Who are or who were Hatfield & The North and what is the big deal about their reunion?
Hatfield & the North formed in 1972, out of the ashes of Robert Wyatt's Matching Mole. Robert Wyatt was beginning to work on the third Matching Mole album, when he fell out of third floor window at a party for poet Lady June, breaking his back and ending his career as one of the most creative drummers and bandleaders in the UK.
Former Egg, Khan and Arzachel, keyboard wiz, Dave Stewart, formed Hatfield & the North in 1972 with Matching Mole guitarist Phil Miller, former-Caravan bassist and lead vocalist Richard Sinclair and Ex-Gong drummer, Pip Pyle. The first Hatfield album was released in 1973 on the newly formed Virgin Records, along with other progressive and/or Canterbury related artists like Robert Wyatt, Gong, Henry Cow and Mike Oldfield.
That first self-titled (And now... Hatfield & The North) album sounds as fresh, whimsical and creative as it did 33 years ago. The album contains two long suite-like album sides which are continuous, something that their Canterbury forefathers, Soft Machine, did throughout much of their history. The first Hatfield album is the best of many worlds, combining wonderfully complex arrangements and astonishing playing, as well as the ever-enchanting vocals of Richard Sinclair.
The guests on that record include vocals by Robert Wyatt on "Calyx" and the sax playing of Geoff Leigh, the first person to leave Henry Cow after they signed to Virgin. The second Hatfield album, "Rotters Club" was released in 1974 and is almost as wonderful as the first. The band was legendary in the UK, Europe and the US, but never got to play here. They sadly broke up in 1975, but soon morphed into the equally great and mostly instrumental group, National Health, with three of the four Hatfield members involved.
Hatfield reformed in 1990 and again went their separate ways soon thereafter, only to reunite again this year to do Baha Prog fest in Mexico, The NEARFest in Bethlehem, PA and will finally make their New York City debut this Sunday, June 25th at 8pm at the Bowery Poetry Club. Dave Stewart has been replaced by British keyboard wiz, Alex Maguire, who has played with former Soft Machine saxist, the late, great Elton Dean.
This is a rare opportunity to catch one of the finest exponents of the so-called Canterbury Scene, a magical era which some say never really existed except in the minds of journalists and fans worldwide, yet continues to find devotees from the around the planet no matter what anyone believes. Downtown Music Gallery is immensely proud to help make this historic gig happen, so please come on down and have your minds blown! - Bruce Lee Gallanter

WE RECENTLY GOT THIS COMMENT FROM A CUSTOMER IN THE MOST RECENT ORDER THEY PLACED...
"...There was one other thing--on a different topic--that I wanted to mention also.
Recently I ordered ten CDs, nine of which were Black Saint/Soul Note (the shipping date was 6/7). Three of the nine BS/SN discs seem to be CD-Rs: they don't have the labels (orange-yellow for SN, rainbow-colored for BS) that these discs standardly have, and their reverse side is a light green, not silver. (The front is predominantly black, with two pairs of three white lines and a small logo, and the words 'Compact Disc Digital Audio' are omitted.) Have other customers mentioned that they have received CD-Rs? It seems very unusual that a commercial label would send out CD-Rs in otherwise standard packaging (including the sticky paper that seals BS/SN jewel cases); I wondered whether your stock had been tampered with somewhere further up the line.
I do not know if these discs are mistakes or not; but if they are, would it be possible to obtain the CD version? (I would prefer a CD to a CD-R.)
Thank You, X"
WE RESPONSED THUSLY...
"Hi X,
Being a collector myself, and also mindful of the possible permanence issues of CD vs CD-R, I would also prefer a stamped/pressed CD copy.
Unfortunately, these ARE the official copies obtainable at the moment, and the practice is widespread from many independent labels trying to stay afloat, as seen from our prior experiences as hands-on merchants.
This is how it occurs:
When small runs of an album are made on CD, it is almost as cheap to print packaging for, say, 5000 CDs, as it is for 1000 copies, so most labels print the 5000 booklets and back-covers, even though they only manufacture, say, 2000 CDs on their first run.
If the item sells well, they then repress 1000, or 2000, or 3000 copies whilst having a bit of a savings for not having to also pay printer's set-up fees for a second run on the packaging.
For those of you who have been involved in small [or even big] run manufactures of pressed/stamped CDs [not cd-rs], you know the typical contract with the pressing plant has a clause that states that you will get anywhere from 90% to 110% of the number you actually asked to be made, and you will be expected to pay for exactly what you got, EVEN IF it is higher than the number you asked for.
And of course similar overruns may sometimes grace what you get from the printer of the packaging as well.
This quite often results in odd amounts of packaging being left over - not enough to justify another pressing of even 500, let alone 1000, copies - but cost-effective small runs of CD-Rs are and have been made by many labels to use up the leftover packaging, when in fact they just don't see that there are many more sales remaining at present to justify a larger run.
When you see this kind of thing manifest, it is generally a signal that you won't ever see another pressing at all, and the item will soon go out of print
Regards, Manny at DMG"

'The Topography of the Lungs' is considered a landmark recording in the history of improvised music. Back in print as a CD for the first time and for the first time in many years. Two previously unissued pieces from the same 1970 session have been found and added. 53 minutes.
CD $20
AKI TAKASE QUINTET - Tarantella (psi 06.03; UK) (1997) AKI TAKASE (piano), ALEKS KOLKOWSKI (violin), MAURICE HORSTHUIS (viola), TRISTAN HONSINGER (cello), NOBUYOSHI INO (bass). Aki Takase has been resident in Berlin for many years now and her relationship with Deutschland Radio resulted in several memorable sessions. Aki felt that this 1997 piano quintet (piano plus strings) deserved a wider audience and psi readily agreed. A fantastic session from an outstanding group of players. 65 minutes.
CD $20
ADAM LINSON - Cut and Continuum (psi 06.04; UK) (2006) Adam Linson made his debut recording with the ElectroAcoustic Ensemble's latest CD for ECM, The Eleventh Hour. Here is his first solo recording featuring his real time processing and sampling in a new approach to solo bass. 60 minutes.
CD $20
ROSS BOLLETER - Secret Sandhills And Satellites (EMANEM 4128; UK) (2001-5) Pieces for ruined pianos and pianos on the edge of ruin. For several years now, Ross Bolleter has been scouring around Western Australia and beyond looking for ruined pianos. He has found the right music for each instrument, and performed and recorded it. This collection contains some recent choice items recorded around Perth and Alice Springs. The main work, inspired by an Aborigine painting, is the 28-minute Secret Sandhills, a generally slow-moving work spliced together from performances on six ruins. There are also 10 shorter and generally faster Satellites, some of which were performed on two ruined pianos simultaneously. Fresh new sounds from decaying old instruments. 68 minutes.

TOR SNYDER'S IRREPRESSIBLE SPIRIT - Irrepressible Spirit (self-released; USA) Tor Snyder's Irrepressible Spirit features Tor on guitar, Raphe Malik on trumpet, Daniel Carter & Raqib Hassan on saxes, flute, trumpet & shenai, Don Pate on bass and Rakalam Bob Moses on drums. You should no doubt be familiar with the late Raphe Malik and Daniel Carter from the dozens of sessions that both have played on for the past couple of decades. The amazing rhythm team of veterans Bob Moses and Don Pate have been playing with our good friend, spirit/force and guitar great Tisziji Munoz for nearly as long as well. I've admired the fine fretwork of Tor Snyder from the handful of gigs he has done at DMG, as well as intense guitar orchestra gigs from a couple of years ago. Although all but one of the 15-pieces is shorter than 7-minutes, the spirit flowing through all of this is certainly "irrepressible". Most of these pieces are extracted from longer free/improv sessions so that nothing goes on for too long. Tor sounds like he is leading the group and directing the energy. He is often just creating textures and sounds with his electric guitar and not soloing that much. Tor sometimes sings strange sounds to match his guitar, adding a haunting quality to the proceedings. He and their bassist and drummer often play in waves together as the horns swirl and sail on top. I dig that much of this more laid back, dreamy and not too over-the-top. Everyone takes their time and gets a chance to stretch out, the bass and drums occasionally soloing superbly together. A most appropriately titled ensemble. - BLG

Five tracks recorded in France and Slovenia on the group's first tour, in 2004. CINC will start a North American tour on the 10th of June. A number of folks who caught this trio at Tonic last week said that they were pretty amazing!

KEN VANDERMARK & PAAL NILSSEN-LOVE - Seven (Smalltown Superjazzz 119; EEC) 'Seven' is the third recorded collaboration between Vandermark and Nilssen-Love, following Dual Pleasure (2002) and the double CD Dual Pleasure 2 (2004), both on Smalltown Supersound. It's the most concise to date in the series, running to only three tracks and 44 minutes playing time. The album was recorded live at the duo's home base, the Bla club in Oslo, on April 1, 2005. As is to be hoped with such excellent players, the session finds both in top form, with a constant sense of urgency, passion and adventure, and with plenty to say. The opening track, First Hit, Second Fall (26 minutes long), alternates between condensed, fiery interplay and more abstract passages where the duo investigate the myriads of tones and timbres of instruments. Nilssen-Love enjoys twisting time patterns, and he manages to push Vandermark into stratospheric flights even when he's only playing his cymbals. Vandermark erupts with ideas and his charged playing keeps the music fresh and surprising. The fourteen-minute piece Open Too Close is a muscular, sometimes even brutal tour-de-force in the great tradition of saxophone/drums duos created by John Coltrane and Rashied Ali. Experiencing such boundless energy can leave the listener breathless (but satisfied). Vandermark usually finishes his concerts with a short piece on his clarinet, and this album's closing track, Universal Funeral, is one of those - but Nilssen-Love decorates the mournful theme with metallic background noises that deny any possibility of accepting the piece as a simple elegy. Seven is dedicated to the late Norwegian bass player Bjornar Andresen, one of the icons of the Norwegian jazz community, who passed away three weeks after the Crimetime Orchestra's last recording session. Vandermark and Nilssen-Love prove yet again that they can create a very expressive painting, full of different colors and textures, and one that is fresh and relevant.

THE THING [MATS GUSTAFSSON/INGEBRIGT HAKER FLATEN/PAAL NILSSEN-LOVE] - Action Jazz (Smalltown Superjazzz 123; EEC) After raking in huge press for 2004's "Garage" album (4 stars in UNCUT) & playing with Four Tet & Prefuse 73, MATS GUSTAFSSON, PAAL NILSSEN-LOVE & I. FLATEN come back with their strongest work yet. Here they bring the power of their unique mixture of raw power, filthy sound & punk fury to bear on songs by Ornette Coleman, Swedish jazz legend Lars Gullin, Japanese jazz master Yosuke Yamashita, noise duo Lightning Bolt, Cato Salsa Experience & 2 originals. Recorded analog w/only acoustic instruments so what you hear is the sheer power of breathe, wood, metal & muscle. PURE ACTION JAZZ!
CD $15
JAZKAMER [JAZZKAMMER: LASSE MARHAUG/JOHN HEGRE] - Metal Music Machine (Smalltown Supernoise 118; EEC Jazzkammer, or Jazkamer as they call themselves now, are the Norwegian king of noise, LASSE MARHAUG & JOHN HEGRE (of KAPTEIN KALIBER among others). During their 8 year existence they has explored different kinds of sound expressions & cooperated with different musicians, but the core has always been Marhaug and Hegre. In typical Jazzkammer manner their new album is a metal album! And they insisted on calling themselves Jazkamer, & to be on their own label called Smalltown Supernoise. They have made the album that Lou Reed did not make, taking Reed at his word & made metal machine music in the right meaning of the words. Jazkamer is part of the tradition of bands like Animal Collective, Wolf Eyes, Boredoms, Black Dice, Sunno))), Earth, and Lightning Bolt. Bands that mix the avantgarde with noise, kraut, metal & punk, creating new music with an unpretentious DIY aesthetic.
"Nordic noise makers summon the electronic metal apocalypse. Not so much a tribute to Lou Reed`s label-baiting milestone, but an album of metal music made with machines. To create this digital monster Lasse Marhaug and John Hegre, aka Jazkamer/Jazzkammer, enlisted an imposing ensemble of Norwegian talent to sculpt their normally obtuse laptop noise into intense new shapes. With Ivar Bjornson of black metallers Enslaved, Jurgen Traen of Toy and members of Manngard on board, the results are a rock sound of the darkest metal cast. Friends Of Satan is an eruption of looped drums and jagged riffing, followed by a slab of stark, pulverising doom (The Worms Will Get In), a rabid trash (Abomination) and sheets of mangled amplifier damage (Occult Glider). Little wonder they needed their own Smalltown Supernoise label to release this beast" (4/5, Andrew Carden, MOJO)

BANG ON A CAN & DON BYRON - A Ballad For Many (Cantaloupe 21036; USA) "After years of live collaboration, Don Byron and Bang on a Can have put together a spectacular follow-up to Byron's Grammy nominated Ivey Divey. The acclaimed clarinetist shows off his talent as a composer on A Ballad For Many, his new CD with the genre-blurring Bang on a Can All-Stars. The disc is dedicated to ground-breakers, with large-scale works dedicated to one-of-a-kind comic/satirist/star Ernie Kovacs and the Tuskegee Airmen, the famous African-American WWII-era fighter squadron. Lovingly recorded by Byron long-time producer Tom Lazarus, A Ballad For Many features the Bang on a Can All-Stars at their best, whether negotiating breathtaking cello-piano duets or rocking out with one of Byron's great grooves. This CD creates a unique opportunity to hear Byron's music interpreted by a group other than his own."

R LUKE DuBOIS - Timelapse (Cantaloupe 21035; USA) With any highly conceptual music idea, there's a risk of having the scope of the idea outweigh the final output. R. Luke DuBois is a musician and inventor who came up with the idea of "time lapse phonography." In doing so, he captures the sonic frequencies of longer pieces of music and compressing them into short segments, which he then blurs together into weird, hazy fields of ebbing ambience.
Referenced in hundreds of internet blogs with over 175,000 hits on his site, Dubois's BILLBOARD is a composite of all the Billboard #1 Hits from 1958-2000. DuBois analyzed all 857 songs digitally, and created a "spectral average" - a sonic summation of all frequencies in the song - for each one. He then allocated each song 1 second for each week it was #1 on the charts. The resultant 37-minute-long piece contains beautiful washes of sound, and serves as a unique chronicling of the history of US pop charts, and the songs' continually-changing longevity, tonality, and production.
DuBois applies this theory to two other classics Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier, both books in 5 minutes (Clavier); and the entire soundtrack of Casablanca (Time Goes By).
A genius's redefinition of how we think about and listen to music, the resultant disc is an ambient masterwork. "I didn't write this music, and I didn't curate this music. I'm just figuring out a way to present it for people to listen to." - DuBois on NPR's Studio 360

KENNY WHEELER With JOHN ABERCROMBIE/JOHN PARRICELLI/ANDERS JORMIN - It Takes Two! (CAM 5016; USA) 'It Takes Two!' features Kenny Wheeler in an instrumental context with which he has not previously recorded. Throughout he is partnered by guitarists John Abercrombie and John Parricelli and the Swedish bass virtuoso Anders Jormin.
The musical sensitivity of all those involved has resulted in what is, even by Wheeler's sometimes introspective standards, an extremely intimate sounding recording. Indeed, the shades, textures, and contrasts of the two guitars (harp-like, steely and incisive by turns), Jormin's bass and Wheeler's horns create something akin to a conversation to which the listener eavesdrops. (Simon Spillett)

RICHARD THOMPSON With JUDITH OWEN/DEBRA DOBKIN - 1000 Years Of Popular Music [DVD + 2 CD set; ltd ed] (Cooking Vinyl; USA) Single DVD with Two Audio CD's This latest Richard Thompson release, 1000 Years of Popular Music, actually contains songs from the 11th Century, miners songs and even"Oops! I Did it Again!" All songs are performed by a trio, with Thompson on acoustic guitar and vocals, Debra Dobkin on percussion, and songstress Judith Owen adding vocals. "The idea for this project came from Playboy Magazine - I was asked to submit a list, in late 1999, of the ten greatest songs of the Millennium. Hah! I thought, hypocrites - they don't mean millennium, they mean twenty years - I'll call their bluff and do a real thousand-year selection. My list was similar to the choices here on this CD, starting in about 1068, and winding slowly up to 2001. That they failed to print my list among others submitted by rock's luminaries, is but a slight wound - it gave me the idea for this show, which has been performed occasionally, and will hopefully receive a few more airings. The idea is that Popular Music comes in many forms, through many ages, and as older forms get superceded, sometimes the baby is thrown out with the bathwater - great ideas, tunes, rhythms, styles, get left in the dust of history, so let's have a look at what's back there, and see if still does the trick. What appears on this CD is a performance, rather than a chronological, distillation of several different shows - hence some gaps in the 17th and 18th centuries, and too much weight on Music Hall and Rock & Roll - we just felt that some performances weren't quite captured - perhaps on Part Two?"

MICHIEL BRAAM'S WURLI TRIO - Hosting Changes (BBB 8; Netherlands) This features Michel Braam on Wurlitzer 200-A electric piano, Pieter Doumma on semi-acoustic bass guitar and Dirk-Peter Kolsch on drums & percussion. This is the third disc from Michiel Braam's trio, although this one features a different trio and Mr. Braam is playing a (Wurlitzer) electric piano this time round. This trio played Tonic last week during the Vision Fest, so sadly I had to miss their rare performance. Wurlitzer pianos have quite a distinctive sound and also be heard on the current disc from Michael Blake. On the opener, "Gosh, Ethics Gan", the rhythm team is playing a quick, nervous drum n' bass groove as Michel swirls furious lines of notes tightly with them. "Congesting Hash" (this is Amsterdam, right!?!), features another quick, quirky, funky rhythm with Michel spinning fast double-handed lines over that sly groove. Much of this reminds me of Herbie Hancock's Headhunters band, but more stripped down to a trio and not as obviously commercial. What makes this more interesting is that Mr. Braam takes more chances and layers a number of intersecting lines as the rhythm teams holds down the various grooves. A strong blend of catchy melodies, odd rhythmic schemes and some provocative soloing from both Michel and the bassist. - BLG

LOTTE ANKER/MARILYN CRISPELL/MARILYN MAZUR - Poetic Justice (DaCapo; Germany) [special ltd time price!] "The three artists well developed sense of communication and creativity resulted in extraordinary exiting music. The music touched delicate punctual patterns and violent colourfull explosions and in the same time expressed clear intensions, clear directions and clear conclusions-briefly a stream of captivating improvised music."
- Berlingske Tidende/ Denmark. "Ankers compositions not only tap CrispellØs lyricism but the rigorously edged aspect of her playing that is only approximated with the term "post-Taylor". Anker has similar attributes to her work on soprano and tenor, buttressed by a strong sound on both horns... In the process Anker and Crispell bypassed erudition and found something both wise and endearing" - Vancouver Jazzfestival, Jazz Times Magazine.

DAY & TAXI [CHRISTOPHER GALLIO/CHRISTIAN WEBER/MARCO KAPPELI] - Out (Percaso 23; EEC) One of the great things about this year's Vision Fest is that it featured a number of Europe's best musicians (Paul Rutherford, Klaas Hekman & Torsten Muller), as well as a great and under-recognized trio called Day & Taxi. This trio is led by soprano & alto saxist, Christoph Gallio with an evolving rhythm team. They've been around since the early nineties and have some half dozen discs so far. The line-up for the Vision Fest included Christian Weber on bass and Michael Griener on drums, although drummer Marco Kappeli can be found on this disc that was recorded in 2004 and released this year. 'Out' features some twenty tracks, all but two under 5-minutes, a bunch under one minute. Christoph writes these odd tunes that have unpredictable rhythmic twists and turns. What I dig about this music is that it is always interesting and unpredictable, yet is never very far out. It is as if Christoph has these little ideas or fragments that need no development, since they are still engaging in more subtle ways. I am often reminded of Steve Lacy's trio and the way they dissected and shined on Monk songs. I also dig the way Christoph sputters and bends notes on his sax without the harsh sonorities that often make most folks feel uncomfortable. In concert, he does some silly dancing around and makes some funny faces, adding some humorous spice to his charming blend creative playing. Some of that infectious spirit is also apparent when you hear this music on its own. - BLG

RED ROCKET [SIMON JERMYN/JOACHIM BADENHORST/SEAN CORPIO] - Mitten (self released; EEC) This young trio from Belgium features Simon Jermyn on guitar, Joachim Badenhorst on tenor sax & clarinet and Sean Carpio on drums. One of these characters (Simon, I believe) dropped off two self-released discs and was persistent to get me to check them out. I'm glad I did. Red Rocket is an odd blend on avant jazz, rock and other downtown-like quirkiness. They sound more than a bit like that great trio with Hilmar Jensson, Andrew D'Angelo or Chris Speed & Jim Black. Often two members of the trio will play their intricate parts together as the third member solos. I also like the way they often deal with textures and sounds instead of soloing, the bowing of the guitar, odd noise fragments that are difficult to figure who is playing what sound. Their guitarist sounds like he double tracking or looping certain parts, as he repeats one line and then plays a counter-melody or part. They often keep their sound skeletal, rarely very complex, yet there is enough things changing and textures varying to keep this always quietly stimulating. Since we only got a few copies, I'd best end here. Simon hopes to move to NYC in September, so until then only a few of you will get your greasy paws on this modest treat. - BLG

AMPLIFIED: FROM THE KITCHEN ARCHIVES [V.A.] - New Music Meets Rock 1981-1986: Kitchen Archives Vol 3 (Orange Mountain 24; USA) "Amplified: New Music Meets Rock, 1981-1986 is the third release in a series of CDs compiled from The Kitchen's archive that documents historic concert recordings at The Kitchen from the early 1970s to the mid-1980s. While the first two releases, New Music, New York 1979 and Steve Reich and Musicians, Live 1977 focused on major figures of new and experimental music from The Kitchen's first decade, Amplified moves into the early 1980s, representing a vocabulary that emerged from the avant-garde, minimalist, and No New York scenes in the 1960s and 1970s in New York City. Highlights from the CD include the layered guitars of Rhys Chatham's works, classical cello played through electronic effects pedals by Arthur Russell, a Christian Marclay piece created with multiple turntables 'prepared' with his 'To and Fro-nograph,' one of the earliest Sonic Youth concert recordings, two tracks by Swans and a rarely performed large orchestral piece by Elliott Sharp. Even now, more than twenty years after these shows took place, these recordings capture an explosive energy that still feels vibrant and vital."

PHILIP GLASS - Glasscuts: Philip Glass Remixed (Orange Mountain 23; USA) "It has been said that Philip Glass is the 'Godfather of Trance' and evidence of that is found in the remixes that a number of young producers/musicians began sending to Orange Mountain Music as early as 2002. These unsolicited mixes became the genesis for Glasscuts - Philip Glass Remixed. This CD presents a very diverse program without any one dominant style. The artists are Androoval from Uruguay, Robert Bell from Australia, impLOG from the US, Woody McBride, DJ ESP from the US, Marcos Romero from Uruguay, Kate Simko from the US, Dietrich Schoenemann from the US, Luciano Supervielle from Uruguay and Dave Wesley from the US. We invite you to immerse yourself in Glasscuts - Philip Glass Remixed with open ears to experience a Glass that is reminiscent of the past, but with an adventurous contemporary twist."

BRUCE LEVINGTON - Portraits (Orange Mountain 25; USA) "Philip Glass's A Musical Portrait of Chuck Close is the product of many years of friendship between two important artists of our time. Pianist Bruce Levingston's performance of this new release serves as a tribute to the profound influences Philip Glass and Chuck Close have had upon one another's work. Since meeting in the 1960s in the SoHo Artists community of lofts and studios, Close has continually created portraits of Glass. The piece is a musical depiction of the spirit of Chuck Close and the integrity of his creative process. This recording also showcases musical portraits by three French masters, Ravel, Messiaen, and Satie, whose works influenced generations of composers and which are played with Mr. Levingston's understanding touch. One of this country's leading exponents of contemporary music, Bruce Levingston has premiered numerous works at prestigious venues throughout the world including Carnegie Hall and New York's Lincoln Center. Many of today's acclaimed composers have written works for him including Pulitzer Prize-winners William Bolcom, David Del Tredici, George Perle and Charles Wuorinen."

ERIK SATIE//FRANCIS POULENC - Francis Poulenc Plays the Piano Music of Satie and Poulenc (Cherry Red/El Records 078; UK) "Exquisite set of historic recordings from the early fifties of Erik Satie and Francis Poulenc piano music played superbly by Satie's friend Poulenc. This Poulenc Plays Satie and Poulenc album is one of the most sought after by Erik Satie followers and completists. The sensitivity of the performance rivals any. With the interpretations of Aldo Ciccolini it is regarded as the finest and the sound is pristine. Satie and Poulenc are amongst the most important European composers of the 20th century. The work of both belongs to today and Satie especially is quoted as an inspiration by international modern musicians in the fields of jazz and rock and experimental music such as Frank Zappa and Brian Eno. Eno in particular actively developed Satie's minimalism and ideas about furniture music toward the ambient music and 'muzak' of today. A lovely performance of Satie's best known composition 'Gymnopedie No 1' is included here along with other famous pieces such as 'Gnossienne No 3' and 'Descriptions Automatiques.' The Poulenc numbers are also a delight. His most popular piece 'Mouvements Perpetuels' which was used by Alfred Hitchcock in the film Rope is included in this programme along with 'Suite Francaise' that was a hit of its day and much admired by Stravinsky. Erik Satie's legacy is his position as a progressive composer and his cross pollination of musical forms and contexts that mixed the artistic high culture with the trivial. Since the sixties especially he has received worldwide appreciation and the recognition of his importance he so truly deserves."

ANTHONY BRAXTON/CHRIS DAHLGREN - ABCD (Not Two 768; Poland) Featuring Anthony Braxton on sopranino, soprano, Eb, F-alto, baritone & bass saxes & Bb clarinet and Chris Dahlgren on double bass, preparations & electronics. Both Mr. Braxton and Mr. Dahlgren contribute 4 pieces each, although what we really get is four versions of Braxton's "No. 316" and four versions of Dahlgren's "Penumbra for Woodwind(s) & Bass(es)". Mr. Braxton's latest compositional development, after his controversial "Ghost Trance" series, is called "Falling Rivers Musics" and it is included here as a part of all four versions of "No. 316". This disc was superbly recorded by Jon Rosenberg at Wesleyan University in CT., where Mr. Braxton has taught for the past decade. Closely miked and perfectly balanced so that we here each sound just right. Mr. Braxton shifts to another reed every few minutes as Mr. Dahlgren concentrates on mostly acoustic bass with occasional preparation: distortion and assorted electronics and/or manipulations. That bass sax has a sound so deep in its tone, it is both scary and hilarious simultaneously. There is a constant dialogue going on here, with both players matching wits and textures, tossing ideas back and forth and weaving some marvelous sounds together. Dahlgren's "Penumbra 4 + 2" version, has two reeds and two basses double tracked, giving the piece a slightly bent quartet vibe with some strange harmonies. on "No. 316 - Version b", Braxton concentrates on his own unique sound or distinctive vocabulary of reed sounds. He bends and twists notes in his own way, continuing to explore new textures, sometimes he began to do some forty years ago with discs like "For Alto", a pioneering double album of solo alto sax explorations. This duo continues to blur the lines between "new music" (or modern classical) and avant-jazz. For many of us, it no longer matters if it "swings", what does matter is if this music provides food for thought, a lifeline from the everyday bullshit that holds us all down. It does more than that, it provides us with hope, due to the many possibilities it uncovers along the way. - BLG

TRIO TARANA [RAVISH MOMIN/JASON KAO HWANG/SHANIR EZRA BLUMENKRANZ] - Five Nights (Not Two 770; EEC) This is the second superb disc from Trio Tarana and it features Ravish Momin on drums, percussion & compositions, Jason Kao Hwang on violin and Shanir Ezra Blumenkranz on oud & bass. This is a most distinctive downtown all-star trio that features three wonderful musicians who all keep busy in a wide variety of projects. Indian percussion wizard, Ravish Momin, works with the Sabir Mateen Quintet, Kalaparusha Trio and Ursel Schlicht's Ex Tempore, as well as having a couple of solo offerings on Sachimay. Veteran downtown violin master, Jason Kao Hwang, can be heard on a dozen discs in the past couple of years alone: Taylor Ho Bynum's Spider Monkey Strings, The Gift (w/ William Hooker & Roy Campbell), another trio with Francis Wong & Tatsu Aoki, with Dom Minasi, a double disc opera on New World and a recent CD on by his band Edge on 482-Music. Former Satlah and current Rashanim bassist supreme, Shanir Blumenkranz, is also one of the most in-demand of all new bassists, constantly juggling projects with John Zorn, Daniel Carter Trio, Pharoah's Daughter, Sonny Simmons, Braxton, Belogenis/Blumenkranz/Wollesen Trio, as well as his oud-led sextet which performs the music Masada's 'Book 2'. What an impressive resume!
'Five Nights' was recorded live at the Smithsonian Institution's Freer Gallery in July of 2005. The sly opening piece,"Dai Genyo", is for oud, violin and mostly hand percussion. It is a hypnotic blend of mysterious, Eastern strains, with Jason's sublime violin playing in an Indian-like tone and Shanir's wonderful oud caressing the melody with style and grace. Both Jason and Shanir take enchanting solos. The one non-original song is "Peace for Kabul" by Hakim Ludin. It has a most tantalizing groove, which played by the oud and percussion while Jason and then Shanir take more swell, middle-eastern sounding solos. Ravish plays traps and creates a great groove that combines different worlds, ethnic, jazz and even funky influences blended perfectly. Shanir, who just keeps getting better all the time, takes another extraordinary oud solo. I love the way Shanir's bass and Ravish's percussion lock in on "Gyarah" and dance around the beat together as Jason takes another superb violin solo. Both Shanir and Ravish have chosen perfect partners to blend the various strains and influences that make up their different backgrounds and it is astonishing how well all three players work together as one unique force. It doesn't get any better than this, so dig in. - BLG

JANDEK - Glasgow Sunday [DVD] (Corwood 0779; USA) DVD version. Filmed live at the Arches in Glasgow, Scotland on 10/17/04. NTSC format, theoretically Region 0. Aspect ration: 4:3. As a viewer you get to chose: "Camera 1", "Camera 2" or the "2 camera mix edit." Wow. This DVD features the complete set from Jandek's historic concert in Glasgow, his first-ever public performance. The group is a trio, with Richard Youngs on bass and Alex Nielson on drums. The "representative from Corwood" plays a black guitar, wears a black hat and sounds just right. The music is the same as the Glasgow Sunday CD, released one year earlier, but the visuals here are exceptional (in a basic "pro" fashion) and allow all sorts of new & vigorous insights into the Jandek portfolio. No bonus material, no Easter egg.

JOHN CALE - Paris 1919...plus (WEA/Rhino; UK) Digitally remastered and expanded edition of this 1973 solo album from the former Velvet Underground member. Features 11 bonus tracks (all previously unreleased): 'Burned Out Affair', 'Child's Christmas In Wales' (Alternate Mix), 'Hanky Panky Nohow' (Drone Mix), 'Endless Plain Of Fortune' (Alternate Version), 'Andalucia' (Rehearsal), 'Macbeth' (Rehearsal), 'Paris 1919' (String Mix), 'Grahame Greene' (Rehearsal), 'Half Past France' (Alternate Version), 'Antarctica Starts Here' (Rehearsal) and 'Paris 1919' (Piano Mix).
"One of John Cale's very finest solo efforts, Paris 1919 is also among his most accessible records, one which grows in depth and resonance with each successive listen. A consciously literary work -- the songs even bear titles like "Child's Christmas in Wales," "Macbeth" and "Graham Greene" -- Paris 1919 is close in spirit to a collection of short stories; the songs are richly poetic, enigmatic period pieces strongly evocative of their time and place. Chris Thomas' production is appropriately lush and sweeping, with many tracks set to orchestral accompaniment; indeed, there's little here to suggest either Cale's noisy, abrasive past or the chaos about to resurface in his subsequent work -- for better or worse, his music never achieved a similar beauty again." - Jason Ankeny, AMG

JUDEE SILL - Abracadabra - The Asylum Years: Judee Sill/Heart Food...plus [2 CD set] (WEA/Rhino; UK) (This edition contains all of the bonus cuts found on the two limited edition Rhino Handmade issues plus more!)
Judee Sill was a true original. A singer-songwriter with a wealth of influences and a fascination with religion, she referred to her work as "country-cult-baroque." Sill grew up in Oakland, California, and began playing piano at age three. A troubled family life and brushes with the law landed her in reform school, where, as church organist, she developed the gospel style that would characterize her future recordings. After a stint in college and three down-and-out years of addiction, she cleaned up and began work on her dream of becoming a songwriter. She spent a short time penning songs for The Turtles' production company before signing her own deal with Asylum. She was the first artist signed to David Geffen's Asylum label, and, along with Joni Mitchell and Carole King, exemplified the breezy "Laurel Canyon Sound" of the early '70s. Sill scored moderate hits with "Lady-O" (originally written for The Turtles) and "Jesus Was A Cross Maker" and released two albums -- 1971's Judee Sill and 1973's Heart Food -- before suffering chronic pain and eventually dying of a drug overdose at age 35.
Pleased with the creative direction of 'Judee Sill', the singer-songwriter again teamed with engineer/producer Henry Lewy (Joni Mitchell, Neil Young) for her follow-up. Rather than using an outside arranger for the strings (as she did on her previous album), Sill did all of the work herself. Her lack of formal training and the immense amount of orchestral overdubs certainly would have made such an outing a hardship for anyone. But the results are outstanding with echoes of Bach supporting the stellar early 70s Laurel Canyon singer/songwriter melodies. Sill's voice is stronger and Lewy's production more resonant. Built around the singer's guitar or piano, the songs are arranged with similar ambition. "There's A Rugged Road," a meditation on Christ's humanity, features country violins, pedal steel, multi-tracked vocals, and a hoofbeat rhythm. The gospel-influenced "Down Where The Valleys Are Low" burns with electric guitar, church organ, vibes, and doo-wop harmonies. The album's closing opus, "The Donor," uses male voices and tympani to build an intense medieval round.
This Rhino Handmade release of Heart Food has been remastered from original source materials and expanded with nine bonus tracks, including the studio outtake "The Desperado" and eight solo demo versions of album tracks. 'Heart Food' is available as an individually numbered limited edition of 5,000 copies

NEW VOLUME OF THE JIMI HENDRIX - 'IN THE STUDIO' SERIES
JIMI HENDRIX - In The Studio Volume 5 (Reclamation 1005; EEC) "The sessions featured on this volume of the Jimi Hendrix 'In The Studio' series are drawn from recordings made at the Record Plant in New York. It was here that Jimi would spend not merely hours but sometimes days just playing and finding out just what the recording studio offered and it could be said that Jimi regarded the studio as somewhat of a sound laboratory. It was here that a great many people would drop by to jam or maybe just hang out. The recordings contained on this disc cover the period between June 1968 when Jimi was recording material that would eventually be heard on the double album Electric Ladyland and April 1970 which was post Band Of Gypsys. Throughout the performances you can hear a musician who is relaxed and enjoying the creation of music for the sake of it although the cost of studio time was certainly one of the considerations for Jimi when he decided he wanted a studio of his own. It would have been Mike Jeffrey who pointed out the fiscal need for his own studio and also a place where he could record and play day and night of he so desired."

...AND BACK IN PRINT & AT A LOWER PRICE...
JIMI HENDRIX - In The Studio Volume 1 (Reclamation 1001; EEC) "The recordings featured on Volume 1 of the In The Studio Series cover the time period May 1967 through to early 1968. During this period Jimi had blazed a trail across Europe performing at many concerts where his brand of musicianship, allied to a strong sense of showmanship drew acclaim and respect in equally large amounts. The earliest recording featured here is 'She's So Fine,' Recorded 4th May 1967 at Olympic Studios 1967 with overdubs laid down on 30th October of that year. This is an alternate mix with different vocals by Noel Redding (who wrote the song). Other songs of note are 'Spanish Castle Magic,' 'Bold As Love,' and 'Have You Ever Been (To Electric Ladyland).' The sonic quality of some of these recordings is not all the compilers of this series would wish for but some of the recordings have been included for historical reasons with the thinking that it is better to hear these recordings than to leave them on the shelf to gather dust."

PRINCIPAL EDWARDS MAGIC THEATRE - Soundtrack (Cherry Red 306; UK) "There are whispers of Cherry Red Records releasing a luxurious Dandelion 45's (singles) Box Set with the participation of Clive & Shurley Selwood and many of the legendary label's artists... Whilst John Peel fans and music collectors alike wait with anticipation to see if the rumours are true, Cherry Red releases two albums from the Dandelion catalogue to whet the appetite, both from the curiously spectacular, Principal Edwards Magic Theatre. The multi-media PEMT cut a compellingly original swathe through a late-1960s music scene seemingly inhabited by wall-to-wall blues bands. Their first ever gig was witnessed by benefactor and producer John Peel. The legendary DJ promptly signed them to his Dandelion label. 'I guess he liked what he heard,' says guitarist and chief songwriter Root Cartwright. A stand-alone single released before the first album, 'Ballad (Of The Big Girl Now And A Mere Boy)'/ 'Lament For The Earth,' is included in this package as a bonus track. Soundtrack hit the record racks in August 1969, the third Dandelion long-player to be released in short order following debut efforts from folksingers Bridget St. John and Beau."

PRINCIPAL EDWARDS MAGIC THEATRE - The Asmoto Running Band (Cherry Red 307; UK) "The story so far: multi-media band Principal Edwards Magic Theatre, formed by a group of students at Exeter University, had signed to Radio 1 DJ John Peel's record label and released a first album, Soundtrack, in August 1969. Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason was brought in to produce a second album, released in January 1971. For his part, Mason is happy to recall those hazy days as best he could for this reissue. 'My memory of the recording was that I really enjoyed it. I must have done to some extent because I did two of them!' The eleventh LP release from John Peel's legendary Dandelion label lovingly repackaged here by Cherry Red Records."

TWO GREAT ALBUMS BOTH WITH GREAT GUEST BLOWS BY ROBERT FRIPP - AVAILBLE ON CD...
...FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 10 YEARS...
CHEIKHA RIMITTI [EL GHIZANIA] With ROBERT FRIPP/FLEA/GEZA X/EAST BAY RAY et al - Sidi Mansour (Because; France) [2006 reissue] In Spring 1993, Algerian composer Houari Talbi asked Cheikha ("Crazy") Rimitti to interpret some songs he had composed especially for her. The Mother Of Rai - a legendary progenitor of Rai music and it predecessor Wahrani, and a recording artist since the mid-30's - was thrilled by the project itself, and by the possibilty to show herself and current Rai singers in a different light. With this new recording adventure, Rimitti [Cheikha Rimitti El Ghizania] proved that conquest of new musical horizons is not a question of age, but of fresh inspiration.
Co-produced in Paris and Los Angeles by Houari Talbi [saxophones and keyboards], JBV [computers and treatments], and Geza X [rhythm guitar] with an all-star West meets Algeria lineup including Robert Fripp [lead guitar and Frippertronics], Flea [bass], East Bay Ray [guitar], Bruce Fowler [trombone], Walter Fowler [trumpet and flugelhorn], Hamid Ahssani [darbouka], Aziz [bendir, tahreja, karkabou, and gallal], Abdelillah Benzin [bendir, tahreja], Joseph Berardi and David Kendrick [drums], Bill Rhea [violins], Dan Forneo [pocket trumpet], Meki [gasba], and Sonia [tambourines]. 8 tracks, 65 minutes
"The original queen of Algerian rai music, born in 1923, is also one of the great survivors in all of Afropop. By the 1930s, the Berber, Bedouin and Andalusian elements that would ultimately lead to rai music had coalesced in a style called wahrani. Wahrani was championed by cheikhas--female singers--in the bars of Algeria's "Little Paris," the coastal city of Oran. Cheikhas voiced the complaints of working class people in French colonial Algeria, upsetting officials. They also sang openly about sex, upsetting conservative mujahedin rebels.
Just the same, with her husky voice and inviting sexuality, seduced a mass following beginning with her 1936 debut recording. When revolution stirred in the '50s, Rimitti and others, then known as shaabi musicians, backed the cause. Trumpeter Bellemou Messaoud made a career of accompanying the first pop rai singers in the early '60s, around the time of independence. Schooled in Spanish music, Bellemou replaced wahrani's qasbah flute with trumpet or sax, and customized a quarter-tone accordion. Working with singer Belkacem Bouteldja, he stole the spotlight from a furious Rimitti. Soon however, the new government interfered, banning concerts and liquor sales in 1967, and limiting rai music to private weddings and the commercial cassette market. In this climate, the late producer Rachid Baba Ahmed, a fan of rock, soul, and funk, set up a basic eight-track studio and became pop rai's number one hitmaker, producing blockbuster releases that launched legendary rai careers for artists like Khaled, Zahouania and Fadela. Today, though over 75 years old, Rimitti continues to record."
"Modern Rai music, organically keeping in tradition, without the cheap grafting of passing fashions of Electronica, Trip-hop et al. Absolutely Amazing Record! And as for my predilection as a Fripp nut, with over 300 recordings, this and its companion CD of outtakes [called 'Cheikha', unfortunately not in print] would be in the first handfuls I'd grab in an evacuation emergency [right after the Crimso and Fripp solo albums] - so there! I CANNOT RECOMMEND THIS HIGHLY ENOUGH - GOOGLEPLEX THUMBS UP!!! - MannyLunch

COLIN SCOT With ROBERT FRIPP/JON ANDERSON/PETER HAMMILL/PETER GABRIEL/PHIL COLLINS et al - Colin Scot (Eclectic/SPV; Germany) Originally released by United Artists in 1971, this is the first time Colin Scot has seen CD release. The Eclectic definitive re-issue is re-mastered from the original recording tapes and includes four previously unreleased bonus tracks. On this forgotten gem, Colin Scot was joined by an unbelievable array of talented friends, including Robert Fripp, Peter Gabriel, Rick Wakeman, Peter Hammill, Jon Anderson, Brinsley Schwarz, Phil Collins and Davey Johnstone, amongst others, including ALL of Van Der Graaf Generator. Some on the UK folk scene felt that the presence of such musical heavyweights on the album clouded the essential beauty and simplicity of the songs but others disagreed, marvelling at the sheer weight of talent lining up to help out, with financial reward low on their list of priorities. As Rick Wakeman says, "He was a great songwriter and allowed the musicians freedom to add colour to his work, something I know all of us who had the pleasure of working with him enjoyed."

TWO OUT-OF-PRINT BEN MONDER ALBUMS - HIS 2ND AND 3RD - AVAILABLE AGAIN ON CD!!
BEN MONDER With THEO BLECKMANN/SKULI SVERRISSON/JIM BLACK - Excavation (Sunnyside 1157; USA) [originally released on the now-defunct Arabesque label] Ben is a chordal and textural master, mining the advanced harmonic concepts heard in the chordal work of Bill Frisell, Mick Goodrick, Steve Khan, and Wayne Krantz, as well as lesser-known but no less masterful Bostonians Bret Wilmott and Randy Roos. He's obviously studied and absorbed the quartal harmonic concept of McCoy Tyner, upper structure triads, and all manner of harmonic extensions, substitution and drop voicings. A hobbyist guitarist sitting in the audience would be hard-pressed to find any of Monder's voicings in a standard chord almanac. Suffice to say that Ben is easily capable, when employing minimal effects, to turn four notes over a bass note into a pure wall of sound. In Ben's hands, a simple melody voiced on the top note (as he does on the closer You Are My Sunshine) can be entertainingly turned on a dime from dulcet to eerily, yet beautifully dissonant, depending on what he instantaneoulsy chooses to voice underneath it. In the course of a tune, four chords in a four bar progression will be replaced by sixteen, creating a harmonic primer only to be stripped bare by tune's end. All that being said, his single note soloing concepts and execution are as equally formidable as his Einsteinian chordal work.

Mandarin Movie's debut release is a full frequency audio assault, dense and beautiful at times, unrestrained, chaotic & hard at other times, with an almost sculptural quality, always preparing us for the beauty of sound and silence. The name 'Mandarin Movie' stems from a dream Rob had in 2003, evoking an artist's vision of singular clarity similar to Sun Ra's Space is The Place. At the dreams end Rob found himself atop the highest building in the world where 'It was all light beams and flying discs and dense beautiful sounding explosions which put a good feeling in the back of your head'." JOSEPH JARMAN/GLENN HORIUCHI/FRANCIS WONG - Pachinko Dream Track 10 (Music & Arts 1040; USA) w/ Glenn Horiuchi on piano & shimsen, Francis Wong on tenor, flute & erhu and Elliot Humberto Kavee on percussion, recorded live at the Annual Asian-American Jazz Festival in San Francisco. Both Glenn and Francis claimed to have been influenced immensely by the AACM & the Art Ensemble, both of which Joseph had once been a part of. Joseph had quit music for three years beginning in 1993 and had become a Buddhist, this concert was recorded just months after his return to music making with a completely new attitude towards playing. This release consists of four long pieces that all unfold slowly. All flows in a natural way, like fish swimming in a clean, clear river. Both reed players have a purity of tone, a relaxed quality often shines through. Elliot's frenzied section for gongs, never pushes things too far, keeping the balance from erupting too far. On the title track, we get a hilarious spoken vocal by Jarman about the winning of a pachinko (gambling) game in which the audience members are called down to pick up their prizes. The music finally soars as the horns, piano and percussion swirl like spirits being set free. - BLG

"A most impressive first effort for this quintet. Kevin Norton is one of our finest percussionists and composers, continually popping up in demanding situations, from Fred Frith's Keep the Dog to various recent Anthony Braxton projects. He has a fine trio cd on CIMP with Curlew's George Cartwright, but this his second date as a leader is superb for all of it's 72 minute journey. His ensemble features David Bindman (smoking trio cd w/ drummer Ehran Elisha on CIMP) and Bob DeBellis (various Phillip Johnston releases) on saxes & clarinets, Tomas Ulrich (Walter Thompson Big Band) on cello and the ever-solid & propulsive Joe Fonda (also various Braxton units) on acoustic bass. Kevin has done an outstanding job of arranging all and composing all but two of these pieces. The two non-originals are both Monk tunes-refreshingly different takes on "Epistrophy" and "Brilliant Corners"! This quintet often remind me of Eric Dolphy's 'Out to Lunch" unit masterwork-with Tony Williams & Richard Davis-like finesse. Both Kevin & Joe Fonda constantly spin tight webs around the robust harmonies of tenor & alto sax, clarinet & bass clarinet and cello. This music moves from suspenseful to quick-witted, somewhere between modern acoustic jazz and contemporary classical streams. One of the delights of this release is "Three Movements for Solo and Ensemble" which features guest clarinet hero-Dave Krakauer. As always, Krakauer wails throughout magnificently while both saxes play as one force due to Norton's fine composing. Excellent, well conceived & challenging!" - BLG
