time, unheard-of in Punk music. The vocals are offered unapologetically, sometimes in semi-screams of anguish and insolence. The guitars & bass chug along, daring the listener to tap their foot in time to regain one's bearings. Over it all is the collective penchant to add experimental noise, to further a state of shock. The group worked tirelessly within these guidelines on the road for 2 years before disbanding, only to reform some seven years later, releasing two additional and equally excellent albums.
CD $16

TONY CONRAD - Joan Of Arc (Table of Elements 77; USA) "Tony Conrad is a founding father of 'minimalism' and a giant in the American soundscape. The indefatigable Conrad kept busy during the Revolution Summer of 1968. In addition to his reunion recordings with John Cale (documented in the Cale set New York in the 1960s), Conrad starred in Ira Cohen's legendary film The Invasion of Thunderbolt Pagoda and made extensive solo recordings, including 'Joan of Arc', available here for the first time. One of Conrad's personal favorites, it's a long piece for pump organ, in which he conjures both searing white heat and malignant gothic dread. An excerpt was used as the soundtrack for the Piero Heliczer film of the same name, but Conrad feels a greater affinity with that year's Cohen film; accordingly, Cohen graciously provided restored stills from Thunderbolt Pagoda for the packaging of this release. Cohen's sumptuous imagery -- which Jimi Hendrix described as 'looking through butterfly wings' -- features a blissed-out and shirtless Conrad replete in pencil mustache, mascara and blood-red turban. The man is just downright cool -- about as cool as Hendrix, and almost always louder."

TIM BRADY - [Guitar Obsession] (AM 156; Canada) This extraordinary solo disc features Canadian guitarist and modern composer Tim Brady on various electric guitar with devices, loops, tapes, computers and bows. Mr. Brady uses five different guitars and each piece was recorded live or in the studio in four different locations, although 8 of the 11 pieces are from Tim's own studio. "GO" features Tim on what sounds like an army of acoustic guitars with minimal devices. The quick picking is astonishing as layers of guitars pile up and expand, sounding like the League of Crafty Guitarists. "Yellow, Add Green" is completely different as the guitar is distorted with a heavy metalish sound and Tim even wails on some of those high-speed fusion/metal licks, throwing in segments of more melancholy playing as the alien guitars are pushed to the sides. "As Softly Sounds" is lovely, laid back piece with some sublime jazz guitar playing and complex chords. "Frame 22: Switch" is a short suite in 5 parts that keeps switching between different styles and sounds. Backwards guitars, warped guitars and assorted electronics mutate guitar sounds in a variety of different ways. Strangely fascinating. "Le Chant des baleines" was composed by Jean-Francois Laporte and is for bowed guitar with metal extension & resonator. Eerie, scraped and bowed strings vibrate and drift and does sound like "an evocation of an underwater soundscape", as the notes say. "unplugged" (Alexandre Burton) is for detuned, unplugged electric guitar & computer. The frenetic guitar consistently erupted and triggers different sounds. Spectral composer Tristan Murail's "Vampyr!" gets a crazed heavy metalish treatment and turns out to be an unexpected delight. Concluding with Laurence Crane's "Bobby J", which is an elegant piece with nice volume pedal swirls. This is a must for all guitar-freaks with adventurous taste. - BLG

LORI FREEDMAN - 3 (Trios) (AM 157; Canada) Featuring clarinets sorceress Lori Friedman in three trios with some of Quebec's best players: Rene Lussier (guitars) & Martin Tetreault (turntables), Jean Derome (saxes, etc.) & Rainer Wiens and Nicolas Caloia (contrabass) & Danielle Palardy Roger (percussion). This disc was recorded live over three nights and later reworked in a studio. I've caught Lori Freedman some half dozen times of the past few years, playing solo, in duos and doing improv, at Victo, Guelph and also at the Vision Fest. She is an excellent musician, her solo set at Guelph in 2005 was one of the best sets that year. For this fine release, Lori works with three different trios of Quebec's finest players, each trio quite different in sound. The first trio features our friend Rene Lussier on guitars and Martin Tetreault on turntables, often without records. There is an odd balance between Rene's diverse and ever-changing guitar approaches and Martin's electronic-sounding turntables manipulations. Lori is in the middle, twisting her clarinets into a variety of odd shapes and sounds. At times I am reminded of Zorn's cartoon music, always changing and using that sly humor behind the unexpected twists and turns. The trio with Jean Derome on sax & objects and Rainer Wiens on prepared guitar is also a strange one. As Rainer plays Frith-like quiet guitar soundscapes, Jean plays his charming, fractured early Zorn-like mouthpiece manipulations. Lori is a good match, also bending her notes a similar way and blending perfectly with her two gifted partners. The third trio features Nicolas Caloia on double bass & Danielle Roger on percussion. I am unfamiliar with Nicolas but I do know Danielle from different disc on AM, as well as seeing her in a duo with Frith last year in Montreal. This trio is the most minimal, slowly weaving their sounds cautiously around one another. Some of these pieces were reworked in the studio, here we find Lori's snake-like clarinet panning around in the mix, often closely mic'd with careful attention to each sound. This is quite a strong batch of trio improvisations that work together well as a whole connected work. - BLG

NEW ON 'BALANCEPOINTACOUSTICS'..

AURORA JOSEPHSON/JOELLE LEANDRE/DAMON SMITH/MARTIN BLUME - cruxes (Balance Point Acoustics 10; USA) Vocalist Josephson and bassist Smith have been contributors to a strong free music scene in the San Francisco Bay Area. Smith's Balance Point Acoustics label has been issuing recordings that document their intriguing collaborations. For this set, the two are joined by German drummer Martin Blume (who collaborated with these musicians on 2003's Zero Plus) and French bassist Joelle Leandre. Although this is an ad-hoc group, they obviously speak the same language, the results making this an excellent recording of conversational free Jazz. The instrumentation of voice, two low string instruments and percussion assures that this grouping will have a unique sound. It achieves its ultimate expression on the final studio track, Praxis, where both basses are sliding buoyantly over and around each other as Josephson acrobatically leaps atop the lines and Blume provides a chattering accompaniment. Although the majority of these tracks feature full group improvisation, several tracks feature brief duets and trios from the group. The deep sound of the strings of Leandre and Smith put Josephson's vocals in stark relief on Siberia Of The Mind. Josephson and Blume duet on Napoleon's Favorite Wine with each focusing on small gestures that become larger and end in a grand gesture. It's one of the best free improvs I've ever heard that lasts under two minutes. More importantly, it doesn't feel like a fragment but a complete statement. The live tracks are longer and have a more leisurely pace. But only the 20 minute final track seems a bit overlong. And while it has a few brief dead spots, after a bit of meandering the four find common ground and the music takes off again. Besides, this track has some of the most compelling music of the set, most notably when Leandre and Smith play an arco drone in accompaniment to Josephson's stratospheric flight. Cruxes is yet another example of the fertile music that's been brewing in the Bay Area for a number of years now. - Robert Iannapollo, Cadence

AND RESTOCKS ON THESE TWO RECENT 'BPA' TREASURES...

AARON BENNET/JOHN BUTCHER/HENRY KAISER/DANIELLE DEGRUTTOLA /DAMON SMITH/JEROME BRYERTON - Sextessense: A Tribute to John Stevens & SME [Spontaneous Music Ensemble] (BalancePointAcoustics 11; USA) Featuring Henry Kaiser on guitar, John Butcher & Aaron Bennet on saxes, Danielle DeGruttola on cello, Damon Smith on acoustic bass and Jerome Bryerton on drums, plus Kurt Newman on guitar on one track. John Stevens is perhaps the most influential and most beloved of all British modern "jazz" drummers, he certainly cast a large shadow on the entire European avant/jazz scene since his the mid-sixties. As a leader or co-leader of so many diverse and influential ensembles, Spontaneous Music Ensemble (SME), an original member of Company, Amalgam, Detail and John Steven's Away, his playing embraced so many different streams, free/jazz, Ornette-like grooves, fusion, South African and rock-like groove-space. He played in duos and trios with Derek Bailey, Evan Parker, Frode Gjerstad, John Butcher and Gary Smith. He worked with musicians as diverse as Bobby Bradford, Dudu Pukwana, Alan Holdsworth, Julie Tippetts and John Martyn.
So, it makes perfect sense that a musicians like Henry Kaiser, John Butcher and Damon Smith, would want to do a tribute to this great man, spirit, teacher, drummer and multi-bandleader. Much of Stevens' best work was done with the legendary SME, which le led for nearly thirty years (1967-1994), with changing personnel on almost every recording. Although SME were known as a "free" ensemble, it is Steven's direction that made them so cohesive and often so magical. I get the feeling that the same vision or direction was used to guide this extraordinary session. Henry has chosen some like-minded players here and although I am unfamiliar with Mr. Bryerton, Mr. Bennet & Mr. Newman, everyone fits just right into the often nimble, yet focused world of directed improv. Most carefully recorded so that one can swim within sea of rich details. This is one of the finest improv dates I've heard in recent memory, you get the feeling that there is some close listening and responding going on here. Nice to hear from the wonderful cellist Danielle DeGruttola, whose playing can only be heard on a few other discs with Henry. An extraordinary session on all accounts. - BLG

HENRY KAISER With DEREK BAILEY/TOSHINORI KONDO/JOHN OSWALD /DAMON SMITH - Domo Arigato Derek-Sensei! (Balance Point Acoustics 202; USA) This is stunning heartfelt tribute to Derek Bailey, the grand-daddy of freely improvised guitar music who passed away on Christmas day of last year. Henry Kaiser, who was greatly influenced, as well as a friend and collaborator with Mr. Bailey, performs solos, duets and trios with the following: Derek Bailey, Toshinori Kondo (trumpet), Sang-Won Park (chango), Davey Williams (guitar), Motoharu Yoshizawa (contrabass), Larry Ochs (soprano sax), Greg Goodman (piano), Andrea Centazzo (percussion), Damon Smith (bass), Mototeru Takagi (tenor sax), Henry Kuntz (tenor sax), Kiku Day (shakahachi), and Charles K Noyes (percussion)! Henry fills this long disc with some 15 tracks challenging improvisations. Henry also speaks about Derek as he performs on a few tracks, something that Derek often did instead of writing letters to friends. Henry also explains and demonstrates some of the techniques to Derek helped invent. What I dig most about this extraordinary disc is that the spirit and influence of Derek Bailey flows through this entire, wonderfully organized collection of music from folks who owe a debt to this marvelous and sorely missed innovator. - BLG

The diverse talents of the Rosenbaums have allowed them to record music traditions in a way few others could have done. Dust-to-Digital is proud to announce this project in an attempt to keep alive the music they love so dearly. Art Rosenbaum has been recording American traditional music for half a century -- and in the process produced over 15 LPs and CDs, two hardcover books, and archival material deposited in the Library of Congress, Indiana University, and University of Georgia archives. In 2007, Dust-to-Digital will release a 5CD set of Art Rosenbaum's recordings. The presentation will be in book form, with notes and commentary on all the tracks, many of Art's own drawings and paintings as well as Margo's photographs, and of course, five CDs. HOW LOW CAN YOU GO? [STRING BASS V.A.] - Anthology of the String Bass 1925-1941 [3 CD Box + book] (Dust To Digital 004; USA) The first anthology ever of the string bass; A 3CD box set in a cardboard box; 96-page book. Original recordings from 1925-1941, from the legendary archival label Dust-To-Digital (that previously brought the world the beyond-elaborate 'Goodbye, Babylon' and Fonotone Records boxsets).
"Not so long ago, the string bass stood tall and proud -- roughly the length and breadth of a poor man's pine coffin -- in every musical aggregation throughout the land from Bangor to Buenos Aires, from the highest high life to the lowest lowdown: From tuxedoed symphony ensembles to tipsy Calypso bands to honkytonkers in oil-field dives, from elegantly gelled tango orchestras to jazz combos in unspeakable speakeasys to methed-out rockabilly trios right off some flatbed: you can be damned sure Johnny Cash wouldn't have been able to walk the line without bassist Marshall Grant keeping him honest. But somewhere along the line, the upright acoustic bass was snatched from its hallowed place atop the sedans (special carriage) and show-stages and relegated to the trash-heap of history in favor of Leo Fender's sleek electric cousin, plugged in to compete with amplified guitar and drums. Now the stand-up bass makes its appearance mostly in limousine-liberal Lincoln Center jazz benefits and hardcore bluegrass bands -- or as a comical hayseed prop in retro hillbilly outfits. And yet in that span between the turn-of-the-century tuba blaring from an Edison cylinder and today's synthesized-bass loops heaving from every SUV on the pike, the hypnotic pull of the old-school string bass remains. A musical craft handed down by calloused, bandaged fingers, it wrought a mighty saga of bottom-heavy rhythms that rattled the walls of many a venue and anchored many an historic recording session. Without it, the revolutionary sound of American mongrel music of the last century would have been thin gruel indeed." --Eddie Dean, from the liner notes.

I BELONG TO THIS BAND [V.A.] - 85 Years of Sacred Harp Recordings (Dust To Digital 006; USA) This current collection of Sacred Harp singing is the first to offer a full range of recordings by traditional Sacred Harp singers from 1922 to the present, and is a companion to the Sacred Harp documentary by Awake, My Soul: The Story of the Sacred Harp, the first feature documentary about Sacred Harp singing. This CD is unique in a number of respects. It contains several prewar and mid-century recordings never before released on CD, some of which have never been released at all. Sacred Harp singing is typically a community musical and social event, held at all-day singings and conventions in the rural South. It is characterized by mass participation, full-voiced singing, lack of instrumental accompaniment, and rotation of song leaders. Growing out of the singing-school movement of the 18th century, and preserving the music of the first American composers, it came to be associated in the deep South with church and community homecomings and decoration days, and with sumptuous "dinner on the ground" spread in the churchyard at noon. It differs from shape-note gospel singing in that the repertory is largely pre-Civil War, and is relatively fixed in one of the 20th-century revisions of the original 1844 oblong tunebook by B. F. White and E. J. King. Although The Sacred Harp was called "the book oftenest found in the homes of rural Southerners other than the Holy Bible," the tradition was ignored by the cultural elites of the nation and region. For 85 years, commercial record producers and documentary folklorists have tried to capture this "harmonic complex of singular charm," as Jackson described it. Surprisingly, though, the earliest recordings differ sharply from the powerful sounds heard at today's singings. Many reflect the more informal uses of Sacred Harp music in the family circle, while others show the influence of professional gospel quartet singing. Displaying a wide range of ensembles and vocal styles, this release includes recordings of quartets and other groups who recorded for major record labels before World War II, private studio recordings of the 1950s and 1960s, and digital field recordings of large contemporary singing. This collection also weaves three important strands of this music: early commercial recordings, cut on 78s in the 1920s through the 1940s, home recordings made by small groups of singers in the 1950s, and contemporary "all day sacred harp singings." The very fact that these separate strands appear together here on one CD is part of what makes this collection so unique, yet the historical breadth of the material is also noteworthy. Cardboard arigato pak with 16-page saddle-stitched booklet.

FONOTONE RECORDS [AMERICAN PRIMITIVE V.A.] - Fonotone Records 1956-1969 [5 CD Box] (Dust To Digital 003; USA) Fonotone Records 1956-1969 [5 CD Box] (DTD 003CD). Massive 5CD set of American Primitive music unearthed for the first time (in various styles: Jug Band, Country, Old Time, Blues and Bluegrass), recorded and documented by Joe Bussard's 78-RPM Fonotone label, 1956-1969 - not one track previously on CD before. Incredible package featuring 131 tracks over 5 discs, 160-page perfect-bound book, 17 full-color postcards, 3 record label reproductions in souvenir folder and a nickel-plated Fonotone Records bottle opener(!) - all packaged in a deluxe cigar box. The label that gave us one of the most elaborate packaging presentations of the modern era (Goodbye Babylon, DTD's first release from 2004). What started as a conversation about Fonotone Records metamorphasized into this 5CD box set, for which no stone went unturned. Master reel-to-reel tapes, unplayed for decades but still pristine, were painstakingly remastered; forgotten Kodak slides in old cigar boxes were dusted off and retouched; and musicians of all stripes who had disappeared more than 35 years ago were tracked down. Their stories, and the story of Fonotone, the last 78-RPM record label in the land, are told here with words, pictures and music. Take a look-see, give it a listen, and get a rare portrait of a long-gone America.

Notes and essays by musicologists and scholars. Contributors include Lynn Abbott, David Evans, Ray Funk, Anthony Heilbut, Kip Lornell, Luigi Monge, Paul Oliver, Opal Louis Nations, Bruce Nemerov, Guido van Rijn, Ken Romanowski, Tony Russell, Doug Seroff, Dick Spottswood, Warren Steel, David Tibet, Gayle Dean Wardlow, and Charles Wolfe. 200 page book with Bible verses, complete lyric transcriptions, and notes for each recording, plus over 200 illustrations. According to Greil Marcus: "The best country-religious music collection I have ever heard."

WHERE WILL YOU BE CHRISTMAS DAY? [GOSPEL V.A.] - Where Will You Be Christmas Day? - Holiday Series Vol 1 (Dust To Digital 002; USA) 24 Recordings from 1917 - 1959. "Following up last year's critically acclaimed Goodbye, Babylon box set, Dust-to-Digital is proud to announce our new Holiday Series, curated by musicologist Dick Spottswood. Based on his popular radio show in Washington, D.C., our series is initiated with a Christmas Gift, a compact disc full of rare yuletide gems. Just as Goodbye, Babylon showed the many sides of gospel music, this CD shows many sides of Christmas - from Jesus born in the manger to Leroy Carr spending the holiday in jail. Some of the artists featured include Alabama Sacred Harp Singers, Butterbeans and Susie, Fiddlin' John Carson, Cotton Top Mountain Sanctified Singers, Lightning Hopkins, Los Jibaros, Kansas City Kitty, Lead Belly, Lord Executor, Maddox Brothers and Rose, and Bessie Smith. Together they provide a stark contrast to the commercialized Christmas we know today..."

SPECIAL SALE!! TWO LEGENDARY JAZZ RECORDINGS - ONLY ON CD FROM JAPAN AT GREATLY REDUCED PRICES [originally $30 each]

ARCHIE SHEPP - The Magic Of Ju-Ju (Impulse!/UCCU 5240; Japan) Recorded April 26, 1967. On this 1967 Impulse release, tenor saxophonist Archie Shepp unleashed his 18-minute tour de force "The Magic of Ju-Ju," combining free jazz tenor with steady frenetic African drumming. Shepp's emotional and fiery tenor takes off immediately, gradually morphing with the five percussionists -- Beaver Harris, Norman Connor, Ed Blackwell, Frank Charles, and Dennis Charles -- who perform on instruments including rhythm logs and talking drums. Shepp never loses the initial energy, moving forward like a man possessed as the drumming simultaneously builds into a fury. Upon the final three minutes, the trumpets of Martin Banks and Michael Zwerin make an abrupt brief appearance, apparently to ground the piece to a halt. This is one of Shepp's most chaotic yet rhythmically hypnotic pieces. The three remaining tracks, somewhat overshadowed by the title piece, are quick flourishes of free bop on "Shazam," "Sorry Bout That," and the slower, waltz-paced "You're What This Day Is All About." ~ Al Campbell, AMG

DON CHERRY With SONNY SHARROCK/ALBERT MANGELSDORFF/BERNT ROSENGREN/KARL BERGER/JOACHIM KUHN et al - Eternal Rhythm: Lie Ankara 1969 (MPS/Universal UCCU 5184; Japan) 1968: Eternal Rhythm is a masterpiece on several levels. It was one of the earliest major examples of the idea that it was possible for any and all musical cultures to exist simultaneously, a philosophy that rejected any innate musical hierarchy and had no trouble placing the earthiest blues alongside the most delicate gamelan. It was also a summit meeting between representatives of the American and European jazz avant-garde, black and white, dismissing as meaningless both the cautious attitude of American jazz musicians toward Europeans edging onto their turf and the tentative stance of Europeans playing a music that was not "theirs." More importantly, Eternal Rhythm exists as an utterly spectacular, movingly beautiful musical performance, one of the rare occasions where the listener has a visceral sense of borders falling and vast expanses of territory being revealed for the first time. Cherry balanced compositional clarity, wild free improvisation, and a totally inclusive musical consciousness in a manner seldom achieved, resulting in a cohesive, spellbinding session. His own playing throughout on both trumpet and flute is at his highest levels, but the contributions of his fellow musicians are just as amazing. Special mention should be made of guitarist Sonny Sharrock, whose "glass shards" approach is in full bloom here, and vibraphonist/pianist Karl Berger, who throws himself with sublime abandon into both the gamelan and blues aspects of the piece. If only the pallid "world music" of the succeeding decades had followed this model! Eternal Rhythm is Don Cherry's masterwork and one of the single finest recordings from the jazz avant-garde of the '60s. It is required listening. ~ Brian Olewnick, AMG

David Adler of Jazz Times says of the cd, "On this CD, Horton's virtuosity and imagination exceed (his) remarkable Subtextures CD of 2003. These pieces cover a wide sonic spectrum and feature improvisation and ensemble writing at its highest level." Horton's ensemble will include Michael Blake (tenor sax), Tom Beckham (vibes), Ben Allison (bass), Gerald Cleaver (drums).
10PM - THE BEN ALLISON QUARTET
Ron Horton ö trumpet, Steve Cardenas ö guitar, Ben Allison ö bass, Gerald Cleaver - drums; A band that knows exactly what it is doing at all times - Allisonâs compositions are complex yet slyly surprising ö you donât realize exactly how catchy they are until you find yourself humming them." (NPR). Cowboy Justice, Ben's most forward thinking album to date, reached #1 on the CMJ (College Music Journal) radio charts and with it "Allison changes parts÷timekeeping, mood-setting, harmony, counterpoint÷more often than Peter Sellers in an Ealing Studios movie, and just as naturally and wittily" (Absolute Sound). The band's been busy touring in Europe and the US and is at the height of its powers.
