ART BEARS -The Art Box [6 CD box set] (ReR ABOX) 'The Art Box' marks the 25th anniversary of one of the most eclectic, dynamic and productive creative alliances in the history of progressive/experimental music. Featuring the legendary guitarist & composer Fred Frith, groundbreaking percussionist/lyricist/composer Chris Cutler and vocalist extraordinaire Dagmar Krause, this assembly of genius has an "incalculable" contribution to the post-context art-rock scene. This lavishly packaged 6 cd set contains the three original releases, properly re-mastered plus 'Art Bears Revisited' - A double cd of re-mixes, re-workings and (mostly) new pieces made from the Art Bears multi-track masters by The Residents, John Oswald, Fred Frith, Christian Marclay, Jon Rose, Bob Drake (and many others). Six years in the making, this is an amazing catalogue of imagination and brilliant, demanding music. Digi-packed with a cover art by EM Thomas, who did all three original Art Bears covers as well as comprehensive information. This double also contains "Collapse" from the Ralph Records single, "All Hail" from the 'Recommended Sampler' and one previously unreleased track completed by Fred Frith and Chris Cutler for this release. A free extra CD only available with the box (there are reasons) containing further re-workings by John Oswald, Bob Drake, Fred Frith, Biota, Yasushi Utsunomiya, as well as live Art Bears tracks and a Duck and Cover cover. A thick book of artwork, articles, notes, interviews and commentary on the material, the work process, the tour and the band in general, with photographs, documents and artwork. For us prog-heads here at DMG, as well as many of our enlightened friends and customers around the world, the Art Bears, who evolved out of Henry Cow, remain the most seminal of all progressive outfits. Amen.

CHRIS McGREGOR'S BROTHERHOOD OF BREATH - Bremen To Bridgwater [2 cd SET] (Cuneiform 182/183) Praise the Lord for yet another treasure from Chris McGregor and his incredible all-star South African/British cast of divine characters! Featuring (hold your breath) Mongezi Feza & Harry Beckett on trumpets; Dudu Pukwana, Elton Dean, Evan Parker, Mike Osborne, Gary Windo, Alan Skidmore & Bruce Grant on saxes; Nick Evans & Radu Malfatti on trombones; Chris McGregor on piano, Harry Miller on bass and Louis Moholo & Keith Bailey on drums. The wonderful South African pianist and composer Chris McGregor led racially mixed Blue Notes in South Africa in the early 1960's. Touring and performing proved difficult and tiring due to the continuous government harassment, in 1964 McGregor and the band's core members left their South African homeland. They settled in London in 1966 where they befriended many in the city's emerging avant-garde jazz community and made a huge impact on London's jazz scene. Chris founded the big-band Brotherhood of Breath in 1970, who were essentially The Blue Notes augmented by musicians of the English avant-garde jazz community. Combining the rhythms of African music with those of American big-band jazz and the free playing of British improv, it produced "one of the most vital and life-affirming big-band jazz ever played by anyone, anywhere." (BBC). The Brotherhood released only a handful of recordings in their lifetime, with one studio & one live disc available on cd, until Cuneiform released 'Travelling Somewhere' in 2001, a 1973 radio broadcast, in 2001, which gained rave reviews. This release, 'Bremen to Bridgewater', contains two cd's of previously unreleased live recordings made in Germany and England during two very different periods of the band's career. The German radio recordings were made on June 20th, 1971 at Lila Uele, a well known jazz club in Bremen. The English recordings were made at the Bridgewater Arts Center, during two tours that the band made with different lineups in February and November of 1975 and feature some of the very last recordings of trumpeter Mongezi Feza, who died tragically in December of that year. In addition to the stunning music, this double disc features a 12 page booklet with rare and beautiful photos and detailed liner notes by Francesco Martinelli. Sadly, the only original Blue Notes member who is still alive is wonder drummer Louis Moholo and thanks to the fine folks at Cuneiform the BoB's righteously inspired music lives on!! Special note, Maxine McGregor, Chris' widow and author of that fine but difficult to purchase book on Chris & the Brotherhood, called Steve from Cuneiform on Christmas to thank him for the great effort he has made in getting this treasure released. All three previous Brotherhood of Breath compact discs remain in stock.
Two CD set for $18 (in stock next week)Ê

THE CLAUDIA QUINTET - I, Claudia (Cuneiform) This is the second superb release by this sensational 'jazz and beyond' ensemble, led by percussionist and Meredith Monk collaborator John Hollenbeck which features an all-star downtown cast with Chris Speed (from Pachora) on clarinet & tenor sax, Ted Reichman on accordion, Drew Gress on double bass and Matt Moran on vibraphone. Their music, while clearly influenced by the jazz idiom, goes far beyond jazz and many parts of this record have more in common with progressive musicians such as L 'Ensemble Raye, Hamster Theatre, Nimal and Von Zamla. "This album demonstrates that innovative jazz does not have to be harsh, angry, loud, shrill or grating; it can be delicate, witty, ethereal and radiantly lyric" - Chicago Tribune. Formed by composer/drummer John Hollenbeck in 1997, this NY ensemble creates music that explores the edge in a manner that captivates and enthralls novice listeners and keeps experienced fans returning for more. Claudia's' newest release, 'I, Claudia' is a highly seductive work, ripe with compelling, propulsive grooves, dynamic sensitivity, catchy melodies and telepathic improvisation. Remarkably accessible, its music can perhaps be called post-jazz or possibly third stream. In addition to Hollenbeck, the band features four other versatile and acclaimed players drawn from the huge pool of talent in New York, each one a leader and resourceful musician in their own right.
CD release for $13.Ê

RICHARD PINHAS -Tranzition (Cuneiform) Composer, guitarist and electronics innovator Richard Pinhas is recognized as one of France's major experimental musicians. A pivotal figure in the international development of electronic rock music, Pinhas' stature in France is analogous to Tangerine Dream's in Germany: the father figure of an entire musical movement. The pioneering, aggressive music produced by his band Heldon during the 1970s, fusing electronics, guitar and rock, heralded the industrial and techno to come and remains today vital and unsurpassed. On 'Tranzition', Pinhas weaves beautiful, spacey, processed (Frippian) guitar tapestries, with added color from laptop, violin and the drumming of Antoine Paganotti of Magma. The voice of the late author Philip K. Dick can be heard on "Moumoune girl", from a 1977 tape that he gave Pinhas. The BBC described his recent guitar music as "music that is in flux and stasis at the same time, with an almost sculptural presence, stuffed with overtones and rich textures." 'Tranzition' is a multifaceted and richly jeweled work in which cause and effect, acoustics and electronics, taped sound and live playing change roles and even realities. "Among collectors of electronic music, some names have become legendary and are present in every search list. These names include Richard Pinhas, the leader of the French cult group Heldon." - Audion.
CD release for $13

THE HOMOSEXUALS - The Homosexuals Record (ReR) One of the most enigmatic bands of the British art-punk scene, The Homosexuals carved a subterranean legend that far exceeded their discography of self released 45's and the posthumous release of "The Homosexuals Record" as a Recommended Records album in 1984. Noted rock critic Richard Mason listed "Walk before Imitate" as one of his top ten punk songs of all time (#3). Underground chronicler Johan Kugelberg sang the bands praises with his canonically authoritative top one hundred D.I.Y. punk singles of all time article in Ugly Things #16, giving their singles four of the top twenty slots. Now, for the first time, UK experimental label ReR Megacorp in conjunction with Morphius Archives are happy to present the entire Homosexuals discography on one CD, including an audiophile restoration of the original 1984 ReR release 'The Homosexuals Record' plus 5 extra tracks. Detailed liner notes from three members of the band as well as UK and U.S. journalists chronicle their brief but brilliant artistic accomplishments, creating what is the most comprehensive, thoughtful, and artistically whole document of The Homosexuals seminal sound and style. Absolutely essential!
CD only reissue release for $14

AHVAK - Ahvak (Cuneiform 185) Ahvak are a most impressive new band from Israel and are named after the Hebrew word for "dust". They create powerful music of dark, ominous and compelling beauty. Ahvak's mesmerizing and electrified version of chamber rock blurs the boundary lines between styles and aligns the band with forward-thinking bands such as Univers Zero, The Science Group, Sotos and Thinking Plague. Led by two conservatory trained composers/keyboardists and also featuring excellent work on guitar, bass and drums (by Dave Kerman from Thinking Plague & 5UU's), the five musicians are joined by their engineer, Udi Koomran, who often extends the music into unique directions by his use of modern computer software without compromising the integrity of the compositions or the vibrant performances. The resulting CD is a highly sophisticated and expertly produced work, featuring superb compositions performed by highly experienced musicians. One listen to this and you'll know why this is on Cuneiform!Ê
CD release for $13.

GUAPO - Five Suns (Cuneiform 184) This is a most dramatic and dynamic release that will certainly will impress a large number of Crimson-heads and Magma fans, and, unlike the endless watered down bands that receive this 'Crimso' kudo, these guys actually deserve it! Guapo is a British trio that plays an intense music that straddles the boundaries of progressive, noise, minimalism and avant-rock. Their sound has been compared to such artists as Magma, Boredoms, King Crimson, Univers Zero, This Heat, Ruins, Sun Ra and Terry Riley. 'Five Suns' is the band's fifth album (first on Cuneiform) and it is Guapo's most apocalyptic and dynamically accomplished work to date, bringing a new sense of sonic and spatial awareness to the band's trademark sensibilities of complex song structures, harmonic atonality and percussive mantras. Guapo make use of vintage equipment such as Fender Rhodes, mellotron, Moog and gongs to create a color-saturated patchwork of epic, primordial beauty. The new instrumentation has allowed their sound into more ambitious vistas, where progressive influences are turned on their head by both the infusion of hardcore rock energy and the use of hypnotic, trance-like repetition. Over the course of the 46 minute title track, as well as the two additional pieces on the album, the manic jazz-inflected drumming, brooding zeuhl bass and pointillist keyboards maintain a relentless driving momentum while deftly negotiating a carefully controlled ebb and flow. "...sipping from the same dark chalice that intoxicated Lark's Tongues era King Crimson..."- The Wire. "Four Fumbs Up!" -Mannylunch
CD release for $13.

BILL LASWELL - AfterMathematics (Sub Rosa 216) Featuring Grandmaster DXT, Skiz (a/k/a Spectre from Word Sound) and Sly Dunbar. This new opus from Bill Laswell for Sub Rosa is exploring the veins of hip-hop and dub in some peculiar manner. Going urban with some old-school hip-hop ingredients, then dubbing and scratching, Laswell is paying tribute to the past of those musical styles and adapting the vibes to the present and future. Bass and kicks, straight and efficient, are the skeleton; turntablism, floating keyboards chords, abstract sounds are giving flesh' n 'blood to this organic machine. 'AfterMathematics' is at the same times urban and tribal, like being in an hidden cavern in the heart of NY, doing some shamanic rituals in a crowded big avenue in order to transform it in a gigantic dancefloor. 10 tracks to fly high, or get the echo, the resonance of a big city's pulse, and yet facing some ghosts from the past, like travelling in a time machine. Anything is possible going back to the prehistoric age or seeing the future. Enter the ritual.
Belgian import CD for $15.

SONNY SIMMONS TRIO - Triangular Force/Live in Montreal 1994 (Parallactic 58/DMG/ARC) Featuring the legendary Sonny Simmons on alto sax, Charnett Moffett on bass and Art Lewis on drums. Spectacular and well recorded live set featuring material from Sonny's major label debut 'American Jungle' plus strong renditions of two standards, "My Favorite Things" and "Body & Soul". The trio sound particularly spirited throughout and Charnett is a complete MF on that blistering acoustic bass of his, pulling off a couple of totally astonishing solos. Art Lewis is also splendid, spinning his rhythmic web with passion and fire. I can only recall his name from a few records in the seventies (with Lee Konitz), jeez how come we don't hear from him more often!?! Sonny sounds like he is playing soprano sax on the Trane classic, "My Favorite Things" as he sails and soars intensely taking us all along with him on a magic carpet ride into the heavens. Nearly fifty minutes of powerful spirit music from this colossal almighty trio!
Nicely designed CD only release in a see-through DVD-like package.
CD for $15

FRODE GJERSTAD TRIO - Ultima (Cadence Jazz 1108) Featuring Frode on alto sax, William Parker on bass and Hamid Drake on drums. This was recorded live at the Ultima Jazz Fest in Oslo, Norway in October of 1997 and released two years later. Downtown contrabass hero and multi-bandleader, William Parker, recently cleaned out his closet and left us with a box of cds to check out. One of these gems is this wonderful free-jazz trio date with the great Scandinavian alto saxist Frode Gjerstad and Williams' most consistently inspired and diverse rhythm team partners, our man Hamid Drake (last seen locally at Tonic with Painkiller). Frode has more than a dozen fine releases under his belt, having worked at length in Detail with John Stevens and Johnny Dyani, as well as with Peter Brotzmann, Derek Bailey and Bobby Bradford. This trio with William and Hamid is burning and spinning furiously right from the starting gate, rarely coming up for air. "Ultima" is one long (nearly an hour) and evolving piece that moves through a variety of sections. William, early on, takes one of his customary, amazing and intense bowed bass solos while Hamid whips up a rhythm storm along side as Frode digs in and takes off for the stratosphere. Frode occasionally sound like Jemeel Moondoc, which is no surprise since Jemeel has also used the same rhythm team at times. There is a Frode Gjerstad ten cd set of duos planned for FMR in the near future, but I wouldn't hold my breath. In the meantime, this particular trio date is an outstanding one to savor and heat things up on these cold winter nights.

AYUO/OHTA HIROMI - Red Moon (Tzadik 7245) This unexpected delight features the lovely voice of Hiroma with the enigmatic composer Ayuo who utilizes layers of acoustic & electric guitars, electric sitar, bass, celtic harp, bouzouki, ukulele, loops, synth and organ. The opening piece, "Moon and Water" sounds like a precious folk/psych gem from the early seventies (Popol Vuh perhaps?) with exquisite acoustic guitar, angelic vocal and haunting violin, sitar and even some tabla. Ayuo plays some 70's style Hammond organ and wah-wah guitar on "Dreaming Way", another enchanting treat. These are a couple pieces for delicate bouzouki, celtic harp and touching vocals, as well as a great dance/trance piece with some hypnotic drum n' bass grooves. Ayuo is inspired by a wealth of different religions and philosophies from Buddhism to Greek to Sufi to Chinese to Scottish texts or ideas, each piece explores a different theme. This often captures some of the better psych/prog vibes and sounds of those heady seventies bands that we are often searching for in bags full of obscure reissues. Surprising that this should come out now, be grateful.

GLENN BRANCA - Symphony Numbers 8 & 10 Live at The Kitchen [NTSC DVD] (Atavistic) This is a great thing to have. Although 1995 is a little late in the game for Branca's work, anyone who has had the great pleasure of seeing his ensemble live and loud will appreciate the fact that this exists! The Branca Ensemble, captured at their biggest and most brutal performing his powerful elegies live in 1995, at NYC's then institution-of-the-moment, The Kitchen. A gorgeous three camera live shoot, with excellent HEAVY sound courtesy Sir Wharton Tiers and a handsome package. Features include liner notes by Tim Holmes, a photo gallery and Branca catalog. About 70 minutes of immensely devastating sounds!
DVD only release for $20.

ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE - Univers Zen ou de Zero A Zero [4LP set] (Fractal 020412) Vinyl version of the classic slab of heavy psych weirdness. Includes the complete session for 'Univers Zen ou de Zero a Zero', a triple album studio, with unreleased tracks plus one rare bonus disc: 'Live In Europe 2002' with a full color insert. Over 160 minutes of mind-blowing grooviness!

TOM WALSH / NOMA - Diversion (Ambiances Magnetiques 119) Featuring the great Montreal-based trombonist Tom Walsh with two different quartets at two live sets in Montreal and Toronto from 2002. The Cote Cour quartet features Guy Kaye on electric guitar, Alan Baculis on el. bass and Francois Chauvette on drums, while the Cote Jardin unit features Rainer Wiens on el. guitar, Norman Guilbeault on contrabass and Pierre Tanguay on drums, with Walsh on trombone and sampler. While I am unfamiliar with all members of the first quartet, the Jardin unit includes both Norman and Pierre, whom I've caught up at the Victo fest on more than one occasion. The Cour Qt. features some fine intricate and haunting playing with Guy's ghost-like spidery guitar, the rhythm moving together in waves, ebbing to and fro. There are some eerie samples floating through the mix and at times it difficult to tell who is doing what since it could me some modified guitar or trombone. This is a well balanced blend of progressive and jazz/rock tendencies, hard to predict which direction will surface next. Each player is utilized to their fullest as many of these pieces shift between a variety of complex schemes. It will probably take a while to enjoy all of this, since there is so many unexpected twists and turns. Most impressive.

GREAT RESTOCKS AND REISSUES!!!

BERNARD PARMEGIANI - Violostries [2 CD set] (InaGram 1012/13) Finally reissued, with new artwork; this has been the most in-demand electro-acoustic CD for the past few years. Parmegiani is one the electro-acoustic superstars of the INAGRAM universe and along with various Bayle titles this is a great place to start with the label. This amazing double disc is broken up into two parts: the first disc consists of old-style tape-splicing electroacoustic material, dating from 1963 to 1976 ("Violostries," "Pour en Finir avec le Pourvoir d'Orphee" & "Dedans-Dehors"). The second disc represents post-computer acousmatic music, with works from 1986 to 1991 ("Rouge-Mort:" "Thanatos," "Exercisme 3" & "Le Present Compose"). All are thoroughly soaked with the intuitive power of brain-scanning sonic properties, tones fade and explode with stunning neuronic intensity. "Exercisme 3" features "a sort of interface enabling natural sounds or analogical synthetic sounds to release digitally synthesized sounds. Such and such a series of impulsions releases virtually aleatoric, and sometimes very varied, repetitions of digital sounds. These repetitions are often very 'dense' and take us to the limits of continual sound phenomena, thus making these 'factory sounds' lose their instrumental "soul." Thus, we suddenly swing from one domain to another, from the instrumental to the electro-acoustic, from a language we understand, to an 'unknown language.

PIERRE HENRY - Labyrinthe: "Exp}dition sonore en 10 s}quences" (InaGram 2022) Pierre Henry celebrated his 75th birthday with 'Labyrinthe', which was premiered in a GRM concert at Radio France, under the direction of Olivier Messiaen on March 29th 2003. For the very first time, Pierre Henry has used sound material which was not his own. The current GRM composers offered, as greetings on the occasion of his birthday, the ground material for this piece.

AMON D L II - Plays Phallus Dei [DVD] (Repertoire 3017) Now available in the more standard DVD-styled Super CD package [previous version in regular CD digipak is still available -- REP 3016DVD -- you have to order by the correct catalog number to get the packaging you want]. First ever commercial release of this legendary Amon DuuI II movie. DVD/digipak, Aspect Ratio 4:3; Original Mono + Dolby Digital 5.1; US-compatable NTSC, region-free. "This is a cinematic retrospective, focusing on the early experimental days of Amon Dxxl II. The original film, shot in the Summer of 1968 at a Munich studio, features the German rock group with their legendary line-up. A few months before signing their first recording contract, the group was filmed performing the title track from their 1969 debut album. The movie was launched at the Edinburgh Film Festival. 'The film could be entitled 'The Creation Of Sound',' remarked the program notes. A respected national daily newspaper enthused: "a German rock music movie -- Rxdiger Nxchtern's one of the Munich rock group Amon Dxxl -- turned out to be the most successful entry and the only one to earn spontaneous applause and requests for a repeat performance, in addition to earning the curious accolade: "It's rough, it's vicious, it's drama".
DVD release for $22.

DUDU PUKWANA - Ubagile (DA Music/Freedom Series) Important reissue of South African alto sax giant Dudu Pukwana's scarse second album, a/k/a 'Diamond Express'. On one track he's joined by Elton Dean (alto sax & saxello), Nick Evans (trombone) and the phenomenal Keith Tippett on piano. Available on rare occasion only.
